How lovely! Beautifully maintained property full of magic and thoroughly entertaining. The tour guides are so knowledgable about the house and to see the house used in her books is wondrous! The garden is the cherry on the cake. I would have gone to the cafe but went to the pub instead for a cheeky feeling good pint!

Wonderful place to visit especially if you are a Beatrix Potter fan. House kept as she left it, with all her own belongings inside. Fantastic to see originals of books and letters. Staff give brief history of house before entering and are placed around the house, available for questions. Vegan food truck available in the gardens with lots of cakes, pastries, ice-creams and beverages. Booking is a must, as given an alloted time slot due to small parking facility and size of property. Gardens as pictured in the books. Attention to detail and references to books and illustrations throughout. A must see!!

Time travel is real! How did Beatrix Potter leave behind her legacy so timelessly? I'm not sure, but I'm so glad she did. I'm pretty sure I saw Tom Kitten scurrying off around the garden. Thank you to all who have preserved her story telling and inspiration, Hill Top. My only wish would be to have found Jemima Puddle-duck's sixth missing egg. Well hidden, my Friends!!

Lovely people, calming atmosphere. Beautiful house and gardens. Very well maintained. The guidebook is well worth buying. Loved the gifts in the shop but gutted we didn't get chance to go in the little book nook before that closed.

Miss Potter's house with many original interiors. Small garden area to sit too. Gift shop with some Potter gifts. No tea room. Tickets have to be booked in advance so check on website.

This is one of the most amazing places we've visited. Unbelievable step back in time to Beatrix Potters house exactly how she left it. Book online before you go or you won't get in, Get there early as parking is limited (about 30 spaces) short walk through the village to the house. There is a small refreshments shed at the bottom of the garden selling, tea, coffee, cajes etc and benches to sit and reflect It doesn't take long to get around the house and gardens but it is well worth a visit and is now my favourite NT place to visit.

Really lovely place, even in the rain! We actually walked up from the chain ferry which we caught up from Ferry Nab carpark. Once you get off its very well signposted and as you go you take in Claife viewing station. The signposts say its 4 miles but we think those are cumbria miles as we thought it was further! The house itself was lovely. Very charming. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. You can park there but I would imagine it was very busy in the holidays.

Literally one of the highlights of my trip in the Lake District. I loved the area and I love the house. It’s like walking into someone’s imagination and seeing the creations come to life. I learned a lot about Beatrix Potter and gained a greater understanding of the writer and the books. The guides are super helpful and insightful you could ask them any questions. The one guide in the upstairs room to the left was so kind. We had a great conversation about Potter, the society and art during her life. It was really great to speak to people who are so passionate about history. Tip: book ahead Also they have a great coffee cart outside and the toilets are clean.

Book in advance and arrive earlier if you want to get parked. Otherwise you may have to park further down the road and the spaces truly are limited. The house is a true gem. When we arrived, the fireplace was on 🔥 We have learned a lot about Beatrix Potter and I can understand why she left London for the Lake District 💚 Love the Peter Rabbit tales!

Wonderful, you can actually feel her presence in the rooms, and the location was inspirational, no wonder she loved it there. Can't wait to revisit in the summer to see the garden in all its glory, as a national trust member we walked straight in, pre booking is advisable as it has limited parking

Fascinating place and every one of the National Trust staff and guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. We went about midday in the middle of March, definitely booking ahead is advised because parking spaces were limited!

This is definitely a must-visit spot. Definitely if you are familiar with Beatrix Potter and her famous children books (Peter the Rabbit) but also if you are not. It’s highly recommended to buy tickets in advance. There is also some tickets available for walk-ins but these are few.

Fantastic visit as it was really quiet and the caretakers were able to spend time explaining with a true passion each room to us fascinating to see the furniture as it was when she was there and to understand what a switched on lady she was right down to the merchandise display from the 1930/40s recommend a visit it of season but the walled garden will be a little bare even before Peter rabbit has visited

A wonderful insight to the wonderful world of Beatrix Potter and the inspiration for many of her books, seeing where the national trust was really born. The house is most home, full of Beatrix's things, you can see she really would have lived here. Parking is a short walk away with a walk along the road to the house, but all perfectly signed, be warned the road doesn't have a footpath. Lovely little shop, and a nice garden to wander it sit and ponder in, several things for children to do as well with Peter rabbit and friends weaved into the garden. And if you have a national trust passport well worth getting it stamped here! If you don't have a passport worth getting one to find out why!

Famous 19 th century writers house If you have the National trust pass you can park and enter free. Nice experience for the young children If you are traveling around Lake District recommend place to visit.

Honestly I don’t understand everyone’s obsession with this place. Such a kafafle to visit such a small place. Had to attempt 3 times to get there, one because there was no parking, second because there was no parking and also because, by the time we found parking, our slots passed and we gave up. We returned the third time and realised we could have visited other, more interesting places in all the time we lost trying to get in here. The reason for the 4 stars is , firstly the staff was very nice and helpful, secondly, their stamps are like no other. Wasn’t impressed by the place tho.

This is a very beautiful place. If you are a Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit fan, this is definitely a bucket list item. You can observe that the intro of Peter Rabbit cartoon was filmed in this very cottage. Even the garden and the roadside were included. I was overwhelmed by its similarity to the cartoon. You should book in advance. Toilets are available at the property and not in the tickets office

We booked our tickets in advance with our National Trust membership card because you can’t visit without a booking. The parking was a bit away from the house and we had to walk for 2-3 minutes. It wasn’t easy with the car and muddy road. The house is lovely and it’s interesting to see how she used to live here. The garden is also nice but it’s overall very small. We spent 40 minutes and we saw everything I think. But it is worth it if you like Beatrix Potter.

A bit of a walk through the village (with no pavement) to get there from the carpark/ticket office. The house is so cozy and lovely and full of Beatrix's actual things. It's full of information and just a nice house! Really worth visiting if you're a fan (but maybe not if you're too little to enjoy furniture). Went in early March but imagine the gardens are beautiful on the summer. Staff so friendly!

This was a joy to visit! They have an outdoor cafè, toilets and a gift shop. The carpark is not very big, and it's a few minute's walk to the propert from the carpark, so NT asks you to book a time slot for your visit. The village is small with 1 pub, in the summer you will struggle to park here. They do except walk ups on days that are not very busy. Enjoy.

The castle sits in a breathtaking valley with views at a stunning mountain scenery. You can get into the castle, however booking tickets is recommended. If you are member of the National Trust parking and entry is free. The castle is not really large and parking can be a challenge. When we visited, there were various empty rooms downstairs accessible and regular tours for the upstairs rooms. The wooden staircase in the hall is impressive. There is a little cafe in the back.

Pleasant place where to spend your time on a sunny day. A lot of visitors but did not feel crowded as most of them exploring different walks and paths of estate. Castle itself quite impressive, good cafe, facilities, car park.

The castle is great to look at from the outside as it is visually stunning. Although only 2 rooms on the ground floor currently showing photograph exhibitions. The upstairs is currently closed for repair work. As such there is very little to see. Has toilets. The beauty and enjoyment comes from the various walking routes from the castle. There is a cafe on site serving food and drinks. All day parking is £9 or free if NT member.

Really enjoyable visit. Ground floor of the castle is free to visit. Plenty of walks to enjoy, areas to sit and picnic. A cafe on site with indoor and outdoor seating areas. Parking charges do apply, but we have national trust card so was free for our visit.

Very nice view on both sides of the castle, one side lake view, other side mountain view. Stunning mountain view even when snow on peaks. Unfortunately we couldn't get inside castle because is closed in winter time. However was worth to go there.

A lovely location and a gorgeous building with, in time, huge potential. But I stress *in time*. On the day we visited (7 Sept 22) the site was undergoing major renovation, so only the downstairs was open — and every room there was empty (apart from a room with a few photos by Beatrix Potter's father). There's also a rather sad cafe which serves *only* vegan food and some kind of plant-based confection that tastes almost, but not quite, entirely unlike ice cream. The views from the grounds are very pretty but you can see all that without paying £6 a person. Give Wray Castle a miss until the Trust are finished with it and go to Tarn Hows (or just for a nice walk) instead.

Nice place for a couple of hour visit, easy walk around the castle and along Windermere lake. Cafe is great, serves vegan cakes which was a treat for my dairy allergic smallest child. Recommend a visit.

Love this place. Beautiful scenery and lovely walks but it never seems to be open when we go. We even checked online first but when we got there the castle was closed to visitors that day. There is a cafe and toilet there which is handy and plenty of places to sit if you have a packed lunch too. You also have to pay £5 to park, so check it's open before you pay the parking.

The castle itself is a really quirky building, and the photo gallery they currently have on display provides interesting insights into the lives of the family that built it. On my visit, the upper floors were closed off to the public, and some of the ground floor rooms were empty and unadorned, which was a shame, as it meant there wasn't much to explore inside. The grounds are beautiful, however - the church, arboretum, boat house - and the landscapes are as dramatic as you would expect of such a picturesque destination.

I think it’s one of the nicest castles I’ve visited in the UK. The castle’s maintenance is really good. It’s in good condition. The national trust has done a really good job. We went on a weekday so it wasn’t crowded. Entrance inside the castle is free. If you’re in Lake District, do check this place out.

First visit and we decided to travel as passengers on car ferry. After a visit to Claife Viewing Station (gorgeous views) we decided to walk to Wray Castle 😮 8 miles there and back but well worth it for the experience and the views. Very much needed a drink at Joe's cafe 🥛☕. Unfortunately, Castle is closed until March

Visiting on a rainy day was a good idea and having a national trust member was a plus. Due to renovation there was not much to see for this time. We were just able to see through the first floor only in the little castle. There was a guided tour for the second floor but did not fit with our time and we just visited the castle first floor and around. It had an amazing view of mountains. You will really fall in love and would not want to leave the place. Plenty of paid parking and toilets.

Amazing place. Quite the road to get to though. We ended up ordering coffee in the café, going down to the lake and had a picnic there. Once the rain started we went inside the castle. Which was never build and used as a castle as such. Go there. Learn for yourselves. Dogs are not allowed inside the building itself but everywhere else they are welcome.

Wray Castle is an absolute gem in the heart of the Lake District. Although currently the upstairs isn't available for visitors, the admission is free to compensate for that, which is a nice gesture. The architecture of the castle is stunning and the surrounding area is even more breathtaking. A walk around the castle grounds offers incredible views of Lake Windermere that are not to be missed. Additionally, there was a photograph exhibition featuring photographs from the latter 1800's from the area which was a great way to get a glimpse into the past and see how much (and how little) the area has changed over time. Overall, it was a fantastic day out and highly recommended for anyone visiting the area or for locals looking for a lovely day out. Despite the restriction to the upstairs, there is still plenty to see and enjoy, making it well worth a visit.

A nice little visit, some great views a perfect little cafe for a drink or quick bite. Walks surrounding the castle and it's free to enter. Parking starts at £4 for an Hr free for national trust members. Worth a quick visit on the way round the lake.

Worth a trip if you are in the area. There was a photo gallery in a couple of the rooms which was good but I feel the National Trust could do more than this as a few rooms are just empty. Some general information about the castle and the area would be good. You can walk down to the lake also.

Wray Castle is a Lovely castle with Great history. The staff are Friendly and informative. Wray Castle is Being renovated at present, some of the rooms empty at present, so maybe 4 stars right now? There were two displays. One was interactive for children, with a tent for them to dive into and a yaght for them to sit in, which was great fun. I'm sure it will be 5 stars when it's all renovated as it is a lovely space and impressive building. There are walks to explore, woods and a lovely view of the lake. There is also a quirky cafe at the rear of the site.

Dropped in because the weather looked ominous and it's somewhere you can see in an hour or so. Really interesting displays in the castle and the views outside are amazing when the light hits the mountains and lake. Decent coffee shop and not too pricey.

Visited with the family. Enjoyed the grounds and main building. Pity upstairs wasn't opened to view. But we enjoyed the visit. Cafe on site

A wonderful helpful member of staff greeted us and showed us where we could park our motorhome given that we had missed the very large sign saying no motorhomes! He explained that motorhomes were usually able to park on the main road beyond the castle if there is sufficient space (immediately before entering the arch entrance). Blue Badge and National Trust members park free.

During winter the castle is closed, but the access to the grounds is free of charge. You have to pay for the parking, though, unless you do not hold a National Trust membership. The castle itself it is not so old, but nevertheless it is interesting from the architectural point of view. The lake is 5 walking minutes away from the castle and the views are very nice and the walk itself is very pleasant.

A great castle with lots of history, I enjoyed all the old photos, taken around the same time but from 2 completely different prospectives. Only slight negative would be the fact we weren't allowed to explore upstairs which looked really interesting. And it's free 👍🏻

Majestic Castle situated in a great position. Over winter the castle is closed but the grounds are free. The cafe however is open all year. Please pay for the parking - it’s a not for profit organisation that goes toward the maintenance of the Grand Castle

Beautiful location with easy access. Road itself is nice and beautiful. Castle has no ticket but you can't enter the main building. Other than the cafe that is almost inside the castle. Parking space is quiet big and cheap. Beautiful sceneries all around, specially the lake view point on the back and the meadows on the front side...

A lot of trees down around Breasty Haw bridleway after Storm Arwen, but otherwise not too bad. Parkamoor descent access is clear now if a bit rutted and boggy from the big forestry machinery that's been clearing over the last few days. The views across Coniston to the old Man and Dow Crags are amazing.

If you are after a family bike ride there are much better places in the Lakes than the endless slog up boring forest roads you will find here (and a very very pricy car park to boot). A missed opportunity when compared to the trails in many other Forestry England operations. A lot of the tech trails are still closed nearly a year after storm Arwen and most are just too hard for a family. My recomendation - start at Hawkshead (bike rental avail) and go via Route 6 to Wray Castle and optionally down Windermere to Claife viewpoint. 98% offroad. Track meanders through a beautiful landscape of fields, tarns, woods and lakes.

We went to Grizedale for some mountain biking (with our own bikes). Grizedale is undoubtedly great for gravel riding, but for decent single-track mountain biking there is really only one option, which is the red North Face Trail. Sadly, big chunks of the route are still closed after last winter's storms. It's a bit disappointing that so much of this route is still awaiting repair, given that there's only one trail to maintain. We still had fun, and the trail is enjoyably techy and interesting (good if you like natural riding, not so good if you're into smooth berms and jumps!). Luckily we're based quite locally and knew there was storm damage, but I would have been hugely disappointed if I'd made a big trip for it. Whinlatter is a much better mtb trail centre if you're here for your holidays, as it has fully-maintained blue and red routes as well as gravel tracks.

There are some lovely walks here, and a good playground, but the car parking seems to be relatively expensive, a covered picnic area we used had filthy tables and litter at 11 in the morning and, without any prior indication, the waymarked trail (blue) that we took with our children (5 and 7) necessitated a precipitous and unmarked diversion because the trail was taped off at a bridge. Feels as though the place needs a little more love and attention.

Went to wrong parking place ended up climbing up side of forest but only came across 2 sets of bikers which was good for my kids and dogs. Would definitely reccomend for a hike,ride or dog walk just make sure you have tic protection and my dogs came out and home with friends.

Used to come here years ago and it was brilliant. Not now!! On a 6+ ml walk only saw two pathetic sculptures and the paths were badly marked. The cafe was closed but go ape still managed to pull in the punters. Needs some upgrading and more fun things to do. What happened to the fantastic shop?

My father and I went for a cycle on the North Face red route. Much to our disappointment we got 3 tire puncturs which completely depleted our will and energy to cycle. (I can almost guarantee you will come out of the forest with a flat tire or 2 or 3 or 4). Apart from that the trials were very fun, just need a lot more care!

We booked prior to our visit and made sure we left 1.5 hrs earlier. Still managed to arrive just in time. We did the tree top adventure with our 6 and 8 year olds. They both felt challenged and pushed them to their limits. The staff were friendly and made sure to ask if we were having a good time. My daughter got scared on second level and Andy who was really great at navigating and encouraged her took his time with her. Great team of staff and a very challenging tree top. We did get very dirty but its all part of it. Thanks everyone.

Ziplining at Go Ape in Grizedale, nestled in the breathtaking Lake District, was an absolute thrill! My wife, two friends, and I embarked on this adventure, and it exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we arrived, the outstanding service provided by the staff, Alex and Emily, truly set the tone for the day. Their expertise, professionalism, and friendly demeanor made us feel not only safe but also excited to soar through the treetops. The ziplining experience itself was nothing short of incredible. We found ourselves suspended amidst the lush green canopy, with the stunning Lake District landscape as our backdrop. The adrenaline rush as we zoomed from one platform to another was simply electrifying. The course was impeccably maintained, and safety was clearly a top priority. We left Go Ape Grizedale with our spirits soaring, hearts racing, and unforgettable memories etched in our minds. If you're seeking an adventure that combines adrenaline-pumping excitement with the natural beauty of the Lake District, I wholeheartedly recommend this activity. Absolutely brilliant experience zip-trekking with Go Ape. We had the morning slot and there were 10 people in total in the group. We were taken in a van up to the top of the hill for zip 1 and then gradually made our way down on 8 different zip lines. I would say we were out for about 2 hours, there isn't much walking in between the zips and the last one brings you back to the hub near enough. We had Will and Rob as our instructors and they were great! They kept things entertaining and made sure we were safe (although the onus is on you to make sure you're doing everything you should). We did have one lady who really struggled to carry on due to the height and the guys were great and organised for her to be taken back down. The speed is amazing and although I never managed to land on my feet once, I felt really safe and had such a good time. It seemed to be really busy when we got back some time around 1pm so the morning was definitely the right choice. The treetop adventure was jam-packed by the time we were walking out. I would definitely recommend this activity and I got a little discount through 'Discounts for Teachers' which is worth knowing.

We done the treetop challenge which is 6 sections. We booked for the 11:30 slot which had 12 people in the group. Our instructor Sam was very good. A few challenges on the course had ropes so be careful you don’t get rope burns . The zip wire at the end of stage 3 & stage 4 are brilliant. I went for the extreme route on stage 6 which was fun . Take some sugary sweets to give you an energy boost. It took us about 2 & half hours to complete. Parking only cost us £5.70 . This course is much better than my local one ( Alice Holt ) . My 18yo & 16yo daughters loved it . Money well spent

Took 5, age 7 girls , the staff were great, very patient, and helpful.. The girls had a fantastic time it was great to hear them all helping each other out and giving each other encouragement. They all said it was the best thing they had done and want to go back soon. They loved the zip wires 😂

Absolutely amazing experience doing the treetop challenge at go ape! Such an amazing date idea. It helps too boost confidence, test your strength and test your bravery! Opt in for the extreme Tarzan swing you’ll feel so proud of yourself!

We had an absolutely brilliant day. There was a little delay due to thunder so we just went and had a drink in the cafe whilst it passed. Staff were really nice and kept us updated. We will definitely be coming back next year to try the bigger ones.

Great staff as always, really friendly and incredibly helpful and understanding in every instance. The health and safety is also very good and not too dull. Love coming here. You get to do a lot for the price too.

Children were taken here by a friend, they loved it and were all super tired in the end. The whole experience took around 3 hours. Parking and cafe both super expensive so bring your own refreshments.

Enjoyed our afternoon her. The kids really loved the Zog trail and the walk up to the view point. There seems to be lots of good MTB trails that we will try next time we’re here. Our three little ones also liked the play park too.. would recommend. Parking it probably a little on the high side.

Amazing experience! Me with group of friends definitely enjoyed our time in Go Ape. It was raining all the time but it doesn't affected our tree top challenge. Staff is very caring and friendly. 10/10!

Came today with my little lad we did the tree top adventure plus. £28 each and the was 4 different courses leading to a zip line down. Was OK would come back and do the big zip lines next time. Only downside was having to walk back to the same start point after each one felt abit repetitive. Paying for parking is abit of a joke aswel after paying all that money! Staff where super friendly and helpful 👍

Love this place, great place for all the family wether all doing activities or simply having a picnic. Plenty choices. Plenty parking/over spill parking. Easy to pay parking machines on exit. Bike hire- although no easy trail here, they vary from hard to extreme. The downside is the cafe. To be really honest I'd rather drink pond water than pay £2.20 for a bottle of it and other drinks only get more expensive. BRING YOUR OWN. Other than that the activities, whist expensive, are good fun and worth doing and there are plenty of people/workers up high overseeing everyone's safety and are very helpful.

Fantastic day out with the kids. Car park not too expensive. Easier to get to if you come from the south entrance rather than the north by Windermere which has lots of little narrow roads. Recommend the adventure plus course.

Staff members were absolutely spot on. Alex was a great instructor and the lady behind the counter was lovely. We did the treetop challenge course; it was enjoyable but maybe a little short compared to some others we’ve done. We finished the course in about 1hr15 min which made it not the best value for money. There is a few little shops selling handmade items on the site and a cafe which is lovely but the parking was extremely expensive so we didn’t want to hang around too long.

Go Ape Grizedale exceeded my expectations. Initially, I had made a reservation for the Segway activity with my friends. However, due to exceeding the weight limit, the staff graciously accommodated us by transferring our booking to the Tree Top Challenge. Surprisingly, this alternative was £6 cheaper per person, and they assured us of a refund. The Tree Top Challenge proved to be quite demanding, leaving us questioning our decision to participate, yet simultaneously urging us to push ourselves further and complete the course. Regardless of the choices you make during the experience, it is undoubtedly a worthwhile endeavor. The exhilarating long zip wires, creatively designed challenges, and helpful marshals create an unforgettable adventure. If you happen to be in the area or around, I highly recommend checking out this exceptional venue.

From Hilltop, we walked three miles, but the museum is closed. But it was good to see the site in the picture book in person. This is Potter's husband's lawyer's office. Wordsworth's Grammar School, where he attended from age 9 to 17, and the church can be seen from the bus stop. Toilets here are clean and card-accessible, although there is a charge. There is a lovely shop and pub, reachable by the 505 bus.

If we would know that there is only few pictures of Beatrix work and only few interesting facts about her we wouldn't go there. If not free national trust access with the national trust card we would never go there. If we would it would be a great waste of money. The children were extremely bored. The journey through I think 6-8 rooms we went within 15 minutes. No, sorry but this is an extremely commercial place.

Great little place to enjoy some Beatrix Potter stories. Perfect for older children as there is a game to look for the answers, however there is beautiful little corner with drawing and playing area for little ones. Great deal for National Trust members, both House and Gallery free which can save a lot of money!

A wonderful and quaint building with a very olde world feel. It isn't a large gallery at all, but the pieces on display and the environment they're in combine to create an enjoyable experience. Apparently, the art on display is changed regularly, so what's on display when you arrive may not be on display again for another 10 years to protect the items from light damage. This means that future visits should result in being able to view different examples of Potter's art. Although I thought the price of admission quite high for the small amount of art on display, the fact it's on display in the offices of William Heelis, Potter's eventual husband, made it a genuine experience, hence the 5 stars. I would go again, if only to observe the next rotation of Potter's paintings and letters.

Currently highlighting Beatrix Potter's floral illustrations. Worth it if you're a National Trust member, though I'm not sure if children would find it as interesting. I'd call ahead as the gallery was closed earlier this week due to staff shortage. I've been told it's hard to get in during the morning so booking is advised, however the afternoons are more accommodating for drop-ins which is what we did. There's no immediate parking so you will need to park in the village pay & display car park (£3 for up to 2hrs). You can collect a National Trust Passport stamp at the entrance if you ask. Very limited gift stand, I'd recommend the 'Peter Rabbit and Friends' gift shop and 'Chocolate Factory' (both next to the car park) if you want to buy gifts and merchandise. No toilets, but the car park has some for 50p (cash/contactless).

Really enjoyed visiting and staff are friendly and knowledgeable, able to answer all our questions. Can see exactly where Beatrix drew inspiration from in the beautiful gardens and surrounding areas.

When I think of the Lakes ,i think of Hawkshead,I have been visiting this village for over forty-five years, even stayed here on our honeymoon, it's always a pleasure to revisit this wonderful Lake District village.

Great gallery, very traditional! Staff were very friendly and helpful always willing to give you more info. The gallary isnt pram friendly as its very small but the staff allowed us to leave our pram in the ticket office and carry our 10month old baby.

One of the easiest and quickest hikes in the lake district but without compromising the views from the summit. Multiple trails for all types of hikers. Family and pet friendly too.

Dog friendly walk near Ambleside and suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness. The initial climb is steep but not too long You can park on the road that runs along the brook. Take the first right as you come over the hump bridge from Ambleside. Arrive early as there is limited parking. Once onto the fell there are easy paths to follow or just follow the bridal way in a circular route stopping off for a dip at Grasmere water then head up the steps to the top of the fell before heading back down the many paths towards the start.

A moderately hard climb in Lake District. Would be good for a beginner in my opinion, and able to give a really beautiful view of the scenery. The view was beautiful even though it was drizzling. I would recommend getting the right outfits, shoes and bags for hiking. Give yourself some time to walk as well (we took 3+ hours up from Ambleside and down at White Moss).

Walking from Ambleside was absolutely beautiful with the autumnal colours and fantastic scenery personally I would highly recommend a visit 👍

Great stroll up Loughrigg Fell this morning. Views were amazing. Good first step towards attempting "Old Man, Coniston".

Spectacular. Stunning. What a great walk. Started in Ambleside this morning ended up at the summit then decided to continue on over the other side and down to Grasmere. The sky was clear and the views of the fells, Windermere and Grasmere were fantastic. There are some steeper bits, however nothing to crazy if it’s not wett and you take your time. Good idea non the less to bring a rucksack. Wiry a jacket, some snack and water. Highly recommend this walk. After having lunch in Ambleside the bus ride back to Ambleside was welcome. That being set a cab would have been less expensive for four of us without a day pass for the buss. So get a buss pass!! Saves you money. Took a refreshing swim in Grasemere before a nice pub lunch. A little walk about town was warranted before our return trip to Ambleside.

Starting from Ambleside town, Loughrigg Fell offers stunning views and a manageable hike. We followed the River Rothay, encountering some steeper sections towards the top. Looping around the back, we descended to Ambleside for a well-deserved lunch and beer. The 10km route took about 2 hours, including a few stops. Perfect for easy to moderate fitness levels, this hike provides a delightful mix of scenery and challenge.

Another small but classic Wainwright fell Various paths to get to the top and various starting points as well Excellent views from the top on a clear day, most of the route is easily navigable, a few rocky parts but attainable for most abilities Well worth the walk with great views of surrounding fells and Rydal Water Lovely trig point on top as well

A day out on Loughrigg fell. views of Grasmere , Rydal water, Windermere and mountains. what a walk. Stopping to eat packed lunch it took about four hours to do just under 7 miles. Once passed the cave and rounding the fell you get away from the tourists and feel the history embracing you.

If you have the energy it's worth the hike to get the best view of Lake Windermere. A 30 - 40 minute hike to the top. Not too difficult and the path is well worn. The views at the top are spectacular. We hiked up on a Friday evening. Only people up there! Peace, quite and beauty all round.

Stunning hike, the scenery is out of this world. Absolutely breathtaking views of the lakes! Moderate difficulty, some sections are very steep and rough, proper gear such as hiking shoes with ankle support and poles recommended. Come prepared and allow enough time, start early in the day rather than later!

I have to say that we had a great day here. We took the boat to Wray Castle and the views were spectacular. We took our dog on board and she loved the experience, if you do this just make sure you consider the other passengers as not everyone likes dogs. There is a great shop nearby, the owner will fuss your dog and give you great advice. The only negative is that things don't open till 10am so if you get there early for parking you might have to walk around a bit.

I love Ambleside. The pier area is charming even in the rain. The walk through the Roman ruins was also very nice. Kids loved feeding the ducks too

Beautiful views from here especially in the sunset. Lake is really clean with boats surrounded the pier and lot of different birds. U can buy bird food i local pet shop for 1,5£. Enjoy the place :)

Staff were very helpful and informative with the safety chat in the beginning. The boats are perfect for a small family trip across the lake! A lovely little adventure for those who love to be on the water.

Reasonable prices to hire a small electric boat for an hour. Up to six people and they allow dogs. Life jackets included in price. Easy to drive, my 12 year old even had a go. You can only book online and it does often sell out at busy times.

Top place. Wanted to hire a rowing boat like I have in the past however it was still the winter season so I had to hire a motorised one. Really good experience, exceptional views of the lake and the scenery especially if its a nice day. Staff were really helpful and laidback. I also proposed to my girlfriend which was a bonus. FYI you have to hire the boats by prebooking on their website so make sure you do because the spaces fill up fast especially on the weekends/term time.

Great location to park up and explore the town, the lake and surrounding area. Good for pub lunch or boat trip and the nearby waterfalls are beautiful. We went canoeing on Windermere whilst there as well.

What an excellent and wonderful cruise on England's largest lake. The company were great and the boats are in good condition. They had lots of knowledge about the place and the history behind everything. The views you get on the cruise are unmatched and what a great way to explore the lake. I would highly recommend this activity for everyone of all ages to take in the wonderful lake Windermere.

We used lake cruises (red cruise) as a family. It was lovely as we had the chance to be in 3 different piers (Bowness, Brockhole and Ambleside) with amazing views and beautiful places. Multiple time slots and boats to board on made it much easier to plan the day.

You can have self boating and cruise here. You will feel connected to the nature. A lake surrounding by hills and islands.

Took the Red Route circular tour to Bo'ness. Lovely experience,you can get off at Bo'ness and take a later ferry. Lots to choose, from a classic steamer to the very latest, Swift, a new comfortable vessel.

What a pleasant way to spend a day 👍I recommend the Cruise and Walk option with the walkers ticket, which includes three boat trips interspersed with an easy 2hr walk alongside the lakeshore - Wray Castle to Ferry House. Well worth the £16 ticket.

We went on the green cruise. Great choice for the family. A 50 minute cruise to Wray castle and Brockhole. You can stop off either stop and catch the next boat. Take a picnic for a perfect day out.

It's such a beautiful place, we have to follow the weather for 2 weeks. Luckily, this last weekend was with no rain, so we started driving Lake district. Had beautiful day.

We caught the cruise from Ambleside to Bowness with return for £16.50 each which is well worth the money considering a small electric boat costs £40 for one hour ,the first boat was a modern cruiser. The staff were polite and it was on time. on the return journey, we boarded the 1920s lake cruiser. and again I couldn’t fault the staff.

Lovely little place to walk around. Small craft shops are great. Lots of pubs and places to eat. Look for the hidden little alleys that take you to the hidden little gems

You see how people can be sometimes limitless in doing things for some essential needs when they have to(ground tax etc). This is an interesting piece of thinking.

Nothing spectacular but a small stone house built on a bridge said to avoid paying land taxes. It get more interesting when you learn more about its history and related stories. It has become one of the most photographed houses in the UK and a must-see when people visiting Ambleside. It is pleasant to stroll around the house, sit on the bank or benches for a rest or explore shops and restaurants nearby.

A must see tiny house built over the river. Don't miss when visting Ambleside. Wrynose Pass is just off Ambleside, very narrow road passable for 1 vehicle and no guide rail by the sides.

Bridge House is possibly the most photographed building in the Lake District, and a popular subject for many artists including Turner. A tiny building, originally an apple store for nearby Ambleside Hall, was built over Stock Beck to escape land tax. Once five mills were driven by the power of Stock Beck and some may still be seen nearby. It is said that at some time a family with six children lived here in the two rooms.

A small stone building sitting on top of a bridge. Said to be one of the icons in the area. Nice to stop by, take some pictures, and enjoy the environment.

Beautiful small house. I was in love with the stone house architecture …. The location is just simple stunning…. The house has even a balcony…. Ideal spot to seat a relax drinking coffee, tea or just water.

Used the cafe and staff were so polite and helpful. Had a really nice gluten free roll and lemon pie. Filter coffee strong and hot. Toilets lovely and clean. Christmas display was lovely and plenty to choose from

We drove past and saw the Christmas display and immediately knew I had to visit. A lot of time and effort has gone into the displays, a fabulous selection of Christmas decorations and gifts. It was a Sunday morning and was very busy, the car park which seemed quite spacious was queued when we left. Seemed a lovely garden centre although we mainly stuck to the Xmas and gift area.

A holiday to the South Lakes would be incomplete without a visit to Hayes garden centre. A very good range of stock both in and outdoors. However beware very expensive. For example a peg back here cost £10 whereas in Wilkinson's we bought one for £1.99. Does the same job. They do have nice displays which is why you an enjoy looking around without buying anything. That's the theory, in practice we always come out with something. On this occasion it was air plants.

Visited for the first time for many years and it has changed a bit. More open now and a bit more commercial than the early days. Had a very nice (and big) pannini in the café. The world changes and so do places from your past, but that is how life is 🙃

Great variety of items from shoes, chocolates, food and toys for your pets, cakes, biscuits, beers, gins, books, cards and loads more obviously including garden items. Christmas selection well worth a visit and there is a restaurant for a bite to eat if you fancy!

Huge range of Christmas decoration, full colour as well. If you love Christmas then you'll be like a kid in the candy shop. I know I was like a child in this place. It's a great feeling. Come visit.

I can't give it full marks as it was just a pop in visit, so I can only give it 4/4! This is billed as the largest garden centre and I can believe it. The cafe was terrific. A bit on the pricey side but worth it. Lots of gifts for all occasions. Excellent wheelchair access.

Nice looking place with massive choice. Plants comparing to Grasmere Garden Centre more expensive however choice is far greater here. Large car park, usually its not too busy. Definitely worth visiting.

What a fantastic garden centre. E erything you would need and more. The plants looked very healthy and the centre was well stocked. Loved the Christmas display - it really felt like a Christmas wonderland. Food at the cafe was great; unfortunately, we had no room for their delicious sundaes.

Amazing and professional service. Due to an oversight on my behalf, I contacted the customer service team and within an hour the issue was fixed. The products are fantastic and excellent value for money, but the service and attitude is out of this world. I highly recommend Hayes Garden World to anyone who wants the best of the best.

Probably the most beautiful garden centre I have ever seen. The displays are impressive even to the finest detail. The soap display is a sensory feast of music, colour and delightful scents. It is a huge circular building with access to the centre plant area from all indoor areas. The plant area has a stunning backdrop of a green hill with sheep grazing. There is something for everyone.

I traveled 120 mile round trip, best dayout always, fantastic displays, wonderful choice of garden produce, and more, Cafe is a delight with a lift for disabled people, and yes dogs are welcome, not in the restaurant but on the terrace you can treat your pet to an assortment of prepared meals. Miss visiting here, is a treat your going miss.

Oh I just love this place, it's location alone is wonderful at anytime of the year. There is a fantastic Christmas display, trees, decorations, you name it, it is there. Perhaps a little pricey, but if you just want the magic to inspire you it's there. Plus you can have a cuppa and food in the Restaurant upstairs.

Very interesting, emotive and homely house. Gardens lovely with it's beautiful and colourful rhododendrons and azaleas. The tea room is small but there's plenty of seating outside, in front of the house, with gazebos for those inclement days. Well worth a visit.

A great visit, really informed and enthusiastic younger guide (book a tour, it's worth it!) the house feels quite contemporary, and many rooms are open which we enjoyed, and the 5 acres of gardens are varied, planned and tended for many years by Wordsworth himself, we were lucky with the weather too! Beautiful building in a beautiful area. Very short walk to the falls which was wonderful. The gardens are very peaceful and its a quiet area. Only downside is having to pay for a permit to park on the site and the cafe inside was expensive

Everywhere you visit in the lakes is just beautiful and here is no different and you will not be disappointed! I would recommend visiting rydal mount where William wordsworth lived and the gardens which are just stunningly beautiful. Lots of little nooks and colours and scenery to explore. After rydal mount and gardens I'd absolutely recommend taking the next part of your wander down to rydal hall and it's grounds...the falls are breathtaking. You can explore the woods and then enter the grounds through the gate by the tea room to explore even more hidden gems like the Grot and Waterfall. Tearoom and toilets available at both rydal mount and rydal hall. Parking at rydal mount is free only with admissions paid to rydal mount. For this parking, Drive past Rydal hall up to the top of the hill and you will see the parking for rydal mount. You can leave the car there once you have explored the house and gardens and want to explore rydal hall. Enjoy 😊

The last home of William Wordsworth - what more can I say? It was a gloomy day close to the Spring Equinox, and it drizzled. But we loved it. Little waterfalls, tons of super green moss, brooks, hills, a sculpture trail, and a very lovely café with the best chocolate cake ever. We'll be back mid or late spring, so we can witness this beautiful place on it's green dress.

The gardens were wonderful but a bit steep in places. The staff were very friendly Nd helpful. I only bought a garden ticket £5 and that included parking. Excellent place to stop and gather your thoughts. And a special mention to Dora the Cat.

We visited Rydal Mount and Gardens whilst on a break in the Lake District. It is the family home of Wordsworth. Lovely gardens and I learnt a lot about Wordsworth from the information in the house. It transports you back in time. There is also a cafe which is quite small but there's some nice outdoor seating and the woman serving was lovely.

Stunning views amazing gardens. Loved it here and so cheap. 10 pound per car and then money off tea and coffee. The waterfalls are stunning. Would recommend

Absolutely brilliant place! Both instructors were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, it was my sons first proper experience with rock climbing and he was encouraged but not pushed to go further than he was comfortable with. Highly recommend.

Ben the instructor was absolutely brilliant - friendly, knowledgeable and encouraging. Would highly recommend if you’re new or not very experienced. Ben gave great clear instructions and taught us numerous things which reassured us that we were in safe hands. Really enjoyed the climbing session, thank you so much!

Took our 11 yr old Granddaughter for her first climbing experience on a wall. First class venue . Brilliant coaching from a very patient Freddie who has won this girl over to a great sport and I’m sure she’ll be picking up the NICAS training he spoke so passionately about .

We had a great time. The host was very relaxed but efficient, explaining everything and checking our familiarity with the equipment and techniques to ensure we had a safe and fun experience. Would definitely go again.

Our 8 year old son loved this climbing experience. The staff, in particular Ben, were amazing with the children, so positive and reassuring, but not pushy when my son couldn't go higher. It was well organised, the safety talk was clear and at child level. I would definitely recommend and my son definitely wants to return and I may even try myself next visit.

Nice bouldering area but quite small and the price is quite high considering the size. The routes are quite challenging as well! Beginners may find difficult to start. Roped climbing area looks amazing!

Went there for some bouldering on our last day in Ambleside. We're beginners and all shop staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We had the bouldering room all to ourselves and despite the room being quite small there's lots of routes to try and discover, and the staff gave us excellent advice about bouldering and climbing shoes. It was a fun visit and I wish them all the best.

Great climbing wall and bouldering area in central Ambleside. Very good value for money, with a well-stocked climbing shop and friendly service. I had several hours of first rate instruction from Ben and Fergus, who offered well-structured tuition and who were patient and accommodating regarding my limitations as a novice climber. Highly recommended.

We spent a morning ghyll scrambling, whilst visiting the area on holiday. A family of five with one 8 year old and two 12 year olds. It was the most fun we have ever had as a family. Our instructor David was knowledgeable, calm and kept us all safe. We scrambled up waterfalls, crawled under rocks and trees, did a rope climb and jumped into deep water pools. We were all exhausted but elated and our whole family agreed we would do it again. Brilliant fun.

I had an absolutely beautiful, quiet, relaxing and inspiring stay! Thank you very much for your warm welcome! The room is super clean. Guests are welcome to attend services which I found very inspiring Lots of lovely facilities/rooms in the premises, e.g. tea shop, library, painting room, dry room, souvenir shop etc. my favourite experience was the breakfast, the breakfast is 💯 fully nutritious, has everything and anything a person can wish for. I had a dinner once, it was very delicious but as a vegetarian, I just wished it would have more grains or plant-based protein, but maybe that’s just me. On the other hand, the breakfast is full! And kept me well energised for the wonderful hiking paths almost for the whole day! Thanks again for everything! I travelled home with books 📚 to study, hope I’ll visit soon again!

Just left Rydal hall after 7 days of camping and I had a fantastic time as did my friend who also stayed. The grounds are beautiful, well maintained and there was so much to see and do I highly recommend to anyone thi king of visiting.

Just had a lovely walk around the estate and grounds at Rydal, always kept immaculate and it’s always a treat to pop in their tea shop for something delicious ❤️

Amazing place to camp with beautiful views, plunge pool, lots of access to paths and nature all around you. Staff are incredibly helpful and facilities like toilets were clean and showers were amazing. Also has a dry room for wet kit and a sheltered washing station

booking reference DBM52682528393638 stayed 2 nights mid week middle June 2023 lovely to look at campground and possibly the nicest five star facilities in the lakesdistrict. however the praise ends there ..... there is no control over noise after 10.30pm and both nights was kept awake until midnight and after ! mostly by teenagers from various groups. also both mornings disturbed by campers packing up to leave one lot at 4.30 am ! and the next morning another lot at 6 am ! and as there is no warden or admin after whatever o'clock cars were returning after 11pm and leaving long before 7.30am there was also someone shouting their 'head off' for some 2 hours from 7am somewhere adjacent to the campsite. there are virtually no flat tent pitches anywhere pain in the .... the rule about no vehicles next to tents seemed like a nice idea until you realise how far to carry all the cooking gear and food with only one tiny fridge down at the loos for the whole site. there is no under cover communal cooking or sitting area. and it's possibly the most expensive camping in the lakesdistrict. I was lured to it thinking it would be so peaceful and a 'step up' from the average lakesdistrict site but it was far from my expectations and even though its a lovely site to look at I would not go back and would save my money for a cheaper site elsewhere.

Set in beautiful grounds, and furnished comfortably and sensitively, this was an ideal location for my meeting. The staff were friendly, helpful and professional and the lunch delicious. Excellent coffee in the breaks too. I can't recommend highly enough.

I don't normally write reviews but after my recent stay they definitely deserve one! Bottom line is that it's a great place to stay. Such a beautiful and peaceful location, especially the garden rooms that give you a view all the way down to the mere. The building is old, so don't go expecting everything being modern and slick but it has history, charm and the important things are all there (heating, hot water, comfy beds. The staff were super friendly and accommodation. Even when we forgot our walking boots in their drying room (how good is it that they even have one!?) they were quick and communicating and helped me post them back to us. Continental was nice and I actually liked that there wasn't a massive tv overpowering the room or stay, in fact there are no room tvs at all which I like. Lovely time and I'd gladly stay again and also recommend, especially for those who want to do the Fairfield Horseshoe Trail. Not particularly close to amenities but isn't the point of the countryside to been amongst it more than townhouses!? Beautiful

Well dont miss It. Gardens and Woodland free to explore for no residents to the hotel. Great waterfalls and main Garden. Dont know about the parking here. I left car somewhere else.

Very good stay for 2 nights with our dogs. Room was clean, lovely little well stocked tea tray, great shower. The window didn't close properly but it wasn't a problem for us in June, (could be in the winter?) Grounds are just beautiful and fantastic to walk the dogs. Breakfast isn't flexible on time, but was everything that you needed. The little bar is a nice touch. Good value for the price. Would stay again.

This building is full of history. From 1600s until present day. Staffs are super friendly and very clean. It doesn’t feel old inside the room nor the interior.

Rydal Hall was absolutely incredible! Extremely good value for the price, friendly and helpful staff, great food, a very clean and comfortable room, absolutely gorgeous grounds with so much to see, and an super convenient location. This is a perfect place for a retreat and recharge. Nice rooms, good food. Nice walks. Just the right place for a peaceful stay.

This hotel is in a wonderful location in Rydal. The grounds are amazing complete with waterfalls and trails through the woods. Sadly I didn't see any red squirrels. The rooms are simple and there are no televisions but you have everything you need. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice. Friendly service. My dog was made welcome.

Never actually went into the hall as it was only 8am in the morning. But got some great pictures around the hall.

This place was on our list to visit and it was very good to be fair. They had a kids workshop running which was really good to keep then entertainted and plus they had loads of choices for hot and cold drinks including chocolates.

Great wee experience for children and adults😀. One of ours backed out at the last moment and so I had to step in. The staff were very well organised and kept the group interested and occupied. Good hours entertainment for a special holiday treat.

You won't be able to resist the delights that await you in here, absolutely delicious treats in all kinds of flavours and beautifully presented in high quality boxes and finished with a hand tied ribbon. Every time we go we are met with warm, friendly staff, eager and willing to cater to your every need and wants. Ample space around the shop for wheelchairs, walking aids or prams and buggies, ample parking just beside the shop.

An absolutely fantastic wet weather activity with our boys (4 and 10). The course leaders entertained them and they came home with some really delicious chocolate. We were not sure as these things can be a bit of a swizz but we got top value for money. Recommended.

Took my 7 and 3 year old here, my oldest did this last year and loved it. This year we thought we would let our 3 year old try, however, he did not like the idea of being in the room without his mum. The ladies running the chocolate making were lovely and told me to get a hair net from the desk and come in with him. Unfortunately, the lady on the desk was not as understanding and she refused, informing me I would have to pay £18 to stand next to my 3 year old. The lady was rude and completely lacked empathy for situations like this. My 3 year old lasted 5 minutes in the room and the lovely ladies running the chocolate making told me to come in as he couldn’t settle without me standing beside him. This was greatly appreciated. I feel this policy needs revisiting -(or other staff need additional training on matters like this and the best way to deal with them instead of being rude to the customer) The option to take a parent with very young children I am sure would be greatly appreciated by many parents so their little ones can enjoy the experience. Understandably, this couldn’t happen with all children as there just isn’t the room to do so, however, some give and take is definitely needed with 3 year olds. It’s a lovely experience for kids and after we got over this small issue, they loved it.

This could be the highlight of our holiday. Honestly, so much fun. The girls running the workshop were great with kids and adults alike. Everything was explained clearly and was done in a really fun way. You get to eat a fair amount of liquid chocolate and keep all the things you make (including the molds). I honestly can't recommend this highly enough.

Average at best. Not really worth a visit. The sweets and treats on offer are nothing special at all. Chocolates lack any real flavour and are not very chocolaty, bland tasting and lacking in any cacao or real chocolate flavour. The fudge was almost completely tasteless and not worth the money at all. The are far better places to visit than this, even the local co-op has better chocolate.

Pretty good milkshake, lots of chocolates to chose from, server was really friendly and chatty, however i do think its a tad bit overpriced

Fantastic selection of confectionery items. Lots of toblerone bars with sentimental messages on the wrapping. Selection of tasty chocolates that you could choose from to make your own selection box from the counter. Had lots of other sweet options that were non chocolate

Excellent place to visit with kids, kids loved it especially eating all the left over chocolate bits. They made a soldier and dinosaur, chocolate block with there name on and a marshmallow catapiller.

It's a nice walk around Borrans Park. The Roman remains are fairly interesting.

Not much left of the fort to see but there are some interesting stories to read and the surrounding is gorgeous. Its likely to be on your hike path anyway. If your route pass around here.

Great to see the remains of the Roman Fort at Ambleside. Would recommend making it part of a walk or day exploring ambleside area as it doesn't take long to look around. Information plaques next to the ruins to let you know what each section was, very interesting. Easy to get to from the ferry through Borrans Park. Or you can find parking in town and walk down towards the lake, around a 10-15minute walk by road or there's a longer walk that takes you down past the river.

It’s free! Only a small amount to see here but it’s worth the visit if you’re walking past

Hard place to rate and review! It is what it is, not like they can build some more ruins or anything! It’s also free, has signage up, is a nice small walk and you can tag it on at the bottom of a Wansfell Pike walk or similar. Only thing they could do maybe is have a bit more info for kids.

Worth a quick visit if you're in the area. Unusually it's free to view and in a beautiful location

A really lovely place to walk around and it's only a short walk from the lakes edge. There are a handful of information plaques with the history. There are also a few cows but they mostly stayed off to the side near the water, if they make people nervous. Some amazing physical history from 1st and 2nd AD

You can see the fort layout and imagine the buildings from the pics and explanation boards. Get to walk around them too. Ground was soft and spongy due to all the rain, wore our hiking boots and stayed mud free and dry. No tickets needed.

We found this place by accident as we were heading towards Ambleside. You need to use your imagination as there isn't a huge amount left - but there are some good information stations which help with this. Also it's free!

Worth a look and quite interesting to try and work out what was what. There are information boards there too.

Foundations and earthworks of a 2nd century Roman fort. There's more to see at Hardknott Roman Fort, but Ambleside is more easily accessible, only a 15 minute walk from the centre of town. Information panels with artists' impressions of how the buildings would have looked help with visualising the site in its heyday. There are no facilities but entry is free. Worth a look, particularly thanks to the picturesque setting on the shore of lake Windermere.

Only remains of a fort in a open field with not much information available, No sign posts for directions and there isn’t any car park , nearest place to park is lake side car park ambleside.

Once you find it by going through the park entrance and entering the field through the gate on the right hand side, its a great little peak into history. With descriptive signs about the little or larger areas and some great back drop views to boot. We went on foot, so you may need to look into parking if driving there.
