We arrived around 3:30pm and there were quite a few people there.
Bathing fee is 600 yen, foot box is 10 yen return type, undressing locker is 100 yen return type, free basket, conditioner shampoo and body soap are provided.
Although I didn't have to wait in line for the washing area or the sauna, I got the impression that there were quite a few people in there.
There is one indoor bath, and the water is clear and colorless and leaves your skin feeling smooth.
The thermometer in the sauna says it's 90 degrees Celsius, which feels good, but the smell and smell is... harsh.
A cold bath is fine, but a sauna...
The open-air bath was also lukewarm, and there were no chairs for bathing in the open air, so I took a bath in the open air on a chair in the washing area in the open-air area.
I think it's a good facility for people who like lukewarm water, but I decided to take up a spot near the bathtub's spout, which was warm enough, so I had to vacate the bath quickly.

I ate what I wanted and walked
There are a lot of rest areas (benches), so I don't think you can sit down.
The sea urchin croquette was delicious
The contents are heavy in the thin-skinned clothes! I was very satisfied because the sea urchin was also included from the beginning to the end.
3 pieces of xiaolongbao for 390 yen

The deep-fried chicken has a salty taste that is taken out from the store
seems to go well with beer
It was very nice to be able to get freshly made food as it is fried after the order is placed.

It was hot and delicious

This is the area below Kumamoto castle with shops and exhibits. You can get sweet and savory snacks or a full meal. There is a museum dedicated to the effects of the earthquake on the castle and its surroundings. If would like to help out with the reconstruction, there is an office for donations. ¥10,000 or more will get you a card for free entry to the castle and other local sites and museums (check the list.) Reconstruction will take many more years and requires much in funding to get it completed. Anything you can add will help.

For tourist attraction, read food hall. If there are stalls selling anything other than food and drink I didn't find them.
The buildings are designed to look like traditional Japanese houses so are quite pretty. The Japanese have a culture of keeping places clean so there is not the sort of overflowing bins and rubbish you would see in the west.
There is an area where they put on shows, though we didn't see any so can't comment on the quality.
The main attraction of Sakura no baba Josaien is the fact it serves as the way into the castle and you can get a beer on the way.

Needless to say, it is a sightseeing and souvenir spot in Kumamoto Castle.
It's been 10 years since I went there when it was completed, but it's still bustling.
It was very Kumamoto-like that all the staff were uncles smoking in the smoking area, which made me laugh.
We hope for the early restoration of Kumamoto Castle.

Nice for the atmosphere, but its a typical tourist trap gift shop/eatery stall. It didnt help it was rainy the day we were there and forced to buy umbrella at the gift shop (although 500 yen for one isn't such a price gouge and about par with a convenience store). But if you are looking for a one stop shop for omiyage, this is the right place.

It’s a nice place to relax and grab a quick snack or lunch before or after you go to Kumamoto castle! There’s a variety of souvenir stores and food chains to try. I recommend getting the Izumi Matcha tea which the owner grows from his own farm.

This place was very nice to visit. At the top of the area is the Kumamoto Castle still in existence since the 17th century. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake left the castle with outer tiles fallen and structural damage. But the reconstruction is an ongoing process using technological advances of anti-earthquake techniques, so in some places you may see the rebuilding. At the foot of the castle is an area with speciality shops selling local specialties like horsemeat sashimi (basashi), mustard-stuffed deep-fried lotus root (karashi renkon), and sweet-potato dumplings (ikinari dango), I recommend eating them all and don't forget the ice cream too! A very good recommend!

Kumamoto Castle, located in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, is a reconstructed Japanese-style castle that sits atop a hill. Originally completed in 1607, the castle houses a history museum and covers an area of 5.3km. Despite ongoing construction work, it remains one of the three famous castles in Japan with thirteen structures designated as important cultural assets.
Exceeded all expectations! Really fun castle to explore!
The myths that you can read in the castle museum are so interesting! And you can download the castle app and read all the captions in English. The app also has an audio feature, but the reader is so slow and robotic, it would take ages to actually listen to it drone on and on. They should add a 2x speed option or something. But it is nice to read the captions in English so I recommend it.
Also the shopping area is really cool, and it feels like you are in the alley ways of the old castle town. There was even a samurai dance event that was cute.

Nice weather with cherry blossom session is great for a visit.
The castle is currently still under rebuild due to the earthquake a few years ago, causing major damage for the building and surroundings.
Luckily, the main structure remains, and we still can see a nice castle standing still up there!
We enjoy the surroundings and all the cherry blossom.

The renovation work is pretty much complete and I was able to view the castle from an elevated walkway wrapping around the outside. This is my second visit to Kumamoto castle. I came back in 2019 while it was still under repair and today the repairs were finished on the main and side keep but some other buildings are still in dire need of work after the 2016 earthquake. It is a reconstruction but it is still a beautiful castle. The unused of course does not have the taste and the character of the originals but there are so few left of the originals anyway.
For the time period the castle is on extended opening time until 9pm versus the usual 4:30pm closing time of winter. This allows amazing night pictures.
Nicolas weng kan — Google review
Even though it is a reconstruction of the original, it's a beautiful statue with rich history entrenched from it's very foundations to the top of the citadel. Despite being damaged by an earthquake back in 2016, the resilience of a people and the structure maintained for the purpose of revitalizing this city's touristic value, can very well be appreciated by all who venture here. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful standing castles in Japan.
Kingston Obike — Google review
Beautiful castle on par with Hemeji for size and grandeur. The interior is remade as a museum, but there are enough interactive exhibits and holdovers from the original construction that it still feels like a castle.
Displays are in Japanese with limited or no English, but still enjoyable and understandable. The dark interior is refreshing on a hot day.
While much of the castle is still under repair from earthquake damage, you can see some great views from the purpose-built viewing walkway.
Josh Diddams — Google review
Incredible castle. Just a shame that all explanations inside are exclusively in Japanese making it a quick visit inside for foreign tourists not speaking Japanese. Highly recommend a visit however if you are coming to Kumamoto.

wow! this castle is absolutely breathtaking !
halfway destroyed after a big earthquake a couple of years ago, they're about to rebuild the entire area matter of fact stone by stone.
They massively reinforced the entire castle from the ground up with a steel frame inside the masonry. therefore the interior is absolutely modern-style but still classic and original external... super splendid and massive work they've done. however it takes another 30+ years to rebuild the entire place after that huge earthquake.

The castle is just so elegant and rich in history. I was not expecting it to be very big. They reconstructed it after it was heavily damaged and they made the inside like a modern museum. I just had a challenge understanding the descriptions as there's no written english translation.
Entrance fee for the castle along is ¥800.
At the time I visited, there are many construction on-going around the area.
Suizenji Jojuen Garden, also known as Suizenji Garden, is a must-visit in Kumamoto. This tranquil garden showcases traditional Japanese landscaping and historic landmarks in miniature. Built by the famous Hosokawa family in the 17th century, it features a stunning Japanese landscape with a crystal-clear pond fed by mineral-rich underground water from Mt. Aso.
Beautiful traditional Japanese garden where you can walk around and enjoy its serenity dating back to 1632. It costs ¥400 to enter for adults and takes about 2 hours to walk around the garden grounds. There are 20 monuments and exhibits to view inside the garden. It was very peaceful here and I recommend you visit for a Zen experience.

Beautiful garden with very well maintained plants. It’s very calming walking around the park. Was lucky to catch red maple tree leaves still blooming at the end of November. I would imagine if I came earlier and all the trees were red, the view would be even more gorgeous. This garden wasn’t in our original plan but we have a half-day spared and it’s a great weather so we visited here. It’s a pretty nice Japanese garden and it seems to be prettier when during cherry blossom. However, it’s a calm place and can have a nice walk around. The dessert right in front of the entrance is worth a try! You can come visit while you have time!

A convenient tram ride to Suizenji Park stop and a short 5 minutes walk from the tram stop.
It was raining on the day I went and yet it was still so beautiful and calm in its own way. Even locals are taking their stroll in the garden with their umbrellas … I think that says alot about the ambience of the park.
There is also a cafe by the lake that you can have some tea and sweet treat. Great place for personal contemplation too.
There is also a cherry square where people visit every year for cherry blossoms viewing. Similarly, there are lots of maple trees for viewing during autumn. 4 seasons, different blooms, same garden.
If you are a tourist, get a one-day or 24- hour tram pass, show it to the counter to get a discount for the entrance! Instead of 400 Yen per pax, it was 360 Yen.

During our exploration, we had the pleasure of strolling through the garden with a sparser crowd than usual, enabling us to fully immerse ourselves in its exquisite environs. What particularly captured my gaze was the meticulously arranged symmetrical Tsukiyama, an artificial mountain that strikingly mirrors the silhouette of the renowned Mt. Fuji!

This garden is a really remarkable place. It has a replica Mount Fuji, built for the lord's entertainment several centuries ago. Suizenji Jojuen Garden. a traditional Japanese style garden, is probably one of the most famous travel attractions in Kumamoto. The Garden was created from 1636 and took about 80 years to reach the current garden facilities and style. In 1929, it was designated as a national treasure.
Inside the Garden, there are Izumi Shrine and Inari Shrine. There is also a tea house, Kojin-Denju-no-Ma Tea House, which is free for entrance visit, [tea service charge is separate]. The said tea house probably has the best spot for the visitors to enjoy the view of the pine trees and Pond whose water was provided by the under-ground springs of Mount Aso. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, after Kumamoto earthquake in 2016, the underground springs from Mount Aso stopped flowing to the Pond, and the Pond in Suizenji Jojuen is shrinking in size.
Visitors can take Kumamoto city tram from Kumamoto Train Station and get off at Suizenji Park and take a few minutes' walk to the Garden. The entrance fee is $ 400 Yen for the adult, and $200 for the children or students under 18.

although just a small patch of green inside the local residential area, it is a beautiful traditional Japanese garden, even on a cloudy day. we enjoyed a 2-hour slow walk and checked the delicate details from corner to corner. a tea room is by the pond, nice to stop over for afternoon tea too. just 15 minutes from the town (by train, or by car), and good parking is within walking distance. worth putting it as your destination too.

It was a very beautiful park and we went on a sunny day. they have the biggest Koi fish I’ve ever seen they really like to eat. The Koi fish were doing sort of little turns. It was cute. It’s actually not very big you can get around it kind of fast, but there are some shrines to go to and it’s a nice place where people wear kimonos to dress up there’s a nice walking path and a restaurant too, like the one where you sit on the ground and have a table in front of you to eat and there’s a souvenir shops and restaurants outside as well.

This is the star attraction for Kumamoto along with the castle. It’s not too large so it’s a relaxing and scenic walking experience. Landscaping is very similar to the colors of the rolling hills and farm land around kumamoto. You can feed the pigeons and koi if you like. Parking lots are near the garden for about 500 yen. It’s a pretty place and super relaxing to simply sit and take in the beauty.

Very beautiful garden. It imparts a sense of calm as soon as you enter the gate. It is a good place to sit and reflect on your life, meditate, contemplate nature, or just instagram posts in general if you’re into that.
Jumi — Google review
Beautiful garden, well maintained. I have good food and matcha + dessert at the restaurant and teahouse. More touristy than other gardens I went to, but not necessarily more special.

A nice peaceful garden. Not crowded so it has nice vibes~ Worth paying for the ticket!

It is one of the famous tourist spots here in Kumamoto, Japan. This garden is pretty tranquil and relaxing that can be enjoyed at any given time. They have a tea ceremony room facing the garden if you wanted to upgrade your trip here, plus they have a temple inside. The place is pretty convenient since it is near the train station. I highly recommend visiting the place if you have spare time.

Aso Cuddly Dominion is a charming zoo that houses numerous types of bears in simple enclosures. In addition, it offers an opportunity to pet bear cubs and dogs. Guests can also feed the bears and enjoy other fun activities within the premises. The petting area is particularly delightful with a chance to interact with baby goats and other animals. The zoo also boasts spectacular shows such as races of baby pigs at earlier times during the day.
Came here early in the morning for the helicopter, but stayed for the animals. Most of the animals are kind and you are allowed to pet or feed them. Food could be bought from vending machines in park including bear food. Decent cozy zoo and excellent helicopter ride of course.

Nice zoo. Cute animals. You can feed the bears. Nice activities inside. Dog petting area was great. We entered to get access to the Helicopter around aso which is inside. If you travel by JR sometimes the station info centre will give you 1000yen discount coupon per person.

We were there in winter, amidst a cold snap. So all the animals looked really cold and miserable. Perhaps summer would be better? But the place is a little rundown though.
Because it was a day trip from Kumamoto for us, not sure if it was worth the trip. The only saving grace was probably when it started to snow.
Shufen Liang — Google review
You can touch the baby goats and other animals. We went there only for the last hour they were open that day so we rushed to see animals. You can see races of baby pigs and other shows if you go at earlier times during the day!:)

Many animals to pet! The only reason is not 5 stars is because when you go to pet the bears you think you will get a little cub. They brought one really large cub, not small cuddly. It was heavy and constantly eating. It was half the size of the adults and it wasn't what you expected 🙃 still it was cool. I just think when you pay to pet the animal you should have a choice if you don't want to pet a big one and prefer a smaller one. My daughter went there excited and then she was terrified. Not ready for that. They will take photos for you but there were tears in every photo. 😢 So there was that. They have a nice selection of animals. And a show where they have birds of flight where they allow part of the audience to participate. That was fun. No photos allowed there, though, so just in memory. Lovely grounds and so nice to feed pet and interact with so many animals. Thank you for the nice experience. I recommend for families and anyone. Enjoy 😉 😘

Typical small zoo. The cage is too tiny for the bear, I really feel sorry for that. I like the pigs, they are funny and super cute when they are doing the running competition. The shows are quite good. The kids will like it especially the monkeys and dogs show (as known as James-kun and Pung-kun). And don't miss the Helicopter tour around mount ASO! Super great experience and the price is reasonable.
MITHUNA27 — Google review
We came here on a day trip to Aso and it is one of the most depressing zoos we have been to. The bears are kept in small concrete areas, and they force the baby bears to dress up and do photo ops with families. Other animals have it a bit better, although the park does not seem to be well-maintained. The small animals are kept in way too small cages (especially the rabbits).
Perhaps the only thing really worth coming to this park for is the helicopter tours of Mt. Aso, but considering the zoo itself and how the animals are treated, I'm not sure it's even worth it. I'd recommend just taking the bus to the volcano itself and walking around like everyone else.
Tyler — Google review
Absolutely heartbreaking.
Many of the animals didn’t have adequate space or even toys. Many of the bears were just in bare, concrete enclosures, with dirty moss floors. Many were just pacing like they were in prison. And hell, with the concrete everywhere they may as well have been in a prison.
Then there’s the cockatoo who didn’t even have a cage he could move in. The parrots tied to post, of which one was shivering and another had started plucking it’s feathers- a sign of unhappiness in birds.
Lastly, you can round out your visit seeing one lone capybara in an enclosure that’s like 90% water despite them being a social and mostly land based animal. Or this sad emaciated pony. Or the sun bear cubs which have been taken from their moms to roam around a tiny little box with just a literal kitchen pot of water and no toys or anything.
I want to believe the employees mean well here but I feel so bad for these animals. Had I seen this pictures I never would’ve come and this place needs serious work… Maybe if they had allocated more money to building animal pens then buying a helicopter or building a pagoda garden the animals would have a better quality of life. If you love animals please don’t go here.
Plain and simple, this is animal abuse. Can you imagine living on hard concrete day and night, your entire life, with nothing to keep you busy? In a tiny area with no room to run?

Fun overall. 2-3 hours are great. Shows were good even I don’t understand Japanese.
Horse riding is cool. My kid asked for the second time. Lots of bears to see and they were quite active.
When we arrived at 230pm the helicopter tickets already sold out. Turn out may be a blessing to save a lot of money because we could actually drive up there and see.
Some animals are indeed sad. Like the chimpanzee- feels lonely. Many animal is a one man bank.
Henry N — Google review
There were quite a few black bears. That was nice. (but it was also sad to see so many bears just locked up, especially 1 bear per cage - they seemed so lonely)
There is an animal show(?). It was very conflicting for me to watch that, considering animal rights.
But the place itself is well kept.
I think it would be good to visit with kids. There were group visitors and couples too.
It was raining a lot, but they had good umbrella there for visitors to borrow. That was good.

Unique volcano viewing experience on a helicopter!
DEFINITELY WOULD RECOMMEND all of you traveling to Aso to take this ride. We chose Plan E for the ride (50000 yen for max 3 pax, 20-min ride) as we have 3 people. 20 mins is enough for you to fly around the whole crater so that you can have a look of the volcano at different angles. Booking in advance is not available as it depends on the weather, but you may call on the morning of the day before you go to check whether there's time slot available (the staff know a little bit English so you don't need to worry much about communication).

I came here to take the Mt Aso helicopter ride. And the rest of family can enjoy the animals. The place looked a little tired, but this is inline with post-COVID era. Overall a good visit.
Daikanbo, a 936-meter-high mountain atop the outer rim of the north crater of Mt. Aso, offers breathtaking 360-degree views. Formerly known as Tomigahana, it was renamed by author Tokutomi Soho due to its stunning vistas. From this vantage point, visitors can admire the five peaks of Mt. Aso, the Kuju Mountain Range, and the Aso Caldera.
Most magnificent view in Kumamoto prefecture. I visited lots of national parks all over the world but this view is definitely comparable to them. If you come here in the early morning, you can enjoy a different atmosphere which I also liked.

Unfortunately it’s too foggy, wet, and windy on the day we visited that in our mind the question erupted like “Aren’t we emerging into the Silent Hill?” Howbeit, we could still manage to have fun out of it. Worth a visit though!
Kuju Mountains, located in Kyushu, Japan, offer a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the primeval forest of Narukogawa Gorge and the Shindo Falls. The mountain range includes Mt. Mitsumata and Mt. Waita, providing an awe-inspiring experience for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can take a 15-minute walk through the sky to immerse themselves in the grandeur of Kokonoe at a height that will make their legs shake.
There is a hiking trail from the parking lot at Akagawa Onsen (赤川温泉) and that only takes about 2.5hours to ascend to the peak of Mt Kuju. This trail is steep and technical, at parts requiring scrambling on boulders.
This trail is flanked by deciduous trees giving it a spooky forest vibe in Winter when I hiked, but it would be absolutely stunning in spring if you can handle the pollen!

Beautiful and long hike. I would recommend starting early, the parking lot at the bottom fills up quickly, so you’ll have to park along the roadside.
And the blueberry soft cream at the base is worth the hike!

Kinrin Lake is a charming location in southern Japan, popular for its picturesque views and morning mists. It features a small shrine and is particularly striking in winter when the warm water offers comfort to visitors seeking respite from the cold. However, due to high tourist traffic during summer, parking near the lake can be limited. Despite this, Kinrin Lake boasts stunning scenery that promises relaxation and tranquility to anyone who visits, making it a must-see destination on any Yufuin itinerary.
I wasn't really looking forward to going here but ended up really enjoying it! The scenery is so nice and the wind is so cool. The peaceful and tranquil setting is very relaxing, I recommend capping our Yufuin trip here if you will be visiting.

Amazing place. Great view! Check out the photos. A must visit place in Yufuin.
Please pay attention to the super narrow roads in this area. If you are driving a larger vehicle, you may get stuck in one of them and find it is hard to turn around as it is quite crowded.

Came to the lake at 5:30 for sunrise, it was overcast but still serene. There was no one around and even the fishes were just waking up. Loved the water and the tori gate.

Small lake in Yufuin city. The water is super clear, and we can even see swimming fishes. If you come early in the morning, you my experience steam rising form the surface caused by mixing of fresh water and hot springs.

I would not recommend going in the summer, its definitely way more beautiful in winter, whether or not it snows and you can drip your feet or hands in the warm water to get some warmth. Remember it's a tourist area so lots of people visit and parking is limited near the lake.

The road to the lake is narrow, allowing one car to pass each time in some sections. Don't drive unless you have to.
A few restaurants are located by the lake. It's a good idea to grab some food there enjoying the view.
The lake isn't large, and the view is not as good as expected if you visit there at noontime. There is a temple at the end of the walking trail worth visiting, and washrooms are nearby.
You would see a huge cedar tree beside the temple.

Came on a Wednesday afternoon and it was a bit crowded with tourists. The lake was smaller than expected, and the water was ripply so I couldn’t catch the reflective scenic moment! Highly suggest those who plan to visit to come in early morning for a quieter and better view, as recommended by others.

It was hopeless to find a car parking on the public holiday so we had a walk from the town centre, took about 20mins. The street was packed and hard to walk due to many people. The lake was small but lovely to walk around.

Beautiful scenic lake, located about a 15-20 minute walk from the train station. It’s quite small and feels more like a pond. We visited on a weekday in spring, and it wasn’t much crowded. The lake’s water is a mixture of cold and hot spring water, causing steam to rise from the lake’s surface. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see the mist though, as this only happens in autumn/winter.

Kinrin Lake is a beautiful place to check out while you're in Yufuin, I think the weather definitely affects the beauty of it. I was here during a rainy/cloudy time so it wouldn't have been as good as a sunny day but I still had a great walk around it!
There's also a small shrine to check out which is nice cause the torii gate reminds me of Hiroshima on Miyajima Island! I hope many others like me can enjoy their time here!

We visited the lake for autumn leaves on November 13, 2023. There were many people and cars, but the views were amazing. Parking was a challenge due to the crowd and narrow streets. Going down to the bottom could get 400 yen per day, but we parked at 500 yen per hour before the congestion. There were also long lines for famous restaurants. As our purpose was to enjoy the scenic views and take photos, we were fine not fighting for a parking spot or a meal.

Walking around Yufuin, you would might notice lots of running streams along the roads. Most of them lead to or came from this lake. It’s a tiny lake but still stunning nonetheless. The water was so clear and there’s always a slight hint of mist running on the surface. The main entrance is where all the tourists go through and can get quite crowded but if you walk around a little, you’ll get less busy but equally stunning areas.

Beautiful lake (I did see a little of the famed mist in the dawn). There is a beautiful quiet Shinto shrine on the southeastern shores.

Absolutely beautiful. But bear in mind that this is a very popular touristy place, hence the crowd, and narrow roads if you want to get there by car.

Recommend going earlier in the morning to see the steam flowing around on the surface of the lake. The winter cold mornings brings out the steam more and creates quite a serene and surreal lake of nature.

Beppu "Jigoku Meguri" Hells Tour is a famous hot springs attraction with themed fenced pools and animal enclosures. The tour consists of two groups, one at Kannawa and the other further north. The Kannawa group includes unique hells like Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Shira-ike Jigoku, and Kamado Jigoku.
Fantastic hot spring ponds! Get the book for $20pp so you can see all the ponds. Many gift shops along the way...like 4 at least. You can walk to all of the ponds really. Not a bad walk to the last two, which are a little further away...just take the bus back. You can eat onsen steamed foods at one of the pond areas too...which I highly suggest!

This is probably the most famous attraction in town and could be worth a visit if you have a day in the town.
There are seven locations that you have to move between yourself. 5 are close together and the remaining 2 are a few km away so you need to drive or take public transportation to get there. A couple of the pools were impressive and a few less so. Especially the ones with animals were a bit sad due to the cramped cages.
Martin Lundholm — Google review
No need to buy the ticket for all 7 sites…2 is enough, either main one, or with fish. Don’t spend time to travel from location to the other, whichever pair you go to is enough. If you have kids, go to one with fish. Crocodiles are sad…25 animals in one small concrete pond. Geyser one is boring-skip it. It’s just water shooting up for a few minutes. Nothing else to see there. The red one is also kind of lame and takes longer to get there then see the pond. All in all, it’s just pools of water that you look at. Nothing that great. Pleasant place to walk around, take a foot bath, and buy souvenirs if you need to kill time or take a break.

We weren’t going to visit all the locations so opted for the pay as you go. In order to make it worthwhile, you would have to visit 5 or more if you’re going to get the all access pass.
We spent an hour on the first one and only had time to visit one more.
This site was great. Large and had plenty of photo taking opportunities.

Super fun experience, highly recommend going to this one if you have time for only one hell. The parking is free and you can access five of the seven hells from this one parking lot. Umi is definitely my favorite of all the hells! Make sure to check out the lotus greenhouse as well!

Probably 5th time to come here, never getting bored of this Tiffany Blue and the dynamic white smoke chasing you around. They have cool souvenirs that you can buy only here like Blue Beer, and they have a glass house with blue water lilies and lilac ones, truly amazing. Then you can find the flowers of the season, picturesque red traditional Shrine doors ⛩️and they serve surprisingly cheap desert and coffee to sit down and watch the crowd. Really the best of all Hells! Bonus is the mini Blood Hell that you can see here and don't need to go all the way to the original one that is quite far.

If visiting Beppu, the hells tour is an incredibly enjoyable way to spend a few hours. The different hells all offer something different in terms of water colour, attractions and scenery; taken as a whole, they are thoroughly enjoyable.
Buy the book of seven tickets at the first you visit in order to speed up entry to the remaining pools.
Be aware that some of the hells showcase animals in less-than-ideal conditions; the white hell and the crocodile hell were quite upsetting to see large animals in very small and sparsely furnished areas.

It is a nice place to visit but I think there are so many more genuine interesting places in Kyushu and Beppu hells is not in the top 5!
The hells are nothing special, and it gets boring quite quickly.
I think it could have been designed and planned way better.

We did all seven Hells and they were very good but also bad. The worst was Oniyama Jigoku which features crocodiles confined into small cages, and one larger which is so crowded that the poor animals lay on top of each other. The crocodiles, obviously, has nothing to do with the hot springs other than the fact that the water in which they live, is partially heated by hot spring water. A terrible experience.

Interesting, worth to visit. One should pay 2200 yen for all jigoku or hot spring. Japanese really develop all hot spring for public interest. It took about 1.30 to 2 hours to visit all springs.

We did all 7 hells and the first five were lovely to see. The last two are a few km away so most people bus it, which means waiting for a while to get the bus, with what feels like a hundred others.
The hot springs were pretty to see, I loved the story for each. The steamed eggs were as egg-spected (giggle). The final hotspring (geyser) was a bit of anticlimactic and most people left after 30 seconds to get ahead of the crowds for the bus.
Overall, I'm glad I did it but not sure I'd do it again.

It’s very touristy and in my opinion not really worth it unless maybe you’re already spending a night or two in Beppu. It was a foggy, rainy day but our spirits were not dampened to see this crystal blue hot springs. Due to the rain, the beauty of the site might not be fully captured. A section of the path had to be closed off as it was too slippery to walk on. It is beautiful hells in #Beppu #Japan , the "sea hell" features a pond of boiling, blue water. In its spacious gardens, there are a few smaller, orange colored hells and a clear water pond with lotus flowers whose large leaves are strong enough to carry small children.

Perhaps the most popular of the “hells” in Beppu, this one offers a large cobalt-blue pool as well as a smaller rusty-red one to enjoy looking at. It’s also kind of fun when the wind blows the sulphur-smelling steam over you.
I’d like it if there was a bit more information provided about them, and having to walk through the gift shop to get to the main pool feels a little cheeky, but an enjoyable experience overall.

Very nice attraction place to see and take pictures of Japan hot spring. The sulphuric smell is strong (similar to smelly drain). Go there during cold season so that the steam or water vapor is nicely captured. The wind are strong at there area. This park is really interesting. The natural hot springs are an amazing natural phenomenon that you really have to see. The foot bath was really nice, and the souvenir shop had interesting things worth buying. The price for tickets and souvenirs was a little high, but understandable for such a unique place. We arrived early in the morning, and there was no line at that time, but as we were leaving around noon, there was a long line. I'm not sure if you can buy tickets in advance or not.

My favorite of all the hells and would recommend. The aqua blue water is beautiful as well as the surrounding landscaping. We just missed the azaleas blooming season as their year spring bloom seems to be a couple weeks earlier than normal.
At the ticket office, one can buy an entrance ticket to a single hell or the entire set.

Interesting place and smells like ammonia. You’d have to pass through the souvenir shop to get to the jigoku. Get the 7 hells pass for 2,000 yen at wander compass at beppu station. It is way worth than paying individually (450yen) for each place.
There is foot bath in some of the places so bring your own tissues or towels if you’d like to use them.
5 of them are in walking distance to each other. remaining 2 you need to take a bus to and honestly you can skip it is nothing much.
I actually went to the other two further away because of the stamp collection which I thought would give you something upon completion as I read on google. But no, I was greeted with disappointment when I got to know the stamped paper was it.

The most beautiful spot in the group of jigoku onsen. The hot water color keep the blue and will become deeper or lighter depend on the weather. Especially, you can see the tropical plants in here. The beautiful season to visit be spring (March, April) and fall (November, December)

Also known as the “Sea Hell,” it is the largest of Beppu’s Hells. It emerged after an explosion of a volcano 1,200 years ago and features striking cobalt-blue waters. Despite being as touristy as the others, I found it to be more authentic and less crowded. There are also a couple of smaller, red-colored pools as well as a garden, a shrine, and a tropical greenhouse. If you’re short on time, this is probably the only one worth visiting.

Very interesting sight of such unique natural wonders of vastly different appearance. Three things to keep in mind: some of the springs are quite far from each other, so total time to see all 7 is about 2h. In the middle of summer, this is a physically demanding task. They try to add shade and some mist machines so it’s a bit less hard but it’s still hard. Price is about 500¥/person/spring but you can get a package deal at 2200¥ for all 7. We decided to see only 3 (the blue one, red one, and grey mud one) and we’re quite satisfied. Don’t buy the package unless you are truly committed to seeing all of them.

This is a good stop for something interesting from planet earth. You can pay by the location 1/7 but honestly the last two are such a hassle to get to by bus with wait times and crowds I would advise to just skip them unless you can do a cab or have a private car. The site overall is very clean and interesting; its all self guided self paced. I did not care for the crocodile enclosures because I am personally against zoo type environments. The other 4 at the top were all interesting in thier own way. The greenhouse seemed overlooked but was quite nice as well. The wife likes the stamp game for her souvenir book and they were good stamps by her report.

One out of nine beppu’s tour - Umi Jigoku. The zen garden has a magnificent landscape. What is extraordinary is the cool hot spring and light blue. It looks like it’s not hot, but it’s 98 degrees Celsius. It was piping hot. There’s also a red hot spring towards the exit area and mini Tori gates. The souvenir shop is located in the middle of the place and accessible before the light blue.
They have unique souvenirs from candies, biscuits, stationery and toys. The place has a cafe as well, perfect to take a rest from the tour. I got the blue soda drink. It’s excellent and refreshing.
A wonderful and interesting place to visit when visiting Beppu, either for a day trip or a few days stay.

There is a special exhibition in each “hell”. In this most visited “hell”, the special exhibits are royal water lilies, which bloom at our visit on November 14, 2023. The greenhouse is powered by the “hell”. I love water lilies. These royal ones with big green crowns are gems in this “hell”. I was so happy to see these water lilies.

A beautiful onsen that is far too hot to enter, though you can admire it for its beautiful colours and the massive plumes of steam that it shoots into the sky.
¥2200 for entrance tickets to visit all the onsen like this in the area.
Nathan f — Google review
The Umi Jigoku is a relatively larger hot spring park compared to the others. Other than the amazingly huge pool of hot spring near the end of the park which fumes a lot of hot air, there’s also a nice compound showcasing how they grow tropical plants with water from the hot spring.
The park itself is very well maintained and has beautiful pathways. The gallery in the middle of the park is also pretty interesting, highlighting the history of the park and the Beppu’s culture around the spring.
This park is one of the 7 in the Jigoku group. Not all parks are part of this group. You can buy a group ticket to see all the parks or you can buy entrance to each park individually.

Strongly recommend you to bring your own hotel for onsen. Don't bother paying the entrance tickets to cook eggs or steamed bun.
There is a ticket booth on the left side (after the cafe), that's the entrance to the onsen. Walk into the onsen place, pay via the vending machine. Private onsen 60min only 2000 yen. Worth the experience.
If you're looking for a delicious and centuries-old Traditional Jigoku Mushi restaurant in Beppu, look no further than Jigoku Mushi Kobo. This popular spot is perfect for enjoying your food steamed by the thermal springs – making it one of the landmarks you don't want to miss during your stay in Japan.
This restaurant serves food cooked from the hot steam from the area. It's a totally different experience dining here. Some tourists even try theirs hands cooking in the steamy hot kitchen with a constant flow of boiling steamy water.

It was a totally different experience!✨
You get to cook food (which you can select from numerous options : Vegetarian ✅) in the onsen steam♨️
They guide you throughout the process.
Very friendly service though!
As it is a very famous restaurant, the waiting time is 1hr on an average.
So first grab your ticket, submit it on the counter and then you can roam about and hour and come back!

The super-duper disappointing experience! Firstly, the process of ordering food was chaotic and unlike other typical Japanese restaurants. There were absolutely no instructions. Basically, it was a semi-self-service setup, and the prices were quite high. I initially thought that the food would be cooked using geothermal heat, similar to steaming, which should preserve the original flavors. However, to my surprise, the vegetables had no sweetness at all, and both the dumplings and siu mai were too soggy and soft. Only the corn and chicken were somewhat enjoyable. 😩
Wing Yin Kwok — Google review
Great experience. Choose and buy your dish ticket from the vending machine. The staff sill give you plates stacked in a pile and lead you to the steaming area. They guide you to put the food in and hand you a timer for when its done. Ordered the sea dish combo with a tasty chicken rice addition. Most of the meat and vegetables tasted great even though they were only steamed. Needs to be eaten fast cuz cold boiled veggies are not fun to eat.
Sutirtha Das — Google review
It was an unique experience. Steaming your own food. Food was okay. It was steamed so it was healthy. And the sweetness of the vegetables was nice.
Order process:
Go all the way inside to write down your name and get a number tag.
Order your food from the machine and get the receipt
Wait for your number to be called. Ours took 50 mins.
Collect your food once your number is called. They will give you your food and a timer and tell you your steaming pot number.
Then you proceed to your steamer and steam your food!
There are people there to help you and explain the process to you.
Alexis Yeoh — Google review
Tourist trap. We ordered the seafood set meal and meat set meal. Each was 1700yen. It was WAY overpriced for what was given. I thought we were paying for the experience, but at the cashier, the staff shoved a calculator and a laminated piece of paper in our faces, telling us to cough up another 200yen each. She didn’t even bother to explain properly until I questioned her. Apparently, there’s a price to use their steamers, 200yen per person! It was ridiculous. The overpriced cost of 1700yen should more than enough cover the “steaming”.
Worse, the food items. Basically the shop gives an experience of putting food into a traditional steamer. But that’s it. All the food items are steamed for 15 mins. This meant the meat and seafood were both way overcooked, the hard vegetables like potatoes were not cooked enough.
Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrot, corn etc were all not sweet. Bland and tasteless. The baby cabbage tasted spoilt.
The rice was nondescript too. It was way too mushy and bland.
Overall, without the bottle of black sauce, one would find it hard to stomach the food.
Conclusion: highly not recommended unless you just want to try the whole “tourist checkpoint” experience here.

I really like the food here since it is all steamed. I think you should come here for the experience itself and not for the food! Would definitely recommend this as a must-eat spots when you are in Beppu! It is also conveniently located near the Kannawa bus station - 1 minute walk from it! I came around 5/5.30 and didn't have to wait at all!

Awesome experience to cook the food using onsen steam. The staff gives you instructions on how to open and place the food in the steam oven. The food itself is just okay. Since it is just steamed vegetables and meat I was able to eat gluten-free
pinderu — Google review
There was a long line but we took the number first and strolled around so when we came back we could just enter right away. You can buy the food from the vending machine and you will be able to put it inside the steam. Once you wait for 15 minutes, you can take it out and start eating. Pretty cool experience.
Butang — Google review
Come here for the novelty factor. Self-cooking your food using volcanic steam. Food itself is just ok. Seafood from frozen. Pricing model is a bit odd, with a separate ¥400 steaming fee. Discourages smaller dish only purchases as you want to amortise the fee across more or larger purchases. Should probably be built into food pricing though.
Jason Chuei — Google review
A unique experience to steam your food by utilizing heat from the hot spring. The queue was long with an hour wait. However, you would be given a numbered ticket with a return time. I found it good that we could wander around the area. Beppu is a town of hot springs. I found it interesting to see steam coming up from everywhere and a lot of chimneys making use of the heat underground. About the food in the restaurant, it was average. But I recommend the experience, which is unique in Beppu.
Belinda Chan — Google review
Great experience, a must do in Beppu. The restaurant has vegetarian and vegan options, but the only vegetarian sauce if the ume (plum) sauce, so make sure you ask for this one. You get a number at the reception, order on the machine, take a footbath just outside if you have to wait, and come back to make your food.
The negative thing is that when you come back to give your order receipts to the receptionist, you suddenly have to pay 400 yen for a steaming basket. This was unexpected and honestly a bit strange. I wouldn't expect this in Japan and was quite disappointed by the lack of communication beforehand about this.
However, the food was good, cooking it yourself is a nice experience (don't burn your face when you open the cooking thing) and the price for the food is decent.
Hannah Löwenhardt (HanaVentures) — Google review
A good experience steaming your own food. My tip is to order the food items ala cart. Do not order the 1 person set. Instead go for the naturally tastier food items such as mushrooms with butter, the seafood etc. The plain steamed vegetables will turn out bland. In addition, you can purchase 2 sauces for 100-200 yen. We got the mala and spicy miso, it added to the enjoyment of the meal.
BRYAN POH — Google review
Cool place to visit. The waiting time is long during rush hour. Unique experience to enjoy the steamed food. We ordered the seafood pack and meat one. The portion was not big. Steaming our own food took 15 mins resulting in the shrimp and meat was not tender anymore. However, still a once in a lifetime experience. There’s also onsen water to try.

We’ve been there not to expect about good taste but for experience. This is self service restaurant and I would like to share the process of purchase :
1. Get a queue number from the staff at the counter.
2. Select/purchase the meal you need at the machine. Every order must be on top with a pot cost 400 yen.
3. Waiting for your number calling and give the coupon of the food purchased.
4. To collect the food and food counter. And you will get the number of the pot.
5. Go to the pot number you got then the staff will guide you to cook it.
6. Select the table available and wait until the time.
7. Comeback to your pot to get the food once finished.
OMG! Sound fun right 🤣🤣🤣
Pina Pina — Google review
Get a number from the counter first before getting your meal ticket from the machine. There will be a wait before your number is called, and you can hand them your number tag and meal ticket. After you hand it to them, they will start getting your food ingredients ready and give you steam box number, timer, etc. head to the steam room, and there will be someone there to help you. You just put the food in, when the timer goes off, take it out, that's all. The food is fresh but tasteless, and there is no other seasoning but soy sauce on the table. Bring your own seasoning if you can't it bland food. Otherwise, it's a cool experience.
The Kanmon Strait, located between the Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu, serves as a vital route for both leisure boats and cargo ships. This strait holds historical significance as it was the stage for the Battle of Dannoura, which had a profound impact on Japan's history. Beneath the strait lies an underground tunnel that spans approximately 780 meters, allowing people to traverse between the two islands in about 15 minutes.

The Akama Shrine is a Shinto temple that pays tribute to an emperor from the 12th century. The shrine boasts a striking crimson main gate and offers beautiful vistas. While some areas of the temple may be closed off at times, it is generally free and accessible to all visitors seeking a peaceful respite. This shrine is popular with an ancient Earless Houichi tale, which is based on a little Emperor called Antoku's tragic death in a battle on the local water called dan-no-ura in 1185. The 6year old emperor was supported by the losing side, an unfortunate thing, and on the run. The Minamoto, the winning side caught up, had a battle then the courtiers picked him up before jumping into the sea with the boy. The shrine honors the Taira cran, the lost side. Now Houichi was an excellent Lute (Biwa) player. So good that the Taira ghosts turned up and guided this blind trainee monk to their graves for the own little concert. Houichi was happy enough to be led out every night to play for a seemingly noble crowd but his mentor monk realised Houichi was fading away and one night, caught him playing in front of the graves. What did this mentor do, to save the boy? You can Google it! 😁 Lovely place with a chrysanthemum as the emblem to show a member of Royal family tests here.

Kanmon Bridge is a significant suspension bridge that links the westernmost part of Honshu, Japan, with the northernmost port of Kyushu. Completed in Showa 33, it has a total length of 780 meters and is exclusively for vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the nearby submarine tunnel to cross.
suspension bridge that spans the Kanmon Strait, connecting the cities of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture and Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The bridge is a prominent landmark in the region and is widely regarded as one of the most impressive bridges in Japan.
The bridge is approximately 1.2 kilometers long and stands at a height of 47 meters above the water. The view from the bridge is stunning, with the sparkling blue waters of the Kanmon Strait stretching out in all directions. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the island of Tsushima in the distance.
One of the best ways to experience the Kanmon Bridge is by taking a leisurely drive across it. The road is smooth and well-maintained, and there are plenty of pull-off areas where you can stop and take in the view. There's also a pedestrian walkway on the bridge, which is a great option if you want to take your time and really soak in the scenery.
Another popular way to experience the Kanmon Bridge is by taking a boat tour that passes underneath it. This is a great way to get a different perspective on the bridge and really appreciate its scale and grandeur.
Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to the Kanmon Bridge if you're in the Fukuoka or Yamaguchi area. It's a beautiful and impressive structure that's definitely worth seeing in person

The main reason why we came to Hofu. It is a beautiful shrine overlooking Hofu City. There are parking lots near and above the entrance, so you can easily find a parking spot. The Front entrance of the Shrine is filled with shops and restaurants. The top also has vendors with finger foods.
The view from the front of the torii gate at the foot of the mountain was amazing. I imagine that nighttime would be a beautiful site with lanterns lit up. There were few people and it was quiet and a beautiful shrine.

One of the best gardens in Yamaguchi. I’ll take this over Shukkeien in Hiroshima any day. Large sprawling grounds with massive tōrō (stone lanterns) and scenic paths that are great for exploring. For a first time visitor by car, this is the safer and easier place to park your car. You will have to take a public bus from this center to the gateway to the Iwami-Ginzan area, which is basically one narrow street stretching from lower part of the creek to the upper part of the creek. The bus ride would cost yen 240 (US$2 or less), while the car park was free and abundant at this center.
It turned out that getting a rental bicycle (electric powered one at yen 700 for two hours) at a former gas station near the lower bus stop would be ideal lakes you enjoy uphill walk without shades for 2 km or so.

Great center that introduces to the whole history of the mining region in quite an interactive way! Almost all the information is accompanied with English translation which is very nice. It is only 20 min walk from the center of the charming Omori village.
So, if anyone is interested, I had a perfect day taking a 10:15am bus from Hiroshima directly to this center, learned about mining, walked to Omori and browsed it around a bit (it is gorgeous!), and from there took a 15 min ride (google maps knows it all) on a very cute small electric bus to the Ryugenji mine shaft (open to public without guides). And finally hiked from there for three hours through majestic forest to one of the most authentic hot springs in the country in Yunotsu.

In this place, you will get the idea of how people lived in the past around Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. Also there were some tools that people used for their living. Before come to mine area, better you visit this place first.
The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, which dates back to 1526, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its minimal environmental impact. Visitors can explore the remnants of this historic mine and see first-hand how it impacted Japan's economy through trade with Europe. The well-preserved roads, tunnels, samurai houses, and artifacts offer a glimpse into the past and allow visitors to appreciate the hard work undertaken by laborers to extract silver in challenging conditions.
We visited this place on 8 october 2023. The day was little bit rainy but didn't interrupt our visit to this UNESCO World heritage site.
We started our journey from Yamaguchi city. The way to Shimane was also nice and enjoyable.
It was a guided tour. First, we visited the art museum. It is recommended to visit before you go to the site. You can know the history thoroughly. Then it will be easy to you to visualize the 500 years old silver mine civilization.
The place is quite thrilling full with history. You can see 500 years ago Barbara shop, the house of Samurai, old house and court building. Here, everything was kept as you can imagine yourself and go back 500 years ago.
Although we can not visit the actual mine area the trip was worthy as well. Strongly recommended.

This was a fun experience. If you come here expecting to go deep under ground in a deep, vast tunnel you will be let down. The tunnel is nice to walk through but it's not the most thrilling thing in the world so its best to keep your expectations low. What really made this experience special was hiring a bicycle and riding through the beautiful traditional buildings in the town which leads up to the mine.

Its a 2.5 km easy walk with things to see along the way (temples, shrines and beautiful scenery and toilets). The mine cost is 500 yen and foreigners get a discount. A must see.

I really enjoy when visiting Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. This place, become UNESCO heritage site because here you will find the trace of the glory silver mine 400 years ago. Roads, tunnels, Samurai's house, and artifacts as remnants of silver mine still exists until now. This place is conserved well until now. Had trade with Europe, prove this silver mine activity affected Japan's economy at that time. Tour into the tunnel will give you the idea how the labors work to get the silver. It really hard to work under having water problems, and the shortage of light and fresh air in the past. Please visit Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, you will not regret!!

This is a great place to take a walk and it is a important place during Japanese history. It provide funds during 15~16 century.
The Major issue is lack of English resource. It is hard for Foreign visitors to understand the picture by using audio guide. As a UNESCO site, I think it is reasonable to training small number of English guide.

This isn’t the correct place—go to Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft instead—that is the center of Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine.
Ohayō Phil — Google review
Guess I’ll be the lone foreigner voice of dissent. The ONLY mine shaft you can enter without a guide is about 500 meters long, has very few informative signs (Japanese or English), and can be finished in 15 minutes. There are many more on the town map, but those are simply inaccessible former mine shafts.
There is one more you can enter only with a tour; we reserved the tour but it was cancelled because a single tree had fallen on the path between the mine center and the mine. I guess no one in the park had a chainsaw, nor could we have just walked around or over it.
The town IS pretty. Then again, I live in central Japan and have seen just as nice in Takayama, Gujo-Hachiman, and many “Juku” towns. It’s hardly unique. And that map… once again, it listed about 15-20 stores in town. Four were open: a tofu shop, a local snack maker (2 items only, which weren’t bad), a TINY souvenir place, and one (admittedly cool) restaurant and store.
We were done in under 2 hours and had almost no lasting memories. There’s nothing *wrong* with this place, but it does NOT meet my expectations of a “world heritage site”. There simply isn’t enough here to see or do to justify that label. If you go and expect nothing at all, it’s ok. The museum is nice. If you go and expect “world heritage”…. Well, you’ll find why this is one of the lesser visited sites in Japan.
Floyd McDaniel II — Google review
Very interesting to see how people lived in the Edo period. Foreigners get a discount. We got a free tour guide but others seemed not to get one so I think that it is just luck. The mines are very interesting but you should watch out for your head as if you are tall you might hit it on the ceiling. Went in the summer and the mines were a lot colder than it was outside. The nearby village is also very pretty; it is almost like you traveled back in time. Would recommend people who like geology or history.

I think the main attraction is the suspension bridge. There are mainly two routes. One is a barrier-free passage that crosses a suspension bridge and is accessible to wheelchair users. Although it is built on the edge of a cliff, it is well maintained and there is no problem. The other route is to go down to the riverside and walk along the river without crossing the suspension bridge.
The barrier-free passage is located quite high above the river, so if you want to see the valley up close, you'll be disappointed. If you want to see it up close, it's best to go down and see it.
There are stairs along the way, so you can go down.
We recommend going when the weather is nice, as the scenery is better.

Izumotaisha-Mae Station is located in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, and is known for its spiritual energy and historical significance. The shrine, also called Izumo Oyashiro, has a main hall dedicated to Okuninushi, a deity associated with the Transfer of Land. The station building itself is an attraction with intricate designs and houses a preserved train that was once Japan's oldest working vehicle.
The train station and its surrounding area is also absolutely stunning! Lovely view!

(Translated by Google) It was a fun station with lots of discoveries. This is an old station building, with elaborate designs in places. It's fun to look at it for a while.
Outside, there is a preserved train that was once Japan's oldest working vehicle, and it's great to be able to go in and out as you like. I was surprised that the door was manual until the end.
The ticket vending machine at the station accepts credit cards and various code payments, and I think it is the best ticket vending machine in the country! ! However, it sometimes breaks down and cannot be used, which is a bit disappointing.
Outside, there was a municipal public wired phone that was different from NTT. Although it seems to have finished its role, this public telephone has a feel of the times. I'm glad I got to see it before it was removed.
It's a short walk to Izumo Taisha. Since there are only a few trains, we recommend checking the train for your return trip before visiting the shrine.

Taishachō Kizukiminami, Izumo, Shimane 699-0711, Japan
The Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a remarkable white structure that offers visitors a spectacular vantage point to admire the coastal and inland regions. The observation deck at the top provides panoramic views of the surrounding areas, making it an ideal destination for sunrise or sunset viewing. It's important to be cautious when ascending as you must remove your shoes, and some areas can be slippery. Additionally, there is a challenging path for those seeking physical activity.
A beautiful lighthouse and coastal area, I would especially recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset. We enjoyed going to the top of the lighthouse, but definitely watch your footing as you have to take off your shoes and it can be quite slippery at some points. The view from the top is beautiful though! We watched the sunset from the cliffs below and it was stunning.

A beautiful white lighthouse that is surrounded by a nice walkway that leads to many bird viewing platforms. The view here is wonderful. There is a small museum that depicts the inner workings and building of the lighthouse.

Very beautiful view!
It is advisable to go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
Not many people come here during weekday, so it was nice to to have the whole place for yourself.
There is a trekking path nearby if you want to enjoy the view of the sea.
The lighthouse has 6-7 floors, the last stair was really scary to climb. But it is worth climbing to the top. Beautiful view with breezing wind.
There are some restaurants and cafes nearby too.

Beautiful lighthouse and amazing view! This place can get windy so be extra careful with your steps. Stairs are also narrow. Plenty of shops and restaurants are available with clean toilets and a big parking lot. I recommend visiting the place on a weekday to avoid the crowd.

I added the lighthouse to my trip to the Hinomisaki Shrine. I am glad I did. It was a bit of a climb to get to the lighthouse, but all paved roads. It was well worth the climb. The views were spectacular and the breeze was a relief from the heat and humidity of the day.
The stairs inside the lighthouse are fine to go up. Going down I took off my socks to prevent slipping. You will have to remove your shoes at the ticket window and place them in a cubby.
Afterwards I wandered around the Daisen-Oki National Park and looked at the water, the rocks, and enjoyed the serenity of it all!

Nice place needs to take thirty minutes bus or car drive from the Izumo taisha. You can enjoy a great horizon on sea with sea breeze. Although it would be a bit high, 39m from ground with no cover, still worth going as a spot in Izumo region.
At least you can go here with visiting the shrine and having high quality seafood Don as well here.

The lighthouse is pretty nice, but we also really enjoyed walking around the path behind it!
There are some beautiful views and the rock formations are really cool. We spent way more time here than we thought we would.
Definitely recommend walking around the backside of the lighthouse.
They had plenty of parking and it was free.
I believe you do have to pay a fee if you want to go to the top of the lighthouse, which we did not do.

The Shimane Prefecture Ancient Izumo History Museum is a modern space that showcases excavated bronze artifacts and remains from the 1200s Izumo Grand Shrine, serving as a testament to the historical and archeological significance of the region. The museum's standout exhibits include bronze bells from the "Dotaku" area dating back to 2nd century BC and swords collected from another archeological site, reflecting meticulous attention paid to archaeological value.
This is simply a museum built to express the historical and archeological values in the Izumo region. Much attention has been paid to the archaeological value of the Izumo Taisha temple. The most important exhibits in the museum are the bronze bells collected from the "Dotaku" area (from the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD) and the collection of swords collected from another archeological site. This can be pointed out as a well-established museum where the design and presentation of the museum's exhibitions, audio descriptions, and other museum principles.

Tranquil and well organized museum. Very friendly staff, ready to help out in English. English audio option is a bit limited, especially in the stories of myth section (which I have the most interest in). Cafe Maru at L2 offers generous portion of delicious food (I was tempted to try their dessert, but was too full!). The cafe has great view, making the meal more enjoyable. The area surrounding is beautiful, great for taking a stroll. If you want to enjoy the view but tired of walking, go to L3, there are two benches facing the outdoor. If you exit from the west gate, there is a shortcut to Izumo Taisha, covered with well trimmed bonsai and flowers (save the trouble of walking up hill)

Quite a large and comprehensive museum about the history of ancient Izumo and the surrounding area. Definitely worth a visit for anyone who likes history and culture. Foreign visitors can get a discount after showing their passport or other document. Some panels have English, and most videos have English subtitles. It is located very close to Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. There's is a small cafe and museum shop located inside.

Although Shimane prefecture has a sensitive political dispute with Korea, the exhibits were pretty much objective and the staff were nice, which made me feel pacifist vibes are mainstream in the civilian sector. A cool 358 piece bronze dagger that was found at once was displayed in the exhibit room, and that also indicates Korea and Japan were linked tightly and friendly back in the ancient days (the style of dagger is only found in Korean peninsula and Japan). Many cool archaeological stuff are there.

This is a fascinating museum with a great deal of interesting artefacts and a variety of interactive exhibitions. There are anime videos set in the past, light-up maps of the region to show archaeological sites, and even a myth library! Well worth a visit.

Fantastic museum, and as a foreigner, it’s really great that ALL the video displays have optional English subtitles. And I do mean ALL of them. I would note that the gift shop and theater close a bit before the main exhibits, so if you plan on staying til close or get there late, you’ll have to choose between them and the exhibits themselves.

Izumo-taisha is a renowned and historic Shinto shrine complex in Japan that houses an array of sacred artifacts and hosts various cultural festivals. Being the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan, it holds great cultural significance, surpassed only by the eminent shrine at Ise. Despite being visited during rainy and windy conditions, the experience was still awe-inspiring as the forest surrounding the shrine was impressive.
Date visited: 2022/04/29
It was raining and very windy, but it was a very beautiful experience nonetheless. The forest around the shrine is very impressive. I loved the walkway going into the shrine. The center of the long walkway is always reserved for the gods, so I really liked how it was roped off to prevent people from walking there. I appreciated that.
Don't be like me and think the first shrine you approach is the main shrine and feel disappointed. The main shrine is further inside to the left. (Lol)
Jen Freel — Google review
One of the oldest and most significant Shinto shrines in Japan. This shrine has the largest shimenawa sacred straw rope located at one of it's main entrances. It measures 13.5 meters long and weighs around 5 tons. I really enjoyed my time here, parking and entering the shrine were both free. In addition, there are lots of restaurants and shopping areas located in the vicinity.
I highly recommend visiting this shrine if you have the time, it was one of the most memorable from when I was living in Japan.

This is a beautiful shrine complex. Its main claim to fame is its rope knots at the front of the shrine building. There are two rope knots shrines to see. One is much bigger (5 tons) than the other ( just over 1 ton). The whole complex is surrounded by other buildings and gardens. An awesome place to visit.

A MASSIVE place, we had no time to appreciate it all to the fullest, will be back soon. Either by train or car , easy access. Even on a cold Monday quite many people were there, I reckon it's quite lively on weekends. Bring a plastic back with some soil from a place you are currently living to exchange for some BLESSED PILE in the end of the complex behind the central construction.
If you come by car, there is free parking right across from the science museum (google map) which is another place to visit once there. And surely try AMAZING YUMMY Soft 🍦 (very expensive but worthwhile), sold next to the Starbucks that is in front of the main GATE of this complex.

Izumo Shrine is renowned in Japan. What captivates visitors even more is the massive knot tied to the Shrine. Additionally, numerous rabbit statues are scattered throughout, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the journey. Moreover, the worship ritual is distinct from others—two worships, four claps, and one bow. For those who believe in mysterious powers, there's the option to purchase omamori or draw lots.

Ichibata Yakushi is a Buddhist temple with a history dating back to 894 AD, nestled amidst forested peaks. Dedicated to the god of healing, it features legends associated with figures such as an old woman and little boy that can be spotted on the premises. The famous designer Shigeru Mizuki has created many one-eyed little man statues that decorate this temple, embodying his signature creation and humor style.
There are legends associated with this temple. Perhaps this populism is more popular than Buddhism or Zen. Figures of an old woman and a little boy can be seen in various places on the premises. Shigeru Mizuki (boy) is a well-known designer who portrays creation and humor. Also, the main character in his animation is the one-eyed little man statue and many such statues can be seen in this temple. The Japanese believe that creation or animation is an intermediate state between "soul" and "ghost". The founder of Shigeru Mizuki, the old lady is said to have told him many historical and mythical stories.

(Translated by Google) I went there for the first time because I was talking to an eye doctor.
Even though it was a holiday, there weren't many people, so I was able to relax and look around.
There is a large parking lot, so you can park close to the site and proceed through a shopping street with several shops.
Two or three of them had cute signboard dogs.
Steamed buns seem to be the specialty, so why not try them at every restaurant? was called out to me.
Climb the stairs from that path.
Once you reach the top, you will reach a site with a main road.
The grounds are kept clean and the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing.
There are 84,000 Buddha Roads on both sides of the main road, and the view of the small Buddha statues lined up is breathtaking.
In addition, there is also the 16 Arhat Hall, which is worth seeing.
What caught my attention personally was Ichibatayama Cottage, which I saw on the way home. There seemed to be a lodging inn, so I thought I'd like to stay there, so I left this place that day.

Due to construction, it was not possible to follow the normal route.
There was a detour sign, but it was a long detour.
Naturally, I thought there would be few worshipers, but until I arrived.
I was surprised when I arrived at the parking lot! ️
There are many cars from outside the prefecture.
Also, today's young people come to worship.
I was surprised twice
There are so many young worshipers at this time of year❓❓
I thought about it in my own way
Perhaps that young man's parents also visited the shrine.
Also, their parents must have visited the shrine before.
I pray to something in my precious eyes, and I'm sure it will get better.
Such stories are passed down from parents to children and grandchildren.
I was told this and it resonates in the hearts of today's young people.
Prayers from generation to generation...
I realized that this is the heart of the Japanese people.
