Westland Tai Poutini National Park is an incredible place with amazing views of the Southern Alps and Tasman Sea. It's a great place to walk up the Trig Path to see the glaciers, and there are plenty of other activities available such as mountain biking and hiking. The park is also home to rare and endangered animals, so it's definitely worth visiting if you're interested in nature!
The whole West Coast of this south island is amazing for hikes, glacier scenery, glacier hikes, heli scenery and star photography! Loved this national park and got some good star photography done around Frans Joseph :)

I went to the top of the track to view the glacier. A steady climb but only a few steep Arctic. Week-formed vehicle track, great for mountain bikes. Take plenty of fluid. It's quite a longish hike. The view is worth it though
Robert Scelly — Google review
Great parking spaces. Bathrooms at the start. Quick, easy flattish walk. There's a very small incline. Bench at the end to enjoy the views. A couple of waterfalls along the way. Wide and well established path to the Glacier. No dogs allowed. It's definitely easy enough for kids.

Stunning veiws. Plenty of out door activity

Easy walk up Trig path to a most spectacular sight, the southern Alps on one side and the Tasman sea and all the lagoons and beaches on the other. Endless dense rain forest between the two. If you lucky you will see white herons, spoonbills and other rare birds
Rainer Eichblatt — Google review
The hike up Alex Knob was delightful, yet strenuous. Accomplishable in 4.5 hours round trip when proceeding at a decent clip, yet well worth settling into some bushes for a couple hours at the top for cover from the wind to watch the clouds roll by with occasional glimpses at the incredible glacier.
My Toms were feeling their misuse by the end of this hike as the South Island terrain is testing them, yet I remain resolute and proud to continue to push their limits and enjoy the mocassin-like hiking which gives me a sense of connection and way to pay respects to native hikers of centuries past especially with the North American tribes that showed so much respect to the land and animals of their time.

This place is incredibly scenic and leads to the snout of Franz Josef Glacier. Another track crosses the river to the north (the photos are from this one). It is hard to tell which is the most beautiful, the vegetation or the geology, most probably the way they combine. Most of it is easily walkable but may prove slightly treacherous in bad weather. An absolute Must (but everybody knows that or obviously sees it).

Wow, just wow...what a magnificent place. Such spectacular scenery, great cafes and restaurants and plenty of activities to do...there is also a track just south of the chapel in Franz Josef that where you can see glow worms just after sun down.

Great fun! Take a hard body board or a lilo. It’s also a great spot for a picnic lunch.

Soooo beautiful and healing!!!
Tips: might not be friendly drive / trip if you have motion / car sickness 🚙 but if you can hang in there it's really worth it 😉
Another tip: pick warm and sunny day ☀

The rock slide is a lovely natural wonder which looks like it would be fun on the right day.
The reason for the low rating is re all the untidy Kiwis, there was rubbish all over the place, even in the water, blow up mattresses, tyres, bottles etc. The rubbish bins were overflowing with rubbish on the ground. If you have driven all this way with the food, drink, body boards, mattresses etc, take it all home with you. This was the worst I have ever come across in NZ. Not a good picture.
Darryl Scowen — Google review
It's okay, not great, but ok.
There aren't enough trees to sit underneath, there are only two pinic tables down there, but they're so close together. You might as well take both.
The water isn't clean, quite grotty, my daughter found a used sanitary pad in there.
And the rubbish up top is quite off putting.
Shekinah Hakaraia — Google review
You HAVE to do this. BYO boogie board. saw people doing this on inflatable mattresses, but boogie boards work best. A reasonable drive there from Gisborne but well worth it. The rocks were smooth and it looked a bit freaky, but it was pretty safe, only drama was when some kids went down with people still exiting the water and nearly got taken out. Adults at the top soon sorted it out, but probably best to call people out doing that to keep it safe. Awesome fun though. Toilets you can get changed in are near the car park.
mrshinnz — Google review
that's amazing nature you could have fun along
Beau 707 — Google review
A lot of fun if you are adventurous - imagine it would be even better if there had been a good rainfall before. A boogie board with handles would be better and safer than the assortment of yoga mats, etc that we saw
Alison Toia — Google review
There are two car parks, one at top and one at the bottom where the toilet is. There are tables and seating next to the rock slide. It's such an awesome way to cool off on a hot day. I highly recommend doing.
Leon Khan — Google review
A great place for families, no shops so a good idea to take your own food and drinks, also boogie boards, blow up air mattress and blow plastic rings to slide down on, had an awesome time.
RJBS — Google review
It looks like it could be fun, however, this would be after some rain. When we visited it was low flow and even with a boogey board etc, I wouldn’t have gone for a slide. The nearby waterfall is a better picnic spot!
Also, be careful, there is a a top carpark where camper vans should park because the bottom area does not have much space to park or turn.
Shaun Davidge — Google review
Looks like a great place to have fun sliding down the rock slides. There are warning signs up giving advice and injury is a possibility. We were on our own, so decided it wasn't safe to try, also no mobile phone connection available for emergency.
I would definitely recommend a body board or mattress for sliding down. There's a fairly deep pool at the bottom, worth checking out for obstructions hidden under water before sliding (submerged free branches etc).
Chris Barrow — Google review
Absolutely awesome natural place. Bring your own boogie board, tire or a floating device have hours of fun. Even if you don't this is a natural formation unlike any other that is just worth coming and looking at for hours. Mind that the toilet is not serviced very often, maybe contact local authorities if that's the deal breaker.
Here you can also find bunch of table for the picnic and couple of other cool places around to visit and walk around like rere falls
Edgar Kidulis — Google review
Such a great day out for everyone. For the adventurous the rockslide is terrific endless fun. You can go again and again. Make sure you bring a body board but if you forget there are some broken ones in the skips. You can also bring smaller children as there is an area suitable for them to play.
Morere Hot Springs is a 363-hectare reserve located in a natural bush setting, offering hot and cold pools hidden within native rainforest. Visitors can enjoy a large hot indoor swimming pool, cold outdoor pool, and two hot pools with a cold plunge pool accessible via a 10-minute walk through the bush. The area features stunning Nikau forest and picturesque river crossings, although some paths may be challenging for certain individuals.
The most amazing Nikau forest I have seen anywhere in New Zealand. The moss on all the rocks in the river crossings were also absolutely idyllic more so that I have seen elsewhere. The river crossings were an absolute highlight however these were a bit tricky with paths across high cliffs with big drop offs to walk, so certainly not for everyone. As an experienced tramper I had not expected much out of this reserve, but don't let the concrete path for the first five minutes fool you, a very worthwhile experience with a hot dip at the end.
Carla McDougall — Google review
Beautiful hot springs in the natural bush setting! $14 pp. Large hot indoor swimming pool and cold outdoor pool. A 10 min walk through the bush goes to the Nikau pools where there is 2 hot pools and a cold plunge pool. Changing facilities basic but hot showers available in main area near kiosk. Friendly staff. It was quiet and we had the pools all to ourselves. Worth going if passing!
Wild Lovely World (Travel Blog) — Google review
This is based on the entry to the bottom pools only and not the private pools. The heated pool is nice but would be too small on a busy day. The changing rooms seem decades old. The toddlers pool is flaking paint which isn’t ideal. Overall it was an average experience. (If people rate this 5 star they clearly haven’t visited Hanmer Springs). The walks are really good though and recommend the Nikau track.
Shane Lynam — Google review
Went for a soak during the week in the private pools, was lovely and peaceful! Well needed place to relax and wind down after a full on weekend. Beautiful scenery and was able to stay in the private pools longer due to no one booked after us. Definately need to make this a monthly thing.

This is one of the most memorable experiences I have had this xmas....48km from gisborne into some of New Zealand most glorious bush and mountains.
More hot springs offer peace, tranquility, rejuvenation, and relaxation...along with a wonderful Greenstone and Paua shop.
There are trekking hikes from 20minutes to 2.5 hours through some outstanding bush bringing you down and around to some of the most beautiful rivers and waterfalls I have ever seen...
After a trek Morere offers a swim and rejuvenating soak in the natural mineral pools...either private or public...these pools bring your body and soul back into alignment leaving you feeling like a new person with no cares in the world....then on the way out the greenstone and paua shop is a must to visit with some very beautiful pieces made by the lovely gentleman running the store ...all pieces blessed as they are made....and not to mention the lovely ladies at reception...friendly and full of information with a smile all the way. .thankyou so much....I highly recommend

Morere Hot Spring is a great place to relax for a couple of hours, when you’re driving from Napier to Gisborne.
It’s well located and inviting everyone for a driving break.
Nikau Pools are reachable after a short walk through the forest, besides the river, beautiful view.
There’re 3 pools with different temperatures.
Changing room, shower and toilet.
22.03.21 at the moment the showers for men and women are out of order, you can just use the ones at the main pool.
Highly recommended place!!!
Carlos — Google review
What a fab spot. We loved our walk up through the nikau grove and the top pools were lovely and warm on a cloudy day, and soo relaxing. We then ambled the short route back to the large pool, practicing native tree and shrub names on the way. The set up is simple, but clean. Super friendly staff at the entrance, too. Highly recommended.
Cape Kidnappers is a scenic sandstone headland located in Napier, New Zealand. The name of the peninsula originates from a Maori attempt to kidnap one of Captain Cook's crew members. It boasts the largest gannet colony in the world, making it an ideal spot for bird-watching enthusiasts. The 19km stretch of beach leading up to Cape Kidnappers offers beautiful views along with potential hazards such as landslides that visitors should be cautious about.
Worthy to go, but careful about the tide.
Betty Zhao — Google review
A remarkable place to visit around the beach. A number of holiday parks available. Beach is clean for a swim however tides can be heavy.
Hash Khan — Google review
Another beautiful day 13/19/2023 in the Hawks Bay Region. The walk to Cape Kidnappers (Te Kauwae-a-Māui) must be taken during low tide and apparently takes 5 hours or more to walk. We did not partake and just enjoyed the view from this point. The cape also has the world's largest Gannet.
Annie Hackett — Google review
When we went there it was at our own risk and we actually saw a massive land slide
Those 19km along the beach are beautiful and it was really nice to see the Gannet colony!
Julie Alcover-Martinez — Google review
Could only drive to motor camp. There is another 3 hour walk from here at low tide. You can see the cliffs from the motor camp. Better to pay for a tour to see the ganats.
Kennedy — Google review
Even if you don’t go all the way to the bird colony at the end, it’s a stunning walk along the beach. Towering cliffs overhead. Beautiful geography. An easy to navigate beach walk, though pay attention to tides.
There are some inlets to explore that look like they fill with water when it rains. But don’t expect to be able to climb up to the top of the cliff face anywhere easily.
There is parking at the end of the road, then walking through a trailer park at the beginning of the beach.
Great views. Highly recommend this hike.
Kevin McPhillips — Google review
The gannet colony is not accessible by road anymore, because they decided to make the road directly to the colony private and closed.
Now you can either walk a 5h - mostly in direct sun - track (there and back), which you have to sync with the tide or go there by boat.
Of course u have to pay for the boat, how convenient that the road is closed now.
Just skip this region.
Tibor Girschele — Google review
The view is absolutely stunning! Remember to check the tide before you go. You can call to the office and they will tell you the exact time to start / end the walk. Whole walk is about 16km (6hrs - 7hrs).
There is a only toilet before you started to hike up the bluff to the Gannet Colony.
Rui Rui — Google review
Group bike ride out there awsum day but if you are going out there pick the tide time. We had a great time
Paul McBrearty — Google review
Nice scenic area and the Gannett colony you get very close to the birds its a 9 km hike along beach each way or pay 60 to ride on a tractor trailer with seats to get there

Great place to see gannets and learn more about the four colonies that resides there! We went with Gannet Safari Overland tour and did not regret the trip
Bluff Hill Lookout is an iconic tourist attraction in Napier, offering stunning views of the city, ocean, and harbour. Situated on top of Mount Maunganui, the lookout point was built to give people a better understanding of Napier's changing landscape and to help define specific areas around town. Offering stunning perspectives of the port below and Hawkes Bay's coastline, Bluff Hill Lookout is definitely one sight not to be missed when visiting Napier.
An excellent view at the lookout with toilets and drinking water nearby. Be careful on the drive up as roads are really narrow!
Benjamin T — Google review
Good view over the northern part of the bay and the ports. Nice drive / walk up through nice neighbourhood. Some more interpretive / informative signage would have been great and you can’t actually see to the south over Napier town which I thought you could
Julia Wick — Google review
The fun starts on the drive up to the lookout. Cool route up to the lookout with lots of signage directing drivers. The lookout has really amazing views over a large portion of Napier and Hawkes bay. There was a fair amount of parking up at the lookout point and a toilet was also available. Great spots to take photos when up in Napier.
Maurice Valente — Google review
Easy climb to the small cliff in Napier, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. If you happen to travel to Napier even for a short stay this is a possible walk you could plan. At the peak the view is beautiful. You could also see the Napier port very closely

Great place to take visitors to enjoy the vista and Napier Port. Cruise ships have returned after nearly 3 years of the covid pandemic. We viewed the return of the Ovation of the Seas.

Didn't get the views I was hoping for. Good for views of the docks and Ahuriri but not Napier. Tricky, twisty, uphill Road to get there.

Scenic and beautiful view of the ocean. Careful to drive up as there are narrow roads and some cars parked up along the side. There is a nice spot with flowers for photo taking. Overall, if you're in town why not visit if the weather permits
Mangayarkarasi Rajakrishnan — Google review
Not a great drive up, very steep and had my partner very stressed and telling me to find another way down cause he wasn't doing that again. BUT... the view was beautiful and much worth the stressful drive up (much easier coming down). You've got to go on a sunny day to get the best results. You can see the coast line and the port and ships out at sea. Great place to take photos

Beautiful view across Hawke Bay and you can see the cruise ships docked right below you.

The National Aquarium of New Zealand is a large aquarium located in Napier, New Zealand. The facility has exhibits on marine and land animals as well as an underwater tunnel and shark encounters.
Great experience for the whole family with lots to explore & see. My youngest daughter has been fascinated by the underwater world and so we found ourselves checking out fish, sharks, stingrays, penguins and many other marine creatures in the aquariums. The layout was great, exhibits were all well designed and interactive, and presentation during penguin feeding was educational & fun.
Best to arrive around 1pm in time for the little Penguin feeding at 1:30pm and Oceanarium Diver hand feeding at 2pm. Highly recommend a visit if you're in Napier.
Dan McLaughlin — Google review
Don't be fooled by the outside look. Once you're inside, you'll be surprised how big the aquarium is. It has a lot to offer.
Great place to go for families if you're in town and want to see aquatic life.
Ferdinand Go — Google review
My experience was really amazing! Welcoming staff and a nice variety of marine inhabitants. Try to visit it during feeding times to add more experience. Also don't forget to walk around the building to look at graffiti.
The only thing is that maybe I would like to see a little bit more of the penguins' area and can't wait till they have sea horses back.
But I definitely would like to come back and recommend this place to my friends.

I have been following the adorable penguins at the National Aquarium on social media for years - so I was so excited to finally have a chance to meet them at the aquarium! We did a penguin encounter, Matt was our guide and not only did he show us a great time with the penguins but he took us over to watch the divers feed the fish and was happy to chat with us about them! All of the staff we interacted with were very friendly and seemed to really enjoy what they do. We also got to see the elusive kiwi who was bustling around the enclosure when we came through. There were many interesting creatures and exhibits and it was a fun way to spend the afternoon. And I love the penguins more than ever!!

We found the price reasonable to get in and there was plenty to see. We enjoyed going on the conveyor, under the water the most. There was a fair variety of animals and good information about them all. Great for the kids, worth the stop if you have time.

This one of the best aquariums ever. There are staffs around who tell you all the amazing facts and stories about the the animals in the place. The place is well sought out in terms of layout and they do give a map upon arrival; so u don't actually miss out on any enclosures.

This place is great to take the family! It has a display of a giant squid and a walk through fish tank where you can see the aquatic life swim all around you. There's also a second level with interactive educational displays for kids as well. I would highly recommend it!

Loved seeing all the animals and got to see the penguins at feeding time and they were adorable so definitely try and time your visit with the feeeding times. A couple of the interactive activities weren't working but didn't mind as they were more for the kids anyway. Great for children but anyone can go and enjoy their time here. Visited in November but forgot to review :)

A great little aquarium. Good displays, and information throughout. Plenty of fish to see as well as penquins. A good sized tunnel going through, with part of the walk way in which moves. Friendly staff. There is a gift shop too with a wide range of things to buy. Worth while experience and great to bring kids along.

It's one of those places where you need to take your time to get your moneys worth. Also ring up to find out when events happen to get more bang for your dollar. Was hoping to see sharks but none were present, despite it being the mascot icon for the business. It's a good place for kids, however they do get inpatient so expect to race through it.
Troy Haronga — Google review
My kids liked it so I give it 5 stars.
Very nice aquarium for such a small town.
Very good day spent with family and a nice different activity to do with your kids.
The only thing that bothered me is how incredibly small the sea turtle aquarium is, it's really sad. I'm no turtle specialist but from what I saw during my visit I think she could do with something bigger even if she's alone in there.
Alex Icrelad — Google review
A wonderful experience at the aquarium.
My partner and I had a great time wandering through the aquarium seeing all the animals and reading their stories.
We finished up with the penguin feeding experience. Our guide was Sam and it was obvious that she really cares for the penguins here. She knew them all by name and we had a great time learning all the penguin personalities while feeding them.
I can't recommend it enough

Great atmosphere & great service! The people are so kind.
Always worth a stop in on your way through.
$26 per adult, but discounted if you’re local!
Great little side cafe & toilets throughout the walk
Tess Hutchings — Google review
Good aquarium. Small but lots to see. Only spent an hr and bit here.
Kiwi exhibition available. Was great to see one nice and close.
Does get busy, and try to avoid the cruising folk.
The price does not equate to the quality and exhibitions available. I believe it should be slightly cheaper.
Desiree — Google review
Amazing place where kids and adults can learn about sea creatures and some land animals and see a kiwi bird. We didn't expect much since this place was not listed among 10 best places to see Kiwi, but we were blown away by Kiwi. The enclosed is quite large for a single bird, and it is almost completely dark since Kiwi is nocturnal. But as your eyes adjust, you start to see objects behind the glass, and if Kiwi is not hiding, you will be able to observe how it finds food in the rotten logs or in the foliage on the ground. Besides Kiwi, you can also observe sting rays and other spies of fish, small penguins, giant sea turtles, iguanas, and other animals. Highly recommend!
Larisa Fay — Google review
Burny the penguin was my top highlight, that little guy is such a character. I enjoyed the fact there were lots of topics and interactive things to do, like the space section. Great way to see these creatures up close and its great to know they are being cared for when they aren't fit for the big wide world.

A lovely family-friendly venue with a wide variety of aquatic life as well as some iconic NZ fauna (kiwi & tuatara). The little penguins are adorable and the tunnel through the main tank where stingrays fly through the water is amazing. Coupled with a yummy cafe and a good gift shop made a great excursion.

We visited with the kids' cousins, who are locals. The staff were so kind, especially in the gift shop when it took a while for the kids to decide. We enjoyed the scavenger hunt. We arrived in time to see the penguins being fed. Great to have the extra info.
The space rockets was a really fun activity. Dinosaurs and colouring also a hit with my kids. So much to explore!

We were lucky enough to be able to snag a wine tasting experience without a booking, but book ahead to make sure you don't miss out. The staff were lovely and our wine connoisseur told us about each of the wines we were tasting, the regions and soil profile for each of the wines and how their wines might differ from others from the same region.
The wine tasting came in two different classes, with the base 'family' wines costing $35pp, and the prestige tasting $65pp. The prestige tasting includes more wines and also includes side by side tasting of different wines of the same variety or vintage - a real treat for anyone who enjoys wine. Whilst it was a little steep price wise to what we are used to, the whole tasting experience was unique and ultimately we were very happy to pay what we did.
The wines themselves were delicious and are to be enjoyed for what they are - don't compare them to what you might be used to from Australia/Europe etc. The Chardonnay was a treat and a real eye opener having never had a drinkable, let alone enjoyable, Chardonnay back home. The Sophia blend was also a real stand out.
Food platters were available and ours was delicious, showcasing beautiful local and seasonal produce. The caramelised walnuts were a hit.
The grounds and views from the cellar door were also amazing.
This winery is a must visit if you are in the Napier/Hawkes Bay region of NZ. Book ahead of time, and allow a good 2 hours at least to make the most of the whole experience if going for the premium tastings.

We had the most amazing lunch at Craggy Range Winery. From the second we turned the corner into the driveway we were blown away beyond belief.
The setting is absolutely stunning, service was impeccable and the food was delicious.
A one of a kind venue in every way possible.

Excellent service, from the moment we stepped foot inside. Food was absolutely delicious, very flavourful. I would recommend to share a dessert, your eyes will be bigger than your tummy by the end! Drinks were a good choice too, from the cocktail and wine menu! The atmosphere was great. Definitely a winery to visit in Hawkes Bay. Wine and cheese outside as the sun sets, perfect!

We went to Craggy Range winery, which was another amazing experience. First note: Bookings are Essential! Booking in hand, we arrived at this premier destination in Hawkes Bay. It is a family owned boutique winery with a restaurant, accommodations and well crafted, elegant wines. Based on the reviews, dinner would have been amazing; but, this wine experience was well worth every penny, creating memories that I am packing back to the States.
The hostess, Lauren, was friendly and welcoming. We appreciated her beyond words and felt immediately at home. Once seated at an outdoor table, we basked in the fantastic scenery
that is Te Mata Peak; and then our wine guru and educator, Michael, joined us at the table and the experience of being in the premier wine country of New Zealand came to life. Michael was wonderful. I asked him to speak slower, as I am not Kiwi-lingual; we laughed and he shared his amazing knowledge, from the story of the winery to his love and passion for each of the five wines I enjoyed. He knew his grapes and, as I asked a ton of questions, he jovially explained and shared his passion with me. It was awesome and a highlight of my trip.

Went in for a simple wine-tasting. The host offered us a private booth for the tasting and joined us as he poured each wine to explain in-depth the history, grape and body of each pour. Had his iPad on his hand to show us the sites of the vineyards. We’ve been to many tastings but this was certainly a notch-above our previous experiences.

We had a wonderful experience at the cellar door, trying over 9 wines from their family and prestige ranges, paired with a fantastic meat and cheese board, particularly want to thank you for Kevin’s help, he gave us a wonderful time for this tasting session, lots of details of wines and story! Their cellar door is in a spectacularly beautiful building with views of Te Mata peak across the street. We also took dinner here and food was excellent, couldnt be better! Must visit!!

Craggy range was an amazing experience. The wine tasting was exceptional, Maddi the staff member who served my friend and I and took us through our wine tasting was amazing and grew our love for wine. Definitely will be going back and will recommend.

Almost a 5 star but dropped the ball at the end of our chefs menu lunch with matched wines. Absolutely stunning property, menu was great and food delicious, however attention to detail got left behind at the last course. While other guests were being offered seats outside to enjoy deserts and drinks, we got asked if we wanted our taxi ordered. When advised no we would like to stay and enjoy a wander around the property we were left waiting almost 20 minutes for our bill. At first we didn't think much of it, then it dragged on and on to the point our waitress had moved on to serving others.
Shame that the experience finished the way it did.

We visited the cellar door for a wine tasting and had a lovely time! The views are picturesque, and we enjoyed chatting with Gabriel (our guide for the tasting). The wines were delicious, I'd recommend stopping here if you're looking for an upscale stop on your Hawke's Bay wine tour.

We stayed at the Rose cottage over the Easter weekend and had a top notch experience. From checking in on day one to checking out on the last day everything was spot on. The staff were so attentive, responsive, friendly and very professional. Nothing was overlooked. We had slight issue with the toaster in the cottage which was replaced in an instant. The complimentary breakfasts and bottle of wine were a very nice touch. If I was forced too, the only tiny suggestion would be for one/two other spreads to be available.
We also were booked for dinner in the restaurant and theres noit much to say about that as its got to one of the best in the country..... again the staff are well trained, professional and friendly with nothing left to chance. Will be back for sure....

My wife and I visited this place on our 20th anniversary day last month. We chose Craggy range shared menu for lunch and surprised because of the service and quality. When we asked about the single menu to staff, he explained well about it and was very nice. We didn't think we could have this kind of well coordinated course menu. All ingredients of cuisines were very harmonious and very natural. We enjoyed the meal and were very happy all day thanks to satisfaction for the meal. After lunch, we moved to winery to have wine tasting. Frankly, we didn't know much about wine. But staff was very kind and he explained us about wines. It was great time as well. Specially thanks to Jack H at restaurant and Oscar at winery who served us with kind and smile. The staffs and Craggy range gave us unforgettable day.

The accommodation at Craggy Range is an incredible experience. From the moment we arrived, we were taken care of and felt very relaxed. The facilities are top notch. The room was spacious and well appointed, bed was very comfortable and the living space was outstanding. The breakfast in the mini bar ready for the next day is a fantastic inclusion.

The experience and facilities absolutely matches the fine wine. We had an amazing experience taken through the different regions where the wines are made by one of the winery connoisseurs. She was so knowledgeable and super friendly. We will absolutely recommend to visit if you’re looking a unique experience when at Hawkes Bay

We had an exceptional dinner at the Craggy Range restaurant last night. My partner and I had the tasting menu and from the moment we walked in we felt very special and looked after. Our glasses never ran out and the food came out frequently. We cannot emphasise enough how good the food is! Interesting and delicious combinations and plenty of it. Sitting at the chefs table, we loved interacting with the kitchen and extra items that weren’t even on the menu came out as a special treat - including one of our favourites the paua, which was a great surprise. We paired with the premium wine tasting and for only an extra $20 would highly recommend. The first was Tattinger which in itself probably paid for the extra price tag. Our waiter looked after us excellently, with great knowledge of the wines that he was serving and a warm and charismatic touch. Nothing was ever too much - eg sensing we were full after the dessert he offered if we would like to share a dessert and they’ll make us some truffles to take away - absolutely just what we felt like. We will definitely be back next time we are in the Hawkes Bay.

We stopped here for lunch during a wine touring event. The wind are (of course) excellent and this rating is for the whole experience, not just the wine.
The food itself was well worth the stop. Five stars for the food quality. It had a dazzling array of flavors, tastes, colors and presentations. Certainly Michelin quality. No complaints about the food. I will say it’s odd (to me) but that they offer a la cart, 3 course, and 5 course meal options—- but the whole table has to pick the same option. For our group of five the only choice we could all agree on was a la cart.
Maybe there was a staffing issue, but the wait times were surprisingly long. This was a Tuesday 1p lunch. There were 4 tables of 4-6 people elsewhere in the restaurant. The kitchen is open viewing and there were 5 chefs working along with a wait staff of 3. No joke, the wait time between courses wa 30-40 min. Our meal took 2h for an entree and a main course. No apps or dessert. I don’t know if that’s what they’re going for, but on a day where we were touring wineries we had to cancel one stop because the f the delay.
Also, again oddly to me, our server disappeared for 20+min and another waiter had to take over our table. Again maybe something was going on… not sure.
I don’t think we’ll be back. Food was good tho.

We enjoyed an awesome afternoon dining in the Resturant a Craggy Range. Service from waiting and front of house staff was 6 star, friendly but not overbearing.
Food was phenomenal, we had eight courses and they were all excellent. We sat at the kitchen window bar to eat and were able to watch the kitchen staff go about their work; a well oiled machine and plenty of respect shown to all by all.
The restrooms were modern and very clean.

Amazing winery! Our server Laura was incredible. She had extensive knowledge about every wine, and paired vintages of the same style in different years so that we could taste the differences. She answered all our questions and taught us so much. Highly recommend the tasting and the cheese board. Thank you so much for the wonderful experience, Laura and Peter!

Exceptional service - very attentive yet with a nice dash of laidback Kiwi casualness. The food was incredible as were the wines. Cannot beat the location! Loved wandering through the vines to see the impressive kitchen garden afterwards.

We specifically booked this experience for the tasting menu. It’s a lovely five course experience. We’d had a tasting menu elsewhere the day before where each item was individually plated, and I think that spoiled us a little. We do like the performance and art of individual plating, but the presentation and food were both still beautiful at Craggy Range (some of the courses are all served on one plate and each person takes their portion). Dietary needs were accommodated and the wine pairings were thoughtfully explained. We had a table by a window and enjoyed the sweeping views. For a splash out of an evening–this is a lovely spot.

We enjoyed a tasting on the patio followed by the eight-course tasting menu dinner seated at the chef's table overlooking the kitchen. Service was excellent, food was delicious, wines were well paired, and watching the intricate dance that is meal-preparation in a fine-dining restaurant is immensely entertaining. One of our favorite courses was the bread served with Camembert butter with honey and salt. By the time the dessert arrived, we thought we would not be able to eat another bite, but we finished the beautiful soft meringue with rhubarb to the very bottom of the dish. A most enjoyable experience of food and wine.

Of the best spots in NZ and it truly delivered. We did the set menu, and given I’m dairy free set menus are a pain. Not here, they made each dish as special as the others with a DF twist - service was awesome - I can’t see why many people call this the best restaurant in NZ. Worth every penny.

Te Mata Peak, located 16km south of Havelock North, rises dramatically from the Heretaunga Plains and is part of a 1-sq-km park. The peak features hiking and biking trails, as well as breathtaking views from its summit lookout that stretch to Hawke's Bay, the Mahia Peninsula, and distant Mt Ruapehu on clear days. Visitors can access the peak by either driving or walking up a well-maintained track with clear directional guidance.
great view. this is not only for walking you can drive all the way up, plenty of car park at the top. we enjoy. there’s picnic tables on the way up stunning view as well.

Long 40 kph drive up to top but view was worth it. Public are not allowed up peak because there is a lodge up near peak and you have to get past electric gate. We were lucky as a taxi had to go and pick up a passenger and we were at the front and drove through when gate opened.

Amazing Vistas, great place and must do if you visit Napier.
You can walk, run or drive to the peak.
If you want to drive check the map carefully to ensure you are en route to the top of the mountain car park. Apple Maps took us to Te Mata Park.
If you want to have a bit of a hike, there is a car Park at Te Mata Park, it took us just under 2 hours to walk up, but we were stopping to take photo’s in particular the small Redwood grove that you pass on the way up. It’s a moderate uphill walk most of the way. No real steep sections.
The view from the top, absolutely worth it no matter which way you get there.

If the place is busy is for a reason. Windy, very windy but what a view! Great option for the whole family. You can drive until the very top, but you can accept the challenge and do some of the tracks around and enjoying the sleeping giant.

A beautiful walk sunrise, midday or sunset. Warm oranges to rich green colours. Plenty of forest and bird, and views in all directions. Recommend parking at the end of Tauroa road, and walking the chambers walk and onto blue or red to the top (reasonable fitness required). Visit the giant redwoods on the way. There's toilets at the carpark and a filtered drinking fountain. Expect around 2+ hours return to the carpark if you are sight seeing.

I recently had the chance to visit the one and only Te Mata Peak. Truly one of New Zealand's hidden gems. The views on offer from the top are nothing short of breathtaking - as far as the eye can see, vast expanses of picturesque landscapes enveloped by the pristine sky.
While the roads leading to the top are quite narrow, the drive is worth every bit. Hiking up the peak is equally exhilarating, with well-maintained paths ensuring safety for all ages. Te Mata Park's intrusion into the wilderness feels minimal yet abundantly immersive.
Facilities like clean restrooms, ample parking, and informative signage round off the experience wonderfully. Moreover, the staff is polite, knowledgeable, and quite keen on maintaining the ecological balance of the area.
I highly recommend Te Mata Peak for both locals and tourists looking for an adventure with an unforgettable view. This place truly redefines natural beauty and teaches one to appreciate the artistic finesse of Mother Nature.
Do remember to stick around for the mesmerizing sunsets - they're the cherry on top! My experience at Te Mata Peak was truly remarkable, and it's already calling me back.

Birdwoods has something to offer everyone. There is a gallery, café ☕🍰 a beautiful sculpture garden, and an old school sweet shop 🍭🍬
The Gallery features New Zealand and African art and crafts including textiles, collectables, furniture, jewellery, basketry and ceramics 📿
The food looked and smelled amazing. They also offered caninet food like delicious cakes, scones, with tea and espresso coffee ☕🍰 Bookings are essential. Unfortunately I was turned away, or had a very long wait because I didn't book ☎️
The Sculpture Garden is quite expansive and displays works by acclaimed stone sculptors, as well as artists using recycled material 🌍
The Sweet Shop allows you to take a step back in time, selling hundreds ofold fashioned sweets from my childhood 🍭🍬

A big must here. Fantastic food service and atmosphere, surroundings.
The Cafe through the gift shop which is crazy with keepsakes dishes and alsorts. The shop has a lot of imported goods from south Africa which are just purely beautiful. The money you spend , some is gifted back to the communities in which they are made.
The Cafe which haz a lovely menu and cabinet food , is situated out the back. There are rooms to choose a table from outside in the sunroof or in the sun or shade under big trees. Or inside upstairs with a view over the property which is beautifully littered with sculptures. The pond is worth a walk to where the moscovy ducks hide in the shrubbery and pop out to greet you. There is a big rhino head sitting in the water looking realistic.
I can highly recommend the carrot cake and a glass of local rose to complement it.
The service is friendly and very accommodating.
Don't forget the sweet shop also with its many jars where you can pick a mix of your choice.
The ice cream shop was closed . The children have a place to play and there's plenty of parking.

Birdwoods is in a stunning location, we sat outside for lunch, it was a little breezy the day we went but the outdoor space is great. Its reasonably sheltered, heaps of room for kids to play on the lawn and the sculpture garden itself is also worth a wander. There were ostriches next to the parking lot which was cool. There are heaps of shade trees and beautiful smelling flowers. The sweet store has loads of delightful things and there is the ice cream cart for the warmer days. Its was pretty busy the day we went so the service was a little slow but the staff were all quite attentive. My grandmother had the salmon quiche which she enjoyed immensely, I had poached eggs on toast which was nicely cooked but the vegetarian options are a little plain. Highly rate the iced coffee I had, that was amazing. The entrance to the cafe can be a little confusing as the path is a little narrow and tucked away so I recommend parking in the overflow car park to walk directly into the garden.

Beautiful place to visit, lovely garden and games for the kids. The only let down was your male server, who took their time coming to take our order and then when he did take our order he didn’t listen because he got the sweet scone wrong, and left off a drink and my childs meal. So the adults meals arrived but nothing for the young one - in service the kids meal should always come out before or at the same time. If i hadn’t have checked, nothing would have come. I have time to write this review as I’m sitting here waiting for the meal to come.
Better service required to make it a super enjoyable experience. However, a stunning place with tasty good value food.
De la Terre Winery offers a warm welcome to wine lovers, with an interesting lineup of wines including vintage Methode Traditionnelle blanc de blancs, viognier, chardonnay, syrah, and tannat-based red. Winemaker Tony Pritchard may even show you his old-school method of hand-twisting bottles for less sediment movement. The winery's idyllic setting amidst creative sculptures and structures provides a retreat from urban reality.

We went to the ‘cafe’ yesterday and were weirdly greeted at the door by a young guy who opened it, popped his head out and told us we could not come in as they were busy. This was bang on lunch time… (12:30pm) and we were the only car in the car park? We were only after a coffee and wanted to enjoy it outside…
Even my 4 year old asked why can’t we stay here? I replied… the man told us they are too busy to which he responded ‘but it’s just us?’
Regardless if they had a large booking coming in, we were interested in the ambience of the place and it would have been nice to look around and been given the option of a cup of coffee, at the least- after all they are advertised as a CAFE and not a restaurant?!
Please train your staff on the importance of guest experience and front of house responsibilities.

This is an outstanding winery to visit. We spent a very enjoyable hour or so speaking with the winemaker who very generously and patiently described how he makes some outstanding wine. The passion and knowledge was clear to see and appreciated. The wines were amazing anyway but tasted that bit better with that little bit of knowledge. We didn't try the food but delicious aromas made us regret that as we left. You need to try the reserve Tannat, just one out of several interesting varietals that are sensational.

A beautiful country drive culminating in an idyllic setting with fine wine and food. Looking out over the rural landscape beyond Tony's creative and quirky sculptures and structures seems like a retreat from urban reality. The food menu (pizzas and platters) is smallish, delicious and satisfying. That the pizzas are wood-fired in front of you doesn't even warrant a mention. Of course the oven is made by Tony too. This is a hidden gem in Hawkes Bay.

Absolutely disgusting service! My family and I thought we would get a nice drink and maybe a pizza. However we were rudely turned away in front of all the other patrons. Basically we were shunned away. Horrible experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone! Local to the area got home and called up and were told we could have a booking in40minutes. Small local businesses should not complain about needing support if they don't want to serve people. The children were so embarrassed that they couldn't even have an apple juice. So we then had to explain to them why.

I was really looking forward to visit this winery but could not help myself to walk away disappointed after experiencing the owner/winemakers attitude. Knows his stuff when it comes to making wine and could not fault the wine but the owner really had a bad attitude when we left. Wine samples are one sip and your done. Not worth it for $15 per tasting. Owner also charged us for an extra tasting and when I pointed it out in a polite way, he had a snotty answer and still charged us extra.

Stayed here a little while back and thaught it was time to come clean and leave a review. Great stay, fantastic white water rafting but have to say Miranda.... Wow what a woman, she sure knows her way round that Kitchen like no other. She rustled up a banging roast upon arrival, pulling out all the stops, the following morning I bit into a bacon roll that tasted like it was sent from heaven, followed by vegetable samosas for lunch that equally tasted like they had been delivered by a flock of angels.
If she ever wants to leave dont let her, you will have to lock her in and pay her what shes wants.
Thanks George

What an amazing stay. Location is really remote. Best you self drive to get there. Final 5km or so on gravel road to location. In a Valley. But what a wonderful place. Out of the city. Wonderful staff. We stayed in a family lodge with 1 King bed and 4 bunk beds + 1 common toilet. All meals on site. Fresh produce. Superb roasted vegetables and dinner was really heartening. We took a rafting trip that lasted 6 hrs from 930am till 330pm. Hazel was our lead. And she led the paddling and manoeuvering out of difficult waters + directed the fun, as well as laid out the lunch picnic, cut the capsicum, provided the spread, and really wowed us with her efforts. All thermal and wet suits provided and highly recommended experience. I rank this as a must go for your northern NZ trip. About 5.5 hrs drive down South from Auckland so you need to plan your trip and journey well.

Immaculate vibes from the staff and the river is gorgeous. Had a great time white water rafting. Just note that their only showers are in a roofed outdoor accommodation which adds to the rustic feel.

What an incredible experience! The largest tucked away in the quaint hills of New Zealand. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the lodge itself was beautiful, and the river rafting was next level exciting. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, or an adrenaline pumping adventure, River Valley is the place for you.

Absolutely LOVED my time here, everyone is so friendly I felt like part of the family from the minute I got picked up in the van!
The horses are gorgeous, the location is stunning and the staff are wonderful. I would *highly* recommend booking in for dinner, breakfast AND lunch because the food here was probably some of the best meals I ate during my time in New Zealand.
Can’t wait to visit again 🐴❤️

Outstanding time on the Grade 5, 1/2 day river trip. Many thanks to Janey, our guide, and Max (leading the B team in the other raft). Beautiful river with the thrills and laughs you're searching for, and all in an amazing location. It couldn't have been better , fully recommended to all.

Couldn’t be any better. Did the package where you sleep over and have food provided with your rafting. Was totally worth it. Family owned and very professional. Super knowledgeable and kind staff. Rapids were great and swimming after the trip in the river was not to be missed. Shaun was our guide and his 30 years of experience really showed.

River Valley Lodge is an awesome place to escape for a night or longer. 30 minutes out of Taihape and at the bottom of a gorge right on the river, it's well and truly remote.
We stayed in the Bus which was a cozy space that really only lacked some curtains or blinds. Tucked away from the main lodge with its own decking area overlooking the river and some cool bathroom facilities which featured an open wall to the view.
Dinner was in the main lodge; you eat whats freshly grown and prepped that day so maybe not a place for fussy eaters but me and my wife loved it. Super yummy, super relaxed vibe. Big shout out to Hazel and Melissa for making us feel right at home and cooking great food.
We will definitely be back to try some of the adventure activities and then chill out afterwards.

Actually a really great location with everything you need. Horse riding, rafting... are offered. It's a shame that if you book a spa suite you can't use the spa area after you arrive because it's already booked out by other guests - so why did I book a spa suite? Furthermore, everything seems to be geared towards profit and profit. Even though we booked including breakfast, we charged the second cup of coffee separately - that's ridiculous and I would think about that as management. Receiving a negative review for this wouldn't be worth a cup of coffee to me.

A hidden jewel in the heart of Tararua. This is an amazing treat for all the family, young and old, boys and girls of all ages. See all your favourite children's stories and rhymes recreated in moving and highly detailed displays. Lots of chances for kids to push buttons and interact with the displays. The entrance to this wonderland is on the main street of Dannevirke. Only $3 entry for kids and $7 per adult. Definitely worth a visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed an hours rafting (2 teams in 2 boats) for our end of year team get together) followed by a fabulous meal.
We were all blown away with the experience. Thoroughly enjoyed it! And none of us wanted it to end. What a stunning day and fabulous local fun & enjoyment. We enjoyed a great meal and drinks before our minivan driver came to pick us up.
A number of us talk about going back.

It rained and poured and the river flooded - but we had an awesome time! Stayed in the budget cabin - as we had a dog - which was old school and basic. Everything is clean and tidy, toilets and shower looked new and were clean. Beautiful spot, we walked over the bridge to the more upmarket site both days and had a great spa. Made friends with our neighbours and joined them for drinks both nights. All in all a great place! Will be back again soon!

I decided last minute to drive north from Wellington and to be fair I didn’t think anyone would answer the phone when I called just after 7pm. Paul was great and went out of his way to ensure I had a cabin for the night. It was welcoming to arrive and the lights for the cabin were on and it made it easy for me to spot. The cabin itself is basic but that’s all you need, I didn’t expect a kitchenette so that’s a bonus. For the price it’s good value. Phone reception is surprisingly good which means I can work in the morning from here before setting off. I recommend staying here if you want to break up your trip heading north or south.

This was the best campsite we had in North Island. Toilets were pristine and warm (warming lights) and had extra chairs and shelves for us to put our clothes and toiletries. The view from the campsite is beautiful and so soothing with the sounds of the river rushing. My girls loved to play along the river which was only like ankle deep near the shores and was quite safe with no sharp stones. The cafe food was delicious as well.

Pro tip: book the hot tub for the full Mangaweka experience!

We stayed at the Awastone camp-site in a tent, which was in close access to the cafe. This is a beautiful spot, it is close to the river for swimming, and we went kayaking with a guide which we enjoyed immensely, it was safe and Cesar was very helpful and experienced. Can’t miss this classic brewery if you’re in the area! The food is great and the brewery tour is everything you want it to be. Nice garden to walk around with games to play and fun decor in general. If you have the kids with you maybe skip the tour but lots of space for them to run around outside while you’re having a pint.
The store is pretty pricey but has some unique stuff.

Exceptionally dog unfriendly place. Very disappointed to be here. Couldn't enjoy my drink and stay here. If you have a dog you have to stay on the parking lot. Tables looked disgusting, like never been wiped, the floor is also dirty, so you don't want to stay outside and for sure you don't want to leave your dog there alone.

Top spot that is nestled away between Woodville and Pahiatua. We've driven past this spot so many times and finally decided to stop in, a great Eggs Benedict with a morning beer... We will definitely be back and spend more time exploring the grounds and walking through the museum.

Tl;dr: buy the Brewery Tour just for the added benefits, but skip the actual tour itself, that's not worth your time.
Full review:
Since they do not tell you upfront, I'll do: be warned the brewery itself is actually closed down. The Brewery Tour is a sad display of faded glory. Not a single drop of beer is still being brewed here these days. Not in the beautiful (but run down and sadly decaying) classic TUI tower (- fair enough, that was to be expected), but also not in the massive hall that was built next to it, no not even in the little micro brewery attached to it. "Closed during COVID" and not reopened since. Whatever the reason, it makes the whole tour just a boring recollection of "Back in days..."- and "Here used to be..."-stories. Inside the micro brewery they'll have you take a look at some dust covered kettles and tanks, while the guide points at a poster that explains how beer is brewed. Wikipedia does a better job. This is not why you go on brewery tour. It lacks the distinctive smell, the rumbling and buzzing of machines and brewers, and actually seeing with your own eyes what magic it takes to turn just a bunch of plants, water and yeast into the golden foamy goodness we all so yearn for. Save your time and money for a brewery that's still actually up and running and brewing.
HOWEVER: for the $25 that the so-called tour sets you back, you do get a bunch of extras which in the end luckily made us feel like we weren't ripped off. First you get a big glass of beer in their onsite pub, plus another free beer in one of their partner pubs dotted across the country (just don't lose the voucher). That alone probably breaks you even. But then you'll also get a free beer glass, and 10% discount on buying beer and/or a shirt/sweater from the store. If you're not planning on redeeming any of these, don't do the tour. If you are, buy the ticket and skip the tour, or go and be prepared to be disappointed, or hope they've improved it.
Victor Luijk — Google review
Whilst the brewery tour is a bit short, it's an incredibly interesting and well set out place to visit and learn the history of.
The bar is a great place to spend the afternoon and enjoy a great range of different beers on tap, with freakin' delicious and freshly cooked lunch served directly to your table.
For the international traveller, I highly recommend giving the brewery a visit, even if it's just to add something fresh and enjoyable to your list of activities.

Great restaurant food, loved my Eggs Benedict & bacon.
I thought brewery tour was a little overpriced considering we can't climb the tower. Suggest $20-$22 rather than $25. Glad it included an excellent cider and Tui beer glass.... awesome for summer smoothies !.

We went in for a lunch and the food was disappointing. Our fries was half cooked ($10), the pulled pork pizza ($25) was probably worse than a supermarket frozen pizza. Hardly any toppings with a flat base and swimming in bbq sauce. One of the worst pizza I ever had. The only good thing was the beer we tried that's why I give three stars. Without the beer is only one star.
Large park with rose gardens, BBQs, aviaries & a paddling pool, plus a cafe & miniature railway.
I love the esplanade.
It’s the best to run the kids out of energy, grab a little ice cream, let them splash in the paddling pool, and check out some gorgeous roses too. We often walk the tracks, and find or drop some “palmy rocks”
The little train is a family favourite for the kids. My only gripe is toilets are pretty far spread out for the littles, but there is still plenty sprinkled around.

Te Manawa is a cultural center that has been open since 1971, combining a museum and art gallery to create an immersive experience. The venue offers contemporary exhibits that showcase the intersection of science, history, and art. With a strong focus on Maori culture and social history, visitors can learn about native animals, wetlands and enjoy interactive displays about the Manawatu River. The gallery features rotating exhibits while children can enjoy an interactive play area.
We had been there Saturday, but are not had 1/2 hour to view, so we went back Sunday.

The museum looks deceptively small from the front, but is cleverly designed where one room leads to another, and so on, so it's kind of "long". Of course, like many museums elsewhere where the nation is divided, to some extent, between an original indigenous population and European colonisers, the museums are organised from a certain dominant perspective, history of the nation is seen from a certain skewed lens. Having said that, this museum by itself was fascinating, because the country itself is. More than its people it's the flora and fauna that attracts attention, and here the museum has done an excellent job! As an extra bonus we managed to catch a fab show of the celebrated Maori artist Sandy Adsett.

Liz gave a very informative and interactive tour for us. It was a great experience as we've never been to an alpaca farm before. We got to feed and pet the alpacas while understanding quite an extensive history on the cute animal, normally confused with its relative, llama. It's a recommended place to go.

The Alpaca Place is great. Deserves so much more than the 3 google stars. See Trip advisor for a good idea of the sort of experience you will have. Its a fantastic tour. We have gone on to do business with the wonderful women from The Alpaca Place and now own our own Alpaca. We've been very impressed with the service from being straight out tourists, through to potential buyers, and onto a full delivery service of our purchased alpaca which took a full day of their time at a very reasonable price.

$25 for the animals, $30 if you include the glow worm cave. A fantastic experience, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and it's a great chance to see native NZ owls up close. Absolutely worth the visit!

An 11 out 0f 10 experience! a must if you are ever in or passing Shannon. The glow worms are awesome and fascinating. Ross and his staff have really out done themselves A+

Exceeded expectations. I expected a small place but there was enough to do and see to occupy a few hours. Good variety of animals and perfect for families with young children

It was way too expensive for what it has to offer. The guide tour is short and shows only plants and a few owls.
The picnic area was nice. There's a pony, peacocks and guinea pigs.

We are new to this area so going to owlcatraz was such a great experience was a little different to most animal attraction getting greating by staff but all in all was really good tour guides were fantastic great for the children as my nephew loved the fact he could fead the animals 👍

Fantastic place with plenty to see. All the animals are friendly including the eels. Staff are amazing and do the group tours professionally and are amazing with the children.
Certainly recommend the guided tour, even with children. It is great value for money.

Amazing, friendly staff. Janette and her staff offer a fantastic opportunity of a life time which is to be able to walk through the Ruru (Morepork) enclosure with nothing between you and the magnificent birds. The Farm yard friends are so cute. Thanks again 🙂

Awesome place. Great feel to it. Couple running it knowledgeable and friendly. Do not expect original Stonehenge but this is set up for NZ. Must do if in area. Will be looking out for events o line.

An educational and immersing experience. Was able to learn about the origin and importance of Stonehenge together with the Zodiac signs. The building itself is quite mystical. Good thing we visited when it was not busy as I am not much of a sociable person and I dislike the crowd.
AME 43 — Google review
Travelling solo, paid $15 to enter. I expected a walk down away from buildings, maybe in the middle of a paddock BUT it's a garden display in their backyard!!!
Yes it has cool qualities and makes sounds echo and is built to specifics measurements etc but at the price paid to enter is simply disappointing.
Maybe if it was $10 they would attract better ratings and more visitors.
Was also some horrible thing on the ground surrounded by mesh fencing, inside the circle, showing the zodiacs totally taking away from the ambiance even more then the buildings etc.... lost a star for whatever that was

What an amazing piece of astrological magic this is. It is breathtaking. We managed to get our large motorhome up the drive without hassle. The friendly lady at reception even allowed us to take our small dog with, thank you for being so thoughtful.

$15 per adult, $10 seniors, $5 school aged kids. Kids under 5 are free.
Video (12 mins) good info, unfortunately due to a flickering lightbulb I couldn't watch the whole thing (migraine trigger).
Stonehenge itself is a peaceful spot for a picnic; fun to clap, sing and play and listen to the echo of the stones. When we visited there were others around, your group could talk in different areas near the edge of the stones and not hear the others conversations. A unique and special space.
Could do with a bit of a mow, but understand it's only a couple people working at the moment and manning the shop/front desk means not able to mow too.

Great experience for new knowledge. Lots of information. Friendly staff. Hard to find the entrance as the street to enter looked like a private property. Entrance and exit is 1 way street only.

We were staying in the area and were researching for attractions to visit. Really glad to have come across this place.
Upon arrival, you watch a short 15-minute looping video that explains the origins of the henge and those involved with building it with such precision. Make sure you stand on the floor circle and clap or make a suitable noise.
It was well worth the entry fee. I would recommend visiting anyone able to.

Good tourist attraction with interesting information in how Stonehenge Aotearoa was set up, the night sky, and the interesting acoustics. It would be good to visit it during a solstice or an equinox.
Thank you, Richard and Kay.

It would be interesting if you were really into this type of thing. It probably would be better on a sunny day so you can see shadows from the sun.
At $15 a head, it is a little costly for someone like me who is not a buff but I do understand that a lot of expense would have gone into creating the Stonehenge itself.
Anita Phillips — Google review
The stone henge was really beautiful - loved the sounds and views. Video in the theatre was very informative - but the Māori pronunciation was a little piss poor. Do appreciate the effort though. Mixed feelings about this as the lady whom was at the counter was a little rude and disinterested. Took away from the enjoyment my kids and I were expecting. Maybe having an off day. Worth a 20min to. 30min visit - longer if astrology etc interests xxx

An excellent facility, with so much for kids of all ages.
A train ride on weekends. All sorts of play equipment, a great flying fox, an obstacle course, excellent toilets, and an indoor dining/kitchen area offering boiling water, a microwave and sink.
My 8 year old played happily for over an hour!

Great facilities. Great play ground. Not the first time I had been there. Great location too with good parking. Last time there, I ran in to some young people scaring a couple of elderly people who were there to use the lavatory
I need to pick up after themselves in the dog area. In fact it was disappointing and disgusting and I couldn’t bear to let my dog stay in their for longer than I did.

This park is great and 1 of the best I have been to over NZ. Caters for all ages and great to see a swing for wheelchairs and catering for the not as mobile children. And is kept well maintained and clean. Clean toilets and has change areas for children. 👍 to the council for a great park for everyone. More councils need parks like this.

It's awesome, you can see that this Park is the reason so many of the newer parks, have what they do.
It's like the Parent playground.
Lots to do.

A really great park! Has lots of facilities that caters for all. It's got a dog exercise area for the four-legged. The playground has different segments and each caters to a difference age group.
It even has an indoor picnic area (an indoor room for people to stop and have a meal) which contains a microwave to hest your food!
Bathrooms are great too, as it caters for families. There's a family bathroom that has a baby change table.
No wonder we always stop by this park whenever we drive past Levin!

The biggest public playground we have ever seen!!! 😍
The highlight for me was the colorful rainbow-themed equipment which added a fun and cheerful touch to the entire area.
The playground was well-maintained and had a variety of equipment suitable for children of different ages. even it has a workout area for adults and a dog's playground too.
Overall, I would highly recommend this playground to anyone looking for a fun and inclusive activity. It's a great spot for families and friends to spend some quality time together in a vibrant and playful environment.

Sadly I have never been into the park with or as a child but I do look at with envy. It looks like kids would have a fantastic time there.
What I can confirm is that the toilets are always clean & have a feeling of safety & that is why I stop at this park, when on my travels.
There is plenty of parking & lovely gardens. Everything is maintained to a high level. If you have a dog there is also a small area to let your dog off for a toilet break. I really appreciate this space offering facilities for everyone & how clean it is.

Amazing playground that we stopped off at on the way to Auckland. There’s a dog park, picnic tables, shade and sunny areas. There are different areas for smaller as well as bigger kids. If you read ‘adventure park’ you might think there’s a fee ->> it’s a free, public playground! Yeah! Definitively recommend!
Sabine Plugers — Google review
Awesome park for both kids and adults. So many different options. Best park and playground in Levin. The adventure park has multiple playgrounds, basketball court, beach volleyball, slides, flying fox, spider web, multiple swinging sets, big kids playground and little kids playground, wooden train, skate park, sandpit, disability/wheelchair swing and even a little train that you can ride for free on sunny days. Theres public toilets and a room to eat and relax in. Oh and theres a dog rest area and play course! This park has everything. Would recommend.
Beautiful winery, lunch option is a platter with lots of yummy bits and pieces to share for two people. More than enough food, especially if you add on the bread. Must book as it gets busy. Wine tasting is also great, $10 a person and redeemable if you buy a bottle of wine - which you will want to do! P

This place was great and very helpful servers. They welcomed a bigger group for a tasting and we didn't feel like we had to have food which is fantastic. Cannot comment on menu as didn't eat. The room here everyone was gathered was super cute and has a nice rustic vibe. Top marks.

I visited Poppies Winery on a quiet winter's Tuesday with a friend and her family. We initially planned to visit another place, wanting something more than a platter. However, Poppies was the only winery open. While they mainly serve platters, we found them to be more substantial than expected. The service was decent, and their rosé caught our attention. A good stop if you're in the area.

If you are in Martinborough, Poppies is a must visit. I have visited quite a few times and I love it every time. The platter is always delicious. Such a great variety of tastes and compliments the wines very well. The wine tasting is also a good option so you can taste their different wines and then get a bottle to have with your platter.
The seating area is perfect - you have indoor seating if the weather isn’t so good and then a nice outdoor area with umbrellas on a sunny day. Also they are dog friendly!
Definitely one of my favourite wineries in Martinborough!
Amanda Chan — Google review
The most beautiful vineyard I have ever been to. The building is rustic and gives a warm happy atmosphere when trying the 5 carefully selected wines. Our somalier (young and french) was awesome and even encouraged us to try and additional wine based on our tastes in the backroom and she was so right! We ended up purchasing that wine because of how great it was. The mushroom pate (vegan!) Was showstopping and genuinely thought of returning the next day to have it again! Over all this is the best wine tasting I attended in Martinborough and the wine is amazing!
Laura Bornemann — Google review
Really don't think this place needs another review since it is wildly popular. Gorgeous view dining by the vineyards. Delicious platter. The only thing I felt was not great was the Potato Gratin in the platter. This was like chewing on cardboard. All of us had a bite and didn't finish that. But everything else was delicious.

Excellent place for a wine and the platter. The platter is excellent with a range of tasty treats. The desert or sweet is equally wonderful.

A perrenial favourite, the wine of course, the food platter are devine, the service and atmosphere of sitting and eating over looking the vineyards is a lovely way to spend Sunday. Well done Poppy and Shayne, you’ve built an amazing business.

Poppies winery in Martinborough, New Zealand, is an absolute gem and a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. If you only have time for one winery in the region, this is the one to choose without a doubt.
From the moment you arrive, the staff at Poppies exude warmth and hospitality, making you feel like a valued guest. Their passion for wine and dedication to providing exceptional experiences shines through in every interaction.
The setting at Poppies is simply stunning, with picturesque vineyards surrounding the winery, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. Whether you choose to sit indoors or out on the terrace, you'll be treated to breathtaking views and a sense of tranquility.
One of the highlights of visiting Poppies is indulging in their exquisite platters. Each platter is a work of art, featuring locally sourced ingredients expertly paired with their delicious wines. The attention to detail and quality of the offerings truly elevate the tasting experience to new heights.
And speaking of wines, the Gewürztraminer at Poppies is nothing short of spectacular. Bursting with aromatic flavors and perfectly balanced, it's a true standout and easily the best Gewürztraminer we've ever had the pleasure of tasting.
In summary, Poppies winery offers an unforgettable experience from start to finish. With amazing staff, a lovely atmosphere, stunning views, delectable platters, and exceptional wines like their Gewürztraminer, it's the epitome of excellence in Martinborough's wine scene.

If you haven't been to Poppies, you need to go!! It is beautiful, the wines (especially the pinot gris and late harvest) are so delicious and the tastings are always very professional. The platters ($60) are gourmet and compliment the wine well. Wine tasting - $10 and redeemable on wine purchases.

Staglands Wildlife Reserve & Café is an open-air animal farm and petting zoo that offers visitors the opportunity to interact with wildlife in a natural environment. The reserve features tractor rides, feeding areas, and a rustic log cafe for refreshments. It's an ideal outing for adults and children alike. While exploring the park, guests can choose to stay on the walking path or venture down by the stream where they can cross over a wooden log or suspension bridge.
This place is an absolute sanctuary! We went as a group of young adults and had a magical experience. The animals are very friendly and you can pat A LOT of them! They all seemed happy and healthy. Would recommend buying the animal feed for the most animal interaction. We went early on a Saturday before it got busy which was nice as we didn’t have to wait for anything. A really lovely escape from the city.
Alice Nixon — Google review
Such a great outing for both adults and kids. I’d recommend buying a bag of animal food, we didn’t and regretted it.
The park is nicely sized, not too small but also not too big. You can stay on the walking path or you can walk down by the beautiful stream and cross it over a wooden log. Above it is a pretty cool suspension bridge.
The cafe was fine, not the best food or coffee but it did the trick. Service was kind and relatively quick even though it was a busy day, and employees were very kind.

Absolutely brilliant family experience. So beautifully set out, so much for the kids to see and do plus animals and birds to interact with. Added bonus, as a coeliac, was delighted to find such a great range of safe, gluten free food. I am used to making do with a coffee while watching everyone else eat at these kinds of places so am really impressed and would highly recommend.
Stephanie, Ross McKellar — Google review
Staglands is a place to visit if you have toddlers who are really into animals, as they can feed the animals there with the feeds you buy at the ticket office. It was an intimate experience with the animals as you can feed and pat most of them up close!
Unfortunately we didn't get to ride the tractor ride and eat the marshmallows as it wasn't available when we were there. But we had a good picnic outside their cafe and our toddlers enjoyed it thoroughly! They knocked out in the car on the way down the windy road.

Staglands is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Greater Wellington Region. It is a quaint farm themed Wildlife Reserve located in Upper Hutt’s Akatarawa Valley. It is a very exciting environment sure to be loved by the young children. The animals are quite friendly, some can be too friendly and over excited about the food you can give to the animals. The animal food and trout food costs extra. I’ve been going there a very long time, and have never been disappointed. I do think however that there should be more staff around to keep an eye on some of the guests who get too excited around animals, or have little knowledge on how to behave around animals, especially families with little children. The cafe is excellent and the food is very yummy, it can take a while for the food to come out however. As long as you behave around the animals and don’t lose your head around them, your more than welcome, and are sure to have a great time!

What an amazing place even in the pouring rain! The animal, fish and bird life are a delight. So well thought out and beautifully set out around numerous ponds, waterfalls and the river running through the property.

Awesome place to visit with kids and family.
Import notes:
- drive to and from can be quite tight.
- can be a wait for the cafe for food
- wear comfortable shoes as there is loose gravel and inclines
- tractor runs 11am-2pm in 15 minutes intervals,
- Buy feeding food.
Free roaming miniature pigs running around the front, Awesome for kids to touch and feed

We had such a lovely time there! Our 3 year old son absolutely loved feeding and interacting with the animals and learning about new animals that he hasn't seen before. Very pleasant path through the park. Kids loved feeding and interacting with the animals. The cafe was honestly delicious and wasn’t crazy expensive. I’d come back just for lunch. We’ve been to a number of wildlife parks around the world and the deer area here with dozens of peacocks up and down the hill was completely unique.
Tim Krug — Google review
Beautiful animal park in a lovely bush setting. Lots of birds with free roaming peacocks, pheasants and chickens, often with babies. Lots of enclosures and aviaries you can go into to get up close and personal with the wildlife. The cockatoo is very friendly and will say hello, the kea are also friendly but more so on days where it's not so busy. The birds especially seem very well cared for. There are also kunekune and other pigs. They had tiny piglets when we were there, who weren't afraid to be stroked if you were slow and quiet with them. The Guinea pigs were naturally skittish, but cute. There is space to sit in their enclosure, if you're quiet and have food, they'll come to you after a while.
I was a little concerned for the cattle and horses - the young Galloway and two Highlands had rather small enclosures, along with the Clydesdale and small pony. Great for the public to access them but not healthy for such large animals who should have been in paddocks.
There is a Cafe there which we didn't visit. You can by small bags of food pellets for the animals, but we took a large bag of carrots for the big animals and some peanuts in shells for the birds, and the animals loved them. We probably spent about the same amount as we would have on their bagged pellets, but got far better value buying the fresh food. The animals aren't interested in you if you don't have food.
Its a great place for families, but there are quite a few hazards with the river and ponds (never mind the animals!) so children need to be well supervised.
Leah Cameron — Google review
Exceptional! This place is incredible! Great drive out through dense bush and running streams. The picturesque idealic setting was mesmerizing. The park is well kept and immaculately presented. Cafe was great and served up good coffee and beef stew. Our two young kids had a ball of a time, so much to see and explore. The tractor ride was a nice and fun addition. We picked the perfect day to visit, bluebird day with little to no wind. If anything they could do with some outdoor gas heaters around the outside Cafe which would top it off as the place got cold when the sun went over the hills in the afternoon. The cafe spacing does overflow to the outside arrangment when busy which did make it a cold wait for our meal outside. Otherwise an awesome place which I totally recommend.

Great place to get in touch with animals, we had a great time here, and we were lucky to be here in Spring with all the Baby goats and lamb!
The only downside was the wifi login page was difficult to use due to its colouring and the receptionist was a bit grumpy 🤣

What an awesome beautiful place to have in Wellington to take kids, it was really nice to walk around and see all different farm animals they have and all the birds as well. The trout was cool to see so up close swimming around, they also have a awesome horse here. The Tractor ride was great ride it added some fun for the kids. also think the price of getting in is very fair, I know some people think it’s bit high but think how much it must cost look after all the animals here, the cafe here has very friendly staff that gives very good service, food is good and they sell beer and wine.

Fabulous, took our grandsons and they loved it. Animals in excellent conditions all well looked after, loved every part of it. The old town was great. The food was very good and well priced. Really felt we got great value for money. Doesn't have a shop, which is a good thing.
Mark Hay — Google review
A fun time for the little ones. It's well maintained, and generally clean. A pretty place for a stroll, and the tracker rides are a bonus. However some of the animals look like they could use some extra love. It's also very expensive for entry, and on a busy day you're limited to one food bag (which can be a pickle with multiple young kids).
Mixed bag, but we tend to go once or twice a year.

A great place in the middle of nowhere. You wouldn’t find even a small shop anywhere near the place.
It’s a good place especially for the kids to come and watch the birds and animals in the wild life reserve.
The best thing is that we can go touch and feed the animals like deer, sheep, peacock and other birds.
A great place to pack food and snacks and have a small picnic with friends and family.

My daughter had a lovely birthday party at Staglands over the weekend- super easy with the party food, loot bags, entry, and animal food all included in the package (plus the guests all got free admission passes to visit again). The kids loved the animals, especially Jock the horse, the friendly little calf, and the extra cuddly sheep in the deer enclosure. It was raining, but there was still plenty of fun to be had! The tractor ride was a highlight. The staff were great, and all the party guests had a wonderful time. Such a beautiful reserve. Highly recommend for kids parties.

The Southward Car Museum is home to a vast collection of vintage cars and motorcycles, including Bugattis, Bentleys, and other notable vehicles. Due to the pandemic, there were fewer visitors when I went, which allowed me to explore at my leisure. The museum staff were friendly and helpful. While the selection of food at the cafe was limited due to low foot traffic, there are still plenty of treasures to be discovered in the basement and throughout the three-hour visit recommended for a comprehensive experience.
Pretty much had the place to myself thanks mostly to the pandemic. Massive selection of vintage cars and bikes displayed. Recommend allowing a go couple of hours as so much to take in. Was disappointed with selection of food on offer at the café but probably due to lack of foot traffic. Staff were very friendly and helpful ✅ also don’t forget to check out the vehicles down in the basement…

Best museum of vintage cars, motorcycles, boats, and Aircrafts. We enjoyed the place very well. We went through the history of vehicles. Every item is described very well on their description boards. If there are minors, it will be a good experience for them. And there is a waiting lounge, toilet, and cafes with snacks and coffee. And wide parking space. And there is an entry fee. This is an amazing display of vintage cars, motorbikes, and other memorabilia. I have been to the Mercedes and Porsche car museums in Stuttgart, and this is equally as good as those. You will easily spend a couple of hours meandering through the perfectly presented displays admiring the cars of your youth. If you're old enough, you may even spot your first few cars. I can't wait to go again, three floors are too much to cover properly in one visit. It's just simply a fantastic venue, a must to go and see. You might be surprised by what else they do to.

When travelling from Wellington to Picton on the water you’ll love the old school style and convenience of the MV Kaitaki. This is a roll-on/roll-off ferry built in 1995.
It has a great covered in viewing area and good bar with plenty of PowerPoints for working on your lap top.
A simple but well prepared menu and super well trained staff make this a really enjoyable trip. Relax and enjoy.

Easy boarding with a vehicle to head to the South Island . Staff are exceptionally trained , very efficient & friendly.
The ferry departed on time and arrived at the Picton terminal precisely on schedule .
Amenities and restaurants were clean throughout the vessel . Seating ample & very comfortable.
I spent a fair bit of the trip on the upper viewing deck & thoroughly enjoyed the pristine sights along this remarkable trip.
Highly recommended for great service & reasonably priced value .

The sailing and booking system is good. Ive marked down 2 stars as I paid extra for the Queen Elizabeth lounge which was so not worth it - an absolute ripoff actually.
There is no TV, and only 2-3 power points for charging a phone which were all being used.
The lack of TV, I reasoned, was because the lounge is touted as a quiet place however it was anything but. The door squeaked really badly every time someone came or left (constant) and it's positioned right beside the cafe so there was no relief from banging coffee grinds and listening to food and coffee orders being called out.
The only positive to this room is that you can recline the chairs a little bit.
Save your money and sit in the public area or spend less and chill out in the movie theater.
Had I not wasted money on the lounge I probably would have rated the experience 5 star as the food options are good, staff are lovely, and the process of taking a vehicle on board was seemless due to good staff and signage.

Everything was great until the moment a cruise staff decided to close the blinds before 9pm!! Would have enjoyed the rest of the trip looking through the windows as we were doing. Most of the people had the same surprised look on their faces "what the heck?!"
Leave the blinds open please!!

Awesome if you travel with kids! Large playground and they give you free kids bags (color book, pencils, etc). Our kids enjoyed it a lot! Quite a delay with arrival, but it’s all understandable.

My journey this evening on the 6:30pm Interislander Ferry (Kaiarahi) from Picton to Wellington was nothing short of exceptional, and it's worth highlighting the outstanding service provided by the three young male staff members managing the premium lounge on Level 8.
From the moment I stepped into the premium lounge, their attentiveness and dedication to customer service were immediately apparent. Their warm greetings and genuine enthusiasm set a positive tone for the entire journey. Throughout the trip, they went above and beyond to ensure that every passenger in the premium lounge felt not only comfortable but also valued.
What stood out the most was their proactive approach to anticipating passenger needs. Whether it was offering refreshments, providing information about the journey, or simply checking in to ensure everyone was content, they demonstrated a level of professionalism and courtesy that exceeded my expectations. Their attention to detail truly elevated the overall travel experience.
It's noteworthy that, despite having had consistently incredible experiences with Interislander in the past, this particular interaction with the staff on Level 8 was unparalleled. Their commitment to excellence reflects positively on Interislander as a whole.
I wholeheartedly commend these three individuals for their exceptional service. They are a testament to the high standards that Interislander upholds. For anyone considering a journey between Picton and Wellington, I can confidently say that the premium lounge experience, thanks to these remarkable staff members, is well worth it. This recent trip reaffirmed my trust in Interislander and left me with fond memories of a comfortable and enjoyable ferry journey.

Could be world class but NZR have invested very little into this port and terminal infrastructure for 30 to 40 years. Rumour is after many years of study they may relocate this terminal next to the private competitor BlueBridge Ferry ⛴️ services. The coffee shop at the old terminal is good 👍 and its staff are very helpful plus friendly.

It is pricy but on a good day you get spectacular views on the sands. People and staff was friendly and professional. You wait a little between check-in and being loaded on the ship. Don’t come too early, if you are there by check-in time or a little before it is absolutely fine.
Relax and enjoy. I was surprised that prices for e.g. coffee on board were rather reasonable.
Ferry was on time and everything went smooth - we can recommend it.

Fairly big terminal until a mass of people fills it! Definitely a good idea to come a bit earlier to get a place to sit or to get your spot in line to get on the ferry if you are interested in snagging a good seat for the ride if you aren't in a lounge. Lots of food options on board. We did end up in a lounge and they served us breakfast and lunch. The only unfortunate thing was that nothing was labelled and as vegans it was tough for us to figure out what we could eat. Staff were super nice though. Some nice views along the way.

One of the most significant and popular museums in New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa has a vast and varied collection covering everything from natural history to Maori culture. With permanent exhibitions that can be enjoyed by all, as well as changing exhibitions that are always worth checking out, there is sure to something for everyone at this fantastic museum.

Wow just wow. The states could learn a thing or two about how a museum should present itself to the people. The exhibition was amazing. The interactiveness for children were plentiful. Kids and adults will learn so much from this place. Parking was a breeze and the staff was super friendly. They do offer early admission which we bought. It’s worth it to get there before the mob. Just a fun place to spend a morning.

What a fantastic museum. We took over 2.5 hours just to cover 2 floors and will have to return to see the rest. The interactive sections were really interesting and, coming from a country that doesn't suffer from much ground movement, we particularly liked the 'earthquake house.' A great experience all round. Thank you Wellington.

We visited the Gallipoli war museum part. The self directed tour was very well organised, easy to follow and displayed pieces were amazingly realistic
The war commentary part of every displayed piece was very well done and made the whole experience very touching and informative. We were glad to have visited and thoroughly enjoyed the displays

Super interactive and fun museum both for adults and kids. Lots of interesting facts and info to learn about made in an easy to learn way.
A lot of nature, history, heritage and values about what makes NZ of today and it’s a MUST-Go I think if you are in Wellington to get to know a bit about the country you are visiting.
Entrance is free for the permanent exhibitions, and that took us a couple hours already which was more than enough to see.
Only a certain special exhibitions are paid.

Took the kids(4-12yrs) there for a trip during the holidays. They were very engaged with all of the exhibits and we ended up staying longer then expected.
Lots of changes since we last visited so always new and interesting things to explore. Some sections were closed off with new exhibits being installed, but still plenty there to keep you intrigued.
As always the ANZAC exhibit is phenomenal and well worth it!!!

I was only able to see the nature exhibition, unfortunately.
Great for kids. Activities throughout the exhibition.
It is one of the best nature exhibitions I have seen. Colossal squid on show, which was a highlight.
Great way to spend a few hours.
Good gift store with local arts and crafts.

I've been several times before, but on this trip there was an exhibition on Gallipoli. Done in collaboration with Weta Studios, this is one of the most captivating exhibitions I've experienced. I spent an hour and left only because the museum was closing. The (seriously) larger than life displays were creative perfection, and the story of the campaign, in which the Aussies and Kiwis bravely sacrificed so much, was educational and compelling. I can't recommend this highly enough. Note: Entrance is free, but they gratefully accept donations, which you can give with cash or card.

What an absolutely phenomenal experience. The museum is completely free to visit, you just have to pay for parking. It only cost me $10 for 3 hours. But there is probably free parking in town, you would just have to walk over. The museum is very accommodating. It has accessibility and normal toilets, parents rooms, kids play rooms, lockers, money machines, cafes, a souvenir store, stairs and lifts. The museum itself is just incredible. With 6 entire floors to explore you could literally spend days here. It also has such a huge variety of exhibits that accommodates to all ages. My favourite floor was the animals and nature. From games for kids to dinosaurs, giants squids and an earthquake room... it was just such an amazing experience. I would highly recommend a visit.

I recently visited this museum with my family and was thoroughly impressed by my experience. The museum had a wonderful collection of artifacts and exhibits that were both informative and engaging. The displays were well-curated and offered a fascinating glimpse into various aspects of history and culture.
One thing that stood out to me was the attention to detail in the exhibits. Each item was carefully labeled and explained, which made it easy to understand the significance and context of each artifact. The staff was also incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, providing additional information and answering any questions I had.
The museum was also very well-maintained and clean, which added to the overall experience. There are 4 floors, and the layout was easy to navigate. There were plenty of interactive exhibits that kept me engaged throughout my visit.
Overall, I would highly recommend Te papa to anyone interested in history, art, or culture. It's a great place to learn something new and gain a deeper appreciation for the world around us

Great a lively museum with a delicious cafe/restaurant and gift shop with a wide variety of merchandise and souvenirs (bronze and gold kiwis are the best souvenirs and gifts for a great price). The museum has 2 special exhibitions going on right now. The first is the Dinosaurs on Patagonia, which displays European-found skeletons in perfect condition. Its main attraction is the giant sauropod, which looms over the entire room tickets are purchasable via the website (quickest and easiest way), or in the museum (lines are about 10-20 minutes). The second exhibition is the highly popular and Wellington exclusive Gallipoli: The Scale of our war, which displays giant, realistic statues of important people from World War 1. Other exhibitions include the Wildlife area of the museum, which displays the first and only fully-preserved giant squid. The cafe is a long wait, which lines that take up to 20-45 minutes. Would definitely recommend going as this is a key tourist destination when visiting Wellington.

Simply one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. You get alot for free admission so it was definitely amazing. The WW1 exhibition was truly eye opening with the realistic pieces that were displayed. There was heaps on information to keep you busy which made this section all the more interesting.
Another section involved nature and contained lots of different animals/insects and their variants. It was super cool seeing the whole aray of moths big and small (although I highly dislike them)
I'd highly recommend visiting this museum as it's fun, interesting and educational.

We explored Te Papa around 13 years ago and have been wanting to bring our children here because it was amazing then. It is still an absolutely awesome place to visit. The displays are informative and interesting. They are appropriate to our country and our unique history, so it's easy to immerse yourself in it all.
We did this over 2 days just so we could make sure we explored every part of it. We finished with the ngahere/bush walk that's connected to the museum too. Definitely recommend a visit.

55 Cable Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand
Mount Victoria, a prominent hill rising 196 metres above sea level, can be found just east of central Wellington in New Zealand. The hill is connected to Mount Albert by a ridge and features residential areas on its north-western slopes. On the other hand, in southern Chin State lies Myanmar's third highest peak at 10,016ft - Mt Victoria.
Wellington Cable Car provides panoramic city views and a history museum from the Kelburn Lookout. The cable car operates every 10 minutes every day of the week.
Great experience. We just went one way up & enjoyed the great view over Wellington & then walked back down through the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Well worth it, it's a must see attraction!! Well priced & affordable. Go on, do it, I would be surprised if you did not like it.

Just another ride...
We were thrilled about the ride in the Cable car. It's cool to know that this Cable car has been around for 120 years, an icon of Wellington City. It is really a ride on an antique but I'm sure there were many refurbishment and maintenance.
We weren't sure the timing so we were pretty late when we started our ride and we just miss the museum by 4 minutes. They closed at 5pm. But we were able to catch some activities at the Space Place at Carter Observatory (Science museum) and saw some cool stuffs. A 150 years old telescope is really the main highlight for our trip up the hill. Unfortunately, to be able to see the beautiful night sky, we have to prepare to walk down the hill as the Cable car cease its operation at 7pm. And the journey down hill can be very challenging for some. It gets very cold in the night in Wellington.
I must state that the view on the top of the hill is picturesque. This is really a worthwhile one trip of a lifetime kind of thing and I don't think I will ride the Cable car again.

The cable car ride is an absolute must if you're in Wellington, even if only for the afternoon. Two trams go up and down all day which means there's only ever 5 minute wait at either end. The views, the art murals but mostly the LED lit tunnels make this a unique experience. Trams are immaculately presented with retro charm in wood floors and vinyl seats. Our drivers were approachable, chatty and friendly. Botanical gardens, a planetarium and a cafè all provide bonus extras at the summit.

WOW , we took the cable car to the top and could not believe that this is in the heart of the city. The views are spectacular, it takes about 5 mins to get to the top but there are other options for getting off at two stops along the way and exploring. There is a gorgeous cafe at the top where we had a delightful breakfast. Also up there is the Cable Car history museum which tells you all about it and well worth a visit. Go on get in there and try it yourself

The cable car was a blast! We paid only for the ride up — a 6-minute ride offering stunning views of the city, and at the top we enjoyed exploring the well-done small museum. There is a cafe at the top with great views as well. Some people buy return tickets, but we were very happy we chose to walk back to the CBD through the botanical garden and cemetery. It was definitely worth the price of the ticket and it was fun!

You can get a ticket at counter or take one way ticket and on return from top can buy ticket in cable car, visited on 31/12, it was open on New Year’s Eve and public holidays. It’s a short ride up to the museum on top. It’s better to sit at front of car for nice photos. The Wellington Botanic Garden is an impressive and popular park that's home to a variety of exotic plant life. The gardens can be visited via the Wellington Cable Car, and offer stunning views of the city skyline.
Stunning gardens and nature trails to explore. The garden varies with sights for everyone to enjoy. There are ground level paths through roses and other flora along with more elevated paths. Some are well-manicured and others are a little more rugged but all make for a pleasant walk. There are plenty of benches for taking a break. Keep your eyes peeled for some birds too!

After reaching the peak at the Kelbourn Station by Wellington Cable Car, the only way to go is ls down. Our party of 4 is glad that instead of riding the cable car for a return trip, the alternative option is much better, that is, to enjoy a slow walk through the winding paths of the Wellington Botanic Garden.
From an elevation of 125 m, or lower down the slope, we can see the breathtaking panaromic views of the city and harbour in the distance.
There are shady paths, and open fields. There are big native exotic trees, ferns and colourful displays of flowers.
It is just a sensational.

I didn't have a plan other than there was a specific piece of art I wanted to see here. And as it turned out, it was a real challenge to get from the cable car station to see it. So I did a lot of wandering through the Botanic Garden. Up hills, down hills, through narrow passages, and this all gave me a fabulous self-directed tour.
Lots of beautiful trees and flowers. Several artworks. And an enjoyable hour of making sure I could get back to the cable car before it closed.

Great for a stroll around. Marvellous tree specimens with some clear explanation boards giving details on the trees. Flowers coming into bloom when we visited, so the overall colour was improving . As others have commented, there are some steep paths, and the directions/signposts to move around the garden aren't too clear.
The cafe was busy but coped with the guests and there was no waiting for a table.

What s beautiful garden. I've never been somewhere with suck a well kept botanical garden. There is a large square with probably close to 100 roses and a greenhouse with many different plants I've never seen before. The park itself is well shaded for a stroll with your family and has multiple loops with different types of trees and flowers. My favorite part was the peace flame which is a memorial fountain near the roses.

Cable car is a must to do list for botanic garden. Get on from Lambton quay to the top of the botanic garden. A lot of different walk ways inside. There is a cafe in rose garden. Good to have a coffee and enjoy the beautiful gardens.

Amazing, walk around and enjoy the lovely views. Take the cable car up and down, or walk down. $11 ASD so around £6 for a return trip.

Lovely day out with family exploring the gardens. Highly recommend coming up here via the cable car. Lots of plants to see and a great little food store near the roses. It was very busy at 11am. Prepare for lots of walking.

Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne is a conservation-focused wildlife sanctuary located in the heart of Auckland. It's home to numerous native bird species and New Zealand's only living tuatara. The reserve also boasts 32 kilometers of walking trails, a museum, and many educational opportunities for visitors.
Awesome tramping paths. Fantastic wildlife and they are not shy to show off for a few pictures. We'll worth the trip out there.
The request for a donation at counter whilst purchasing access tickets is off putting, as we are all affected by the Pandemic. In fact sites like these should actually consider lowering ticket prices for locals to make it accessible thereby helping them stay afloat.

Was a great day walking around . We took our time looking around . Took about four hours.
Will go back.
Cable car on gold card then free bus to Zealandia and back to cable car.
Staff were amazing .

This is a must if travelling to Wellington. They provide free shuttle bus from top of cable car. It is a great spot to relax, listen to birds, search for a kiwi. They provide a map and you can explore the many tracks. The dam wall is worth a visit. So many birds.

Loved Zealandia. The Takahe for me was the definite highlight. The walking was easy although there's a few challenging sections but the trails are well explained. I wish I had enough time to do the night tour! Maybe next time. The only sour part of our experience was the beginning at the welcome desk. As soon as we paid she turned around without much of explanation. We thought perhaps she was getting us a map but a quick run down of what the attractions are, what we could do, and the bag check area process would have been helpful. Other than that, we were very pleased with our experience. We look forward to going back again sometime in the future.

Beautiful place. Honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as we did! Surrounded by birdsong, great little mini-talks scheduled throughout the day (thanks Kathy!), good hiking trails and lots to see - $24 for admission is very reasonable 👌
Top tip: The Twilight and night tours were booked out when we tried to book, so book in advance if you want to see kiwi about at night!

What an amazing spot! We loved the hike, even in the winter weather—and saw so many bird friends. And a reptile!
Our family went on the electric boat ride. That guide was knowledgeable and helpful in understanding the complexities of running this place!!
I would highly recommend a visit. Had we been there in time we’d have taken a guided tour. As it was, we felt lucky to see what we did and what a respite from conventional sight seeing! If I were a local I’d be there every week, for sure.
Thanks for what you’re doing in providing sanctuary for these lovely friends. Keep up the good work.

We did the day tour at Zealandia and had the best time! We saw some amazing birds and our guide was fantastic. I would highly recommend booking the day tour and the night tour. We only booked the day tour and wished we did the night tour as well. The night tour books out in advance. So plan ahead so you don’t miss out!! I was told there is about 150 kiwi at Zealandia. It would have been amazing to see/hear them at the night tour.

Our young family went on a Zealandia by day guided tour and LOVED it. Kids are 11,9,8 and 7 and the walk was not too difficult or long for them. Our guide was incredible, kind and full of knowledge, she answered all questions and made it engaging for everyone in the group from our kids, to the seniors. We liked the group size (10-12 people). We walked for just over 2 hours (started early due to everyone arriving early). Highly recommend - will return if in Wellington again, but might look at walking without a guide to see a different track.

There's quite a lot to see here, even if it is just taking the time to listen and be quiet while waiting for the birds to come to you. Really calm and peaceful and on a nice day there is a lot of green and blue to be seen. I really enjoyed my visit and would say this is a must-do for any nature lover in Wellington.

A little pricey but worth visiting. Lots of easy walks and some harder trails for the fitter folk. The view from the dam (with the winds) is quite breathtaking. The cafe isn’t very impressive food-wise but a pretty good gift shop and rather accessibility-friendly activity for the day.
We spent 2-2.5hours here, possibly would’ve been longer if we weren’t on a schedule.

With it’s ingenious fencing, this very much feels like a scaled down version of Jurassic Park. And I loved it. It’s a beautiful spot, teeming with native birds. It’s a haven away from the busy metropolis of Wellington CBD.
Excellent thought out walk ways and informatics around the park. I was able to spot a few of the famous residents 😊

Zelandia was an awesome time. We got there early for our tour and enjoyed the café upstairs. After that, our tour guide, Julia let us on an amazing voyage, that we could not believe was in the middle of the city. Very jealous I don’t have anything like this where I live. Everyone must definitely check it out if they come through Wellington.

What a magical place! We saw so many different birds, and just listening to them sing was wonderful. The walking path immerses you into the forest so you're surrounded by the bird calls. We went in winter and it was still incredibly lush and active. We skipped the guided tour and were still able to identify almost every bird on our map. Highly recommend! The cafe and gift store are lovely too.

Really good, where you can see all of the bird life, bar the kiwi (nocturnal), during day light hours. Quite late on we decided to do the tour. Totally worth it, Grant was knowledgeable and charming. Amazing he is a volunteer only!

Such a lovely place to visit, especially on a nice sunny day. Take your time walking around and stop to spot the birdlife. The Tuatara reptiles are definitely worth searching for.
But choose your day; if the weather's windy, grey and cold then maybe some other time! Note: this in no way is a zoo, so there's no guarantee you'll see everything or possibly anything (but that's unlikely). Enjoy!

Visiting Zealandia was a highlight of my month-long visit to Aotearoa NZ. Beautiful bushland ringing with bird calls. Lots of walks of different levels of difficulty/accessibility. Birds everywhere. Appreciated the free shuttle bus from the top of the cable car.

Beautiful walk. It’s nice to see birds living peacefully and freely without any cage. The walk could take up to 2hrs or more depends on your route. Bring a camera that can capture close-up.
It gets cold around bushier areas, bring a jacket just in case. There is flat walks for everyone, just stick to the main road. I do prefer the higher uphill route because there are more birds. Keep silent so you can observe more birds.
Otheriwse nice place for a walk, lil recreation. Buy the pass if you live in wellington. Its worth going all the time .

Even if you aren’t a twitcher it’s a stunning place for a walk with the sound of so many birds calling all around you. If you are into birds it’s fantastic - you get a sheet showing the native species to look out for if you don’t go on a guided walk and I saw a lot in a couple of hours. The free shuttle from town is also great.

Visited here as a shore excursion on 19.11.2023 when i was doing a 10 night cruise to New Zealand. All I can say is that i wish i had travelled by plane and that i was staying at a hotel nearby so that i could spend from open of business til close of business of Zealandia Te Mara a Tane! The place was amazing, lush, clean and beautiful with so much bird life (wild bird life that could come and go as they pleased!) I really loved this place and i ended up spending a fair bit in the souvenir shop at the end. It was very educational and we had a private tour guide, who was very knowledgeable and very welcoming. I would highly recommend this place to visit and i can't wait to go back here again!

Zealandia quickly became one of my favourite places in NZ. If I would live in Wellington, would visit every other weekend for sure. Went there for the night walk, saw the tiny kiwi and a bunch of glowworms, then the guide just said we could come back the next day for free, which was the best decision of our long weekend Welly trip.

This is an incredible place to visit. A guide has the knowledge and shares it with you. Knows where to look for birds or small critters. It houses within its walls 40,000 species that are found no where else on earth. This includes various trees and plants. The goal is to make the contents from New Zealand only. They brought the Takeha bird back from the brink of extinction. The gift shop had a T-shirt I decided to buy, and was shocked to see a $55 U. S. on my receipt. They were not clearly marked. So I went from 5 stars to 4.

A real highlight of our trip to New Zealand and so cool to see wildlife in a predator free environment on the mainland that doesn’t involve them being in cages. We went on the guided tour and the guide was excellent. If you’re doing a night tour to see the Kiwi I would definitely recommend doing a day tour too.

If you love nature and birds, then you're in for a treat. Zealandia is the place to go for a day trip.
The main path is an easy(flat) walking path(wheelchair accessible) that leads to a larger open area for sitting by the benches and hearing birds call out to each other, if an easy day is on the list.
If you are more into hiking, then there are steeper paths that take you to more scenic spots throughout the sanctuary up and over the hills, across the suspension bridge and the dam.
I haven't heard as many varying bird calls as I have whilst visiting Zealandia. It almost felt like how nature feels in fantasy films. Even if you aren't a big outdoorsy person, this hidden gem is worth the visit.
The cafe is just above admissions. Private function times vary.

This is bird heaven. I was so happy here. It’s a literal oasis in the middle of the city that surrounds you with so much nature you forget where you are.
I could have spent the entire day here and wish I was local to become a member. It’s truly magical. I mean what’s better than being surrounded by bird song and beautiful foliage?
I will say I don’t know how little kid friendly this place is, and by little kid I mean under 3 or 4. Apart from walking around and looking at everything, there isn’t much for the little ones. School aged kids, especially if they’re into birds and nature, will love it, but might be a bit boring for the wee ones after the initial bird spotting.
The walking trails are all very well maintained, played out by difficulty which was very helpful, and we had no problems spotting all kinds of wildlife.
