We did not received a warm welcome at all, saying that it was pretty hard to see the glaciers with the recent washouts, and not proposing any alternatives to the closed trails.
Furthermore, the lady try to discourage to hike on the most beautiful hike of the area (which I will keep silent as maybe they don't want to send inexperienced trampers) without asking our level of fitness.
Hopefully we did the walk and the view was amazing and the hike not so hard as we took less time than the DOC said.
Instead of saying than the helicopter is the safer (and most profitable obviously) way to see the glacier, they should do what they are here for : advising people according to their experience of the mountain.
To conclude, please stop defending the terrible way of tourism that is Helicopter Tours, as if is was necessity to use choppers to see glaciers which are drastically melting.
Teddy Bouziat — Google review
I was supposed to join Franz Josef glacier helicopter tour but unfortunately due to the bad weather the tour was cancelled. I had no idea for my day in Franz Josef. The staff in i site was very helpful and nice. She gave me very useful suggestions for dining and indoor activities for example kiwi visit. She even gave me a 2 dollar coupon for kiwi visit. I was totally thankful.

A bit of a strange experience. Most of the sculptures were nice, but some of them gave me a fright. The walk itself was good though - good exercise through some nice trees.
Chloe Bettina — Google review
Great walk in the forest. Appreciate the signs telling us about the trees and the history of the forest. The carvings were amazing. Really great to keep the kids interested in the walk. Always looking out for the next one. Really good walk, path suitable for all. Cyclists are banned which is good, although we did encounter one

Well worth a visit. There is no admission charge, just a short nature walk. It is a short drive from the town centre. Clearly marked walking trail with various length and intensity of trail to choose from.
Karen C — Google review
It's not just a forest. It's an experimental exotic plantation a century after it was begun! With a humorously cute sculpture trail to explore.
We loved the walk as a family with a 4yo in tow but it would also have been great on bikes, even for the youngest.
Tim Galea — Google review
A quick stroll in the forest. We did the 'Forest Amble' track. A quick track rated at 30 minutes that was an easy stroll. We stopped at all the signs and attractions - it took us 50 odd minutes. Great walk. The carvings are very good.
Kent Boisen — Google review
The forest walk was like a treasure hunt. It was so much fun walking around looking for sculptures and learning about the forest. We really appreciated the work.
Oliva Odom — Google review
We walked the Sculpture Track and the forest journey and it was a lovely place. The sculpture wall would be great for families and along with he beautiful scenery of the forest you can find the sculptures along your journey. An easy flat track to walk. The journey track is nice for a longer walk.
Moneaun Smedley — Google review
Super interesting European forest, lots of beautiful walks, right next to freedom camping sites, with DOC facilities nearby. The sculptures are beautifully done. Its a shame they dont do a very good job of representing NZ wildlife. Just possums and squirrels and rats?? What on earth where they thinking?? Like the craftsmanship is fantastic but where is the pride of kiwi animals? It did have fantails and tuatara which was why I gave this 4 stars.

I recently rode on the 12 day Tekapo trek (& have previously ridden on a 6 day trek) with Apline Horse Safaris.
The horses are incredibly strong & sure footed. This is an amazing adventure with outstanding scenery that most people will never get the chance to see.
AF Hamilton — Google review
Lawrie and Jenny are just the best people! So patient with beginners, they have worked with horses their whole life's and you can tell !! We learned a lot and would recommend them to anyone who is up for an amazing real horseback adventure through NZ !

An experience like no other.
Horses that have been bred for this specific terrain and purpose over decades and know exactly what they are doing! Operators are just as skilled and you’re their number 1 safety concern.
Come along for one hell of a ride.
Capable people doing things to the highest calibre.
Highly recommend and guarantee you’ll want to come again.
I’m booked for the 12 day trek and can’t wait!

Lewis Pass, located in the South Island of New Zealand, is a historic mountain road that winds through a natural reserve area, offering breathtaking scenic views and a variety of trails for outdoor enthusiasts. The pass serves as an alternative route between the northern part of the island and Christchurch. Travelers can experience diverse landscapes including alpine hills, open valleys, and dense beech forests along this route.
We came across this pass while on route to the Western part of the island. We stopped for a short coffee stop and had a medium to short walk during our visit. I remember this place had some magnificent views and sure ones to not pass when in the neighborhood. Beautiful place overall.

Take this pass to get to the west coast instead of Arthur’s if you are towing a trailer or don’t have chains. But check on the NZTA website to make sure the pass is open before you hit the road. Road is in good condition though and the pass is not as steep as Arthur’s.
Ted — Google review
The best pass of NZ in my opinion

Great pass! The forest is amazing
Gabriele Zangarelli — Google review
Nature walk is a good leg stretch when driving through. It's a 20 minute round trip walk on the Canterbury side of the pass at the beginning of the St James walkway. It's a great introduction to alpine beech forest with views of mountains in all directions.

Lewis Pass at winter... Really Beautiful ❤
Alex C — Google review
There is a little hot pool towards the northern end of the road, it's right beside the river and is only a 5 min walk from the road. Night time in winter when it's snowing is a perfect time for a sit and chill in the hot water... used to be hard to find. But it's probably sign posted these days maybe

Amazing hike through magical beech forrest, stunning ridge lines and mountainsides. The hut facilities were above expectations and toilets well maintained and clean (love composting ones!). Well graded trails for walking just be mindful of mountain bikers approaching. Two semi fit 70+ year olds we took enjoyed it! Lots of water along track depending on recent rains. $160 pp for up to 4 nights, bunk rooms vary by hut but everyone very welcoming and shared cooking facilities. Even a trickle shower available. Outdoor sleep outs good option for family or couples but not heated/no cooking - can use main hut facilities!

Did not know about this place. We walked a short way in over the swing bridge. We really have some awesome scenery in NZ
Gayle Beattie — Google review
Superb walk, easy grades, spectacular exposure and great views. Excellent huts with lots of interesting points all through the hike. Great achievement to put this track through pristine country. It's a long walk but as it's built for bikes it's easy going.
Steve Warne — Google review
This is a sensational track – to walk or cycle. They have done an immense job to create a proper track over the entire 85km. This is fantasy back country stuff. Not just orange stickers nailed to trees, but dynamite and diggers and aggregate. The track is so well graded for cyclists that walkers stride up hill, barely noticing the climb. The huts are beautifully positioned and very well equipped – there are even bush showers. Each day has its own interest; 1st – Rising through beech woods, 2nd – ridge above the tree line, 3rd – skyline ridge (and the steps), 4th Boneyard (1929 earthquake carnage), and 5th – Mokihinui Gorge. I walked it in five days and will be back to cycle it in two, though there are other more heroic options.
Ashley Mooney — Google review
AMAZING HIKE!!
The history of the track is just awesome! (You can read the all story in a very interesting book available in each hut)
The huts are perfect, always in incredible spots, comfy, fully furnished (fireplace, gaz stove, cutellery, pots and pans, thick matresses, compostable toilets...)
Well worth the 160$!
Some sections are harder than others but it's not too challenging.
You can decide to hike or to bike this road, you'll find good atmosphere every evening joining all the trampers/bikers! 😊
That was fantastic!
Thank you!! 😃
alison richard — Google review
I'd recommend taking 3 days to ride the length of the trail. This will allow you plenty of photo opportunities! Trail is in great condition, with only a few places where it is difficult. Trail difficulty is intermediate with a few advanced sections, the most difficult section is between Ghost Lake hut and Skyline Steps
Oliver Bersani — Google review
Wow! Such an amazing achievement for the passionate crew that completed this trail for us to enjoy. Perfect mix of intrepid and healthy hard work to take this journey.
Reuben Maguire — Google review
Loved the experience. AMAZING track. Great huts to stay over night (fully equipped with gas). Best 3 days in the "wild" :)
Bartosz Morawiec (SHIKOSHA) — Google review
You'll be hard pressed to find 85km of anything this amazing!!
Old Ghost is the result of many thousands of hours spent by local men and woman punching the mountains until they yielded a trail.
And what a trail!!
Whether running, biking or trekking, few trails offer such varied scenery on such a manicured surface.
It's with good reason that the huts are booked out many months in advance.
I highly recommend checking out the trail in one day at the Old Ghost Road Ultra. Simply magic.
Kerry Suter — Google review
A great 5 1/2 hour ride up to highest point (Heavens Door) and back out to Lyell with a lunch break at Lyell Saddle hut
Don't forget to make a donation to the hard working track maintenance team fund if you are just doing a day trip and avoid paying hut fees. A fine snapshot of NZ native bush and high country scenery with some cool mountain bike track to boot
Neat couple of guys always worth stopping to pass the time of day with.

Locally run by bearded volunteers. This little living museum is a tribute to days gone by in Reefton. These dedicated men have put together a working replica of a little mining hut. They work and play around the hut and are very knowledgeable about the gold mining era.
When we were there we we're offered scones made in a cast iron pot over a coal fire.... Beautiful flavour!
This is a free museum with a donation box if you choose.
Aaron Hall — Google review
Great locals run this museum, to recount mining in Reefton and local area. With hands on panning available and a wealth of facts about the local mining operations it is a great place to check out.
Make sure you drop in a donation on your way out to keep this local knowledge open for everyone that comes through the town.
Sam Allen — Google review
A must see when visiting Reefton. The volunteers have vast local knowledge to share and are entertaining story tellers. Our 3 boys where even shown several magic tricks. The replica miner's hut is very authentic.
My family and I did the Arnold Family Raft 1/2 Day Tour with Nathan and it exceeded all expectations.
It was my children's (11, 10 and 6 years) first exposure to white water rafting and it was perfect. Nathan was so clear on what to expect and made it fun for the whole family. He regularly checked in with the kids to make sure they felt comfortable and we all had a blast.
Nathan took us rafting, let us go for a dip in the water and even fed us and gave us a warm drink at the end of the day.
Would highly recommend Inland Adventures.

Just returned from an awesome 4 days rafting the Waiau River with Nathan (AKA Reefton), Simon (AKA Chunk) and Samson, Quinn and Bree as our guides. What a team they made! So much experience being shared with younger, newer guides = great to watch. It was a super adventure down a truly stunning part of S Island. The journey was full of amazing views, gorges, rapids, mountains and a few surprises. The food was really delicious (& plentiful). We felt safe, valued and entertained throughout the full 4 days and would highly recommend this expedition for any adventurous travellers. Thanks Nathan et al.

Totally amazing day. Brilliant, fun experience for us, with our 2 children (aged 12 and 14). Lots of fun rapids and great raft guides. Lunch was also delicious :)
Sarah Exon — Google review
We took the 1 day grey wilderness rafting tour a few days ago. My boyfriend and I had a fantastic time! The rapids were fun but not scary or too strenuous. Nathan prepares a delicious "create your own" sandwich spread and takes pictures periodically on the trip. We got to swim a bit in the water as well where it was calm. A++ would recommend to anyone looking to connect with nature more on the South Island.
Michelle Gilliard — Google review
We had a fantastic adventure yesterday with Nathan, Greg & Murphy. The rafting was fun for all, lunch at Annie Gorge was fabulous. Go spirit fingers! 🫱🫲
Clare Crosswaite — Google review
I had a great day's rafting with Nathan. He's an excellent guide, interesting to chat to, very experienced and knowledgeable. He collected me from outside the Ikamatu hotel bang on time and we drove to the entry point for the river. Once there we put on the wetsuits, boots, helmet and flotation aid before carrying the boat to the river, a few minutes away. Nathan gave a very good safety brief along with paddling instructions.
The time on the water was just right and the mix of excitement through rapids was balanced by stretches of calm. I've rafted elsewhere and it can be exhausting, this wasn't but that didn't detract from a great day out.
Thanks Nathan. 👍

We had an amazing 2 day experience with the Inland Adventures team in early 2023. We had a wide range of fitness, experience and ages involved and the team were incredibly supportive and made sure everyone enjoyed the rafting and the environment. We all felt safe and the food was incredibly good! It was such a good experience and I can't wait to go again.

This was absolutely amazing. Not recommend to those with a few walking problems and bending the back at the same time . My next birthday is 70 , and i really enjoyed it . The guide expected us to take our time, take as many photos as possible and to enjoy ourselves and we did. The train ride from the caves was soothing and relaxing . Roughly 4 hrs round trip. Use the toilets before leaving. $130 each for adults , but hey you may never get another chance so just do it . Our guide Andrea was very knowledgeable , pleasant and very patient . All in all dam good day .

The Nile river train trip was just awesome, well run with fabulous information. About a 12 min train trip followed by a 7 minute walk brought you to a swing bridge. Highly recommend this tour.
Gayle Beattie — Google review
Knowledgeable guides, pristine native bush and a slightly bonkers small train ride.
After yeeting the derailed tiny train back onto the rails we were given tubes to carry with the promise of being able to sit in them eventually.
After a bit of a hill climb, during which the kids only asked 712 times "are we there yet?", we entered the caves and were entertained by the knowledgeable and kiwi-as guides. We had a "good chat".
The caving experience was actually magical af. The tube conga line through the cathedral like glow worm cave was eerie and wondrous.
Getting to sit in said tube and have my butt smacked by various rocks on the ride back down the river was as much fun as a girl could possibly have wearing a wetsuit and helmet. Would hundies recommend. Would do again.
Erihapeti McPherson — Google review
We did the Glowworm Caves Tour and really enjoyed it. At first we received our wetsuits and helmets and got a safety explanation. After a short bus ride we travelled with a little train which took a windy path through the forest. After a short walk we arrived at the caves and there our guide showed us amazing stalagmites and stalactites while explaining how they are formed and what is so special about it. The guide took the photos as it wasn’t permitted to take own photos. The taken photos were provided via a download link right afterwards and looked beautiful. At the end of the cave we hopped onto our tube and switched our helmet lights off to enjoy the magnificent glowworms in the absolutely dark cave. It was like looking at the night sky, certainly something special! As soon as we exited the cave we took the tubes down the river to get back to the train. The tube ride was a fun experience, a little bit similar to rafting. All in all we had a great time and learned a lot about caves and glowworms!

I would highly recommend the Underworld Cave Tour. We took our children aged 8 and 11 on this tour and it was just fantastic. We travelled into the forest by van and then train, which the kids thought was great, before climbing the 130+ steps and into the cave. We were exceptionally lucky to have a highly experienced tour guide Ray, who kept us all entertained with interesting stories and facts about the cave. He happily shared his enthusiasm and expertise, as he expertly guided us through the cave. We all thoroughly enjoyed our 3.5 hour cave adventure, especially seeing the glow worms and finding out so many interesting facts about caves. Well worth a trip to Charleston for this wonderful experience.

Well worth doing for a completely unique experience. We did the tour which included the tubing and it was a great way to see everything. Our guide Lianne was a storehouse of information which made it a fascinating as well as fun experience. Bonus was that the portions of chips were massive!

Fantastic tour!!!! The cave is very natural - not commercially developed like other tourist caves. The glowworm portion is unbelievable. Then you get to go tubing down the river. A not to be missed adventure!

Wanted to give my 14yo an experience and memory. So glad I discovered knife making with Steven and Robyn. What an awesome couple and a brilliant day. Our knives will be cherished and used for years. Strongly recommend this but encourage you to book early. We were lucky to get in due to a cancellation.

We had such an amazing time ! Robyn and Steven were great teachers. There was lunch, afternoon tea & biscuits, and even an afterwork beer !
Would definitely recommend this unique experience. We're leaving with amazing memories and a beautiful knife.
Thank you so much for a lovely day 🙏

What an amazing experience! We came over from Christchurch for a birthday thing, and had such a great day. Steve and Robyn are pros, they've been teaching people how to make knives for 17 years now, so you're in safe hands. You get to forge steel, smash white hot metal with a sledge hammer, shape it into whatever kind of knife you like (within reason, no cleavers i don't think), cut the wooden handle to size, lots of grinding and sanding and you leave with an incredible knife that YOU made! Steve is a real character and highly skilled, and will ensure you make the best knife possible. Absolutely recommend Barrytown Knifemaking!
Morgan Williams — Google review
A truly amazing day. So incredible to start with a piece of timber and a piece of metal and end up with a knife I made. Great teachers, lots of knowledge and stories. Would thoroughly recommend. I did it with my son, thinking it was more something for him but was amazed how thoroughly I enjoyed it.

Our family had such a great day making knives in Barrytown! Who would have thought?? Steven and Robin were terrific hosts and guides, and definitely characters. Our whole family had fun including both adults and our 12 and 14 year olds - not an easy crowd to please. It's a full day and is absolutely worth the time and money. We each think our knife is the best knife and we are ridiculously pleased with ourselves. The axe throwing, giant swing, and delicious lunch and snacks were all added bonuses. Monteith's Brewery is a top craft brewery in New Zealand and is home to a brewery tour. If you visit on a busy night, be prepared to wait, but the food and drinks are worth it. The restaurant staff are friendly and knowledgeable, making it a great place to meet friends or family for dinner.
Wow what a fantastic spot to visit. The new Manager is out there interacting with the visitors and is very informative of the whole process. Service was great and the food even better. 10/10.

This was our first visit to Monteith’s Brewery for lunch.
We were a group of 4 vegetarian folks. We had the noodle salad, cauliflower florets, beer-battered fries and Mexican tacos. All the dishes were nice, delicious and well presented. In particular, the cauliflower florets was the best, while the beer-battered fries dish was huge!
The service was prompt. The seating and cutlery was good - plenty of space.
We finished with a dessert- chocolate brownie- which was superb too.
We will be happy to dine here again.

Total thumbs-up here for Monteith’s!
Excellent food, coffee and of course, beer at this spacious and hip bar/restaurant. Was quiet on a weekday morning around brunch hour, I can imagine how lively it would be on busy evenings in particular!
Every dish we ordered was delicious, excellently prepared and we wiped everything clean. Their venison burgers seem popular on Google Reviews and I can confirm they are great! Very flavourful and moist. Love their shoestring fries too - perfectly seasoned and crispy.
Not forgetting the drinks - for $25 you get to sample a selection of 6 of their beers/ales/lagers and take a journey of different flavour profiles. Our personal favourite was the Golden Lager and this is probably an unsurprising preference but it was fun to try so many different drinks.
Overall very happy with our visit and would recommend.

I love this place! Monteith's Brewery in Greymouth is always a good time, the staff are friendly, there's loads of room and the beer isn't too bad! I wish I had taken more photos, especially of the food (the fish and chips are great). They're not open on Monday - so don't do what I did and turn up to a closed bar. I loved their outdoor areas too, particularly the one with the festoon lights and outdoor fireplace. If you're looking for a place on the coast for a drink and eats, with friendly locals then Monteith's is the spot for you.

Really good - the kind of quality one would expect in a much larger city. We enjoyed the Thai chicken salad and 'Herbert Street Haul' (fish and chips). A bit pricey, but by this point in our trip we were used to it.
Huge space, but very busy and we were lucky to get a seat without a reservation on a Saturday night.

Stopped in on my way to our campground. Amazingly friendly staff. Place was empty but I bet they treat everyone just as nice. Had the brisket sandwich and boy was it good. Hope you are hungry cuz it’s big. Very generous servings. The kids meal was a tad too small but I guess my kid eats more than others. Great vibe the beers were great. Took home some velvet stout. Smooth and chocolatey. If I even come back to the beautiful area of New Zealand it’s on my must stop short list.

We drove out from Chch to see Monteith's and it didn't disappoint! We love craft beer and breweries and even though Monteith's is part of the Heineken family now, it's still got some good history and local charm. We got to check out the back area where they use to brew, so cool.
Shoutout to Jerry/Gerry, a fellow Canadian from Alberta who made us feel so welcome! Cheers!

Great pub with awesome food. Service was excellent and an awesome atmosphere for 4pm Sunday. We ordered the Pork Ribs, Phoenix Burger and the Lamb Burger. All were big portions and delicious. Would of stayed and had a few more beers listening to the live music but had the kids in tow. Highly recommend

We visited this venue as a pre booked tour group. We received a great welcome and a behind the scenes tour (probably available to all visitors if you book ahead). We had a bit of fun 'pulling' our own beers before an amazing buffet lunch and beer (for our group) with a handy six pack of beers/ciders to take away. The staff, beer, cider, food, and experience were wonderful!

The brewery exceeded expectations with its diverse tasting range, offering a delightful journey through various flavors of finely crafted brews. The tasting room ambiance was inviting, creating the perfect setting to explore and enjoy the different beers. Complementing the exceptional drinks, the brewery also impressed with its really good food options, turning the visit into a complete and satisfying experience for the taste buds. The combination of quality brews and delicious food makes this brewery a must-visit for beer enthusiasts and food lovers alike.

We originally were just stopping in for a beer, but when we saw the menu, we grabbed lunch. I’m so glad we did! It was really good food! My husband ordered the chicken tenders and they allowed me to order the children’s portion of the venison sliders. It was the perfect portion for me for lunch. The beer was really good too!

Great place to visit when you're visiting the West Coast. Join the brewery tour they provide as it's a good history lesson of the Monteiths family. Unfortunately most of the brewing isn't brewed at this brewery anymore, but in Timaru. Great food, great atmosphere, and great beer 🍺 will definitely be back again.

Shantytown Heritage Park is a recreated 19th-century mining town in New Zealand, offering visitors the chance to experience the gold rush era. The park features steam train rides, gold panning activities, and historic reenactments that bring the pioneering stories of real New Zealanders to life. Visitors can wander through authentic 1860s shops and homes, as well as try their hand at gold panning using traditional techniques.
The kids loved their morning exploring the town. Their highlight was the gold panning, an absolute must. They were blown away with all the "old" things and the way life was not too many years ago. The staff were so friendly & accommodating. A+ attraction & an asset to the West Coast community & tourism industry. Let's hope it's kiwis can help to keep it going by making sure we visit when we can.

Kids had an awesome time. Rug up warm (train trip was cold) Don't let the rain stop you just dress appropriately. It was a great excuse to spend time in the cafe for delicious warm lunch. The kids enjoyed the lolly selection. Nana got a thrill receiving the Shantytown frank on her postcard. Lots to explore and learn.

What a great day! There was so much to see and read and learn about the human stories behind so much of the early days in the area. It was fascinating. Steam train was great and the 'conductor' on board had 2 young lads attention captured with what he told them about the train. The most fascinating place for us was the rock and mineral building. Awesome fossil displays and amazing rocks. We spent ages in there. What a lot of hard work and time has gone into it. Thoroughly recommend a visit to it but allow yourselves time to read at least some of the boards of information as it certainly adds to the experience.

What an awesome half day spend in Shantutown. Probably similar to most other historical villages, but was the first time for us to visit one with the kids. There is a cafe where you can get aome food and drinks. It closes at 3pm. Included in the ticket price (we had a family pass for $99) was a train ride where you can see a logging history and also 4 tickets for gold panning which was a highlight for the kids. There is a nature walk with some more history about gold mining. There are some audio boxes all around the town but most of them dont work unfortunately. Its a real ahame as those which were working were not oy informative but fun as well. We were told there will be a showcase of a water gun at 1pm as well, we were there but nobosy came to show us.
The whole village doesnt look maintained very well. Its a shame as otherwise it would be a 5star from us. Oh and there is a playground and picnic tables all around as well so you really can spwnd half a day there easily.
Wander Whiff Kids — Google review
Their gold washing was fun, but the whole experience is only alright, the train ride is supposed to be a highlight but can be crowded and have poor visibility, everything else might not live up the vibe, we got bored rather quickly. I also don’t recommend booking online since it’s the same full price, yet you can easily find discount vouchers around local businesses that can get u up to 20% off.
Carl K — Google review
Great - got talking to the lovely woman that was driving the train that day and learned a thing or two about how it works. Half a ton of coal a day is quite a lot eh? I’m the information provided about life during the gold rush is interesting- and makes you value what you’ve got these days. 10% of the population was here and drank 25% of the country’s alcohol!

Great place to spend some time. There’s plenty of replica buildings and even a few originals from the area. Information boards everywhere covering the history of the area. Only downside is there is a bit of a lack of shade in some places so make sure to bring a hat. There is a shop in the town street which sells ice creams and sweets which is great on a hot day. 4/5
Chch Local — Google review
We were surprised just how much we enjoyed our visit to Shantytown.
We booked in advance, and parking was free. Entry was easy and we visited the town buildings before boarding the steam train. Lovely 1km trip up the line, where we panned for - and found - gold, which was presented to us in a little vial.
We visited the engine sheds and took photographs of the “lokies” (locomotives).
A really fun day out - thank you, Shantytown.

Chris Murray — Google review
Amazing place that must not be missed. Old time photos are wonderful. Must book and if you can go when it's not busy you can take your time. Allow plenty of time to read the history, and definitely do the gold panning.
Ged and Nat Croul — Google review
Would like more live, in character reenactors at each of the activities. Enjoyed the arrival of local resident family of flightless, and endangered wekas. Better deal especially for senior visitors than other gold camps. Needed more time than our 2 hour visit to adequately visit all areas. Missed sluicing demonstration and about half of village.
Donald Henninger — Google review
Brilliant experience, it had been 20 years+ since we'd been here as children and we wanted to bring our children. We arrived from ChCh and really enjoyed it. The only disappointment was that the old time photo dress up wasn't available. We had been telling our children about it and they were excited about it. Otherwise great day.

I thoroughly enjoyed this place. They recommend atleast 90mins to really enjoy the attraction, but I could have spent all day there. The staff at the entry counter were friendly, the train driver and guide were knowledgeable and the lady that took the old time photo (additional cost) was helpful. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the Greymouth area - a great opportunity to step back in time and see how the wild west coast was back in the days of the gold rush (you can even pan for gold too(for an additional cost)).

Beautiful place and great staff! Everyone was friendly. The weather was overcast but still warm which I was happy with. There was a lot to learn and interact with and the walks were really nice! My partner was disappointed because he really wanted to see the steam train that has been replaced by a diesel train, the conductor was friendly and answered all his questions.
Jade Chase — Google review
Great place, rich in history. Kids will love the train. The toilets are very clean and I loved the doors. There is even a friendly Weka at the end of the tail track
Kay Deeming — Google review
Our visit to Shantytown was a pleasant stop, providing a nostalgic journey into the past. However, the overall experience felt a tad pricey for what was offered. The wealth of information and historical insights were appreciated, but the charm of the place might be better suited for families with kids.
On the upside, the staff was exceptionally friendly, adding a welcoming touch to the visit. If you're looking for a family-friendly outing with a taste of history, Shantytown could be the perfect fit.

A very good experience seeing trout and salmon as well as feeding eels and kiwi. Particularly, the kiwis here are very energetic, not too shy and very visible to viewers
Leon Su LS — Google review
A great place to see lots of variety of fish, the feeding eels was an awesome experience right up close, they are so gentle! Catch n release koura (small crayfish) was so cool! And seeing the kiwi right up close was very special. Our 6yr old loved it. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. We spent around 1.5hrs here.

Do catch a crayfish when you're there, such easy targets.
Kiwi feeding was amazing too, finally saw them! Picture is night shot on pixel 7, it's actually pretty dark in there.
Csabi Bácskai — Google review
Cool experience and very interactive :) if you come at feeding time (10am, 12pm, 4pm) you can touch and feed the eels. The kiwis were easy to see with a little bit of patience 🐦 A little bit on the expensive side but a kiwi photo and a free choc is included so overall I would say it is worth the money. The staff are also very friendly and knowledgeable making the experience 10/10

Had a great visit here 2 weeks ago. Beautiful aquariums; fish, turtles, frogs and eels, among other amazing wildlife. Informative panels made for a great educational experience. All really easy to access, and a great kiwi room. The staff at the front were very friendly.
Worth a visit and will definitely come back another time if we are in Hokitika.

Didn’t mind supporting The Kiwi Centre on our brief stop through Hokitika and the team of staff was just an exceptional bunch, but I’m not sure how I feel about some of the activities here. To entice visitors, there’s eel fishing that you can partake in and also crayfish catching (you have to release them back after). The eel fishing is a monitored process so it isn’t too bad, although it’s quite a sight for some if you can’t stomach a lot of eels bobbing up and down fighting for food. Crayfish catching (then releasing) felt like quite a cruel activity since the crustaceans would no doubt be stressed with the whole event. It would be better if there’s staff monitoring or signs to warn visitors to be gentle with them. Saw some kids and adults touching them carelessly and also just throwing them back to the water from a height. Poor crayfishes! We did have fun though and even stayed here for a good 2 hours or so. Of course, we also saw the two kiwis there and loved the experience.

This place is awesome!! My partner and I stumbled across this gem while visiting Hokitika and didn't know what to expect but we were amazed with what we found. Such incredible close up encounters with Kiwi and feeding the giant eels! Saw fish I had never seen in my life before here, and catching the crawfish was so much fun - we could have done it all day long! The staff were so friendly and informative. We felt so lucky that we had the whole place to ourselves this day. Honestly couldn't rate it high enough - awesome experience for a fantastic price.
Molly Turpin — Google review
Great indoor activity for when the weather on the coast isn't compatible with enjoying the outdoors (which is 50% of the time!) Feeding the eels was free and quite fun. I was able to view a kiwi up close and fish for bugs. The guide was educational and overall it exceeded our expectations.

A MUST VISIT! It’s only a small centre but 110% worth the money. We got to feed and pat the lovely eels and the staff member answered everyone’s questions and was so friendly. We also saw TWO kiwis (!!) and you get a complimentary picture of one of them when you leave (a very nice touch), and a chocolate fish, yes they even give you them if you’re older than 6 years old. Jeremy on the front desk was really funny and thank you to the eel lady too. If I’m ever back in NZ I will be sure to visit again.

We had a fantastic time at The National Kiwi Centre today. The man on the desk (sorry I didn't catch your name!) was so inviting from the moment we arrived. Lois showed us how to feed the eels, and I went in with a phobia of eels and walked out having fed and touched them! She was very informative and seemed to genuinely love her job. I loved the staff's admiration for New Zealand's wildlife.
Catching some crayfish was also great fun, and before we knew it we had been in there for hours. Time flies when you're having fun. Thanks!
Caris Dawe — Google review
It is quite a value for money option compared to the other kiwi centres - this centre has so much to offer, on top of the kiwis. They also took in a lot of giant freshwater eels from a factory, and the eels are typically senior, boasting an average age of 80?! Haha. In addition, they also offer you the chance to feed the eels and also try your hand at prawning (you are given hooks with fresh bait to entice the lovely crustaceans in a dedicated water feature). There's also a glowworm replica area to help you acclimatize to the low light settings in the kiwi area.
Although it's a pity we can't take photos of the kiwis, the centre is lovely enough to offer us a high res photo of the kiwi as a keepsake which was a nice touch. Overall, definitely recommend coming to visit the centre!! 😊🙌

Greatly exceeded our expectations - far bigger than expected, with excellent clean and attractive tanks, displays, etc. Much better view of kiwis than at Auckkand Zoo.
Great interactive experience with 100 year-old eels! We had no kids with us, but kids that were there were having a great time. There was also a big kids play/relax room.

This is very much an aquarium turned Kiwi Sanctury, so beware those who may fear aquariums.
Got to see Kiwis in there enclosure up close. Their chonky little booties were the most adorable.
The displays were super informative and we even had an opportunity to learn about and then feed eels which was absolutely delightful.
There is a space towards the back for kids to let off some steam.
Good experience and fantastic for a rainy day in Hokitika (its also worth going even if it is sunny)

An awesome shop to support the local artists. As an ads Accredited tour guide, I’ve driven pass this city many times but never had the chance to go in. Now I do. Lots of interesting things to sell, price tags are high. I suppose the rent in Hokitika isn’t much as such big shop wouldn’t exist in Auckland. Hope that this shop can survive in this Covid global pandemic.

Great place to visit however the beach area near the city area isnt a pleasant place to swim in nor walk on the sand area esp during high tide. Too many scattered wood and trees washed ashore. The walkway areas are nice to walk around and have a picnic. It gets a bit windy to so make sure you take some spare warm clothes. Very close to shops and shopping centers for your food fix and some great eating areas around the city.

Located in the South Island, West Coast Tree Top - Zipline offers a thrilling experience amidst nature. Visitors can explore a 20-meter-high canopy walkway over mature rimu trees and enjoy panoramic views of the coast, lake, and forest. The site features a spiral viewing tower, cafe, and souvenir shop for visitors to relax and take in the surroundings. Additionally, there is a 425-meter double zipline that provides an exhilarating adventure through the treetops.
We would have totally missed this place had the gold pan experience in Ross not recommend it as a great lunch stop.
We arrived and ate a delicious lunch and weren’t going to go to the treetops walk as seemed expensive.
Then we saw a brochure and talked to a couple who had just done it so decided to venture forth.

Kids not overly happy with the lunch choices. We (adults) thought it was nice, good gf options. Tree walk was good. It was quite foggy when we went so not the best for veiwing the ranges. You are very high up so if don't do heights it may not be for you.

Such an amazing experience through the beautiful west coast rainforest treetops! It was not only an enjoyable adventure but at the same time a thrilling experience!
West Coast Treetop Walk is a highly recommended excursion through the 20 meters high and over 450 meters long steel platform. Visitors will be surrounded by relaxing and spectacular views during the visit.
The 40 meters high Hokitika tower is the highlight of the walk but it is not for everyone because the stairs are very narrow and you could feel the strong wind and vibrations as you climb.
There is also a cafe at the entrance of the walk and visitors can enjoy some food before exploring the tree top!

This is well worth visiting and gives you a magical experience of being high up in the tree tops. The bird life seen and birdsong heard was incredible. I currently have some issues walking and managed to walk to the beginning of the treetop walk from the entrance and around the wonderfully constructed metal loop. However, I was certainly grateful for the ride back after completing my loop which was easily arranged.

It is a great place to experience the trees at a higher level. I am a little afraid of heights and was sceptical whether I would be able to do this. The structure is very well made 👌 and I felt safe despite being so high up. There are railings either side to hold on as you walk the route, if you need them. Climbing the spiral was the scariest thing for me, but I was chuffed to have done this. We only did the treetop walk, but I did watch a few people do the zipline over the trees back to the start area.

We were recommended this place by a friend. So glad we stopped in as the views are amazing.
It’s a short walk up a gravel drive from the cafe (shuttle provided if assistance required), from there you walk out on to a very well engineered steel platform structure that takes you out across the tree tops of some amazing native trees.
The staff were very friendly and the coffee was a nice reward after our winters day tree top stroll.

This is so cool and incredible value for money. We did it in light drizzle and still exceeded expectations. There are two parts that will test your love for heights but they are optional. It is stunning and the views phenomenal - out, across and ... down. Even my teen boys were impressed !! Ps. The cafe is excellent for coffee, chips and cabinet treats.

For a deal on grab one for $25pp to enter. It was worth the money. It's cool how it's all put together and I wasn't scared at all. Felt safe up there 🥰

The tree top walk was lovely, but the zip line was not working and the cafe had no food. For some reason the zip line was out of action, although no explanation was given. The staff while functional didn't really lend any empathy, no sorry to say the X is not working today because....nothing. So as I will never get another chance to complete the zip wire that was a little disappointing. No food was inconvenient. Staff could have done a better job if explaining why but hey ho.

Our family really enjoyed our visit to the Treetop Walkway. The walkway is well constructed and offers great views of the forest and lake, with points of interest along the way. Be aware there is a relatively short but steep walk to the beginning of the walkway. Partway along the walkway is a tower which you can climb for even better views if you don't mind walking up 106 steps! The zipline starts here, which my niece did and thought it was great. We arrived soon after the place opened at 10am, when it was pretty quiet. This is a good time to go, and if you want to eat at the café, get there before the queues start because it can take a long time to order and then to receive your food. Note there are no prices alongside the meals written up on the blackboard, but they are also on an à la carte menu so just ask for that. I thought that food and beverage prices were quite reasonable considering it's a major attraction. Oh and if you buy your tickets online, you can get a 10% discount. Also you can add the zipline on when you get there if you haven't decided you're doing it when you buy the walkway tickets online.

The view is very nice but you are walking just on top of the forest. You cannot see any trees or birds because they are not close enough. I was thinking from the photos that it was a mix between walking in the forest and on the metal structure but not. Very short and expensive. I've been in 100 forests in NZ which were much better than that and free.

If you want to do the zipline definitely book in advance! Lucky for me i just wanted to do the walk. Highly recommend doing this. Beautiful nature to be seen

Just had a turn on the Zipline, which is an absolutely amazing experience well worth the $69. The staff were very helpful and cheerful.
Keep it up.

Sturdy walkways amongst the treetops. I am scared of heights and although I could not climb the lookout tower, it was still an amazing experience and I never felt unsafe. Use the provided map to learn more about the area, its wildlife and trees. Highly informative and a great outing you can do in 30-45 minutes.

White Heron Sanctuary Tours is an amazing adventure and highly recommended. Dion is extremely knowledgeable about the herons and their habitat and it was clear that a lot of care goes into predator control and keeping the area healthy for the herons. The sanctuary itself is stunning and provides a wonderful spiritual experience while also attracting nesting birds.
We went right at the end of the breeding season and Dion was very honest with us that we wouldn't see as many Kotuku as during the season. But we still had a great trip. Dion is extremely knowledgeable and we saw enough herons and Royal Spoonbills to captivate us. The predator control they undertake and the care for the herons habitat is very impressive.. .Highly recommend the White Heron Sanctuary.

Amazing Experience!
I went with Dion and Adele for a tour on 1st March. In the days leading up to the tour, Dion was very open in explaining that all of the heron had finished nesting and had gone, and that it was possible that we wouldn't see any at all. Still, I decided to go so I could see and experience the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve.
The initial walk through the forest was terrific, and we spotted some Tui and Silvereye in the super lush plant life. Shortly after, we observed two juvenile herons in the distance until they wandered out of sight. I was happy just to see the hide and where the birds typically nest, and luckily four herons flew right over to the nesting area so I was able to get some pictures. On the way out, we saw a Harrier, Cormorant, and Kingfisher. I feel very fortunate to have had such a unique opportunity and great luck on that day!
Thank you Dion and Adele for an incredible experience!

What an amazing adventure. Getting there via boat was exciting, walking in was easy with high quality walkways. The ambience of the bush was really a spiritual experience. Oh... and the nesting birds were spectacular. Well worthwhile cost.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! The tour fulfilled everything we were told to expect, and every bit of it magnificent. My only suggestion is that the lovely people giving their lives to supporting this unique colony learn correct Maori pronunciation - five vowel sounds and you'll have it! But truly, a fabulous experience. I encourage everyone to take this tour.
Colette O'Kane — Google review
We came here on 21 March. Originally we weren't going to visit, as we knew the white herons had left, but we called them and they said there would still be a lot to see and it would be worth visiting. So we did a 2.5 hour tour with Dion, the current owner of the business.
Indeed the protected reserve is a very special place and Dion showed us his normal boardwalk route through the forest to the nesting site, where there were no herons. However, overall, we felt the walk was too rushed, because Dion keeps walking quickly ahead whilst he points out some highlights of the plants and wildlife. We were also a bit disappointed that the full price of $150 is charged whether or not it's nesting season.
So whilst we support this reserve and the business, we would've appreciated a more relaxed pace so we can more comfortably absorb and learn about this very special place, and a lower fee for when the herons are away would be more fair (and probably attract more visitors).

The team here was so accommodating of my broken foot! It was a lovely walk to the shelter to view the herons. I had no idea this was the only spot in all of New Zealand that the herons nest. The price was a bit high but it is certainly a unique experience

Deon and family really want you to have a great experience, and we did! We enjoyed the tour and learning a little bit about many things especially about the rain forest and the white herons.

Fabulous experience. I stayed a night at the motel to do this trip (motel and tour are operated by the same couple - Adele & Dion), and couldn't rate the whole experience any higher. The motel was comfortable and scrupulously clean, the tour was just amazing with great views of the nesting birds. We saw chicks in various stages of development - some quite big ones stretching and flapping, some still tiny; one pair of birds still courting; and one small territorial disagreement. The highlight for me was watching the parent birds greet each other when coming in from hunting to swap over chick-sitting duty. Our guide, Dion, was very knowledgeable and could answer all questions thrown at him. Both Adele and Dion were brimming with West Coast hospitality and went well above and beyond to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. It was also great to see how they are working with DOC to help monitor the kotuku population and trap predators.

What a splendid tour! If you are wildlife lover this is a must! One of a thing should not miss it when you are in West coast. White herons are such a unique amazing creature and this is the only nesting site in NZ! Highly recommended!

Part of our Crochet Club went yesterday, Sunday. It was amazing, awesome, incredible. The birds are so beautiful, tending their nests. feeding their chicks and minding their eggs. Dion is a terrific guide. He knows all about the birds, the forest and so many things on the drive to the sanctuary. As a special treat he showed us the newly blooming green orchid. Beautiful. A fantastic experience we highly recommend.

Such a wonderful tour. You’ll walk through the rainforest to find the nesting area and if you’re there the right time of year you’ll see adults and chicks. Dion was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable

What a fabulous experience. We heard about it through friends and we are so glad we did it. Dion is a very informative guide who shares a lot of knowledge about the area and the birds. Best of all is the walk through the forest to the viewing platforms. The birds are majestic and so beautiful. They don't do the jet boat ride due to previous floods but that doesn't spoil anything. Besides the White Herons we saw Spoonbills and Shags also nesting. We were there at the right time as they nest and breed from September.

We came across this trip by chance and decided to go on it, thank goodness we did, it was absolutely wonderful, Dion was very informative about the area prior to getting to the site and when we arrived the view from the hive was lovely, lots of White Herons on their nests even saw babies being fed. Also saw Spoonbills and shags, all nesting and flying around. Thank you for the wonderful experience. Will certainly recommend you to our tour company in the UK. Best wishes Barrie and Jane Vinton

This experience was amazing and it makes you want to go back for more! Dion is very knowledgeable and Adele very welcoming. A lovely walk through native bush & you get plenty of time in the hide to watch the birds.Spoonbills and shags also nest there so you get more than expected. Already thinking about going back when the chick's start to hatch. The santuary is well looked after and Its a very relaxed place to be. Well worth the money.

We had the most wonderful afternoon kayaking on the lagoon. We don't usually choose guided tours but we are so glad we did. Must do on the West Coast! I had such an incredible time kayaking on the lagoon. Emily & Baz at Okarito Kayaks were super kind and helpful. They get you all hooked up, briefed and ready for an awesome time out on the water. The routes are really easy to follow, so anyone with some kayaking experience can feel comfortable getting out there. I really appreciated that freedom to explore solo, especially since I was lucky enough to have perfect weather for some great photos. All in all, definitely make plans to visit Okarito and book a kayak - beautiful nature and such great people!

We did the personal tour without a guide. Lots of great guidance from the staffs regardless. Everyone was friendly. We explored mashes and saw lots of birds. It was a breathtaking location and the experience ended with a free pot of coffee. I'd do it again. Watch out for the sand flies they suck and leave welts all over you. Bring your own environmentally friendly bug spray. The one they give you smells great but is really a placebo.

The West Coast has some of the most spectacular scenery in NZ and Okarito is one of its gems. The largest unspoiled wetland left in NZ, it is a place of amazing natural beauty with the Southern Alps as a backdrop. Barry & Gemma have an obvious passion for the lagoon and will quickly and safely have you on the water to explore the tidal creeks and inlets and a chance to see some of the amazing local birdlife. Peaceful & quiet it is an experience that will stay with you for a long time.

Thanks so much to the very knowledgeable team at Okarito Kayaks for giving me a head start on a quiet tidal creek of the lagoon and for the helpful marker poles and maps to show the way. Even in winter a paddle at Okarito is a very special experience and the coffee is great too!

The experience from beginning to end was absolutely amazing. If you are in the area and have a few hours you must go here. We visited in April and had such a lovely experience with all staff, they gave us a full brief of what to do and how to get the best out of our kayaking experience. It’s clear that it’s a family business that cares so much about the community and environment. It was fun, peaceful, we got to see some local wildlife and incredible views.

I had the absolute please of being taken out in a kayak by Megan last Monday, and it's one of the best experiences I have had on my travels in Aotearoa!
Megan has two things in abundance; facts and dad jokes. Her joyously infectious personality, Christmas cracker jokes, and truly remarkable depth of knowledge of the area and wildlife made it an incredibly special kayak trip across the lagoon. The huge conservation efforts going on in the area, particularly by the community (shout-out to the Horse Busters), gives a whole new respect visiting Okarito. Getting up close to a white heron is something I will never forget.
I hope more than anything to find myself there again one day.

We have just had a guided Kayak tour of the beautiful Ōkārito lagoon with Okarito Kayaks and it was brilliant.
Our first go at Kayaking, and our guide Emily was perfect. She showed massive patience with our first attempt on the water and was also really knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna.
The whole team at Okarito Kayaks were very friendly and as if that wasn’t enough, you can also get a great coffee/hot chocolate at their office!
We would thoroughly recommend this local team and what they offer.
Many thanks for such a great experience.

Our family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids) had a truly magical time doing the self guided 2 hour tour this morning with Ōkārito kayaks. We had a great safety briefing and talk about where to go, life jackets provided and very clear natural sign posting throughout the estuary. We experienced very intimate, up close time with several different Kōtuku and had a close encounter with the rare royal spoonbill, as well as seeing other smaller birds. The mirror reflections on the water were incredible. Back at base we had lovely complimentary hot drinks and bought some delicious homemade baking that was available to enjoy with our drinks. I totally recommend this experience for anyone wanting to get close to bird life. Absolutely worth every dollar and would do it again in a heartbeat.

A delightful, friendly, and very safe operation! Baz and Gemma are so knowledgeable and welcoming - we did the self-guided kayaking for 3-4 hours and had a wonderful time blissfully gliding on easy water ways, surrounded by birdsong and mountain views. Each kayak was outfitted with a map and a bird guide (my favorite part!). We came back to complimentary hot coffee and sat in the sun sipping it as we dried up - it was a perfect day. Okarito is by far the smallest town we visited in New Zealand (and most people had never heard of it) but it's charming and the drive there is beautiful! Well worth the detour. Baz also had great recommendations for other local campsites and sights to see, which we really appreciated. Highly recommend :)

Kayaking on the lagoon and river is a wonderful way to spend a few hours in Ōkaritō but more than that, the entire experience was superb because of the super friendly and professional service by Barry. He took the time to explain our options to us, go over the route, and to teach us the basics of kayaking before we set off. He is obviously very passionate about kayaking and about the area. When we finished he provided us with complimentary coffee. The experience was very relaxed and I highly recommend it if you’re in the area. I wish all businesses were like this one, our compliments to Barry.

Still can’t believe that we saw a kiwi in the wild last night - the very handsome Fancy! Absolutely incredible experience.
Ian is a phenomenal guide - the experience and passion just oozes out of him! So friendly and informative, and excellent at tracking kiwis! The night was a whole team effort and required a lot of patience and listening - which in itself is a brilliant experience. To be out in the NZ bush in the dark is an orchestra of wildlife!
Absolutely awestruck when we heard Fancy calling from afar, and then to see him 3-4m in front of us and crossing the track. An experience we will NEVER forget.

Really a must-do experience when you're in New Zealand (if you don't mind being patient and quiet for a couple of hours). We had an unforgettable evening with Ian in Okarito forest.
It's really nice that Ian prefers to only allow a very limited number of participants, which drastically increases the chance of seeing a kiwi. During our trip we were only 5, Ian included, and everyone was really motivated to be patient and very quiet. Ian really knows what to do to maximize the chance of seeing a kiwi (it's never 100% though) and we were very happy to spot Moss, the kiwi up close!
Thanks Ian for the beautiful experience!

It was a bit of a waiting game, but we had the very rarely seen Jim at our feet on the trail just after midnight. After having Fancy very close but called back by a call for mating activity. This trip is not for people not serious about seeing a kiwi and putting in a major effort. Sometimes it may be easy, other times not so much. Ian is strict with the rules and for good reason, and is very good at leading the tour. Highly recommended if you really want to see Okarito Kiwi.

The absolute highlight of our five-week NZ South Island trip. Before this we knew close to nothing about birds but this turned us into birders, we're so happy that we had this tour during the first week of our trip. It inspired us to look for birds and we really have. We've now seen the penguins, seals and sea lions, swam with the Hector's dolphins, hiked for hundreds of kilometers up and down, climbed via ferrata, visited the glaciers, kayaked in Golden Bay and Milford Sound, done horseback trekking etc. but it was this kiwi experience that we will cherish in our memories the most. Funnily enough this was also the least pleasant experience (for my wife at least, I personally found it super interesting and actually calming) – standing for hours while sleepy and having a serious need to pee surrounded by mosquitoes, listening, waiting... But as our guide Ian said, the bigger the effort the bigger the reward. It was fantastic to see Fancy in the absolute darkness finally in the middle of the night. Thank you. PLEASE NOTE: You don't need to know anything about birds to enjoy this! We didn't!

What a fantastic experience! Ian was a wonderful guide who prepared us well. We were really lucky, there was a lot of activity going on. You need to be patient for sure but in the end we could observe a kiwi at a distance of about 10-15 meters. A few minutes later the same kiwi popped out of the bush just in front of us! It was an amazing experience I will keep in mind forever!

We were blessed to both hear and catch multiple sightings of Frosty and also hear Moss, two male rowi's. I appreciated so many things about the tour: on top of the magical dream come true to see kiwis in their own habitat, the way Ian built us up as a team and facilitated the group coordination was really neat! Plus my partner and I, as introverts, found it super refreshing to be in a group of people that were all practicing being quiet together. It was lovely beyond words, literally! We are coming back for more the next time we return to the South Island, ngā mihi nui!

We achieved the "Impossible" last night and observed a baby Kiwi in the wild! What an amazing experience! My partner and I were in a group 7 (all mid 20's - 30's) Our guide Ian united us as a team and his wit and humour made eveyone feel at ease. We all worked together to transverse a beautiful forest path (quietly!).. splitting up at times but never too far from each other and equipped with torches and radios.
As a biologist I admired Ian's knowledge and love for the birds, if you want to see kiwis in their natural habitat then this is a must. Be prepared to stand quietly in the dark for a few hours if necessary, as Ian says there are no garruntees but that's nature for you. We were incredibly lucky. Thank you Ian from the Irish gang!

Franz Josef / Waiau, situated in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island, is a small town surrounded by prominent locations. Whataroa lies to its north-east at a distance of 32 kilometres while Fox Glacier is positioned 23 kilometres away towards the south-west. It takes about seven hours to reach Franz Josef Glacier from this town, which adds up as an extended drive.
West Coast Wildlife Centre is a family-friendly wildlife center with kiwi birds on display, a glacier attraction & guided tours. The center has been praised for its high quality of care for the animals and its excellent education programs.

Really great experience and a Franz Josef must do.
The conservation work that this facility does for kiwis is fantastic. Would strongly recommend doing the behind the scenes tour, even if there are no chicks - it's super interesting.
Our guide Devon was so passionate and informative, he's a credit to the centre. The kiwi in the nocturnal room have a great setup. The female is sleepy and relaxed, whilst the male runs around quite happily.
They are much easier to see once your eyes have adjusted, but if you still can't spot them, staff will point them out under a red light torch.
The tuatara are surprisingly really cute, and their history and origin is really interesting. Got to see a baby one which was really sweet, and the rest in the main pen are fun to observe.
Staff excellent and friendly - would recommend a visit.

The experience was exciting and informative! Its great to see such great conservation efforts from this wildlife centre. We got the VIP pass and were shown around by Devin. He was very polite and knowledgeable and taught us alot about the excellent programs going into saving the endangered kiwis as well as a history into them.
I would highly recommend going to see the Kiwis in the morning! We heard from Devin that youre much more likely to see them then as this is when they're eating and most active and he was right! We came a second time and saw a kiwi eating, play in their water, and walk around the enclosure.
We were also lucky enough to see a tuatara up close during our VIP tour and gave it a *very* gentle pet on his back.
Would definitely recommend!

Having read some of the reviews, we were in two minds about whether to visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre. I’m SO glad we did! It was quiet when we visited, so we were the only people in the Kiwi room, and we ages happily watching the two very active kiwis. Having seen kiwis previously in another location behind glass, having no glass barrier between them and us was AMAZING! Just a low fence between us and them. It was also great to know that the two we saw would shortly be released into the wild - added an extra dimension to know that our entry fee was actively going towards their conservation! We felt we more than got value for money (we even went back for a second look before leaving - and had we wanted to, the ticket allowed us to return the next day for another look). We also loved seeing the tuataras and learning all about the kiwi conservation, Predator Free 2050, the glaciers and the local community. I feel as though some of the previous reviewers have been unrealistic in their expectations. Go expecting to need to engage with more than just seeing a kiwi! It’s about much more than that!

Very cool to be able to see 2 kiwi without glass. They swapped day and night inside so the kiwi are active at our daytime.
Very friendly staff. We came back a second time and enjoyed both days. The shop has nice things, as has the cafe.

In a word, outstanding. After reading some reviews, I was in two minds whether to bother with this attraction. I’m glad I did though. The ability to get up and close to a kiwi, with no glass in between, was fantastic. Our encounter with a kiwi in the wild on Stewart Island lasted no more than 30 seconds. Here we were no more than a metre or so away for 20 mins+, you are so close you can hear them rummaging though the leaves. Well worth it.
Ian Glass — Google review
Pretty expensive for what it was but may be your only chance to peep a kiwi. The kiwi habitat was extremely dark so if you have issues with night vision and need glasses in low light conditions I HIGHLY suggest bringing them. No photos or videos of the kiwis are allowed.
I'm glad I saw them but my fave was the tuatara! Such a unique reptile. Unlike lizards they have a vertical pupil which I thought was cool as heck (they have other amazing characteristics but I don't want to spoil it for anyone!).
The rest of the place was educational and mostly related to the animals present in alpine NZ, pest species threatening the alpine regions and the various properties and presentations of glacial ice. Great place to nerd out.

Very cool that you get to see the rarest species of kiwi! The two chicks that had recently gotten big enough to be brought up to the observation area were very cute, active, & easy to watch. I’m so glad this important work is being done to breed these endangered birds and reintroduce them to the wild. There’s a really good chance to see tuatara as well here. Worth the price for sure.

An educationally meaningful conservation center provides an opportunity to get up close with the rarest Rowi kiwi birds. Currently, the conservation center has two of these birds, whose lively and busy figures are truly adorable in the dark. For ecology enthusiasts, whether as a backup plan for glacier hiking cancellations or a special arrangement to visit, it is highly recommended.

Enjoyable experience. Book online for $2 off, got to see 2 kiwi's and learned about Glaciers + how West Coasters live. Nice gift store at the end.

We had a rainy morning in Franz Josef and were so glad to stumble upon the West Coast Wildlife Centre! It was so exciting to see two endangered Rowi kiwis, as well as learn about them and other wildlife and nature in the area. (I didn't take any photos indoors, but here are some nice photos of Franz Josef!)

We were on a Gate 1 Tour and this was one of our stops. It was a great experience. The guy that talked to us , Steve was exceptional! He gave us the history of NZ and the Kiwi bird and spent a lot of time answering every question. It was fantastic. We even got to see the Kiwi! What a thrill. Big beautiful bird. Thank you so much for the exceptional experience. The gift show is cool, too. Everyone there was wonderful. I forgot the lizards! Wow!

Best experience with Kiwi we have had, literally so close, I could watch them for hours and listen to their wee noises. Also not too busy like other places who house kiwi. Bit on the dearer side but knowing the money is going towards conservation of native NZ animals makes it worth it. Very friendly staff, and very cool that they can come in with a red light to see the kiwi even clearer.

Had a wonderful hour listening to Steve at the VIP tour, he is so passionate and the staff are all so lovely! It might not feel worth an extra $20 for everyone but seeing as it goes to saving the kiwis it feels more than worth every cent. Also super to actually see two kiwi birds running around, and learn that they get the zoomies when they’re excited! 🥹 Very impressed with the team’s work and knowledge, 10/10.

Not that interesting the one and only kiwi seemed to be suffering from zoochosis ie repetitive behaviour pacing in the same spots. Understand that the enclosure needs to be dark to make the animal think it's night time so that visitors can actually sort of see a kiwi albeit not very easily.
I should have done a bit more research re what the place actually is I thought the title indicated a cross section of animals from new Zealand rather than just the two species.
So in conclusion yes great to just about see a kiwi but having only the two species made for a disappointing visit

Thanks guys, you are doing some really important work and the results speak for themselves.
It's great to see the dedication and love for the conservation cause.
This place is responsible for rearing and protecting hundreds of kiwi and tuatara.
Staff were lovely and knowledgeable.

I've been to heaps of kiwi exhibits in NZ and this is by far the best! The kiwi room has dim light for the health of the birds. You cN clearly see the kiwi moving about as the enclosures are longish and narrower than others I have been to. The kiwi were very active. Lunch was nice, and there is a good gift/souvenir shop.

Spectacular flight over Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. Well organised and professional.

Was a very enjoyable experience, felt safe the whole time and the snow landing was awesome. The only let down is that we were initially booked to fly Fox Glacier on an afternoon flight, except all flights were cancelled that day due to weather. We did not get informed of this until we went to check in, and if that was the case then there is no reason they couldn't have informed us in advance.

If you are going to do one thing in New Zealand, this is it. Just amazing experience standing on top of a moving Glacier. Rainbow covered clouds and glitter covered snow. Great crew and pilot Richard who gave a truly skilled and safe, smooth ride.

Great flight, very smooth and the pilot was very informative. If its a good day, highly recommend even for those who have never been in a helicopter before, do it - you wont regret it!

Excellent customer service and communication in regards to safety requirements + the flight. The pilot was really knowledgeable about the history, geography, and geology of the area giving interesting information about the glacier and surrounding areas, overall a great experience :)

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS!!! Quite possibly top 3 thing I've done in my life along with getting married and ziplining in a pitch black cave! Y'all were awesome, kind, great at explaining safety! Thank you for getting us on a ride last minute and keeping our safety in mind when you DIDN'T land on the glacier in the rain (I'm too young to die!!!)! Thank you thank you!!!

What an incredible experience...worth every penny. The flight over both glaciers was breathtaking with a perspective and scenery you could never see any other way. Pilot was really informative and captured a great pic of us on the snow landing.
Highly recommend for bucket list experience!

Very well run helicopter rides. Looked very safe. Awesome ride. Take off from owners backyard. 6 person (includind pilot) helicopter, so 4 at the back and two forward. Ample viewing opportunities for all passengers of the mountains and the glaciers. The landing on the Glacier was the "icing" on the cake. Lovely experience, although quite expensive.

Oh Wow!! I could not ask for a better pilot than : "Simon" This pilot put us in the most beautiful locations and aerial spectacles you could ever imagine!! The Franz Josef Glacier has to be seen from the air to fully appreciate the grandeur and strength of this natural phenomenon! Do yourself a favour, and witness this natural wonder for yourself and a loved one!!
