How long is the drive from Franz Josef to Wanaka?
The direct drive from Franz Josef to Wanaka is 177 mi (285 km), and should have a drive time of 3 hrs 38 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Franz Josef to Wanaka, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Fox Glacier Guiding - Glacier Tours & Adventures and Fox Glacier, or the ever-popular Skydive Fox Glacier.
The top stops along the way from Franz Josef to Wanaka (with short detours) are Lake Wānaka, Fox Glacier Guiding - Glacier Tours & Adventures, and Hooker Valley track. Other popular stops include Wānaka, Blue Pools Track, and Lake Matheson Walk.
Skydive Fox Glacier offers an exhilarating experience for both novice and experienced skydivers. With professionally trained instructors, you can jump from 13,000 to 16,500 feet above the stunning landscape of Fox Glacier. The panoramic view includes snow-capped mountains, the majestic Mt Cook, the Fox Glacier, rainforest, and the ocean. It's been ranked as the second most scenic skydive in the world for a reason!
It's hard to put my experience with Skydive Fox Glacier into words, but I have a lot of them so will share. It was honestly the most exhilarating, beautiful and mind-blowing experience of my life - and I could not recommend it more highly.
This has been ranked as the second most scenic skydive IN THE WORLD, second only to Mt Everest haha! Once you're up in the plane admiring the view, you'll understand why. That said, one of our tandem instructors said he's jumped Everest few times and he actually prefers Fox - because you start at sea level here, you get to fly higher. Obviously Everest starts at a much higher altitude, which restricts the height at which you can jump from. That makes this (arguably) the best skydive in the world!!!
Everything was perfect from go to woe, but I'll break down in detail...
Starting with the booking process - I booked two skidives, one for me and one for my fiancé Ben, online. Communication with Sarah (who I later learned is one of the pilots!) was great from the get-go, and the website was easy to use. I actually changed my skydive day from Wednesday to Thursday about a week out, and this request was accommodated without complaint.
On the day of our jump, we were picked up by the Fox Glacier Skydive bus outside out accommodation in Franz Josef right on time. Our driver (and owner of the company) told us that we were about to embark on the most dangerous part of the day: driving from Franz Josef to Fox Glacier haha! An absolute skydiving expert, he provided some great insight on the drive. I was very reassured to learn that the owner of Fox Glacier Skydive actually heads up the board foe skydiving safety across NZ!! Rest assured you're in the safest possible hands jumping with these guys.
Once we arrived at the drop zone, we were giving a safety briefing and given the opportunity to purchase photo/video options. I would highly recommend the combo package! The photos and video you get are extremely high quality and a perfect way to remember your day.
The only slight downer on my day was the guy who was working reception when we arrived. I later learned he's also a pilot for the company, so maybe he was just upset to be on desk duty? He seemed extremely grumpy and like my questions were frustrating him. I will say he cheered up once the morning 'rush' checking everyone in was over.
The jump itself was PHENOMENAL!! We jumped from 13,000 feet, and the view from up there was honestly insane. We could see snowcapped mountains (in April, no less), Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, Fox Glacier river coming down through the rainforest and into the farmland, and then out into the ocean. Simply stunning.
My tandem buddy Nico was fantastic. I was quite nervous but he set my mind at ease, making it an extremely enjoyable experience. He even landed me ON MY FEET!! I got into the brace position but then as we came in to land he was like "Actually, just stand up," and I landed firmly on two feet. Incredible. I cannot thank him enough. Nico also produced an awesome video for me to remember the day with!!
Sorry for the long review, but I really want the world to know how great these guys are. We were blown away and could not provide a higher recommendation if we tried.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Do this jump. You can jump from 16,500 ft. You see snow capped mountains including Mt Cook, the highest peak in NZ. You see the fox glacier and the Fox River which it flows into. Rainforest. The ocean. And over a minute's free fall. Awesome, and well worth the money! Also, the crew there are fantastic.

These guys are legends. Don’t hesitate to book, extremely friendly guys that live for skydiving. Safety briefing was very good. Henrik my divemaster was a really nice and extremely professional guy! View excellent 😃

Incredible views from 16,500 ft and great staff! Wouldn't recommend the videos just because you don't get high quality and the video you get is one long clip which is quickly edited and can't really be messed around with afterwards. Pictures were ok. They take them with a GoPro hero 3.
Juan Villasenor — Google review
Really fun experience. The team is well organized and the process goes very fast. We decided to jump from the highest altitude (16,500 feet). In retrospect, the longer free fall isn't really necessary, but we were glad we did it for the spectacular views from the airplane. Overall really great experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Amazing experience. My second skydive in NZ. Specifically chose them for a higher jump. 16500ft! The jumpers are experienced and nice. They build rapport easily and comes from all parts of the world. Their pricing if u compare with other jump operators are actually much more value for money worth. MUST DO. and fox glacier is beautiful in every way!

OMG!!! This is the best skydive I've ever done. Went from 16,500 ft. So so worth it. Views of the glaciers and the southern alps are breathtaking. The instructors were really experienced and friendly; managed my nerves really well on the flight up! Cannot recommend this enough!!!

I bought a voucher from these guys for my boyfriend as a birthday present in December. The staff was very nice and helpful from day one emailing back and forward. Last week we have finally made it to Fox Glacier and booked the jump. Steve was blown away by the views and Skydive Fox Glacier really made the whole experience great and memorable. If you thinking of skydiving in New Zealand I would definitely recommend this company!
Fox Glacier Guiding offers year-round guided Heli Hikes and Ice Climbing on the West Coast's largest and less crowded glacier. The experience begins with a safety briefing and getting fitted out with equipment before taking a short but amazing helicopter flight to the glacier. Once there, visitors are greeted by knowledgeable guides who lead them on a 3-hour walk around the ice, teaching them how to put crampons on and providing an informative experience.
I’m speechless. Glacier hiking is the best thing I’ve done in NZ and I live here. If you are hesitant (like me) to spend big money on activities then this is where I’d bite the bullet and DO IT.
It is much cooler than sky diving.
You spend 2-3 hours on the ice. Passang was a fantastic and relaxed guide.

Absolutely phenomenal!!!
We did a heli-hike on Fox Glacier, and loved every second. All of the staff were incredibly helpful, and our guide on the glacier was Fiona. She was SUCH a wonderful guide, incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, taking us all over the glacier, providing context and facts along the way. We were on the glacier for 3 hours, but it went by so quick. The scenery was breathtaking, and it was honestly like being on another planet. The helicopter ride there and back was also incredibly fun, and all in all was worth every penny. It may seem quite expensive, but now I've done it, I would have paid double. If you are here, do yourself a favour and book. What an incredible experience!!!!

No words can really describe how amazing the Heli-hike trip was. Certainly not cheap but I would not hesitate to do it again. Only a few minutes up in the helicopter, I was nervous as never been in a helicopter before but it was no problem. Guides Jack and Reece were helpful and knowledgeable. Loved every minute of it

Definitely one of the most exceptional experiences I’ve had in New Zealand and in general.
I wasn’t sure before whether this tour would be worthwhile given the not-so-low budget price. But it was worth every cent!
Expect spectacular views, insights into glaciers, and some blue ice if you’re lucky! Our guide Kevin was very knowledgeable, attentive and kind, making sure all of us had a fantastic experience.
We got so lucky with the weather. Do plan enough time to wait for good weather in Fox, just to make sure you get to experience the flight and hike to the fullest!
Kat Klein — Google review
*Summary - if you only do one paid activity in NZ, a heli-hike to a glacier is it. However whilst ice time may be up to the advertised 3hrs, you should expect the actual hiking time to be a lot less.
*Long story -
Friendliness of staff and level of safety is top notch.
We were the first of the morning group to arrive onto the ice, then from there it took us another 45 minutes before we got moving (time waiting for second Heli, everyone to put on their crampons and go through safety again). The guide has to spend time cutting the ice to make it easier to walk on (understandable but again eats away into your hike time).
The 'hike' itself is easy but your time will be very dependent on other people in the group (some are slow walkers and some will strike 20 different poses for the camera before the whole group can move on). We had 9 in our morning group and a little disheartened to see that the 11.50am slot only had 2 people! Next time I would ask re group size to see if we could change slots (especially given that it is really quiet at the moment.) Or might be worthwhile upgrading to the other hike options if waiting on other people isn't your thing.
I did the Franz Josef hike 7 years ago and personally preferred it (felt it was more fun, faster paced) but things are likely to have changed by now. Whether you do Fox or Franz though you will be doing something crazily unique.
Spend a few more days in Fox/Franz and book your hike early on because your trip could be cancelled / rescheduled due to bad weather.

A once in a lifetime experience.
We got lucky with a break in the weather for our tour this morning and I'm so happy that we did.
The staff were brilliant and made sure we were safe at all times but went out of their way to show us all the cool features of the glacier.
Highly recommended doing this tour.

The tour are highly dependent on weather, cloud & mist at the mountains.
Initinally we booked on Saturday and then due to thick cloud our session got rescheduled.
We went for the 930am session. Started of with detailed safely briefings.
Jacket, boots, backpack are all provided.
We are then transported to a nearby helipad.
We hiked for almost 4hrs and have some great chances to visit different kind of glacier formation & even entered the crevasse.
Highly recommended for a once a lifetime tour 👍👍👍

A unique once-in-a-lifetime experience!
My wife and I did the 11.50 am heli-hike with our guide Flavia on Saturday 2 Sep 2023. What a day it turned out to be.
Sarah had been very helpful and courteous when we did the booking on phone. It was nice to meet her in person.
From checking onwards, everything went well and smooth- done in a friendly but professional way. They provide everything which is needed - socks, shoes, jackets, trousers…..even sunglasses!! Too good.
The weather God was kind too - it was actually warm on the glacier and we had bright sunshine all through.
It will certainly be one of the memorable days of my life. Thanks to the excellent team at Fox Glacier Guiding Company.
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone.
Shirish Paranjape — Google review
This was touch and go as the weather almost meant a cancellation.
There is a briefing after 15min of waiting then after about 25-30min you get on a bus. Some waiting to get on the helicopter too
But then wow wow wow, the ride up itself is amazing, you see the glacier appear through the clouds.
We spent 2.5h up on the glacier being shown around with a guide who was fabulous and who used his ice pick to make paths for us. Went into a small alcove and into a small crevice, also got to try a fresh stream of glacier water.
Rebecca — Google review
We had such a wonderful heli hike experience with these guys! Whilst the lack of tourism hasn't been great for the area, we were blessed as it meant we went on the tour with just the two of us 🎉 We arrived, checked in, watched some informative safety videos, got into our kit and made our way to the heli pad. From there we were taken on a 5 minute helicopter flight into the glacier where our guide/Sherpa, Passang (from Nepal), greeted us. He taught us how to put our crampons on and proceeded to take us on a 3 hour walk around the ice. It was breathtaking and he had no hesitation answering any of our questions.
If you're considering which company to go with for your tour, we couldn't recommend this experience highly enough!
Ruby K — Google review
The Heli-Hike was by far the best things we’ve done in New Zealand!
You’ll start by being checked in and then your group will be given a safety briefing and fitted out with your equipment before being transferred a short drive to the helicopter. That’s when the fun starts and you take a short but amazing flight to the Glacier.
All the staff we encountered (Jenna, Cam, Stretch, Moss) were great at their job and it was clear they love it! Moss, our guide was hilarious and made the experience even better!
The walk on the glacier was mind blowing, better than expected and worth every cent, we’d 100% do this experience again!! Do this, don’t second guess it!

An incredible experience of Heli Hike. The whole team are professional and caring. Our guide Flavia is amazing, she was really helpful and lots of explanations about the glacier.
Worth to do it in lifetime, great experience 👍🏻

A once in a lifetime experience!
If you are in the area, go for it.
Recommended to book in advance, cause it's very popular! Check the weather forecast before you book, cause you want to end up up there on a sunny day, rather than a hazy or foggy day.
Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses and cold weather gear.
No toilets up there of cause, so be prepared to take some toilet paper with you to have a sit down...with the most stunning views;)

One of the best tours we ever had in New Zealand. Flo, our guide, was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting facts about the Alpine with us. She was also highly skilled and took great care of us during our Heli-Climb experience. Even though it was our first attempt at it, we had lots of fun throughout, knowing that we are in great hands. Hillary also gave us great assurance prior to bookings and answered all our queries and questions. Her encouragement and assurance also put our worries aside to go for the Heli-climb experience. It was definitely a great decision made. Thank you so much Fox Galcier Guiding! Highly recommended 👍👍

Heli-hiking on Fox was an incredible experience: Fortunate to have near perfect conditions and the best possible guide. Cam was an exceptional tour guide, and as an ex-kayak guide, I can say he truly went above and beyond for us. He was fun and friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and able to convey scientific information concisely but in the most understood terminology. Give that guy a raise! Thanks Cam, and thanks team for providing an unforgettable experience.

This is one of the best experience throughout our NZ South Island trip. The weather for the day that we signed up was cloudy and we were unable to fly, and decided to extend our stay at Fox and rearrange our schedule so that we could get the best experience in the best weather. It was definitely worth it.
We were giving safety briefing, waterproof jackets, thick socks, boots, and a backpack for our own belongings. It’s best to carry light so my friends and I only brought along our winter jacket (which we didn’t use as we it was getting warmer as we hike), sunglasses (useful as the sunlight reflects on the glacier), gloves and hair tie. Also, the helicopter seat arrangement depends on your + your belonging’s weight, so you might get to sit at the front seat with the pilot if you are the lightest in the group. As we came in group of 3, I sat behind my 2 friends that got the front seat. Still happy I got to be in their heli selfie pic.
Our guide for that day was Cam. He was passionate with his job, and you could ask him anything, anything at all including his personal life 🤣 he said. Hence, it was fun and one of the participants asked if the glacier could be eaten and he knocked off some and gave to us to have a bite. We could tell he really loves his job, and we wished the glacier hike experience was longer so we could get to know more about the glacier.
All in all, this is a weather dependent activity and we had the best experience with the sunny day, earliest hiking slot, our glacier-passionate and handsome guide Cam.

Was initially booked to do the heli hike at Franz Josef but due to bad weather it got cancelled fortunately we managed to secure a booking at Fox Glacier Guiding. Did our trip in March and opted for a morning hike hoping the weather would hold up for us. Apparently 60% of trips get cancelled due to how quickly the weather changes. So even if you have a booking you may not get the chance to fly up for the heli hike.
We stayed at an Airbnb called The Pod with mountain views in Fox Glacier hosted by Kirsty which had the best sunset!
Our heli hike briefing kicked off at 0750HRS and was very well delivered by our super knowledgeable and professional guide Jake.
Hopped on the helicopter at 0830HRS. The flight up was quick and smooth in the morning. It was super thrilling with awesome views even for someone who is afraid of heights and flying in general; I felt very safe on the helicopter. Definitely a must do in NZ. Once in a lifetime experience not to be missed!
Spent about 3hours hiking on the glacier with Jake hacking away at the ice to help make the route friendlier. Jake was also passionately educating us about everything from A to Z about how the different ice formations are formed to how it has been retreating due to climate change.
All in all a 10/10 experience!

Sensational trip up to the glacier with a 3 hour long hike exploring various nooks and crannies on the glacier. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience to remember for a very long time. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The gear you get supplied with is in excellent condition and saves the headache of travelling with bulky cold weather gear. Thank you for an exceptional experience.

100% recommend the heli hiking tour. Our guide Ivar was friendly and knowledgeable. The team was professional and courteous. Weather can be unpredictable so it’s best to have flexibility in your schedule when booking.

Embarking on the Heli Hike with Fox Glacier Guiding was a true adventure, heightened by our fantastic guide, Kevin. His wealth of knowledge on the glacier, hiking, and climbing added depth to the experience. We even got hands-on, creating ice steps and anchoring in the glacier—an unforgettable touch.
The cherry on top was the fact that it was our very first helicopter flight, making the brief 5-minute ride to the top all the more special. The panoramic view of the glacier and valley is nothing short of breathtaking.
Luck was on our side as the trip wasn't canceled, despite prior days facing weather challenges. Do make sure to book tickets well in advance since the book tends to be fully booked in the touristic season.

The village of Fox Glacier is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, previously known as Weheka until the 1940s. The village is situated near to Fox Glacier / Te Moeka o Tuawe, one of two glaciers in the region alongside Franz Josef Glacier. Sadly, both glaciers have undergone significant retreat in recent times and are no longer safe for hiking due to unstable terminal faces.

Lake Matheson Walk is a scenic hiking trail that takes visitors on a gentle stroll through an ancient forest. The area boasts stunning views of Mt.Cook, also known as Aoraki, reflected in the lake. Along the way, there are several benches where hikers can take a break and enjoy the picturesque scenery. The trail is accessible for wheelchairs with some steep cambers along the route.
Planned to just walk to the first viewpoint then back, but it was so gorgeous we ended up doing the whole loop, which was absolutely worth it. Several benches with gorgeous views along the way, so I'd recommend bringing a picnic!

Beautiful walk, not very hard. We didn't get the majestic mountain view as it was cloudy.
The lake was peaceful and there was lots to see regardless. Very pretty boardwalks, moss, plants and lots of birds.
The visitor center/cafe/shop looked amazing and had some beautiful souvenirs, unfortunately we were slightly too late and they had just closed.

An incredible walk! We were very fortunate to be there on a clear winter morning. Well worth walking to the Reflection view point! Cafe is closed on Mondays.

Did the walk after our helicopter ride. It was quite cloudy when we started the walk. But overall it was also quite an easy walk. Not as nice as when it’s sunny but overall still a great place to visit. Very serene and relaxing.

i’ll rate this a 5 for the main reason that this is my favourite lake. Easy walk and everything is just picturesque. Note that its circuit path so just go with the loop

An easy walk, with great views. The reflection of the mountains (including aoraki) on the water is spectacular, and the photos from this spot can be found on postcards and in magazines. Definitely a must do. The walk to jetty point is reportedly wheelchair accessible. There were no stairs, so theoretically doable, but the ground has lots of little rocks and decent uphill segments that may make it a little difficult for some.

We did this walk on Mai 2023 on a super sunny day.
It is an easy walk, with great views.
The reflection of the mountains on the water is spectacular, and the photos from this spot can be found on postcards and in magazines. Definitely a must do.
You will find on your road 3 viewpoints - I would say 4 with the one that allows you to do a personalized postcard with Mount Cook and Mount Tasman
And at the end make a quick stop to the souvenirs boutique - you can find pretty nice things !

As I'm beyond my allotted three-score years and ten I was intending to walk only to the first Jetty Viewpoint, but I'm so glad I persevered and continued to the View of Views - it is definitely worth it! This is why I came to NZ in the first place; scenery like this. Outstanding.

A lovely walk,& wheel chair friendly although the camber on the track was a bit steep in places. Awesome views & birdlife.
Carol Gibson — Google review
I hope this helps others, I felt I couldn’t find this information else where so please upvote this to help others -
You’ve got about a 35% chance of seeing the awesome reflection in all its glory because of the rainfall in this area. You need a rain free and clear day. When the weather is good the place is super crowded.
Regardless - do the walk!! It’s a beautiful and easy walk, accessible until the jetty view point. The walk is through a forest that also keeps you safe from the rain, so after about 400m you are rain free, super nice and worth it!

Having explored the trails around Franz Josef, and caught a distant view of the receding Franz Josef glacier, my wife and I drove to the less-commercial setting of Fox Glacier. This town is actually in a more picturesque location than Franz Josef, and we headed out 6km to Lake Matheson to do an early morning walk that promised a view of Mt Cook/Aoraki. This was an incredible understatement - many of the Southern Alps peaks were on display in snow-covered glory, to the naked eye as well as reflected in Lake Matheson's waters. The circuit walk is an easy 4.4km, and along the way you can ascend to a platform aptly named "The View of Views" to observe the various mountain ranges, or descend to "Reflection Island Lookout" to take those mirror photos. At the end, there's a cafe if you're so inclined.
When you're finished, head another 4km down the road to the Glacier Viewpoint, a dedicated viewing area in the form of a Maori canoe (Waka), where Fox Glacier is easily seen seated amongst the Southern Alps. It is well worth the drive.
Peter Miles — Google review
Even though the low, gray clouds blocked our view of the glacier, this walk was worth the time. The path is wider than the Moraine Trail closer to Fox Glacier. There are many more flax plants. While still a rainforest, the trees and growth seemed less dense than the walks closer to the glacier.
Joe McCright — Google review
Great way to spend an afternoon. Easy shaded bush walk around a picturesque lake, with a cute cafe at the trailhead. Clouds descended upon the mountains so we didn't get the epic mirror image of Mt. Cook, but it's about the journey, not the destination, right?

One of our favourite walks from our time in New Zealand. The woodland is pleasant to walk through, even on a warm day, the scenery is beautiful, and there are so many birds (including a lot of Fantails).

Beautiful track through a lovely forest with many views of the lake. We went early in the morning and it was cloudy and drizzling with rain, so we had the place to ourselves. Unfortunately that also meant no views of the mountains. Still very beautiful though.

Fantastic walk trough the forest next to the lake. An easy 1 and a half hour loop of Lake Matheson and definitely worth it, take it slow if you need to, the views are worth it. A little wind can ruin the reflection so watch for that. Reflection island was for us the better spot for a reflection than view of views.

Worth the effort to walk all the way around the lake. Not for anyone with mobility issues though. Good trail, well signposted.

Amazing! Highly recommend , took two hours with stops. Very easy walk does have a bit of hills at time. I recommend finishing the walk before 9am to avoid the wind picking up over the water
The Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier View Track is a family-friendly alternative to the Hooker Valley Walk in Mt Cook. This walk offers stunning vistas of the Tasman Glacier and its ice-filled lake, making it a great option for those with children.
The Hooker Valley track in Mount Cook National Park is a 5-km walking trail that leads to Hooker Lake and provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Additionally, hikers can enjoy a beautiful drive by Lake Pukaki after completing the hike. The trail begins at White Horse Hill Campground and covers 10 km (6.2 miles) with an elevation gain of 80 meters (262 feet).
Its an awesome hike which almost everyone can do. It takes 3 hours total to complete the hike. The view is amazing throughout as you make your way through twist, turns and 3 suspension bridges. Make sure to apply your sunscreen as most of the walkway is not under shade. There are heaps of places where you can stop and click amazing pictures. There is one public toilet along the way which is i believe situated close to the end. I haven't hiked in a long time but still found the hike pretty easy.
The hike ends with you in front of the lake and majestic mount cook.

Great easy track! Does require some level of fitness, but great views of Mt Cook! Pretty wide trail that is well maintained. Be aware it does get pretty busy, there is essentially no shade on the track, and 2/3 days it is cloudy and you can't see the mountain. Beyond the second bridge/ near the bathrooms are great views of Mt Cook if you don't want to complete the entire track.
Marissa Morris — Google review
This is a must do trek in NZ and it's VERY busy because of that. Go early and offseason if you want more seclusion. Easy walk, views are unreal the whole way. I especially loved the bridge crossings, amazing experience. Very muddy and icy this time of year so hiking boots are recommended.

OMG this could be one of the most stunning places to visit in NZ. Breathtaking scenery and easily accessible. Definitely a place to have on your bucket list and then spend a night at the Hermitage to at some classy accommodation in such a special and unique location.

Brilliant walk for anyone with some level of fitness. Always plenty of people but worth doing it. The views are absolutely spectacular. Can be finished in 3 hours but you want to give at least half a day if you want to stop admire the views and take some good photos. Must do.

great views but quite rainy all the way, and rained started getting heavier on the way back. we went yesterday and the bridge is closed today because of the weather. the trail is pretty easy and quite flat, but as it was rainy, there were many puddles and the track was quite muddy and a bit slippery. the summit view of the lake was very pretty, and there was some ice even though it is summer. we took around 3 hours including return to complete the track, excluding some time spent on the summit taking pictures etc.
overall: very good, but the weather was quite unpleasant, but that’s no fault of the track

Wow, whatever time of year you visit, it's always breathtaking. It's a great track for all ages and abilities. There are 3 swing bridges that might take a bit of a deep breath to cross but they are very sturdy and safe. Take layers as the weather can change very quickly.

Really beautiful walk and very well maintained trail, some sensational views in the first few km
Quite a busy trail, but not crowded in June
When you eventually arrive at the lake the silence is broken by people constantly trying to launch the biggest rock they can through the frozen lake.
Bit sad we can't just enjoy the natural beauty without feeling the need to smash things

Such a beautiful walk. I was there back in May so the sky was very grey with an overcast so the ground was a little muddy nut no problem if you have hiking shoes. There are views along the journey which is nice if you like to take short breaks otherwise wait til the end for an amazing lake.

No wonder this is one of the most popular walking tracks in NZ! It's fairly easy, roundtrip took us less than 3h, including a few small stops. The views are gorgeous, of course. We weren't very lucky with the weather - Mt Cook was nearly entirely hidden by clouds/fog, but the hike was very enjoyable nonetheless. Quite busy, too. Would suggest going there very early morning to avoid the crowds

Oh my goodness!!!!! Stunning walk. We started at about 2 pm and it really wasn’t super busy. There were people but not a problem. Walk is not too difficult for the average person. My husband has a walking disability but he completed it slowly. He was determined to do so. 3 incredible swinging bridges, a mixture of boardwalks, gravel walks, steps and small inclines. In total it took us 3 hours and that is allowing my husbands disability. It was very windy so be prepared for that. sometimes the gusts of wind are extremely strong, especially over the bridges.
Stunning views, all the way, and if you are lucky to have a clear Day, like we did, Mount Cook will be very visible. We were even fortunate enough to witness an avalanche on the mountain. Once you reach the end at the lake, you’ll be amazed by it. We saw icebergs in the water. A truly magical walk.
By the way, there is actually a toilet halfway along the track.

The highlight of coming all the way to Mount Cook. Get here early, peak times are 11-2. I hear the evening light is beautiful too. It's an easy hike but in the heat is rather long, and feels busy amongst the throng of tourists

Not too difficult a walk if you take it easy. The views of Mt. Cook are breathtaking and the lake you come to at the end of the walk takes you by surprise. You round a corner to see icebergs floating in front of you. Really enjoyed it!

easy trail for most people. not suitable for push or wheel chairs. great scenery. it's approx 10km in total it took us 2.5 hrs walking time. take a picnic for the end so you can sit and admire the glacier. there are 3 swing bridges. we were passed by 1200 people on our way in and out so a well used trail.

The best short walk in NZ! 10km return will take you around 3 hours return to walk it. If you are not up to the full 10km I highly recommend going to just past the second swing bridge. Just past the second bridge you will see awesome views of MT Cook and there is also a toilet and picnic tables there for a sit down. Great walk. Track gets a little busy so go mid week or perhaps off peak if you don’t like crowds.

The whole way to here was so beautiful, it was a great drive. The track is not hard at all, can be finished in 3 hrs. The lake was not completely frozen that day, but it was still fun. I was really stunned by the magnificent landscape here.

Good workout. Great views along the track. Best to visit before 9am as it gets really crowded after.
Bring snacks and water and have a picnic at the glacier view point!

Excellent winter walk! Lots of snow and ice, and the sky was crystal clear. The roads had been cleared to the car park, but still bring snow chains in case they hadn't been.
Be warned in winter - the snow gets compacted, so can be really slippy (especially on the stairs and inclines) so wear appropriate shoes (not trainers!!!) and maybe bring hiking poles for extra support. The weather can change super quickly, so layers are important, a torch and also keep to the path (even if the snow hides it a bit). Toilets at the start are usable but not pleasant - there are more toilets about half way to the lake.

Absolutely stunning walk! Not a difficult track, 3-4 hours. We went in July and there was snow on the ground but easy as underfoot. It was a mostly clear day, few patches of fog along the way up so be prepared for mixed temperatures. Beautiful views along the way, mountains, lakes, board walks, bridges. It's a great trip out for any age.

3 hour return hike. No need for special equipment or footwear (mostly gravel). Really busy on Sunday afternoon - but Monday was a lot quieter. No shade, would recommend a hat and sunscreen. Toilets available at the start and middle of the hike. Limited seating available at the end. Beautiful scenery the whole journey. Recommend packing water and some snacks.

This is the best trail I’ve ever done. 360 degree views throughout the trail. Mostly flat 10+ km walk with rewarding views and amazing three suspension bridges which makes you so satisfied and the lake in the end that elevates your overall experience. This will be one trail that I won’t mind doing again and again. Must visit for all the fitness levels.
Plenty of parking and well maintained restrooms with tap in the beginning and portable toilet midway.
Akash Yeleswarapu — Google review
For me, this was the nicest trail that I have walked at New Zealand. Full of different landscapes, beautiful views and few water objects to pass by on the way, this is really a beautiful walk that I believe that even children manage.
There are flashing toilets at the starting point with running water, and dry toilets somewhere in the middle of the hike, if there is a need to use them.
Don't get discouraged by a light rain, for example, you can still do it.

Amazing view of mount cook, it’s suited for all fitness levels.
We went on an afternoon walk in early March, weather was amazing. It was about 10km return, and we took about 2 hours as we did a small jog the first part of the trail.
The trail is well maintained and easy to walk.
The suspension bridges were a great experience with unblocked views of the flowing river and the mountain. A must visit!

Easy trail that will take between 2 - 3 hours. Mostly flat with a couple of swingbridges to cross. The views along the entire trail are beautiful with mountains on both sites. This is probably one of the most popular trails in the country and as such I'd really recommend starting the trail as early as possible to avoid the crowds.
Despite there being a huge car park; by the time we returned from the trail people were having to park on the road leading up to the car park.
Would highly recommend completing this trail as the views really can't be beaten and you're fairly likely to hear the sound of avalanches in the mountains and if you're lucky enough you'll be able to see them!
There's also the final location of the trail, the front of the glacier lake. During spring large chunks of ice can be seen throughout the lake and it's a very unique spot to be able to reach with such a relatively simple walk.

Finally had the chance to go and really enjoyed the trek. Plenty of amazing views and quite relaxing apart from the slightly sore legs. Parking wasn't too difficult but the restroom lines were fairly long. Very happy we did this hike.

The hike itself was just incredible, it is very hard to describe the feeling, it is just so impressive. If you are on the South Island this is a must visit. The hike in itself is mostly flat and quite easy, about 5km to the end and then you go back the same way. It does get hot if it is sunny so bring sunscreen or covering clothes as you are very exposed.
Just driving here also allows for some amazing views with plenty of scenic lookout points. Simply an incredible experience

Absolute gorgeous.
But as we are not use to doing long treks, my ankle aches during night even though i had a pair of trekking shoes. No complaints however. It was just worth the time and effort.

Beautiful walk to base of Mount Cook. On the walk you pass such amazing scenery. The walk includes many different types of underfoot terrains, grass, small and larger stones, stairs, wooden elevayed walkways, and cross 3 bridges. There are toilets in the car park at the start of the track and also toilets about two-thirds of the way to Mount Cook. There are several points on the way to stop, rest, and take in the awesome views. We were lucky to see icebergs in the lake at base of Mount Cook. It does get much colder there and there were two areas where there were some brief rain and snow flurries. I would take a waterproof jacket just in case. It took us 3 hours to go there spend some time and return, and the bridges are still only open set times on each day. I totally recommend this breathtaking trail.
D Sundance — Google review
This is a magnificent place which gives a great view of the New Zealand’s highest mountain, the Mount Cook and the glacier on the mountain range.
It is a 3 hour walk to back and forth. The trail is not too difficult but long, windy and so hot to walk. It is best if you can protect your self from the sun and the dust during the summer time. You will hardly find any shades on the trail.
There are three hanging bridges to cross and even an elderly person can walk on them as they are pretty secure and has hand rails.
Once you reach to the valley you can see amazing view of the mountain range and the glaciers. There are big rocks which have shades. You can sit relax and eat some food by the rocks.
There are toilets at the car park and at about middle of the trail. The parking is quite busy and you may have to park on the road before the car park.
We have not found any restaurants around this area.

Hooker Valley Track, Mt Cook National Park 7999, New Zealand
The Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre is a must-visit destination, especially on a rainy day. It's more than just a visitor centre; it's like a museum and art gallery combined. The center showcases captivating Maori carvings, local artwork, and exhibitions that delve into the flora, fauna, and geography of the national park. The building itself is an attraction with its large picture window offering stunning views of Mount Aoraki.
Fascinating and informative stop after a stay at White Horse DOC camp. So much for adults and kids alike to learn about. Incredible photos, and beautifully laid out. So glad we stopped by!

Very nice visitors center/museum. The staff was really helpful and gave good advice. The museum has enough things going on to be there for multiple hours. Everything is free to enter so this is definitely a place worth visiting if you got the time!

The park is amazing, very beautiful views good tracks and places where tonleave the car but there is a problem: the time (how long it will take to pass the track) that is written on the boards is not really correct because it was written that track "sealy tarns" will take about 3 hours to get to the view point and back but it took us around 4 and a half hours and I would not recommend u to go on that track if u have any even little afraidness of heights because the higher u get the more open this track becomes so it can be very hard, but the park itself is very beautiful especially when there are no clouds

A beautiful design of the building, with an amazing garden at the back of the centre. A wonderful experience at the centre .

And $25 to see the Hillary museum-you’ve got to be joking.
Avoid and look for coffee/food/history etc elsewhere.

I did the Red Tarns walk-brilliant views and quite steep so not busy.

Great place to learn about the history and mythology of the area. There really is something for everyone: NZ's mountaineering history, geology, animal and plant exhibits, photography and artworks, rescue operations... plus a gift shop. Spent ages just in the little room where the photo is from. Definitely got my value for money ($0 entry but donations are accepted!)

Very informative place, talks about the history of the region and wildlife that lives around it, recommend dropping by if you happen to be around the area. Admission is free.
This is a museum dedicated to the life and achievements of Sir Edmund Hillary.
This is situated inside the Hermitage hotel, however is open for all visitors.
Lots of information and personal artifacts from Sir's life are well kept and preserved here.
A large life sized status of Sir looking at Mount Cook is an interesting and nicely curated artifact.
It is another hidden gem in the area and seeming not very popular with the tourists.
However it is a nice and highly recommended place.
The location is really scenic and one can find variety of landscapes depending on the season of visit.

I had wanted to go here for years. It wasn’t what I expected, I was thinking bigger and just about Sir Hillary’s hiking expeditions. The museum was in the Hermitage Hotel. It was informative about Sir Hillary and other adventurers and half about the Hermitage Hotel and some cars that first got there in 1906. You walk in the door and can see the whole centre but can read through the displays in half an hour. There was a movie playing, I think about Sir Hillary I didn’t see any information. But it sounded interesting.
There is different movies in a planetarium type room that made the $20 with it. You enter through the Hotel gift shop and buy your tickets there. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Awesome museum and while some may complain about the size I think it’s about right. The entry price includes viewing for all movies including dome and good value for money in my humble opinion. A good history of the local characters, although Tenzing Norgay gets short shrift yet again in the history told here on the displays just like everywhere else - this guy carried Edmund Hillary’s stuff up Everest and yet the other guy gets most of the credit!

During our visit today at 9:00 am, the lady working as a cashier provided us with unclear information and was extremely impatient when we tried to clarify if there was any chance to reschedule our glacier explore tour. Her behavior was very rude and unprofessional towards us as customers. We were disappointed with the level of customer service we received from her.

Awful wrap. love the scenery, but when i'm out in the cold for hours and my feet are wet, I needed a good solid wrap. Unfortunately this did not deliver, the feta to wrap ratio was entirely off ( literally an entire block's worth) and none of it tasted fresh. soggy wrap with feta and the occasional leaf If I was lucky.
actually went to glenorchy the next weeks days and had a better wrap there, 10/10 for that one.

The museum was pretty basic tbh although I liked the movie about the 1st Everest climb by Sir Edmund Hillary. I would have liked to see original climbing gear, more explanation about the Hillary Step or how they trained before going to the Himalayas here in Mt Cook. In short, it’s pretty pricey for the content but worth spending an hour or two if the weather is bad outside.

The female cashier, who we suspect may be named Johanna, was extremely rude and her behavior was unacceptable. It seemed like she may have been discriminatory towards us based on our race. She definitely needs further training in customer service, as her behavior left a bad impression on us. It's hard to imagine how she can effectively train others if she can't treat customers with basic respect. For instance, when we asked for a pen to write some postcards, she flat-out refused us. However, we were able to get a pen from another staff member after she left. Overall, our experience with this cashier was disappointing and we hope the management takes steps to improve her customer service.

Small and not uninteresting museum (20 minute visit) but the price of admission is too high. It should be free for people staying overnight or a donation, maybe $5 or $10 but not $25 - you can get into the Louvre for that.

Had high hopes for this place and was excited to visit and learn about one of our national icons. Well, I was very disappointed!! The $65 cost for 2 adults and a child was much too expensive. Maybe tourists are happy to pay this but IMO this is a rip-off, keep the cost down!! The museum itself was fairly basic and we covered most things off in 20 minutes. The movies would be ok if you were staying in hotel and had time to watch these, we were only there for a day visit so only watched part of one movie. Gutted that my hard earned $65 went to such a wasteful experience and even more gutted that this is how we showcase one of our treasures and to top it off, we'll charge you a lot of money for the experience!! if my poor experience can save others from the same pain, then all is not lost.

Glacier Explorers offers the only glacial boat tour in New Zealand, allowing visitors to explore the Haupapa/Tasman Glacier Lake in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The glacier is the longest in New Zealand, stretching over 23km and reaching a depth of 600m.
An excellent and awesome boat tour operated by a team of dedicated guides. Can't get any better than this, you get up close and personal with the iceberg that broke off from the glacier itself. Anyone who is visiting Mt Cook have to go check this out.
The team is very professional and knowledgeable. Our boat captain was even funny and fun.
There is however an element of luck involved, the weather needs to cooperate and the icebergs need to be safe enough to approach. So please don't blame the team if you can't get an up close encounter..
On top of that excellent boat tour, you get a nice easy hike with a view from the parking lot to the boat jetty.

This was the coolest experience on our trip! You hike to the Tasman Lake, get into a boat, and boat around the glacier and ice bergs. The hike requires some level of fitness, but it is totally worth it! We had Bethany and Sam who were both very friendly and informative. You can taste the glacial ice and feel the water. Unlike any other experience I've had!

A great but wet and windy experience…and grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more about the mighty Tasman glacier and see it up close from the lake. Initially our trip was postponed due to poor weather conditions. Fortunately we had some flexibility with our travel plans and were able to go 2 days later. The tour began with a 10 min bus ride to the Tasman lake during which a guide gave a briefing session and some of the highlights of the national park. This was followed by a short 20 min walk to the lake which may prove to be challenging for the very young, elderly or mobility challenged participants. Once we arrived at the shoreline we were provided with safety instructions and then divided into smaller groups of 8. Our guide and boat driver Kate provided great insight about the shrinking Tasman glacier as she skilfully navigated the boat around the lake in what was very windy conditions. Even though we brought our wet weather gear we still got wet/ for those considering going on the glacier boat ride do pack in full wet weather gear if you don’t want to get cold and wet. Due to the time of the year the lake was a chalky white from all the churning rock flour. I hoped we might see the ice calving but sadly it was not to be. But we did see a few icebergs of various sizes scattered across the lake. Overall it was a good experience.

This is a "MUST DO" activity when visiting Mt. Cook. We had family visiting from India and decided to take them on this excursion/activity. The guides take you out on a boat and you get to touch bits of icebergs, which have broken off the Tasman Glacier, which is over 18,000 years old. This is a wonderful activity, not one to be missed. It exceeded our expectations!!!! Wonderful commentary by our guide also, gave us insight into what this part of N.Z. was like during the last ice age!!

Took the glacier boat tour today. Not a lot of large icebergs to see at the moment, which was a bummer but nothing can be done about that. Saying that, the tour was still very informative, it was neat to be able to touch the icebergs and riding in a small boat was pretty fun. I was on the first tour of the day, so there was lots of free space where I got to have a whole row to myself in the boat. Overall, it was a pretty neat experience.
Something I’d caution about is to keep all valuables on you or leave it behind in your accommodations. The tour offers a locker for safekeeping your belongings, but it’s a common locker shared by all guests. (Which means other guests on the tour have the opportunity to access your belongings.) When I came back to pick up my bag after the tour, I found it open like as if someone went through it. Luckily nothing was missing (whew!) and there was no cash in the bag, so I didn’t feel the need to raise a stink in front of everyone. I’m just glad I had the fortitude to keep all important documents/credit cards on me during the tour. But still, that was pretty disconcerting.

Our tour was cancelled due to inclement weather, understandable. But what was quite frustrating as they advised us we could go do the walk to see the glacier, which we did at the same time our tour would be departing and arrived to beautiful blue skies and no wind so it is unclear on why our tour was cancelled due to the weather. When our tour was cancelled they said there was no absolutely no possibility of us being fit into a later tour. I was down at the desk just before the next tour left buying stamps to overhear them fitting 3 extra people who had not booked a tour at all that day and had to quickly pay 2 minutes before the tour left, onto the later tour after us being told there was absolutely no way they could fit any extra people on the later tour.

Despite grey weather, Dylan, Toby and staff are incredibly knowledgeable, the trip was mind opening, made us love our earth more when we held that huge piece of glacial ice in our hands ! Worth the price. Do bring your own poncho and raingear as they only provide life jackets. Also not too good for elderly who walks with aids because we had to trek one 1km gravel road with some steep section to the pier.

This was a great tour to get on the boat and go close to the face of the glacier. The tour guides were friendly and informative. The tour length was just right - any longer and it might have been a bit much. The boats are quite powerful but you do get a bit of splash. We went on a hot sunny day and it was nice on the water. My concerns around the boat being barely bigger than a Weetbix box were unwarranted as it didn't feel like we would repeat the Titanic even when we nudged an iceberg.
The hike from the carpark is ok, on the way back it's a bit of a drag. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone going here.

I recently had the opportunity to take a helicopter tour with the company that offers Mount Cook glacier landing and I must say, it was an incredible experience. I was able to book the tour at the last minute and the company was very accommodating. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and made me feel at ease throughout the whole process.
The helicopter was in excellent condition and I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth and quiet the ride was. The views were breathtaking and I was able to capture some amazing photos of the glaciers and mountains. The pilot was also very skilled and made sure to fly over some of the most beautiful and unique features of the area.
The Mount Cook glacier landing was the highlight of the tour for me. I was able to step out of the helicopter and stand on the glacier, which was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

We did the Heli-Hike on the Tasman Glacier and it was wonderful. I've never flown in a Helicopter or walked on a glacier/been in a ice cave so for me it was definitely worth it. You'll fly about 20 minutes in total with the helicopter to and from the glacier and you still get some beautiful scenic views if. About 2 hours on the glacier and at the end we got to go in a really big ice cave which was the by far the highlight of the trip. Would recommend this above one of the scenic flights. The guide was fantastic made us all very comfortable and kept an eye on everyone.

An amazing and great experience! The helicopter pilot was very good. The people on the ground (eg reception, check-in team) seemed a bit more unorganized.
But once you got up in the air, the views of the glaciers were spectacular. Definitely a must-do. We did the 50-55 minute one, which included landing at the top. Pretty surreal experience!

What an awesome thing to do when staying at The Hermitage. Less than 20 min drive, or they can pick you up. All staff very friendly and professional. The scenic flight with Alpine landing was amazing. Our pilot Mike was the best.

An awesome experience and once in a lifetime trip made all the more memorable with Sam the pilot and the customer service team. Highly recommend coming here if you want to experience a first class trip and a knowledgeable pilot on the 3 highest mountains in NZ. Definitely one of the top highlights of our South Island trip.

What a great experience. Defiantly a must for Mount Cook. Very good pilot and staff and of course our “co pilot” too. I could not propose to my partner in a better way. Will defiantly book again.

Our Tasman Heli Hike was amazing. The guides were so helpful and informative.
The helicopter rides in and out were breathtaking and the pilot Dan was telling us about what we could see in the valley.
The ice cave was something else!
Cannot recommend enough! It’s the best way to see Mount Cook for sure!

Guide Emma and front desk receptionist Christie were very friendly. A big thank you to Emma for offering to take photos. The pilot displayed smooth flying skills, making everyone feel at ease. The glacier's scenery is truly breathtaking. One of the most unforgettable journeys.

If the weather is partly cloudy or clear and not too windy, you really can't go wrong booking this heli flight. Seems like a lot of people book a day or two in advance and switch times to make sure their flight is confirmed (minimum 4 people). We had PERFECT weather and could see for miles and miles. Mountains, glaciers, gemstone-colored glacial lakes, braided rivers, and lots of snow! It was glorious. With that said, you, of course, don't get to pick where you sit on the helicopter as seats are assigned due to body weight. If at all possible, you want to be in a seat on the left side of the heli (opposite the pilot) at a window on the first leg of the 55 min flight for the best views. As a photographer, it was a bit disappointing to be stuck in the middle for most of the flight. We switched after our glacier landing but the views weren't as exciting on the second leg of the trip. Otherwise, it was a great trip and our pilot and everyone at The Helicopter Line was very kind and helpful. We loved the experience so much, we had hoped to book a heli hike with them the following day but they were booked up.

What an awesome team. From booking our flight through to an amazing trip with views to die for and our friendly, informative pilot, Josh, made it very special for us.
Totally recommend The Helicopter Line.

Amazing experience flying with the helicopter line.
Had a 10-min show landing and a fly through the mountain range.
Dan, our pilot talked about the landscape with detailed.
It was memorable tour with the aerial view.
Highly recommended! If you stay at the Glentanner park, you will also get a 10% discount.

Absolutely recommend. Guide Scott was extremely knowledgeable and very easy to get along with, an absolute legend. Pilot Gilly was a highly competent pilot, gave great information and also was very approachable. And it doesn’t end there, Hazel at reception, was such a refreshing and polite representative of the company, The Helicopter Line should be very proud. My entire family thoroughly enjoyed this experience, don’t miss it 🙌
Really nice beach. The best place to see Fiordland Crested Penguins (Tawaki). Very good sightings at sunrise and just before sunset. Only recommendation is to come prepared for sand flies.
Jose Carrillo — Google review
Not a fantastic beach unless you like sandflies or you're fortunately enough to be there when the penguins are not out at sea, but worth visiting for the amazing trek along the rainforest path that leads to the beach, including the bouncy bridge! Allow 45 minutes each way for the walk.
Adrian Walter — Google review
Nice bush walk to a stoney Beach ,good scenery, chance of seeing fiordland crested peguins, I didnt
Robert Martin — Google review
A must do activity if you travel Haast - Fox Glacier or visa versa. The walk through the magic forest is very pleasant and you might spot special birds. The beach is beautiful with spectacular rocks and some months (July- November) you can see pinguïns.
Peter Kok — Google review
This hidden beach, nestled beyond a 40-minute walk through a local jungle, offers a unique and secluded escape from the typical tourist spots. The journey itself adds an adventurous touch, making the arrival at the beach even more rewarding. What sets this destination apart is the rare opportunity to witness penguins, creating a magical experience, especially until early December. If you're seeking tranquility, a touch of adventure, and the chance to marvel at nature's wonders, this off-the-beaten-path beach is a hidden gem worth exploring.

Nice walk to a beach where penguin sightings are possible. Sand flys galore.
Edward — Google review
Enchanting easy walk where the rain forest meets the ocean.
At 3pm a couple coming from the beach said they say two penguins.
We waited for 15 minutes but couldn’t take the sandflies.
The walk down to the beach didn’t have any sandflies.
Three years ago I could hear the babies chirping in the rocks, it was Dec.
This time no chirping.
Enjoy!

I had an amazing experience on the best hike imaginable, through lush jungle leading to a stunning beach. Be sure to bring some spray to fend off the sand flies. With a bit of luck, you might even spot penguins!
The trail was easy to navigate, taking only 1.5 hours round trip. Restroom facilities available at the parking area.

A great walk through a forest to a secluded beach which is a breeding ground for penguins.
Unfortunately we didn't see any penguins on our visit, but the walk and the beach were worth it in any case.
It took approx 1h 20m for a walk out and back again, with a few minutes spent at the beach.
It was doable in trainers, and was mostly flat with an even walking surface.
Stewart McDonald — Google review
Beautiful walk through gorgeous forest. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any Penguins but still worth it.
Brigit Pratt — Google review
A small beach where you can see Fiordland crested pingouins, if you're lucky. We saw three in two hours.
They are quite shy, so lay down on a rock and be calm while waiting. Wear long clothes because of sandflies.
Quentin Li — Google review
We didn’t see any penguins on our visit in early February (midday), I think it’s best to go earlier in the year to see them nesting when they are more frequently spotted. The walk itself to the beach was pleasant and quite easy on the legs through a nice portion of forest/jungle.
Word of warning: cover up exposed skin as the beach was heavily populated with sandflies who were relentless!
Henry Green — Google review
This is by far a top 10 favorite walk. The entire walk is relatively flat traveling through a rainforest feeling surrounding you. The trees put on such unique displays the way they've grown into odd shapes and thicknesses. Most wearing beautiful moss leggings lol some with some covered entirely. The path is very clear and open. The air is fresh. We didn't spot penguins as we were told they left the area at the start of December. But we were pleased with the walk alone and the beach at the end was the "icing on the cake". We recommend, and as most reviews are saying, prepare yourself with covered clothing or repellent for the sandflies. We were covered and took a citronella candle, but no repellent sprayed on our exposed skin....amateurs. Luckily, just our hands were attacked. No dogs allowed.
Amazing views and a nice break from the drive. Clean toilet. Plenty of big parking spots available. More travel tips on YouTube caravantheworld

Theobelisk monument at Knights Point was set up to celebrate the completion of the highway connecting Westland with Otago.
What is interesting is the name. Usually Prime Minister's / politicians try to name things after themselves / monuments, buildings, roads etc. Usually it is called empire building.
If you don’t tell people about your success, then they probably won’t know about it. Wellington City is the capital where the politicians call the shots. Politicians are renowned for promoting themselves and naming stuff for posterity.
However, the construction crew outsmarted the delegation from Wellington and informed them that the area had "already been named" Knights Point. The officials inquired who "Knight" was and were informed that he was the surveyor's dog. Knights Point was named after Norman McGeorge's dog Knight.
The tail wags the dog! An expression
used to describe a situation in which an important or powerful person, organization, etc., is being controlled by someone or something that is much less important or powerful.
The official opening of this last section of the highway that is now State Highway 6 was on 6 November 1965.
Today the site includes a car park and viewing platform overlooking the coast towards Arnott Point, a resting area for New Zealand fur seals and occasionally elephant seals.

One of the many viewpoints on West coast. Nothing special about the place. Got a parking area and rest rooms. Beware of sandflies.
Naveen Peter — Google review
Not much to do here, no walks just a car park with some views and a toilet block. There are information signs that explain a bit of history of the area and the building of the west coast road.

Lasse P. — Google review
Not much to see on a rainy day. Could hardly see the water. I imagine the view would be ok on a sunny day, but as others have commented it’s pretty overgrown. Sand flies were out, so dress accordingly. There are loo/bathroom facilities though
Andy Andersen — Google review
Not the best view of the Tasman sea... As it's quit over grown... But nice monument here to avoid the history of the Haast pass. Clean toilets although it's just a long drop. Plenty of safe parking available.
coen cramer — Google review
First and foremost: come prepared with bug repellant! Tons of sandflies here and they’ll happily chomp on any exposed part of you otherwise.
Overall a pretty viewpoint, but not super remarkable. The whole region is so gorgeous that I didn’t find this specific spot to hugely stand out, if that makes any sense. Still a good place to stop and stretch your legs, and use clean bathrooms if you need them.
Ship Creek, located in Haast, offers two captivating walks that showcase the area's natural beauty. The Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk is a brief 20-minute stroll on a boardwalk through a lush swamp forest filled with towering Kahikatea trees. On the other hand, the Dune Lake Walk is a 30-minute adventure through sand dunes and coastal forests, providing stunning views of the coast.
A splendid place to stop and enjoy a couple of very different short walks. The kahikatea forest walk takes you right amongst some tall groves of these amazing trees. I love kahikateas and there are so few left in Canterbury, it's a real treat to walk amongst them. The dune walk was also a special experience with the white dunes and the flotsam that washes up on est coast beaches. We were there at sunset and it was quite magical. No sandflies were found!
Moira Fraser — Google review
I visited Ship Creek Beach in Aug 22, and it was great. Isolated and almost eerie during the late afternoon with no one else on the beach. As the photos show, there is a lot of Driftwood on the beach. It's not safe for swimming due to strong currents, and there are no lifesavers, so don't risk it.
Ahmad — Google review
The sand flies on the beach are thick! It's nice to be able to climb the tower, walk the boardwalk and beach. Just apply some bug spray. There were no sandflies on the swamp walk. Restrooms available

Nice scenic view of the beach. There is a view point where u have to climb ladders which is complicated. Public toilet available. No pets allowed
nirosh gamage — Google review
We did the dune lake walk. A nice short 15-20 minute walk, although the best views are obtained from the wooden lookout you can climb at the start of the track (so make sure you climb up this structure!). There are also a couple of nice lookouts on the dune lake track.

Ship Creek has a toilet and adequate parking. Easy walks & quick access to beach. Has a fun little spotting tower.

There are several short walks in the area, all on flat and well maintained boardwalks or paths. The beach itself has some lovely shiny rocks, and there is a bay near the carpark that is beautiful to see (and photograph).

Just beautiful!! Highly recommend the stop. Even got to see a pod of dolphins
Jodie Spedding — Google review
To the left, of the main entry/carpark a short boardwalk leads over the sand to a beach view and off this a pathway around 20 - 30 mins return and up about 30m of stairs to a viewing platform with views down the coast. Parking for all sized vehicles available and some good displays around to look over.
Tip - remember to take the sandfly repellant

Lovely loop walk to a tranquil lagoon. If you don’t have time for that climb the lookout. If you aren’t fit enough for that the beach and stream are still a very pretty sight.

This is a must-see en route up the West Coast. A beautiful and beautifully presented walk combining beach, woodland, and lakeside all within an hour. A credit to DoC.
At the main area and then along the pathway there are steps up to look-out points. So keep an eye out for them and make these short climbs which command great vistas.
And there’s a clean and tidy toilet block too!

Lovely little stop with three walk options, two tracks and then the beach, all wonderful. Some bigger parking spots available if you are towing a caravan. Highly recommended. See more on YouTube caravantheworld

Yes there are sandflies (the little gnats that bite and leave welts) so just have a jacket on and you'll be good :) The rocks. THE ROCKS. they are tumbled to perfection on this beach. If you love searching for rocks, go here - we collected way too many haha. Like a 1 min walk on a boardwalk from the car park to get to the beach.

Great natural beach location with two really interesting and informative short walks, and a lookout tower. The signage and boardwalks are fantastic.

There are 2 different walks here with a decent path or walkway, good to break up a long car journey on the west coast. There are toilets too if nature calls

Lovely stop with great views, even on a rainy day! The boardwalk makes experiencing the different sections of the bush really easy (with minimal sand!). Unfortunately, the swamp track is still closed as of March 2023.

Comfortable seaside with a few easy tracking trails, worth spending more time there to explore the beauty. LOTS of tourists LOL
Thunder Creek Falls is a stunning 96m tall waterfall located in New Zealand, making it one of the country's most impressive natural attractions. Just a short walk from the car park and only two minutes from the main road, this stop along SH6 is well worth it. The lookout point offers breathtaking views of the falls, making it a popular spot for visitors.
Very cool stop along the road to Haast.

Great waterfall and perfect spot to stretch your legs but we couldn’t stay long. It was late February and we were swarmed with biting bugs -midges maybe? Wish we had left earlier! Wear long clothes.
Haast Pass is a serene mountain pass that cuts through the Southern Alps, offering a picturesque journey through lush beech forests. Spanning approximately 140 km, this route from Wanaka to the West Coast showcases diverse vegetation and stunning scenery. The winding road allows for leisurely exploration of the region's breathtaking hikes and waterfalls. A road trip on South Island would not be complete without experiencing Haast Pass, which provides epic views and numerous opportunities for photos or walks in the native bush.
For many the Haast Pass is the scenic drive from Wanaka to the glaciers, with a stop at the Blue Pools.
But if you do a little research you will see the drive is filled with fantastic sites, provided you’re prepared to stop often, and take a short walk.
In order, on the drive up from Haast, make sure you check out Depot Creek falls (20 mins from Haast on the right, 200 walk metres walk), Roaring Billy Falls (23 mins from Haast on the left, signposted with car park, 15 mins walk on a flat track, but the rainforest scenery along the way is superb), Thunder Creek Falls (40 mins from Haast on the left, 5 mins walk to the right of the car park), Fantail Falls (45 mins from Haast on the right, 2 mins walk from the carpark).
And finally, the Blue Pools, which has heaps of parking, but is also popular with bus tours and day trippers from Wanaka and Queenstown. This is about a 40 minute walk each way.
There’s also plenty of places to pull over and admire the scenery, the bridges, river etc.
There are no shops or cafes between Haast and Makaroa, so stock up.
Stephen Spencer — Google review
This is an absolutely amazing drive and don't forget to stop here just on the way into Fox Glacier from Wanaka. The Haast Pass is amazing with so many photo opportunities and waterfalls 👌👌
James Buchan — Google review
Stunning place with great views all the way. The scenery is constantly changing and no matter where you look you will get breathtaking views of snow capped mountains to massive forests and roaring rivers. there is so many differnt places to stop along the way especially along the haast river where there is so many waterfalls including the thunder creek and fantail falls. another stop is the blue pools which are great for swimming. Both sides of the drive have great final destinations whether it be the seaside town of haast with massive waves and great seafood or the great place of wanaka with skiing and lots of other stuff.

Mountain scenery, rain forest, tree ferns a water fall and cicadas. Don't miss if you are touring South Island. The only services are at Haast or just north of Lake Wanaka at makarora. There is a rest area and campsite about half way with drinking water and toilets. Apart from that this is unspoilt countryside.

This is one of the best information centers in New Zealand in my opinion. A lot of useful information with maps, everything is new beautiful, there is a shop and a small museum inside.

Museum is great and well worth the visit.
However the gardens and water features in particular are in a state of disrepair. A bit sad looking as you walk past it to get to the museum. Hope they can fix water features soon.
Used to be a great place to stop for lunch or a break before crossing the HAAST river

A spatious centre with several permanent exhibitions, an info desk, and a small shop. The exhibitions are informative but dated. The centre could certainly use more funding from the DOC, especially as it's presenting the UNESCO World Heritage site information to the tourists. But definitely worth a stop.

The lady at the reception should learn how to greet people. She has no customer care. When I entered, the lady was on phone and did not even looked at us or did not smile. Looked like not bothered at all about our presence. There was nobody else in the office/shop. She must learn good manners. I just left the shop. I visited there with my two kids on 30/9/2020 at 12.45 pm. Very poor service.

A bit of a rare gem I think. Stopped in for a quick look about 4pm and could have spent a while wandering through the exhibitions but for closing time at 4.30pm. Helpful staff greeted and farewelled us, and the exhibitions and displays were interesting on top of the usual maps and guides available.

The Blue Pools Track in New Zealand is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. The area boasts lush green forests and stunningly blue rivers, with the famous Blue Pools being the main attraction. These beautiful pools exhibit mesmerizing watercolors created by rock flour from glaciers, surrounded by the vibrant greenery of New Zealand. However, visitors should be prepared for encounters with the local black flies.

This was our favorite thrill experience on the entire South Island! The jet boat was so much fun and we loved it so much that we wanted to go again. The scenery that you see from the boat is GORGEOUS! The color of the water is magical and we really enjoyed our wilderness hike to the jet boat pickup spot. Did this as part of the Heli Siberia Max tour with Backcountry Helicopters and couldn't recommend it enough!! 10/10 one of the best experiences you could do in the area!! Book it already :)

We used the jetboat for our transfers to and from the Gillespie Pass Circuit (Into Young Valley and out from Kerin Forks). Wilkin River Jets was great in communicating regarding booking spaces on the boats, and our transfers were punctual and stress-free. Definitely worth it not having to do a river crossing, and it was nice to take a spin along some very picturesque rivers. They do a great job with access to the mountains.

The Lindis Pass is a scenic alpine driving route that passes through a conservation area with striking mountain views. It is an attractive destination for tourists traveling from the Mackenzie Region to Queenstown or vice versa. The pass features several viewpoints and pull-offs where travelers can stop and take pictures, as well as hiking trails for those looking to explore more of the area. Additionally, there are some interesting attractions along the way, such as Cromwell's giant fruit sculpture.

We were on a road trip from Christchurch to Queenstown and stopped along the way for some amazing views. We were blown away by the beautiful scenic views of the snow capped mountains. Well worth stopping or taking a drive to visit. So beautiful and scenic. Loved it.

Decent panoramic views of the Lindis pass. We passed by on the way to Queenstown, from Aoraki, in autumn. The views are not exactly spectacular, but worth the short walk and stopover.

Driving from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo, Lindis Pass is incredible! The views are simple stunning, with big hills and open skies that show off how awesome New Zealand is.
It's like driving through a picture. The hills and sky make you feel like you're in the middle of nature's big show. Lindis Pass isn't just a road; it's a reminder of how amazing New Zealand's landscapes are.

I couldnt believe we can had such a beautiful scenery in this road 💜
To reach Lake Wanaka, take a detour from State Highway 8A and State Highway 6 (northbound) after passing through Tarras. The lake is one of New Zealand's largest and is surrounded by the mountains of Mt. Aspiring National Park. Wanaka town on the southern shore provides easy access to lake-based activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, boating, swimming in summer months and skiing during winter seasons.
Beautiful lake. It’s so wide; so just walking around it will take a while, but there won’t be any bad view. You can also see the famous Wanaka Tree, though it’s not that spectacular, in my opinion. But we saw it at low tide.

A highlight of the town and a nice place for walking around. I appreciated that there were so many nice public toilets, especially in the part that touches the town. It just means that anyone can really spend a long time at the lake and chill there.

Fantastic getaway. Enjoyed walking along the track on the lakefront.

A nice lake beside a small town. Water is clear and quite calm, you can go swimming in the lake near the town area. Walk about 20minutes further from the main town area and you can see #ThatWanakaTree

Beautiful lake with incredible views from every angle. We had mostly sunny conditions with just a few clouds, and the lighting was amazing for hours. If you want to add a walk to your visit, it may be best to stick to the beach instead of walking on the Waterfall trail. There were a lot of bikers enjoying the weather, so we found that the beach allowed our group to stick to a slower pace.

Lake Wanaka is different from other lakes as it's quite irregular in shape, making it utmost beautiful in every place around Wanaka. You can have totally different feels when driving along SH6, sitting on the jetty at town centre, walking on Roys Peak Track, resting on Mount Iron summit. Take a day or two in Wanaka, and you will definitely feel the beauty and magnificence of Lake Wanaka

Absolutely stunning with so much to see & do. Go boating or take a helicopter ride through the mountains, drive around and see the stunning scenery, visit the town & experience a truly beautiful tourist place with excellent vibes. Close to ski fields, gin distillery & more. Friendly locals always smiling & willing to help. A must see for all ages. Attractions like Warbirds over Wanaka & the toy & car museum. Stunning mountain views especially when snow is on them. Something magical about this place. Always something happening here. Put it on your bucket list & you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful lake with chalets and hotels lining is shores on the one end and massive mountain ranges on the other. Roy's peak is accessed from here which is a hike that takes you to that place you see on Instagram with sprawling views of the lake in all its glory. For the less adventurous, there are kayaks available to rent and other adventure activities

It’s one of my most favourite places in South Island. Gorgeous lake, calm and peaceful, perfect for walking, jogging, bike rides.

Small little town and a big lake. The famous tree is about a 15 minute walk from the town and can be done near the road or the water. The tree is much closer to the edge of the lake than expected, and much smaller than the photos. Nice pit stop in between a long car or bus ride. The weather can change the experience, definitely plan ahead if this is something you want to include in your trip!

A special tree that can give you great inspiration ! The Roys Bay of Lake Wanaka is only a a very small beach but there stands a very special and expensive tree. People call it the "Lone Tree" This willow tree submerged just off the shoreline of Roys bay in Lake Wanaka has become an iconic feature of the town . This photo album is only for this one tree ! Hope you like it .
The National Transport and Toy Museum in Wanaka is a place where enthusiasts can find almost every type of collectible toy. The museum has a kids play area, toy store, and picnic area.
Beautiful place. My little one really had great fun. They’ve got so many old things that will remind you of your childhood 😊

This is a comprehensive collection of almost every type of transport you can think of. Some displays have good explanation and/or background stories but most have very little other than the model etc. Cafe was nonexistent but the store itself was full of models to suit everyone.
There's a brewery next door with a great selection of beer but they only serve pizza if you're looking for lunch as well.

I came across the museum as I was leaving Wanaka and I had a bit of time to spare so I thought I'd quickly pop in to look around. I landed up staying for more than 2 hours, and I didn't even get to see everything! This place is absolutely wonderful and I'd recommend it to anyone who is in the Wanaka area. The museum has an incredible amount of pieces on display, and there is definitely something for everyone here. Looking through the toys was a wonderful trip down memory lane. The displays have been put together very well, and it's incredible to see the some of the old toys in such a good state. The vast array of vehicles within the different sections of the museum is mind-blowing. From planes, cars and motor bikes to bicycles, boats and fire trucks you can easily spend a whole day exploring this amazing place.

We spent more than 2 hours here checking out the exhibits in the 4 hangars, plus the ones outside too. It seems like there isn't enough space to display all of the things. Neat toy selection too. Some exhibits you are able to go or look inside. Good for the young and old too with toys for sale too

This place is amazing I was in awe the whole time truly takes you back in time. They everything from toys, old computers and radios. All the machines, cars and planes. Truly a must visit in wanaka.

What a lovely place!
It is really the best collection of vehicles and planes I have seen in New Zealand. There are an in fathomable amount of vehicles. Enough that my father could find each one of his old family cars!
I would recommend closer to 4 hours as it will give you an hour per building. There are also a few things to be seen out the back as well as in the yard.
Before in the store as it is best toy store you would of seen in a while, large collections of lego, plastic model, die cast models, dolls, Sylvanian family and more.
Highway recommend it for a days activity for all ages!

Beautiful huge place. The amount of cars, planes, motorbikes, toys and so on is amazing! You can spend hours looking at everything. The fire engine collection is amazing!!!! And it's the same with the car collection. You can find cars that are almost 100 years old!! They let you enter to 3 old aeroplanes.

Great place. You will be able to find something that interests you here. Been past many times. Very glad we finally stopped here. It has a bit of everything. Allow enough time to wonder around so you don't miss anything.

Great collection with everything from toy figurines to old typewriters, bicycles to jet aircraft. Something for everyone and could spend ages looking at everything. 90% of the collection is inside several buildings but there's also a few larger pieces outside on display. Didn't check out the cafe but the shop area has a lot of toys on sale.

The Wanaka Toy and Car Museum is an amazing place. There are so many classic cars, trucks and toys. You think you have seen it all and there is yet another building full of old vehicles. There are a number of aeroplanes too. Amongst the toys were a lot of model cars, Barbies and Lego.
A word of warning: My wife was following me round but she was getting rather weary by the end of it.
Well recommended for those interested in cars.

Unbelievable and exciting museum. One of world's hidden wonders, for sure.
Amazing collection of almost everything that world has produced in last 150 years. Toys, cars, bikes, chainsaws, engines, boats, airport cars, tractors, fire engines, planes, baby strollers, tanks, dolls, lego sets, hot wheels, model trains, model cars, decorative spoons, irons, fax machines, vintage computers, cans and... on and on. It's not possible to write it all. 10000% must see in South Island.

The sheer size of this. It just has so much to look at! For Lego fans and toy fans in general, the toy exhibits amazing. The cars, so many but none restored or shown very well. Even so, great to stroll thru this collection of mostly old British cars and a few American cars. The planes are great too.

Wonderful mountain, great views and challenges to climb. I climbed Mount Aspiring Dec 24 2019. I went in solo and found other climbers going for the summit on a good weather day. The approach I did in two stages. First to the lower hut on French Ridge, then to the Colin Todd hut near the summit. The climbers I teamed with, planned to take the early summer route just North of the NW Ridge. We did a 4 am start and there were two huge avalanches that changed our plans to do the full NW Ridge. The rock was mostly a scramble with a couple of 5.0 moves. The ice was very solid and the weather held. It was a good day and great views.
