Lovely views, different parts to explore and also have alittle fair for the children. Plenty of places to eat but will cost you alittle, deffinetly worth packing a picnic as there is plenty of green spaces to have a lovely picnic. We went on the boat ride which was lovely experience, plenty of boats to ride and easy to book, as well as lovely staff. Parking took us a little looking around but eventually found a spot, easy to pay through a app or by cash. Toliets you have to pay for, they do have a free on hidden within the park area.

The lake itself is a fine example of natural beauty. It's the largest lake in England, apparently. It was lovely to get on a boat and explore it. The surrounding area of the lake, particularly in Bowness-on-Windermere, leaves a little to be desired. Parking is very difficult, first finding a space, then queuing at insufficient machines that are also ancient. For me it's one of those where it's nice to visit once, but not somewhere I'd be rushing to return to.

I have visited Lake Windermere two times during the winter. The first time was in 2021 and the second was in the first week of 2024. Lake Windermere is huge and is great for wild swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking.

Absolutely gorgeous views from the museum and honest pretty much anywhere that you stop around the lake. I have not visited since I was a child and really enjoyed just sitting and taking in the scenery. As with a lot of Cumbria if you visit on dry days it's stunning.

We went today on a very clear, beautiful November morning. The walk up is fairly easy along the blue path but can get quite steep. The red path is a bit of a challenge but not too bad. A lot of steps and uneven ground but beautiful views which give an excuse to stop every now and then! Once at the top there's a few places to sit and admire the view. On a clear day we could see out for miles and loads of other peaks around. We could see clouds rolling over the hills in the distance and snow on the distant peaks, as well as the entire lake. A truly stunning place to go.

The best place to see Windermere lake from the top is orrest head. Its approx 3 km walk to the top and amazing location and thick forest like feelings. Even in summer the walk ways covered by trees and you feel cozy.

A hiking path with two options; gravel road & rock/mud/moss to get up to the viewpoint. The walk was short, about 30 min up and 20 down at a casual pace. There are benches along the gravel path, but no bins for trash. You may encounter sheep on the way up. At the viewpoint one can see Windermere clearly.

A moment closer to nature can't be more beautiful. The place is just amazing. Famous author Alfred Wainwright once came here and the beauty urged him to stay in the surroundings forever( he lived in Kendal till his death), Everyone should visit the place. I would recommend everyone to come early during the day as it can become very crowded during some time. This can be very dangerous as the Covid-19 virus is ravaging across the country.

Very pretty. Not a long walk either, you could be up and down within an hour if you want. The day that I went was a bit misty, but that worked in our favour as the trail wasn't so busy. It definitely seems like somewhere that would be crowded on a day of good weather. Certainly worth a visit in any event.

A short hike up to the top, about 1h two ways. The starting path was a short distance away from windere railway station. It was recommended by the tourist information center. The view was great. Good place to hike if you do not have much time to spend in Windermere.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience. There are so many things to do and enjoy. Booking in advance is a great idea to make sure you make the most of your time. Although just strolling around the gardens and the path along the lake is also very enjoyable. The staff are superb, well trained, helpful and make sure you enjoy a good time and make sure you are safe.

Good for family with kids due to nice playground with clean toilet within the outdoor playground. Many sitting areas for the parent or picnic. No entrance fees, just small fees for the parking. Short nature walk along the coastal, and water sports available before 5 pm. I arrived in the late evening around closing time (5:30 pm), very peaceful. The gate will be closed by 7 pm, and reopened by next day morning.

Great place for a family visit and lots and lots of fun activities to do. Couldn't do the zip wire as fully booked but were spaces for the tree net/trampoline for the kids. Book in advance if you can and would like to do activities. We arrived by boat but you can also drive there. There is hot food like fish and chips, charcoal bbq and a cafe for sandwiches and ice cream. Great place to visit👌

This is the venue for the great north swim and it is very beautiful. The house and gardens are particularly well kept and held lots of inspiration for me as an inspiring gardener. We got there via public transport from Windermere. The car park on broad Street has an early bird special. If you get there between 8-9am you can park there for the day for £1.

This is one of the most beautiful places I ever been in the UK! I didn’t get inside the castle, but the garden! the view over the lake! and the tremendous amount of activities in this greenery is just amazing!!! The stuff were very nice too. I had my father with me who’s 80 and his walking ability is limited. The nice stuff offered a free electric buggy for him to go around and he absolutely loved it ❤️ It’s place for the family for all ages to enjoy! If you ever come to the lakes this place is a MUST.

Beautiful place. You can park and pay. We went down to the cruise, and it wasn't far. On the way, we saw a cafe/gift shop and also zipline (tree top) and a play area. We got our tickets and the boat came. We got on it and went around windermere. They give lots of info on board. It stops at each stop. The views were breathtaking. Really enjoyed this adventure.

This is a great day out for the family from grandchild to grandparent. There are plenty of activities - archery, laser clay pigeon, Lake cruises, tree top ropes, zip line, just to name a few. Or if you wish you can have a quiet stroll through the gardens down to Lake Windermere followed by a cappuccino and cake. If you want to spoil yourself take a spot of lunch on the cafe terrace. The hot sarnies are delicious.

Fabulous place to visit for all ages! From tranquil garden to adrenaline rush of zip line there's something for everyone. You can even take a trip up the lake to Ambleside or across to Wray Castle on a cruise boat. Great adventure play park with toilet and picnic beaches. Tree top nets are an amazing way to spend a few hours to great rid of that extra energy. Boat hire from kayaks, paddleboards, rowboat, canoes and motors boats Krazy karate, Archery, Laser Clay Shooting, brave the cave, woodland faerie trail, mini golf, mini tractors and treetop trek. Lots of choice of places to eat or even bring your own picnic.

Nice garden and view over lake, visitor centre and cafe were closing at 5.30 what feels a bit early for summer. I assume that a lot of people just like us are trying to get most of their time in Lake District and would like to enjoy cup of tea or buy some presents from gift shop after 5pm. Garden gates are closing at 7 pm, so we could have a much more relaxed time and spent some money there as well instead of quick walk around garden.

We've been on holiday in the lakes for 2 weeks and spent 2 different days here, the park is great. Our girls did the treetop nets and loved it, we had 2 hours or time out while they were safe in the nets too which was a real treat 😁 the place is well kept, the cafe is over priced, the lake activities well priced. This is an amazing place for the kids. So much to do we had to split it all out over three days. Some would say the activities are a little expensive but I saved up for this holiday with the intention of taking the children on multiple activities so wasn't much of a shock when I needed to pay the cost. Also in my opinion the price reflects the experience and equipment used, there's no where near me that even comes close to this place as a whole. I would take your own food and drinks. There's no rules specifically about that unless your in a venue. The grounds themselves are amazing and plenty to look at. There's plenty to do for free if you can't afford or interested in doing premium experiences and that includes one of the best adventure playgrounds I have seen, and yes it's free for all.

A beautiful visitor centre and garden that I was not even aware existed until recently! Admission is free. Lake steamers stop here, so you can arrive by boat and stay here all day. If you arrive by car, there's a pay and display car park (£8.50 for an all-day visit). I came here with a small coach party to do the Heritage Garden Tour, which lasted about an hour. Our guide Kevin was both friendly and knowledgeable, and he shared some interesting facts about the house, garden, and family who once lived here. Some magnificent trees and flowering shrubs, including a magnolia in full bloom that was planted around 1900. Gorgeous views down to the lake. Be aware that this is a terraced garden, and there are steps that can be a bit slippy after rain. After our tour, we enjoyed a cream tea in a cosy café with lake views. The scone, with jam and cream, was huge and very fresh. There are clean toilets next to the café, a gallery with dioramas of Cumbrian wildlife and habitats, and a beautiful gift shop. This is a fantastic place for families and children. There's a treetop walk and zip wire near the entrance, an adventure playground, and little tractors for small children to ride on. There's also a good variety of outdoor activities, including archery, mini golf, laser clay shooting, and bikes and kayaks for hire. Dogs are welcome both in the grounds and the café. I enjoyed my visit, but it was all too brief! Would love to return in the summer to explore the woodland and lakeside walks.

Wonderful day out, they pulled out all the stops to make it special for families. Halloween decorations and experiences were superb if not a wee bit scary (haunted forest). Chris the magician and professor pumpernickel were excellent! £96.00 might seem expensive, but for a family of 4 who expected to stay 4 hours but actually stayed 8 hours and could of stayed longer, well, well worth it. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Good trip out, been a number of times before and the activities are the same with the addition of axe throwing. Always best to check online and book in advance . Best advice I can give is eat before you arrive or take your own. It is expensive to eat and drink here, hotdogs £9.50 child's burger £6 a plain coffee £3. This makes it a costly day out . They also no longer have toilets near the play area and tree top nets so if you have children it's a walk to the bathrooms at the house.

Really quiet when we were there,so no issues in parking. Looks a great place for children with zip lines,clay pigeon shooting, archery and of course the lake activities. These all need booking beforehand.We walked all the paths and enjoyed the surroundings. Parking cost was £3 for 2 hours,so not bad really. Overall recommend.

We called here briefly for a stretch of the legs and to see the sunset. Parking cost us £3 for 2 hours on Ringo. I'd definitely like to return here to see it properly in the future. We had a walk through the woodland and to the lakeside. There's loads of a actvities here, massive grounds and a house. There's a Beatrix Potter trail I'd like to do and a bird hide I'd like to visit. Activities cost extra but the ground are free to wander round. Plenty of maps are dotted about in the grounds.

Reflecting winter skies and frozen falls in our homepage image is Rydal Water, one of the smallest but prettiest lakes in England’s Lake District National Park. Rydal Water is one of the two lakes most associated with William Wordsworth, one of England’s greatest poets. (The other is neighbouring Grasmere, to which Rydal is connected by the River Rothay.) Wordsworth lived around these bodies of water, first at Dove Cottage and later at Rydal Mount, between 1799 and 1850, writing some of his best-known works and hosting leading lights of the Romantic movement, including his friend, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. To the western edge of the lake is Wordsworth’s Seat, a rocky outcrop said to be the writer’s favourite spot. Rydal Water sits in a glacial valley that also contains the town of Ambleside, one of 13 valleys in the Lake District. Partly owned by the National Trust, it sits at the foot of Loughrigg Fell and has been known to freeze over on winter days like this one. You can walk around Rydal Water and take in Wordsworth’s former homes as well as pass by Rydal Cave on the hill above the lake. Grasmere and Rydal Water enjoy a beautiful setting in any season, surrounded by woodland, pasture, and craggy fells, as well as several National Trust-owned properties and beautifully designed landscapes. Beautiful lake with great walks around its perimeter, with an impressive slate cave in the hill on its south side. The walk up to the cave and back along the south shore took a couple of hours, spending time to stop and enjoy the views.

Beautiful scenery and walks, thoroughly spoiled by an abundance of inconsiderate dog owners. On my walk around the lake, I stopped counting at 35 bags of dog poo that been discarded along the footpaths. Many bags were tied in trees, perched on walls, thrown in ditches, left under bridges, next to benches. Utterly disgusting, and a massive turn off for ever returning.

I really liked Rydal. As I approached from the east, it's quiet, with the little boathouse poking between the trees for a photo many have taken. As you go along the southern shore, everything opens up, for one of those classic Lake District scenes, water shining bright below, and the mountains rolling off into the sky. Keep going into the trees, and there is one of those beautiful little streams that are found all over this area, and each are as gorgeous as the other Rydal is well worth a visit, and you can keep going to Grasmere water, and then on to the pretty little village of Grasmere itself, for good food and cold delicious ice cream!

Beautiful place for an easy hike, rain or shine - we did it in both! Quite a popular trek so expect to see others on your way and for sure take something to snack on when you find a perch down by Rydal Water. That's the best way to take it all in. We were lucky (and nosy) and had spotted filming crew in the area. We waited for the path to reopen by the caves and who was there? None other than the Witcher/Superman himself, Henry Cavill!

This is such an amazing garden in the Lake District. A very beautiful place for a scenic, peaceful walk. No entry ticket or parking charges but they accept donations as it is maintained by the volunteers. Holehird Tarn looks beautiful. There are many varieties of flowers, plants and trees. They look so beautiful in the spring.

Our first visit to these beautiful gardens. The gardens are extremely well kept and everything is labelled, which is rare. The place is run by volunteers who obviously work very hard to make the whole place look so good. Definitely recommend a trip here. Also very easy to get to.

Been to Lakes oodles of times, never knew this was here - what a shame, it was a wonderful discovery. No entry charge as such but donations are accepted. We went on a dreary Sept day but even so, the views we glimpsed and the gardens are so worth it. There is a more formal Walled garden, with beds etc and then much larger landscaped areas, built on a gentle hillside. The car park is on a level with the main Walled garden, so those with limited mobility may manage that and even on its own, its worth it. But if you can manage steps and sloping paths, each turn gives you something new to look at. We couldn’t manage to see their more specialist areas (up a very wet slippy grass bank) but still plenty for us to walk around. Lovely rocky stream running through one part, with fabulous planting. There are some toilets tucked away behind the main building - always useful.

Beautiful gardens that are maintained purely by volunteers. My nephew is one such volunteer and has found it hugely rewarding. Holehird is a special place, peaceful and beautiful, and with an amazing variety of plants, albeit with some strong themes - hostas, hydrangeas, mints and mosses, alongside a stunning magnolia that boasted so many buds on our visit, we’re already planning on coming back during the flowering season as it promises to be magnificent. Many of the paths are wheelchair accessible, often with a resin surface that is quite grippy, rather than the gravel paths one often finds, and which can be more problematic. Views here are stunning, too, and rewarded our late December visit. There are toilets available on site, including a disabled toilet, and free parking. While Holehird is not the largest such garden in the area, we happily spent an hour and a half visiting, which would have been longer in the summer with the garden in full bloom, I’m sure.

Top of the tops! I can give only 5 stars in this reviews but I would easily placed 9 in 5 stars scale. Extremely colourful, tidy and well kept with exceptional variety of different plants placed with extraordinary taste and knowledge. You can admire this garden as a whole picture or focus on every single plant for hours. Entrance is free but they suggest £5 per person. Worth every penny! This garden was part of TV program by fantastic horticulturist Christine Walkden.

Amazing ride on good ponies with fantastic scenery all the way. Our guides Peter and Hannah were friendly and took good care of us. Easy ride with a bit of trots - highlight of my trip 🥰! There's no reason not to go for a 1 hour trek! Was blessed with perfect weather too.

Visited a few weeks ago as a large group, ranging from two who had never sat on a horse before up to regular riders. As a result experienced both the beginners ride and hour hack between us. We were well looked after and had a fab time despite the weather! The ponies were lovely, quiet and calm looking after our nervous riders perfectly (my new buddy Storm obviously being the best). My son and I did the hour hack, something he had never done before, up on the hills. Again the ponies were just as brill on this ride as they were for the beginners!

Booked late on Friday 22nd April 2017. Arrived at 2.10. Few instructions later and my grand daughter was ready to go. Her first ever pony trek and it went very well. Everyone was really friendly and a special mention must go to Paris who was absolutely brilliant with Hannah. Would recommend for a couple hours of fun and scenery. Spent a lovely Sunday morning here with our daughters age 2 & 5 this past weekend. Lovely weather, lovely scenery & very gentle, well behaved ponies. Our eldest was quite nervous for the first 5/10 minutes but the staff did a brilliant job distracting her & chatting to her till she settled in & started enjoying the ride. Even during the rain, It was an absolute treat. Would have elongated the time had the weather been on our side. The staff were friendly and caring. We’ve never ridden a horse (we rode a horse and a pony) before but with clear instruction it was easy to follow. With early settlers dating back to over 5,000 years ago, the area quickly became the source of stone for axes and the sites of stone circles. The development of the Grade 1-listed Townend House in Troutbeck began between the 15th and 16th centuries, and some of it is still standing today. By the 18th century, canals were constructed to allow for easier access for visitors and transportation of coal. In 1840 the first railway was introduced, connecting London to Kendal and providing a relatively fast way of transportation for the wealthier members of society. This is often referred to as the beginning of tourism in the Lake District. The introduction of the railway also encouraged local entrepreneurs to begin establishing their own enterprises, and by the middle of the 19th century the Lake District was home to many successful businesses that could now trade with ease and efficiency. An example of this was Stott Park Bobbin Mill, which at one point manufactured half of the bobbins used in the world’s entire textile industry. The mining industry was also to feel the benefits from the development in transport links, and opportunities skyrocketed, transporting iron ore and steel to further afield than ever before. In 1810 a guide book was published that was to evolve the future of tourism in the Lake District forever; William Wordsworth’s Guide to the Lakes mapped not only points of significance and natural beauty within the location, but also how the individual should view certain points to achieve an all-encompassing feeling known as the sublime. At this time in history, Wordsworth’s poetry was immensely popular, and due to this he was quickly awarded celebrity status. Consequently, when his Guide to the Lakes was published, tourists flocked in their thousands to catch a glimpse of the sights that Wordsworth regarded so highly. Grand mansions began to crop up around the Lakes in popular areas such as Coniston, Ambleside and Windermere, and as they say, the rest is history

Super helpful service of luggage storage at the Windermere tourist information centre. Very convenient location just couple of minutes from the bus/ train interchange at Windermere. The locker was good sized with proper lock; costed £7 to hold our luggage. The lady at the reception was lovely and helped us plan our walk around Windermere as we had only 3-4 hrs to spend there. Just have to be mindful that the luggage needs to be collected by 4:30pm. Great service and very very useful to have!!

Handy bit of information regarding the local area, the lady serving was polite and helpful enough, I came to use the luggage storage option for the day, as of Jan 2022 it is £6 per day per locker (pretty big) up until 4pm when they close, so you need to be back before then.

Depends on the person in the shop. I had a good experience there. There are maps that are free (and also paid) which are informative, especially around Windermere region. Do ask the staff for information about things to do in Lake District, and especially if you do have some specific things you would like to do. The souvenirs are fine, but we like the locker rental service (£6 for a sizeable locker for the day), which we used to have a trip around Windermere while waiting for the train to arrive. Do note that the bags have to be collected before the centre closes so time your hikes/walks properly.

Today my mum and I spent 4 hrs with Thuline! We had a fantastic afternoon painting pictures of our pet dogs! What an incredible teacher she is!! I can highly recommend spending time with her ...she'll offer a half day or a whole day workshop! To be honest I so wish we had booked in for a full day! I'm no artist but she taught me how to use acrylics and I'm well chuffed with my painting of my gorgeous pooch! ...as is my mum! We will definitely be back ..thank you so much Thuline x

This is an update of my earlier review, which I've left in its entirety below. Having done an 'animal' workshop (see below), and having loved it, I decided to do an online (due to Covid) day with Thuline doing a landscape course. Apart from the usual Zoom glitches, it was fantastic. I'm really pleased with the result so far and had a great day. Thuline has even given me some advice as to how to make it even better - I'm just having a breather before I start! I've just spent a day with Thuline in her studio on one of her "work with the artist" 1 to 1 courses and managed to paint a recognisable likeness of my dog. It's way better than anything I've done before and I've learned tons about using acrylic paint. I also learnt loads about creating the original sketch. Thuline is a lovely person to spend time with as well.
