I've been going to Mottram Hall for a number of years, but I'm afraid to say that since the spa renovation (which looks great), other things seem to be slipping and is not the standard you would expect for the price for an overnight stay.
First of all, they have closed off the internal access from the spa to the hotel, and you have to walk around the outside past the fountain. The whole point of going to a spa is to have a relaxing day, wander back to your room in your robe, and continue into the evening. Not to get blasted by the Arctic weather conditions in February, getting drenched, ready to check in. From what I gathered, this was all to make the event space bigger. You can tell that the staff sympathise with you, and I don't blame them, it's not their decision, however they need a solution to this, we're in the North after all, and it's more than likely going to rain even in the summer!
Furthermore, the spa itself seems very crammed, in some cases 5 or 6 beds pushed together, so you have to climb in. Some lights were out in the main spa, some were flashing creating a strobe light effect, other bulbs were slightly different colours to their counter parts. Various parts of the spa were dysfunctional too, such as the sauna door not closing without using a folded up piece of paper! The big jacuzzi seats (not loungers) had no working jets and the changing rooms were in bad condition too. I tried 3 different lockers, barely any worked, leather seat ripped and just a general unclean feel.
I will say the food was still to a good standard, and I like that they have moved away from the buffet breakfast. The staff were very friendly, and helpful, and you can tell they were trying their best. The rooms were also very clean.
Overall however this has gone downhill and some business decisions seem to be really strange and not fully thought out, particularly when you are paying £300 for a spa stay.
