Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.

Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.

Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

Shirakawa-go is a historical village tucked away in a remote mountainous area that boasts traditional Gassho-style farmhouses. As one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, it is a must-visit for any tourist. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of the village makes it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It was nice. Seeing the traditional homes in that region up close was spectacular. There are plenty of shops to visit and buy reasonable priced trinkets. We stopped by the restaurant nearest to the entrance parking lot and had lunch. It was lovely.

Beautiful village!!!
It would be best if you can find a place and stay for a night near the village. You can visit it early in the morning next day. No crowded tourist before 8:30am.
There are few restaurant near by but only 1 open after 7:30pm. So be prepare and have your dinner before that.

A really scenic and peaceful place. Lots to see and do. There are many tourists that come here, however the place is so big, it's no big deal. As part of our tour, we also had a delicious meal. If you are in the region, definitely add this place to your list.

Nice, calm, beautiful area. Can have a lot of people walking around, but the vibe is rather pleasant and everyone seems to respect these lovely surroundings. We have a room with a back window looking right out over a wonderful stream. If you do your research and set the right expectations, I think you will love including a visit here within your regional travel plans.

I was amazed at this well presented Heritage town! The houses still accommodate the locals & stay over tourists. That was us!😊
The locals are early morning risers due to the thousands of tourists that converge during the day. I observed the locals dog walking, gardening & general outdoor cleaning in the early morning hours.
If you stay overnight, you really must arise early, you will have the village streets to yourself! We had a fabulous experience!

While this place is the most beautiful in wintertime, covered with snow, it is still very nice place to visit anytime of the year.
I visited Shiragawa-Go during Autumn and didn't disappoint. This place/village is very attractive. You can see why it is UNESCO world heritage site. People preserved old architecture, and village very well so you can feel like you warp to the past.

One of the Unesco World Heritage. A must visit.
A historical village that secluded beyond the mountain. It was a calm, serene, peaceful.
You need to go up to the hill to see and enjoy the whole village area from above. It was too beautiful.
The river and the water ditch sorround is super clear and clean as crystal

This is a traditional japanese village. It takes about 3-4 hours to cover the entire village. We visited here during early autumn. There is a bus to the observatory point. Cost is 200 JPY. But there is also a foot path to climb there. We used the bus to go uphill and used the footpath to come down. River side is very beautiful. Try to visit the museums if you are interested to see the historical things.

Well worth the bus ride (or rental car drive) to see these amazing houses built hundreds of years ago in a picturesque location. Spend at least 2-3 hours here to walk around and view the village, and grab a bite to eat or a souvenir. Visited on May 22, 2023.

A little town with all the good feels.
The houses are lovely. Everything is walkable. Homes are fascinating too.
Homes have no signal nail and are known for their roof structure that look like praying hands.
I particularly loved the cafe where you see the Shirakawago scenery whilst drinking coffee.
There was also a lunch menu for 2000 Yen with hida beef set super yummy.
Everything is great and amazing in this lovely town.

Love the small village feel and the unique high pitched thatched roofed houses and the river nearby. Has a couple of houses that you can pay (400Y) to go inside and experience the past (Myozinji house built since 1748). Need at least 6 hours here for visit. Kids will love the trouts living in the gutters along the streets.

We made a three hour stop here on our way to Kanazawa by bus. It's a bit of a tourist spot and good for a one hour stop only. It has lots of toilets around the town and two small cafes if you want a coffee. We found one restaurant which was open. A very nice town with a lot of original houses and you can also go up to the observatory. When we went there was a very large number of tourists.

We were lucky to see some snow when we visited this unique village in the north of Gifu.
Very unique house design and there were shops and restaurants around the village.
It's such a famous tourist attraction spot that at the time when I visited, there were more tourists than locals living in this area.
I would definitely recommend coming here when it's snowing a lot more than the pictures here.
Nicholas Tan — Google review
We have visited this place before and I have also reviewed this place previously and so I will keep this one "short and sweet".
This time round, we allocated more time here as previously we only stopped by here for about an hour (after our visit to Takayama Old Town) but didn't have much time to roam the place.
We arrived slightly before 3pm. Weather was cold (but it was much colder later on when the sun set) but the river had not fully frozen like in our previous trip. It was quite comfortable to walk under the sun and yet very cold condition.
More shops were opened as it was weekday (our previous visit was on a Sunday and many shops were closed then). So we could walk around and shop for local foods and souvenirs.
We loved the scenery, lots of greenery and beautiful cottage houses, and our mother nature was just right around us!
Surely it was a wonderful revisiting trip on this UNESCO World Heritage site! Definitely worth it!

A very quiet place for tourists to appreciate the old Japanese culture and architecture. The place is close to a number of local restaurants. We drove there on a weekday in March. Need to go through a lot of tunnels to reach there. Better equip with sun glasses because its tiring to drive among mountains with remaining snow. Both parking and restaurants are not too full. Kids can still hv snowball fights and build up snowman though we no longer could see snow on roof any more. Houses are close to each other and we could do some walking while not being too exhausted. Suggest to stay there for 2.5 hours including lunch. Love the place, being something different to visit in Japan.

A magical experience in this winter wonderland! It was snowing on Christmas Day! We had so much fun building a snowman. Many beautiful farm houses are covered in snow for great photos. Lots of souvenirs shops and little restaurants and dessert shops. The road leading up the observatory deck has turned icy, so need to walk slowly and carefully. The view from the observatory deck was breathtaking. It was an incline going up. Need to take breaks along the way. Don't forget to take pictures!

Very nice old town of thatched roof houses. All made with wood and ropes, no nails used in the construction.
It was snowing which added to the magic.
We were there relatively early with our car but there were already lots of people around. It's nice and you spend an hour going around and up to the observatory point. Don't take the bus, use the short walkway by the side, much better views of the village.

gorgeous ghasso town, we got so lucky with the snow (early march) - go to だんご屋 ゆたか on your way to the observation deck and try the sweet sake! so many places to eat in town and lots of cute souvenirs! make sure you buy a bus ticket back to where you’re going in advance (we got stranded for a few hours but we were lucky to get seats on the last bus)

Visit in the winter peak so temperature was -5. Beautiful and fairytale-like village, make sure you have your time after 3pm or before 10am as all same day tourists would arrive from 10am and leave by 3pm. Observation deck has beautiful view but extremely crowded most of the time.

Best stops along Yamagata to Kyoto drive
The top stops along the way from Yamagata to Kyoto (with short detours) are Goshikinuma Ponds, Bandai, and Echigo Sake Museum Ponshukan (Sake Sampling Service). Other popular stops include Yahiko Shrine, Mt. Haguro, and Uesugi Shrine.
Mt. Haguro, one of the Three Mountains of Dewa, is a popular destination for those interested in Shugendo. Visitors must climb 2446 steps to reach the famous pagoda atop the mountain. With its Shukubo pilgrim lodges, five-story pagoda, cedar forest, stone stairway and thickest thatch roof in all of Japan at Dewa Sanzan shrine, Mt.
A lot of stairs, but otherwise easy to climb with moderate condition. The cedar trees were splendid and the hunt for the extra temples was fun too.
Jasmin Fischbacher — Google review
A very special hike from the five-story pagoda entrance – the winter wonderland in a cedar forest was amazing, with the snow coming down. The visitor centre at the top has a very helpful hot water dispenser in a heated room. On the way out you can find an excellent teahouse across the road serving sublime desserts.

I hiked to Mt. Haguro on July 14th. Although you can go to the by car or bus I started to climb from the stairs to feel what it means to the Shintoists. It was tiring to step 2446 stone steps but it worths to do that. The hike stars after you enter from the temple gate near to the tourist information. You can come here by car or bus. Free parking available. There is a toilet and vending machines around before you star the hike. There are many small shrines on the way. Japanese cedar trees are gorgeous. They are 200 ~ 500 years old. Don’t miss the grandpa cedar tree. Based on the information written there are 284 on the right side and 301 on the left side totaling 585 cedar trees. The path was easier than expected actually. You are not just ascending all the time. Some parts are straight and helps you relax. It is 1.7 km long and there is a small resting area where you can enjoy a coupe of coffee or noodles with spectacular view. 5 stairs Togendo is near to the starting point. There are gourd pictures drawn on some of the stones. There are 33 in total but I could find few only. The temples on the top were great looking. This mountain represents birth and it is one of the three mountains that Shintoist priests climb to be purified. Climbing stone stairs made me think of the pain of a women before the birth. Once you get the top you forgot all the pains in your legs and feel relaxed and calm. The thickness of the roofs of the temples were very thick and all of them decoded exclusively. I highly recommend this place.
Check the photos I posted here to get to know more about the hike in July. Like this comment if it was helpful.

This place is majestic. One of the best places to visit in Yamagata.
Brief history: Dewa Sanzan (出羽三山, "three mountains of Dewa") are three sacred mountains in Yamagata Prefecture, each with a shrine on or near its peak. The mountains are named Haguro-san, Gas-san and Yudono-san and remain centers of mountain worship. Representing birth (Haguro-san), death (Gas-san) and rebirth (Yudono-san), the mountains are usually visited in that order.
Dewa Sanzan is a center of Shugendo, a folk religion based on mountain worship, blending Buddhist and Shinto traditions. Shugendo practitioners, called yamabushi, perform feats of endurance as a means of transcending the physical world. Training includes such tasks as long pilgrimages and endurance of the elements.
Notorious RSSM — Google review
I’ve climbed this mountain more than 100 times and every single time it manages to send shivers up my spine. The lowest of the Dewa Sanzan, Mt. Haguro is a Mecca for all things Shugendo. The Shukubo pilgrim lodges, five story pagoda, cedar forest and stone stairway, then the thickest thatch roof in the whole of Japan at Dewa Sanzan shrine mean that Mt. Haguro is a definite must see for anyone coming to Tohoku. I’ve written an in-depth article on my website, and am part of a group called Yamabushido that offers life-chaning Yamabushi training through master Hoshino of Daishobo pilgrim lodge. Be sure to check it out!

Very much worth the effort. Not super easy walk at a little over 2000 steps but also its a beautiful walk also. Raining day I went but went anyway due to effort of getting here on limited time. Well worth the effort I feel.
Chris Hall — Google review
You will feel a profound sense of serenity once you step inside the mountain. We went at late March when there was still some snow on the trail. We walked all 2446 steps up the mountain and it was definitely the most captivating experience in my life. You wouldn't be able to see such views if you took the bus! Of course you could also take the bus up and walk down, but that could be more risky because of the snow on the path and the narrow steps.
Also it was worth the detour to go to minamidani mid-way along the route, you will be astounded by the view at the end of the path.

Upon entering the temple, visitors will encounter numerous small shrines before encountering a serene river with a red bridge that leads deeper into nature. I visited here on July 14th to hike Mt. Hagora. It was beautiful and calm. There are free parking lots around. After you enter the temple you will see lots of small shrines on the way. Soon a river with a red bridge welcomes you to deep into the nature. Pagoda is very close here. It is mainly before starting the steps up to the mountain. The path is only 2 m wide and if you fall you are surely injured. The view from the mountain is also very good. Two holes are there. One with a lot of steam and another with not much. On October 14,2019 I had a chance to hike Mt. Issaikyo and Mt. Azuma. I was planning to start from Jododaira parking lot but unfortunately the road was closed due to the maintenance after the typhoon 19th. So I parked my car at Takayu onsen village. I saw three people planning to hike with the help of them I found the trail head. The path is crossing the Bandai Azuma Skyline road a couple of times. Just follow the sigs and keep going through the trees. This path is very challenging specially after a rain. It is narrow and not well maintained. Be ready for it. It will be split but you need to stay with the Azuma (吾妻山頂上), Lake Goshikinuma (五色沼)or Issaikyo (一切経頂) signs. They are only in Japanese and it is hard to see some of them. You will be amazed with autumn colors if it is Oct or Nov. There is no shelter but you can find water flows. Once you reach the first peak you will see amazing scenery of the nearby mountains. The highest peak on your left is the Mt. Issaikyo. After a short break I kept moving. It was a bit rainy and windy but not cloudy. So I could see the lake Goshikinuma 五色沼 -5 colors lake. This is another amazing view before the peak. The path goes towards right. You will see X sigs on the left so don’t go that way. From here on there is not much trees and you will be able to see around clearly. The peak takes around 20 min. This is the Mt. Issaikyo 1948.8 m altitude. The point where I started was 760. It took me 3h 10 min to get there with very less amount spending at breaks. Take your time and enjoy spectacular view of Mt. Azuma Ko Fuji (small fuji) and autumn colors. The path goes along the colored ropes. The left (towards Azuma ko fuji) is not allowed. Soon you will see the Lake Kamanuma and an emergency hut on your right. The lake, amazing autumn colors, the sound of water from the creak nearby, clear mountains’ view, nice weather and easy path what else you like to see on your hike. I didn’t want to move a bit. The shelter is for everyone and open but the toilets were closed due to the maintenance. After this point you can either choose to go to see the lake closer (400 m one way) and take a walk around it or keep going from left towards to the Jodododaira parking lot where the most popular trailhead. The scenery here is also breathtaking. It took me less than 30 min to get the parking area. This place and path are very well maintained. There are restaurant, bathrooms, rest house etc. As it was closed after the typhoon I was the only one hiking and all the places were closed. It was a bit scary to be honest. I didn’t hike to Azuma kofuji but it seems that it is an easy hike. It won’t take more than 45 min to get the top and have a walk around the ring of the crater. I knew that it will be a long way to get where I parked my car but I was satisfied with what I have seen so far. I just kept going along with the car road. It is around 19 km and wouldn’t be easy. There was a helicopter patrolling and some workers trying to fixed the road damaged. I try to act normal and kept going :) After about an hour a minivan just passed me and stopped about 100 m away. They came to offer me a ride which was a life saving moment. I was thrilled with their kindness. These were two of the workers going to Takayu onsen area. I was very happy when I saw my car and decided to celebrate this by having a hot spring moment. After all it was a great experience hiking alone on a challenge path during the peak season of the autumn colors. I recommend you to use the Jododaira trailhead not the one I used :)

You can feel the majestic nature.
Trail? A promenade? It's well maintained.
The wooden stairs are non-slip and can be easily climbed even with sneakers.
*I think that shoes with high heels are a pain...
You can walk around the bowl, but the footing is not good.
The round gravel is slippery, so you need to be careful even with trekking shoes. It's best not to visit pots lightly.
There are many days when the wind is strong, so if you want to take a walk, it's better to stay at the promenade.
It's a very pleasant place, so if you visit Jododaira, please try climbing it. Recommended.

While in Fukushima, I was recommended to head up mount Azuma-kofuji to enjoy the view.
So come the morning, I begin my ascent and instantly was met with fantastic views as I Drove up. Each 300 meters was another great photo spot and view of the area below.
Once I reached the resting area at the top, I was greeted with more great views and a fun souvenir shop that second as an educational building.
It was a great experience visiting but next time I will need to prepare as the sulfur smell from the active funnels was everywhere below the summit.

The stairs are quite steep, but once you reach the top, it becomes a normal mountain climbing course. On that day, the wind 🌪 was so strong that I felt like I was going to be blown away. When walking around the crater, I recommend walking in the middle because it's really dangerous. If you walk on the edge, the strong wind will make you sway, and you'll feel like you'll fall straight down.

So beautiful!!!! There’s paid parking that cost 500 yen for the day. The drive up was gorgeous and once you get there, make sure you climb the steps up to the crater and walk all around the rim. It’s a spectacular view and a once in a lifetime experience that shouldn’t be missed.
There is a restaurant and gift shop inside the main building along with toilets both inside and out. We found it easier to go up the left side of the crater and come down the right side and the slope on the right is milder.

Great intermediate hike. I don’t recommend for first time hikers to solo but you’ll be fine in a group with experienced hikers. You don’t need expensive gear to make it to the top but nice boots and crampons wouldn’t hurt. The views from the top are worth the sweat.

Uesugi Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the renowned samurai warrior Uesugi Kenshin of the warring states period. It houses a vast collection of artifacts and exhibits that offer insight into his life and works. This great leader had once ruled over Echigo before his clan was relocated to Yonezawa after being defeated by Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara in 1600.
I visited Uesugi Jinja when visiting Yonezawa and I definitely would recommend it to any visitors! This temple was peaceful to walk through and take in the beautiful nature surrounding it. The temple was quiet and not crowded. Around the temple was a beautiful river the many coi fish that locals were feeding with bread. This was something so special and pure to witness. This temple sold Goshuinchou and omamoris.

Roadside Station Atsumi Shanrin YuhinoAtsumi is an exceptional rest stop located by the sea. Its unique inverted boat-like buildings and 24-hour open rest area make it a wonderfully refreshing stop for travelers. The sea water here surprisingly lacks any salt, allowing visitors to experience its smooth and fresh breath. Lake Hibara is a picturesque body of water that was created by volcanic activity. The lake boasts stunning views, with a blue color theme present throughout the scenery, including the sky and floating islands in the middle of the lake. Visitors can partake in various activities such as boating, hiking, fishing, and camping in this serene location. With so many freshwater lakes, Fukushima is an ideal place for those who like to paddle.
There are many places where you can rent your own canoe and explore independently.
If you are a beginner there are opportunities to join small groups with an instructor, who will introduce you to the basics of paddling and safety on the water, and then lead you into easy but exhilarating canoeing routes.
The calm waters of Lake Onogawa and Lake Hibara are perfect for leisurely rides. Lake Inawashiro offers a very long coastline, suitable for the more experienced.

I went in winters, January start - it was snow everywhere. The autumn colors were obviously not seen. I saw something different. The place is totally a hidden trek during this time, no one to be seen around and the bus timings are with long gaps. Just look at the view - Photos are not black and white. I saw the bear sign late and nobody was there and the heavy snow was falling from the trees, it made me ache. Follow here in autumn season for the fun. Wil be going back again, it was beautiful with the frozen lakes too.

Absolutely stunning hiking trail in winter. The snow makes the area stunning. And walking through the snow with snow boots(needs rental of wide racket like shoes) is great. Doing the entire trail is better than returning after slight ventures into either end. Snow is deep in winter and boots/guide is mandatory. We did it without a guide.
Check beforehand if the visitor centre is open or not. We had to rent from a far away shop. Taxis can be booked from the nearby kankou centre.

Minato Marche Pier Bandai is an energetic indoor setting that offers a variety of fresh seafood, meat, and locally sourced produce. Although smaller than the Tokyo fish market, there are still numerous excellent options available. Instead of cooked seafood restaurants, there are more sashimi and grilled fish related establishments at this location. In addition to the fish market offerings, adjacent vegetable and meat markets provide additional choices for visitors.

The opening time is 1030am and I arrived on 1045am. There was a long queue at that time. After the queue, I took the ticket on 11am and the number was 88. I entered my japan phone number so I could walk outside of the restaurant, I got the phone calling on 1315pm.
I waited until 1345pm to have the seat. I could take the sushi on the conveyor belt or ordered directly to the sushi master.
The quality of food was good, I will recommend 特大赤エビ, エビフライ and pudding ( original favour ) [ XL Red shrimp. Fried shrimp and original puddings ]
Cost ¥8800/ 2 adult ( we both ate so much )
I left on 1430pm.

Pier Bandai fish market 新潟魚市場 in Niigata is not as big as the one in Tokyo but still with many nice choices. But unlike in Tokyo where there are a lot of restaurants where cooked seafood is served, here are more related to sashimi and grilled fish. Next to the fish market, there are vegetable and meat markets and there are more restaurants. Yet, price is definitely a lot cheaper here. After all, Niigata is a small compared to Tokyo :)

Buy sashimi, oysters, cooked food, draft beer from the market and eat on the deck chairs and enjoy. No stress from queuing at the restaurants.

Really fresh seafood at reasonable prices. Outside area has common chairs and tables where you can eat the food you purchased from the fish market. There’s also a supermarket that sells local produce and a few restaurants and coffee places. Worth the visit. We took the city loop bus to get here.

There’s a lot of restaurant there, not only selling fish but also there’s a liquor shop, meat shop, and vegetable shop. But definitely you should try a sashimi set there, very fresh and cheap compared with Tokyo
The Befco Bakauke Observation Deck, located on the 31st floor of the Toki Messi building, offers breathtaking panoramic views of both the city and surrounding waters through its expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. Visitors can enjoy unobstructed vistas in all directions, taking in the entirety of Niigata's stunning landscape. While nighttime visits are still impressive, be mindful that bright lights may reflect off camera lenses.

Free observation tower with a great view and fantastic place to catch the sunset. They had an event cafe at the time we went (snoopy) though the cafe closed at 1830. The elevator with the window is on the second floor heading to the hotel Entrance on the left nearest the wall.

Beautiful views of the city and beyond. Be warned that if you go at night the lights are a bit bright so they reflect off the glass into your camera if you take a picture. At least when I went there was some private event preventing the north east side from being viewed. The rest of the view was still very nice. Also be sure to visit the toilets as the east view is visible from there!

Cave D'Occi Winery is a countryside destination that offers tours and samplings of its wines, as well as an on-site restaurant and bakery. Visitors can also enjoy art exhibitions at the gallery. It's a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a peaceful café setting with stunning views. Guests can indulge in wine tastings and browse through their range of products for sale, featuring various goods.
A stretch located in Niigata where all the wineries are concentrated. It’s a pity that when we visit, the season is already over for grapes and all we see is fruitless vines.
But we visited the restaurant/ cafe and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon lunch. The ingredients used were fresh and the taste was awesome. Service was exemplary as well.

The shrine complex of Yahiko Shrine is situated in a lush forest at the base of Mount Yahiko, and boasts a rich history spanning centuries. The annual chrysanthemum festival, currently ongoing, showcases an array of exquisite blooms as well as impressive bonsai and floral arrangements. It's truly a sight to behold seeing the shrine surrounded by such natural beauty.

About 15 minutes walk from Yahiko Station.
It was a visit in the rain, but there were many worshipers. There is a mountain behind the main shrine, but when the rain stopped, the fog turned to the sky and it was a mysterious sight.
If you go by train, there aren't many trains, so it's a good idea to check the time.

There was a flower exhibition when I visited. So there was a whole bunch of flowers on display. The shrine itself is decently large and even had an animal pen with deers in there! The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery and exudes calm and soothing peacefulness. It is however quite out of the way to visit as it requires a few train changes and limited ways of leaving. Making the trip a day commitment. But it was well worth it for me!
Tsunderin ! — Google review
Go to Yahiko station and then walk about 20 minutes according to the available signs.
Yahiko station is an old station, still retains the old architecture and does not have an automatic card check counter. There will be staff to check train tickets.
There is also a treasure that is a 2.3m long sword called Shida no Otachi, the longest sword and included in the list of Cultural Property of Japan.
In particular, in the temple grounds there are two stones called "Hi no tama ishi" (火の玉石) which means "stone of fireballs", or commonly known as "Omokaru no ishi" (重) 軽の石) means "light heavy stone". It is said that when standing in front of these two stones, pray, then if you lift the stone and it feels light, your wish will come true, but if it is heavy, the wish will not come true.

Came here by car. Easy to get to. Huge parking space, easy access. The shrine is big and really nice to visit, the personnel (mikos) friendly and helpful. Just don't expect English. Japanese is required, however broken it may be. There's also a tourist district which we took a wide berth around because I don't trust these kinds of places in general.
Anyway I wanted to buy Omamori and the miko was nice and patient enough to explain to me what the difference between them was.
We came back two days later by train. More of a pain, but still doable. Also the train station looks amazing. They're really trying to sell the whole shrine asthetic.

The shrine is solemn and good, but there is a ropeway in the back and you can go to the top of the mountain. There is also a shrine at the top. You can climb without using the ropeway, but it is impossible if you feel lighthearted. Nagaoka is a city on Japan’s main Honshu Island. In the center, near the Shinano River, the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art has 20th-century Japanese works and a sculpture garden. Niigata Prefectural Museum of History exhibits prehistoric Jōmon pottery. North of the city, the grand Yahiko Shrine sits at the foot of Mount Yahiko. A cable car ascends to the peak. Southeast are the hot springs of Yomogihira.
It was great to see one of Japan's endangered bird species called Toki (scarlet crested ibis) and I got to learn about their history.
It was nice seeing not only the Japanese Toki, but there were other Ibises from different countries too
Kevin Tanzyl — Google review
I absolutely loved the experience. I was a bit sceptical at first about animals living in cages. But I came to find that they treat the animals well. The staff explained a lot about the birds, especially about the couple in the breeding (which starts next month) cage. Safe from snow and rain, with fresh living fish to eat!
Toki a absolutely cute birds! You should come here! And be careful when the last bus leaves. The staff even reminded me of the imminent leave. Great service!
If you miss it - there are some beautiful shrines and temples in the area! A stroll around the neighborhood is worth it!

A bird park and garden, though it is not extremely big. Set aside, say, an hour or so. This location is a must-see for Sado Island, since you can see crested ibis birds in the flesh. Other related birds are also available, as is a museum regarding the birds, and a mascot who turned out to be surprisingly fun to take photos with. (The character in my photo is Torisumi Horou, a crested ibis.) I was impressed by the staff's ability to answer various questions about the birds in general, as well as about the specific crested ibis in the breeding cage area. Do note that you need to be lucky for the crested ibis to go close to the viewing windows -- typically, they'll be far away, and you can only see them through telescopes (pictured). There is a souvenir shop and an ice cream store available. Lastly, fees are minimal, and almost surely worth paying anyway to contribute to the island's nature conservation efforts.

Conservation park for Japanese ibis bird, it’s a fun experience for family and kids and also it’s a nice nature trail and rice farms along the route to tokinomori Park. Entrance fee is 400 yen per person. They have exhibition hall which has all exhibits regarding tiki birds and they have outdoor section with the actual conservation park. The park is divided in 3 parts. The exhibition area, the outdoor caged area and a third bigger cage area.

Very rarely is an entire region so eagerly dedicated to a single species; it really shows here. Here, you can explore every single aspect of the crested ibis (toki). They even have a plush you can lift to feel how heavy they are. Of course they have plenty of the actual birds for you to look at as well. They are, of course, very cute.

The resort also provides equipment rentals and dining facilities. If arriving by car, there are numerous parking lots at the entrance. The snow park is very large and ideal for sledging and playing in the snow. One of the best skiing areas I have been in Japan. There are a variety of different ski lifts to go for different levels of difficulty. The highest peak closes at around 4:30pm which is a safe thing as during winter it gets dark rather early. However, if you still want to ski during the night there is also a night time area where you could ski well into The night. If you choose to go there be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and gloves and they tend to freeze, yes, freeze as the snow melts on your gloves and freezes again.
You can choose to live in one of the few hotels that are on The mountainside (1/4 up The mountain I think) where they provide Japanese style living quarters with public bathrooms and onsen (little small) as well as catering (small portions for those who are used to western portions).
On a good day with clear weather the view is simply stunning. And is worth every penny and minute getting there.

For all sake lovers, this is sake heaven on earth!!! There are more than 100 types of sake to sample from. ¥500 gets you 5 tokens. Each sample is approximately 1 token. The bespoke sake may require more than 3 tokens. There is no reason not to like this place. Super love!!!

I could not appreciate sake until I came here. They rate them with dryness, aroma, and richness. I got a sake that was 5 star dry and 1 star aroma/richness and then got one with 1 star dry and 4 star aroma/richness. You can tell the difference with each one. It's a smaller place and when it was crowded, a lot of people were standing in front of the sake dispenser even if they were just drinking. It made it harder to get to the sake I wanted to try and to read the name plate and description.

1st time trying sake sampling machine! 500 yen for 5 coins, and most of the sake costs you 1-3 coins, i.e. 100-300 yen each. So it's not that cheap compared to other local sake stores, but there are plenty of sake choices than other shops. It's an interesting experience that you must try once.

Amazing sake brewery tour in English. The guide is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They can give many cool facts about sake that are hard to learn about otherwise! There's even a fun photo opportunity at the end of the tour, as well as an excellent sake tasting experience!

Service really bad towards non Japanese. Sake taste also just as unfriendly. Go to the Niigata or Nagaoka station branches. Too many foreigners around Echigo and the staff are not having it.

You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the vending machines.
There is more than enough sake to choose from. Nearly 100 sake to choose from! You can also choose Shōchū and I believe I saw wine but we were there for the sake.
You can also get cucumbers to munch on. You can either have that with various types of salt or miso paste.
Water is available to cleanse your pallet.
Very enjoyable and heaven if you love sake!

We can enjoy many kinds of sake with only 500 yen. It was too crowded with many tourists... The selection is very plentiful, so I could not enjoy everything but each of them have various characters. It is because I like sake the best. You can buy it if you find sake you like.

A wealth of samples with Niigata nihonshu, wine and umeshu. Anyone can stay longer and chat with friends while waiting for your train home.

I give it a 5 star! It’s so awesome where you can taste literally all sake made by the neighbours!

Nice place for sake tasting. For those that wonder how it works. You pass by the cashier and for 500¥ you get 5 coins. They give you a cup and you are able to serve yourself. Some sake required one coin and can go up to four. You are able to taste a lot of different sake from different regions and there is also wine.

A place for sake tasting. Located inside JR Echigo Yuzawa. A really weird and spectacular place. Too many kinds of sake were presented as vending machine. At first while you enter the staff will give you tasting cups. Japanese cucumbers with too many kinds of salt was so delicious. Always crowded. The shop was easily saw. You will see their mascot, the large figure of drunken guy lay down in front of the shop.

Enjoying walking around the souvenir shops inside JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station.
There are a lot of local foods, sweats and Japanese sake as well as local restaurants.
Great place to visit and enjoy!

Drink Deep. You’re in the Snow Country.
The Ponshukan Saké Tasting Room features nearly 100 types of saké from Niigata’s 90 breweries. Arranged by geographic location, take your pick from among seasonal specials, staff recommendations, or whichever labels happen to catch your eye.
Visitors can pay ¥500 at the door to receive a saké cup and five tasting coins. Sample up to five cups of saké or use multiple tasting coins to sample from a selection of premium saké.
As the microbrewery saké capital of Japan, there is no better place to experience saké than Niigata.

There are 130 coin operated vending machines to choose from. Most of them dispense sake, but they also do soju, plum wine and red wines as well. Coins are 100 yen each. Most machines take 1 coin, and premium drinks are 2 or more.
There is space to put your bags or coats if you don’t want to carry them around, but nothing is secured, so do so at your own risk.
The staff are polite and accommodating.

A nice sake shop. You can also buy other Omiage, also the very big Onigiris (Rice Balls).
It’s in the station, so you can reach it very fast.

Great variety of Sake and other liquors to choose from. 130 types in total. ¥500 gives you 5 coins, most of the sakes are 1 coin per cup. The premium ones are 2 coins and above. Definitely worth a visit if you're around the area.

We stopped by the ponshukan on our first day in the area. There is a wide variety of sake to choose from, as well as some shochu and other tipples.
You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the dispensing machines. We went through 15 gold-coins each. Some dispensers cost more than one coin, there are a good number of 2-coin machines and even one 7-coin machine! (We didn't try that one) If you want to get the most out of your coins, then there are plenty of 1-coin machines that have some great tasting sake. My favourite (number 69) was actually a 1-coin machine.
There are cucumbers and salt available as pallete-cleansers, but I opted for having an occasional water after some of the particularly strong tasting options.
There is no seating, it's standing room only. Which makes sense as customers (and you) will be moving back and forth to sample a number of drinks.
Fair warning: Beware of the alcohol % of number 95!

The price was 500 yen and you get 5 coins in return, the sake cost 1-2 coins depending on the type, there's a recommended sake list on the board if you dont know where to start. Was very fun! This way you can really tell the difference between types of sake

Waiting for my Shinkansen I walked in, amazed at how many sake you can sample
500jpy for 5 coins and you are given a small cup
Recommended sakes are on the wall, but there are some I wanted to try that are here
Some same cost more than one coin
Had great fun trying different sake, as ppl know Niigata is famous for sake

Conveniently located right at the train station. Managed a quick visit right before boarding our Shinkansen - and chanced upon this really awesome umeshu (which I ended up purchasing from the store).
A must-go if you are a Sake fan! There are SO MANY types of sake to test! ❤️

Fun and inventive sake tasting experience. Pay the fee, get cups and coins then start tasting!
Suggestions are on the wall in English and Japanese.

Kagura Ski Resort Tashiro Station is a popular destination for skiing enthusiasts due to its powdery slopes and access to backcountry terrain. It is especially suitable for beginners, boasting two fast lifts and a slow one without being too overcrowded. The resort offers access to the Naeba area and boasts a large ski area with high altitude, providing ideal snow conditions.
Went at end of April still good snow with lots of locals still skiing and boarding
Chris Staiti (CJS) — Google review
Beautiful mountain with a view of a beautiful lake next to the slope. Doesn’t have very good snow till end of Dec but I would very recommend this slope for anytime after Jan. not too far from Tokyo so that’s a plus as well.

This is my new favorite spot to set up base! With relative easy access to all three areas: Naeba, Tashiro, & Kagura. Even if this area is closed (it has a shorter season than the other two) You can still bus it to the others. The pistes are awesome Dec-Feb! Once you get down the hill from the ropeway the deeper runs are nice and wide, & long. The lifts are relatively fast, and this place has the best powder of the three imo.
This is for folks that have their ski and board legs under them. I wouldn't recommend it if this is your first time on a board or skis. Naeba is the best if the three for that imo. (It also has seemingly more capability to accommodate the international crowd).
It has been the least crowded of the three each time I've went. The dressing room is tiny but the lobby is huge. Way better than Kagura. The ropeway to the slopes is The public bath was filthy, and I truly mean nasty for Japanese standards. Perhaps it was because I went in so late but there was film and hair in the water. I turned on the hot water to let it all flow over the side. A simple constant flow would alleviate it from getting so many bad reviews. I stepped on the hill. No park area that I found but you have Kagura area for that.
I went on Christmas Day Saturday and it wasn't too crowded at all. At times, I felt as if I had the hill to myself. My best experience in the greater Yuzawa area to date! I will definitely set up base here next time up.
BE EXTREMELY AWARE OF THE BUS SCHEDULES! I can’t stress this enough! It’s around 40 min to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The last buses to or from run around 5pm. It’s around ¥10000 cab ride so plan accordingly! Firs bus runs around 5am with the next one around 8.

Tashiro is one of three areas at Kagura. Mostly wide open easy slopes. It takes a little time getting across to the Kagura and Mitsumata areas because you keep going more across the mountain rather than up (you'd need to be at least taking 5 lifts).
Due to its higher altitude, Kagura has one of the longest season in Japan (Nov-May) and there was still plenty of snow late (photos taken 30 Mar) and not too slushy, whereas at Naeba next door there wasn't much white stuff left.
There are two restaurants both not huge (they're packed during lunch hours), with other options over at Kagura or Mitsumata area. Strangely the restaurants offer no view of the lake despite both of them being right next to it! Instead go up lift Y for a spectacular view of the lake.

Best ski resort for beginners.
2 fast lifts and a super slow one But not crowded at all. There is access to Naeba area as well.
Not many food options for vegetarian/vegan in the ski area.

It's beautiful but if the small lift was too fast and I fell out on the lift. THANK that I wear a helmet and protection body but still hurt I got hit by a fast lift 3 times and my butt bruised so bad. Not going to that area again :(
AMC ANNA — Google review
Very large ski area that very high altitude offering superb snow conditions.
Snow Scoots and Snow Moto’s welcome here on 100% of the lifts and slopes!

Intermediate skier / rider recommended but a big place to explore. Didn’t like the idea of taking the rope way up to the base of the resort though
Sean Eng — Google review
Nice ski area well set up for beginners. Good quality snow. Ropeway is fast and efficient, around 7km.
English signs are pretty rare but it didn't detect much from the resort. Connected to Naeba by a gondola or you can take a shuttle bus.
Good place for families who are serious about their skiing.

Beautiful terraced rice fields
This place is famous for its beautiful terraced rice fields.
From web site
Terraced fields are a form of rice field mainly used in mountainous areas. They are built to allow farming on steep slopes and to control water flow. It is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic and cultural value. They are also important for preserving regional specialties and traditional agricultural methods.

Takada Castle is a feudal-era castle located in Japan and features three turrets, surrounded by a moat and park, making it an ideal spot for cherry blossom viewing. This 19th century castle from the Meiji period has two observation decks on the first and second floors that offer stunning views of the surroundings. The entry fee to visit the castle is 300 yen per person while fish feeding can also be enjoyed there.
What a cute little castle! According to the brochure, this castle lacks some features common to other castles because it was constructed in a rush due to an impending attack. It's fascinating to see what they pulled off in only a limited time.

This is a beautiful park to walk around in. The view of the castle with hydrangeas was perfect. The moat is loaded with koi, which I could watch all day! We didn’t visit the castle itself, but you can easily see it as you walk by.

Takada Castle is one of the top 3 spots for yozakura(lit. night sakura) when you are here at Takada castle during the spring season, almost every turn you see Sakura. Suggest going on a day trip. Takada only have this spot which is the best during Sakura season. According to locals, there’s also a river with lots of lotus during summer.

Seki Onsen Ski Area is a compact ski resort that's famous for its deep powder snow, steep slopes, and tree runs. It's the ultimate destination for freeriders who crave an adrenaline rush on mean deep powder rides. However, this resort is not recommended for inexperienced riders due to the depth of the snow. Avalanche kits are highly recommended as well, and solo riding is not advisable.
Epic powder heaven.
Not for beginners.
Be ready to hike and self rescue.

Indeed great snow here but you'll get bored quickly with only two lifts, and one (the single pizzabox) was closed the day we came... The primary lift only accesses two runs, one groomed and one ungroomed.... Seems there is opportunity for a bit of exploration for backcountry deep powder, so snowboarders seem to love it here. We spent a half-day afternoon as a warm up to full days at the bigger resorts, not a bad option if you arrive around 12:30 and only 3000 yen. There are no crowds here but you could say that about anywhere in Myoko.... Slope-side restaurant was charming.

Seki onsen ski area is privately owned by a very nice and cool family. The runs are mostly in groomed and the food is home cooked style and it is THE BEST ski area lunch I have ever had in Japan!
The onsen is also one not to be missed! The onsen is red in color and the aroma is amazingly calming!
Check them out if you love ungroomed runs!

Super small, only two lifts, one of them is a sketchy one-seater. But a lot of fun on a powder day, lots of tree runs available. So if the snow is good, check this place for a day..

Seki is the true freeriders mountain if you're into powder & I mean deep powder riding then this is the best place to be , in my 32 years of riding this little resort had the best powder I've experienced with pillows and more pillows of pow pow. not for inexperienced rider due to it's deepness , my partner almost drowned here here from too much power, avalanche kits are recommended & riding alone not really suggested. NUFF Said 👍👍👍😎😲😉
