Sumpu Castle Park
Park
Sights & Landmarks
Castle
Sumpu Castle Park is a city park famous for its spring cherry blossoms and the reconstructed remains of an ancient castle. It offers a unique blend of history and modernity, with the remnants of the Japanese castle creating a delightful backdrop. While there are not many original castle structures left, the park has been transformed into a beautiful and serene environment that seamlessly integrates modern elements with its historical past.
Nice walking area with several paths, a nice garden, and two historical museums. Though the museums are 95% japanese text as of April 2024.
There's also a nice 30 minute boat ride around the moat for 1000¥. The boat tour guide only speaks in Japanese as well but that's okay, you can focus on taking pictures. Note at the end of the ride the roof is lowered and you have to bend down while you go under the low bridge. One tip, board on the left side of the boat which means you'll be on the right side while going around the park. It has a better view for pictures most of the ride.

A famous spot right next to Shizuoka Station. Ruins are scattered across the vast grounds. As you walk around the restored turret, you can clearly understand the historical background. The garden was also a nice place. It's interesting to see the excavation site of the remains of the castle tower. You can listen to explanations from volunteers for free, so give it a try.

I went for the Shizuoka festival! It was a beautiful park to enjoy the Sakura blossoms and spend time with family and friends. Lots of food stalls and even shows during the festival. I would like to come back next year!

Decent but not a must visit! Just a casual park with chill vibes.
Jay Jia — Google review
Went to the park that has Tokugawa Ieyasu statue and his orange groves. Was very impressed and nice to make his acquaintance. I traveled to Shizuoka and have learned a lot in the last two days and having a guide helped because I was able to go to all the places of interest that I wanted to experience. Took many pictures of trees and the moat area as well. Shizuoka is an interesting place and everyone should visit this place at least once in their life.

Definitely worth the visit if you are in the area. Bring picnic items and make it a date.

The castle itself is long gone, but has the gatehouse and large grounds. The hana matsuri was in full flow when I was there. The place looked at its best. The only downside was that the rubbish bins were inadequate for the festival; consequently, there were huge piles of litter heaped around them.

Sunpu Castle At Aoi-Ku, Shizuoka, Shizuoka.Japan
Relaxing .a MUST see in the list !
The castle grounds are now replaced by a nice and relaxing park. Nonetheless a lot of castle remains can be found throughout the park. In the big park signs are everywhere to make sure you will not get lost.
The park itself is very peaceful and nicely set up. It is also used for all kind of public activities.
One has to pay to enter the Sumpu Castle Park though (Adults ¥360, children less) as well as additionally fees if you wish to visit one or both of the reconstructed turrets.

A nice and clean quaint zoo that started in the 60s. Most of the animals seemed content and well cared for. I enjoyed my time here. Watch out for school trips as the zoo can become quite busy.

Nihondaira Ropeway, located in Shizuoka, provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can enjoy a scenic ride up a smaller mountain and admire the majestic Mt. Fuji from above. At the mountaintop, there is a beautiful shrine waiting to be explored, adding cultural significance to the natural beauty of the area.
Kunōzan Tōshōgū, a picturesque Shinto shrine established in 1617, is a must-visit in Shizuoka Prefecture. It honors Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and a key figure in Japanese history. The shrine's serene ambiance and stunning architecture make it an ideal place to pay respects to this influential leader.
It was very interesting since the ride to the hill shared very interesting facts. It has a lot of cool stuff owned by the shoguns in the Edo period in the museum too! It made me take a lot of pictures. You should go if you like visiting shrines.
Venti Thebard — Google review
Beautiful shrine and tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Amazing views of the Shizuoka bay as well as the Mt. Fuji. Look for the upside down Tokugawa emblem that represent the unfinished and imperfect nature of beauty. Illumination of the shrine during November. Take the rope way, walking up to the top could be a challenge. A must see when in Japan

The Kunozan Toshogu shrine is worth a visit if you're in the area. It's historically significant and also really rather impressive. The steps up the hillside can be a chore (take a bottle of water with you), particularly in warm weather.

Historical place. Somehow, it is popular to Japanese because of very famous drama. It seems like this shinsa was the filming location. The shinsa was full of Japanese. Many of them came to pray and meditate. It looked good that elders and youngs visited for their pray. The flowers at the shinsa were blooming, so now migut be a real good time to go visit.

A popular shrine in Shizuoka, it is a respectful shrine, you can feel the peaceful of the place and a view of the sea is also nice. There are two ways how to reach this shrine, by ropeway or by car. I love this place 😍

The origin of Toshogu Shrine where the body of Tokugawa Ieyasu was buried.
JACK SHEPHERD — Google review
quite like it here - it's quiet and calm, then was able to walk around with a peaceful mind and enjoy the environment. but i went there at a late time so some entrance to the temple was already blocked, i was only able to look at it from outside. but it's beautifully built. the stairs were quite large and high, so had to walk carefully especially for elderly. i spent around an hour here but i think when it's in operation hour like around noon? when all the temples are open and welcome for worshipping, it'd be good to spend more time here to refresh and relax both body and soul here.
Giami Lee — Google review
Should be top of the list when visiting Shizuoka! Tokugawa Ieyasu is a big deal in Japan, and it’s awesome to learn about his origins in the Shizuoka area, visit his tomb, and see his personal collection of items in the museum. This is the original Toshogu shrine where Ieyasu’s body is buried. The Nikko one was built later. We had a special tour to go inside the main hall which was amazing.

My photo is actually +10 years ago when there was no googlemaps. Very few tourist tha time. Riding the ropeway was amazing.

Iconic shrine celebrating the shogun that unified Japan and his s final resting place.
Dale Jeffries — Google review
A shrine of significant historical importance which is well worth visiting if you are already at Nihondaira. If you take the ropeway, it'll only take about 5 minutes each way. There is a car that comes every 15 minutes. If you came here by car, be wary of the bus timetables.
Johnny Lam — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit to this shrine. It was very moving to be able to explore it and see the grave of Tokugawa.
We took the rope way from Nihondaira and then walked down to the coast afterward.
While i was there, there was a ceremony going on in the main temple for a newborn baby which was very interesting and educational for me to witness.
We also went into the museum which was incredible. They have many personal items that belonged to Tokugawa and his descendants along with the armor worn by many individuals of his family line and swords that were used by them as well. It was very cool to see them and left a very strong impression.
There are also some amazing views of the town and coast below the shrine.
I highly recommend coming here if you have the opportunity.

中込農園is one of the best farms in Japan. I really enjoyed staying there. The farm have wide variety of fruits in premium quality including peach, apple, grape, nectarine, cherry, pear, persimmon and plum. Honestly the fruits are the best I've ever try in my life. Besides, the hospitality of Kazu san and his staffs makes the experience even better. It is especially suitable for family or friends gathering. The price of fruit picking is reasonable and there are plenty of car parking space. After fruit picking, it is always nice to take a walk in the downtown Yamanashi. I'm sure you will like it!

I love Nakagomi Orchard. At the end of July, my family and friends went there to pick the peaches. This is my first time to visit the peach orchard. There are so many peach trees, we can climb up the ladder to pick the top/good one which faces the sun that Cham told us. She also let us taste the golden peaches too. All the peaches were very delicious and juicy.
Thank you Cham!

Would not visit this place again. Totally dissapointed with the service. we reached early around 1300 (our appointment is 1330) and we were at the right place but there is nobody to receive us. Thus, we thought we were at the wrong location as there is no parking lots at the specified location. we ended up going round and round for an HOUR to find the location. In the end, we called the host and found out that the fruit picking session is cancelled due to the rain. (We did not call earlier because we are unable to stop the car on one side and there was no parking lots) But on their website, they indicated that they will not cancel (unless it is a heavy storm) as their fruit picking farms are sheltered. It was raining on that day but clearly it is not a heavy storm. I understand that they have the rights to cancel the session last minute but it would be great if they can at least drop us a call or an email notifying us of the cancellation. Because of this, we wasted one whole day worth of time and money just to make plans to go to the farm (including car rental). Totally very disappointing. Definitely would not visit this farm again.

Staff is very kind, friendly and also can speak in English. Looking forward to next visit.

If it is in season, this is a great place to go for fruit picking.
We went for peaches on July 4th. Being the middle of the week, we did not need reservations. On the weekends, I would not think of it without a reservation.
The people there are friendly. For the peaches, it was like most every other orchard I've been to. Either pick the fruit from the trees, or they have some in cooler.
They speak English, so it is very foreigner friendly.
Convenient enough to get to, but far out of the way at the same time.
Can't wait for the grapes to come in!

The host and family are very friendly and hope I will have chance to go back again. Missing Yoko San nice home cooked dinner.

I did my 1st volunteering farm work for about 10 days in Nakagomi Orchard. The farm works I did were fruits picking, weeding, trimming, packing, and putting down the silver sheet. Human efforts are much needed to produce high quality fruits. Kazusan talked about the farming knowledge as he was guiding me to do the farm work. I tried many sweet and juicy peaches during my stay! Besides, Yokosan cooked delicious dinner for the volunteers! The staffs in the orchard are friendly and willing to chat! A big thanks to Takasan, Marysan, Kennichisan, Kensan, Kazusan and Yokosan! I'm appreciated that I was given a chance to experience my very first farming in Nakagomi Orchard!
WAI HOO KONG — Google review
This is really a great place! They have multiple locations with different fruits. I went here for the grape picking and eating. It was about ¥2,000 for two hours of all you can eat grapes. That’s more than enough time to fill yourself up. They were so good! I ate about three bunches. They seat you at a table and give you scissors for cutting, gloves and a plate to put your grapes on. It’s very popular so I recommend going early in the season because if you want to take some home, you can’t if you go at the end of the season. As an aside it’s cheaper to go there in person and pay, reserving it on Jaran is more expensive.

There are many different kinds of fruit for picking from June to November. I visited Nakagomi Orchard in August 2019 for peach and grapes picking. Their fruit are so wonderful and delicious. It was really an enjoyable experience to enjoy such high quality of fruit at Nakagomi Orchard. Fresh air, friendly staffs of the orchard and beautiful fresh fruit on the trees that I will come back again for sure.

Shimizu Fish Market is a fantastic place in Shizuoka Prefecture where you can find a variety of fresh seafood. The market is housed in one building, with an upstairs area for grilling your own seafood at a BBQ restaurant. You can enjoy eel on a stick, squid on a stick, or fresh raw oysters prepared right in front of you. The friendly staff and cleanliness add to the experience.
Fantastic place selling fresh seafood in one building with a grill your own seafood bbq restaurant upstairs. You can try the eel on a stick, squid on a stick, or fresh raw oysters. You pick they shuck it right in front of you. Dont choose the big ones. Very nice people and was very clean. In the next building over is all restaurants serving... yep seafood. The set menus of sashimi n tuna collar were amazing. I tried 3 different restaurants there. All so cheap like $20 us bucks per person.

If you want to get great seafood for a fraction of the price and super fresh definitely check out Shimizu fish market. While it’s not massive it has pretty much what we were looking for.
There are 2 floors but the second floor was mostly closed. We went to まぐろ大国 located on the first floor and it was so worth it. Since it’s close to the station it was really easy to walk to! It was a weekday so it was empty and we could choose where we wanted!
Very underrated place!

Many local goods and several shops of interest in this big shopping mall. My family and I went on the Ferris Wheel, which was managed well and we even bought the photo after we finished the ride. The highlight of the visit was the kaiten sushi restaurant. It was kind of small, but the fish was incredibly delicious. My wife wanted to have sushi in this port town, and we didn't regret our decision. Great service at every location and a place I will return to whenever I can. The clouds can be fickle, but unless it's a grey day out, have patience and it might just pay off!! Miho no Matsubara (三保の松原, Pinery of Miho, Pine grove at Miho) is a scenic area on the Miho Peninsula in Shimizu Ward of Shizuoka City, Japan. Its seven-kilometre seashore is lined with pine trees. It is the location of the legend upon which the Noh drama Hagoromo is based; on the second Saturday and Sunday of October, the city of Shizuoka holds a Hagoromo Festival and a performance of the Noh drama takes place near the pine tree of the legend.

The pine Grove is really a board walk to the beach. The beach is black volcanic gravel. The view of Mt Fuji didn't disappoint. Not all the cafes were open so there was no option for black tea and sandwiches or cake.

Miho no Matsubara is a breathtakingly beautiful destination in Japan that exceeded all my expectations. Located in Shizuoka Prefecture, near the iconic Mount Fuji, it offers a unique and magical experience for nature lovers.
Upon arrival, I was immediately captivated by the majestic views of endless pine trees, stretching along a mesmerizing coastline. The sweeping landscape had an ethereal quality, which made me feel like I had stepped into a pristine painting.
Walking along the sandy beach, I couldn't help but marvel at the awe-inspiring waves crashing against the rocks. The rhythmic sounds coupled with the fresh salty air provided a serene and calming experience. It was incredibly therapeutic to simply sit by the shore and observe the power and beauty of nature

I must vist place in Shizuoka. Go in winter and also don't be disappointed if you can't see Fuji. Wait for a while the weather is really fickel around mount Fuji so you never know it might clear in a couple of hours

It very nice place to see Fuji mountain but make sure to plan a full day for this trip if you plan to take a photo of the mountain. It was not visible when we arrived at 9am and only by 4pm we could see something. There are plenty of things to do around and nice sashimi places

A very good place to visit for those who love beautiful scenery.
I recommend you to visit on a sunny day when Mount Fuji will not be hidden by the clouds and you will able to enjoy a perfect scenery of Japan.

My 4th visit to the Miho-no-Matsubara was back in January 2021. My 5th visit was in April 2023 where I visited the entire coastline from the pine grove all the way to the northern tip where we can also see the Miho Lighthouse. Along the entire coastline, you can catch many views of Mt. Fuji with different compositions. Even if the weather is cloudy, be patient as the offshore winds blow the clouds making Mt. Fuji visible throughout the day. Naturally, a clear day during winter is the best chance to catch clear views of Mt. Fuji. In addition, the walking trails extending all the way from the lighthouse to the the pine grove is very nice and relaxing. The nearby parking lot behind the visitor's center is free. For an even more immersive experience, I've detailed each photo location with helpful Google Maps links, along with fascinating historical information and references for further exploration over at the Pix4Japan blog post dedicated to Miho-no-Matsubara.

This is the beach for you if you are one of those who needs privacy to enjoy your beach time.
Yes you got it right, this beach has pine trees forest lined up on one side and as it should be water on the other.
Being a high tide time, the waves kept approaching the shore and we had the best time of the little beach experience that we have.
Access is no issue for this place. We visited it from Yokohama and there is this one long road along the ocean side all the way through odawara.
Visit this on a clear sky day and get a view of the one and only Mt. Fuji. Unfortunately for us it was cloudy and we could only get a momentary glimpse of it.
Enjoy your beach time. Fully recommended. I will visit again, for sure!!!

The Yamanashi Prefecture Archaeological Museum exhibits an array of extraordinary historical artifacts and remarkable antiquities. It showcases a multitude of captivating objects from the past, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history of the region. The museum houses an impressive collection of unique and unparalleled archaeological treasures, displaying them in a visually appealing manner. It is an excellent destination for those seeking to explore the wonders of ancient civilizations and immerse themselves in the cultural heritage of Yamanashi Prefecture.
Absolutely amazing!! A must visit location for Yamanashi if you are interested in history or archaeology. I had an amazing visit.
The museum takes you through all periods of time in the local area, starting from prehistoric. An extensive collection of Jōmon pottery, which was fascinating to see. A lot of the items are in such good condition too it was impressive. There was also a large section on the Kōfun period, which was by far my favourite as it is so different to anything I could think of in Western culture.
There a discount days for students (approximately once a month), and also discounts for tourists who are visiting Yamanashi.
Staff were kind and helpful, even though I only speak very limited Japanese. I even got the opportunity to ask a museum curator questions about one of the exhibits for my university essay.
Many thanks for your hospitality and for a great day out! 😊

Parking is free at the park, and visitors from outside the prefecture can get a discount on admission if they prove they are staying in Yamanashi Prefecture. It's quite cheap even without discounts.
The main exhibits are items excavated from within the prefecture from the Paleolithic period to the Yayoi period. Although the scale of the exhibition space cannot match that of the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno, Tokyo, it is surprising that so many things have been unearthed within Yamanashi Prefecture. It's also right in front of the Kofu Minami Interchange, so it's the perfect spot to end your road trip in the Yamanashi area.

The parking lot is spacious and free.
I also use the internet, so it's easy to access.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are also special exhibitions, which I visited to see.
Although the admission fee was low, there were many exhibits that were worth seeing.
The special exhibition has a lot of Jomon-style pottery, and many of them are shaped, so I think even first-time visitors will enjoy reading the explanations.
I took my time to look at the permanent exhibition and special exhibition, but it took about 2 and a half hours because there were so many exhibits.
Many of the exhibits were shaped, so it was fun to see the patterns on the pottery.
It's indoors, so it's perfect for visiting during the hot summer!
By the way, the outside is a park, so there are lots of big trees, paths for walking, and benches.
Last time I came here in autumn, the autumn leaves were very beautiful.
During the cooler months, it's nice to see the keyhole-shaped tumulus in the park.
At the museum shop, I liked the miniature clay figurine gacha-gacha that was reproduced using a 3D printer.
Well done!
The pamphlet ㇳ?! is also sold for 1900 yen, which I thought was cheap considering the contents.
The shop has a bit of a nostalgic feel to it, but I personally like it.
The sound of cicadas echoed through the parking lot.
There were quite a few people who came with their children and parents who brought bug nets with them.
It's a perfect place for summer vacation homework and is recommended.

The Toi Gold Mine, a centuries-old historic site, offers an exciting adventure for families with children. Although the journey to reach this landmark may be long, it is worth visiting. Visitors can explore tunnels and participate in panning experiences while admiring a vast gold nugget. Additionally, the well-maintained garden and museum within the mine provide interesting English explanations about its history. Most thrillingly, visitors can also pan for their own gold during their visit!
Very interesting, historical and relaxing walk through an old mine. English language on most info signs. Takes about 45 minutes to walk through the mine, and about 45 minutes for the "panning for gold" activity. Tiny gold pieces can be found fairly easily. The park is fun for kids and adults. If you're already in the area, then it's worth the visit.

In May 2022. We had a car to reach the gold mine, so it was convenient. Reaching it by bus might be more complicated as there are a few.
The entry fee was 1000 jpy per person, a bit more if you want to do the gold activity (which seems famous to the kids).
It was interesting, but the visit was quite short. I wouldn't recommend going unless you are in the vicinity.

Interesting place to visit, one can understand the gold mining history of Japan from here.
The tunnels created for gold mining is kept and maintained for the visitors to walk around and see.
Through out the tunnel models are displayed explaining the life of miners.
There is a nice museum near, highlights are 12kg and 250kg gold. Visitors can touch and lift it(if you are strong enough).
Another attraction is the gold panning, at an extra cost we can try out luck in gold panning at the area provided near the gift shop.

It is located in a rural area called Toi in the west Izu area. This place has historic importance of once being the second most productive gold mine in Japan. The tour preserves the history of mining and difficulties involved for the labourer working under the ground which had been subjected to extreme conditions of seepage of hot springs and hot lack of oxygen. The story is told with the help of mechanically animated models. They also have a gold panning experience which allows you to pan as much of gold as you want in 30 mins.

"mining" gold is kind of a bit too short. They also use fake flowers for their "gods". It's very interesting to hold the world's biggest gold bar. 1000yen for the golden ice cream. Please buy from the grandma who is selling her handmade crafts within the Toi Gold Mine.

It’s quite a journey to get there, but good fun for kids. There’s a large, well-maintained garden, interesting museum in the original mine (with English explanations) and a chance to pan for your own gold.

Happy Traveller (*.*) — Google review
Numazu Port's View-O Flood Gate provides spectacular day and night views of Numazu City, Shizuoka, Mount Fuji and bodies of water that surround three of four directions. In the day, it is said that you can see Mount Fuji on a clear day. In the night, you are greeted by its luminous colours that light the observation deck and towers that support/move the flood gate, making it a sight in itself of the night.
Unfortunately, I was only able to visit during the night and catch the views during that time. However, with the December night that it was, not being cold on the outside and being warm inside the observation deck, it made for a nice, quiet overlook of the city interior and a hint of Mount Fuji resting behind a partly-cloudy night.
For 100円, you can get many nice photo opportunities up on the observation deck. Even at night, the lights-off interior and mainly-exterior lighting creates a relaxing... and, to some, romantic... ambience/aesthetic.
It's a must-visit during all seasons. Visitors to Numazu should make it a point to stop here and go through both sides of the port's inlet to discover what each side has to offer.

Splendid view of the sea and the town. Although on the day I went there, we couldn't see Mountain Fuji, the place was overall relaxing and there weren't that many people there. The price to get up to the observatory wasn't expensive. The wind was super strong, so if you go there on a specially windy day, be careful not to get anything blown away. The view of the view-o was beautiful looking from outside as well, since the sun was at just the right position, haha. If you're going on a hunt for a Love Live stamp, they have one here!

It looks like the ``14th Minato Oasis Sea-Class Gourmet in Numazu'' will finally be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 29th and 30th.👍 Due to the coronavirus, the event has been undecided and has been delayed for a long time, but it feels like my long-awaited dream has finally come true. Is not it. I'm sure he'll be a great resource. I'm also thinking of adjusting my schedule and going somehow. Are you all going out? I’m looking forward to it~(^^)
At Minato Shinsenkokan, you can find tuna sashimi, etc. Dried fish are often bought outside at stores in shopping streets. I always buy horse mackerel, mackerel, and dried soy sauce mirin from Yondaime Yahei, which I will introduce in a separate article next time. Also, the souvenir that I always buy at Minato Shinsenkokan is ``Mekabut Tororo'', which I have also uploaded in the photo👍In the Showa era, it was sold at stores, but recently it has become more difficult to buy it. . “Ajiya” is the only one that sells it at Numazu Port. It's great for everyday cooking and miso soup (^^) Everyone, please try it at least once.

The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium is a worthwhile destination for admirers of deep sea creatures. It features tanks containing a variety of well-maintained deep and shallow sea fishes, as well as invertebrates. The most notable exhibits include the dark room viewing of luminescent fishes from the deep sea and preserved specimens that come in blue and red colors, with hard bones stained red while soft ones are stained blue.
A must-visit in Numazu, likely one of the surprisingly best aquariums I’ve visited ever. We visited two hours before close on a weekday and there was a steady flow of visitors but it wasn’t too crowded at all. Compared to the chaos of the Osaka Aquarium that I visited last month, this was a much nicer experience.
Every tank is set up with so much care, and there is lots of information about the fishes. If you don’t know Japanese you’ll have to translate but it was no problem! My favorite exhibit was the isopod and ancient fish.

The exhibition at this aquarium was very nice. However, there are two problems. One is that the only payment method is cash. The second is that the staff's response is not good. The staff at the admission ticket office responded according to the manual, and the five-member family customer in front of me pitifully stopped admission and went home. The staff who guides you at the entrance cannot guide you smoothly. As a result, the passage before going to the back of the building became a large line, and many people complained. The end of the large line was very empty. I was disappointed. The inside of the aquarium was vacant and comfortable, unlike the area near the entrance. The exhibition of deep-sea fish was also devised. It was fun to watch.

THE COOLEST AQUARIUM I HAVE EVER VISITED! I like aquariums and museums. And this place has got great mix of both. They have very interesting deep sea creatures that you don’t find in regular aquariums and great ways of showing them. And the highlight of this place is their coelacanth museum! I don’t know anywhere else that you can see frozen coelacanths or a fish print of it. It was so cool. If you like aquariums or deep sea, this is a must visit place.

A great petit deep sea aquarium worth to visit. Tanks containing deep and shallow sea fishes as well as invertebrates are maintained very well. My highlights are dark room viewing of deep sea luminescent fishes and beautifully preserved fishes that come in blue and red. It says hard bones are stained red and soft ones by blue. They not just attached scientific interest but are really piece of art!
I would say relatively high admission of 1,600 pays considering its quality. Enjoy!

Fantastic little aquarium. Lots of Japanese tourists but almost no foreign tourists at all. It has the most extensive coelacanth exhibit and a wide variety of deep sea animals. Entrance fee is 1600 yen per adult. Queue can be a little long because the start of the exhibit requires you to queue up but the line moves quickly as people are very polite. A must go if you are in Suruga bay. Lots of restaurants around after you are done. Keep your ticket as sometimes the restaurants offer discounts when you show the ticket.
Arnold Arkar Moore — Google review
Very wonderful place to visit! You may spend 60-90 mins or more if you like. Opened in 2012 and getting popular once NHK, national broadcasting, released the video that captured gigantic squid alive in the deep sea.
Top features: 1) Coelacanths (both frozen and stuffing): Very rare in Japan due to strict trading rules these days. Those are imported before the regulations were effective.
2) Bathynomus giganteus
3) Fresh local deep sea creatures (Suruga bay is the deepest bay in Japan.)
One staff answered my questions so sincerely and in details. So nice! It seemed staffs are proud of and enjoy working there. They are effectively displaying all creatures, and hold some presentations (Japanese only by staffs).
Overall, kids must love this place and even some adults can enjoy a lot surely. Highly recommended place to visit! Note that weekends are so crowded. Go in the morning or weekdays. ;) Enjoy!

It is a cute small aquarium, roughly would take 1.5 hours and 2 hours if you are really into learning deep sea. Beside the deep sea, they also some shallow reef organisms. The route is clear, tanks are diverse with clear Japanese and English explanation. They are keeping flapjack octopus and seems doing a good job on extending the cultivate period. The best part will be the collection of Coelacanth specimen, they are exhibit a dry one and two frozen.

Jōren Falls, a picturesque location along the Kano River, features an enchanting 25-meter waterfall that cascades into a pool. This natural wonder is steeped in folklore and boasts stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can park their cars in the lot and take a lengthy staircase to reach the base of the falls, where they can witness wasabi cultivation that takes advantage of the area's pristine water sources. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate access to a nearby pond service on the river.
It was a very beautiful waterfall. I parked my car in the parking lot. A waterfall can be seen far below the parking lot. Take a long, long staircase to the waterfall. When I got down to the bottom, wasabi, a special product of Izu, was cultivated. It is agriculture that makes use of clean water. There was a fishing pond service on the river, and many people enjoyed fishing. There is a beautiful waterfall in front of you, and you can feel the negative ions throughout your body. On the way back, you have to go up the long long stairs. I am very tired. However, it is worth going to the bottom to see the waterfall.

The photos don't do it justice, it was more spectacular than I thought, especially in the rain. The surprising bonus was the small wasabi farm also in the gorge, so you can see the waterfall and get your wasabi hit (including buying fresh wasabi) in the same place.
There are about 200 steps and no wheelchair accessibility. No toilets in the gorge either.

This was a really beautiful spot to come and relax and take a short break away from Tokyo. It seems they created an irrigation system using the waterfall to continuously water all the wasabi plants, so the sound of all the water rushing through us really relaxing. They offer fishing and even sell some wasabi ice cream (it’s just vanilla ice cream with some wasabi on top. Be careful it’s super spicy haha we got heartburn after eating it and walking up all the steps). Definitely recommend it as a quick stop to anyone passing through Shizuoka, especially for the first time.

Japan is well known for its beautiful waterfalls, and Joren Falls is exceptional. What makes it interesting is there is a wasabi farm next to the falls.. (so you can actually see how wasabi is grown). Also interesting is that you can go trout fishing from the river (for a fee). It’s well paved with wide steps which are steep, so the return back to the car park could be daunting. Free parking is available. Also on site is a souvenir shop that sells fresh wasabi and snacks.

One of the countless hidden wonders of the area. If you are ever in Shizuoka, you can't leave without going through this mini jungle view that has a waterfall as a bonus. The most impressive to me is seeing the wasabi grow in the surreal clean water.
Kawazu Seven Waterfalls is a picturesque destination consisting of a series of seven waterfalls, varying in height from two meters to thirty meters. The falls are located along a roughly one-kilometer forest walking trail, which offers visitors the opportunity to explore each unique waterfall. The area provides a refreshing escape during hot summer days and can be conveniently accessed by bus.
Its totally worth making a stop here. Not too crowded normally and there are some souvenirshops around too. Right when you come down the free parking lot you will even find a shop that sells only wasabirelated stuff!
Note that its quite some stairs up if you want to see all the waterfalls.

Lovely park and totally worth the visit. Free parking in a big lot a couple minutes away by foot. Free entrance. Although there are barriers along the path and you can't get as close to all the falls as you'd like, this is a great area for a walk in nature to see falls that are completely different from one another.

Beautiful site. To see the 7 waterfalls you'll need to take quite a hike and the long stairs in the mountain can be a challenge for some but it's totally worth it. As a treat, after the walk on the mountain path you can enjoy the hot springs at the last waterfall. 7 different baths which are all at different temperatures. We went in February and it was still quite cold outside but the baths were still fantastic!

Beautiful river gorge. Highly recommended. Easy hike, but over 400 stairs to reach the seventh waterfall. Only the 4th waterfall, Shokei-daru is handicap accessible. Don’t miss the 1st and 2nd which are actually located before the regular trail starts. There is a free parking lot, so don’t pay if you don’t have to. Enjoy a ice cream or snack at the small store near the start of the trail.

This is a beautiful nature area with walks along a stream with clear mountain water. Many of the falls are along the trail that is stroller and wheelchair accessible. Others are up a long staircase. There are restaurants and restrooms along parts of the path.

Really enjoy this place. Literally cool to visit during hot summer days. Easy ~2km hike to see all 7 falls, each unique, though I wonder what’s the minimum height of a waterfall here 🤔
If arriving by bus, get off at Mizutari (水垂) stop instead of the Kawazunanataki stop, so that you can start from first fall (猿田淵) upstream, and walk downstream to cover all 7 falls, instead of having to walk upstream then round trip back down.
Another tip, if traveling by bus, is to get the 2 day bus pass at one of the local train stations. Cover all buses between Shuzenji and Kawazu stations for 2400 yen.
Ps. got these tips from the very helpful tourist info center staff at Shuzenji station.

A nice natural feature, free to access. The Waterfalls are beautiful to see. There is a little bit of walking to see some of them. We did not finish the hike ad part way has a lot of stairs up and we were in a timer.
The area is a little built up with some businesses and locals but not to bad and allows for a nice path. You are not in the depths of a forest walking dirt paths.
But definatly worth visiting if you enjoy nature. If you not overly fit it's not to hard to reach some of them.

Such a perfect beautiful place to be. Hiking along the amazing 7 waterfalls and the forest is so refreshing. This place is worth a visit, it's peaceful here and the sound of the water relaxes the mind and heart. I suggest to bring a hand towel, extra tshirt and drink with you when you come, and also take a restroom first coz there is no restroom along the path. The pathways are well constructed but be prepared for the high and long stairways. This place is breathtaking..nature indeed is home. Will come here again for sure. One of the best hiking experience with nature.
Joy Inocencio — Google review
Free parking is available at the beginning or the end of the self-guided tour. The trail is marked clearly if you start from the beginning.
It takes about an hour from waterfall #1 to #7, possibly a bit longer if you linger at the wishing stones, pay tribute to the Seven God statues or take photos. Maybe even enjoy a swim in the crystal blue water.
Most of the trail is paved with some steep steps which are manageable. In total it was almost a 2km hike just for the waterfalls (that’s round trip). The trail head continues with 3 more stops if you want to continue hiking in the area.
Annie Sobol — Google review
Nice walk for about 1-2 hours in one direction along the waterfalls, with easy difficulty.
There’s also a bus that brings you up and/or down.
You can collect stamps along the way - one per waterfall.

Izu Panorama Park is a picturesque mountain park that offers stunning views of Mt. Fuji from its cable car, viewing terrace, and restaurant. In addition to this, the area boasts various attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage site Nirayama Reverbatory Furnaces, Mishima Skywalk - Japan's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, and the beautiful Kawazuzakura cherry trees.
The only way to go to the top is by cable car. Since the weather is good we saw the whole beauty of Mt. Fuji. There is also coffee shop and restaurant, you can have your food while enjoying the scenery.

Stunning views from the top! There's also a café and restaurant at the top so you can have a meal/drink whilst enjoying the scenery.
Ropeway is too expensive, but you can get a decent discount if you book online at least a day earlier. Online tickets are valid for 3 months so you can pick a day with good weather.

It's absolutely worth going, what a fantastic discovery. Probably the best view point for Mt. Fuji. Cable car feels very steady even on a windy day.
Riccardo Cena — Google review
Wonderful place but it felt a bit overrated to me. If your sole purpose is to see mount Fuji, then you can try other close view points like Fuji Yoshida. The rope way is worth a ride though. It's probably the longest and the steepest I've ever ridden.
Farhan Shadique Arronno — Google review
Worth every dollar, every minute of your life making your trip down to enjoy the view of MT Fuji and much more. One feature I like, was there’s a “Live” camera that shows Mt Fuji if it’s blocked by cloud- helping you to make better decisions in terms of taking the cable ride
Ojisan ?Hiroshi? — Google review
It is another very beautiful view point of Fuji. Take the cable car to see Fuji on the mountain 🏔️. You will see the view of Fujisan with the sea. Another thing I really like is the delicious ice cream 🍦. There are many photo angles. Walking and enjoying the scenery can only be continued by soaking your feet in the onsen. Happy 😊

Amazing view of Fuji. Tasty ice cream at a decent price! Was quiet when we went on a Friday afternoon.

Pretty place! Food is average but the view is amazing! Gondola is quite pricey (2400 yen)

Approximately 7 min ride on the Ropeway. The view was great but could have been better if clouds did not cover Mt Fuji when view from that direction. Enjoyed the view, fresh air and the raspberry ice-cream with the crunchy cone!

Great sky trolley ride and the view from the top would have been amazing if the clouds didn't obscure Mt. Fuji. Great snacks and coffee at the top with shopping at the base. Worth the visit to see Fuji.

Gorgeous view. About 2000yen round trip on the cable cars (if you pay via credit card, always choose to pay in yen!) Take number 13 bus which is right outside Izunagaoka station, the stop is at the city center right before the onsen stop then walk for 8 minutes. Bus drivers speak minimum English; best if you show Google pictures for confirmation. There are also taxi outside the station. There are restaurants at the top of the park. We didnt see Mt Fuji as it was rainy but still worth it.

A must do in izu. Terrific views of Fuji. Go early and you will get in quickly—no waiting! Tour busses come then the line is much longer.

Awesome views of Mount Fuji!
You can go up the cable car to the park for about 2,500 yen.
Up there is a coffee shop and udon restaurant and other neat things to buy. We went to the udon place and it was pretty good ( 1,100 to 1,300 yen).
If you are into hiking, there are also trails, playgrounds and shrines that you can check out.
Overall great place to spend an afternoon.

Worth the visit eventhough didnt manage to see Mt Fuji in all its glory cos it was covered in clouds. There is a shrine, playground, cafe and various walking path and viewing points from Panorama park. They have discount coupons for shops and eateries on top the mountain and at its base. Cable ride was fun with view of the city below and mountains in the background.

I just use google map to checkout nearby popular sightseeing spot and found this place and was not disappointed.
We the park isn’t very big but very comfortable. We were lucky to have a clear Mount Fuji that day. The restaurant there was okay (the taste is fine just don’t expect something very surprising) but you can eat with a Mount Fuji view.
There is free car park at the cable car station. The souvenir shop sells general stuff and a bit pricey (but if are not going to any other sightseeing spot, just buy it there)

Visitors can indulge in a shopping spree at renowned outlets like Gucci, Burberry, Celine, and Alexander Wang. Afterward, they can enjoy a delectable sushi and tempura lunch at Numazu Uogashizushi or savor coffee and pastries at Fauchon Paris.

The place was huge and spacious. At first, the map looks difficult to figure out, but you'll be able to get through it. It doesn't have huge discounts (if you're looking for one) like I experienced from other outlets but the variety of products are endless. Salute to the guy (Ono) at Nike shop. He's so kind to help me find my size and shoes that fit me. His English is excellent. Thank you, sir. 😊

A huge premium outlet where you can find really good prices on new items from whatever brand you name. The view is also amazing, facing the mountains including Mount Fuji. This outlet is also equipped with many food stalls, playgrounds for children, toilets, and lots of benches to rest. Don't forget to bring your passport to get more discount.

More than 300 shops, most popular brands are here. Prices are good and tempting.
My daughter spent 3 hrs shopping till (my hand) tired (signing cards).
Since it’s not peak holiday season and not Jan & July Sales, not very crowded. Therefore, it’s a more enjoyable shopping experience.
For those who did not bring large enough luggage, can buy 1 from Ace Hokkaido suitcase store.
Worth coming back to do more shopping.
The bonus: you can get a good view of Mt Fuji.

Big outlet where one can easily spend hours shopping ! Some offers are worth buying. The Hill Side food outlets have good selection and with a very nice view of Mt Fuji. The food court at the east end is older and offer not so good environment. The Japanese udon is good though. However, the Singapore chicken rice is the worst I have ever tasted. The rice is white rice, comes with coleslaw and the chicken is sliced into fillet size.

This place is impressively huge and one of the best tax free shopping experiences I've had.
There are several zones and plenty of food options available, so you can choose to spend an entire day here. I spent about 1.5 hours and it's seriously too short. I would recommend 3-4 hours for shopping alone, and perhaps 5-6 if wish to factor in meal time and perhaps factor in entertainment for the kids.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how well thought the outdoor mall is, with impressive playground and a mini theme park to keep younger children engaged.
This is my first trip, but I'll definitely return again for at least 4-6 hours in the near future.

Came to this premium outlet in hopes of catching a stunning view of Mount Fuji, following our drive to Lake Kawaguchiko. However, luck wasn't in our favor as thick clouds veiled the majestic peak, leaving us unable to behold its beauty. So if you come here for the Mt Fuji, you may consider check the weather first.
Additionally, during our visit in mid-February, we observed that many shops in the outlet appeared to be experiencing slow sales.

Lake ashi is absolutely beautiful! We arrived to togendai after a short bus ride from our hotel. There at the base, lake ashi had the lovely pirate ships coming back into port. Shout out to the Evangelion characters everywhere & the cool human sized figure in the station! Definitely a fan favorite, fun fact the anime is set in Hakone and lake ashi & Owakudani appear in the series 👏🏼
After a short walk enjoying the water front we caught the Hakone Ropeway for a scenic ride up the mountain side, it was Picturesque to say the least. As we got higher in elevation we could see Mt. Fuji with it's donut cloud hats lol As well as plumes of white smoke emerging and bursting out from the area up ahead. When you arrive at the top of Owakudani if your an egg fan you must try the "Kuro-Tamago" as called by locals, aka black eggs or sulfur eggs. There's a legend about life expectancy around them. Nestled in a picturesque setting, the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, also known as Hakone Garasu no Mori or Hakone Glass Forest, is a delightful museum that focuses on Venetian glassware. It boasts an impressive collection of exquisite glass pieces from various periods, with a special emphasis on those from the Venetian Renaissance.
Absolutely gorgeous! I went with a small group of people and we took some great photos and had a good time walking around the museum. Such a nice museum. We went there when it was raining, and it made the museum more mystical. You can see so many glass collections and art, and of course you can also buy it on souvenir shop. They also have classes to make your own glass art. One unique thing, they have a store selling jams! But one thing to be prepared, there is no train heading to this museum, either you take your own vehicle or you take the bus. Which can be nauseating since it has so many winding roads. For people who easily get carsick, be mentally prepared.
Also, if you're a student, you will get student price to enter this museum. I say that's really great deal. Just tell them you're a student and show your student ID.

Tourist trap. Better described as the Impractical Drinking Vessel Museum. You pay 1800¥ to enter what felt like a shop. So, I'd say it's not worth going unless you have a real love for all things venetian glass or have nothing else to do and a pass that lets you get in for free.
A point of redemption was that the grounds were pretty nice and well kept, and there was a lovely place to sit and watch the creek and trees.

Good for a short visit if you have some time to spend around the area, but I wouldn't recommend going out of the way to visit it. It was quite quiet when we were there. The place was quite small, so we completed our round within an hour. The experience workshops require prior reservations, so we didn't try those. Overall, a nice place for some photo taking~

This is Japan’s first art museum specializing in Venetian glass, and exhibits works from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries and also modern pieces. The pond on the grounds is in between the Venetian Glass Museum and the Modern Glass Museum where you can appreciate delicate glass crafts at each respective museum. Its medieval Venice-inspired garden also has spots where you can take photos. Listen carefully to the live canzone (Italian song) performances held every day while gazing at the scenery from the café restaurant on the grounds and you’re sure to find yourself feeling elegant. They also hold glasswork workshops, making this a spot you can enjoy all day long.

Beautiful place! I suggest you visit this place during a sunny afternoon, when the glass beads shine the brightest! It is also pretty at night, but I found the afternoon option do be more beautiful. It IS a museum and has tons of glass artifacts (I am no glass enthusiast, so I didn’t find it any more interesting). However, the artifacts were very unique and pretty. There’s also a shop, which is quite expensive, considering a glass bracelet for around $500! Overall, a great place to go in Hakone!

Owakudani, also known as Hell Valley, is a geothermic site in Hakone that offers stunning views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding area. Visitors can take the Hakone Tozan Railway or local buses from Hakone-Yumoto Station to reach this forested and mountainous area. One of the main attractions here is the opportunity to eat black eggs boiled in hot springs, which are said to add seven years to your life for each egg consumed.
Beautiful area with many touristy shops and a museum detailing the local geology which is very fascinating (tix: 100 yen)! There is a nature trail connected to the main complex that requires reservations that provides a look at the local wildlife. Make sure to try the black eggs while you are here as they are delicious!

Black eggs! This oozing, green scar was caused by an eruption thousands of years ago and then there was a horrible mud slide that killed many people 100 years ago. Now they are working really hard to terrace the place. It truly feels like another planet and it smells like hell. I recall a time when you could walk out further to see where they cook the eggs but it’s all blocked off now. I suppose there may have been people who got sick from the noxious gas. I wish more areas were accessible for exploration. Still, I understand that is probably not safe. The ropeway is a great experience especially on a sunny day. We were lucky to catch it at a nice time in February. Looking forward to visiting again whenever we have a chance. Thanks for all the delicious hard boiled eggs over the years 🙏🎉😄

In the Owakudani area near the Hakone volcano there are places where hot smoke comes out of the ground (it's not a geyser) the smell of sulfur which scorches the ground in a yellow color. View of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fujiyama in Japan. It is amazing, don't miss the cable car ride, boating on the lake and visiting the open museum. It is said that the Japanese cook eggs in the hot springs which gives them a black color. A belief holds that eating one egg adds 7 years to life. The place also has a restaurant and sells ice cream, which is also black in color.

Beautiful place to visit.
The peak is about 1044 meter high and you can see the inactive volcanoes and smokes coming out from the volcano.
However the smoke is very stingy because of its sulphuric property.
You have to take a Cable car in order to get to the top.
One of the most famous food is Black Egg or 黒卵.
The rumor about the black egg is that if you have one black egg then your life expectancy will increase to extra 7 years.
Its really very interesting rumor that almost 95% tourists buy Black eggs.
Really must visit once.

Easy to find, lovely atmosphere (not counting the dreadful smell of sulphur of course😆) . The ride on the gondola was nice and provided a lovely view on approaching the lake. The weather tho obscured Mt. Fuji ☹️
I liked that I could buy a one way or return ticket and use it anytime throughout the day. I do think that ¥2250 (return) is a rather pricey ride tho but I guess it's a tourist attraction.
I didn't like that the minimum number of eggs I could purchase was 5 - felt like a waste of resources since I couldn't eat that many and 3 ended up in the trash.
All round nice experience - I recommend it.

This place looks so great especially while you're inside the ropeway where you can actually see the smokes coming from the mountains on a great angle.
Once you go down, you'll see shops selling souvenirs and some black egg that they believe will add more years to your life if you eat it.
We decided not to stay too long due to the sulfur smell coming from the smokes.
It is a place with a breath taking view that's why it's a must visit site when you go to Hakone.

This place is so beautiful, really wish we would have done a little bit more research on things to do especially that you can walk to the area where the eggs are boiled. However, even without doing all this we still wouldn’t have had time to do anything else given that the ropeway closes relatively early. Definitely worth checking out though.

Fantastic experience! You can see the sulfur escaping the ground from the last eruption in 2015. The black eggs are supposed to extend your life by 7 years. And they have all kinds of food to try!
Ashley Johnson — Google review
There's nothing really to see here, it's cool to see the geothermal activity but it's not exactly pretty and the views are mediocre at best. The cable car was awesome though.

Not to be missed if you are in Hakone. You get to smell the sulfur and experience the black eggs and ice cream. Great experience! Highly recommend to book a tour in advance if you are looking for further exploration of the place.

Potentially the single best reason to purchase a Hakone transportation pass. This mountain top has some incredible views of Mt. Fuji and the mine on the back side. It’s accessible by cable car system, and serves a black egg that apparently extends your life - which I had no interest in trying.

Impressive spot!! Must go there while u are in hakone.
Part of the ropeway was under maintenance when we visited, so we laid 2500 yen round trip per person but only took a short ride.
Sky was clear, could see the huge Fuji!
Melisa Woo — Google review
Good place to visit. Bit expensive for cable car like round trip for 2.5 TJPY but still nice place to go. As Pic attached, you can also see the view of Fuji Mountain. In the shop here you can buy black egg and some souvenirs. Not recommend to buy black egg dumpling bread which tastes ... umm bread itself is really dry and rather propose to buy just black tamago

Nestled in the serene natural beauty of Hakone, Japan, the Pola Museum of Art is a modern museum that boasts a unique underground design and offers visitors a forest trail experience. Established in 2002 by the Pola Art Foundation, this museum showcases an impressive private art collection amassed over 40 years by Tsuneshi Suzuki.
It was so incredible to see Monet's paintings in person. The outside area was really nice to walk through as well. It was so surreal to walk through the trees while the music was playing.

Awesome museum at the heart of the forest! Elegant main building surrounded by the park for enjoying nature. Collection is excellent. Especially some of Japanese masterpieces! There is a small cafe in the main building with good coffee and sweets. Recommend!

The local transportation system is well connected to getting there is no problem. An interesting building that is a pleasure to walk through and feel. The permanent collection is impressive. The special exhibition was thoughtful and pulled from a variety of genres to make its point. The outdoor walk was lovely and quiet.

A nice blend of art (including some top-tier names) and nature - with some nice forest walking trails available around the museum area.

A great surprise while we were visiting the Hakone area. The museum is not huge but is not too small either, and the exhibitions were thoughtfully laid out and explained. The museum building is amazing and it integrates with the forest in a beautiful way. A great option to visit if you're in the area

The collection of Impressionist artworks housed within this private museum is truly commendable. The sheer volume and quality of these art pieces exemplify the museum's dedication to preserving and showcasing this significant artistic movement.
Charles Zhu — Google review
Beautifully designed museum nestled in the forest with a surprisingly spectacular gallery of art pieces including surrealist and impressionist classics. We visited during a particularly rainy, windy day and was impressed by the receptionist, who helped us book a taxi back to our hotel (we would not have been able to return given the storm outside).

One of the most amazing museums I’ve ever been to. The building is an experience in itself and it’s surrounded by a beautiful nature path. Getting there is very easy but leaving not so much. I hope I’m able to go back at least once in my life.

Amazing place. The POLA Museum of Art is a little out of the way, but can be reached easily enough by public bus from Gora station. There is a bus you can catch down the road from the Hakone Open Air Sculpture Museum. It's a good combination of doing these two things together in one day. The POLA Museum has artworks from Monet, Gaughan, Van Gogh, Matisse, Cezanne and plenty of other masters. There is a lovely cafe that makes good strong coffee. You can also get tea and cake. The cafe looks out over some lovely forested areas. It may not be known or be as famous as the large art museums, but it is a treasure. Invest some time and go see this calming but also inspiring place.

Lovely exhibit in a sleek, introspective building. A bit abstract for our tastes, but that's irrelevant. We particularly enjoyed the forest walk, which features an extensive network of concealed speakers projecting soothing music as you walk through the trees.

I couldn’t believe how many famous and beautiful paintings there were here. I was so impressed with the quality and beauty of the building as well. It was surrounded by nature and relatively not crowded on the inside as well. I would love to go back again. What a hidden gem.

One of my favorite art museum! Recommend for anyone who interested in Impressionist art era. You will see a lot of beautiful and vivid paintings from all around the world. Also i love the architecture there as well.

Wonderful museum with great impressionist art collection and high-quality temporary exhibitions. The most recent one on contemporary Japanese painting was especially worth a visit.

Beautiful building with a small collection of impressionist paintings. We really enjoyed the special exhibition on Art Deco in France in the 1920s, and the outdoor trail too :) Worth a visit if you’re in the area, have some time to spare, and are looking for a relaxing 1-2h with some impressive art.

Pola Museum of Art ポーラ美術館 is very expensive for what they offer. It is a small museum and there were almost no art pieces outdoors. It was a let down. Go to the Hakone open-air museum instead.

Lovely collections and landscapes. Worth a visit. If you can visit only 2, this is one of them.
1800 for the entrance fee and 500 for the parking. Well worth it.

Superb museum (and that is not trivial give the many excellent museums Japan has on offer) — well curated exhibits that span the range of art history. Also has a nice outdoor walk. A bit out of the way (and thus peaceful and quiet) but there is a direct bus from Gora station.

An enjoyable space and time to spend at. Great architecture the museum itself.
Kuzuryu Shrine is a shrine dedicated to thenine-headed dragon, believed to reside in adjoining Lake Ashi. The beautiful scenery and nice little shrine makes it not well known to the masses, but it is a must see for anyone visiting Hakone.
Great‼️
شينوبي حبيبي — Google review
Originally established in the year 757, the Nine-Headed-Dragon Shrine [Kuzuryu-jinja] reveres a nine-headed dragon. According to ancient legend, the dragon who lived at the bottom of Lake Ashi demanded a human sacrifice from the local villagers. A monk named Mangan Jyonin saved the villagers by subduing the dragon causing it to renounce its evil ways. The dragon became revered as a dragon king, and these days, a festival is held every year on July 31st to celebrate the nine-headed dragon king.

Gora Station is a key transportation hub in Hakone, providing access to popular attractions such as Ashi Lake and Mount Fuji. Visitors can reach Ashi Lake via the Hakone Ropeway or local buses, with accommodation options mainly concentrated on the eastern shore near the ropeway station. On clear days, stunning views of Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from this area.
It is such a beautiful train station in Hakone. The design more like western or Switzerland building than Japanese. Me and family had 3 times visited here and never get bored with everything happened in Hakoke. The fresh air, cleaniness, the people are so nice and very helpful. I will visit again Hakone in the near future. Many places I have not seen during my last visit there.

A nice station that's like the central hub of Hakone. Outside, there are numerous restaurants and other vendors.
At this station, there's the cable car and the train. Though the train itself is pretty slow as it maneuvers through the hillside. It also does something interesting where it stops, reverses and takes another split line. Very interesting indeed.
Otherwise you'll find that overall a pleasant ride.

The Hakone Open-Air Museum, established in 1966, aims to blend nature and art seamlessly. It spans across 77,000 acres of Japanese countryside and showcases an extensive collection from renowned international and local artists such as Miro, Rodin, and Yoshitatsu Yanagihara. The museum features outdoor sculptures by notable artists like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth set against the backdrop of Hakone's lush hills.
Beautiful open air museum set in an incredible mountain backdrop. Lots of awesome sculptures including some interactive ones that kids can play on. There’s also an awesome indoor Picasso exhibit with 300 works (no photos allowed). Quite a bit of walking, so something to keep in mind if you’re differently able, although there are ramps which is good. Worth noting is the gift store - one of the most unique I’ve seen, so bring some spending money for that!

Definitely a must see in the autumn. The beautiful fall colors really make this museum magical. I’m additional to the grounds and various statues and exhibits, there is also a Picasso exhibit. We waited in line for 15-20 minutes in the morning on a weekend, which is not too bad. If you can buy tickets in advance, go for it, but still worth the wait. The grounds are spacious, so we did not feel crowded although it was pretty busy. Love the art!

A really nice place to visit while you're in Hakone. There are a lot of interesting pieces of art and we enjoyed walking around on our last morning in the area. I wouldn't say to go out of your way to visit here, but if you have time and you're nearby, it's worth it. The Picasso gallery was very interesting, I was surprised to see that they had so many original pieces in such a remote museum in Japan.
There are quite a few interactive sections for kids. And there is a lot of English.

Place is vast. We went during August, so it's summer. It was very hot so we have to go around the place quickly. Here you can see different arts and architecture coming from various artist from different parts of the world.
They also showcase some of Picasso's best work together with brief stories about it.
Nice place to visit if you love art, but the place itself has a nice ambience and a good place to just relax and enjoy the view.
Arlhie Rose Razon-Magabo — Google review
Really enjoyable, especially if you have a nice weather day. It was extremely windy today but sunny so it was manageable. It’s a beautiful space and the art is interesting. It reminds me of Louisiana Art Museum in Denmark with a less-impressive indoor collection (Hakone’s) although they have a Picasso ceramic exhibit which was cool to see. I’d love to have had coffee/a snack here but it just wasn’t the day for us for that.
If you’re in the area it’s worth it to come here. I don’t know if I’d take a special trip just for this place but to each ‘er own.
The architecture is awesome, too. I was kinda sad that adults aren’t allowed to play in the net installation.

Great place, totally worth the ticket price. I genuinely didn't expect it to be so good. Adults loved it and so did kids. Spent about 90 minutes there but you could spend longer. The views are also incredible.
Free stroller rental for kids too.
Didn't use the cafe.
Would go back again. Defo recommend.

Great exhibition of different artists that fits perfectly into the landscape. Very varied and entertaining. Many exhibits can be experienced directly, they may be touched or walked through. Especially suitable for children of all ages. At different times of the year you get different impressions.

This museum for me is beautiful! It's a mixture of art appreciation and relaxation. They have a museum for some of Picasso's work . The kids have areas to have fun too! They have a maze, an activity area and craft area. There were families with small children when we visited. And after a long walk around the meandering green, one can relax at a foot bath beside the cafe.

Very unique museum that's expansive and beautiful to walk through, with special exhibit as well like the Picasso museum. Went on a weekend and the weather was beautiful. We were able to buy tickets day of, and there are coin lockers available to store backpacks. We stayed for a few hours as we looked around at a leisurely pace.

Among my favourite museums, wish all museums were open air concepts, refreshing and not stuffy that way. Surrounding mountains were a nice touch, can’t imagine those were easy to install. Even in the winter, the yellowing grass contrasted well with all the exhibits, will absolutely be coming back again soon.
Favourite piece was the metallic wedge of charred humans limbs; very heavy metal. And in contrast to that absolute darkness, my second favourite was the light bending glass tower that to my surprise, was decorated in pictures almost hidden if you don’t look carefully enough. I made it to the top but my battery died, so no picture but I will return in the spring and bring either a phone charger or a briefcase full of batteries to avoid the humiliation I faced carrying around a dead phone.

I visited at the end of February and was lucky enough to witness some snow on the ground. It definitely had a magical feeling and I enjoyed most of the artwork on display. The indoor exhibits were a bit crowded but I guess that can't be helped! The gift shop had a nice range of souvenirs and knick knacks.

This is a stunning art museum with many interesting and aesthetically pleasing art installations. There are many large-scale art design projects nearby, and inside the museum, there is a Picasso art museum for enthusiasts to visit. The indoor design of the spiral tower is particularly impressive and not to be missed. This is definitely a must-visit art museum.

The reason this place is really nice is because you can take your kids to museum but you don't have to be too worried about making them quiet.
As long as it's a nice weather, you can basically spend the whole day slowly walking around, and let your kids run around.
All the sculptures and the art is also dynamic and is in harmony with the nature.
You cannot get proper food there as there's only hot dog that can be counted as food. He brought small sandwiches for our kids.

It’s a sculpture museum featuring lots of open space and interactive pieces. There are several facilities designed for children, and many visitors, mostly Japanese people, take their children with them. It’s a nice refreshing stop that can add some fresh air into your trip. I recommend paying attention to the weather forecast as the region is very prone to fog and rain.

It was an absolute delight exploring the vast collection of outdoor sculptures and the captivating works of Pablo Picasso. 🏞️💫
The museum's picturesque setting amidst the stunning Hakone mountains created a serene atmosphere that perfectly complemented the art on display. From the moment we stepped foot into the museum, we were greeted by a world of beauty and creativity. The open-air concept allowed us to appreciate the sculptures in their natural surroundings, and it felt like walking through an artistic wonderland. 🌿🗿
The Picasso Pavilion was a true highlight of our visit. We were mesmerized by the diverse range of Picasso's masterpieces, showcasing his innovative and ever-evolving style. The museum did an excellent job of curating the exhibition, providing insight into the artist's life and artistic journey. It was fascinating to see iconic paintings, ceramics, and sculptures up close, and to witness the depth of Picasso's creativity. 🎭🖌️
What made the experience even more enjoyable was the museum's interactive features. We were able to participate in various art installations and even create our own masterpieces at the workshop. 🎨 The knowledgeable staff were friendly and provided valuable information about the artworks, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of Picasso's genius.

There’s a nice area for kids only (see second photo) but that’s about it for kids. The sculptures are dotted around the compound. It is a nice walk if the weather is good. Perhaps budget 90mins if you wish to do it at a leisurely pace. I was not that impressed by the Picasso exhibit. Adult ticket costs 1600yen.
Kee Ping Ting — Google review
It’s a sculpture museum featuring lots of open space in a beautiful location that surrounds mountains. superbly maintained landscaped gardens, walkways and well-curated pieces. They have some of Picasso's work. The kids below 12 have areas to have fun too. A brief visit will definitely take a couple of hours. Keep in mind the weather before planning to visit.

Hakone Open air museum
No need to get your tickets in advance for this museum. You can get your tickets at the entrance and even if there is a q it moves pretty fast.
More than anything this place is worth visiting as it is a the space is so beautifully designed that it is easy to walk around and gives the impression of vastness.
There space is big yet cleverly integrates art with nature so that even though there are loads of statues and structures, you never feel stifled or overwhelmed. In fact you will want to walk a lot more to take in all of them.
There are loads of outdoor sculptures by various artists and some are rather interesting. Although i think the word art might be a bit stretched here on occasions when you look at the sculptures or when you read the inspiration of these artists behind their work.
Loads of outdoor exhibits and in general 2 big spaces that allow for more interaction.
One is the Woods of Net which has a net structure within a wooden dome structure that allows for children to use it as a sort of net playground that they can climb on and swing on.
The other is a flower petal like maze that you can walk in and try to find your way out, albeit confusing i must say. In the end i walked the same way back out the way i entered instead of finding the other exit.
As for indoor exhibits, there are 3 (Hakone master piece collection, multi hall that is at the exit, and Picasso Pavilion).
I think the one that people generally spend the most time, is at the Picasso Pavillion. Interestingly instead of chronologically displaying his works or capturing it according to his life:
“This latest exhibit deconstructs the artist himself, presenting perspectives from different angles, such as subject matter and technique, and different points in time, by date of the artwork, so that the viewer may then reconstruct their image of Picasso.
For this exhibit, works from the Picasso Collection have been divided into 17 themes, creating a free and natural exhibition space unbound by chronology.
The Picasso of this exhibit is one who defies definition by a single perspective or specific point in time—Picasso as a continuum transcending time and space.”
The one i enjoyed the most was the symphonic structure. There a circular tower captures the four seasons through stained glass that leads you to an open air space on top with a great view of the museum and the trees and mountains beyond.

Absolutely wonderful! Majestic location in the mountains, with an amazing setting of beautifully landscaped gardens, walkways, forest paths, and well-curated pieces of world-renowned artists and sculptors. The mood is serene and calming, and the experience is one of awe and beauty. My family and I spent a few hours, before it closed for the day, and there was still a good bit of exhibition to which we did not get. But, it was a delightful experience, and we will return.

It was worth a visit. It’s a huge area. We spent a little over an hour here. Lots of sculptures. Our favorite was the stained glass tower. It’s tall, beautiful and very instagram worthy. This open air museum is great for the whole family. There is even an interesting playground structure for kids only. There’s also building with Picasso’s work in it but they don’t allow any photographs or video.
