Nature & Parks
Large botanical garden with a unique collection of big tropical trees & palms, plus a lily pond.
Billabong Sanctuary, spanning across 11 hectares, is a fantastic wildlife refuge that showcases the beauty of native Australian animals such as kangaroos, koalas and parrots. The sanctuary offers a range of different environments where visitors can experience these amazing creatures up close. Alongside this are ranger presentations that provide interesting insights into the lives of these animals.
We enjoyed a lovely day at Billabong Sanctuary today. The park was very well presented with lots of native animals to experience in different environments. The ranger presentations by Ray were well delivered and interesting.
All in all recommended as a great place to explore while in Townsville.

Worth a visit. Family friendly enterprise but not as slick as more commercially orientated ventures.
Large car park (free). Level walk most areas so suitable for pram/buggy users
Staff friendly and knowledgeable.
Coffee shop/cafe serves snacks and drinks..a picnic area in the open or under shade with plenty of tables and seating.
Plenty of animals and birds to see.
Gift shop selling usual range of items, pens, fridge magnets, tee shirts etc.
Interactive feeding of kangaroos and turtles. Crocodile feeding is at set time for people to watch.
Various 'meet and greet' sessions during day for dingoes, wombats, koalas, various reptiles and birds. Check signage for times.
See the Cassowary bird....an endangered species....resembles something out of Jurassic World. 🙂

we loved our experience here. the sanctuary is well maintained and the ticket is affordable. very much enjoyed the kangaroo feeding experience. you could buy their bag of food for $3.

A wonderful day out. It would be great to see paths upgraded a touch as certain spots were a tad hard to navigate with a wheelchair BUT still manageable.
The shows were informative and entertaining. Enclosures well kept, as was the whole park.

This is a great place for a family. Has a pool nice food and lots of animals to see. You can hold a koala ,snake and a wombat and some others too. Great experience

Had a great time. Loved all the animals especially the croc feeding and patting the gorgeous dingo.
All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Amenities clean. Scones delicious.
They have fantastic picnic areas including BBQ and a pool.
Would highly recommend.

Everytime we have visited the Billabong we've had such a great time! It's easily accessible making it inclusive of everyone young or old. There's plenty of animal interactions during the day, with the awesome knowledgeable staff presenting excellent shows you can tell they are passionate about their animals. $140 for a family day pass (2A/3K), with no extra to hold various different animals. Always a good time at the Billabong highly recommend a day here!
Dani C — Google review
My family and I had an amazing experience at Billabong Sanctuary! The interaction with all animals was truly unforgettable. The rangers were incredibly attentive and friendly, and their explanations about each animal were informative and engaging. I couldn't have asked for a better visit. Highly recommend this sanctuary to anyone looking for a unique animal encounter 😊
Mariana Vidigal — Google review
I simply don’t go here enough. Super clean for the animals and a lovely place to relax, swim, eat at the cafe or bring a picnic or bbq. Rangers very informative and friendly with heaps of opportunities for animal interaction. Extremely lucky to have this place on our doorstep.

Awesome place to view Wildlife. Friendly staff that were helpful with navigation. Alot of turtles that follow you around and will eat out of your hand.
Jake Mullane — Google review
Had the most wonderful day here with my partner learning about the animals and interacting with many of them too!! The animals are all really well looked after and all look to be really happy and healthy. It’s a great sanctuary where keepers really understand the animals and know how to look after them whilst allowing visitors with special experiences.
I’d suggest getting there at 9am as the timetable for experiences with animals begins then !:)
Food is fairly priced and there’s lots of seating outside for you to eat hot food , picnics etc.
There’s even a pool for the children to use which is a great idea as it was really hot when I visited!!
Will 100% recommend - especially for couples or families.

Absolutely loved the bird show, was the best, my favourite part of the whole day. Also saw some other beautiful wildlife, a gorgeous tree kangaroo and a dingo, emus, koalas and the biggest captive crocodile in Queensland and beautiful black Cockatoos which are my absolute favourite birds. I couldn’t be happier about it, was a nice place to visit while in Townsville. Great experience :)
Jasper Stewart — Google review
Not really that much of creatures, but a fun experience there. People can get very close to Kangaroos and koalas. There are many shows in a day starting from opening time.

Love coming here, so peaceful ,kids always enjoy interacting with the animals. The kangaroos are so laid back, we love feeding them
The rangers are awesome, friendly and can answer any question.
Had my son's bday here over the weekend, great facilities. We used the pool/bbq area.
Entrance is quite expensive, you're better off getting the annual pass and come as many times as you want.

Had a great day out at Billabong Sanctuary with the family. They had staff walking around with different animals that you could hold and pat. Had lunch while we were out there. The Billabong Beef Burger and chips was the best burger l have had in Townsville for a long time. Definitely need to buy a bag or 2 of seed to feed the animals.

Overall, it's a decent location. Able to have interaction with a variety of native animals. The best for me was the Tree Kangaroo, very active, you wouldn't know he had no vision. I guess coming from Victoria, I noted the lack of grassed areas, otherwise it offers plenty for visitors.
IGuideU — Google review
Great wildlife reserve, staff were all friendly and the animals all knew they were safe and loved - their attitude to strange humans was all positive
(Don't feed them without permission - some of these shots are birds being fed by their trainers)

Great morning out with the kiddos. You can take your own food and drinks, no alcohol though I think. Loads of whistling ducks, and turtles. Only saw 3/4 as the kids were exhausted. Kangaroos stayed well out of the way of people and the dingoes were on vacation I think, and no Meerkats. But still a great outing. Swimming pool is lovely, and the cafe has food and drinks. You can also buy food for the animals. Saw the croc feeding which was amazing.

The kids really enjoyed the visit and the walk around the Billabong sanctuary. The animal interaction was an amazing experience. The staff and Rangers were friendly and knowledgeable. Worth a visit if you have kids that live animals and a short walk.

Our family visited this sanctuary in 2001. Didn’t have online reviews back then! This would have to be the most authentic amazing wildlife experience in Australia. Loved how natural it was, walking through the bush and coming across animals in there natural habitat. 100% above The Australia Zoo! Amazing staff, low key but very professional. A must do when you are in this area!
Gina Schroder — Google review
It's amazing zoo,zoo itself it's not too big but you can interact with all different animals with no cost, you can hold snake and little 🐊for free and take pics with your phone and feed turtles free and get really close to wombat. Definitely worth the ticket price I feel this zoo it's more personally than any other zoo I love my meerket experience was amazing₍˄·͈༝·͈˄*₎◞ ̑̑ love it and also they have pool in the zoo its too hot
Only thing I wish there are more choice of food and more kangaroos

Fantastic place to spend the day as a family or with a group of friends. We go multiple times we year with the yearly pass. There is picnic and BBQ areas as well as a little cafe. We always end the trip with a swim in the pool. There are plenty of sessions throughout the day where they talk about the animals. With some of them being twice per day. There are opportunities to pet, hold, and have photos with some of the animals. The workers are very friendly and always willing to answer questions. Photos taken by my friend during our last trip

What a wonderful day out. We went with our big kids and grandsons. The staff are super friendly, the Rangers are so knowledgeable and keen to share that knowledge. We loved how interactive everything was. Cuddling a Koala is simply the most amazing thing I have ever done. We loved everything about this place. We were first time visitors but will be here more often in future. Will definitely join up to support such a wonderful place.
The Palmetum is a 17-hectare botanical garden that is home to a variety of rare and endangered palm tree species. It boasts excellent landscaping, with everything neatly grouped and labelled for visitors. The park offers a peaceful and tranquil environment, perfect for leisurely walks amidst the spectacular trees and cactus gardens. Visitors can also enjoy coffee at the garden's facilities before or after their walk.
This palm garden is beautiful and relaxing to walk through or sit and have a picnic. There are water lilies along the river edge of the Palmetum. There are some huge spiders in there and saw a python just having a snooze in the garden bed. Worth a visit, maybe not on a very hot day. The is a really nice Cafe at the entrance "Absolute Cravings", food is amazing and friendly service.

Great place! Saw small kangaroos and turtles, some Birds and pretty flowers etc. I think that they could water the plants and maintain the area a bit often tho. Otherwise nice place to visit. There is also a cafe next to the park (but i think it's open just until 2pm). The park has free entry.

Good parking and loved the garden setting. Bench seats I liked 👍 Seen the Black Hawk Memorial. My heart goes out to all.
Great park with a big kids playground .
The pungent smell of bat poop certainly clears the sinuses as it's a major flying fox 🦊 roosting place .
But hey their a part of North Queensland , they have a right to enjoy the park too .
Justin Hooper — Google review
There is a nice playground with various swings, slides, and climbing things. There is a statue of a dragon and of Aslan. There are picnic tables and a BBQ.
Toilets are near the playground.
The garden itself is small. It is overrun by bats, which is a shame.
Tiffany Woolfield — Google review
This is such a fantastic park for parties heaps of room for the kids to run around and awesome trees for them as well. Fenced to keep the younger kids in and a large shade cloth over the main play ground kids always have a great day there. And relaxing for us parents to with coffee shop 100m over beside the library the place is a treat.
Glynn Nielsen — Google review
Smaller than the botanical gardens around Townsville. Has a small lake with a water fountain, plenty of open green space, relatively quiet further into the park from Thuringowa Drive, has a playground, gazebo, several park benches, plenty of shade and many plants. Conveniently located next to the Kirwan library, and community centre.
Only issue is the now-larger section overrun by bats. It's really not fun in that section (nearly half the park). They're noisy, smelly and in their many hundreds. The areas affected by bats has meant the council has effectively closed the section with the lake, and the grass in that area is slashed, not mowed. The footpaths along the bat-area smells atrocious. The other-side of the park seems more welcoming and it's harder to hear the bats there. The playground and library is on that side.
Jai Joseph — Google review
Beautifully manicured lawns and gardens...you can observe large bats as well

Gina B — Google review
It is fondly referred to as the bat park. Thousands of bats hang from the trees during the day

This place is good for numerous reasons.
- It has a nice scenic walk along the river.
- There are many Barbecues for you to have food with people
- The pool is usually nice and cool.
- Great place to host a birthday party, lots of green grass to run around on.
- Large enough that you can run around it and get a full work out.

The riverwalk lagoons is well worth a visit. If you feel like a swim in one of the three pools supplied by Townsville city council for your convenience. Unfortunately the cafe is closed due to Covid restrictions I would imagine. A beautifully uncovered and shade covered area to swim in. Life guards on duty also in April so go for a walk or a swim through the beautiful gardens surrounding the pools or go for the walk to the Mecca café. Wheel chair access. Cheers big ears

This place is well worth the effort. The experience is simply awesome. I truly enjoyed the way this couple shared their history of wanting to keep a part of history alive by sharing with others. Definitely a must on your Bucket List for a unique experience. This was a surprise for my kids after getting through a rough year and a half. A well earned family trip. Will definitely be back to visit and hopefully experience the Wagon Tour :)
Elizabeth Muir — Google review
We did the wagon tour today and loved it. Our hosts were delightful - so knowledgeable and passionate. We were treated to smoko with Billy Tea (in my case coffee) and home cooked sweet treats. We watched an informative film about the Texas cattle drives and then boarded the horse drawn hand made wagon for a trip through the paddocks to see the variety of cattle on display. Mick is a raconteur with a cheeky sense of humour and kept us thoroughly entertained while educating us about the longhorns, bison, water buffalo and other species. On our return his wife Linda gave a talk on the artificial insemination methods used on their breeding program. We finished at the building housing a monument to JR, the Guinness World record holder for the longest horns. The impressive beast passed away last year. This was a really entertaining and informative morning that should be on everyone's to do list.

Google Maps need to move its Location on Urdera Road to avoid GPS misguiding you.
Be relaxed and have a sense of humour to really

Such an informative and insightful tour to see behind the scenes of the hard work behind discovery of gold and trying to make a living. John our guide was a wealth of knowledge and answered our many questions. During the 75 minute tour there was an interactive informative story display, so you could understand the history of its prosperous hey day. Make sure to book through the information centre or online, so as to attend the tour to avoid disappointment of missing a tour. Its a must do for anyone with interst in gold, history and of the local area.

The Battery Venue has a lot of very interesting history. Unfortunately it is quite expensive($30 for seniors).
The presenter gave a verbal explanation, tour of the area and two computer generated shows with the faces of the founders of the Battery operation. I'm sure more tourists would go if the price was more reasonable.
Geoffrey Smith — Google review
It was a really interesting tour but $30 (seniors) for 48 minutes substantially reduced its appeal. You could read much of the information in Zara Clark Museum for $5.
—————- Update on 4 August
Response to the owner’s response
I did the Venus Gold Battery Tour on Sunday 30 July. It was scheduled to commence at 10am. Looking at the time stamps on photos I took while waiting for the tour, I suspect it started a little late. The last part of the tour was a short video. As soon as the video finished, the guide said words to the effect that the tour had finished and he was off the clock. I was shocked it was such a short tour and immediately looked at my watch. It was 10:48am. The group walked back to the office. A few of us stopped on the way to look at a bower bird, its nest and what it had collected. Those photos are time stamped 10:53am to 10:56am. You will have contacts for the other people on the tour, none of whom I know. I suggest you contact them and ask for the time stamp on their bower bird photos which will also be before 11am. I then walked back to my van, drove the 4km back to Charters Towers township, found a parking space appropriate for a motorhome, walked to the Stock Exchange Cafe, ordered food and paid. The time stamp on the bank statement is 11:25am on 30 July. I encourage you to contact the Stock Exchange Cafe to confirm they have a transaction for $15 at 11:25am on 30 Jul using the same card I used to pay for your tour. Alternatively, I can email you the bank statement if you are prepared to contact me in person.
THOSE EVENTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE IF THE TOUR CONCLUDED AT 11:30AM AS YOU CLAIM.
The Venus Gold Battery Tour I did on Sunday 30 July lasted no more than 48 minutes (and arguably 43 minutes). I paid $30 as a senior for the tour. The information was very interesting, but the tour was rushed, commentary started at each location prior to everyone arriving and there was minimal to no opportunity for questions. On the basis of my experience, the tour is over priced and I would NOT recommend it. I give it 3 out of 5 stars and I am being generous.
Please check your facts before calling me a liar in a public forum again.

Very friendly, helpful and knowledgable older staff. Found out a lot of historical informaion about Charters Towers and places to visit and things to do while we stay here - especially looking/fossicking for thunder eggs.

Regrettably, we waited close to 45min for our lunch at the cafe. Yes it's busy, and tables full, but that wait was just far too long. Food and coffee was delish.

What a welcome to such a historic city..
Katie showed us everything and tailored our experience here, with laughter and big smiles.
We then had a brilliant chat with Mac about here and there. What a brilliant man.
Just small town Hospitality at it's best.

If you want useful information avoid the old bloke with the beanie at the counter! He just scoffed at my wife when she asked for information on highlights on the way to Mt Isa saying "what sort of question is that"?! He had to ask the lady who was able to give us some information while he waffled on telling stories about himself!
Frederick — Google review
Staff were so helpful and lovely. Gave me a welcome pack as a new resident of Charters towers that included many goodies including a form to change my electorate! Very helpful and a greag selection of pamphlets
Liz Xu — Google review
Very polite, extremely helpful staff that go the extra mile and obviously know their stuff and love their town

Abrupt male member of staff barking orders at us before we were though the front door. This is not charming, it is rude. If you do not enjoy dealing with the public or do not know how to talk to people, then you are in the wrong occupation and it is time to move on.

Excellent advice & service here.
But didn’t appreciate one of the staff “pushing” his views for the No Vote in the upcoming referendum.
A Visitor Centre is no place to unleash political views on passing travellers.

My partner's cousin took us here for a day trip! Oh my goodness Qld is green after all the rain.I'd never been out to Charters towers before.A very pleasant adventure lots of history old and new coming back next year for the swap meet I think

While it's not the best lookout I've ever seen in my life, it's certainly the best lookout in this area. The view is amazing and you get a panoramic view of the entire region. It is set up very well to display the history of the mining town and the surrounds and it is probably best to visit during dusk or dawn to appreciate the beautiful panoramic view when the light is good. There are toilets there and the road up is well maintained. There are also a number of boardwalks around the area and so it is wheelchair friendly. When you're in Charters Towers, if you haven't been up there before it is definitely worth heading up.

Beautiful lookout over town good place to have lunch or just admire the view. Heaps of history ranging from gold mines to explosive storage definitely visit when in charters towers

A beautiful spot that overlooks Charters Towers. There were no people at all which allowed us to explore freely, as the place was filled with informative signs and pictures. On the way up to the lookout, you'll see World War ll bunkers which have video and audio presentations inside them.
Russle La Morena — Google review
A very informative display of the gold mining history for the area. Beautiful at sunset with a wine & cheese plate. Great overall vista of Charters Towers.
Rona Bell — Google review
My mate and I stopped here during our stay in Charters Towers. The scenery from up there is quite nice. Unfortunately we were unable to watch the movie that is played there of an evening due to it needing repairs, however the WW2 bunkers had video and sound in some of them. It was amazing to be able to stand in the actual WW2 bunkers and think about the sacrifice so many made for us.

DO NO LISTEN TO GOOGLE MAPS. You'll end up on a dirt road. Just head to the end of town and take a left. The entrance is signposted and the road is steep but not hairy at all.

Great place to visit. If I'd taken my walking stick with me, I would have done the 1.1km walk down into the Gorge.
It's a nice, easy 60 kms from Hughenden, on a sealed road all the way.

Pretty awesome Lookout, park camping area looked nice to, clean tidy toilets, lots of tables and super cool little hoppy dudes 😎😁👍plus the geology is sticking right out of the ground 🤣🤣🤣

What a place, ancient landscape, the gorge is absolutely beautiful, the views from the lookout viewing plate for are fantastic, the colours in the rock walls and the shadows make for a spectacular colour array, sunrise and sunset in particular are beautiful

Most people visit Porcupine Gorge because they happen to be driving past from north to central QLD. Even though it is a bit off the beaten track it’s definitely worth a trip just to experience the gorge. It’s a very geologically significant area, an awesome outback swimming spot, has great outback camping and awesome vistas and photo opportunities. There’s a good walk down to the river achievable by most, lots of Australian wildlife. Although the road is dirt, it is usually accessible by 2wd.
Jason Adams (Jase) — Google review
If you are passing through, definitely worth stopping to see the view of Australia's "Little Grand Canyon"! Awesome place to visit for nature lovers!
Raven — Google review
Take the time to drive in the 2km to this spectacular Gorge. Who would have believed something to this depth would be just off the road. If driving through The Lynd or Hughenden, do yourself a favour & come see this place. A 70 metre drop is phenomenal, doesn't seem much when saying it but if you stand near the edge, it's horrifying🫣🫣. Totally loved it & made it the highlight of our trip🦔🏞💛🧡💛
Lee Butler — Google review
Best time of day for photos would be bang on midday so the sun is shining down into the gorge.
Best vantage point is from the track on the left of the viewing platform.
Not much water down the bottom today.
Bitumen the entire way from Hughenden which was a nice drive and a wheelchair/pram friendly concrete path from the carpark.
Keira Nicolls — Google review
Amazing views, lots to wonder with incredible geology, extremely accessible for any fitness level from carpark, it's a 1 minute walk.
Wish had more time to venture around into the ridge itself or go for a swim on the pools below.

A short 65km - 46 minutes drive from Hughendon . The first stop is the lookout where you can view over the gorge. If you want to be adventurous and walk down to the bottom you drive on to the camping area about 11km further .
The walk down is 1.1km from the top with the walk up the same path 1.2km ??. (Maybe allows the extra distance to sit under cover after you have climbed back up ). There was not a lot of water at the bottom at the moment but the walk down was worth it. When the is more water it’s a great place to swim apparently . I will say you need to be reasonably active to climb back up the steps/path ! I’m 61 and still managed it comfortably .
Well worth visiting the little Grand Canyon in the area.
Greg C — Google review
Only a 5 minute walk from the car park space. Amazing look out viewing deck. 10km from Pyramid campground but this is a must see to believe.
Robert Mitchum — Google review
The place is not very famous I think, but I enjoy it more than Uluru, the view is breathtaking, and the 1.5 km track is definitely memorable. We spend a lot of time near the creek, have a long walk with our bare feet on the white rocks and explore around.
Weijie Zhou — Google review
An incredible place to stop and admire the dramatic view. We stayed up the road at Pyramid campground which has a steep track that enters the gorge with just enough water to cool down in at the end of October.

A must stop when visiting the Flinders area. The lady on the information desk was so helpful. Nice to see someone with such enthusiasm for their town and district, a real credit to her. Found the museum interesting and informative, couple of short movies very interesting. Displays informative and great area for kids to explore as well. Thanks also for the free camp area handy to town and local attractions.

Small museum but interesting collection especially the map of AU over 100 million years ago where Perth was connected to Anatarctica and outback QLD was an inland sea. Interesting that SA and VIC were also connected to Antarctica.
There is a dinosaur replica of Muttaburrasaurus.
There’s a 5.50 per adult head entrance and merchandise. The lady was very helpful too.
OurBigLapAU2022 — Google review
Good little place to see dinosaurs. Not sure on the price though. Thought $20 per adult was a bit high

Excellent centre ... def worth a visit. Hughenden is very progressive town - noted ev chargers - and council offer a free camping ground by the notable coolibah tree for those with their own services (toilet, generator etc).
Lorraine Hird — Google review
Super interesting museum with videos of interviews with locals from Hughenden which gave it a really nice personal touch.
Louise Marks — Google review
I want to rate this higher but just can not. The site had limited items and lots of the stuff on display was from other parts of the world such as South Africa or some other location. The video was average and just the experience wasn’t worth the extra drive. We went to
Richmond and Winton for the other tours and found those great but when got here was disappointing maybe after seeing the other sites this one was just very average. People were helpful and nice in the info centre so that was good. I guess some of the items were not on display as they are upgrading but really not sure what else they could do.
Robert Lee — Google review
We had a good chat to the very nice & knowledgeable staff member Tilly.
Lots of fossiles, thunder eggs etc, info about sheep shearing/ sheeps & strikes, kids friendly play area , great film about Porcupine Gorge, great souvenir shop
Art trail - very interesting & clever installations
OTR19vantravellingaustralia — Google review
Staff here friendly and helpful. The museum is not as extensive as Richmond or those in Winton and it’s a long way to get here. They do have a full size skeleton model which puts these animals in perspective.
The staff will happily tell you about the sight-seeing options like the ancient Porcupine Gorge and the Mt Walker lookouts.
For travelers, sadly what they don’t tell you is that the 60kph zones extended WAY out of town (particularly the south/east side) and so far that you think you’ve missed the signs. Also it’s easy to miss them in the way in and there are CAMERAS right on the spot. Doing 70+kph in a 60 zone is expensive in Qld.
Ron Hoskin — Google review
Informative and interesting place, not a big collection and only one complete model - that of Muttaburrasaurus.
Very cheap $5.00 entry.
The airconditioning was not working the day we were there so it was VERY hot and uncomfortable.
Philip Moses — Google review
Nicely laid out, small museum with an entry fee of $5.50 per person. They have some small fossils from all around the world as well as some from the local area like varying teeth, shells, molluscs and fish. They also have some beautiful fossilised timbers and very colourful rocks of many varieties. There is also a short video on the formation of the Porcupine Gorge over 500 million years period.
They also have a full size replica of a Muttaburrasaurus named 'Hughie'.
There is also a section in the museum on the history of Hughenden.
If you have an interest in Australian truck heritage this spot is perfect. From old highway runners to station trucks, there is something here to interest everyone

Some of the retro and old-fashioned cars are in excellent condition, so that visitors can not only watch and enjoy the Museum's collection, but also rent a car they like to make for some unforgettable moments or for solemn event usage.
Arno's Wall, located in Winton, is a unique and quirky attraction that showcases the creative imagination of Arno Grotjahn. This modern wonder of art and architecture stretches for at least 70 meters and reaches a height of two meters. Constructed from concrete and rock, the wall is adorned with an eclectic assortment of household items such as vintage car parts, typewriters, kitchen sinks, motorbikes, and more.
Loved his wall, so unique. The sort of thing I personally love. Such a unique use of old stuff.

Michele McAllister — Google review
Well let's says you wouldn't want to be his neighbours. LOL You can get away with being a little eclectic in the country but I don't think city neighbours would go for it.
Campbell Docherty — Google review
It's a wall with all sorts of "stuff" stuck into it. Apparently the brain child of a local. Though I was not overly impressed with the wall, I have to say the park it is constructed in is beautiful. Had it not been raining at the time I would have liked to have spent more time there.

Interesting use or repurposing of old machinery and equipment.
Fascinating to walk the length and try to identify items used to construct the wall, in an area where rocks where in short supply.

How can you not give this place five stars?
Donate and enjoy an evening under the stars and in great deck chairs watching iconic movies. Located downtown in the Main Street. It’s easy to grab a meal and when you’re done just cross the street to get your best seat for a classic flick. 🍿
Make sure you also take a moment to check out all the traditional movie posters. 🎞️Loved the James Bond classic “From Russia with Love”.
Winton has been home to many movie productions so it makes sense to have their own theatre. 🎬
Paul Cranch — Google review
We went to two screenings at the Royal Theatre whilst in Winton last week. The first was on a Sunday night for a screening of Quick Gun, a western movie from 1964. Our second visit was a Nostalgia Night screening where we were were shown old cinema adds and news reels and told a bit of the Theatre's history.
We loved everything about the the movie theatre, hence we went twice. We reminisced over items in the museum (especially the roller skates and movie adds), we sat on deck chairs under the stars without having to worry about rain or mosquitoes, and snacked on jaffas and popcorn. The movie reel had to be changed part way through the films giving us a brief intermission, all of which added to the charm.
Next time we're in Winton we will definitely visit again. Highly recommended.

Definitely worth a visit when in Winton. This is by far the most charming cinema I've ever been to. As Alex, one of the volunteers said: this is the place to be, if you want to see the biggest stars in the sky and on the screen at the same time. ❤️⭐️

It was worth the drive up from Birdsville in a single day to watch the Nostalgia Night. Brilliant venue. Comfy chairs. Excellent selection of films and history story of the theatre. Will come back out for the film festival in 2023 (already used up my 2022 holidays).

Fossil preparation area & paths through recreated scenes, including a stampede of small dinosaurs.
Such a life-changing experience! I’m so glad that they decided to keep this collection in Winton. If you’re trying to decide whether you want to do this tour or not… take my words- DO IT! Absolutely incredible. Also- how amazing being able to experience a live fossil lab where the magic happens!

Really good tour. Well worth the drive. There were 5 separate tours at the site and well organized. Each site had its own unique aspect and the walkway was beautiful with really nice views. Amazing to see the actual work on the fossils by volunteers. Great to see the work they are doing to preserve the fossils.

A really special place and a must visit if you’re in the area. Seriously amazing seeing the famous dinosaur fossils when you think about how old they are. We were there scouting the location for Amazing Race Australia so got access to the building where they work on and store some seriously seriously cool bones and fossils. 100% check this place out

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Beautiful views from the top of the jump up. Loads of wildlife to be seen. Informative and fascinating tours. Our 7 year old loved it, and learnt so much. You don’t get that experience in the classroom.
If you haven’t been, you need to get there!
We purchased tickets online, so they knew we were coming. If you were going in peak time (dry season) I’d definitely book online on the website to make sure you don’t miss out

This place is amazing! Very interactive and engaging. There's a lot of information to take in but the tour guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and super friendly. Our kids 10, 8 and 5 loved the whole experience. The facilities are top class and perched atop the "jump up" have the most incredible views of the area. Well worth the money and give yourself a good half day (or more if you're able) to take it all in and enjoy the place.
Mark Pollard — Google review
This is a stunning place to visit. Set on the edge of a "Jump Up" about 12kms from Winton, the scenery to the west is spectacular. And the buildings themselves are also architecturally brilliant, blending perfectly with the stunning landscape. We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the tour. We left with a significantly improved understanding of Australian Dinosaurs, and a real admiration for the volunteers, scientists and other contributors who have put this centre together. Highly recommended and well worth the price of admission. I suggest you arrive early and do all three tours on the same day.

What an amazingly well presented unique australian experience. So well done, our 10 year old was in his element. Guides were obviously so passionate about their work and we learnt so much about this country's prehistoric life. Loved our visit. Allow at least 3 hours to do the tours and explore the site.

Amazing. We were a touch late for the 1pm tour and Tanya organised for Peter to start our own private tour to then meet up with the next group. This amazing gesture meant we didnt miss out on any part. Even without this, Peter was an amazing guide, funny, engaging and very informative. This experience has been on my bucket list since it opened and it did not disappoint!
Whilst weather impacted on our being able to visit Lark Quarry, I think we’ll be back! One teenager who is really interested in the dig-a-Dino experience.
Thank you to the team who went above and beyond to move our visit around weather conditions and just their general passion for the job and all things Dino’s. Considering they deliver the same tour hundreds of times each season, it was like we were the first group to hear the story.
Thanks again for a great visit.

An excellent museum with great information explained excellently by the tour guides. A world class centre, very impressed. A great incentive to visit Winton. An affordable snack and coffee bar, along with a good range of touristy memorabilia.

Fantastic educational experience, even if your not right int dinosaurs it’s definitely worth a visit. Incredibly interesting and informative, set in an incredibly scenic location on top of a jump up with fantastic views. Great informative displays from watching and learning the process of extracting the fossils from the matrix. The fossil presentation and display is very informative and interesting. The out door walks, displays, facilities and and vistas are both beautifully well done and very interesting. The restaurant is a magic setting. It’s only 10mins off the road about 12 km south of Winton.
