Okay experience at Funchal Cable Car. Tickets bit pricey (€15 each return) but queue and access to car quite fast, and can bundle ticket with access to Botanical Garden. Stunning vistas of Funchal and surrounding valley during ride. Gives access to Monte Palace Tropical Garden and toboggan rides at top, and Botanical Garden at bottom. Do bear in mind separate cable car needed to ride to Center Funchal, which costs additional charge and takes extra time.

€18 for a return trip which is very good. I've seen reviews saying it's cheaper in a taxi to the top however you are paying €18 for the view and experience in my opinion. First time in a cable car and it was quite amazing to venture up into the mountains via this mode of transport. Good views and well maintained cable car. At the top there is lots to see and do. Traditional sledding at the top as well as numerous chapels and churches to see. Botanical gardens are amazing here and a few cafes and bars. Well worth the money and trip.

Jardim Botanico car offers Mountain View’s as opposed to the city views on the Funchal cable car. We could see hikers on trails below and several water falls.

Buying tickets on the spot is not that bad. We waited like 10 min maybe, they are very organized and the lines go fast. The cable car ride is beautiful, you can see all Funchal from above. Recomand to take cable car if you visit the Botanical gardens. Easier way to get there from the seafront

Wonderful view on Funchal from the cable cars, expect to wait for approximately 30 mins before boarding. If you are visiting the botanical gardens allow at least 2 hours to enjoy the spectacular gardens.

The best way to get to Monte Palace and Gardens and also at the top not far to the botanical gardens cable car. It is slightly more expensive than the local buses. You can buy a return ticket or one way only if you want to walk back or get local transportation. On the day of our trip, it was €36 for two adults' returns.

It's definitely a must do, bit on the expensive side with both cable carts and 1 garden entry, weather can be mixed at the top and Change very quickly.

Riding the cable cars is an absolutely must! The views are amazing! The equipment and facilities are very modern and efficient. Our group of 3 was paired with 2-3 more people on each voyage. The cars are roomy and easily accommodated this.

Don't miss it. It takes you to 2 beautiful gardens (tropical and botanical gardens but a 2nd cable car goes to the latter from the end of the 1st one). Don't let you be cheated by some taxi drivers at the departure point of the cable car saying that it's much cheaper if they take you to the top first instead of taking the cable car.

Just bought 2 tickets online, but no receipt, no tickets to print. Nothing sent to my email. Website says go to "Bookings Page" but the link brings you to "Purchase Tickets" page. I can see the charge appeared on my credit card immediately but where are the actual tickets i can print?

This is a great ride. You have an amazing view of the city and forest around you. The cars are being maintained properly and are in good condition. The ride was smooth and there was no line to wait. Worth a visit. Even though it's a tourist trap.

This is a very eclectic place! We took the cable car up to it and then spent a few hours wandering around it. It's built on the hillside, so the further into the garden you go, the further down the hill you go - and then you have to walk all the way back up to get the cable car back down (or the sledges! 😲). There is an exit at the bottom of the garden, but you won't have seen all the grounds and you'd have about an hour's walk back to the city centre (I'm not sure about buses). The palace, just looks like a big house. It looks great, but we didn't go in it, and I'm not even sure that you can. As you enter the grounds, there is a cafe and some exhibits - one on Zimbabwe, one on gemstones and one on Monte Palace. There's a second cafe near the bottom of the gardens. The grounds are fabulous 😁. Paths all over the place, leading you through hundreds of different plants. There are 'tiles' and sculptures everywhere you look, but my favourite was the oriental garden, closely followed by the central lake. If you like gardens, walks and art / sculptures, then this is definitely one for you. We were €12.50 each to get in.

very nice and shady park. Very varied with different architectural styles, plants, water features and animals. there are probably 100 ways to walk. The basket toboggan rides can be observed well on the south-western part (red No. 15). A stay of at least 1.5 hours should be planned. But you can also spend half a day and more there. there are all sorts of seating options everywhere. There is a transportation service from the lower part of the park to the top for a small fee.

Unique and beautiful experience even if it was windy and it rained for a while. The tropical gardens are amazing, there are sweet flamingos, exotic plants and sequoias. Also, in the central lake you can admire beautiful swans. The garden offers two nice coffee places and clean toilets. It’s definitely a must during your stay in Madeira.

Beautiful gardens and definitely bigger than they look at first glance. I would leave at least 2 hours to fully explore the museums and gardens and just enjoy the beautiful views. We did a big hike before visiting the garden and would not suggest that as it is all up and down hills lol! Lots of plants and flowers in bloom to admire.

Beautiful gardens combining nature, art and eastern culture. Here you will find countless species of plants, unique mosaics and many streams and waterfalls. It is definitely the showcase of Madeira. The ticket costs 12.5 euros.

High up over the city, good views. Cable car ride to get there, was not busy in January when I went. Garden is quite steep, they do have transport for those that need it. Lots of architectural pieces as well as plants. Nice cafe at the far end. Flamingoes make a splash of colour.

Beautiful garden above Funchal. Take the cable car up and admire the views on the way already. The garden is very relaxing, packed with greens, koi ponds, artwork and something interesting around every corner. You can easily spend a couple of hours here just wandering and getting almost lost. Stunning even in rainy weather when we visited.

Very nice park with plenty of plants and flowers. Japan garden inside. Great view from park to port, Funchal and the ocean. I saw two places where I could stop for the snacks and drinks. Park was clean and tidy. The price is reasonable. I give 4/5 only because I expected more different flowers inside the park.

A refreshingly beautiful tropical park in the heart of Funchal. Easily accessible by cable car (costs 18€ return) or by car, this park is a landscaping marvel! Don’t miss the flamingoes when you go here. They’re absolutely adorable. The park is built on several levels and has varying landscapes. Just take a good 2-3 hours to spend here and explore the man-made beauty of this place. Breathe in the fresh air and soak in all the different species of flora they’ve cultivated here! Only thing is the price- it’s 12.50€, a bit expensive for a park. Should definitely be more accessible. They offer a free shot of at the end of the tour but they don’t have any non-alcoholic options so that’s a shame. I’d still recommend going here for a relaxing day.

Good looking garden with some viewpoints on the Funchal city. We have used the pack for 35 euros to take the cable car round trip here, the entry itself cost around 9 euros per person. Honestly if I would have to choose I would go rather to the tropical garden than this one.

One of the most beautiful gardens we have ever visited. Totally worth the visit. It has different themes and areas with a nice storyline about Madeira and it's culture. It is very cozy and relaxing. Totally recommend.

If there is Heaven on earth then it is there. Child friendly. Very well spent time stroling around. I did not like the chinese compositions in the park, but i assume it is taste specific.

Nice gardens. Great location high above Funchal. Visited in early February so not many flowers out but still nice. The views are great. Lots of paths to explore. Café looking over Funchal is highly recommended. Took the bus up 21/22 which was easy. I'd been on the chair lift before.

We visited this place in October and enjoyed it a lot. The whole garden is quite big, so you can spend several hours in it. There was an exhibition about African art in one of the buildings/museums inside the Palace. Also, our best part of the whole thing were the places with Asian motives + the section where you can admire flamingos!

Spectacular Gardens. It is very worthwhile visiting for an afternoon. We had a really nice time at the Monte Palace for a few hours in the afternoon. It's substantially cooler in these gardens than elsewhere, and we enjoyed a few hours away from the heat in beautiful surroundings. Plenty to see and meandering through the gardens was wonderful. Seeing the flamingos and a good view of the Madeiran sledges was a bonus. I'd recommend giving yourself a few hours to explore and wander around the different routes in the gardens to really appreciate them. Beautiful place; well worth visiting.

Stunning tropical gardens. Beautiful views over Funchal. Gorgeous lush statues, tiles, plants, waterfalls, wildlife. Great for photographers. Beautiful light although can be challenging on a cloudy day. A rich history with additional exhibitions. Challenging terrain for anyone with walking difficulties or a wheelchair due to the inclines and cobbles but not insurmountable. Cafes and staff lovely. A thoroughly enjoyable day.

Fascinating and enjoyable gardens plus a stunning geological collection of crystals. I'd recommend planning your visit early to avoid the crowds at the cable car and gardens.

Lovely garden, in need of a little better upkeep in places, possibly a hangover from the pandemic. The cacti are spectacular, however, and it's worth a visit for these alone. Great city views and a couple of good cafes for a spot of lunch. There's a minimum spend for card so have some cash handy if you just want a drink.

Worth a visit, especially if you are into plants and flowers. Was surprised by the variety of plants. There is a pond with turtles on the lower level of the Botanical garden, as well as toilets near the pond. Took us around 2 hours without transfers with funiculars. Do not forget to visit a Tropical garden nearby. In my opinion much more lovely! Plan around 2-3 hours for Tropical garden as well. You can buy tickets to Botanical garden together with tickets for funiculars and save some money.

Wonderful and well maintained botanical garden, we had a great time, basically it was giving a really diverse experience. Definitely worth visiting! On the contrary, at the coffee bar, the food is not really tasty despite of the high prices - so I recommend to avoid it, and maybe grab something more delicious outside the botanical garden.

I had expected much more from this place. Even though pleasant , I would have liked to see more flowers. Still it is worth the visit - for a 7.5 euro entrance! Not enough information about the plants. Also, being close to the highway, the noise is a distraction to all the beauty you'll find there. I do recommend a visit if you can handle slopes and like myself, do like nature.

Garden is pretty enough to kill some time in Funchal and offer a decent view of the city below. We accessed via cable car. Visited in January so potentially not as many flowers this time of year. Mostly enjoyed the gardens but you'd be fine to skip it too and just do cable cars.

The variety of plants here is amazing. Takes about 2 hours to go around and see everything. Not suitable for the disabled and saw some people with prams/pushchairs/strollers struggling in some areas. Good value for money (€7.50 adult entrance). Bus 29 and 31a go past the entrance.

On a hill above Funchal, we travelled up on the cable car. Very scenic. It was busy at the bottom, I would suggest trying to get there early to vent the crowds. The gardens are lovely and it's a quiet location. Great views and there is a cafe overlooking Funchal.

A really enjoyable place to walk around, with some fantastic flowers and plants on display. It is very hilly (as with most things on Madeira!), but worth it. I bought the combi ticket (both cable cars plus Botanical Garden) which I thought was good value for money.

Really nice botanical gardens, filled with a huge variety of flora. The views down the hill into Funchal centre are spectacular. You can either drive up to the gardens, get a taxi, local bus ( bus stop outside the lower entrance) or like us come up the main cable car, exit out to the right at the top then walk down to the botanical cable car and then into the gardens at the top end. ( this was €36 return for the main cable car and €22.80, including botanical garden entry fee, return, for the garden cable car, pay for these at the cable car, prices correct as of Nov. 2023 and based on two people) However, if you are infirm or struggle with hills, you might find the walk from cable car to cable car a bit of an ordeal, definitely not suitable for wheelchair users. The gardens have a cafe and toilets. In the garden are a wide variety of plants, a small museum, souvenir shops and a hot house ( which was shut during our visit). Even though November is considered winter here (24°!) Most of the plants were at the end of their season, so there are not many flowers, spring and summer are the best season for these. Having said that, there was still plenty to see. Be careful of the footpaths, and yes, the gardens are on a hill, so you will be walking downhill/uphill throughout your visit. There is a large pond with fish in it and smaller pools with floating plants on them, so beware, do not stand or let children near these as they look like solid ground but do contain water.

What a beautiful place to hang out. I took a bottle of wine and a book. Amazing views of the harbour and the valley. Well manicured and managed. A lovely marine collection too. A bargain and well worth a visit. Would be awesome if they had a monthly or annual card so that I could afford to visit more often. Thank you for this piece of peace and tranquility 🌴♥️

Great garden. It used to have in past some few exotics birds but they are now not available anymore. The gardens are a must see. Multiple area very peaceful and romantic. Can see rare and interesting plants. Very well maintained. There is also the starts of the cable car to monte, a bar terrace and a small museum with zoology and natural items.

This place is nice if you’re a plant lover. It’s not the best botanical garden I’ve visited but does have a wonderful and diverse amount of citations and plants. The cactus garden is the most spectacular one to see. There’s a few cafes and the cable cart that goes up to the mountains. Be prepared to have your best walking shoes and to be walking a lot up hill.

The gardens are lovely, not quite as much drama as Monte but they are beautiful and much more educational. It looks like they are slowly redesigning areas and those look especially good. I saw some comments about weeding, and in some beds yer there were a few weeds but it was still much better than my garden! Entry was much cheaper than Monte and the variety of plants was really impressive, definitely worth a visit!

Nice garden, but if you’re not a huge fan of flowers or don’t have enough time, it’s not a must-see in Funchal in my opinion. Also, it’s quite hard to get there from Funchal – you’re gonna need a car or a taxi.

Beautiful! One of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have seen. Relatively small, but very well cared. I do like the part where you can see the fossils from Madeira, some kind of little museum in old building. There are plenty of viewpoints on the area as well as places with refreshments. Strongly recommend 😀

Very nice botanical gardens. You can find inside so many many special of plants. Beautiful and very knowledgeable. Fee for entry is just 7,50€ and you can also get to viewpoints and look at city from above. Worth to visit. I am not mentioning adrenaline ride up here by bus 😌 perfect experience. Inside the areal are toilets and small buffet.

You can reach the gardens by bus which stops outside or by car where there are car parking spaces outside. The gardens open at 9am and cost approximately €8 per person. You will need 2 hours to visit. There are lots of ups and downs. There is a cafe on site. It is reasonably priced. The service was slow and could be more welcoming. There are toilets in different parts of the gardens. We were hoping to take the cable car to Monte Gardens, but it was not running the day we went.

A fantastic garden up in the hills of Funchal. There was so much variety and plenty of room to spread out. I particularly enjoyed the cactus plants, the turtles and those views. Quite tricky to get around if your mobility isn't good. We bought a ticket which includes the cable car to Monte. The cafe was delightful with good prices and great views.

Lovely gardens for wonder around a must visit. We used the bus which can be found on main strip in Funchal the bus stop has the sign on top easily seen . Walking around the gardens is fantastic stopped off at the cafe for a beer and great views of Funchal .

Beautiful garden with labels on most of the plants, a nice cafe and several viewpoints over Funchal. The paths are a bit narrow, steep and uneven so not really suitable for anyone who's a bit unsteady. The cable car from Monte wasn't working due to high winds, but was caught the 31 bus from the town centre. Would have liked a map.

Very nice and relaxing place. The bus number 29 takes you here in less than 15 min from Funchal city center. On a sunny day it would be also good for a little piknik. Amazing views too!

It’s easily accesible by car, you go through very nice different areas as you are driving up. If you are lucky you can see the clouds from above, they say it happens more often in the mornings.

Great hike that might be quite challenging for some people due to narrow paths and big drops right next to your. We didn't have nice weather but still got some views into the valleys and it is an amazing place. Definitely one to do and one I will do again when visiting the Island.

Very interesting place. Amazing hike through cliffs and beautiful mountain range view breathtaking views. The hike to Ruivo and back can be challenging for somebody. If you are lazy or not in your best from currently, you can take just short hike to the stairs of heaven which is one of the most interesting part of the hike and only about 20minutes walk from the start of the hike. Anyway, prepare yourself for many tourists since it is the most touristic place on the island. But worth visiting anyway.

The second day after we have done the PR.1 hike, we came back to see the sun set. Once again we've been fortunate enough to have a blanket of clouds below the peaks. Fabulous views and experience!

This is one of the must-see places on this island. Walking along well-made mountain paths you will see unforgettable views of beautiful mountains and valleys. It is like walking in and above the clouds.

At seaside the temperature is summer, but the mountain peak temperature is winter. Need warm clothes to enjoy the view. If you see clouds cover the peak, it doesn’t mean that peak is actually cloudy. Peak may be over the clouds.

Amazing place to see a sunrise and sea of clouds. Make sure to come early since the parking lot can get full very easily. In such case there is one more lower down the road. Also, it can get very windy and quite cold there during morning (morning in May it was 7 degrees).

Stunning place to be above the clouds. Arrive at either sunrise or sunset to get the best light. I personally recommend sunset, as for some reason, there are hardly any crowds! And in the evening you can ignore the 1hr parking signs as no one is checking after the cafe has closed

Amazing hike. You really feel like you’re walking in the sky. You look down at the clods and it’s so cool. Beware that it can be a bit difficult to navigate. We did a 7k hike but ended up walking more like 12k. Also, it is not a loop so we grabbed a taxi back to the car which took an hour. However it was 110% worth it

Absolutely one of the most intense hikes I’ve ever done. Bring a lot of food and water. Elevation is no joke. A lot of stairs and it tends to get very crowded towards the afternoon. Parking is also very limited. Beautiful spot and a must to watch the sunrise here.

The most stunning hike I’ve ever been on. It feels surreal walking above the clouds. I am not an experienced hiker and not sporty at all, but it was still absolutely doable. Make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat and lots of water!

Amazing experience, so beautiful and exhilarating, worth every minute of you time. Make sure you grab some warm clothes. There's a bathroom at the cafe near the peak but for a fee.

So much to see, fantastic views of ocean above the clouds, plus stunning vertical and green mountains. A must see and i recommend you get a taxi guide because the police will not let you into the facility unless you park your rental car to kilometers away down below whereas the taxi is allowed to drive up right to the site

We arrived around 6:30 am and found only a few parking spots remaining. Instead of waiting for sunrise, we began our hike early. It proved to be a fantastic decision! We found an incredible spot to watch the sunrise en route, and the trails weren’t crowded yet. While the first 30 minutes were in the dark, we felt secure knowing we weren’t alone. Although classified as a challenging hike due to numerous stairs and an elevation gain of approximately 1000m, we found it manageable. My wife, who isn’t in peak fitness and experienced knee pain, completed the round trip with me in 6 hours. By our descent, the trails were bustling. For those unsure about taking on this hike: believe in yourself! It’s a challenge, but very doable. Just ensure you bring a frontal light as there are 5 tunnels, meaning portions of your hike will be in the dark. For a more serene experience, I’d recommend starting the hike before sunrise and aiming to return by lunchtime.

Fantastic hike, the best I have ever done. It is very busy yes, but the views are fantastic. Don’t underestimate this hike it is a tough one - especially in the heat.

I love a sunrise and this has to be the best. Absolutely breathtaking - candy floss clouds and magnificent views. Take a coat and hat as it’s chilly until the sun comes up 😍 PS toilets were shut at the cafe in the morning, so make sure you go before you drive up!

Just stunning, if I did it again I would get to the car park an hour before sunrise to give enough time to walk up and start the hike into the dark as it was extremely busy when we set off, I think if you get going in the dark you will have very few people around you as alot of people all wait on the viewpoint to get the sunrise photos from there. We only got there 30 mins before sunrise and by the time we got up to the start of the hike (viewpoint) from the car park there where so many people. Take gloves if you get cold hands also some of the rails have plastic around the metal wire others don't. Also hat or a hood are essential to prevent wind giving you ear ache. Also worth double checking your route if using Google maps and approaching from the west of the island. See attached highlighted route in red. This was OK but had one of the steepest road I have ever driven up. If you have a lower power car or struggle on hills it could be a big problem. When we did it we had an auto golf so absolutely fine on the power, but we had to work our way around two cars that had either crashed and where waiting for the police or just couldn't get up the hill. The route marked in blue takes an extra couple of minutes but far easier drive. If you don't get there for sunrise you I doubt you will get a car parking space, when we came back to pick up the car it was insane how many cars where parked allover the peak along the roads. Maybe better to book a transfer and pick up.

As a wedding photographer this is one of my favorite places to come to – especially for sunset or sunrise wedding couple photos! Also a perfect spot for a ceremony. Still can't believe my eyes whenever I'm up there above the clouds.

JUST DO IT ! The drive there : don’t worry it isn’t scary drive in fact at the very top there’s flat land basically , in the high (scary part) there are barriers and the road is pretty good width so yeah no worries. Children: my sister was 12 and she only went up to the first viewpoint which is roughly 30 minutes away from start point and I think this is good for people who want a view but not have to do whole hike. I saw really young kids there about 5 aswell and parents with babies. Reccomendations: the route is demanding especially on the way back because of the stairs so I would say be a fit person to do this. I only did a quarter of the hike maybe 2 km one way and 2 back. If you want to see the staircase that looks like it’s found to the sky u gotta walk till the first viewpoint and then another 20 minutes. I highly recommend this. If you aren’t in good shape I still reccomended driving here and just watching view from point next to parking place it’s already extremely beautiful :) Tips: 1. Comfortable clothes 2. Jacket or warm clothes way colder here than down in town 3. Check weather don’t go if it’s rainy or too cloudy /foggy the view won’t be as nice 4. Wear comfortable shoes 5. Wouldn’t reccomend doing the hike if you have children under 10 years old as it is high up and dangerous for younger kids

A stunning hike, though not without its challenges. The initial stretch is manageable, but the return involves a substantial ascent with numerous steps. Our November visit graced us with ideal hiking weather, yet the trail was bustling with a crowd. Frequently, we found ourselves patiently waiting for others to navigate the narrow passages. In summary, it's a breathtaking hike, but a dose of patience is essential.

It wasn’t as easy hike as it seems:) be prepared and have a lot of warm clothes (even gloves, hats and warm pants). I had to buy second pants at the kiosk because it was too cold to start the hike. Also, bring water and some food. Hike is about 7km to one side and you have to come back. It’s not for everyone because it has a lot of stairs everywhere.

The view was stunning, definitely worth visiting. Make sure to go very early in order to find a parking lot. On the top it is extremely windy and cold, so be prepared! You won't regret going!

Unreal hike, well worth a visit. Can get quite crowded, but we started the hike around 11:30am and it was okay.

I was not impressed with the harassing/ aggressive nature of these fruit sellers. I appreciate that they’re trying to make business but it did make me feel very touristy. We finally gave in to have some fruit from one of the stalls upstairs. Having lived in Asia for 25 years I know how fresh fruit can/should be at a reasonable price. I should have been more picky to check the fruit I was given myself. But I could see it was overly ripe to the point when it was mushy. For €35 euros I certainly feel very ripped off. I could get fresh dragon fruits from Thailand for a fraction of the price.. Warning also for those who get nauseated the smell of fish. Not the best spot as the market with fish has an overpowering smell. The only nice bit was the plant section.

Lovely little market with flowers fruit and veg on 2 floors and fresh fish on a lower floor. Also a cafe and gift shop. We visited whilst on a one day visit from a cruise ship. Bought some of the local poncha to take home. It was nice to see some of the stallholders in national dress.

Visually appealing market to look around, full of fruits, vegetables, flowers, seeds, sweets, fish and souvenir shops. However, like any other market in a capital city, it is overpriced and geared up to profit from tourists. I am told the Funchal locals don't shop here.

The place looks nice, but the vendors chasing after you waving their banana-pineapple hybrid trying to convince you in different languages to taste it are really annoying. Some of them from the second floor got very rude once I declined and started to shoo me away.

Lots of vendors selling fruits and goods. Only a few selling fish. Pretty fun to browse. We tasted a number of things, then had a steak sandwich to share. A few good cafes and restaurants attached so you can browse, and then sit down and eat or drink.

Amazing. So much produce. Loads of interesting stalls selling all manner of fruits and vegetables, also has a bustling fish market for the freshest fish you could possibly want. Highly recommended.

Very pretty, colorful, beautiful 'presentation' but also very expensive compared to smaller stores. Also if you are like me and it is hard for you to say no, do not talk to the sellers that want to give you a sample of the fruit. If you decide to buy something they will try to force you to buy more by putting more in the bag without your consent. Of course if you point it out, they will give you less but prize will not be fair. You will still pay more for less.

The market opens at 7am, only open for half a day on Saturday and closed on Sunday. In the market there is opportunity to see them preparing the fish, buy fruit, vegetables, plants, flowers, seeds and herbs. It is displayed over two floors. The stores can change depending on the day of the week. It is colourful. On the top floor there is also a restaurant that is open the same time as the market. The market is used by the locals and you can see them come and go. If you want to purchase something the traders will explain which products are used for what.

Exciting to see so many exotic fruits. We bought one pineapple banana, two dragon fruits, two mango and several passion fruits for 90 euros, see full list with first photo, second photo is her stall. The vendor lady claimed no paper for her card machine and insisted cash.

Extremely busy but worth a visit. A lot of fruit, veg and flower/plant stools but not loads else apart from the usual touristy stuff. The adjoining fish market was impressive and really fun to walk around seeing the traders de-scale and gut the fish! An old traditional landmark.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STAND! GUY SPEAKS GOOD ENGLISH BUT LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE PRICES. Charged us €12 for a date with a walnut in it and €6 for a mango you can buy in a supermarket. Other traders are expensive but worth buying some of the exotic fruit. This guy lets the entire market down I’m afraid!

I came on a day where it was raining off/on which really cut down on the crowds because this place can be a madhouse when the cruise ships are here. If you want to just wander, enjoy all the colors and various things to see and aren't looking to actually buy anything it's great. It's just one of those cool things to see if you can catch it at a good time but the fruit is seriously over priced and really geared to grab tourists. If there's an empty table somewhere to sit and just watch it all do it because it's certainly a people watching place!

Came here to buy flower seeds and saw one of the best kept, clean and pleasant markets I've ever seen. I recommend sincerely!

Overpriced fruits and dried chillies. A real tourist trap to stay away from. The store owners will approach to let you try different samples without telling you the prices. You can take photos and try the samples but don't buy fruits there. Fruits that are on the street are much better in terms of prices.

A very vibrant market full of crowd especially before 2pm during the opening hours. The variety is great but unfortunately prices are very inflated. One would expect to have bargains in a market but this is not the case.

Great market quite surprising what you'll find. The types of fruit there are quite amazing. Fruit that tastes like a tomato mixed with a passion fruit 🤯 (absolute treat for the tastbuds!), three different kinds of dragon fruit, amazing and juicy mangoes and more. We didn't look at the fish or meat sections because we don't eat them but it was really fun and even had a plant section too with people wearing traditional outfits and hats. I wouldn't visit more than once but I certainly think everyone needs to visit it. It's super central and easy to find. Highly recommend.

Farmer’s Market is a place where you can find lots of tasty local fruits, flowers and different condiments. In front of the market you can find a restaurant where you will eat a great fish and a good wine😁😁😁Icecream and coffee are everywhere and you will need them after having long walks 😁😁😁

What a stunning place to visit, the colours the smells are amazing. So colourful and vibrant with all the exotic flowers, fruits and vegetables. There's a large fish market as well which obviously adds to the smell but there such a lot of fish here to buy. Lots of samples available to taste the exotic fruits which are so unusual We'll definitely be going back for another visit before we leave the island

You can find everything here. It's a bit pricey but worth it as the quality of the goods is better. Also you can ask to taste tropical fruits before buying

Very beautiful market. Worth seeing. It is beautifully structured and you can see many varieties of fruit. It is not cheap. A red banana was 3.5€ and a pineapple banana was 10€ each. Only the pineapple-flavored one was ripe, the red one was still raw.

Popular tourist place. But be careful if one wants to buy stuffs here. Beware of the dried fruit stalls with no price labels. Almost 3 times more expensive than markets in other cities. Hard bargain is a must.

Well worth a visit: lovely buildings, interesting tour and museum, and two glasses of Madeira for €11. You can carry on and taste more Madeiras, and if you buy a bottle from the same year you get the price of the tasting back. Also 10% discount if you go on the tour. The facility to buy there, and pick up after passport control at the airport, is very useful indeed. Our 4 bottles are waiting for us!

The building was impressive. Some amazing attention to detail. Sadly the shop was closed. Low stars because we wanted to have tasting but couldn’t hear ourselves think due to building noise in the courtyard. We said we couldn’t hear and the server grimaced theme started shouting at us so we left.

We thoroughly enjoyed a delightful wine tasting session at Blandy's. With a selection of 9 generous tasters available at an affordable price of only €17, it was a wonderful opportunity to explore a range of exquisite wines. The convenience of being able to walk in without a prior reservation and choose our preferred tipples added to the overall experience. The setting provided the perfect atmosphere for a pre-dinner treat, enhancing the enjoyment of the wines even further. We highly recommend this wine tasting experience at Blandy's to all wine enthusiasts.

If you wonder what does the traditional madeira wine taste like, this is the perfect place for that. The interior is creating a Carribean vibe and it is quite extensive with multiple rooms. You can have the 1 or 3 year old wines in a bigger, relaxed area, while for the more vintage style 5 years+ wines can be consumed in a library style room with bottles all around you. 1 glass starts at €2 and a 5 year old is only €4-5, and they also do tastings, so whatever you prefer, you will find it here.

This was a good thing to do on a rest day, when you aren't hiking, or if there weather is bad. There were several types off tours, depending on how in depth you wanted to go. My guide, Diana, was extremely knowledgeable and even had personal experience with her family to share about the win process.

A beautiful location and set up to taste and buy Blandy brand Madeira wine. There's multiple rooms (tasting room, restaurant, shop, vintage tasting space) and a paid tour on offer. There's lots of paid tasting options but staff can guide you through the complexity of different brands and ages. The space is beautifully arranged. Of course it's also a place where you can buy a bottle to take home. The vintage tasting room is a good way of tasting single year harvests instead of the more common blends.

One of the most famous Madeira maker from the island. Very high standard and quality. Old Madeira are wonderful. Service is very good. The only issue is the prices of everything here. Visit is not free and also the tasting unlikely the other very famous Madeira wine manufacturers such as d’Oliveira where you can taste for free even Madeira from century 1929 or older. This is not possible here unless leaving the 30 or 60 euros of the glass. If you really like Madeira I would recommend first Barbeito second d’Oliveira third Henriques & Henriques. HM Borges is also very good with very specific and unique Madeira a must visit too. The hm Borges is also recommended by the very talented sommelier from the best restaurant in the island. The 2 stars in red Michelin El Gatto d’oro

A must visit when in Funchal. A wide selection of tasting’s available to suit your budget and the place is full of character too. Done a tour last year which was very informative and interesting.

Nice place, offers a lot of wine options to try. If you like something you can pay in the shop and take the bottle in the airport after duty free as a hand bag. I recommend doing this as airport prices are higher.

There are two tours that you can take. The premium and the vintage. The premium costs €12.5 for 30 minutes and the vintage costs €25 for an hour. The vintage tour takes you behind the scenes and gives you opportunity to see the collections of Wine. At the end of the tour you get opportunity to tase a sweet and a medium/sweet wine. The wine was of a high quality. The tour guide was knowledgeable. The staff are friendly and helpful.

This is a lovely park on an elevated site at the end of one of the main streets of Funchal. It has a lot of lizards which the kids enjoyed spotting and chasing :) It also has ducks and swans. It has wide open greenspaces too ideal for a picnic. It is a quiet place with lots of interesting flora.

Park Santa Catarina is one of the big parks in Funchal overlooking the port of Funchal. It is beautiful with a small water body and fountains. Many flowering plants and shrubs are inside the park. It is in fact a tourist attraction. I have spent evening time watching the port from here. Evening breeze is soothing.

Gardens but not just gardens. From the funicular, they develop all downhill and on one side there is a good view of the carros de cesto. There are different tropical species of plants and big parts of constructions have Asiatic influence surrounded with Portuguese history and azulejos. A good mix of things.

Santa Catarina Park is one of the most beautiful places to view them. Located between Avenida do Infante and Avenida Sá Carneiro, overlooking the port of Funchal, Santa Catarina Park has an area of ​​36,000 m². It is one of the most visited green spaces in the Madeiran capital and not just because of its central location. Here visitors will find a large lawn surrounded by flowerbeds with countless species of trees, shrubs and herbs from all over the world. There is also a small pond in Santa Catarina Park with an island that the birds living here use to nest and rest. This green space, created in 1966, also contains statues honoring Infante D. The moment you enter the museum (€5 cash entry), you soak up the atmosphere of all that he accomplished, the trophies he won and how the boy from Madeira became a legend. You'll see videos from each stage of his career, trophies across clubs, as well as historical artefacts, commemorative coins and more. The complex also includes a wine shop, hotel and other things. The place is in a good location by the beach and close to the centre of Funchal.

I’m not a big fan of CR and in general of football but I was present surprised. It's a popular destination for football fans and tourists interested in learning more about his life and career. The museum showcases various memorabilia, trophies, and personal items related to Cristiano Ronaldo's achievements in football. Shows what a one man can reach. Totally impressive. And a price of 5 euros per person sounds like a good deal for the experience.

Even though I'm not a big football fan, Cristiano's Ronaldo museum looks pretty awesome to me. I guess everything he ever won it's displayed there. The entrance tax is 5 euro. There is a fan shop available too. You don't have to pay the 5 euro tax to enter the fan shop. Prices are fair I'd say. 30 euro a CR7 t-shirt (looks pretty unique to me).

This is one of the most interesting places on the island, especially if you are a football fan! You can see up close just about all the awards he has won individually but also with his teams and the national team of Portugal. Some of the early memories while still playing in Portugal are on display and a full size statue of chocolate. It's a must see! Entry ticked is just 5 Euros!

4 stars because I was expecting more from this place. Man of his stature needs to have a bigger museum especially in his place of birth. With that being said whatever was there his awards, trophies and other signed artifacts were really well kept.

Visiting CR7 Museum while enjoying your trip to Madeira is a MUST ! I am not particularly fan of Football but it’s such an inspiring place ! When you visit his museum you can understand many things about his personality, his history and his relations with Madeira. I liked the fact that this sport guy won mostly everything and you can feel that he’s a hard working person ! The entry cost is about 5€ per adult There is only one (down) floor to visit but if you are a fan of football you gonna definitely enjoy your time there as this place is full of history. There is a small shop where you can buy some goodies from the museum and Cristiano ! Enjoy !

CR7 could keep all his medals locked way instead his museum has all the trophies, medals for club and country not to mention all the individual awards. Dotted around are shirts that are of significance along with hat trick balls and custom boots. The gift shop is small and I would say reasonably priced for the items. 5 euro entry which is not bad at all.

Nice museum with all of CR’s trophy’s! One floor exposition. Nothing more nothing less. Worth the price but don’t plan on spending more than 45 minutes here.

Christiano Ronaldo Museum. You don't have to wait long for admission. There is a shop with CR7 products and a restaurant on site. The museum itself contains jerseys, trophies and medals won during his career. Of course, most of them are replicas. The tour shouldn't take more than an hour.

I had the opportunity to visit the CR7 Museum in 2022, and I was pleasantly surprised that the entry fee was only 5 euros, payable in cash. This made the experience even more enjoyable, as I got to explore the impressive exhibits and learn about Cristiano Ronaldo's journey without breaking the bank. The accessibility of the museum and its reasonable pricing only added to the overall positive impression I had of this remarkable attraction.

These gardens are not so good as Monte Palace of Botanical Garden, but still worth -visiting if you have some free time yet to spend. Free parking in front of the enterance.

What a feast for the eyes. This place is sheer paradise. I wanted to stay forever. I felt like I was in England with such glorious trees and scenery. Tip - get Bus 37 from Funchal.

37 bus gets there from central funchal, sorta hourly on a Sunday but check the timetable. 15mins trip. Very steep uphill. Lovely gardens with tea rooms at the bottom. The Lady Garden was sublime. We went on a rainy day, was very atmospheric.

Very easy to get to from Funchal by the no 37 bus which stops outside the entrance. The entrance is €10 per adult. There are some lovely viewpoints throughout the gardens and plenty of interesting plants and trees to enjoy. I think that the signage could be improved especially as the paths are mendering and there are private areas embedded in the grounds. We visited the tea house which is positioned on the far side of the gardens on the borders of the golf club. The coffee and cake was OK.There was some seating inside the tea house but the outdoor seating was filthy and clearly had not been cleaned for months. The toilets which were situated in another part of the garden were very clean.

Lovely walk around peaceful gardens. We enjoyed the package entrance which included a glass of wine, custard tart and tea or coffee in the tea house.

Lovely large gardens, with great views across Funchal. Very well maintained and impressive range of plants and trees. There is a tea house with good choice of drinks. Cost to get in was €10 per person. Definitely worth a visit.

Huge garden. You don't know what will be at the next corner. Very complex. 2024 mid jan blossoming plants which I noticed: Michelia/Magnolia doltsopa, Telopea speciossima, Protea cynaroides, Banksia coccinea and integrifolia, Crotalaria semperflorens, Sparmannia africana, Strelitia nicolai and reginae, Aenium areoreum. I saw a brave Madeira wood pigeon which ate the Davidia involucrata's winter fruit. Other fantastic and jaw-dropping plants: Huge Araucaria angustifolia,bidvilii,exelsa, Cedrus brevifolia and atlantica var.glauca, Washingtonia robustra, Furcraea parmentieri, Pinus patula ,Cinnamomum camphora and leafless Liliodendron tulipifera. Also attractive with dried spikey fruitpeeled tree was Banksia serrata and nearly blossoming was Saurauia napaulensis. Phormium flax and a variation which was "Yellow wave" were also spectacular. Enjoy all. Come to visit. Highly recommended.

A huge romantic garden either with endemic species or Asian, Australian, African and American plants as well. Long paths to wander and well planned flower gardens to have a rest on a bench. The tea house has nice variety of cookies and good coffee. The views on Funchal is amazing!!!

Gorgeous altar, and even better that it’s free to enter. Typically ornate side chapels. I was inside about 15 minutes or so? Not very crowded when I stopped by this late afternoon.

The interior is amazing! The main altar is a piece of art, but when you start looking/walking around this cathedral, you get the impression that many smaller alters are integral parts of the whole temple. Organs are not big, but the acoustics are so good that the sound is powerful.

Sé is the common name of the cathedral in Funchal on the island of Madeira, the full name is Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. It is the mother church of the diocese of Funchal. The cathedral is a very beautiful one. And it is really worth visiting and taking photos!

The great church sé catedral do Funchal of Our Lady of the Assumption is the island’s first parish. in 1514 the church was inaugurated and at the time,this was the largest diocese in the world. From the outside it looks like an normal building but from the inside high, imposing, richly decorated with paintings and tiles, the ceiling it is made of ceder wood from the island and with many gold and ivory decorations, testifying to a rich history.

Small but beautiful cathedral. Amazing ceiling and ornate alter. You can put a coin in slot to illuminate alter - with it if you are taking photos.

A sacred place of worship that is beautiful and historic but not as opulent as one would expect from the name. However, a very well looked after and serene place.

Sé Cathedral, sometimes referred to as Funchal Cathedral, is a stunning and historic church situated in the center of Funchal. Whether you're interested in religious history or enjoy beautiful architecture, it's definitely worth a visit. It's a lovely and peaceful setting, ideal for some quiet thought or prayer. Do not overlook the stunning stained glass windows and the magnificent marble altar. Donations are accepted but not required for entry.

Attended my Birthday Mass. Church is always a blessed place to be..

We only visited as we were hungry, and while passing by, the receptionist shouting at us that there's a rooftop restaurant. It was our first restaurant meal of our holiday stay, although the service was quite friendly and the food was tasty, unfortunately unlike with some of the other few restaurants around the city centre, we did not consider returning here. We did not like the vibe, and the place lacked atmosphere. Rather than rooftop, it was just a balcony, and as seen in the photos all lit up by the green led lights. Initially, we did find access to the actual roof top, which provided a pretty view of the lit up city at night climbing up the hill.

Food wad outstanding and very fresh and big Portion and the Views from the restaurant is amazing here and the Customer Service is outstanding the stuff members are all ways smiling and having a joke with you and making sure you are happy with the food the food was really fresh and full of flavours it's like being in heaven eating food omg I wish I could stay here and eat all day but can't do that do to my small Stomach

Very interesting view into the history of the island, we learned a lot! Some of the interactive exhibits were not working, but there was a lot to read and take in. Well worth the 5€ it cost. Great views from the restaurant on the top floor, did not eat but had some madeira wine.

The restaurant has lovely rooftop views as on the 3rd floor. Entrance is through a shop with lifts that take you up. We ordered a beef skewer & a chicken skewer which were hung at the table. My husband said the beef skewer was good, although it looked a little rare for my taste. Unfortunately the chicken skewer was on the bone which maybe I should of checked but it wasn't what I expected. I didn't like the texture or the taste of the meat which was a shame. Food was served with a large bowl of salad to share and chips & sauce each At no point did they question why the chicken skewer was hardly touched. Service was friendly enough

We went for the museum the first day of our trip. It gave a good context of the island while our stay here.

We had our reservations at first as it is on top of a shopping centre. But thankfully it was brilliant my husband had the fish soup for starter and it was amazing and tornado steak for main,cooked perfectly. I had the beef skewer and again cooked lovely and came with fried maize which is lovely and something the locals have. The staff were friendly and very helpful. It's across the street from cable car entrance The view of the hills is beautiful. We would definitely recommend.

This review is of the terrace restaurant and bar on the 3rd floor of Madeira Story Centre. If you are seeking an oasis of calm from the queue for the cable car in Funchal, this venue is a good candidate. Madeira Story Centre is adjacent the lower cable car station. It comprises souvenir, museum and restaurant levels. Restaurant staff are welcoming and attentive. Food prices are reasonable plus the view of the cable car and sea is welcome. We only tried two dishes, seafood soup plus the avocado and prawn salad. They were perfectly adequate but not particularly special. Drinks charges are realistic. We enjoyed their sangria and tried a vertical tasting of three aged Madeira wines. In balance this venue is well worth a visit, particularly if you seek somewhere tranquil to watch the goings on at the lower cable car station. Recommended.

Good food and great view. I was taken here as part of a tour, but I would never have thought to go upstairs to the restaurant. What a find!! Traditional and tasty food.

I had been to the Lisbon Story Centre, so thought I’d visit the Madeira one. I learned quite a lot about Madeira’s history and economy - it has been a tourist and health-retreat destination since the 1800s, so the people are used to foreign visitors! You could spend a lot of time in this museum if you read all the panels. They're in four different languages. Well done.

We were approached by a guy outside this place, who insisted it was a really nice place to eat. However, we were only out for a drink, which was no problem. We sceptically went in. The access to the roof terrace is through the museum display (which gives a very interesting history of Madeira) or souvenir shop and up to the next level by lift. On the roof terrace, we were surprised to find a large eating area outside and a large section under cover, too. We chose a table near the front so that we could people watch on the street below then ordered our drinks which came out soon after. If you go up the stairs in the corner of the terrace, it takes you up to another large level covered in astro turf. Good photo opportunities of the rooftops, cable cars, and the upper slopes of Funchal up there. This is a great place to sit have a meal, drink, people watch or all three, it was very relaxing. The servers were polite and prompt (well, apart from when Pedro forgot to get our bill, but we can forgive him for that because of his charm and good looks😉) and well presented. The toilets were clean and tidy.

Rude attendee on the store on the back of the building. It was raining and the waiter (on 16 Jan 2024) just started closing the shelter with no warning. I wonder if he just didn't like our face or color. We left and not even 5 seconds later he started opening the shelter again. It was no crowded so I have no explanation for such an idiot attitude

An interesting museum of the history of Madeira. You can read some interesting information in Portuguese, English, French or German. I have the impression some things like screens and audio were not always working, but if you want to visit a museum while in Funchal, it is a good choice. Nothing particularly exceptional though.

We really enjoyed this on a rainy day. Good value, very informative. Answered a lot of questions we had from exploring the island previously. Takes about an hour to get around if you read most things.

Interesting museum to get a quick understanding about the history of the island, his discovery and settlement. Explanatory signage is concise and easy to read, while the rest is left to visual reconstructions of events and life settings. Unfortunately many of the interactive items that could make the experience more engaging are out of service. They seems like in disrepair. Nice view from the terrace at the third floor over the museum.

Okay experience at Funchal Cable Car. Tickets bit pricey (€15 each return) but queue and access to car quite fast, and can bundle ticket with access to Botanical Garden. Stunning vistas of Funchal and surrounding valley during ride. Gives access to Monte Palace Tropical Garden and toboggan rides at top, and Botanical Garden at bottom. Do bear in mind separate cable car needed to ride to Center Funchal, which costs additional charge and takes extra time.

€18 for a return trip which is very good. I've seen reviews saying it's cheaper in a taxi to the top however you are paying €18 for the view and experience in my opinion. First time in a cable car and it was quite amazing to venture up into the mountains via this mode of transport. Good views and well maintained cable car. At the top there is lots to see and do. Traditional sledding at the top as well as numerous chapels and churches to see. Botanical gardens are amazing here and a few cafes and bars. Well worth the money and trip.

Jardim Botanico car offers Mountain View’s as opposed to the city views on the Funchal cable car. We could see hikers on trails below and several water falls.

Buying tickets on the spot is not that bad. We waited like 10 min maybe, they are very organized and the lines go fast. The cable car ride is beautiful, you can see all Funchal from above. Recomand to take cable car if you visit the Botanical gardens. Easier way to get there from the seafront

Wonderful view on Funchal from the cable cars, expect to wait for approximately 30 mins before boarding. If you are visiting the botanical gardens allow at least 2 hours to enjoy the spectacular gardens.

The best way to get to Monte Palace and Gardens and also at the top not far to the botanical gardens cable car. It is slightly more expensive than the local buses. You can buy a return ticket or one way only if you want to walk back or get local transportation. On the day of our trip, it was €36 for two adults' returns.

It's definitely a must do, bit on the expensive side with both cable carts and 1 garden entry, weather can be mixed at the top and Change very quickly.

Riding the cable cars is an absolutely must! The views are amazing! The equipment and facilities are very modern and efficient. Our group of 3 was paired with 2-3 more people on each voyage. The cars are roomy and easily accommodated this.

Don't miss it. It takes you to 2 beautiful gardens (tropical and botanical gardens but a 2nd cable car goes to the latter from the end of the 1st one). Don't let you be cheated by some taxi drivers at the departure point of the cable car saying that it's much cheaper if they take you to the top first instead of taking the cable car.

Just bought 2 tickets online, but no receipt, no tickets to print. Nothing sent to my email. Website says go to "Bookings Page" but the link brings you to "Purchase Tickets" page. I can see the charge appeared on my credit card immediately but where are the actual tickets i can print?

This is a great ride. You have an amazing view of the city and forest around you. The cars are being maintained properly and are in good condition. The ride was smooth and there was no line to wait. Worth a visit. Even though it's a tourist trap.

To be honest, I expected to see more paintings. Here you can eat fresh seafood, buy a souvenir or even a duck. You can take a walk, but you will be invited to come from every restaurant. There are many restaurants, so it's a little annoying. Some houses are abandoned and smell bad. I think you know why ;)

A great place to walk through. Beautiful and creative door designs. I would recommend not eating here. Walk a few blocks away and you can find better priced and better food.

Nice artworks on each doors however it is plenty of restaurants and you’ll get invited to all of them. I recommend to pass by and then walk in all little streets around.

A popular point in Funchal. Rua de Santa Maria is a popular tourist attraction.. Mostly a walking street. The street is full of art work from local artists. There are many restaurants serving different cuisine on both side with their walls and doors painted.

Great place to wander through and admire the street art during the day and to eat and drink on during the evening.

Vital place od Funchal and Maderia at all. We were lucky to see oldtimers festival and a lovely Mercedes Gullwing alive!

One of the main roads of Downtown Funchal, therefore a lot of pedestrian traffic mainly caused by tourists. Nevertheless it's nice to walk on it along the harbour.

Madeira is a lovely place to visit. They have lots of events and festivals throughout the year. There are museums ,parks and lots to see and of course beautiful weather.

Avenida do Mar stretches between Santa Catarina Park (west) to the Funchal Cable Car (east). Nice to walk/jog leisurely along the promenade and enjoy the attractions on the sea side (marina, giant cruise ships) , or walk along the sidewalk on the opposite side to enjoy shops, restaurants and the Palacio de Sao Lourenco. Nice .

Another beautiful view among countless amazing views on the island. Restrooms were closed and parking was limited. Small gift shop a very short walk down the street with pay restrooms.

If you're looking for a great viewpoint over Funchal, Miradouro Pico dos Barcelos should be your first stop. It's free, easily accessible by car (free parking), there's disabled access, toilets and a cafe. What I liked the most were the views that made me realise just how widely Funchal spans over the mountains and how densely populated it is. You look up the very top house on each cliff and can't help but wonder how did they build there. I also loved the old pine trees that offer lovely shade and the beautiful tropical flowers. It's a great place to stop and take a minute or two to appreciate the beauty of the island before you move on to explore some more.

It's worth walking up to the viewpoint. A gentle slope to begin with then around a hundred and sixty steps to reach the viewing point. Views across the vally on clear days with a sheer drop of 3000ft from the hand rail on the platform.

Wonderful view across the Funchal Amphitheatre. You can even see Ronaldo's boyhood house from here, which I think why most people stop here now. Forgetting about the over-rated, over-paid footballer (let's face it, they all are) it's a nice view, but it's a bit like stopping at the M6 services just to get a look at Shap. (Those who live in Cumbria will know what I mean).

Great viewpoint for 360° views of Funchal. Well kept gardens and very clean toilet facilities. Highly recommend this place.

Beautiful panoramic view of the city of Funchal. Definitely worth a visit. It is nice to spend time at this beautiful little park. When I was there, it was very cool and breezy. It's a good place to relax and enjoy the view.
