Garyu Park

Nature & Parks
The Garyu Park is a wonderful destination that features a small zoo, cozy cafes, and winding pine forest trails. Visitors can enjoy strolling along the serene lake surrounded by seasonal cherry blossoms which create a stunning display of nature's beauty during the springtime. On sunny days, the park offers breathtaking views of nearby mountains dusted with snow that add to the picturesque scenery. There are several snack bars offering delicious treats and ice cream for visitors to indulge in while exploring the park's attractions.
We came here to visit in April 2022 and we were treated to the most beautiful cherry blossom display I have seen. The park looks gorgeous with the full bloom. On the day we visited, the temperature was quite warm, and the sky was clear blue amd sunny. We walked around the pond in the middle and I took many pictures of my family and the trees. The mountains in the distance framed the pictures really well with a little snow still on top. There are many places to grab an icecream or a little snake and the facilities were clean. Everybody was enjoying the spring feeling and there were smiles on everyone's faces.

Staff are very accomodating. They smile as they accept you on the gate. My one year old kid enjoys a lot,we went january 3rd of the year and many people enjoys too! We had wonderful experience here at this place as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. Zoo is nearby and sakura trees which has name on it feels that the park is well maintained.

(Translated by Google) This year, the cherry blossoms bloomed early everywhere, but I did a lot of research to see if I could see them, and since I had heard that this place was in full bloom, I took the high speed trip and came from another prefecture. However, it had already been a few days since they started to disperse. It was a shame because there was a cherry blossom festival going on and there were a lot of tourists. It would have been beautiful if it was in full bloom.

(Translated by Google) When I took a quick look at Garyu Park on April 4th, it seemed like an ordinary park, but when you see the night view, it becomes completely different. The illuminated cherry blossoms reflect on the calm surface of the lake, creating a magical atmosphere. According to the locals, this is the first time in more than ten years that the weather has been calm during the cherry blossom season, so they were happy that they were lucky this year.

If you're trying to find cherry blossom when the season in Tokyo is already over, this place is perfect for you, the view is nice and it's not really crowded here (well I went there in the morning when it was raining a bit, not really sure about the situation in another time and condition)

A very beautiful place, not so big but it has a lot to offer for its size with relaxing paths to walk, cafes, flowers and trees and a boating lake. It's great for a picnic!
Jack Clements — Google review
If you have the opportunity to visit in cherry blossom season I highly recommend it! The lake surrounded by the blooming trees is simply a dream-like view. When it's hanami, you can enjoy local dishes at tents on the side of the park. If you're in Tokyo, the trip is around 3-4 hours with various changes between lines but it's totally worth it.

Well maintained Park very good to walk
Amol Dalal — Google review
A nice park a 20 mins walk from the train station, there's a small lake you can walk around and a couple of trails up the hills a bit to get some views of the mountains. There's also a sweet little shrine on an island, lots of ducks and fish to feed, a few small shops and a zoo (was closed when I was there). Generally quite a nice place to wander around and I'd guess it'd be lovely when the leaves turn too.

I really liked the museum! It shows a old house from a very wealthy family. You can see a bit of how wealthy families lived/had some hundreds years ago. Although I was happy to see it. I think it should show more, the museum itself, with the belongings of the family is quite concentrate. Is a simple museum. Would be good see some house rooms settled as they were before. Anyway is worth to see. And it have a nice Japanese garden. The town itself is nice as well. You will find other museums, nice shops and old japanese houses.

Tourist Attraction — Google review
It’s a local zoo. If you go in expecting that then you will be pleasantly surprised. It’s good for kids with a petting area, tour entries into the lemur cage, bear feeding and a play and eat area away from the animals. It lost two stars for how they treat their big cats. The enclosure is tiny, hard concrete and frankly, pretty poor. We want to enjoy this zoo but can only feel sorry for them.

(Translated by Google) How many years has it been since you visited the zoo? It's been 20 years since my kids were little? The Suzaka City Zoo is just the right size, so you can walk around it without getting tired. There is also a shop inside the park, so feel free to bring your own while you take a break. Moreover, the admission fee is ¥200 for adults, which is cheap. When Kangaroo Hatch was inscribed, it was so popular that admission was restricted. Now I can take my time and look around. However, I don't keep my pet dogs or cats at home because I don't want to restrain them. ``Birds'' must want to fly freely in the sky. I feel sorry for her and can't keep her. Zoo animals probably don't starve or get attacked, but am I the only one who feels there's something sad about their eyes? (Translated by Google) I visited on the middle day of the holidays on February 10th. This is my third time skiing this season after 20 years. I was a little hesitant to go deeper into Sugadaira since snow was forecast along the mountain from this morning, but it turned out to be the right decision. Immediately after the start at 9am, visibility was poor and the snow surface was somewhat rough (the snow was packed with snow from the night before, but it was uneven) and my board was taken off and I fell down several times, but as it approached noon, visibility cleared up somehow. Once I got there, I was able to get a feel for it and was able to ride it. There were only two lifts in operation that day, and it felt lonely even though it was a Sunday, but the lifts were never crowded. The slope is very good, such as the large intermediate slope with a park, but it would have been even better if the snow was a little more compacted. I entered the rest house next to the ski school just before noon. The 1st floor is a rest room, and the 2nd floor is a restaurant. Is the restaurant school cafeteria style? Take what you like and pay it off at the end. I had the Suzaka City specialty ``Misosukidon'' on the menu, and it was very satisfying with an egg on top. I got up early at 2pm when it was crowded, but on the way back, Sugadaira seemed to be very crowded with people waiting for lifts, so overall I'm glad I came here.

I have done the silent retreat July 2023. It was a unique experience. To book you need to refer to the website. There are also workaways possible. We were hosted by the gracious Eshin. She curated a week of silence, meditation, creative activities and contemplation. The superb meals was cooked by her gifted husband. Horakuan used to be a farm for silk production and has been renovated as a buddhist retreat with loving care. It is a marvelous place. I highly recommend this experience. You will not find it anywhere else.

Horakuan Temple Zen retreat was a perfect occasion for me to learn, experience and live the zen world. I would highly recommend it to any person who wants to get off the big city in Japan. Its a perfect opportunity to learn to meditate or have a space for it. The place is really deep in the mountains with beautiful view, nature and silent. Eishin is an excellent person who was always helping, providing information, teaching and listening. The retreat is full of different activities.

I love this place very much. The place is so beautiful, in the middle of pine forest. The food is fantastic. Generous serving, simple but very tasty and delicious. The rice is so well cooked and fragrant and served with some vegetables. The side dish is very nice too. The sushi is so unbelievable. But because I remember I came here for meditation, I control my food intake. Otherwise I would have eaten 2 bowls every meal. It serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 tea breaks. You got to do 3-4 meditations a day. There will be lots of activities to keep you occupied. Plenty of Japanese art work, outdoor activities such as walking meditation. There is also zimu or "work" where you are asked to do some chores. I especially like the barefoot walking on the grass very much. The feeling is just so nice and incredible that is beyond words. The sleeping is very good too. All is so good about this place. The nun itself is very friendly and responsive to email inquiry. I could see some wild animals in the forest such as deer, mountain cake on my first day of visit. I enjoyed myself very much in this place.
