Shibata Castle Ruins

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Shibata Castle Ruins, a flatland-style castle situated in the heart of the city, is a well-preserved piece of Japanese history that can be visited seasonally. Despite being one of Japan's smaller castles, its informative staff offers free admission and guided tours of the castle grounds. Although it only takes 15-20 minutes to explore this small but quaint attraction, it may not be as impressive as other competing sites in the area.
This is the famous castle in Niigata. Its a bit small compared to other castles in Japan but it is still nice thou. There is no entrance fee and the staff are really nice. You can see three separate mini castles when you go inside

Nice scale of rebuilt castle ruins. The gate is close during the winter season though.

Nice but there is strong competition.out there and there is little to see. Still worth the visit of you have the time.

Beautiful and ancient. I arrived early in the morning so I couldn't get inside. but it's also great outside.

A very nice but small piece of Japanese history that has been preserved very well over the years. It is one of the smaller castles located in Japan. I found it a little disappointing to see how some of the castle property is currently occupied by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. There is no fee for admission and the workers will give you a very informative tour of the castle grounds.

Just beautiful. There is more structure than the 'ruins' label suggests. This is a very beautiful and calm spot tui enjoy.
Jamie Riddell — Google review
The place is quite small, no entrance fee and very helpful staffs. It only requires 15-20 minutes to wander around. If you have not so full itinerary, you could visit here.
Aulia Listiyadhi — Google review
It's a nice looking castle but very small. Also, not all buildings are open to the public. The biggest building seems to lay in a military base
John van dijk — Google review
The castle is absolutely beautiful, especially during cherry blossom season in spring and when the leaves turn colors in fall. You can tour the inside for free, and the greeting staff are always friendly and helpful.

Had an AMAZING experience here! The staff was so kind and welcoming. They even had an English pamphlet for me. Luckily we went on a weekday so we were the only people on there. There are several historical buildings, a beautiful pond/garden, and even a museum full of interesting things. Though, there is no English for the museum descriptions. It was a gorgeous place full of history and I'm glad I was able to experience it.

I quite like the garden, the over grown mosses gave it a very nature feeling. The house and nature are as one

(Translated by Google) It is a stroll-style Japanese garden with a pond in the center. Surrounding the pond are a sukiya-style shoin and five tea rooms. The beautiful moss is also a highlight. As you exit the garden, there is a museum where materials related to Yasubei Horibe are displayed. The Ashigaru Nagaya (included in the admission fee) located on the property across the road was the first type of building I had ever seen. It has been designated as a national important cultural property.

(Translated by Google) I was lucky to visit during the autumn foliage season! And since it was early in the morning, there was no one around. When you pass through the moss-covered gate, The bright red and yellow autumn leaves caught my eye and instantly stole my heart. This is the remains of the Mizoguchi family, a feudal lord with 100,000 koku. A nationally designated scenic spot said to be the best in eastern Japan. This is a garden from the Edo period. It is said to be a stroll-style garden with a large pond shaped like the cursive character for ``water'' in the center. In short, please admire the garden while walking around the pond (lol). I don't know much about Japanese gardens, so I don't know much about them... Beautiful things are beautiful. It looks like a picture no matter where you look from. The moss is also beautiful. Most of the moss is of the type ``Umasugigoke.'' The Shibata River flowing nearby and the pond in the garden It is said to maintain high humidity, which is good for moss growth. Fallen maple leaves on green moss. It was beautiful, just like the picture. You can also tour the ``Ashigaru Nagaya'' on the road across the river, as it is included in the 700 yen admission fee. It is a tenement house with eight doors with a thatched roof. The main house is 9 tsubo, with a 2 tsubo kitchen and a 1 tsubo dirt floor. You can get a glimpse of the life of lower-class samurai (ashigaru) at the end of the Edo period. Fresh greenery is good, but I also recommend visiting during the autumn leaves season. Enjoy the feeling of calming and purifying your mind.

There was (seafood in the photo as well?) If you look closely at the fresh greenery, you'll see that it's full of autumn leaves🍁, so I thought it was a really spectacular place to see in autumn!
