Art museum
The Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa is an elegant museum dedicated to the renowned Japanese painter, Hiroshi Senju. Designed by the artist himself in collaboration with architect Ryue Nishizawa, the museum represents a harmonious blend of art and nature in Karuizawa. The bright and white-themed building features sinuous glass walls that create a serene pathway through beautiful gardens, allowing visitors to admire both the greenery and Senju's artworks.
One of the most popular art museums to visit in Karuizawa. Do NOT miss this place!!! (no photos allowed inside; so pls check it out yourself)

Spatial experience in the gallery is stunning. The organic shapes of courtyards gave a strong sense of nature. Though the trip to the gallery requires some efforts but it worths the journey

Evocative architecture and artwork. The place, the nature, and the content on display are all first class. Worth the long walk there. Not accessible by public transport. We walked for 20mins from the busstop opp high school.

I've never been to a museum where the architecture and display methods so well fit the exhibited works. The projected illumination in the dark back rooms adds energy and life to their paintings. The bright glass walls and sloped floors of the main gallery create an environment that feels uniquely fused with nature. Wonderful experience.

This place is very pretty and picturesque, but unfortunately you are not 'allowed' to take photos. There are security cameras and guards to make sure you don't :). The artwork is beautiful but even more so with the building. The lighting that comes through, with the minimal design, contrasted with nature is really amazing. They have booklets in all sorts of languages. I suggest you follow the order in the booklet to truly understand the pieces you are looking at. The gift shop is small, I wish they had more things to purchase related to the current exhibit. They basically had small prints and postcards. The museum itself is a little out of the way, you will need a car or a taxi. There is no direct public transit.

Beautiful building, courtyards look impeccable. A little small though, so about 1 hour if you take your time

This place is really really magical. The art and architecture compliment each other perfectly. It is the kind of museum where the artwork makes you feel really small and need to whisper out of reverence.

This elementary school was built by village volunteers in 1898 and has been designated as a national important cultural property. The stained glass is very beautiful, and from the materials inside, you can imagine that elementary school students at the time were able to receive a solid education. There were several organs on display, and although I was told not to touch them, I thought it might be easy to touch them. You may be able to enter from the parking lot without passing through the reception desk, but be sure to check in properly. (Translated by Google) Kaichi Elementary School, which opened in 1897, was appointed as the 10th national treasure in Nagano Prefecture in 2019. Here, "Former Nakagomi Elementary School" was opened in the 8th year of the Meiji era! (won!) It is an elementary school built by the general public, not by the administrative body, by collecting donations in the early Meiji era, when the world became civilized and changed drastically to take in Western style. The carpenter "Yojiro Ichikawa" who designed it was born in "Takaishigami, Saku City". A person who studied Western-style architecture in the United States and submitted the design of "Todabashi" that connects Tokyo and Saitama (although it was not adopted). "Kobayashi Genzo" was born in a middle-sized hut who was a disciple of "Ichikawa Shirojiro". This person is also a great carpenter, and since he was young, he traveled around the world and learned the techniques, and was greatly involved in the construction of shrines and temples in the Saku region. At Nakagome Elementary School, which was opened as a Western-style building by collecting the best of the technology of the time, there is also a stylish "stained glass" light and a "drum tower" that hangs a drum to inform the time. I feel ingenuity everywhere, such as using "plaster" to make up for the shortage of "mortar" and adopting "doors" and "terraces" instead of sliding doors. However, it is a pity that the scale of "Kaichi Elementary School" was not reached due to the capital shortage and the ratio of the population ratio. If it's cleared, it's a "national treasure". Each classroom is open as a material exhibition room, and interesting things are exhibited in the adjacent local museum. It's a pity that we can't climb "Taikoro" because of protection. With this, the entrance fee of 200 yen is cheap. I went for a meal, but Tuesday was a regular holiday.

(Translated by Google) This roadside station is a little different from others, as it has a wide variety of health-conscious organic foods and seasonings🧂🌿 All of the spices were authentic and some were hard to find, so I had a lot of fun just looking at them ♫ There are a lot of craft goods, and I found some cute earrings, so I got them right away ✨ I was able to enjoy delicious coffee on the outdoor terrace and feel refreshed ☕️ This is a wonderful roadside station ♡♡ If you want to shop, this is a place that women seem to like 💡 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I stopped by for a break. I was surprised to find the second Fist of the North Star Jagi manhole card at this place. It's a small roadside station, but the scenery is good. You can see Mt. Asama in front and Mt. Tateshina in the back. Rice harvesting was finished in the paddy field next door, but I thought this was a paddy field where Goro soldier rice could be harvested. We had rice and we could eat, so we had a relaxing time.

(Translated by Google) It is a roadside station with an unusual style with a grassy square in the middle. In the square, children were running and dogs were playing. The dining room looks delicious, but there are not so many seats, and it seems that there is a waiting time due to congestion during lunchtime on holidays. Dogs have a table on the deck of the lawn square, so it seems that they can eat there, but there are only two, so it's a competition here too 😅 (Original)

The restaurant's menu is extensive, and dice steaks come with free rice refills on weekdays. Walk a little south and you'll see the second Souther, a manhole cover with a Fist of the North Star design, installed on the sidewalk. (Translated by Google) A roadside station located in the scenic Asashina district of Saku City. It's not that big, but it's a spot packed with a lot of things. Sufficient facilities for taking a break. Rather, I thought that this roadside station was worth it just for the magnificent view. There is a restaurant where you can eat local branded rice, a direct sales store for local vegetables, and a plaza where you can relax and enjoy the view of Mt. Asama and the countryside. It is an attractive roadside station. (Translated by Google) During New Year's Day, I toured the second series of Fist of the North Star manholes (8 locations in total), and this is one of them. There are no manholes within this facility, and they are located on the sidewalk relatively far away. The picture on the manhole is of Holy Emperor Souther. This is the scene where he confronts Kenshiro at the Holy Emperor's Tomb and attacks while shouting the famous line, "Don't pull back, flatter, don't worry." I thought he was saying it in a more leisurely manner, but just looking at the picture, he seems rather rushed. The footage I saw of Pachinko Fist of the North Star seemed to glorify the original work quite a bit (lol) (Original)

Shinkaisansha Shrine

Mentioned on
Shinto shrine

Shrine
Sacred & Religious Sites
This is really more a complex of sacred sites rather than one shrine. There are ancient tombs, shrines to various gods, and a Buddhist pagoda. The last is very rare to find associated with a shrine these days. Even the shrine gate is a rare type. The grounds are quiet and full of nature that you can explore at your leisure, though we couldn't find an office to buy good luck charms and so on. Cherry blossom and autumn leaves season must be beautiful!

Perfect place for reflection and connecting with nature. Rumor is that some scenes from “Your Name / 君の名は” were inspired by this place.

(Translated by Google) Buildings and ruins that give you a sense of history are lined up casually within the large grounds. There are hardly any people around, and the quiet atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle, gives a strong sense of solemnity. There is a considerable height difference from the torii gate at the shrine entrance to the main shrine, so people with weak legs should be careful. Fortunately, there is a parking lot at the top of the mountain, but once you get off the mountain, going back is more tiring than the distance you can see. It seems that there is usually no resident priest, so there was a written stamp of the shrine. There were signs that amulets were being sold, but I was unable to obtain them. Is it limited to the year-end and New Year holidays?

It happened to be a quiet shrine where many people came to pray for the Shichi-Go-San festival. There is also an unattended goshuin stamp, which is placed in the 300 yen offering box. (Translated by Google) This is a historic shrine in Saku City⛩ When I went to the parking lot, I couldn't pass through the torii gate with a nice shimenawa rope, but there was no parking lot near the torii gate ⛩ because there were a lot of private houses. The three-storied pagoda in the precincts and the east headquarters were designated as important cultural properties of the country. The deity enshrined is East Head Office Kohagi Mikoto Nakahonsha Takeminakata Mikoto West Headquarters Jidaishu no Mikoto Aiden Hondabetsu no Mikoto Here it is✨ The power of the sacred tree in front of the main shrine is truly impressive. Mitamashiroishi is a tangible cultural property of the prefecture. Apparently, the stonework in the shape of a stone coffin between the central and west headquarters is called Mitamadai-ishi. Being in Nagano Prefecture, there are many connections with Suwa Shrine. The reds and oranges of the autumn leaves and the shrine stood out and were quite beautiful.
