Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.

Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Anthony Hughes — Google review
Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

Shibata Castle Ruins, a flatland-style castle situated in the heart of the city, is a well-preserved piece of Japanese history that can be visited seasonally. Despite being one of Japan's smaller castles, its informative staff offers free admission and guided tours of the castle grounds. Although it only takes 15-20 minutes to explore this small but quaint attraction, it may not be as impressive as other competing sites in the area.
This is the famous castle in Niigata. Its a bit small compared to other castles in Japan but it is still nice thou. There is no entrance fee and the staff are really nice. You can see three separate mini castles when you go inside

My base soccer stadium in Niigata. Albirex Niigata’s home ground. It has built with ample of space. Bringing glass bottles and canned drinks are prohibited. Bringing foods are accepted. Food sold there is not recommended, if you must eat, buy them before the game starts as the don’t have any heating elements they get cold as the time goes on. Also, if you buy drinks, return the cups you’ll get 100 yen deposit back. Enjoy the game!!

The Northern Culture Museum is a must-visit destination in Niigata, featuring a wooden mansion from the Edo period that houses exquisite art collections and gardens renowned for their wisteria blooms during late spring. This hidden gem offers visitors an opportunity to experience the rich culture of landowners throughout every season, with well-presented traditional houses, artifacts, gardens, and informative displays on Japanese history. A lovely piece of Niigata culture just north of Niigata city.
The entire location pays homage to a previous age, from the rice storage and traditional kitchens, to the expansive tatami rooms rich with history, to the well-tended wisteria gardens that flourish in late spring, this Northern Culture Museum is an education in traditional Japanese cultural practice. Even in winter, the main garden was spectacular, but if you want to see incomparable beauty, I would recommend mid-autumn or during the spring when there are cherry blossoms, but just exploring the grounds and many rooms in the museum was an edifying and satisfying experience.

A stretch located in Niigata where all the wineries are concentrated. It’s a pity that when we visit, the season is already over for grapes and all we see is fruitless vines.

There was a flower exhibition when I visited. So there was a whole bunch of flowers on display. The shrine itself is decently large and even had an animal pen with deers in there! The shrine is surrounded by lush greenery and exudes calm and soothing peacefulness. It is however quite out of the way to visit as it requires a few train changes and limited ways of leaving. Making the trip a day commitment. But it was well worth it for me!

Go to Yahiko station and then walk about 20 minutes according to the available signs.
Yahiko station is an old station, still retains the old architecture and does not have an automatic card check counter. There will be staff to check train tickets.
There is also a treasure that is a 2.3m long sword called Shida no Otachi, the longest sword and included in the list of Cultural Property of Japan.
In particular, in the temple grounds there are two stones called "Hi no tama ishi" (火の玉石) which means "stone of fireballs", or commonly known as "Omokaru no ishi" (重) 軽の石) means "light heavy stone". It is said that when standing in front of these two stones, pray, then if you lift the stone and it feels light, your wish will come true, but if it is heavy, the wish will not come true.

Came here by car. Easy to get to. Huge parking space, easy access. The shrine is big and really nice to visit, the personnel (mikos) friendly and helpful. Just don't expect English. Japanese is required, however broken it may be. There's also a tourist district which we took a wide berth around because I don't trust these kinds of places in general.
Anyway I wanted to buy Omamori and the miko was nice and patient enough to explain to me what the difference between them was.
We came back two days later by train. More of a pain, but still doable. Also the train station looks amazing. They're really trying to sell the whole shrine asthetic.

The temperature was 10 degrees Celsius with occasional light rain, so an older man in his 50s wearing sneakers, jeans, and a folding umbrella could easily climb the mountain, but the view at the top was beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
However, I was sweating from climbing the stairs for most of the 75 minutes, and even though I changed clothes at the top, I was completely cold when the climb became easier.
Although the mountain trail is not slippery, I was scared to go down, so I took the ropeway down.
The mountain trail is in excellent condition, but we recommend shoes with sturdy soles rather than sneakers.
Lack of exercise like me can take its toll, so the hot springs I went to afterwards felt really good.

The path is wide and looks more like a shrine approach than a mountain trail. In fact, there is the Okumiya of Yahiko Shrine at the top. The trail is laid out like stairs from beginning to end, making it easy to climb.
We took a break to eat on the way and reached the top in about 1 hour and 50 minutes.
There are great views in some places, and from the top you can see Sado across the Sea of Japan.
The descent takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
It's easy for people with small children to climb up here and there, but some parts are slippery, so it's best to wear proper shoes.

Nagaoka is a city on Japan’s main Honshu Island. In the center, near the Shinano River, the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art has 20th-century Japanese works and a sculpture garden. Niigata Prefectural Museum of History exhibits prehistoric Jōmon pottery. North of the city, the grand Yahiko Shrine sits at the foot of Mount Yahiko. A cable car ascends to the peak. Southeast are the hot springs of Yomogihira.
Echigo Hillside Park is a scenic national park that offers visitors a variety of activities throughout the year. During the summer months, families can enjoy a lively water park and various play areas for children, including an indoor play area. The park also boasts stunning gardens and plenty of space for walking and picnicking. In winter, visitors can engage in snow sports before retreating to the indoor play area.
Decided to drop by the park on route from Tokamachi to Niigata City. Glad we did it as Echigo hillside Park was a really beautiful and spacious park, you can easily spend half a day there. Many variants, including award winning roses. Caught a water show and was pleasantly surprised with sound track used.

I enjoyed it best in summer because my son loves the water play area, the bounce cloud, the childrens play area, the indoor play area..... Soooo much to do for children! And beautiful gardens too! We can spend the whole day and not get bored. We can take our own food or easily buy food there. Winter is fun too but not so much to do but it's nice to play in the snow and then go to the indoor play area.

What a great park for families to spend the day. Full of places to explore, the park has magnificent displays of seasonal flowers and plenty of areas with activities. The tent area where families can relax and spend the day in their own tent is one of the more progressive things I have seen living in Japan. Worth the visit!

A good place to walk by yourself, family, friends and couple. But it’s too hot to visit this place in summer.
The rose garden is beautiful and the food quality of Rose cafe is good. I recommended Momo soda in summer, strawberries soda is not very good in this season.
You can go to the park and have fun with friends or family members.

Two Lover's Point is a picturesque location situated on a cliff by the Sea of Japan. It is a popular spot for couples to hang love plates, ring bells, and admire the stunning sunset views. Most of the lovers in Joetsu and Kashiwazaki have probably been to this cape. I took my dog there for the first time in about 20 years, and there was a nice seasonal breeze. There were just families and group travelers.
The bell of the cape is the main attraction, but there is also a walking road, so it is very pleasant to walk for a while. The trees are rustling in the sea breeze from spring to summer.
However, a walk on a rough sea day is just training. It's important to be able to laugh with each other because the atmosphere might get worse in the car on the way home.

Saifuku-ji is an ancient Buddhist temple that dates back to 1534. It is renowned for its exquisite and intricate wood carvings, particularly in the Kaisando annex, which features a stunningly detailed ceiling. The main temple and gardens are also noteworthy attractions. Visitors must pay an entrance fee of 500 yen to explore the temple's interior, where they can marvel at the beautiful wooden roof and admire Japanese-style depictions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Stunning. The main temple and gardens on their own would be worth a visit, but the carvings on the ceiling of the Kaisando annex are simply breathtaking. Amazing details and colors. If you are bringing a vehicle, please fill out the application form and bring it to the reception desk. If you are only a customer, there is an automatic ticket office located a little away from the counter, which is convenient.

If there is anything you do not understand, please ask a staff member.

Compared to Niigata Port, there were fewer employees, and it felt lonely, probably because there were fewer passengers.
Additionally, the ships cruising the route between Naoetsu and Ogi seem to be smaller than those between Niigata and Ryotsu, and they are more likely to be canceled if the weather gets bad.

The vessel is the 2,483-ton Koganemaru, which is one size smaller than the huge car ferries that run on the Niigata-Otaru route, and as a result is susceptible to waves and winds. I've seen many people get seasick even when the waves are about 1m high, so if you're prone to motion sickness, you'll need to take motion sickness medication. Also, this ferry does not have a cafeteria shop, so you must bring your own food and drinks (there are vending machines for bread and sweets, juice and cup noodles).
The port is small and has a restaurant, waiting room, and ticket office. The vehicle waiting area is also easily visible in the space on the east side of the facility. There are souvenir shops and other shops, but they are not open when the first train leaves (7am). The dining room is open, so you can eat some food before boarding the ship.

Beautiful in spring or early summer when field fill with water
Ozegahara is a high-altitude wetland situated in a national park, comprising various plant species and hiking trails. The area features a flat wooden walkway that leads to the Toden hut, offering refreshing views of the surrounding ponds. Skunk cabbage is among the notable plant species found in this marshland, and autumn presents an excellent opportunity to witness foliage transformation.
Visited in mid July.
The weather was great in the morning.
Temperature quite high, refreshing breeze in the mountain trail with lot’s of trees but not cold.
The hike was fun, trail is not difficult, beginner level.
Depending how far you want to go, running/walking shoes are okay.
Be careful of slippery wood pathway when wet.
Bring your water and snacks, the rest area’s foods & drinks are slightly expensive but still acceptable, good portion & okay taste.
In the afternoon it rained a lot! It was pouring hard, luckily we were back to the starting point just in time. Apparently, weather can change drastically in mountain so it is good to be prepared for sudden rain.
Very fun. Would like to come back in different seasons.

Walkway across Ozegahara in Oze National Park, Japan,
Ozegahara, a sprawling area of marshes and moorland, is the green heart of Oze National Park. This large nature reserve spreads out over four prefectures in central Japan, and the Oze marshland in Gunma Prefecture is shadowed by Mount Shibutsu, seen in our image. Also featured are some of the park's sinuous wooden walkways stretching across waterlogged terrain. There are miles of these boardwalks, allowing for easy trekking around the park. They also shield much of the delicate ecosystem from too much foot-traffic—basically, they keep feet dry and plants untrammeled.
The high-altitude park is home to a number of beautiful alpine flowers, including the Asian skunk cabbage, which blooms after the last snows melt, and is much prettier than its name might suggest.

There is a vast prairie waiting for me that cannot be expressed in photos or paintings. The vast and calm scenery took my breath away. The wetland that stretches beyond the wooden planks and the mountains and sky in the distance. I will take a photo. The chirping of birds and frogs, the sound of the wind blowing across your body, even though you can't see them, they certainly create a space that seems to embrace all of Ozegahara🌱
The skunk cabbage blooming powerfully in the flowing water is beautiful😃The best time to see skunk cabbage is from late May to early June❗
It had rained the day before, so it was a little muddy, but it wasn't a problem for walking.
On sunny days, you will be exposed to the sun for many hours, so if you don't want to get sunburned, sun protection is a must 💪
The road to Sanjo Falls is quite steep. I had the impression that it was for people who have good physical strength😃

Iwappara Ski Resort offers a variety of slopes suitable for all skill levels, with ski lifts and a designated kids' play area available. The resort also provides equipment rentals and dining facilities. If arriving by car, there are numerous parking lots at the entrance. The snow park is very large and ideal for sledging and playing in the snow. However, the parking areas can be disorganized, and some restaurants may close early in the afternoon, so visitors are advised to plan their day accordingly.
If you are a beginner, this is a place for you. The terrain is flat and broad. Booked a 2 hour lesson from klook (SGD 190++ for 4 person). Can't believe we know how to ski after the 2 hour lesson!

One of the good choices when visiting Yuzawa by car: lots of parking lots right on the entrance. We came with our two years old daughter and the kids snow park is huuuge for sledges as well as playing in the snow. One star less because of the chaotic parking areas and no food in whatsoever restaurant after 3pm. Hence better be early and plan your day in the snow well!

One of the best skiing areas I have been in Japan. There are a variety of different ski lifts to go for different levels of difficulty. The highest peak closes at around 4:30pm which is a safe thing as during winter it gets dark rather early. However, if you still want to ski during the night there is also a night time area where you could ski well into The night. If you choose to go there be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and gloves and they tend to freeze, yes, freeze as the snow melts on your gloves and freezes again.
You can choose to live in one of the few hotels that are on The mountainside (1/4 up The mountain I think) where they provide Japanese style living quarters with public bathrooms and onsen (little small) as well as catering (small portions for those who are used to western portions).
On a good day with clear weather the view is simply stunning. And is worth every penny and minute getting there.

The Echigo Sake Museum Ponshukan is a unique sake tasting bar located inside JR Echigo Yuzawa. This unconventional establishment features coin-operated dispensers offering a vast variety of sake, as well as rice balls and local souvenirs. The shop is easily recognizable by its mascot, a large drunken figure lying in front. Visitors are provided with tasting cups upon entry and can also enjoy delicious Japanese cucumbers seasoned with various salts.
For all sake lovers, this is sake heaven on earth!!! There are more than 100 types of sake to sample from. ¥500 gets you 5 tokens. Each sample is approximately 1 token. The bespoke sake may require more than 3 tokens. There is no reason not to like this place. Super love!!!

I could not appreciate sake until I came here. They rate them with dryness, aroma, and richness. I got a sake that was 5 star dry and 1 star aroma/richness and then got one with 1 star dry and 4 star aroma/richness. You can tell the difference with each one. It's a smaller place and when it was crowded, a lot of people were standing in front of the sake dispenser even if they were just drinking. It made it harder to get to the sake I wanted to try and to read the name plate and description.

1st time trying sake sampling machine! 500 yen for 5 coins, and most of the sake costs you 1-3 coins, i.e. 100-300 yen each. So it's not that cheap compared to other local sake stores, but there are plenty of sake choices than other shops. It's an interesting experience that you must try once.

You can also get cucumbers to munch on. You can either have that with various types of salt or miso paste.
Water is available to cleanse your pallet.

We stopped by the ponshukan on our first day in the area. There is a wide variety of sake to choose from, as well as some shochu and other tipples.
You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the dispensing machines. We went through 15 gold-coins each. Some dispensers cost more than one coin, there are a good number of 2-coin machines and even one 7-coin machine! (We didn't try that one) If you want to get the most out of your coins, then there are plenty of 1-coin machines that have some great tasting sake. My favourite (number 69) was actually a 1-coin machine.
There are cucumbers and salt available as pallete-cleansers, but I opted for having an occasional water after some of the particularly strong tasting options.
There is no seating, it's standing room only. Which makes sense as customers (and you) will be moving back and forth to sample a number of drinks.
Fair warning: Beware of the alcohol % of number 95!

The price was 500 yen and you get 5 coins in return, the sake cost 1-2 coins depending on the type, there's a recommended sake list on the board if you dont know where to start. Was very fun! This way you can really tell the difference between types of sake

Kagura Ski Resort Tashiro Station is a popular destination for skiing enthusiasts due to its powdery slopes and access to backcountry terrain. It is especially suitable for beginners, boasting two fast lifts and a slow one without being too overcrowded. The resort offers access to the Naeba area and boasts a large ski area with high altitude, providing ideal snow conditions.

Beautiful mountain with a view of a beautiful lake next to the slope. Doesn’t have very good snow till end of Dec but I would very recommend this slope for anytime after Jan. not too far from Tokyo so that’s a plus as well.

This is my new favorite spot to set up base! With relative easy access to all three areas: Naeba, Tashiro, & Kagura. Even if this area is closed (it has a shorter season than the other two) You can still bus it to the others. The pistes are awesome Dec-Feb! Once you get down the hill from the ropeway the deeper runs are nice and wide, & long. The lifts are relatively fast, and this place has the best powder of the three imo.
This is for folks that have their ski and board legs under them. I wouldn't recommend it if this is your first time on a board or skis. Naeba is the best if the three for that imo. (It also has seemingly more capability to accommodate the international crowd).
It has been the least crowded of the three each time I've went. The dressing room is tiny but the lobby is huge. Way better than Kagura. The ropeway to the slopes is The public bath was filthy, and I truly mean nasty for Japanese standards. Perhaps it was because I went in so late but there was film and hair in the water. I turned on the hot water to let it all flow over the side. A simple constant flow would alleviate it from getting so many bad reviews. I stepped on the hill. No park area that I found but you have Kagura area for that.
I went on Christmas Day Saturday and it wasn't too crowded at all. At times, I felt as if I had the hill to myself. My best experience in the greater Yuzawa area to date! I will definitely set up base here next time up.
BE EXTREMELY AWARE OF THE BUS SCHEDULES! I can’t stress this enough! It’s around 40 min to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The last buses to or from run around 5pm. It’s around ¥10000 cab ride so plan accordingly! Firs bus runs around 5am with the next one around 8.
Justin Kayce — Google review
Tashiro is one of three areas at Kagura. Mostly wide open easy slopes. It takes a little time getting across to the Kagura and Mitsumata areas because you keep going more across the mountain rather than up (you'd need to be at least taking 5 lifts).
Due to its higher altitude, Kagura has one of the longest season in Japan (Nov-May) and there was still plenty of snow late (photos taken 30 Mar) and not too slushy, whereas at Naeba next door there wasn't much white stuff left.
There are two restaurants both not huge (they're packed during lunch hours), with other options over at Kagura or Mitsumata area. Strangely the restaurants offer no view of the lake despite both of them being right next to it! Instead go up lift Y for a spectacular view of the lake.

Seki Onsen Ski Area is a compact ski resort that's famous for its deep powder snow, steep slopes, and tree runs. It's the ultimate destination for freeriders who crave an adrenaline rush on mean deep powder rides. However, this resort is not recommended for inexperienced riders due to the depth of the snow. Avalanche kits are highly recommended as well, and solo riding is not advisable.
Epic powder heaven.
Not for beginners.
Be ready to hike and self rescue.
Alex Burr — Google review
Indeed great snow here but you'll get bored quickly with only two lifts, and one (the single pizzabox) was closed the day we came... The primary lift only accesses two runs, one groomed and one ungroomed.... Seems there is opportunity for a bit of exploration for backcountry deep powder, so snowboarders seem to love it here. We spent a half-day afternoon as a warm up to full days at the bigger resorts, not a bad option if you arrive around 12:30 and only 3000 yen. There are no crowds here but you could say that about anywhere in Myoko.... Slope-side restaurant was charming.

Seki onsen ski area is privately owned by a very nice and cool family. The runs are mostly in groomed and the food is home cooked style and it is THE BEST ski area lunch I have ever had in Japan!
The onsen is also one not to be missed! The onsen is red in color and the aroma is amazingly calming!
Check them out if you love ungroomed runs!

Seki is the true freeriders mountain if you're into powder & I mean deep powder riding then this is the best place to be , in my 32 years of riding this little resort had the best powder I've experienced with pillows and more pillows of pow pow. not for inexperienced rider due to it's deepness , my partner almost drowned here here from too much power, avalanche kits are recommended & riding alone not really suggested. Located on the Shiraito Highland Way in Karuizawa, the falls are a delightfully large, arched waterfall that offers stunning views in multiple seasons. A popular spot for sightseeing, visitors can enjoy hiking to see the falls from different angles.
Worth the bus ride from karuizawa station there, which runs quite infrequently. It's along a windy road uphill, so even without snow it would not be easy to get there walking or cycling.
The falls is actually only about 3 to 4 meter tall, but nonetheless quite beautiful, especially when covered in snow. Short 5 min walk, though a bit slippery, from bus stop to the falls, so 30 to 45 min is sufficient for a visit. Small shop at the bus stop for drinks, washroom, souvenir whilst waiting for return bus.
Norris C — Google review
The path leading up to the falls is well-maintained and easy to walk. A stream runs down from the main waterfall and along the side of the trail, making for a lovely walk to the main waterfall. The dirt track is slightly uphill, so recent rains can make it slippery. For this reason, I recommend wearing good walking shoes. The falls are beautiful and accessible year round. The fee is ¥500 to enter for parking.

It’s not a very large fall, but it will impress you. The nature is so beautiful here. The waterfall sound is pacifier of visitors’ mind.
Well, visitors have to pay 500 yen for parking. There is some souvenir shops. I visited there at the evening and there were lots of visitors. So it was a bit difficult to take photos because of the crowd.

The walk to the waterfall is quite easy and straightforward. The riverside is lined with a lot of interesting-lookijg insects, which was interesting in its own way.

Lovely waterfall site. Only 3 metres high, but a vast 70 metres wide. Park up at the bottom of the short pathway. Very popular with lots of tourists visiting. Amazing to see the water flowing from up above somewhere.

I've Googled my place here since we were driving on this trip. Three parking spots available. We came by near to 5 so the crowd has dispersed and the shops are almost closing. A quick walk-in to this beautiful waterfall view. Would highly recommend people to drop by. Best to wear anti-slip shoes during winter as there's a small slope to climb up.

This waterfall is really impressive. I recommend getting there before the shops open if you want to enjoy taking a few photos without anyone else in them. The place gets very crowded. Parking is free and it’s a 5 minute walk from your car. But there is a toll of 500 yen to use the road that gets you there. It’s worth it though.

Tranquil. The water comes out from the soil is just amazing to see it. There is also a hiking route. You need to take a bus to get there and it cost 720¥.

What a beautiful, refreshing spot!
No actual river flows into the Falls. The source of water is the rain that falls on Mount Asama, which takes about 6 years to come out. Regardless of the season, there’s always a constant flow of water.
We visited in mid-July during the weekend, and it was a bit crowded. If you are driving, please note there’s a 500 yen toll, but parking is free.

Looking like you are walking in the dream of nature.... You can also enjoy small local food stores in front of the entrance they are so cute please help support the locals and try something new. :))

A beautiful and scenic spot with waterfalls. They’re only 3m high but span around 75m.
It is up a private mountain road from Karuizawa. Tolls are chargeable and the road isn’t well maintained.
But parking is free. If you drive you can stop to take some pics along the way.
Alternatively lines 1, 2 and 8 reach there from the main station. The ride is about 20 mins and cost 720 yen.
Falls are up a short uphill walk.
There are kiosks selling warm food and a WC near the parking lot to the falls.

Shiraito Waterfall: It took approximately 36 minutes by bus from Karuizawa station, followed by a brief 2-minute walk, to reach the waterfall. I visited on December 31st. I recommend visiting during the fall season to witness the vibrant colors as a backdrop or in late winter when the waterfall is adorned with snow. However, for a December visit, I found the extended travel time for this particular view to be less satisfying.
Bijay Rai (Raijourneys) — Google review
Even in winter it’s worth visiting! It takes around 5-10 minutes to get to the waterfall from the car park and you can experience the water being warm despite the cold weather due to volcanic activity in this area 😱 If you’re going there by car on a snowy day, be careful because the road can get very slippery!
Anna — Google review
Beautiful water falls and stream. Plenty of free parking and a just a short uphill walk. There's restrooms and a small shop at the entrance as well. It is located on a toll road so make sure to have some cash for that on hand. It's a lovely drive to get there as well. Lovely trees that form a bit of a tunnel with their branches over the road. Great spot for a picture of your favorite car if there's no traffic!
Evan Moniz — Google review
Really amazing falls... it means white line falls, but if you check the surroundings, there is no river uphill, and the water comes from the ground, and it emerges in the transition between the soil and the rock under.

The Old Karuizawa Ginza Street is a charming shopping area in the center of Karuizawa that's full of restaurants, cafes, and shops selling local culinary or craft specialties. It's well-represented by this lovely shopping area known as Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Street, which is a popular destination for tourists every year.
Beautiful lane with fun things to do. Street is filled with cute puppies. Best place to buy karuizawa special jams , honey etc.

So so cute. Miffy & Peter Rabbit stores, Snoopy cafe + store, nice cafes plus we went to this shoe store Spingle Move which sells shoes hand made in Japan. We heard they are super comfortable from some friends and my husband bought 3 pairs. He was delighted after he wore them! The service in this store was also 100%

I came across this street by chance, it's has many shops and galleries as well as places to eat, it seems sauasage, beef and ham is popular.
I explored from one end of the street to the other. It was a gentle and interesting walk, easy to get to from station.

Nice place to walk around especially if you're staying at a nearby resort. Rent a bike and explore the area. Grab a bite. Buy something. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Lots of shops to see and lots of little streets to walk down, but since we went during winter (mid Feb), many of the shops were closed. Most of the shops here also open only 11am onwards, so try not to visit too early if not you'd have nothing to do.
Perhaps this street (or area) is more of a summery street for visiting! I saw bike rental areas nearer to Prince Shopping Centre side, and I assume it's because there's actually a lot to see in this side of Karuizawa! For winter, maybe not as much.
Highlights of the Old Karuizawa Ginza Street would be shops selling honeys and jams. There are quite a few of these shops, so don't make a hasty decision in entering the first shop and buying things there. Feel free to walk around a bit more and just note down the shops that you like.

The old street is a nice experience from the other side of the prince outlet. I’d recommend to spend half a day (at least )here to enjoy the food , the walk and the atmosphere

Came in mid dec 2022. It was really cold since we are pretty high up in the mountains and that was winter. And due to it being the winter months, some businesses were closed till spring due to lower tourist numbers. However having visited the place in Oct 2018, the lack of any large crowds did make the tourist experience slightly better since it was easier to find seats at local dining spots. Do be careful of snow and sleet in the winter months as it’s a slipping hazard around the area. Even though it rained in the morning, it cleared up by the afternoon and the views of the street was really beautiful.

A must visit place if you are going to Karuizawa it is an interesting street but a lot of stores closed when I was there in December 2022. There is a miffy, snoopy and studio ghibli store along this street. Be sure to try the curry bun while you’re here!

The sound of the murmuring of the river is soothing, and relaxing while having a meal is the perfect way to relax.
Many people bring their pets with them, so it's also a great place to casually take a walk.

It's almost 7-8 km from the karuizawa station. Bus facility is there but please do check the schedule. We took a taxi from price hotel resort for around 2400¥ . And while returning back we took a bus for approx. 500¥.( 25mins) place is calm with natural water reservoir. we couldn't explore due to lack of time but one Indian/ Nepali restaurant is there and few other's too. We went to " Sawamura bakery and restaurant" food was good. Especially black coffee, freshly baked variety bread basket and kids plate !! Kids plate was wholesome and nutritious. Our 5 yrs old could eat a half of it !! Staff was very kind and considerate. We decided to sit outside even on a cold windy afternoon. But she put on a heaters, handed over blankets to cover our legs and offered kids high chair too. There is a famous onsen just a walk away from this place.

The place was nice with variety of shops and restaurants, but it's smaller than expected. Without spending time for a meal or coffee, you may finish exploring the area in 10 mins. I ended up spending more time exploring the nature scenic path along the side than at the Harunire Terrace.

It looks like a resort, which is nice. There are about 15 stores near the river, all of which have a log house-like design. The atmosphere is great and you will be healed just by being there.
Also, there are many people with pets. 1 in 10 couples bring a dog with them. There are almost no white tourists here, and there seem to be many Asian tourists.
Since I went during high season, the parking lot was crowded and I couldn't get in even after waiting, but for some reason there were 7 free parking spaces available. It is best to walk along the river instead of on the road. It goes by so quickly.

Located in Naka-Karuizawa, within the Hosino area, Harunire Terrace wooden boardwalk is lined with several small and stylish restaurants, bakeries and cafes that are lined parallel to one another.
In addition to eateries, Harunire Terrace is also home to a few boutiques.
Take a stroll along the stream beside the terrace and enjoy the surrounding picturesque forest.
The overall design of Harunire Terrace embraces the use of natural timber, allowing it to blend into its forestry setting.
Although Harunire Terrace is small, it is very pleasant place to spend your time serenading into the nature has to offer.

Kumoba Pond, also known as Kumobaike or "Swan Lake," is a popular destination in Karuizawa, Japan. Legend has it that the pond was formed by rainwater filling the footprint of a giant from nearby Mount Asama. Tourists and photographers flock to this modest pond seasonally to witness its stunning display of autumn leaves, making it a must-see spot for koyo (fall foliage) in Karuizawa.
Beautiful, Scenic pond. with dirt paths and amazing trees. There is a cozy restaurant nearby with a nice view of the pond. A must see in Karuizawa.

my family member gave up on going here due to a snow blizzard starting so i walked there alone and saw other tourists struggling with the weather. i ended up going back shortly after and almost flew away due to the strong wind on the way. the pond probably looks better in autumn; i wouldn't recommend visiting in winter.

Visited Kumoba pond on 11 Nov 2022 and we were quite lucky to catch some of the autumn leaves during our short visit there. It’s probably best to check the reviews around the dates you intend to visit because I imagine it might not be really worth a visit in the winter or when the trees are barren. Also, when we were driving, there were some roadworks and the construction workers told us to continue driving us (and didn’t seem to allow us to turn in) so we ended up parking quite a distance away. However as we walked towards the pond we realised the carpark right by the pond was still open for parking! Make sure you double check with them.

A scenic small pond within walking distance of Karuizawa Station. I visited in February and there were lots of snow. The scenery of the pond was so beautiful. I advise not to take either a bus or a taxi because the road to the pond is also very scenic. Walking around the pond takes approximately 20 minutes.

Beautiful pond in the city of Karuizawa to catch the autumn foliage which is beautifully reflected on the water. It's a small pond/lake with a walking path around it.
It's a nice walk from either Karuizawa train station or shopping street. The color of the leaves when it's peak foliage is unbelievable, and do expect crowd at that time of the year.

Beautiful place for autumn foliage. The front area has magnificent view. The best time to go there is first week of November.
There is no entrance fee and it is open anytime. The middle part of the pond is not impressive and there are lots of mosquitoes.
However, there is no parking for cars. The nearest coin parking is about 1 km from the entrance. Some people rented a bicycle and just go there. I guess that’s the best way or you can just walk.
There are several restaurant and cafe nearby. There’s a cozy restaurant beside the pond.

It is a beautiful pond, magnificent view in all seasons.
During my trip planning, I misinterpreted it as a lake when I saw the pictures online, it is actually a small pond and interesting enough it is the backyard of some lucky homeowners. However it still worth a visit.
It is near to JR station, reachable by bus or 15-20 minutes walk.
I visited here end of October, trees already welcoming autumn by turn into red. Cool and cozy weather good for exploring.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza is a sprawling complex featuring high-end designer outlets, charming cafes, and delectable restaurants. Boasting over 200 shops across its West, Central, and East sections, this open-air shopping mall offers an exhilarating retail experience akin to an amusement park. Visitors can explore a diverse range of stores offering fashion items, accessories, interior design pieces, and gourmet dining options.
This is one of the largest outlets in Japan and there is a large number of different shops from restaurants, to brand clothing. Unlike many other outlets this outlet has a big lake in the middle and walking around the outlet feels like walking in another town. There is a kids park for kids to play and numerous cafes scattered around the outlet where you can rest and take a brake from shopping. The parking space for vehicles is sufficient for everyone and it is usually never full because of the number of cars it can hold. Definitely stop by if happened to be in Karuizawa.

Quite a huge outlet right next to karuizawa station and if you are also intending to combine a skiing trip this would be quite ideal - shop plus ski in winter.
It was raining on the night I visited and the 2 main shopping wings/building are not connected by shelter. It would be an issue if it is a huge down pour.
The shops closes very early which I felt they should at least extend it to 9pm instead of 8pm which is really too early.
Price wise, if you look hard enough and spend time ploughing through slowly, there are great buys especially the Japanese brands.
