Imabari is a city situated on the Shikoku island of Japan. The Imabari Castle, dating back to the 17th century, is surrounded by a broad moat. The area is connected to nearby islands through the suspension bridges of the Shimanami-Kaido route. On Ōshima Island, visitors can take in breathtaking panoramic views from Kirosan Observatory.

Best stops along Kurashiki to Matsuyama drive
The top stops along the way from Kurashiki to Matsuyama (with short detours) are Kotohiragu, Senkoji Park, and Ōkunoshima. Other popular stops include Imabari-jō Castle, Ishiteji Temple, and Bitchu Matsuyama Castle.
Traversing through wooded paths to reach the Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is an experience worth cherishing. The medieval castle boasts a tower, earthen walls, and exceptional views of the valley and city. The climb to the castle is moderately steep with numerous steps but not overly exhausting. Additionally, exploring around the castle can extend your trip into a half day or more adventure of marveling at nature's beauty.
This is one of the so called “12 genzon-tenshukaku”, roughly translated as “original castle keep”. These 12 castle keeps were built before or during the Edo period, and are not modern reconstructions like the Osaka or Nagoya castles.
This castle is famous for the castle keep but the current resident of the castle, Sanjurō, is probably more famous than the castle itself (see photos!).
The displays inside are all in Japanese and if you’re a foreigner, you may struggle to understand the castle’s history and construction.
I walked from Bicchu Takahashi station, and it took about half an hour to walk to the start of the climb to the castle. Yes, you read that right, it is a proper “climb” up a gradual but continuous uphill slope. You will need to have decent footwear if you want to walk to the castle from the bottom. It took me about twenty minutes to walk the mile or so but then I am reasonably fit. If you are not fit or have health issues, just take the cab from the station.
One thing I was not told when purchasing the entrance ticket for the castle (¥500) was that there is a combination ticket for the castle, the buke-yashiki (2 of them) and Raikyu-Ji temple for ¥1,000, which saves you ¥400 compared to buying all three entrance tickets separately.

The path to the castle is tiring but it was definitely worth it! It is very beautiful and I love the cat who welcomed us.

The hike up from the town is almost a highlight as much as the castle on the top of the hill…only attempt the hike up to the Castle if you are have a certain fitness level if not just get a taxi ride up to the nearest rest point from the castle which is a 15mins hike up to the top
Daniel Ng — Google review
This is Japan's oldest surviving castle, which makes it a special place. However only part of the original castle still exists and the keep is really small (two floors, less than 100m² of land area, so smaller than most Japanese houses). Note that buses and taxis stop at a car park located about 20 minutes walk from the castle itself, and the climb is moderately strenuous.
J. B. — Google review
Bitchu Matsuyama castle, famously known as the castle in the clouds, is also one of the 12 original castles in Japan, sits at more than 400m on the mountain top, making it the tallest castle in Japan. But because of this, getting to the castle is no easy feat.
Unless you wish to take almost 2 hours journey on foot from the train station, the easiest would be booking a shared taxi at the tourist information centre (located at Bitchu Takahashi Station) which will take you to one of the upper parking lots in the mountain, after which it’ll be a 20 min hike to the castle grounds.
The other method would be to take a bus from Bitchu Takahashi Station to the castle trail where it’ll be another hour’s hike to the top.
The castle itself isn’t very impressionable, being very modest in size, in fact probably the smallest castle in Japan (or at least we have seen so far), and isn’t as ornate or grand as the others.
However, at that height it does offer a panoramic view of the mountain range and the city below, but then again there are many other sights which also offer spectacular views, if not better.
The autumn foliage is also not as spectacular as other attractions we’ve seen and unfortunately even the charms of the current lord of the castle, Sanjuro the cat, wouldn’t be enough to win our hearts.
Shingo — Google review
After watching it disappear and reappear in the mist from the observatory on the other side of the valley, we had to go to see the castle! Instead of taking the shuttle from the parking lot, we walked. It’s an easy (uphill) walk on the road of about 20 minutes to the trail head. The trail is about 700m long, and is quite steep - with lots of stairs. Some of the mist still remained when we arrived (around 9am) and it’s certainly a beautifully restored little castle to explore, with great views of the surrounding area.
Rory Rosszell — Google review
A castle with a nice view overlooking the valley, especially stunning under a cloudless sky, or perhaps a mystic scenery in rainy days. The castle itself is not as amusing as the view, with some explanations of its history and you may take a walk around the castle.

The cat is very lovely. The scene along the way to the castle from the bus station is also amazing. The way to the mountain is a little bit tiring. Please try to go there for an experience!

Definitely worth the trip. The castle is modest in a good way and the walk offers amazing views. We walked and it took around 1.5 hours each way from the train station. The climb is a bit steep but isn't too bad. Although quite a few steps. We also walked around to the lookout on the other side of the mountain and even saw some monkeys. The path through the forest was nice and crosses a suspension bridge. If you have the time you can make a half day or more out of it by exploring. Overall we were there for about 4-5 hours and enjoyed it.
Byron — Google review
Steep but not terribly challenging climb, wear good shoes. The parking lot is at the base, you can buy a shuttle bus ticket for ¥500, but after getting off the bus there still is a bit of a hike. Thick socks are also recommended as the wood is quite old, you may get splinters
After visiting Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, we decided to take a midway break and go to Railkyujicho by tourist bus. Here, we had to purchase entrance tickets, but it was definitely worth it.
Inside, we found a serene and tranquil temple. We enjoyed the garden views from within the temple and took a moment for a short meditation session. It was very recharging.
Anky Lee — Google review
This tucked away temple is serene, well maintained and has an exceptionally beautiful garden. This place is well worth a visit on the way to or from the castle, and even worth the effort of a visit for its own sake.

Kojima Jeans Street, also known as Denim Street, is a renowned destination for denim enthusiasts and fashion lovers. Located in Kojima, a hub for denim manufacturing, this area features an array of stores offering designer jeans brands alongside Japanese-style shops and modern boutiques. Visitors can explore unique stores showcasing a variety of denim products such as coveralls, shirts, and jackets.

I visited at the end of hot September.
Since it was a weekday, there weren't many tourists, so I was able to explore the area at a leisurely pace.
As expected, since it is an authentic place, the price per item is high.
I feel disappointed that I can't invest in clothes anymore because I'm dyed at such ridiculous prices.
To begin with, jeans only make me feel guilty when I have a short body and are middle-aged and overweight, so even though I wanted a G-jean, I had given up on it.
I am grateful that the staff at the store were very well-educated in their customer service, and I never felt uncomfortable wherever I went.
The townscape has strong remnants of the Showa era, and personally, it is a rare town that makes me want to visit again.
Masks were sold in vending machines, probably because of the times.
There were several pairs of jeans hanging on clothes lines from the rooftops on both sides of the street, and I enjoyed the atmosphere as well.
The blue lemonade was refreshing and I was impressed that there was no other drink that was as perfect for quenching a dry throat, including its color and flavor.
It's not one of the many local tourist spots that gets praised, but I highly recommend it.
If you are rich, please buy a lot and give it away.

Extremely low key and calm spot but amazing nonetheless. We walked around in all the jeans spots for a couple hours and weren’t bored for a second. The history of all the stores is amazing and the quality of the jeans are incomparable. Beware that the price of the jeans are above average (depending on where you live) the cheapest pair we found was about 18,000 yen and the most expensive was 60,000 yen but if you want you can spend a lot more on a pair if you order and want them fitted.

Denim Street is located in Kojima, a world-class denim manufacturing center.
There are many denim manufacturers opening stores, and each store is unique and attractive.
In addition to jeans, there are many carefully selected items such as coveralls, denim shirts, and denim jackets.
I think it's a good idea to have jeans on display, as well as jeans that have faded after being worn out.
I think you can find the buddy jeans that are perfect for you.
I personally like RESOLUTE denim.
I would like inbound foreigners to know the wonders of Made in Japan.
浅辺雅史 — Google review
Five stars if you are a lover of denim but otherwise Kojima itself is not an attractive town and there is little else to see. Jeans Street is in fact spread over two streets, a map is available at the station, and has around thirty shops selling denim. Most are small boutiques and, in terms of style, some sell a broad range including Big John; some are aimed at a more older and conservative demographic, and a few are fashion-forward such as Japan Blue Jean, and Momotaro.
None are street wise, and ultra-hip, and there are no stores selling pre-worn clothing.
Nor is this a place for cheap prices. It's not an outlet street.
GMT — Google review
Don’t expect a bargain from the stores of Kojima Jeans Street as they are premium products (mostly) made in Japan. Ones have to be denim (and/or) aficionados to enjoy and appreciate this place.

I've been interested in this spot for a while because it's a great photo spot.
It suddenly turned cold, so there were very few tourists.
It is also a sacred place for domestically produced jeans, and as expected, they only have high-quality jeans.
There were a lot of cute aprons, bags, and clothes made with jeans.
I think it's the best place for people who really like it!
There is no parking lot as it is located in a shopping district.
If you go by car, please park at the former Nozaki residence's partial parking lot or the municipal parking lot and take a walk.
美里片桐 — Google review
Many denim heads dream of visiting Kojima Jeans Street (which is actually two or three streets) however the experience may be disappointing. The price tag is high in most shops (don’t expect bargains here), many shops were closed when I went there, and just a few places to eat. They did a good effort trying to give it a character, with those jeans pants hanging, or denim-themed toilets, but still lacks the wow factor. Visiting all the shops in one day is an overwhelming task so here are the best shops IMO: Momotaro, Japan Blue, Graphzero, Big John and Kojima Genes. In these shops, you will find top quality denim. Others that are worth checking out: Bluxe (an outlet with great prices), and Kamikaze Attack.
Fernando Hatsumura — Google review
Love, love, love Jeans Street! Almost went to some denim street somewhere else tho! I only did a third of the shops but I am hoping to come back for more. Also I ate at Ikemoto which was delicious but also the service was very warm and friendly (and your chopsticks come in a little Jean printed sleeve).
jFND 23 — Google review
Love the stuff they sell here. Hate to be here as well because you might be spending a lot! It’s worth the trip if you are a big denim fan. However, most of these brands are also found in big cities like Okayama, Kobe and Osaka. You need not do a detour to get here.
Koo Haoming (Haominggowhere) — Google review
If you're looking to buy or have a pair of jeans made, this is the place for you. If not and you have no other reason for visiting Kojima, then I wouldn't make the trip. That said, it is a nice area to stroll around with lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from and it's only a 15 minute walk from the train station. If you're driving, then park for free in the Happy Town mall and walk five minutes. Kojima can be a short stop en route from Kurashiki to Washuzan.
Judy OBrien — Google review
For jeans lovers definitely worth a trip. Apart from the jeans shops, nothing much to see in Kojima.
Don't go there on a Monday, a lot of stores are closed, best time to go is the weekend, so I heard.
Staff is very friendly in all the shops, most of them don't speak much English though.
Not in all but in most shops, they will give you a tax free.

It’s definitely one of the smaller castles in Japan, but it has very high historical value as 1 of only 12 Japanese castles that have been preserved largely as they had been built.
There’s a bit of a hike up to get to the main building of thr castle, but it’s definitely worth it to get a view of the sea and city from up high, esp. right before sunset.

Entrance fee is 200 yen for adult, and 100 yen for children. I still feel 200 yen is too much though. The castle is a walking hazard with the termite-ridden wood falling apart, and there is nothing noteworthy inside except for the tile with a fan sculpture. The exterior still looks okay so if you want to visit you don't need to pay inside and get disappointed.

This is the smallest wooden castle in Japan. Indeed, it’s very small!! You can go in with 200yen. The view is great.

Nice castle, nice views, nice gift shop. A bit of a hike but it's all sloped so it's not too bad. Castle keep closes at 4pm but I think you can enter the grounds any time.

Sakura at Marugame Castle in Kagawa Prefecture-Japan.
Different views of Marugame Castle during the Cherry Blossoms matsuri in Kagawa Prefecture-Japan.
Featuring: A cherry blossom view of Mount Iino (飯野山) is seen from Marugame Castle. This mountain is also called Sanuki Fuji because it resembles Mount Fuji. And it is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, standing at 422 meters above sea level. Sanuki is an ancient name of Kagawa, so Sanuki Fuji means a mountain like Mount Fuji in Sanuki. I really enjoyed this sakura spot. The climb to the top is a bit steep but rewarding in the end. There is a nice atmosphere here, very enjoyable.

Konpira Kabuki is an ancient theatrical establishment in Japan, which was previously utilized as a cinema. Although it now only showcases occasional performances, visitors can explore the venue daily. The renovations are exceptional and include backstage areas where one can observe the turning stage mechanism alongside underground trapdoors that lead to a tunnel extending outwards from the front of the theater.
We were fortunate to get tickets to the spring Kabuki performance (April 2024). What a treat! The male performers, the musicians, singers, stage hands that manually moved the props, all were stunning. If you don't understand Japanese (like us), read up on the play beforehand so you can at least follow the plotline. The dance number at the end featured a high-flying act that was extra special. This was a once-in-a-lifetime event - highly recommended!

Really lovely and historical building. We were given a guided tour on English. So nice of them! I hope to watch a kabuki performance there one day.

This is the oldest Japanese kabuki theater in Japan, built in 1835!
The ticket costs 500 jpy per person, but once inside you can walk around freely and see the different rooms at the back, too, not only the stage and audience seats. Don't forget to take a look at all the mechanisms below the ground, eg the mawari butai revolving stage! If you can speak Japanese I highly recommend asking the local guide (free of charge) to explain some of the features. We were lucky enough that the guide was there today and he kindly took around 30 minutes to show us around and tell us some interesting stories related to the place.

Very good historical building with wooden structure. Only one japanese performance every April. Good guided tour by the volunteer~theatre security. Clear explanation and you are welcome to walk through the auditorium, stage area, under stage area and dressing room.

Definitely a must see. This is the oldest Kabuki theater in Japan, and it's still in use! It's also the only one with a special trap door next to the stage. Entrance is only 500 yen, and we got a guided tour and explanation from a very nice old man who was able to explain most stuff in simple English. You get to go around the entire theater, check out the dressing rooms, go under the stage to see how it rotates...absolutely a worthwhile visit.

The Konpira-san Shinto shrine is dedicated to the guardian of sailors and ship transport. It became exclusively a shinto shrine after the Meiji Restoration. The trek up the 1368 steps is strenuous, but worth it for those who want to visit this beautiful Shinto shrine.
According to its website, there are 785 steps to the main building and plus 1368 steps to the building locates at the end.
The first building you will see is 大門(おおもん). It literally means “a big gate.” Right after you go through the gate, you will find 5 stalls. There, you can buy candy shaped like a fan. We didn’t buy them though. Haha. When I visited there, I didn’t know but it is kinda long tradition at Kotohira. Only 5 certain stores have a permission to run business in the premise of the shrine.
The path you found right after the big gate is called “桜の馬場.(さくらのばば)” ”馬場“ is a place where you practice horse riding, so it means a horse-riding practice area with cherry blossoms. Unfortunately, cherry blossom season had already passed when we visited there. That’s why we missed the beautiful scenery. Hopefully, next time. Hahaha. After 桜の馬場, you will arrive at a Torii gate called 西詰銅鳥居(にしづめどうとりい). Near the gate, there is a place where they keep white horses which are donated as gifts to the god. Luckily, we could see a horse walking.
Near the horse stable, there is a big statue of a ship proppelr. It is because this shrine is known for the safety of sailors and fishermen. Right after going through the gate and up the stairs, you will spot 表書院. There, you can see some wall Japanese paintings, but they charge entrance fee. Since our time was limited, we passed it. Haha.
The main temple is called 御本宮(ごほんぐう). Since many people regard this building as a goal (I think), here was the most crowded. There was also an observation deck where you could command a nice view below the mountain.
The biggest building is called 旭社(あさひしゃ). Its heigt is 18 meters tall. If you go further, you can visit 白峰神社(しらみねじんじゃ) and 厳魂神社(いつたまじんじゃ). 厳魂神社 locates at the end of the route. You can see the stone masks of 烏天狗(からすてんぐ) and 天狗(てんぐ)hanging on the nearby cliff. 烏天狗 and 天狗 are Japanese legendary creatures. To get to this shrine was really tiring, but the sense of achievement was great.Even though it took a long time to go up the all stairs, going down was really smooth.

I visited this beautiful place along with four of my friends on 20 February 2024. The number of steps required to reach the highest point is 3801 counted by Google and the number of stairs you need is 1401 counted by me. Anyone who thinks you are fit for this journey may go there to enjoy the scenic beauty of hills, shrines and the constructions made by the Japanese people. It's really amazing....
Mohammed Rashel Uddin — Google review
The day we decided to climb the hundreds of steps to this shrine just happened to be one of the hottest and sunniest days of the summer. But it was still worth it considering the beautiful scenery along the way. We loved the main shrine most of all. It's is gorgeous and surprisingly wide. Those who make the climb should grab bottles of water in the lower area where the shops are located; it becomes difficult to find anything to drink once you are in the more natural setting. Also, there is a spot in the middle where birds will land on your hand if you stick your arm out with your palm facing upward. They are looking for food, so take some sunflower seeds with you! And many folks bring a cane or walking stick to help with the climb up the stairs. Our nearby hotel loaned canes to us, but they can also be found for sale in some of the shops at the base of the hill. Overall, expect a tiring but fulfilling experience.
Armando Landin — Google review
Nice spot to spend 2-3 hours. The steps are much less scary than people make it sound. You'll be breathing a bit, but it's not all that hard. Definitely try out some ramen and grab some souvenirs at the shops lined up at the entrance. The temple itself is nice, but more importantly it's got a great view!
Nicholas Pun — Google review
This shrine is a good place to go hiking and shopping. There is a lot of beautiful nature. Also, near the top you can get a great view of the city. I recommend getting drunk before hiking. Being drunk is fun. Hiking while drunk is even more fun. The only issue is that you may have some difficulty recalling the hike if you’re too drunk. That’s okay. Your photos will remind you.
ZDR — Google review
There are about 700 steps of stairs to arrive the main temple of Kotohiragu. If you have more energy to challenge, you can keep going up to about 1500 steps of stairs to arrive the highest temple.
Ryanne Cheng — Google review
The temple site is huge with thousand of steps. I couldn’t imagine I completed more than 2/3 of the steps without having any pain of my legs after the walking. The overall experience was good and you can see the panoramic view from the main temple. A very nice walk even without a cane.

It says that all Japanese must visit here once in a lifetime. In the ancient time, travel wasn't that easy and hence those visiting here will help the others bring along a plush it equivalent to signify they were here. It require more than 1300 steps to reach the top. The last 100 steps were really high and tall steps.

Another sacred place in Shikoku area. That was super long way to go up with a lot of stairs, but worth it to spend time and energy there.
Highly recommended to go!

A must-visit destination indeed! Although it requires climbing over 600 stairs to reach the shrine, the spiritual ambiance of the building and the breathtaking view from the mountaintop make the ascent truly worthwhile.

Nice hike! A great chance to pray and bring good fortune to your life! A bit steep if your out of shape but overall it’s a little over and hour from the cafe. You can park at the cafe to save time if you eat there but it’s not very good but worth saving the time and energy. I had a sanuki beer which was good but don’t get the burger.

The toll road rest stop called Roadside station Kasaoka bayfarm is renowned for its seasonal floral blooms and offers a variety of fresh farm produces, seafood and poultry. It is not a typical supermarket as it has a smaller size but it provides an exceptional atmosphere. Customers can enjoy the heavenly taste of fantastic peaches and Muscat grapes at lower prices compared to other supermarkets. Despite being located in an area that's not crowded, this beautiful place is worth revisiting.
3rd Stop: Roadside Station Kasaoka Bayfarm, as always market visits are an obligation in every country, my 2nd in Japan, smaller then the first one, but still worth every second! Unfortunately no kitchen at our destination, would have been amazing to grab some of the delightful produce! Interesting point though, only saw Japanese Clientele, so as a Gaijin, I stood out! Loved it!

Poppies are already in season. There are photo spots, food carts, “koi nobori” ‘coz this was during Golden Week, souvenir shop, restaurant and a small market nearby. Flavored soft creams are popular so it’s a must-try!
Also, parking space is huge so don’t worry unless the flower season draws a lot of crowds. Other flowers to enjoy here are canola flowers, cosmos and sunflowers.

A very surprising place where you get super fresh farm produces and also seafood and poultry. The store is not exactly big, just about smaller then a basketball court but really like the atmosphere as this is not your normal supermarket. During my visit they were selling fantastic peaches and Muscat grapes at below usual supermarkets price and the smell and taste of those fruits is heavenly. I will certainly visit it again if I'm in this area.

Huge sand sculpture of an Edo period coin, viewable from a hilltop observatory in Kotohiki Park.
This place is a hidden gem… I went there around sunset time expecting the view would be more spectacular. The view was majestic, meeting my expectation… In order to see the coin shape, u need to go up to an observatory place nearby. The road on the way to there has lots of curves, and it’s narrow a bit, so drive safely :-)

I've seen it in Zenigata Heiji, but I never thought I'd go there.
The road to the observatory is narrow, but it's a one-way street, so you don't have to worry about oncoming traffic, but be careful not to let your tires fall on the shoulder.
First of all, you can see the second parking lot (3-4 cars), then you can see the rocky area and the observatory.
Next to the building that looks like a toilet, there is the first parking lot (about 10 cars).
It seemed that it was a vacant time, and only a few cars were parked.
A short walk to the observatory.
Perhaps because it was near noon, there was no shadow and the outline was not clear.
It may be better to go at a time when shadows are formed.
It was also a good photo spot from the rocky area next to the observatory.
When I went to the parking lot to take a picture and go home, there were several cars waiting for parking.
Since the stay time is short, I think that the replacement will be early.
However, the road is narrow, so it was difficult to wait and get out of the parking lot.
A car with a low vehicle height may rub the front when exiting the parking lot.
The way back is also a one-way street, so you don't have to worry about oncoming traffic, but there is one sharp curve, and large vehicles need to turn around.
Will you get lucky? There are rumors about it, so I'm looking forward to the future.

There is an observatory to check, so you can go up on foot or by car.
However, please be careful as it is a one-way street for cars and motorcycles.
At the observatory, there are 2 parking spaces for disabled people and 2 regular cars, for a total of 4 cars.
It seems that the gravel at the root of the tree can also be parked.

It is a very large coin-shaped monument molded directly out of the white sand of Ariake Beach. From the car park area of the Ariake Beach, you can walk to the reach the viewing point. For us, it was a 10 mins walk and be prepared to climb staircases. When you meet an open space with tarred-road, there’s a ‘forest route’ on the left, follow this way and continue walking for about 3 mins to reach at the viewing point. It is said that for viewers who lay eyes on the massive coin-shaped sand monument, they will be blessed with longevity and healthy life and prosperity. It is learned that the sand art is curated and surrounded by the pine trees which could be used as a barrier for resistant to wind and rain, and the maintenance of the sand-art is performed two times in a year.

Nothing that special, but it has a significant value for the local people and history. Apparently, the sand is also refurbished every so often to maintain the way it looks.
The real shape of the sand sculpture is intentional made slightly disfigured so that when people see it at an angle from the lookout point, they still see a perfect circle.

The Fukuyama Castle Museum is a splendid site comprising an ancient castle, which now serves as a museum exhibiting both art and historical collections. Moreover, it offers truly breathtaking views from the top. During autumn, specifically between October and November, visitors can marvel at the stunning chrysanthemum flower exhibition alongside other floral displays. It's just unfortunate that there is a policy of not taking photos while in the museum.
This is a historical place, it is hoped that if people go there they will understand the history of Fukuyama. In my opinion, it would be better if visitors were allowed to take documentation in the form of photos as stories and as recommendations later.
And it would be better if all the information on the display items were added in English, this would really help visitors who cannot speak Japanese.

Tomonoura is a well-known fishing village located near Fukuyama, which can be reached in approximately 30 minutes by bus. The village boasts preserved traditional Japanese houses, shops and temples that have been standing for centuries. A ticket for the bus costs 550 yen one way to visit this quiet place, but it's worth the cost as there are plenty of sightspots such as Nunakuma temple, Old lighthouse or Louji temple that can be enjoyed throughout an entire day.
What you should know before try to visit Tonamura:
- It's a famous fishing village close to Fukuyama (about 30 mins).
- Ticket bus is 550¥ (one way).
- It's a quite place, and pleanty of sightspots to enjoyed a whole day as: Nunakuma temple, Old lighthouse or Louji temple.
- It's a little expensive, but it's possible find some places with good prices. Bring some snacks.
- There is a turist boat to give a look around the small islands beside the port.
- Even if you spend the entire day here, you will feel that you missing visit a lot of places.
- At 5pm close almost everything, and it becomes a ghost village.
I highly recommend visit this place.

The village has no real sightseeing attraction in the typical sense other than maybe the ancient Diplomatic residence. Its attraction lies in its simplicity and the feeling that it is just a normal village, no pretence, no formalities, and no hype, well other than the big bulletin board in the welcome center showing the movies with scenes shot there. But even that seemed small-town. I am glad I went there.

Quiet, clean and beautiful town. Similar to Ise bay in that houses 🏠 are lined up along the bay, doing various small businesses like cafes, souvenirs, crafts and museum exhibits. Walk or drive along the small roads from the tourist centre to the stone lighthouse to find resemblances to the Ponyo movie 🎥.

A nice 30 minute hike from the main town. The cable car isn't worth it maybe because it's so short. Super relaxing and quiet place for a morning walk.

The design of the observation deck was quite a sight. The view is picturesque during sunset. A couple of ice cream store nearby; one near the observation deck and the other near the museum. The park is spacious and you could spend many hours here. The ropeway takes up 3-4 mins at most. Walking takes 25-40mins depending on the pace and entry points.

A wonderful little park that is on the top of the hill with a gorgeous view, and when you walk down the hill, you get to see a number of wonderful temples, museums, and really cute cafés.
There’s a walk that is famous for its cats, and also a walk that is famous for its poetry. This place in general has a lot to offer, and I would highly recommend that you only get the rope way up, and then walk down.

However, this museum, named after the artist, not only exhibits impressive masterpieces, but I felt that the building was designed to take in the artist's beloved moon as a borrowed scenery. In what appears to be a courtyard, there is a clear pond the size of a tennis court, and on a clear moonlit night you can see the moon shining on the surface of the water, and on a windy night you can see the reflection of the moon breaking in the rays of the water, creating a very picturesque atmosphere. There is also an exhibition of valuable machinery and equipment and copper ore, which is a very elaborate exhibition. The reason why this kind of thing is released for free is probably because of the strong desire of the Sumitomo Group for the Besshi Copper Mine.

The origin of Sumitomo Group…
Gerd Vanbeginne — Google review
(Translated by Google) There is an exhibition about the Besshi Copper Mine, which was the basis of the Sumitomo Zaibatsu for free admission.
Copper was mined for 280 years until it opened in 1691, the following year in 1690 (Genroku 3), and closed in 1973 (Showa 48). It seems that it was done. Unlike coal mines, it was not a matter of demand or cost, but because it was dug for 280 years, it was forced to close the mine because the tunnel could not withstand geothermal heat and earth pressure and safety could not be maintained.
Minetopia Beshiko is a major tourist destination, but there is an exhibition that is easy for children to understand, where you can experience the site of the tunnel, but this is an exhibition for adults similar to the museum. I think it is for junior high school students and above.
The exhibits are divided into blocks such as those related to the Sumitomo Group, those related to the Besshi Copper Mine, those related to the ore itself, and the relationship between the Besshi Copper Mine and the region. No photography is allowed inside the building. I think it takes about an hour to see all over. I am very grateful to be able to see such an exhibition for free. Locomotives and freight cars that were active in shrines and mines are displayed outside the building.
The parking lot is about 10 cars and has no capacity, so it may be crowded on holidays. By the way, it is a tough distance to walk back and forth because it is about 3km away from Minetopia Beshiko.

The inside of the museum is well-equipped for easy viewing, and the exhibition booths are just the right size. I think it will take about 10 minutes if you just take a quick look, and about 30 minutes if you take a thorough look at the exhibits, including video materials. Exhibits and panels explained the history of copper mine mining methods from the Edo period to modern times, making it an educational experience.
There is a model of the ant nest-like tunnel that the Sumitomo Group spent 283 years digging, starting from an altitude of about 1,000 meters and finally reaching 1,000 meters below sea level, and I think it's amazing. At the same time, the exhibition served as a reminder of its history and hardships.

The history of the Besshi Copper Mine begins in 1690, when an outcrop was discovered on the south side of an unexplored copper mine peak, and excavation began the following year by Sumitomo.
This museum exhibits many valuable materials related to Sumitomo and the Besshi Copper Mine since its opening, as well as minerals, life, customs, technology, and Shisaka Island, which overcame smoke pollution.
There was a poem about smoke pollution. Later, I studied at Minetopia Besshi and understood the meaning of this magazine. It's a great business idea to react the sulfur dioxide gas produced by copper smelting and turn it into fertilizer.

This toll road rest stop marks the pinnacle of cycling courses within Japan, spanning 70 kilometers and offering opportunities to interact with dolphins and savor delectable cuisine along the way.
Great place to stop.. It falls somewhat to the middle of the Shimanami Kaido cycling trail. The shrimp burger was tasty..
Don't forget to buy some oranges.. During winter - spring.. They have different variants.

Nice rest stop with a view! Recommend the restaurant with menu from local ingredients and seafoods.

This has always been a great lunch or break stop on the Shimanami route from Onomichi to Imabari. There is a good restaurant with local fish, a nice shop, bathrooms, and facilities for cyclists/cycles. Try the マハタ (mahata or grouper), it is delicious.
Update:
I visited on a holiday and they were fairly busy. When my order had not arrived after 35 minutes, I had to leave to make the Setoda ferry. Since you now pay in advance, there was no way to cancel my order, so I lost my money and am removing one star. The food is usually pretty good.

Great photo spot. There's also some shop that sells sweet strawberries and oranges.
A good, famous cyclist stop called Cyclist' Sanctuary.

Pleasant terrace with grassy area and outdoor table seating with lovely views of the sea, Ikuchijima Island and the 1480m Tatara Bridge.
Farmers market with a great selection of local citrus fruits, veggies and other produce.
One of the Shimanami rental bike terminals is located here and a lot of cyclists make sure to get a souvenir photo of themselves with the stone monument to the "Cyclists' Sanctuary" and the amusing bike stands in human form.
No vegetarian options - although the restaurant should be able to accommodate with some advance notice (a few days).
If you are after coffee, opt for the nearby Shimanami Coffee truck that overlooks rest area.

I would definitely ride my bike again on this 70km course, play with the dolphins, enjoy the delicious food that you can try along the way and the list continues.

Half way between Onomichi and Imabari, perfect place to stop for a meal or refreshment on the Shimanami Kaido cycle trail. Great views of the inland sea and Tatara Bridge and good pic opportunities. Be sure to have some cash.

The final stop, half way through the 7 bridge highway, on the way from
Kotahara to Hiroshima, a great scenic spot!
Have lunch here, enjoy the view and get closest to the water front!
It’s a great break when driving a 300km scenic route, pretty much a whole day affair if one takes the time to admire the scenery along the way!
So yes, highly recommended to do a stopover, and from here it’s pretty much 125km to Hiroshima!
Enjoy as much as we did on this perfect drivers day!

A tough ride if, like me, you haven't cycled in about 12 years, but infinitely worth it. Justmake sure you bring extra padding for the bike seat designed by the devil himself.

The Ōkunoshima island is a great family-friendly destination where visitors can enjoy viewing and feeding wild rabbits, as well as explore its museum, camping grounds, and historical ruins. The island offers an exciting time for kids who will surely love seeing the adorable rabbits roaming around everywhere. However, it's important to be cautious while walking through the woods due to the presence of spiders.
I went in November and March.
In November, there were few visitors so dozens of rabbits were literally chasing us and climbing on us for food.
In March, there were many people so the rabbits were full even early in the morning and didn’t want to eat as much as people just dump big piles of food everywhere.
If you are going, please consider bringing food they can actually eat everyday, it’s not good for their health to eat carrot so much and unfortunately, it’s what people bring most of the time.
I found that they like bok choy and celery way better than other vegetables (especially the leaves). Many times, the rabbits refused to eat other people’s carrots/cabbages (I guess they were almost full) but were still going after our food.
Aur?lie — Google review
Spent the whole day on the island and it was absolutely worth it! Few tourists, very quiet and lots of rabbits!
ATTENTION:
1. buy food in the harbour (tadanoumi Port) there is none to buy on the island .
2. take 2-3 litres of water with you to fill up the water bowls for the rabbits.
3. you can have lunch at the Hotel on the island, otherwise there is only a vending machine at the pier

A lovely place, but didn’t feel the train and ferry fare + inconvenience of getting out there was worth it just to feed the bunnies and take some cute pictures. We came in the afternoon and they were nearly full already, but there were still a few friendly bunnies left.
I could hardly relax because I was worried about catching my bus back to Hiroshima. I literally ran back to catch the ferry and then it was late.
The bunny food was quite cheap in the shop (maybe ¥200) and you can exchange the empty bag for a postcard so I really liked that.
Christie Vong — Google review
The bunnies are very cute and interactive! They come up to great you (for food) everywhere you go! The WW2 remnants are cool to see

Was a fun time kids loved it. There are rabbits everywhere. Carefully walking through woods to see rabbits since there are spiders everywhere. Was a good time for family. I would advise bringing your own carrots since the rabbits can eat alot. Also be careful and don't get to excited when trying to feed them they will just run away and get scared.

A fascinating island oasis, full of rabbits. The rabbits are the big attraction for coming here for most, but it’s also very interesting in its own right. You can get to the island via a great ferry service running between Sakari on the island of Omishima and Tadanoumi on the mainland. It cost us 5200 Yen for three people and a car to make the whole journey, stopping off at Rabbit Island in the middle. The history of the island is all very well documented, so I won’t bore you, but if you have time it is well worth walking at least as far as the power plant that used to power the chemical weapons factory. It’s to the North of the harbour and just inland of the old quay that preceded the modern harbour. There is a small beach beside the quay, but it’s hard to get down to it to swim, and we did see a lot of jellyfish around the harbour in Sakari, so maybe not good idea swim at that spot. The rabbits themselves range from very friendly to quite standoffish. They looked healthy in the main. You can buy rabbit food at the ferry terminal at Sakari and presumably at Tadanoumi as well. We paid 150 Yen per packet. There were also people on the island with cabbage leaves, which the rabbits seemed to prefer. All in all, it is a fascinating island to visit, and we wish we had been there longer. Fun fact: the real name of the island is Okunoshima, which literally means, In The Back Island. (Forgive me if I have got that Japanese translation wrong.)
Jacqui London — Google review
Nice island for walks and lots of rabbits. Rabbit food is sold at main land before boarding ferry. Some old buildings where the gas poison was made are out of bounds and cannot be seen at all. Spend 3-4hours max. On a weekday it is not crowded but do note timing of ferries and also not much food available so do pack own food.

went in early december.
im a bunny lover so this was heaven (and occasionally hell, seeing bunnies in pain.)
recommendations:
- make sure to buy or bring fresh produce for the bunnies! the shop before the ferry does sell pellets, but it's not the best for their diet.
- plan out travel beforehand. the ferries only run occasionally, so it's good to plan leaving and arriving times.
- after the short ferry, turn left for more bunnies + the museum, but also turn right for a serene, stunning view of other structures on the island.
- don't chase the bunnies please 😐 please make sure your kids dont hit them.
- don't leave food lying around! predators will find the bunnies and attack them based on leftover food.
- don't feed the bunnies near the road.
Wilson Hou — Google review
Although at the port, rabbit food is sold for 500 yen per bag, you can go to the nearest convenience store to buy food for the rabbits for much cheaper.

Really unique place not just for meeting cute rabbits but also learning about important war history. Definitely worth going out of the way for. You will feel like a Disney Princess as bunnies run out of the woods towards your footsteps!
Tori Lu — Google review
The island is marketed to visitors as "Rabbit Island." There are many rabbits. Hundreds of rabbits. People love the rabbits. Girls scream "kawaii" when the ferry arrives and the rabbits run to people looking for food. But the island has a dark history which becomes apparent soon after arriving. Okunoshima was the secret site of the Imperial Japanese Army Chemical Weapons arsenal until surrender in 1945. Chemical weapons were produced and stored on the island, which was so secret it was removed from maps. The factory workers labored in unsafe conditions and many were made sick by the chemical agents produced on the island. The rabbits are said to be the progeny of the rabbits used to test the weapons. The small museum is eye opening and you will soon wish to be back feeding rabbits again. Very convenient from Tadanoumi and Sakari by ferry. Really, its not worth a visit if time is in anyway short. Dark history, but cute rabbits.
Oyamazumi Shrine, located in Omishima Island, is a spiritual nature shrine surrounded by ancient camphor trees and bark-roofed shrines. The complex also includes a museum featuring armor and weapons from the samurai period of Japanese history. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, signing goshuincho books is currently unavailable but visitors can receive a pre-customized seal on separate paper to place in their book.
Oyamazumi Shrine, which is dedicated to the god of navigation, is a shrine you should definitely visit if you're in the area. The museum exhibits armor, swords, and other equipment that account for 80% of national treasures and important cultural properties.

The Kamotsuru Brewery is a well-known and iconic establishment that offers visitors an opportunity to explore the world of sake. The brewery provides free admission to a visiting room where one can learn about how sake is made, see exhibits, and purchase merchandise. In addition, guests can taste various types of sake at the free tasting table. This Sake distillery also boasts being the largest in size and organization with a video presentation on sake making for those who are interested in learning more about this process.
Free admission, inside there is a showroom explaining how sake is made, a spring, which is used for brewing sake, for your water bottle, a free tasting table and merchandising selling section.
I thought all sake tastes the same (sorry my Japanese friends), until I tried a few back to back there. Highly recommending this place.

During my 5 weeks visit and tour to Nagano, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Osaka , Tokyo, Ginza, Shimbashi and Shinjuku, I always drank the famous Saijo sake brewed by Kamotsuru- the Daijinjo sake aka the Obama sake. I drank it during lunch with my spicy ramen, dinner with my beef or eel bento set and during Happy Hour at the 24th floor of the New Otani Hotel like the locals do in these cities. This famous Daijinjo sake are sold at most supermarkets. It has a very beautiful fragrance taste and it is smooth down your throat. You must really try it.

We have had two Sake tasting sets and one tasting of an aged plum liqueur. The sales persons placed the bottles directly behind so that we knew wich one. They do barely speak any English. They also do not offer or provide upon request any water to neutralize the taste between the different sakes. Strange for a tasting. We wanted to buy one of the aged sakes. They told us these were not for sale?! So why let people taste them? Finally, I bought the aged plum liqueur by pointing at the bottle the girl placed behind the tasting glass. At home, we found out they sold us something completely different, a fresh 2023 sake instead of the aged plum liqueur. Honestly, they should not serve foreign customers if they are not able to basic services.

Imabari Castle is a historic fortress from the Edo era that showcases its original walls and moat, while also boasting a reconstructed keep with exhibits. Although the interior has undergone modern remodeling, visitors can enjoy spectacular views from atop the castle. In addition to access to two small museums housed in turrets and an area above the north entrance with fascinating information on defense strategies and moats, there is also free admission to wander around the grounds and inner shrine.
The interior was a bit disappointing as it has been remodelled into a more modern building, but the view from the top was spectacular. The entrance fee also covers two turrents (turned into small museums) and the area above the north entrance (with very interesting information on the moats and defense strategies). Even if you choose not to pay the fee for the castle itself, you can still wander around the grounds and inner shrine for free. The castle is also lit up at night which makes for somw great photo opportunities.

While Imabari is not a particularly famous place, Imabari Castle is a very good castle. The fortifications have been reconstructed well, so you can see the exterior of the castle in its full beauty.
The main draw of Imabari Castle, however, is the observation deck. Imabari is directly on the Sea of Japan and the top of the castle offers amazing views of the surrounding area. If you're in the area, it's well worth the trip.

Well-preserved and charming castle in the centre of the town. Inside the main compound, one can go up into the keep and visit a nearby shrine.

I visited it around sunset and the atmosphere was kinda magic. The castle looks magnificent in quite uninteresting surrounding. What's worth mentioning is the moat filled with sea water (connect with a channel with Imabari port).
In the evening it was very charming place and quiet without many visitors (only couple of people praying). Maybe it's only during spring time, because the whole city looks a little bit deserted in the evening.

This is a beautiful castle set within a moat that’s fed from the harbour and rises and falls with the tide. It costs 520 Yen to get in for adults. Children are free. The castle itself is fantastic, with a stunning view from the top (be prepared to walk up a lot of stairs!). Adjoining the castle is a fantastic natural history museum. It shows the local geology, along with fish, birds, plants and animals found in the area. Watch out for some impressively long seaweed and a giant clam that is truly a giant. This unique museum is located in a large building that is mostly filled with towel-related merchandise. The display area, while not small, almost feels secondary to the retail floors. In any case, the exhibits were well done, including a really nice Winnie the Pooh section. A nice surprise was a lovely terrace garden that includes a Cafe with a garden view and a shop with many succulents and planters for sale. Among the retail offerings within the museum building, it was impossible to find proper museum merchandise. We hoped to find a magnet or pin representing the museum but found none.

The scale of this museum is really huge and there’s a pretty garden outside of the museum.
You get an admission ticket with a small piece of towel. This Imabari towel is well known for high-priced, high quality of towel in Japan. I was really surprised to see all those towel art works. So lovely and so amazing piece of art works are definitely attractive enough to every viewers. There are many collaboration products done with cartoon characters as well. It makes you open your wallet. You might end up spending a lot of money to buy cute and beautiful stuffs in the shop after walking around the magnificent exhibition.

You start your visit in the factory and then can see a lot of towel based creations in the museum. The towels are not a Big deal but they created a lot of things with Moomins, Hello Kitty and Walt Disney figures. Those are nice and funny and save the otherwise not so interesting place. You can of course buy a lot of stuff, including high quality towels.

Mount Ishizuchi is a rocky mountain peak that can be reached by climbing stairs and rope chains. It boasts a shrine at the top and offers expansive views of the surrounding area, particularly in the fall. While the climb can be dangerous at times due to chained sections, alternative routes are available for those who are not physically prepared. However, it may take some time to reach the actual peak when it's crowded as they enforce safety limits on visitors. Bringing a bag for any trash is recommended.
Great place to visit, moderate hiking difficulty, you can skip climbing parts.

Got to see plenty of shades of Ishizuchi-san in one day. Me and my friends went there in the 1st week of November expecting to see the red autumn leaves, but unfortunately we were about a week late. The mountain top was green (and brown). That was a small let down, however, the scenery was nonetheless breathtaking. I come from Nepal, the country of mountains, and was still amazed by the views.
Our journey started from Saijo-shi station at around 7am. We took the Ishizuchi bus and reached the bus stop near Ishizuchi cable car in about 40 minutes. We got to see a cool dam and reservoir on the way. There was a long line at the ticket counter of the cable car. The cable car ride was so fun. The cool air was so refreshing. The ride was short (or so it felt). From the cable car station we started our hiking journey of about 2 hrs or so to reach the Ishizuchi shrine.
I was amazed to see the number of people scaling the mountain. There were people of all ages. They had come from all different places in Shikoku. Had a great time interacting with them. I wish to see the mountain in its full glory and will definitely visit again next October.

Embarking on a thrilling journey up Mount Ishizuchi in the vivid hues of autumn was a decision I'll forever cherish. In the midst of late 2020, as the grip of the pandemic loosened, I, along with my friends, seized the opportunity to explore this magnificent peak. Having lived in Matsuyama for my studies, I couldn't resist the allure of Ishizuchi's vibrant beauty during the holidays.
Though I admit to a touch of fear that prevented me from trying the rope chains, the experience was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The landscape, adorned in myriad autumnal shades, painted a picture-perfect backdrop against the clear sky.
And here I memorized through my eyes and lenses.

Great day hike that took us about just under 6hrs return (incl lunch) from the ropeway. The weather was very windy at the top and at times slippery. The chains were fun so if you want an extra challenge you can climb via the chains instead! It was very cloudy at the top so we didn’t climb to the ridge peak. We then finished the hike with a soak in the onsen that’s at the bottom of the mountain.
valerie x — Google review
This hike is beautiful, especially so in fall, if not a little dangerous at times. Make sure you are physically prepared if you want to climb the chained sections, otherwise take the alternative routes. Unfortunately it can take a long time to get to the actual peak of the mountain when its very busy, as they limit the number of people out there for safety. Also make sure to bring a bag for any trash you might have.
Still, the stunning scenery and views make it totally worth it!

This mountain will always have a place in my traveler's heart with my recollection of summer 2023.
Traversing its difficult path that gradually ascends, especially after reaching the steel/metal staircases, is both a frustration to my feet, but a delight to my eyes.
The summit is just the start of the adventure with its extra knife-edge ridge challenge. Worth-experiencing 💙
Ryan Glenn Conda — Google review
A fairly strenuous hike with sections of sheer rock faces climbed with the aid of large chains (can be bypassed via stairs) and a final short, exposed ridge scramble to the true summit, should you choose to climb it. One of Japan’s seven most sacred mountains. The final summit peak (Tengu-dake) is impressive when viewed from the summit shrine. See photo of English tourist brochure for more details. In early September, I was able to do it in 6 hours round trip from the upper ropeway station with a couple of short breaks, since the route wasn’t busy. In the summer season the route can get crowded with traffic jams on the chains; a potentially dangerous situation. During the climbing season, huts provide the basic necessities. Carry water or be prepared to purchase drinks at the huts. For those with a bottle, water can be purchased in bulk for 200/l at the summit hut in season.
Darren DeRidder — Google review
Mt. Ishizuchi is the highest mountain in Western Japan (Kansai, Chugoku, Kyushu and Shikoku) at 1982m above sea level. The ropeway staff said police had warned first-timers in the area not to start climbing from the base, but I think it would've been okay to follow the ropeway line as a guide. So we took the ropeway up, and then from there it's about a 1.5~2 hour hike up to the top. There are several peaks, a few which are the same height. Note that there is only one way up, but if you don't want to walk round and round the trail going up, there are sections where you can climb up chains. Overall, I think the chains save you a bit of time, but it was busy on the day I went, and many climbers meant the chains had a lot of traffic congestion.
There's a shrine at the top, and many people come to pay their respects. There's also a souvenir shop and a small food joint. Alternatively, there's an instant cup noodle vending machine there too.
It wasn't as difficult as most locals make it out to be. And the views were definitely worth the hike!

Nakatsu Gorge is a beautiful and serene spot located in Kochi, Japan. The area is well known for its stone statues of deities, and is a popular destination for walkers and kayakers. The gorge is also home to several small villages, making it an interesting place to explore on foot.
I loved the place. There is a lot to explore. You can spend around an hour hiking there for sure.
I went on a Sunday in November and it was also not very crowded, so I could really enjoy nature. And it's for free, which is also really nice.
I would come again any time.
It is also reachable by bus, just check the times beforehand, because buses are not running frequently.

There's plenty of walking trails around the gorge, and my family spent up to 1 hour here just exploring the area. Not crowded with tourists and there's a nice little waterfall deeper in the gorge. Parking can be quite limited, try not to park at the first parking lot you see (with a steep incline) as you need to walk 5-10 minutes to reach the entrance. There are lots beside the entrance, over the bridge which are free.

You can do a small hike of around an hour way up. We went at the end of spring and it was good, also not hot at all. There wasn’t a single person so it felt even more natural. Once you reach the top you can go back through a road that takes 1/4 of the time.

Probably one of the best nature spots to visit in Japan. I went in the springtime in mid May and there were basically only several people on the trail. There are 5 spots that you will want to see which is depicted on the map on the left hand side when you go in. I went during a bright sunny day and there are quite a bit of stairs, some made of rocks so it could be quite slippery if it's wet or rainy.
I took my time and went to all 5 spots while taking a ton of pictures which took 2 hours total, including walking from and back to Nanokawa bus stop.
It is possible to get here with public transportation, just do your research first as busses do not run frequently in this area. Timetables also change depending if it's holiday or if it's the weekend.
Warning: The only washroom is at the entrance to Nakatsu Gorge so do your business first before heading in. There are also no vending machines along the hike so get a drink while you're at it.

Free. Feeds into Niyodo blue. Much more to see and a little hiking and waterfall is like hurricaine deck at Niagra. No hand rails. Dangerous for my 6 y.o. but we like adventure. Be careful and hold hands. Not crowded at all. We choose to skip Niyodo blue as it was Obon and it's a small busy spot. This was a better choice.
Tempest Rimuru — Google review
A visit in early November is probably a wrong timing, because the waterfall and river are depleted. The whole area is not as big as expected. The hiking trails are easy at first, and becoming moderately difficult afterwards. Shoes with good traction are recommended. Limited parking at the entrance. Overall, an average attraction spot for tourists. Nothing really memorable.

A pleasant escape from the hot and humid late summer weather you get in this part of Japan, as you go up, and deeper into the forest it becomes cool and pleasant with beautiful nature all around you.
Chris Miller — Google review
This is a stunning spot. I highly recommend it. The hike is easy though there are a few rocky places where you’ll want to have good shoes. Hike is short—maybe a 20 minute brisk walk each way, but I recommend budgeting more time to enjoy the scenery.
Access: you CAN get here by bus, contrary to what I was told at the tourist desk at Kochi station. The buses are very limited, but spaced out quite well for a day or half-day trip.
You’ll want to take the train first to Sakawa station. From there, take the bus bound for Nanokawa 名野川 (the final destination might display as 川渡). In some cases you might need to change buses at Osaki 大崎. I asked the folks at the Sakawa tourist info center for help and was told that buses past Osaki do not run on weekends. Nonetheless, once I got on the bus, it ran all the way to Nanokawa. If there is no bus past Osaki, you should call a taxi. It is technically possible to walk (about 3km) but as the road is a highway I don’t think it would be very comfortable.
Happy traveling!

Walking to Ishiteji from Dogo Onsen (up the stairs to Isaniwa shrine and then from the back parking lot of Isaniwa) is the best way to experience this temple (which is temple 51 of 88 on the Henro pilgrimage). We took a detour through the bamboo forest which led us to a creepy abandoned structures in the woods and made for a spectacularly eerie adventure (on a hiking trail that has not been well-maintained and was difficult to follow). When we emerged (at a cemetery) and continued down the road, we reached the inner temple which consisted of a giant golden dome and a haunting statue of an emaciated Buddha. Across the street, hidden behind a giant rock, was the entrance to the cave leading to Ishiteji. If we hadn't known to look out for this cave entrance, it's possible we would have walked right by. We walked through the cave, which was narrow, dank, and dimly lit, and stretched for about 200 metres (not recommended for claustrophobes). What a cool little experience! Once we arrived at Ishiteji, we explored the area a bit. It was peaceful and serene, nothing out of the ordinary and what you would expect for a Shinto shrine in Japan. I did notice that there were thousands of origami chains draped near the structures of the shrine made up of tens of thousands of tiny and colourful origami pieces - very impressive and I can't even imagine how long it took to make all of these. Behind the main building, there was a trail leading to the top of the hill and which should not be missed. If you take it all the way to the top, you can get a breathtaking 360 degree view of Matsuyama. This temple is definitely worth the visit, especially if you walk around and explore all of what surrounds it!

The parking lot for Daihoji Temple was located a little far away.
Daihoji Temple is located in the middle of a tour of the 88 sacred sites in Shikoku, so it is called the ``middle temple.''
It was built on a plateau at an altitude of 490 meters, and the precincts were surrounded by old trees, giving it a mysterious atmosphere.
The largest straw sandals in the temple are dedicated to the temple gate.
It is said that its construction dates back to the Kofun period.
It is said that a holy monk who came to Korea from Baekje brought an eleven-faced Kannon statue and placed it in the mountain.
In 701 (the first year of Taiho), brothers Myojin Ukyo and Hayato, hunters from Aki (Hiroshima), found an eleven-faced Kannon statue in the sedge grass.
It is said that the story spread to the capital, and a temple was built under the imperial order of Emperor Monmu.
The name of the temple, Daiho-ji, is said to have come from the name of the era at that time.
During the Konin era (810-824), Kobo Daishi also visited and changed the Tendai sect to the Shingon sect.
It is said that in 1156, when the Hogen Rebellion broke out, an imperial envoy of Emperor Goshirakawa prayed for the Emperor to recover from his brain disease, and he was cured.
Emperor Goshirakawa appointed Imomiya as the chief priest and sent an imperial plaque with the name of the mountain, ``Sugozan'', making it a designated temple.
There is an anecdote about Emperor Goshirakawa's prayer, and it is said to be beneficial for recovering from illness.

The Tobe Zoological Park is a large zoo with many different animals. It is well-balanced and has a lot of different spaces for visitors to walk through. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the zoo supports a rare sea otter endemic to Japan.
This zoo is pretty cool with a wide selection of exotic animals. It's definitely way bigger than my local zoo in the states. It has lots of information about the animals such as their name, origin, traits and age. It has cute gift shops with lots of souvenirs and decorations. Peace, the polar bear, is definitely the star of the show and the selling point of the zoo. The entry fee was very cheap: ¥500

Animals are kept in tiny cages or tight spaces resembling prisons only for human entertainment. Facilities are also old and worn out. Stresses are introduced to animals and it isn't humane.
This zoo is 35 years old and is still built with the design since then. It is heartbreaking to see animals being treated poorly. The zoo should either learn from other zoos and make itself better or shut down and send the animals to better places to end their suffering.

Although the appearance was a bit dated, the ticket price was only 500yen for an adult, and you could see a wide variety of animal species even polar bear, lions, hippos, rhinos and tigers. Definitely worth visiting, especially with kids.

It’s a lovely zoo.
You can see animals very close.
Some places you can feed the animals.

Don’t go and support places that keep animals in extremely poor condition for entertainment.
Why do they have a polar bear in a prefecture thats not even cold with rocks just painted white. The polar beat looks so tin, I wonder how they treat these animals.

I've been coming here ever since my grandfather took me here as a little girl. Now is my go-to stop every time I'm in Tobe! My favorite animal is Peace the Polar Bear, not only for her message but what she ment to me growing up. Also did you know that they support a rare sea otter endemic to Japan? Great Staff! Great service! and Great memories!

For only ¥500 it's definitely worth it! If you go early enough, you can even feed the sea lions. Buy 2 fish from a cooler, toss down to the hungry sea lions, and wash your hands with the soap and sink provided.
Monkeys were funny too.
