The island is absolutely breathtaking! It really felt like something out of a post card! The views around the island of the bay and other islands is so picturesque and you won't regret visiting! Plus it's free with a JR pass! There are also lovely deer running around the park who are quite friendly!

My itinerary was really packed and wasn't sure that I should add this in but I'm so glad that I did! The ferry was a very pleasant process and had great views of the Tori from the boat. The island was beautiful. I enjoyed the leaf shaped cakes and oysters. The deer were a delightful.

The island is known for the shrine, but the little town and beautiful nature is what makes it really special. Its beautiful. Tourist oriented, but not too tacky. Take the cable car up the mountain. Hike the extra mile to the top. Then come down and cool your feet in the cold mountain spring that flows through town. An amazing experience.

One of my favorite places to visit in Japan. This is a beautiful island filled with history and great food. From the temples, shrines, deer, food, and hikes, this island has much to do. I recommend going during the fall to see the beautiful colors of the leaves changing.

Your trip to Hiroshima is not completed without a visit to Itsukushima island. As shared by many other travelers..it’s a very special island that offer many unique experiences. I recommend to stay until the evening…the scenery is mesmerizing. We were very fortunate be there for a spectacular fireworks show as well. This is a very memorable place for us!

This island is great There is a lot to see and do here, you can stay and spend a night as well, there are a few hotels and accommodation in the area. There are ferrys ⛴️ that runs every 20 min and if you got the JR Pass one of those is free.

Being one of the three top sceneries in Japan, the tori gate is a must visit. The pagoda on the island also anoth3r one should make a visit. If you want to feed the deer, they are always available on the island. And must try the oyster too.

Wow, it is a wonderful island outside of Hiroshima. You need a full day to explore the island. Spring and autumn are usually the best time to visit, but one could go any time of year and enjoy the serenity and beauty of the island. The ferry ride is short, but you can have beautiful views all around, and I wish you could take a long boat ride. You can spot Itsukushima tori /gate at the entrance to the island and mountains surrounding the island. The island has shrines and ancient buildings all around. If you start early, it is possible to hike and go to the viewpoint at the top and be back. Alternatively, you can take the cable car for a round trip. The view from the top is mesmerizing.

A great place to walk - or hike if that’s your thing - plenty of food and drink places. The deer are ‘Just there’ - somewhat domesticated waiting for scraps of food from people - PLEASE DON’T FEED THEM. A couple of interesting bars with very liberal ¥200 refil fees although you’ll be busy taking pictures rather than drinking 😀 The main temple is under redevelopment at the moment so is a bit messy. Of course, the Tori gate is one of the main sights, but easy to take pictures of from every angle. A nice little side trip from Hiroshima.

Found about this place from some internet research and it fit perfectly with our trip to Hiroshima starting from Kyoto. If you have a JR Pass, the Shinkansen train from Kyoto or any other where Shinkansen stops, a local train up to the ferry and the ferry are covered so you don't have to pay anything extra to get here. Local trains and ferries have a great schedule, you don't waste any time waiting. Once on the island it is a pleasure to take different routes and visit all the attractions. Of course the big torri gate in the water is the biggest attraction but there is so much more there. There are lots of souvenirs shops and some great restaurants and eateries. Oysters seem to be a local delicacy so if you are into seafood, be sure you try the grilled ones or deep fried. Not to the Nara level but there are lots of deer in the area. They are friendly and always looking for a treat but never forget they are wild animals and have unpredictable behavior. We were lucky to be there during some ritual, a group of japanese men dived in the water and then tried to get some decoration from a hanging over the water basket pulled by other men. The process was accompanied by some drumming. The island might not be on all tourists list but it is well worth visiting. In a shop found a picture of G7 leaders being here not long time ago so obviously it is a place you should see too.

The shrines here are amazing plus the friendly deer! During low tide you can actually walk out towards the Tori gate. I came here in September and the low tide was around 4pm.

You have to go! If you're in Hiroshima, you can't miss it. This place is one of the top 3 most beautiful places in Japan. The island is relaxing and has many cute shops where you can buy local crafts and souvenirs. In winter, try their grilled oysters, they are from Hiroshima and have a world-class taste!! Watch out for the deer on the island, treat them with respect, they are part of the nature here.

The island is very beautiful, with small backstreets, friendly people and some really cute shops. And of course the iconic tori, which is as impressive in person as it looks in photos. However, it was so busy! Definitely try to go early as it was almost difficult to move in some of the smaller alleys. The deer were very cute too.

Sadly the tori gate was still under renovation and covered (not expected to finish till December 2022), but I've waited 3 years to see it and will be returning to home country soon so I went. The shrine itself was beautiful over the water, and so many deer in the area. Though the "picture opportunity" to get the tori gate was a loss, the experience was still worth the effort to see it.

Nice Island. It takes 10' in a Ferry to get there from the JR station (not the one at the Peace Memorial but another one that 's 40' in tran from there), and it's included with the JR Pass. No need to get tickets in advance. The whole island can be visited in one or two hour. Recommended to go there in the afternoon to catch the sunset.

Definitely worth the trip one of the most iconic places you can visit in Japan. Plan on spending some time if you want to see the gates at high tide and low tide. At low tide the gates can be walked to and under. High tide it is the beautiful pictures you see all over the internet. There are plenty of shops to see and places to eat. Just be aware that many close around 530-600pm. Night viewing of the gate is great just don't come without food plans as many places will be closed. The popular local dish is oysters, they are prepared almost every way imaginable.

Beautiful place to visit. You can access the island using the ferry (works for JR Pass and Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass). Both high tide and low tide have their own charm. You will get better pictures (standing much closer to tori) during low tide, which is typically in the late morning around 10am to noon (in end-March). Be careful of the deer - they will do anything for food, even get aggressive.

It’s one of the most famous shrine in Japan. You can enjoy there only 300 yen. After tour in the precincts of the shrine, you must go to shopping streets. Many shops and restaurants serve their specialty.

The shrine that floats. Definitely a must visit because it’s so beautiful and there’s a lot of stuff to see and visit. Nearby there’s shopping street and shops that sells a lot of souvenirs and foods. The shrine itself is pretty crowded so make sure to visit very early as it can get to a very long queue as it reached noon. If you have the time, there’s also a small boat that can take you up to the gate for only 1000 yen/person

Sadly i just came here on the mid-day and it is raining! The advantage is: lesser people and explore like a boss. 1. It will be best if you can come in the morning or the mid-day and explore all the shrines here. 2 hours is not enough to stroll around Miyajima since so many location to spot and enjoy the calmness. 2. If you are from Hiroshima Memorial Park, and planning to take speed boat (near a cafe that sells oranges/tangerines), don't buy round ticket (4000 yen). I missed my return boat due my enjoyement in the island. Many exquisite building and delicious snack here and you will forgot the about the flow of time here.

Lovely ferry trip across to the Island. Easy flat walk out go the gate and temple. Good shops and places to eat, buy they do close at around 5 to 6pm. Watch out for the deer as they will try and steal anything you are holding. Sunset at the gate is spectacular.

The shrine shines like a star in the heart of the world visitors. One of the most iconic scene of Japanese image. You won't regret it if you see it for yourself in person. To feel the sacredness, better come off the rush hours - like early morning or late evening. Or you'll be overcrowded the tourists around the world.

We took the small boat from near the peace park and had an amazing experience! The sun was slowly setting when we were there and the atmosphere was amazing! Even Though it is a tourism spot, it was really calm and beautiful over there. And fun fact, dears are randomly walking around and are interested in food from you hahhaa

This was my 4th time visiting, but no matter I really enjoy visiting Itsukushima. Note to those planning a visit, the famous Floating Torigate is covered up for renovation. No set date when this will be completed, so check out their website for the latest info. We missed the Tori, so I used my awesome photoshop skills to crop one in! Bam - problem solved 😅

We were able to experience all tides for this shrine, which was amazing to witness. When we joined in the morning, we could walk directly to the shrine. In the afternoon, before we left, we could take pictures of it in the water. This has to be one of the top spots of Japan for magical moments and perfect pictures.

Very lucky to visit on a wonderful sunny day. A bit hot, but worth it. I was surprised as to how bold the deer are here. They will literally stick their nose in your bag and take food if you have it. 😂

Beautiful place to visit for a day. The shrine is beautiful. The whole island is worth exploring. The coffee ice cream was absolutely delicious. They now charge 100 yen even if you have the JR pass, but I think it is worth it to help preserve the place.

A great day out and definitely worth the visit despite the crowds. The shrine in the water is amazing to see but the highlight for me was the Daishoin Temple. It’s about a 10minute walk past the famous O-torii Gate, far less crowded and a real hidden gem with so much to see.

Not to be missed! Do check the high/low tide hours online, and visit as per your preference. I went after 4pm to see the shrine and the gate with the high tide. It was still very much crowded. Right after sunset, the place almost emptied and it was beautiful and peaceful until dusk.

Stunning views and a nice half day trip from Hiroshima. Definitely would have missed not coming here. Taking the JR Ferry is very simple. If you take the right JR Ferry and stand on the right side, you can also take some nice pictures if the Torii from the sea

It's as wonderful as you see in wallpapers. We visited both during lowtide (dusk) and high tide (daytime). It's a completely different experience! The water goes all the way to the shrine so the gate feels very far away. But at night, you can touch the gate if you really wanted. The nighttime view with the city as a background is awe inspiring.

Well worth the ferry ride over. There are deer on the island and many tourist shops and good food as well as the gate on the beach. Just before sunset on a clear day is a perfect time to come.

A beautiful place to visit You see the gate from the ferry and it is a short walk from the pier. The queue moves fairly quickly and movement around the shrine can be slow depending on the number of visitors. A must when visiting Miyajima Island.

A very beautiful shrine with a tori gate in the middle of the sea. The place is surreal and very beautiful, pictures dont do it justice. You need to go here personally to appreciate the beauty of it. You can take the nearest ferry near the island to get here cheaply.

Possibly the most famous Shinto shrine for tourists. Beautiful from all angles. At high tide it makes for great photos as it appears to float. At low tide you can see the entire structure. There's a shrine just near the main Tori Gate with ¥300 entrance fee, which has a pier to take photos of the Tori gate. It also has lots of deer everywhere which was a lovely surprise.

The ferry costs ¥200 one way and runs every 15 minutes from 5.50 am till 10.15 pm. It is advisable to stand on the right side of the ferry to get a good view of Torii Gate. You can sit inside AC hall or stand outside or on the top , if you prefer fresh sea breeze. The ride takes 10 minutes to reach the jetty of the Miyajima island.

There are 2 ferry service e between Miyajima-guchi and island. If you are holding JR Pass or one day Hiroshima Tabi Pass, you can ride any of the ferries to the island and back. The ferry is every 10 mins so no need to rush. Every visitor need to pay 100 yen tourist tax before boarding (only outbound to the island). Can buy from the ticket vending machine.

A 10-minute ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima from the terminal, covered by both the national and the regional JR passes (JR West). All visitors are expected to pay a one-time 100円 island admission fee, presumably for maintenance, at the terminal itself. The terminal could use some proper waiting areas for customers travelling by foot.

One way ticket is 200 Yen/p, return 400 Yen + 100 Yan TAX. Total return ticket price: 500 Yen/p.

Wonderful how this Ferry takes the JR Rail pass! You can also purchase tickets when you arrive. A short 3 minute straight walk from Miyajimaguchi station. Simply go through the underpass and continue walking straight. We arrived for the first ferry to the island which departed at 7:15. We got to the Ferry at 6:58 and it was already packed with people. We grabbed a couple last seats on the outside of the Ferry facing the side. At 7:06 they left because it was full. Granted, today is a Saturday so it may be more packed than usual. Short 10 minute ride to Miyajima island. Smooth ride, not too many waves and bumps. They have a toilet onboard and vending machines that sell drinks. Cars were on the bottom level.

Quite a short distance from Hiroshima Station to the Miyajimaguchi Station and then, a mere 10 minutes walk to this pier. With a JR Pass, the ferry ride would be for free. An interesting journey, with a long queue and entry into the ferry, in orderly manner. The upper deck of the ferry offers great views of the ferry terminal, of the Itsukushima Shrine. Excellent view of the Shrine, when we approached the Miyajima Island.

Very easy and cheap way to get across to miyajima island. Heaps of seats and rails to stand, does get busy during peak hours.

Ferry to Miyajima island. You can get here by tram or train from Hiroshima. About 10 minutes crossing to the island. All expected facilities on the boat. Just the job.

What a great hike up to the top, just make sure to have some water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Other than that great hike to do in about an hour. Also, reward yourself by going to the ropeway building and getting a beer and a snack.

Totally worth it. Consider that the trail is not flat and I can assure its longer than it is told on the signs (medium difficult). I recommend to take the ropeway on the way up and come down walking in the direction of Daishoin temple to spot several nice shrines and temples.

Nice hike after rope way. Moderate hike to peak. Great views of Hiroshima Bay. Bring a snack or ekiben and enjoy the views.

**Bring enough drinking water** as the water at the summit is spring water and they wrote that tap water at the viewing spot of the summit is not recommended for drinking. Also bring some snacks/ bento. Hiked up (1.5 hr from the ground level) and took ropeway down. Must go to the summit! There is a really nice view with a comfy seating spot to rest and snack while looking out at the beautiful view of the ocean (Shrine can't be seen due to the overgrowing big tree though, unfortunately.) Clean toilet

If you come to the island, you need to get yourself to the top of Mount Misen. There are shrines and incredible views from the observation deck.

Absolutely beautiful view from the top and an equally lovely hike. It is about 20-30 minutes to the top from the exit of the ropeway and there are a ton of stairs to get there. There is plenty of space to rest and take it all in once you make it to the top. The hike up and down is basically stairs the entire way (see photo) so it can be rough at times if you aren't used to walking stairs for 2-3 hours. Make sure you wear good shoes!

Gives a wonderful view over Hiroshima bay. There is a cable car or a hour walk to the top. Up there is a nice observatory where you can sit down with some temples etc.

Nice hike up to the top, and you'll be rewarded with an amazing view. You can see all over the surrounding sea up to the coast, with Hiroshima and a few other cities in the distance. Definitely worth the climb for the view alone. The walk does take a while though, so I hope you're in shape. Be aware that you may run into potentially deadly venomous snakes (Mamushi) here! I didn't see any, and looking at the amount of hikers there, they don't seem to be too common, but be warned.

Moderate hike up to the summit for an amazing view. Takes about 90 minutes to walk from the base. Clear signs guiding you along the way to the summit. The path along the way is well constructed so you don’t have to worry about have hiking equipment. At the summit there’s rest spots and vending machines for you to recharge. The scenery along the way is absolutely beautiful. Highly recommended to take the trek up the mont to enjoy the scenery and he view at the summit. Be sure to Time your trek up so you down miss the last cable car down to the base. Wouldn’t recommend trekking down when it’s sundown as the path isn’t very well lit.

Wonderful place, way less crowded than the Tori gate and the shrine in the water. Just a few minutes from the Tori gate and the shrine. A stairway to get to it. I would personally think that it is the most interesting site to visit on this side of the island (less crowded, more peaceful and the trail to Mt.Misen is really close). The best thing is that all of this is completely free! Goshuin available.

We visited it sharp at morning 8 am, its opening time. There were hardly anyone else, but all attractions were open. This is a must visit place after Hiroshima peace memorial, it calms you down and takes off the depression. Spend some quiet time alone here.

Too many people give this a miss, as it's a little off the main track and involves (easy) hill climbing. Don't, it's no problem to find with the simplest of tourist maps, and when you get there, there are a number of temples and shrines nestling amongst colourful pine trees and foliage. Some of the interiors are totally unique.

Amazing free temple with a lot to offer. It has the 500 disciples of Buddha (Gohyaku Rakan) and several other smaller side attractions. The gates to enter through have an interesting architecture. Once you climbed all the stairs you have a wonderful view of the temple and of Itsukushima including the sea! Toilets and WiFi if needed are also provided.

Gorgeous temple area, I would say this was my second favourite area in Miyajima island! Although most people go there to see the very famous torii-gate out in the water, I would say this temple is so beautiful. Definitely a must see👍

My favourite Japanese temple (and I've been to a few!!!) It's quite a big place with lots to see. A really beautiful setting. Free to enter and it wasn't very busy either.

One of the best buddhist temple I’ve visited in Japan! The many statues of buddhas present a very nice atmosphere and peace in the top temple is unlike any other place in Japan!

A VERY nice Buddhist temple perched on the side of a hill. The temple had a lot of things which one can indulge themselves in such as praying, ringing bells, and viewing the very cute jizo statues; some of which, were dressed. As an aside, it also offered a dashing view of Miyajima as the temple's location allows for a viewing of the island from a higher vantage point.

Daisho-in is one of the most important temples of Shingon Buddhism. It is located at the base of Mount Misen, on which the sect's founder, Kobo Daishi, first began the practice of Buddhism in Miyajima. Have a stroll in the complex, it’ll amaze you with its uniqueness! A must-see (in my eyes) when in Miyajima!

Such a beautiful temple, not to be missed if you are close by. Very short walk from Itsukushima shrine. Came here on a rainy Sunday and it was very calm, only a few other people around. One of the most beautiful temples I have seen with a lot of attractions. Very peaceful and spiritual.

Spectacular! Absolutely not to be missed. It can be reached via a staircase, but the side path characterized by the presence of statues is magical, not very visible but highly recommended. The upper temples are one more beautiful than the other and should be visited slowly (1.5/2 hours). From the entrance also starts laterally the path to go up to the upper temples along about 2.5 km, a very tiring path, a bit bumpy, full of steps, all uphill. During the summer it is very tiring, and therefore for those who want it is better to take the cable car, recommended only for those who want to make an excursion in the mountains (in case, bring lots of water).

Underrated temple. Had limited time on Miyajima and we were deciding if we should visit this temple or take the ropeway. This temple was super quaint we don’t regret.

A lovely Buddhist temple up a slight hill. Worth visiting as it is only 10 minutes away from the main street. You can visit the various shrines, see the many statues. Overall a very peaceful, calming, tranquil area. Would happily visit again.

Beautiful Buddhist temple right on top of a hill of Miyajima island. One of the prettiest temple I’ve seen. Also there were so many different parts of the temple that we could visit. It is also less crowded than Ikutsushima shrine so in my opinion a better place to visit when on Miyajima island. The little dark passage below the temple where we got to see the different versions of bodhisattva was more than surreal. Maybe not recommended for people who are claustrophobic.

To be honest, this was my number one temple complex we have visited during our stay in Japan. The complex offers so much diversity in altars, statues and places of worship in general. It has smaller temples, pagodes, caves, etc. The complex is situated on the mountain flank and is surrounded by nature. This place is even on my to-visit list for out next trip to Japan. Lots more to see, lots more to explore. Loved it here.

So many shrines along this path starting with Daishoin. Set on the often misty Mt. Modern, this shrine has a cave making it worth the brief walk up the hill.

This is the best Buddhist temple we have visited! So many figurines, lovely scenery and different things to see!

Good place for prays and a good walk. I recommend bringing a lot of coins for giving in it to the temple and for wishes .

Very beautiful shrine with a Buddhist pavilion next to it. The entry cost is cheap at ¥100, and it offers beautiful views of the mountains, town, and sea. It also contained a surprising amount of artwork in the ceilings.

Unfinished Senjokaku Pavilion built in 1587 is located on top of the small hill by Itsukushima shrine. The Samurai Shogun Hideyoshi Hidetomi passes away while building the place so the construction stopped since then and hasn’t resumed. The place may not look luxurious, but has its own simplicity and beauty. Because of location or JPY 100 admission fee, there is hardly anyone so meditating on veranda on sunny and warm day is possible. The place has many small secrets and they are fun to look for as well.

Very busy. Lots of happy school children,go early if at all possible. Interesting place, worth walking around to see the structure you've been standing on! No nails to hold it together....

Even during busy days there is no wait line here. Probably because you need to climb 95 steps to reach it 😜 A nice place to have a look around and also to take pictures from. Nice elevated position to take some pretty pictures. Since not many people walk up there and pay the fee it is a good place to get some more peaceful and quiet experience there.

It is a place where you can feel the coolness and history deeply.Unlike the name, there are not 1,000 tatami mats.The stairs are steep and wheelchair users cannot go. I think we can enjoy just sitting on the floor and relaxing. Personally, I recommend the most in miyajima.

The 1000 mat hall that is not actually a thousand mats big, but still very impressive and many say it is unfinished, but so beautiful as it is with its well used wooden floors that shine and reflect the surrounding nature - green in summer & golden ginko reflections in autumn are superb. Great vantage point to take in the pagoda next to it as well. Impressive Japanese bell, interesting paintings, exposed beams and giant shamoji good luck rice paddles around the pavillion. Can you find the lucky shapes in the wood repair too? *Easter eggs* I regularly do virtual tours on HeyGo and the visitors from around the world love this spot! A cool escape on hot or busy days when you can still see the 360 degree views of Miyajima island from a high vantage point. Recommend bringing your own bag for your shoes so you don't have to waste the single-use plastic bags they offer you to use while inside the pavillion.

Historical art on wooden plaques are suspended on the rafters, the sunlight streaming in betweenst the supporting pillars. The wooden pavilion is such a peaceful place to get away from the crowd, especially with the seafront views. Entry is ¥100pp for adults.

100 yen fee to enter, and no shoes allowed. Be careful in the colder months! Great views and perfect place to relax in the shade for a bit.

During a trip to Miyajima, I took a break here because it was so hot outside. Unlike in the past, 100 yen is required to enter the building, but going from the perspective of maintaining the facility, I feel it is not a problem. There is no air conditioning inside, but the breezes blow through, so it feels quite cool. Lying down inside is prohibited, but it was enough for me to lean against the wall and rest.

Also known as “pavilion of 1000 mats" or Hokoku Shrine. The name describes the spaciousness of the building, as Senjokaku is in fact approximately the size of 1000 tatami mats. The wooden structure itself is open with a beautiful view of the bay and island. To enter you just take your shoes off and pay ¥100.

Such a charming sight to see particularly around sunset when the crowd dies down. Peaceful and serene. Nice and clean again and paint job since renovation has left it all glistening again. Sunset photos best from the right hand side.

Absolutely impressive but definitely go early! It gets crazy busy around the gates and the sheer amount of people wanting to take photos gets up to be a little bit much. From a photography perspective, I would say go when the tide has come in a little bit as seeing the gates looking like they were floating on water is absolutely something amazing however, we were able to walk out to the gates and stand right underneath which was an experience and itself considering the magnitude! Such amazing energy all around the island and in this spot.

Actually an amazing sight, but be warned, the amount of people visiting must make this probably the most visited side in Japan after the A Bomb building in Hiroshima! The village next is full of super narrow streets, eateries all have long lines! But the visit to the temple is still something very special! Wort a special trip, make sure it’s done at high tide so that you enjoy the view of the gate riding out of the waters!

Itsukushima Jinja Otorii is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Japan and the symbol of Miyajima Island. Standing around 200m in front of Itsukushima Shine, visitors can see the torii floating in the sea during high tide. Alternatively, during low tide, visitors can walk to the bottom of the torii and it looks huge when standing below it. The tide has a 12-hour cycle, If you time it right, you can see the view of the torii in both high and low tide. Both views are unique and I recommend seeing both if you are there. Please note that the torii has been under repair work since 2019 and only reopened recentlyin Dec 2022, thus it is a good time to give it a visit.

Crowded but cool! Worth a visit if you’re in Hiroshima. I’d spend an entire day on the island in addition to seeing this and the temple. Go in the early morning to avoid the large crowds that gather around noon time.

A beautiful shrine with the famous Torri gate. The shrine sits on the ocean so during various heights of tide, one can get a different feel and view of the site. Overall, this is a good place to visit with lots of food stalls and shops along the path from the pier.

Awesome day trip it's worth to go and see the town and also to climb the mountain while your here. The Shrine is awesome to see in the evening when it's low tide. You are able to walk right up to the shrine, the water is so clean and clear as well. Careful of the the deer as they seem to be attracted to people with bags. They are very friendly and are not super aggressive like the ones in Nara.

Such a cool and pretty structure located right on the coast. Depending on what time you visit, you can even walk out to it. That was around 4pm in the afternoon. And there were many people walking out to the gate. In the morning, you can see people kayaking around it. It is very peaceful and serene. There are a lot of food stalls around and cafes. The beach is very clean and everyone picks up their garbage. Lots of deer are running around but they seemed pretty docile. It is also viewable from the ferry ride.

It's a temple by the sea and it is affected by the low and high tide. It's nice, cute, very red... and with quite a few tourists. There's an entrance fee to the Shrine (unlike Torii, which you can enjoy for free). There is many wild deers in the island. The trip by boat to the Miyajima Island is quite fun also!

What an amazing sight to behold. It looks as if the torii gate is floating on water during high tide. The torii is made of camphor wood which is durable and resistant to rot. During low tide you could get up close and touch a piece of history. You should plan your trip around the tides.

One of the iconic shrines of Japan. It's amazing to see the tide effect and even walk to the shrine when is low tide. You can see and caress the deer while working to the shrine and also feel the lovely sea and sand.

The island is lovely especially during October it's not as packed but the weather is still nice. The deer are also very friendly and will occasionally walk up to people. The island is beautiful and there is a lot to see. Highly recommended!

We had a lovely time here. It was quite a travel from Kobe from where we were staying but we managed to get there by 12-1pm and enjoyed the rest of the day. However the place is absolutely stunning specially when the sun is about to set. Iconic and very symbolic of Japan.

One of the most extraordinary torii gates in Japan. A trip to Hiroshima wouldn’t be complete without a quick visit to Miyajima island to see this floating Ikutsushima Shrine. It can get a bit crowded around the shrine. However there are so many angles where one could take nice photos of the floating gate. In my opinion, there is no need to get tickets to go inside the shrine if your purpose is just to see the floating shrine. There are plenty of good places to view the shrine. For eg: the ferry, on the beach or even from the viewpoints next to the Ikutsushima temple. My favorite is walking up towards the shrine on the beach and getting my foot wet. It’s magical.

Stunning views! Came here for low and high tide, as well as sunrise and sunset. Each was amazing, but sunset was definitely special.

I didnt go all the way to the ropeway since I had done that before but still revisited the park since I had a time to stroll around and it was peaceful.

Momijidani Park is a beautiful park that is more suitable to descript as a hiking trail. It features Japanese-style wooden bridges, a small shrine and fish pond. The path is clean and well-maintained. It takes around 15-20 minutes to walk from Itsukushima Jinja which is not long. It is recommended to come especially during autumn when the maple turns red. If you want to go to the Momijidani Station, other than taking the shuttle bus, choosing to go through this park may also be a good option.

A nice park to stroll around, ‘play’ with deers, watch some koi fish in ponds and enjoy the surroundings!

Beautiful maple leaf valley park is stunning at any time of year. Wander through the beautifully maintained paths under gorgeous trees beautiful at any time of year. Beautiful stream running through. A popular route up to Mt.Misen that takes anywhere from 1-2 hours of stair climbing. Wild deer are in the park. Interesting small shrines and tea shops offering light meals too. Picnic areas, public toilets here but no water fountains to refill water bottles needs to be reconsidered especially in hot months. A water bottle refill station at a few areas would help reduce waste and improve health as well as comfort of visitors and hikers.

Wonderful half day trip in Hiroshima. Beautiful park. Plenty of food and souvenir options. Lots of deer. Highly recommend visiting this attractive and fresh air spot.

Beautiful park, even in the middle of winter. I can only imagine how nice this is in the middle of spring, or even better, during autumn when the maples are changing color. Beautiful way to end your day if you’ve done Mt. Misen and are taking the ropeway

Beautiful park with a river running through it, it was flowing quite well while we were here, its very beautiful. There are deer roaming around too, they are not scared of people and will walk right up to you! There are heaps of picnic tables as well. It's a nice walk through the park to the ropeway station.

Fourth time I'm here to catch the beautiful autumn foliage. Come in early morning or late afternoon to catch the sunlight. Would recommend at least an hour walking n taking in the autumn foliage.

Most people visit Miyajima for the famous shrine but the island has much to offer. There is a nice little aquarium to entertain the kids where species local to the waters are exhibited. They have porpoises, penguins and octopuses. There is also a small experiential pool for touching starfish but of course, water is cold in winter.

I had the opportunity to see different types of fish here. I wanted to see a dolphin dance. But I didn't have enough time. Although I was a foreign tourist, I had a lot of fun with my Japanese friends.

Definitely worth a visit if you're on the island! Very cute aquarium, and even though it's small, there's still a lot to see. I'd recommend spending 2-2.5 hours here and timing your visit around a show! We were able to see the Penguin photo op, Sea Lion show and the large tank feeding. The gift shop also has some really cute options.

It does cost to get in. I assumed public ment it was free lol. But one of the better ones we have been to so far. My kid loved it. Was pretty cool to see how they farm oysters. Well laid out and everything was pretty active and moving around which kept it exciting.

Good experience here. Some good animals, sea lion, penguin, otter, jellyfish etc. I got to participate in the penquin encounter and pet a penguin. A visit to the aquarium is a good activity to fill in an afternoon, but most probably wouldn't spend more than two hours here. I generally agree with some of the other commentators that the enclosures were a bit small, though.

A nice small-scale aquarium with a lot of information about local species. But seeing some mammals and big fishes in cages too narrow for them can be painful to watch. Beautiful surroundings.

The aquarium had very unique and interesting exhibits. Some of the enclosures felt small despite being well designed. The cafe was a fun place to stop for a snack break. There is a Dr. Fish area but it's hands only due to COVID restrictions.

Nice aquarium very clean worth visiting good displays. I was disappointed with the finless porpoise tank just a bare blue tank, and there was a lone finless porpoise in a separate tank not on display which seemed way too small. The giant octopus tank was about the same size as the octopus which is a shame. Animals seem well cared for clean tanks lots of cover and things to do . Otters seemed a little bored. There was a show which I can’t comment on as I’m not a fan of shows in aquariums.

Nice little public aquarium with some unique exhibits. They have porpoises and sea lions in very bland, small tanks, and they are clearly bored sadly. They also have a touch-pool, which are horrible. Kids jabbing and poking sea life.

One of the best aquariums we visited in Japan. Absolute must see if you’re in Miyajima. October 2023 Tickets: Adults 1,420 yen and children 400 yen. Souvenir shop and restaurant available. The displays were large and beautiful. Most of the animals seemed to be happy and healthy despite captivity. Restrooms were clean and offered traditional toilets and western toilets. Child changing areas and nursing areas available. Mostly handicap friendly with elevators and ramps throughout the facility. Air conditioned.

Not one a place that I would visit. Can be useful for school children to learn about marine life, but for tourists this is not an exciting display.

Quite disturbing seeing the horrific conditions the animals were kept in. Bland, sterile tanks which were clearly much too small. The mammals have numerous injuries, likely suffered as a result of the poor conditions. Even most of the fish and other sea life were just in little boxes, without even enough room to swim around a bit. The octopus enclosure was little bigger than a breadbox, painted plain blue and only contained a few pots the octopuses were hiding in. There was little information about animal habitats or conservation, just a few facts about each creature presented only in Japanese. Really regret paying an entry fee here, as it's nothing short of supporting animal abuse.

It might be a small aquarium in an island, and compared to other aquariums you would say it’s lack luster, but the Miyajima public aquarium has its own charm. It has lots of variety of sea creatures to look at and also shows are excellent and definitely worth the time to look into. Make sure to check the daily schedule of shows and events happening in the aquarium by picking up a pamphlet at the entrance(english is available)

We were very impressed with this aquarium. The tanks on display were numerous and very well presented. The animals are all well cared for. They have shows and presentations at different times of the day, which is obtained via a leaflet at the entrance and also announced via PA. This is one of the very best aquariums we have seen. We highly recommend visiting. Prices are great. Aud $15 per adult. Less for children. It cost less than aud $50 for a family of four. Note that credit cards are not able to be used for purchasing tickets at this time. (not sure about the shop).

In comparison to other Japanese aquariums way too expensive. For European standards especially the sea lions, penguins and whales have too little space. If you take a closer look you can see wounds on the sea lions due to bumping into stuff while swimming speedily. The other fish however are kept in better tanks than in other aquariums and it's wonderful to especially look at the raft tank.

The island is absolutely breathtaking! It really felt like something out of a post card! The views around the island of the bay and other islands is so picturesque and you won't regret visiting! Plus it's free with a JR pass! There are also lovely deer running around the park who are quite friendly!

My itinerary was really packed and wasn't sure that I should add this in but I'm so glad that I did! The ferry was a very pleasant process and had great views of the Tori from the boat. The island was beautiful. I enjoyed the leaf shaped cakes and oysters. The deer were a delightful.

The island is known for the shrine, but the little town and beautiful nature is what makes it really special. Its beautiful. Tourist oriented, but not too tacky. Take the cable car up the mountain. Hike the extra mile to the top. Then come down and cool your feet in the cold mountain spring that flows through town. An amazing experience.

One of my favorite places to visit in Japan. This is a beautiful island filled with history and great food. From the temples, shrines, deer, food, and hikes, this island has much to do. I recommend going during the fall to see the beautiful colors of the leaves changing.

Your trip to Hiroshima is not completed without a visit to Itsukushima island. As shared by many other travelers..it’s a very special island that offer many unique experiences. I recommend to stay until the evening…the scenery is mesmerizing. We were very fortunate be there for a spectacular fireworks show as well. This is a very memorable place for us!

This island is great There is a lot to see and do here, you can stay and spend a night as well, there are a few hotels and accommodation in the area. There are ferrys ⛴️ that runs every 20 min and if you got the JR Pass one of those is free.

Wow, it is a wonderful island outside of Hiroshima. You need a full day to explore the island. Spring and autumn are usually the best time to visit, but one could go any time of year and enjoy the serenity and beauty of the island. The ferry ride is short, but you can have beautiful views all around, and I wish you could take a long boat ride. You can spot Itsukushima tori /gate at the entrance to the island and mountains surrounding the island. The island has shrines and ancient buildings all around. If you start early, it is possible to hike and go to the viewpoint at the top and be back. Alternatively, you can take the cable car for a round trip. The view from the top is mesmerizing.

A great place to walk - or hike if that’s your thing - plenty of food and drink places. The deer are ‘Just there’ - somewhat domesticated waiting for scraps of food from people - PLEASE DON’T FEED THEM. A couple of interesting bars with very liberal ¥200 refil fees although you’ll be busy taking pictures rather than drinking 😀 The main temple is under redevelopment at the moment so is a bit messy. Of course, the Tori gate is one of the main sights, but easy to take pictures of from every angle. A nice little side trip from Hiroshima.

Found about this place from some internet research and it fit perfectly with our trip to Hiroshima starting from Kyoto. If you have a JR Pass, the Shinkansen train from Kyoto or any other where Shinkansen stops, a local train up to the ferry and the ferry are covered so you don't have to pay anything extra to get here. Local trains and ferries have a great schedule, you don't waste any time waiting. Once on the island it is a pleasure to take different routes and visit all the attractions. Of course the big torri gate in the water is the biggest attraction but there is so much more there. There are lots of souvenirs shops and some great restaurants and eateries. Oysters seem to be a local delicacy so if you are into seafood, be sure you try the grilled ones or deep fried. Not to the Nara level but there are lots of deer in the area. They are friendly and always looking for a treat but never forget they are wild animals and have unpredictable behavior. We were lucky to be there during some ritual, a group of japanese men dived in the water and then tried to get some decoration from a hanging over the water basket pulled by other men. The process was accompanied by some drumming. The island might not be on all tourists list but it is well worth visiting. In a shop found a picture of G7 leaders being here not long time ago so obviously it is a place you should see too.

The shrines here are amazing plus the friendly deer! During low tide you can actually walk out towards the Tori gate. I came here in September and the low tide was around 4pm.

The island is very beautiful, with small backstreets, friendly people and some really cute shops. And of course the iconic tori, which is as impressive in person as it looks in photos. However, it was so busy! Definitely try to go early as it was almost difficult to move in some of the smaller alleys. The deer were very cute too.

The ferry costs ¥200 one way and runs every 15 minutes from 5.50 am till 10.15 pm. It is advisable to stand on the right side of the ferry to get a good view of Torii Gate. You can sit inside AC hall or stand outside or on the top , if you prefer fresh sea breeze. The ride takes 10 minutes to reach the jetty of the Miyajima island.

IC Card friendly, after you alight, tap at the reader at the ferry terminal exit. Approx. 180yen one way.

There are 2 ferry service e between Miyajima-guchi and island. If you are holding JR Pass or one day Hiroshima Tabi Pass, you can ride any of the ferries to the island and back. The ferry is every 10 mins so no need to rush. Every visitor need to pay 100 yen tourist tax before boarding (only outbound to the island). Can buy from the ticket vending machine.

A 10-minute ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima from the terminal, covered by both the national and the regional JR passes (JR West). All visitors are expected to pay a one-time 100円 island admission fee, presumably for maintenance, at the terminal itself. Wonderful how this Ferry takes the JR Rail pass! You can also purchase tickets when you arrive. A short 3 minute straight walk from Miyajimaguchi station. Simply go through the underpass and continue walking straight. We arrived for the first ferry to the island which departed at 7:15. We got to the Ferry at 6:58 and it was already packed with people. We grabbed a couple last seats on the outside of the Ferry facing the side. At 7:06 they left because it was full. Granted, today is a Saturday so it may be more packed than usual. Short 10 minute ride to Miyajima island. Smooth ride, not too many waves and bumps. They have a toilet onboard and vending machines that sell drinks. Cars were on the bottom level.

Quite a short distance from Hiroshima Station to the Miyajimaguchi Station and then, a mere 10 minutes walk to this pier. With a JR Pass, the ferry ride would be for free. An interesting journey, with a long queue and entry into the ferry, in orderly manner. The upper deck of the ferry offers great views of the ferry terminal, of the Itsukushima Shrine. Excellent view of the Shrine, when we approached the Miyajima Island.

Very easy and cheap way to get across to miyajima island. Heaps of seats and rails to stand, does get busy during peak hours.

Ferry to Miyajima island. You can get here by tram or train from Hiroshima. About 10 minutes crossing to the island. All expected facilities on the boat. Just the job.

Sadly the tori gate was still under renovation and covered (not expected to finish till December 2022), but I've waited 3 years to see it and will be returning to home country soon so I went. The shrine itself was beautiful over the water, and so many deer in the area. Though the "picture opportunity" to get the tori gate was a loss, the experience was still worth the effort to see it.

Nice Island. It takes 10' in a Ferry to get there from the JR station (not the one at the Peace Memorial but another one that 's 40' in tran from there), and it's included with the JR Pass. No need to get tickets in advance. The whole island can be visited in one or two hour. Recommended to go there in the afternoon to catch the sunset.

Definitely worth the trip one of the most iconic places you can visit in Japan. Plan on spending some time if you want to see the gates at high tide and low tide. At low tide the gates can be walked to and under. High tide it is the beautiful pictures you see all over the internet. There are plenty of shops to see and places to eat. Just be aware that many close around 530-600pm. Night viewing of the gate is great just don't come without food plans as many places will be closed. The popular local dish is oysters, they are prepared almost every way imaginable.

Beautiful place to visit. You can access the island using the ferry (works for JR Pass and Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass). Both high tide and low tide have their own charm. You will get better pictures (standing much closer to tori) during low tide, which is typically in the late morning around 10am to noon (in end-March). Be careful of the deer - they will do anything for food, even get aggressive.

It’s one of the most famous shrine in Japan. You can enjoy there only 300 yen. After tour in the precincts of the shrine, you must go to shopping streets. Many shops and restaurants serve their specialty.

The shrine that floats. Definitely a must visit because it’s so beautiful and there’s a lot of stuff to see and visit. Nearby there’s shopping street and shops that sells a lot of souvenirs and foods. The shrine itself is pretty crowded so make sure to visit very early as it can get to a very long queue as it reached noon. If you have the time, there’s also a small boat that can take you up to the gate for only 1000 yen/person

Sadly i just came here on the mid-day and it is raining! The advantage is: lesser people and explore like a boss. 1. It will be best if you can come in the morning or the mid-day and explore all the shrines here. 2 hours is not enough to stroll around Miyajima since so many location to spot and enjoy the calmness. 2. If you are from Hiroshima Memorial Park, and planning to take speed boat (near a cafe that sells oranges/tangerines), don't buy round ticket (4000 yen). I missed my return boat due my enjoyement in the island. Many exquisite building and delicious snack here and you will forgot the about the flow of time here.

Lovely ferry trip across to the Island. Easy flat walk out go the gate and temple. Good shops and places to eat, buy they do close at around 5 to 6pm. Watch out for the deer as they will try and steal anything you are holding. Sunset at the gate is spectacular.

The shrine shines like a star in the heart of the world visitors. One of the most iconic scene of Japanese image. You won't regret it if you see it for yourself in person. To feel the sacredness, better come off the rush hours - like early morning or late evening. Or you'll be overcrowded the tourists around the world.

We took the small boat from near the peace park and had an amazing experience! The sun was slowly setting when we were there and the atmosphere was amazing! Even Though it is a tourism spot, it was really calm and beautiful over there. And fun fact, dears are randomly walking around and are interested in food from you hahhaa

This was my 4th time visiting, but no matter I really enjoy visiting Itsukushima. Note to those planning a visit, the famous Floating Torigate is covered up for renovation. No set date when this will be completed, so check out their website for the latest info. We missed the Tori, so I used my awesome photoshop skills to crop one in! Bam - problem solved 😅

We were able to experience all tides for this shrine, which was amazing to witness. When we joined in the morning, we could walk directly to the shrine. In the afternoon, before we left, we could take pictures of it in the water. This has to be one of the top spots of Japan for magical moments and perfect pictures.

Very lucky to visit on a wonderful sunny day. A bit hot, but worth it. I was surprised as to how bold the deer are here. They will literally stick their nose in your bag and take food if you have it. 😂

Beautiful place to visit for a day. The shrine is beautiful. The whole island is worth exploring. The coffee ice cream was absolutely delicious. They now charge 100 yen even if you have the JR pass, but I think it is worth it to help preserve the place.

A great day out and definitely worth the visit despite the crowds. The shrine in the water is amazing to see but the highlight for me was the Daishoin Temple. It’s about a 10minute walk past the famous O-torii Gate, far less crowded and a real hidden gem with so much to see.

Not to be missed! Do check the high/low tide hours online, and visit as per your preference. I went after 4pm to see the shrine and the gate with the high tide. It was still very much crowded. Right after sunset, the place almost emptied and it was beautiful and peaceful until dusk.

Stunning views and a nice half day trip from Hiroshima. Definitely would have missed not coming here. Taking the JR Ferry is very simple. If you take the right JR Ferry and stand on the right side, you can also take some nice pictures if the Torii from the sea

It's as wonderful as you see in wallpapers. We visited both during lowtide (dusk) and high tide (daytime). It's a completely different experience! The water goes all the way to the shrine so the gate feels very far away. But at night, you can touch the gate if you really wanted. The nighttime view with the city as a background is awe inspiring.

Well worth the ferry ride over. There are deer on the island and many tourist shops and good food as well as the gate on the beach. Just before sunset on a clear day is a perfect time to come.

A very beautiful shrine with a tori gate in the middle of the sea. The place is surreal and very beautiful, pictures dont do it justice. You need to go here personally to appreciate the beauty of it. You can take the nearest ferry near the island to get here cheaply.

Possibly the most famous Shinto shrine for tourists. Beautiful from all angles. At high tide it makes for great photos as it appears to float. At low tide you can see the entire structure. There's a shrine just near the main Tori Gate with ¥300 entrance fee, which has a pier to take photos of the Tori gate. It also has lots of deer everywhere which was a lovely surprise.

The island is absolutely breathtaking! It really felt like something out of a post card! The views around the island of the bay and other islands is so picturesque and you won't regret visiting! Plus it's free with a JR pass! There are also lovely deer running around the park who are quite friendly!

My itinerary was really packed and wasn't sure that I should add this in but I'm so glad that I did! The ferry was a very pleasant process and had great views of the Tori from the boat. The island was beautiful. I enjoyed the leaf shaped cakes and oysters. The deer were a delightful.

The island is known for the shrine, but the little town and beautiful nature is what makes it really special. Its beautiful. Tourist oriented, but not too tacky. Take the cable car up the mountain. Hike the extra mile to the top. Then come down and cool your feet in the cold mountain spring that flows through town. An amazing experience.

One of my favorite places to visit in Japan. This is a beautiful island filled with history and great food. From the temples, shrines, deer, food, and hikes, this island has much to do. I recommend going during the fall to see the beautiful colors of the leaves changing.
