Awesome Shrine site to visit, plenty of walking and photography. we enjoyed the solemnity of the ancient place. Definitely a must visit Shrine. Walking around is safe and there are plenty of amenities and people are friendly. We discovered hidden shrines and old Japanese houses. the weather was warm and no rain or wind very pleasant time to visit in December - less tourists haha! W very pleased we visited Kotoku-in A very memorable authentic Japanese adventure.

I am glad I went to see the Great Buddha in Kamakura. It was a beautiful day to walk around the site and take photos. We bought some cute souvenirs at the gifts shops on site. They sell stamp books and issue stamps for a small fee, which make a great keepsake. There are beautiful flowers and stone tablets around to view and have a nice stroll. The area isn't very big, so it can get crowded on weekends.

It was raining so it wasn’t as crowded as I have heard it gets. The Buddha is huge and the place is peaceful. The garden around it turned into monuments by the Thai government, these surroundings have gone through many changes given that this Buddha has been there since the 1200, it used to be an “indoor” space but many disasters tore everything down and they just left it as is and turned into an outdoor space. Apparently it is possible to climb up from inside but when I was there it was closed. The town is interesting and underrated. Entrance was about $300 yen’s.

If you're looking to learn about Buddhism and have some time for self-reflection, this temple is a solid choice.

Beautiful sight to see in Kamakura. 200 yen to enter the temple grounds and 50 yen to enter the Buddha statue itself. Large crowds on the weekends especially in the spring when the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom. Overall a must see experience.

One of the best Buddha statue in Japan. It takes about 10-15min by walk from the station. You can enjoy many local street foods there. Saw the photos of this monument several times in travel magazine, internet and tv so I was very excited about to experience it live. Really its worth to travel and enjoy. The Buddha Statue is really huge and always crowded by tourists. Beyond the statue there is also a garden,caves etc. The main attraction is really worth to watch. And during the spring season, the beauty of the Sakura overwhelm its beauty. Really every one must go and visit. Recommended to all the travel lover.

Highly recommended stop for all the visitors of Kamakura. The Great Buddha is magnificent and also offers great picture opportunities. If you like old folks tales, they say that if you enter the Buddha, you can never really leave Japan, you must be coming back! You can buy nice souvenirs as well. Highly recommended

Quick visit, I liked it. I had never seen a giant Buddha before but friends that had seen one in other destinations did not find the visit was super worth the time. Also, it's quick if you just want to see it from the outside. There was a big big line to go inside the Buddha.

We visited around noon on a weekday. It was very quiet and not much foot traffic. We walked there instead of taking a bus. The quiet walk through the small town was very tranquil.

So yes, if you get there, please visit the big buddha. This is a very nice place. However, it's more than that, we loved how we intentionally got lost in the city and by the sea. The calmness, the typical houses, the sea and the mountains offer great landscapes.

Visiting Tokyo's Kotoku-in during the New Year was a remarkable experience. The site, enveloped in a serene forest, exuded a tranquil and spiritual atmosphere. As a historical landmark, it offered a deep connection to Japan's rich heritage. The availability of a friendly English guide made the visit more insightful. Additionally, the nearby restaurants served exquisite cuisine, complementing the day's experience. Kotoku-in is a captivating blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty.

Nice view. Beautiful statue. Overcrowded. Free parking not available. Even paid parkings are hard to find since all the spots are already packed. Loved walking on the streets. Delicious foods available. Varieties of shops. Actual park is not so very spacious. You just enter the gate and there is a big statue and that’s all. It took almost 3 hours to reach there for us and it all ended in like less than 15 minutes. Not bad for first timers. Lovable environment and streets but personally,I am not so very satisfied.

The big Buddha here makes me so peaceful. We can go inside the Buddha and learn that the core is "nothing". Hase dera is close from here and is good place too. There is a souvenir shop nearby where you can get replica swords and other cool souvenirs.

Took our family here on New Years Eve to offer our blessings & wishes for good fortune into 2023. You can arrive by train and have a 10 min walk up the main road, littered with cottage style food stops, souvenirs, etc … the road is drivable and there are MANY small paid parking lots before or just past the Buddhist Temple site (around 800 yen) … if you don’t plan to sit & dine … you’ll only need 1 hour to see the grounds and maybe walk around quickly to some shops. Beautiful feel to the small town & the shrine itself. The area around offers much more with beaches, eateries and more sight seeing so don’t get stuck there too long! You must pay to enter & unfortunately still overly stringent COVID rules don’t allow you to walk inside the bronze Buddha statue (comes at extra cost)

Very nice place to visit, it is worth it 👌 even a long train ride from Tokyo. There is no place to get in there. As we know, Japan is open to tourists and there were many people by the time we got there. There are many shops and local stores to get what is needed from souvenirs, food and other stuff.

Worth doing a day trip from Tokyo to this serene temple. The temple complex isn’t too big and can be covered in 30 mins. Although it gets super busy sometimes so you may need to wait for getting the perfect click. You can go inside the statue for a small fee but it may get claustrophobic.

Not as big as I thought it would be. Not a five star experience as the big statue is the only sight to see. It does have a small building apparently "donated" by a Japanese from Korea during their reign. It houses a famous buddah sculpture inside, but it is not even open for viewing. Three stars at best.

Visited in September. Place feels spacious and relaxing, near the green hills. Many benches available. There is a souvenir shop and toilets. You can relax for some time here. The statue can be entered for 100 yen. Entrance to the area is ~500 yen.

This is the famous "sitting buddha" that can be found here in Kanagawa. It is called "The Great Buddha Kamakura" consideres as a national treasure. You can see it in Kotoku-in. Many tourists are coming over especially during the spring season cause we can also see some cherry blossom trees in full-bloom.

It’s a peaceful and historical place. Washroom and accessibility is good. Buddha statute was so big with beautiful cherry blossoms.

Very pleasurable experience! Not that long of a wait and not too many people there. We got our stamp in our book and also bought some fortunes! It was fun to know that this Buddha is in a German book for religion taught in schools :) This place is definitely worth a visit!

Attraction Experience Only key attraction is the HUGE Bronze Statue of Great Buddha cast in 1252 A.D. It is formidable how long it lasted, withstanding the damage from nature and how much care they took to maintain the statue. You are able to purchase incense for 100 yen. Goshuin is available for those who are interested, with a waiting time of 10 mins. There is a scenic garden behind that is pretty as well. Crowd Quite a lot of people but not crowded to the extent it is so packed you need to squeeze through.

This is undoubtedly a very famous park and usually very crowded. The Buddha structure can be visited from the inside, but only in a small part (not at the top). There are many souvenir shops and a beautiful garden in the courtyard behind the Buddha. There are also some well-kept public toilets with sound controls too, crazy!

Beautiful temple grounds/compound, early September the fall foliage was not present yet but still a really cool place. Not stroller or wheelchair accessible beyond the main entrance, pretty tall and steep steps throughout the grounds. ¥400 yen per person to enter easily payable with yen, card or transit card with English language self serve kiosk. Would be beautiful to see in all seasons.

Undoubtedly, Hasedera is among my favorite temples in Kamakura, captivating with its natural beauty and spiritual aura.

This is a beautiful temple. Everything and every level depicts serenity and calmness. This temple also has great funsui in that it backs up to a mountain and directly faces the ocean. There are many levels to experience this temple with many waterfalls, Buddha, amazing architecture and beautiful landscape. Overall, this was a great experience.

Hasedera has one of the best panoramic views in Kamakura. Not only is the temple peaceful and beautiful, but so is the surrounding area.

This temple might be my most favorite temple in Kamakura area. Not only they got beautiful hydrangeas in the season, but they got stunning view over the sea. The entire temple is very well designed including the garden too. Though it got a lot of stairs so it’s not idea for people who can’t handle stairs. This temple is definitely worse visiting. This temple accept credit card and transit card besides the cash too which is super rare! Totally a plus for me as I don’t carry much cash.

Nice place to see as well as a great cardio workout with the stairs. Don't let the stairs dissuade you from visiting here, though. There is beautiful scenery to behold here. I would recommend taking the time to see here and the shops around the foot of the temple.

Temple with great views. You can see the coast from up here. There are a few stairs to climb, but it’s just a few minutes. If you come in May, you can see the hydrangea flowers 🌸 (アジサイ). This area is not far from Tokyo, so I recommend coming here for a 1-day excursion. Start at the great Buddha, then come to Hasedera, and then either go to Enoshima & then Yokohama (Sakuragicho or Chinese town), or directly Yokohama.

This is absolutely worth visiting. Inside the temple is a huge cave, one of the most impressive things. There is a Buddha statue inside the cave, and you have to bend and enter. The most important thing is to bring enough coins for making wishes. Besides, at the top of the temple, you can enjoy the sea view.

It was serene even with the crowd. Ocean view from the top was awesome. It will be full of hydrangea in summer, which must be magnificent. The big golden statue in the main hall is another feature of this temple.

This is Kamakura Hasedera Temple. A very nice temple located near the Kotoku-in (The great Buddha). The nearest train station is the Hesa station. The temple is huge and it has a unique design. There are also some nice ponds around it and you can also see the costal view of the ocean from its place. So nice, really!

Wowowow! Visited this because it was close to the Big Buddha and had a great visit. The shrine is beautiful and very well maintained. It can get a little crowded to see the amazing statue of Kannon, but it's worth waiting. Remember not to take pictures of her, it's rude! Definitely check out the goddess caves and explore the grounds - it's very peaceful and there's a lot to see.

The beautiful temple with many unique spots for taking photos. The entrance is not large but with a slightly reclining branches of the pine tree in the front and a red giant lantern hanging in the middle of the gate is a perfect combination and is a truly Japanese scene. Inside the temple, along the path are dotted with arrays of small Buddha statues on slope and by little creek. There are also a hydrangea path with thousands of plants in bloom in May. The temple is on a hill slope with bay view. A short walk from Kotoku-in, definitely worth visiting after paying respect to Daibutsu.

Hasedera is a temple of the Jodo sect. The temple is famous for its gilded wooden statue of Kannon - one of the largest wooden sculptures in Japan (it is 9.18 m tall). It is said that it was carved from the same tree as the similarly tall Kannon statue worshiped at Hasedera Temple in Nara. On the opposite side of the main hall stands the Amida-do Hall with an almost 3m tall, golden statue of Amida Buddha. The temple's main buildings stand halfway up the slope on a terrace which allows for nice views of Kamakura. Here you find a place to buy Japanese sweets, meals and beverages. Close to the entrance to the temple is a beautiful garden with small ponds. The temple is open from 08:00 to 17:00. The entrance (Oct 2023) was 400 yen per person. The temple is close to Hase Train Station (450 m) on Enoden Line. It take just few minutes to get back to Kamaukura from there. However Enoden Line is not covered by JR Pass, so the trip has to be paid separately (for example by Suica or Pasmo).

Hasedera is a beautiful Buddhist temple in Kamakura half way up a small mountain. It is very scenic and you can see the coastline. According to legend, the statue that you can see here is a one of two images of Kannon carved my a monk in the year 721. One was enshrined in Hasedera in the city of Nara and the other was set adrift in the sea to find the place which it had a karmic connection. The statue washed up near Kamakura in the year 736. It was immediately brought to Kamakura and a temple was built to honor it. You can also see 100s of small "Jizo"statues placed there by people who are mourning babies they lost to miscarriage or stillbirth. If you visit Kamakura, you should check out this temple and there is also a nice restaurant with a great view. There is vegan food available too.

A fantastic temple to visit, even in dreary weather. Unique miniature statues and a very well tender garden. At the top there is a wide ranging view of Kamakura. Probably the best temple in the area.

Incredible temple, probably the most exciting one within an hour of travel from Tokyo, it's recommened to plan a trip here. The grounds are vast but on a hill side with mans stairs. The gardens are very nice, there's an interesting cave and collections of stone statues, and the design of the temple buildings are simply breathtaking. You can also get a great view of the bay. This temple truly ignited my fascination with Kamakura, I would say it it the most essential place to visit here and makes for a well rounded experience.

Built on a wooded hill overlooking Kamakura and the ocean, this temple has many jizo statues. The temple garden is a lovely walk. I visited it in autumn and the yellow and reddish colors of the leaves was spectacular. There is a small temple where you can leave your wish written on an oyster shell. The entrance is cheap and highly recommended to visit if you go to Kamakura.

Absolutely beautiful place. Natural views of the seaside town were stunning, and the temple is so well-maintained. It is a zen retreat on a hilltop, and on top of that the temple offers prayer services for the new year, as well as miscarried babies. You can leave money and write your wishes on a cup, etc. The temple also has several charms that you can buy as gifts for loved ones. These charms are very unique, and they are not overtly religious. Out of all the places I visited, their charm shop was probably where I got the most gifts.

Stunningly beautiful gardens and views. Take note that you need to walk a lot of stairs and in the cave trail you need to go almost in your knees, so wear comfortable clothes.

Big golden Guan-yin statue is located in this temple. There is a ticket fees to entrance but this is strongly recommended temple for praying and relaxing. The garden is well taken care and decorated. The view on top of the hill is so amazing. This is my most impressive temple in Enoshima-Kamakura trip.

Very nice red temple at the end of a busy touristy street. The entrance is free and it is really close to town. We have seen people get married at this place. Overall the palace has a huge courtyard with lots of water and greenery. Definitely check this temple out it looks amazing.

Very popular temple for a reason. There is a beautiful promenade between the station and shrine. It is easy to access and has good signs. There are nice toilets and a museum. The shrine itself can be busy, so if you want to go inside and do blessings, be prepared to wait a little. Overall very beautiful and worth seeing.

Cherry blossoms weren’t blooming yet but there were a lot of visitors when we went there during the long weekend. The main staircase and temple were crowded, but other areas like the pond were just fine. Across the street there’s a paid parking.

Went on a weekday but still a crowd, not stroller friendly if you want to go up the steps to the temple, free admission, small fee to see the museum with replicas of artifacts. No photography inside the shrine or museum. Parking available but some lots more expensive than others. Beautiful temple grounds.

This shrine is one of famous spot in Kamakura. They have long history so good to enjoy history and culture more than 1 century ago of Japan. There are long walk way to the main shine. And need to get stairs up to the upper main shrine so better to wear comfortable shoes. Sometimes the wedding ceremony is held in this place so you are lucky if you can see that! You can take Japaneish picture all around the filed so good place to take pictures! You can get by food from Kamakura station! I don’t recommend to come by car because the road is narrow and always pedestrians are walking by the narrow road. So please be careful to fringe in this historical area. Enjoy!!!

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is Kamakura's most important shrine. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government. The shrine is reached via a long, wide approach that leads from Kamakura's waterfront through the entire city center, with multiple torii gates along the way. The main hall (Hongu or Jogu) stands on a terrace at the top of a wide stairway. The main hall includes a small museum, which displays various treasures owned by the shrine, such as swords, masks and documents. The temple is open from 05:00 to 21:00. The entrance is free. Hongu (the main shrine of the temple) is roughly 1 km from the Kamakura Train Station.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was amazing! The grand shrine's beauty and peaceful atmosphere were truly special. A must-see in Kamakura for anyone exploring Japan's rich history and culture.

One of the most famous shrines in Kamakura, however I believe it is so overrated. As soon as you go up the stairs you will find a guard. 😬 No photos can be taken. In general I don't like the atmosphere.

It’s a nice Shinto Shrine. I visited during one of the new year vacation days (2nd Jan) , and it was very crowded. Overall a very pretty walkway till you reach the temple. Gives good vibes. There’s also a few ponds where you could sit and chill.

Huge compound surrounded by a few gardens, long flight of stairs to the top but can't go into the temple itself so it's just walking around on the outside. There's also a Maruyama Inari Shrine behind. As I was leaving, I saw some cart stalls set up along the long walk way towards the temple, selling food. I imagine this place to be rather crowded later in the day, am glad I made it there early, for a quiet and peaceful walk through.

This is the most famous tourist place in Kamakura. It has a wide area consist of a big and beautiful shrine on the top of the stairs, a few small shrines and a beautiful garden with a pond. The garden is so beautiful and peaceful.

This is one of my favorite shrines that I have visited. It’s very unique and also has an Inari shrine as well which reminded me of a game I used to play. Definitely worth the trip if you’re in the area. They do have some hydrangeas there when they are in season but they are not a main attraction. Check it out, especially the barrels and the pond.

There was live music on the Sunday I was there, and you could feed the carp and the turtles. Beautiful ponds with flowers and of course a great temple complex. There was a nice atmosphere, and there is a museum near the shrine. Afterwards I walked to another shrine where people were washing their money which was fun. And then I hiked over the mountain to the Great Buddha statue and ended the dat dining by the beach with a view of Enoshima. I highly recommend Kamakura, you can't go wrong!

During my New Year's visit to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, I was blessed with splendid weather, enhancing the shrine's serene beauty. The food stalls offered a delightful array of traditional treats, making the experience even more memorable. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with the spiritual ambiance, provided a perfect start to the year. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of cultural richness and culinary delight in a peaceful setting.

One of the famous shrine near kamakura. This shrine is famous for wedding. Many people prefer for the wedding due to many reasons and very good photographic areas in the shrine. The pond in the shrine have very calm nature. One of the good and must visit place for the near kamakura. Parking near this area is bit expensive

Back in those times, Kamakura was a politically important area. A lot of history on those very stairs you walk up too, where Minamoto no Sanetomo was assassinated by his nephew. Also along the pathway there are some really good food stalls. Try the gyu-tan. Beef tongue on a stick. So delicious, you won’t want to share!

Beautiful shrine inside Kamakura. Architecture was great and the sakura trees in the front makes the scene gorgeous when sakura flower blooms.

Famous and popular shinja in Kamakura. You can experience new kinds of traditions here in this shinja. Such as infinite circle praying. However, it is not a good place to meditate because of so many people or visitors.

The main temple that stretches from a height down to the straights of Dankazura. Quite busy with a lot of things happening from wedding shots, to blessings and other small booths for self-serving blessings. A bridge stretching over a pond and river with huge carps. Very beautiful temple, no entrance fee and has come steps to cover when heading up the temple.

Highly recommend this place! A must experience in Kamakura! Restaurant is on the third floor. Walk all the way up and put your name on the list. Instructions are posted on the wall and very easy to follow. Pancakes are fresh made with good ingredients. They have sweet and savory with some omelette choices. Pancakes take about 20 minutes to make and cost about ¥1200. Coffee is available ala carte or as a ¥200 add on. Vanilla ice cream available for ¥100.

The most amazing fluffy pancakes I have ever had! The flavor combos are yummy like berry & cheese and chocolate bananas. Cute little restaurant with friendly staff.

Really nice pancakes in Kamakura. Shop is small but comfortable. Pancakes are carefully prepared and taste great. Highly recommended. 1000yen for three pieces of fluffy pancakes.

The salmon and avocado salad is pretty good but small for 1380. The wheat pancakes are not good and I dont get why original pancakes would not be a part of a set. The hot chocolate for 600 is overpriced, but at least it was delicious and big. The spicy chai is watery and not spicy. If you're looking for a better variety of brunch options, I suggest Brunch Kitchen. Also, I think this restaurant is a good choice for just hot cocoa on a cold winter day, but I think you should eat somewhere else.

So happy that there's no queue for the pancake but i was so unhappy afterwards... As i didn't order the most recommended pancake which is original pancake called happy pancake... The one i have ordered which is made by oat ? Which is not fluffy.... Overall the quality was quite good

Try the souffle pancake at A Happy Pancake Kamakura in between shopping at the street. The serving is big and it is especially delicious with their syrup.

This is a zen temple with a long history. The gardens are well kept and the atmosphere is very relaxing. If you want to get those nice bamboo forest pictures without many people and not moving far away from Tokyo, then this is the place. Also, for an extra fee, you can drink some Japanese green tea while contemplating the bamboo garden. Recommended.

Very nice day trip area in Kamakura, peaceful area and walk through the bamboo forest and temple area. Area where you can get a matcha green tea and sit looking out into the bamboo trees. Awesome place to go in Kamakura. Limited parking but if you are going into the bamboo area there are some spots to park for free. A total of 58 species of bamboo, the scenic spot is more than 70000 acres, where is China's largest collection place of landscape, caves, lakes, waterfalls, with a long history of human landscape and it is one of the biggest original “green bamboo park”; Vegetation coverage is 87%, and the natural oxygen bar with extremely high content of air negative ions in the country. Literally a world of different types of bamboo trees covering over 500 hills, the forest stretches as far as the eye can see and fills the air with the fragrance of bamboo. Favorable mild temperatures year-round make it an ideal tourist destination. Among the ocean of bamboo lies a narrow five-kilometer path. Walking along this "Jade Green Corridor", the fresh air and sound of the green waves rustling in the wind create a heavenly experience.

Such a magical place and extremely peaceful. This temple is out the beaten trail which is great because there were no crowds so very quiet. Entry fee is 400 yen or 1000 yen if you added the green tea experience. A short bus ride from Kamakura station. Absolutely worth the trip.

Beautiful, quiet, not so busy Bamboo forest near from Tokyo! Getting a ticket with Green tea is highly recommend! Real green tea is freshly made and served.

Delightful walk and matcha at the bamboo forest. There was a queue to enter the tea house last Sunday. It would be better to go on weekdays to savour the place and tea more leisurely

The forrest was small but quite beautyful, it wasn't too crowded. When we bought the tickets, we chose the version with tea. It was totally worth it. We drank matcha with some sugary sweets while also having a nice view of the bamboo forest.

Hokokuji Temple is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle. This Zen oasis is a hidden gem, known for its bamboo groves. The peaceful atmosphere and the rustling bamboo create a calming experience. Don't miss the matcha tea in the tranquil teahouse. A must-visit in Kamakura!

Small temple with a mini bamboo forest. It was peaceful and serene. 400yen per person to enter, pay more if want to have green tea while enjoying the bamboo forest.

The shrine is up a small road from the bus stop. The garden leading up to the shrine is beautiful and manicured. Pay 500¥ at the ticket office building left of the main shrine to visit the beautiful garden and tall bamboo forest. Note the bud is extremely crowded, but the shrine is a fair distance from the train station.

Small, peaceful, and easy to walk around. The actual bamboo forest was pretty small. We did not do the tea portion so we paid ¥300 per person to enter. Not sure it was worth paying, but was a pretty place.

Bamboo forest? It is a small bamboo grove for the admission fee of ¥400. Not worth the price or effort to walk there, unless you are dying to see a couple of bamboo. The temple looks nice though and at least admission to the temple is free.

Beautiful temple and grounds. Kenchoji Temple is one of several in Kamakura on the way to Hasedera Temple and Kotoku-In. It's worth a visit of maybe 30 to 45 minutes. Just keep in mind that you would have to spend several days in the area if you want to visit all the smaller temples in Kamakura. If you are going for a day trip, I really recommend focusing on the Hasedera Temple and Kotoku-In.

More people need to visit this temple! It's not listed number 1 in Kamakura but in my mind, it deserves at least number 2. The grounds are extensive and beautiful. It fully elicit that zen temple experience in the way that it demands you to climb stairs to deserve seeing the view from above. Some features include: a zen garden, a meditation hall (remove your shoes), a bamboo grove, a really early and intact Buddhist hall dating back a thousand years.

A beautiful temple, as it is a Rinzai temple, the architecture is slightly different from other temples in Japan. Take a time to walk and climb the stairs to enjoy the rest of the temples and the view from the sea. Also there is a trekking road that connects with other temples.

Kenjoji Temple was the first of the five major Zen temples Kamakura and the first Zen temple in Japan. Kenjoji Temple is the main school of the Kenjoji School of Rinzai Buddhism. The temple was founded in 1253 by Governor Tokiyori Hojo at the time. He invited Rankedo Ryu, the Chinese high priest from Nan Song, to open up Japan's first true Zen temple. This is one of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura and it features absolutely massive wooden structures that are beautifully preserved and a testament to Japanese architecture. It’s about 50 mins walk from Hasedera and if you plan it right (which I did not) you can visit the Tsurugaoka Hachimangū as well. Maybe because it’s a little out the way, it was nearly empty when we were there, which just made it all the more peaceful. I imagine it’s great to visit on a sunny day.

The best temple I have visited around Tokyo so far. Very not crowded. I was actually almost alone there which I really didn’t get as it is so wonderful.

This temple was much more exciting than I anticipated. The buildings are very rustic with little paint so it doesnt look very glamorous but that gives it a much more spiritual atmosphere. The main building had colorful cloth and a recognizable ceiling painting. You have to take off your shoes to get inside the building behind the golden gate but there's also a nice resting area with a view of the garden. I think its definitely worth to take a walk or bus here from Kamakura or Ofuna and it's much less crowded too.

Kenchōji is the No 1 of Kamakura's 5 great Zen temples. It’s the oldest temple in the city. It was founded by the ruling regent Hojo Tokiyori in 1253 during the Kencho Era after which it was named. The temple consists of many temple buildings and subtemples, and stretches from the entrance at the bottom into the hills behind. After passing through the Sanmon gate, on the right side you will find Bonsho (temple bell) that is designated a national treasure. The next structure is Buddha Hall with a statue of the Jizo Bodhisattva. Behind Buddha Hall is the Hatto (Dharma Hall) with statue of Kannon and a dragon painted on its ceiling. Hatto is the largest wooden temple building in eastern Japan. Behind the Hojo there is a pretty garden designed by Zen master Muso Kokushi. Further up the hill by a stairways (15-20 min), you will find Hansobo (a shrine for the protection of Kenchoji) with a small terrace to admire the view over the temple grounds and Kamakura city from the above. When we visited (Oct 2023) Mount Fuji observation deck was closed fore renovation. Further up the hill (another 5 min.), there is a 2nd observation deck with even better views over the entire temple grounds and the city of Kamakura. If you enter the temple ground from the hill' side (for example after trekking from the Engakuji Temple as us), you may but the entry tickets at Hansobo. The temple is open from 08:30 to 16:30. Entrance (Oct 2023) was 500 ¥ per person.

Beautiful temple to visit if you’re in Kamakura. The best of the top 5 Rinzai Zen temples in Kamakura and the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan. If you are interested in Zen Buddhist or Japanese history, visiting Kenchoji is a must! The grounds around the temple and the temple itself are absolutely beautiful. And you can even join Zazen with the monks when you visit (at certain times).

Short few minutes walk from Kita Kamakura station. This amazing zen temple is build into the mountains and forest. A quiet, serene haven and a beautiful walking excursion learning about the lifestyle of the abbot's and the structures and history around it. It is recommended to come here during spring season and autumn as the view of the place gets so much more enlightened than a normal summer day walk. 500 yen for entry i believe, with two tea houses in the area. One being requiring to walk 100 + steps? to the top for a fantastic view with a chance of Fuji.

My favorite Japanese temples are always Zen Temples. As such, Engaku-ji was no exception. I enjoy the understated architecture, the sense of peace and utter tranquility of these temples, and the focus on the beauty of the natural surroundings. The convenience to Kita-Kamakura station and its status as one of the five most important Zen temples in Kamakura ensures a steady stream of visitors. By visiting on a weekday I was able to avoid the hordes of people and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The giant bell designated as a national treasure is well worth the climb up to see it, in my opinion.

Very scenic, with amazing panoramic view of surrounding hills/mountains. If you are lucky, on a clear day you can see Mount Fuji. This temple is famous for a bell that has a sort of mystical story behind it!

Engakuji is built into the slopes of Kita-Kamakura's forested hills. It is No 2 of Kamakura's 5 great Zen temples. It was founded by the regent Hojo Tokimune in 1282 to pay respect to the fallen Japanese and Mongolian soldiers during Mongolian invasion of Japana in 1281. The first main structure encountered upon entering the temple grounds is the Sanmon gate (built in 1783). Behind it stands the temple's main hall, the Butsuden, which displays a wooden statue of the Shaka Buddha. The Butsuden was rebuilt in 1964 after the former building had been lost in an earthquake. Further into the temple grounds stands Shariden hall in which a tooth of Buddha is enshrined. Another attraction and national treasure is large bell that stands on a hill next to a teahouse where you may enjoy a cup of tea and Japanese sweets. The temple is open from 08:00 to 16:30. It is next to Kita-Kamakura Train Station (around 100 m). Entrance (Oct 2023) was 500 yen per person.

Watching it was really fun and the staff smiled and waved at me and didn't mind me taking pictures and videos. The temple is a beautiful place. Personally, it's a must-see if you're in the area. It's a super cute shrine with some water features and worship area in a cave. one of the few free shrines in the vicinity. I see a lot of shrines and this stood out to me. You can pay a little bit to wash your money here - the myth is that you receive twice back what you wash.

A very cool little shrine with a tunnel through solid rock as its entrance and free parking. A unique place to wish for good fortune by washing your money in the waters surrounding the shrine. Much more interesting than the big (not so big) Buddha.

The Zeniarai Benten Shrine is a hidden gem in Kamakura, Japan, nestled atop a steep hill. The climb may be a bit challenging to some, but the enchanting shrine and its surroundings are undoubtedly worth the effort.

Temple with unique legend. They said that if you wash your money with the water inside the cave, your money will be doubled. Tho i don't believe it. The inside is quite big with some seats available for tourists to take some rest. The wooden unpainted torii gates is very cute and looks awesome.

To be honest, I think Kamakura has more interesting places. Given the city is so much enjoyable on feet, have a long journey to this place is not weighted with my expectations. The good part: see how people leave in smaller Japanese city before got there.

Meigetsu-in is absolutely beautiful! We saw the hydrangeas and the garden behind the main building. Definitely worth the trip. It was a little busy even during the week, but we were still able to enjoy the visit.

Nice temple to visit but there are better options in Kamakura. Don't get me wrong - the Meigetsu-In Temple is beautiful but there are so many temples on the way to Hasedera Temple and Kotoku-In (the main attraction in Kamakura) that I really think you can skip it. However, if you decide to stop for 30 minutes, you will not be disappointed. Walking distance from the JR Station and on the way to Kotoku-In.

Not really interesting if its not a blooming season. Went there and the trees were dry and got not much color in it making the view quite dull. Love the nature atmosphere. Birds chipping and a lot of squirrels running here and there. There were also rabbits. I think it will be very beautiful with flowers blooming but without that it is a boring place. I think they should decrease the entrance fee if its not a blooming season. Quite dissapointed

Visited on 6/22/23 It is few mins away from Kita Kamakura Station. The entrance fee is 500 yen as of the time of our visit. We enjoyed the beauty of Ajisai despite the gloomy weather. Since it is Hydrangea season, there were many people who visited even if it is a weekday. There is a sign not to touch the flowers so take note of that. The road going to this place is narrow, so kindly walk on the side and give way to the vehicles passing by.

Nice walk to the temple from Kita Kamakura station. The temple entry is 500 yen, with the expectations that you are lucky to go at the right time. The brochure provided lets you know the types of seasonal flowers that you will experience throughout the walk in the temple. Unfortunately, I was unlock and was in between everything. However, I can see this place being extremely beautiful during cherry blossom, spring or late autumn fall. Think the lucky highlight for us who miss the inbetween seasons of flowers is the room that pans out to a window garden. What a shot for photographers. Strong advice... do your flower season research before coming here.

Also, known as the Hydrangea Temple - literally thousands of hydrangeas fill the paths throughout the temple grounds. During this season the temple is crowded and the best time to visit is right when they open at 9am. The entrance is ¥500 and a separate viewing fee ¥500 for the Japanese Iris garden. A parking lot is NOT provided and you will need to find parking on the main road and walk to the shrine.

The temple was bigger than what i expect. The flower garden was very beautiful with some temple building and zen garden. It even has trekking trail to climb the mountain too. Unfortunately it was raining hard when i came. The street was slippery and i can't take photos without umbrella which make the background unseen. Visited on June 21, 2023 (Wednesday). I went to see hydrangea. I arrived at 11am. So many flowers and also so many people. Even on weekday morning, it was quite crowded because now is the peak season for hydrangea. No waiting for ticket purchase (¥500 for adults). I felt it was less crowded at lunch time so I could enjoy the flowers and take pictures.

Fairly short walk about 10 minutes from Kita Kamakura Station away from the regular popular temples that many frequent. You'll get to see the various flora and fauna that bloom based on the seasons. It was very peaceful as there was little to no one around. It is 500 yen to enter the grounds and another 300 yen for the garden.

A very popular place to visit during hydrangea season. Expect crowds especially if you come on a weekend. I went on a Monday and it was still crowded though and I just happened to be there when a TV station was filming. There are tons of flowers and other things to see. A must visit if you go to Kamakura during Hydrangea season. You won’t be disappointed.

Not an easy hike. Be prepared for some steep climbs. Make sure you leave early enough in the day so you aren’t caught in the dark. The Daibutsu is impressive, but access closes at 4:30, so allow plenty of time.

We passed through this area after visiting the Jochi-ji temple, to arrive at the Kuzuharaoka Shrine. it was a beautiful walk in nature, in some places it was a little difficult, but never too much. There are climbs, descents, steps, roots, ... But the silence is priceless and the panorama around is truly beautiful and peaceful.

Nice quite track away from the crowds. Takes about 1hr from Jochiji Temple to Daibutsu. There are signs along the way both in Japanese and English. Parts of the trails are not paved and can be quite muddy slippery after rain. We were there after it rained. Track was still manageable but it best to be done during dry weather. Do make a stop at the Zeniarai Benten Shrine and the Genjiyama public park (Minamoto Yoritomo statue).

Very popular hiking trail among locals and tourists. Good parks are located on the way to hiking trail and hiking trail path is well maintained. Huge trees with nice view from this place. Kamakura is home to several sand beaches, which are popular getaways for those who want to escape the nearby cities of Tokyo and Yokohama for some sunbathing, swimming and surfing. The official beach season in Kamakura lasts from July to August.

We goes there for Hanabi. It is a large park with public restroom. When Hanabi matsuri happens, so many food stores there. Many people gather around with beautiful yukata. Nice 👍

It is for sure a good place to hang out. There is enough space for you to play any kind of sports you desire. You will be able to meet friendly and kind people. There is a police station just infront of this location so makes it more safe. At times this place is dirty due to many people doing picnics. On weekends might be very packed. However, give it a try and have fun !

Regardless, it is a good experience coming to here. I will come back again. Overall, a good trainline for photos.

A must visit station on Enoden line. Here, train runs along the road and beach, so the views are just amazing. Slam Dunk Railroad Crossing, Kamakura High School are worth visit points to be explored here.

Very scenic and quaint place. Despite the crowd, this place is very peaceful and somewhere you can relax. It was also great to visit the spot which is famous from the Slamdunk’s opening song. A must visit even once!

Visited the famous railway scenery from Japanese comic Slam Dunk in May 2023. Classic train ride along the coast, enjoy the Coastal walk and watch the locals ride motorbike in groups. The train goes around many attractions, unfortunately we didn't have time for 江之島. (A good few hrs is required) Avoid peak season or holiday time as the train gets overly crowded.

It is a must visit place if you are a big fan of Slam Dunk. It took an hour from Tokyo to get here. We visited on Monday late afternoon but there were still a bunch of people trying to take photos or videos of Enoden passing the famous railway crossing.

Besides being famous for the classic anime Slam Dunk. The Area offers a great view of the beach and the surfing community. Note: Observed some tourist blocking the area both for locals going to the train station and Cars crossing the Railroad. Be Respectful towards the locals and avoid causing any inconvenience.

Rated "D" for Divorce. It's a quaint shrine with historical relevance to noblewomen divorcees. The front is filled with the typical greenery as seen in most other Japanese shrines, and likewise with the back, the souls of the dead remain buried in stone.

Good tourist attraction, if you are around Kamakura, and want to do the shrine run all around, ensure to cover this shrine, if interested in a hill trail, you can travel from this place to the Buddha Statue(Kotuko-in). It will take you around 45 minutes, but highly recommended. Remember to wear your good hiking or sports shoes! Enjoy.

I entered the temple grounds quietly to look around and took some photos of the flowers. Suddenly, a woman approached me, she was not a staff member but just another visitor. She yelled at me and told me that I'm not allowed to take photos. I later saw a "no photo sign" in the middle of the temple but there is no indication of this restriction at the entrance gate. I wanted to spend a peaceful time but it looks like people here are unfriendly and lack compassion. I felt disappointed since I was at a temple. I don’t think it’s harmful for the flowers to have their picture taken if the photographer is gentle and doesn’t destroy the plant. I don't know why she as so unfriendly and rude. The temple itself is lovely, small and quiet but I won't come again as I didn’t feel welcome.

Nice place full of nature and some amazing photo taking spots. The shrine is not as big though and the entrance stairs is quite long including a round stairs at the top as well. Not too many steps though. Can visit when here.

The shrine is approximately a 30-minute journey from the train station, and I decided to walk there on the day. Along the way, I encountered many unique residential houses that caught my attention. Since the shrine is located uphill, the walk was a bit challenging and required more physical effort.

Beautiful little Inari shrine that feels like it belongs in a Ghibli movie. This lesser known gem is in Kamakura right near all of the main attractions, but doesn't show up on most guidebooks. This spot greatly pleases The Fox God.

A wonderful shrine to visit and explore about a 15 minutes walk from Kamakura Station. It’s a little hike up a hill but if you like foxes and Torii Gates it’s a great shrine to visit. It was nice, quiet and just peaceful to enjoy

the way to the temple is closed... i cant say if there is another way to get there. its a diffcult way to get there and i dont recommend for elder people or people with walking difficulties... to many cliffs.

If you're looking for a truly special shrine experience, Sasuke Inari is not to be missed.

It was a great shrine to visit. It’s a small shrine compared to others and it wasn’t crowded at all. It is free to visit and it was only about a 10 minute walk from Kotoku-in.

Please do be careful, there is a small sign near the enterance that written in Japanese, it means something like 'watch out for bees' i think, because i saw several people got attacked when passing by. One of them even got stung on her head. She was panicked and was shouting for help. It was scary. I tried to help her but the bees were already stung her head. The bees only attack people who exits the shrine. I didn't notice any scream or running when they're entering.
