Ski & Snowboard Areas
Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is a winter sports destination that offers skiing and snowboarding opportunities, equipment rentals, on-mountain dining options, and a bustling village. This resort is ideal for beginners as it provides an environment that is friendly to new skiers. Hiromi from Snow Crystal Yoga and Wellness can assist in arranging everything needed for your trip, including ski passes and lessons. The resort also boasts some unique experiences like having dogs on the slopes!
It's a really great getaway from Tokyo. This place has so many spots to go and is super close to all the things you need. The ticket and rental is not too bad either. Unfortunately, we came in late March so the snow is kinda melting already

Great ski resort, easily accessible from Tokyo (shinkansen and then express bus). The slopes are great and the town itself is very quaint with tons of onsens and great restaurants. No problem if you speak no Japanese either. Only real complaint is that some of the connectivity between lifts is a bit weird. There are a number of "connector" lifts to help get you over little ridges so sometimes instead of just skiing down to the lift you want, you have to skate for a bit and take another short lift. Also, wouldn't necessarily recommend this place for total beginners since there's not a lot of ways for beginners get off the top of the mountain. (There *are* ways though so it's not a deal breaker). Terrain park options are also a bit slim. Overall though, I'd still highly recommend this resort.
Michael Mauer — Google review
A great resort with plenty of runs and good off piste parts. Great POW when it snows , highly recommend for a traditional town who plenty of local Japanese attributes, cheap lift pass as well. Only a handful of restaurants actually on the mountain, but more on the bottom , with fair prices for food and drink.

A wonderful snow resort. It was my first time skiing, and it's very beginner friendly. We had a blast! Hiromi from Snow Crystal Yoga and Wellness organized our whole trip, arranging our rentals, lessons, and ski passes. Highly recommend using her services if you don't want the hassel of arranging everything, especially if you don't speak Japanese well.

Amazon snow resort! Totally loved it. The slopes were great, less crowded compared to other famous mountains. The gondolas were brand new and quite fast! They even have an amazing park for practicing tricks and stuff. I would totally visit again.

Love the snow and slopes at nozawa onsen! Thick and fluffy snow, with plenty of long and wide green slopes. Which are good for beginners. Still preserved well to keep local tourist and business active. They’ve multiple stations and beginner slopes for both ski n snowboarding. Highly recommended! Price - okay Location - great, 2 hours Shinkansen from Tokyo Snow - amazing Cleanliness - great Thy do not have blue slopes. Thy have plenty Forrest trail for skiing too.

Fantastic experience snowboarding here for three days. Two gondolas that may shut down for high winds. Well marked trails. Nice places for lunch or coffee at various locations on the mountain.

Lovely ski resort - there were dogs on some of the slopes the day I went!! Not sure why but they were SO cute. I guess you can bring your dog here???

This resort is my favorite place on earth. I am so glad that it is quite close to Tokyo and easy to access for a weekend. The runs are amazing, and there are plenty of trees to play in. Huge resort with two gondolas. Can’t ask for much more!

A great resort town that is authentic and full of hidden character. Some of the best snow, best food, and best people here. Enjoyed some touring with Experience Nozawa guides and the hidden yakitori restaurant was amazing. Great snow conditions too!!!
Maria Baker — Google review
Great resort, plenty of runs that will takes days and days to explore. A really cool village vibe. The mountain is 1650m so plenty of vertical to snowboard and at the half way point of the mountain plenty of mild blue runs for the family. Great cat trail runs from the top that keep you entertainedand challenged as to how fast you can decend, Skyline is an amazing long run to the bottom. You won't be disappointed!

20 April 2023: Had a great skiing day! To give some info: I was afraid that the snow would be totally gone, however as of 20 April the higher slopes are still available. These are 2 lifts and around 5 slopes which 4 are of medium difficulty and 1 a bit harder. Good fun for 3 hours. Price info: full day skiing around 4.800 yen, 4 hours pass: 4.200 yen, ski rental just infront of the lift has ski gear and shoes for 2.800 yen for half a day. Next time I come back before April so all the slopes are open:) I came for a day from Tokyo by train and bus. Cheers!

The Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is one of the largest snow resorts in Japan. It has the longest ski slope 11km in Japan. I often visit by car and park at the Park 1, which is next to the longest gondola lift, for 1,000 yen for the weekend. It seems the Park 2 and 3 are always free, these parks are a bit far away but one or more free buses are available from the parks to the gondola. The area is very large and the slopes are wide and so long, so you can ski with your children without any worries. However, there is a lot of walking and climbing around lift stations and at the connections between the slopes and or areas. When I visit with my children, I wonder whether we are skiing or walking. Please note if visiting with a pre-school child. The child is not issued a ticket as they are free to ride the lift, so the child has to go through the gate with a parent or a companion, but once holding up the ticket, the time between the gate opening and closing again is very short. Therefore, I met several times that only the child went through the gate and I could not. There were no staff around the gate and it was very difficult. Improvements requested. The snow resort is really huge and one day is not enough to enjoy. Nozawa village also has great hot springs, I want to revisit here for a longer stay to enjoy the whole resort.
Shige SHIMOYAMA — Google review
Small village/town with a lot of tourists who come for the ski resort. There's a lot of local restaurants a short walk from the ski resort and the snow was really powdery and soft during January. Although there has been a lack of snow which didn't seem like an issue to me since the snow in Australia set a very low standard
Sandra Fu — Google review
Scenery was beautiful. Awesome powdered snow. There are varied runs of different difficulties and lengths.

Fabulous resort surrounding a cute town with 13 onsens free to use at any time. Restaurants in town get very busy so you'll need to book. Food on the slopes is high quality and well priced. There is ski rental in various places. Ski runs can be very long. Lots of lifts and options for intermediate skiers.

In the charming town of Nozawa Onsen, Ogama stands out as one of the 30 natural hot springs. This outdoor onsen is a certified national natural monument and is known for its nearly 100-degree hot water that bubbles up from deep underground. Surrounded by shrines, this historic site also features a market where locals cook vegetables and eggs in the scalding water. Cool open hot spring at the top of a hill in the village. Only locals are allowed to use the spring, as it’s so hot that it’d burn the uninitiated , but it’s a beautiful sight nonetheless.

Ogama is an outdoor hot spring which is surrounded by shrines, set in a beautiful, historic corner of Nozawa Onsen. This onsen is so hot (90℃), locals use it to cook vegetables and eggs. You can try some of this food in the market next to the onsen. There is also a large foot onsen around the corner (summer only). If you head down the hill from Ogama, you will see some of the most beautiful Ryokan accommodation and gardens in Nozawa Onsen.

Gorgeous temple, it is surrounded by many others and they are all well maintained. I wish there was a calendar for what days the temples are open or what days there are ceremonies. I accidently walked from behind and didn't see any trespassing warning until I walk out from the entrance. I think more warming signs should be placed...

(Translated by Google) Since it is said to be the "birthplace of Nozawana", I visited on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. It is not a famous tourist spot, nor is it large, but when you visit it, you can see the atmosphere of an ancient temple, such as the main gate, main hall, and carvings on the buildings. I was also able to ring the bell in honor of my wishes. It was Wednesday and it was quiet, so I didn't have the courage to attack... After visiting here and learning about the origin of Nozawana, I am glad I purchased Nozawana pickled vegetables. We think this is a must-visit spot when strolling through Nozawa Onsen Village. There was a sign posted at the entrance of the main hall indicating that seeds were also available for sale since this is the birthplace of Nozawana. Please note that we do not seem to be accepting entries for the Goshuin book. I also looked for a collection stand, but couldn't find it. When I returned to the tourist office and explained that I couldn't find it, they told me the exact location: ``It was installed at the top of the stairs in the temple grounds.'' I went back to see it yesterday, but a blue sheet had been pasted around the area, and there was no sign collection stand. Not helpful at all. We went in trying to find a place to camp in our van. A lady gave us a map circled a place but said it’s closed until summer July. It’s summer now… we asked if there was anywhere else and she just said no. The whole town was quiet and eerie. Not great for tourists. It was a really odd place. Japan tourism is not great out of the big cities. Not accessible for anyone who doesn’t speak Japanese and it’s like they don’t want foreigners to come which is odd because most of the town is falling apart and windows boarded up so at least we would bring money to small towns.

I came here to buy a souvenir stamp rubbing book to collect rubbings at the various onsen and other spots I visited during my trip to Nozawa. It’s a fun thing to do and, after purchasing the book, free as the columns with the running plates are outside and free to use. Unfortunately I only collected a couple rubbings as it snowed heavily the weekend we visited (yay for skiing) but that meant the columns with the rubbing plates were buried under snow drifts. Oh well, guess we will have to try to take another trip here. :)

The Takano Tatsuyuki Memorial Oborozukiyo-no-yakata Hanzan Bunko Museum offers various attractions across its two floors. On the first floor, visitors can explore an exhibition featuring the works of Dr. Tatsuyuki Takano, as well as a café area and a corner for purchasing products. The second floor is home to a gallery space and a viewing platform that provides breathtaking views of the Hokushin Gogaku region.
(Translated by Google) I heard that he was the creator of songs such as Furusato, Oborozukiyo, Autumn Leaves, and Spring Has Come, but why is this building in Nozawa Onsen, and does it have any connection to this place? My long-held doubts have now been resolved. I have seen stone monuments in Nakano City, but that is the place where he was born, and Nozawa Onsen is the place where he moved to in his 50s and lived and loved for about 20 years until his death. Looking at the chronology, at the age of 24 he started as a teacher at a normal school, and two years later became in charge of singing at the Ministry of Education, and by the age of 36, he had created a series of songs that were electrifying to many people. Since then, he has been advocating for more research into traditional Japanese music in the educational field, which tends to be dominated by Western music, and he has continued to study Kabuki and other Japanese poetry until his later years. I want to say thank you for that. It is said that children no longer sing hometown songs. They say it's because the poems are too old-fashioned to understand, but that's what makes them interested in the past. I felt that the beauty of Japan, which has been cultivated for a long time, was conveyed through beautiful melodies and songs.

Billiken Shokudo is a beloved eatery in Nozawa onsen, situated near Asagama onsen in the old district of town. The restaurant offers a variety of homemade pizzas and large pasta dishes, along with an extensive side dish menu featuring must-try options like Sui-gyoza and cob salad. Who would have thought you can order pizza at a traditional Japanese restaurant in a traditional Japanese onsen town. Well, the pizza is actually very, very good - thin crusty base with very stretchy tasty cheese. The ramen, katsu curry are also very delicious with great depth of flavour. However, the pizza is still the highlight... We wanted to try more dishes and hence we have already re-booked to go back in 2 days time to try the other pizzas.

A lovely little a-la-carte restaurant. The interior is split into an "old pub" style area with tables and a bar, and a small traditional Japanese area for customers to sit on tatami mats. A docile cat lounges at the bar that customers are free to pat. Food is ordered from an iPad (English and Japanese) and service is efficient. Food is brought out as it is ready. This restaurant offers rice/curry dishes, noodle dishes, sides (including salads and fried foods), pizza, drinks, and dessert. Vegetarian options are also available.

Soba noodle shop
Restaurant
Sobadokoro Daimon is a renowned historic soba restaurant that has been serving customers since 1926. With around 20 seats, this establishment offers an authentic dining experience. The soba noodles are made using Nozawa's pristine water, resulting in exceptional flavor and texture that pairs perfectly with the soup. Visitors can enjoy cold soba noodles after indulging in the nearby hot springs, creating a refreshing contrast.
Hits the spot in a cold day and tired legs from the snow. Staff spoke English and food is hearty and delicious. Don't come with expectations of Michelin star. It is just a down to earth soba/udon restaurant.

It was worth the hour in line. I ordered the grated Japanese yam cold soba, regular size. The egg and yam, with the added wasabi dipping sauce was a whole new experience. It coated the soba and made it so silky. I couldn’t get enough of it! I’m not a big eater but I ended up ordering a second soba because it was so good! And also wanted to try the hot soba 😋 got the shrimp tempera and it just hit the spot. Warmed me up so satisfyingly. I did end up preferring the cold soba dish more because the texture of the noodle and it held together better. Very friendly people and the order came quickly. They open at 5:30 - 8pm for dinner and I didn’t get their lunch hours.

Really enjoyed the tempura soba and even more so the cold soba. I thought that was very unique to dip the soba noodles into the broth then eat them. All around it was a very delicious meal and I would go back again. One of the highlights was sitting at the communal table and interacting with locals with limited English. Great experiences!

Excellent food and pleasant atmosphere. The soba was outstanding and we were also very happy with the range and quality of non-soba dishes. Prawn tempura was literally the best we’ve tasted anywhere, which is based on a lot of experience.

I was lucky to have been first in the queue so the wait was short. While I was eating there was a long queue outside. I was going to order a hot dish as it was the middle of winter but then realised others were eating cold soba noodles - I’m glad I ordered cold soba noodles too. We ate noodles at three different restaurants in Nozawa Onsen and this place had the best noodles. The assorted tempura was also popular and had run out.

Teppanyaki restaurant
Tanuki Teppanyaki offers a unique dining experience in the heart of Nozawa, showcasing the best of Shinshu (Nagano) region. The restaurant overlooks the main street and provides an intimate setting with seating times at 6:00pm or 7:45pm. With a maximum capacity of 14 seats, reservations are essential. The menu features high-quality local Japanese cuisine, including apple-fed Wagyu beef that is highly praised by visitors.
Really nice place. All about the meat. Was struggling to find somewhere to eat when we found this. The food was lovely. It's not cheap but it's all about the quality

Staffs are kind but foods are just ok

Great good friendly staff and creative food. Chef had ingenious ideas about food. This would not be a typical teppanyaki. Had a great time !

Nozawa has an array of amazing food throughout...unfortunately this is not one. After having high hopes of dining here it was quite disappointing. We left unsatisfied both in our hunger and expectations. The service was great and staff were really friendly. Far too expensive for what it is, it felt like a bit of a tourist trap. All in all, check out the many other amazing restaurants Nozawa has to offer.

Had a wonderful dining experience here. Fresh local produce and prepared by a skilled chef Yamazaki. Definitely worth the effort to get a reservation there. Fyi. It opens only during the winter season.

THE best food ever! Didn’t want it to end! Every mouthful was out of this world!

One of the best meals I’ve ever had, and I’ve eaten in waku ghin

If you want to eat quality local Japanese food... but in an Australian-owned building, surrounded by Australian guests, and served by an Australian chef, and pay the usual high Australian price, then eat here. It was nice but felt like any high-end teppanyaki back home - only with well-sourced local ingredients. Don't get me wrong, it was very nice, and the chef was friendly and explained each course in detail. I was just expecting a more "local" experience. It wasn't that kind of traditional place, very modern and very, well... Australian. 5 stars if you're ok with that, 3 stars if you're looking for a very traditional Japanese teppanyaki cultural experience.

Tanuki is a must try whilst in Nozawa. The food is exceptional, the apple fed Wagyu is next level delicious. The chef explains each course which differed from anything I'd tried before so a unique dining experience. The location is great too, right in the heart of town overlooking the main street with a lovely atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

Seems to be targeting a mix of fine-dining experience with teppanyaki, without any of the (admittedly American origin) flair of cooking in front of you on a hot plate. There are many other places in town that would offer much better value for money, and other places that might offer a similar 'western fine dining' experience. The food itself was fine and service great as all other Japanese restaurants are. Hard to recommend in comparison to the other options available in town.

Genki Burger is a compact and relaxed eatery that offers a unique blend of Japanese-Australian fusion burgers, along with various side dishes. The burgers are exceptionally tasty and generously portioned, albeit on the expensive side. The fries have a slightly high salt content but are enjoyable nonetheless. The drink selection is extensive, with the standout being their must-try lemonade. The pleasant staff member single-handedly prepares the food, adding to the cozy atmosphere of this small yet lively establishment.
I live in Tokyo and this is the best burger I’ve had in Japan! It was juicy but not oily, and the flavours were amazing. Service was okay, just like a fast food shop, so nothing personable, but friendly enough. Dude at the counter gave good recommendations 👍🏻 It’s a small space (15 people?) so pray for luck or just order a takeaway.

Cute little burger spot located by the Main Street of Nozawa onsen! The restaurant is tiny but the food is good! We enjoyed the Genki burger and the fire loaded fries. I think the fire loaded fries were our favorite! The menu was available in both Japanese and English - which makes ordering really easy! Overall very relaxed vibe! Recommend coming here for a drink, snack, or meal post skiing!

Good burgers. They were able to do mine without a bun, which was great. It's very small, so you basically have to take it to go during Covid restrictions. The staff speaks English. There are options to call in your order ahead of time. Check their website and Instagram.

Nice delicious burger 🍔. We ordered no.1 and 4 from the menu list. No.4 is very delicious, it come with egg and nozawa veg pickles. Limited seat in the small shop, but the burger is delicious, worth the wait.

Delicious (and huge) burgers but they are very expensive. The fries are a bit salty but good. They have a lot of drink choices but my favourite is the lemonade. It is a must try. The lady who was working there when I went was very nice to us and she made the food all by herself. The place is small and loud with music but it gives off cool vibes. It is a but hard to look for but if you go to Hotel Haus St.Anton, then turn right into the alley you'll see a small staircase and go up and you'll find the burger restaurant.

Great comfort food, western style. Go for the loaded fries. Any of the burgers are amazing. Consider skipping out on inflated prices for the nozawa onsen lager (you can try this later from buying it at the liquor shop for half the price) Highly recommend at least once during a Nozawaonsen trip.

Solid burgers. I loved the Fusion Loaded Fries. Order if you like pickled vegetable. My only gripe was that they didn’t toast the burger buns. Would have been perfect if the buns came out toasty. Overall pretty good for what Nozawa Onsen has to offer.

We came here for dinner tonight and this place did not disappoint. We ordered the one Genki and Abunai each and they were delicious in their own way with very different flavors. We also ordered a original Loaded Fries and they were delicious and quite filling. The wait time is what it is because these burgers are cooked to order so we were happy to wait. The place is cozy, but there is enough seating and the dinner crowd quickly filled the space. I thought the price was quite reasonable for the freshness and the quality. You get what you pay for. I recommend this for anyone looking for a top notch burger while they’re here and I would revisit again. Also, they have a hot sauce available to try that I haven’t seen before and it has a real kick which mixed nicely to the ketchup.

Great burgers not greasy like some of the new trendy places that are dripping in mayo, just the right balance. The loaded fries were a hit too.

Genki Burger is defined one of the best burger spot in Japan! We visit every time we are in the area—it never gets old. We love the loaded hot fries—served with chopped up jalapeños. I always go for the veggie burgers. They’re all delicious, but the lotus and fried tofu edge out the mushroom for me. Highly recommend this if you’re in the area.

I'm a kid who went to Nozawaonsen in February. This place was right next to my hotel, so I went there for dinner usually. The food is genuinely great. The Skyline Chicken Burger and the Umami-san are both my usual, and they're absolutely amazing. The Chicken Burger with a crispy and juicy chicken, with the Umami-san being made with a sweet and savory homemade jam. The fries are loaded plenty with melted cheese and scallions, really nice and crispy with a lot of salt. Now, the restaurant itself is small, but it has a cozy feel to it and it's a nice place to go to, with extremely nice staff that I even became good friends with before I left. The food comes out pretty quick, fresh off the grill. Overall, I love this place. It might be because I'm just a kid and I have low standards, but please do visit here, and say hi to my friend Kai, who works there, if you see him.

Walked in to find a bunch of boys dancing and cooking and having an all round great shift. Lovely food. While it has a teeny tiny seating area there was a quick turnover of people so you didn’t wait long for a seat. They do takeaway too. Classic Australian service (IYKYK😂)and good tucker, as cheap as possible sticker wall and ply wood interior, tad gritty. ✌️

Rest house Yamabiko is a prominent dining establishment in the Nozawaonsen Ski Resort, conveniently situated near the Nagasaka gondola top station. It offers an extensive and delectable array of food and beverages, as expected in a bustling ski resort setting. This eatery serves as an ideal venue to indulge in a satisfying curry and beer after exerting oneself on the Kenashi slopes. Particularly noteworthy is their superb vegetable curry (#7 if memory serves), which is truly exceptional.
Great cheap place for food on the slope. Does get quite packed around 12:30

Delicious garlic rice and curry dishes. Plus, some great views of the slopes.
Kristin P — Google review
One of the “flagship” eateries in Nozawaonsen Ski Resort, located nearby Nagasaka gondola top station. Tasty, broad selection of food and drinks, crowded as expected on a ski resort.
Eugene Firsov — Google review
Ski mountain food, plenty of options, reasonable pricing and quick friendly service.
James Kelly (Y&M) — Google review
This place just keeps getting better over the years. With the new gondola station, the first floor has been converted to a large seating area and pizza is served on the first floor while everything else is available on the second floor. Seating used to be a problem during lunch time but with expanded seating it’s much better now. The food is delicious but if you had to try one thing, go for the garlic steak rice. It’s the most popular item for good reason.

It's ok. It's food. It'll fill you up for riding. But it's average at best. Has a few noodle choices. Pasta. Grilled chicken. Katsu Curry. Sausages. Much better places in the mountain when they open up (mid December).

Great spot to share a curry and a beer after giving Kenashi your all in the morning. Vegetable curry (#7 if I recall correctly) is exquisite..see you next year
Bill Sanderson — Google review
Rude poor people, usually cook and chiefs here are those who are not good at cooking and they couldn't find a job in a proper restaurant or hotel, basically a shame fo their family. Food is not so good, wine is poison.
