Togakushi-Jinja

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Togakushi-Jinja is a significant and historic Shinto site comprising of five shrines, flanked by towering Japanese cedar trees. It is renowned for housing the first ever Buddha statue brought to Japan, which is hidden within its wooden walls. Once every six years, a replica of the revered statue is displayed to visitors. The next exhibition was scheduled for April 2020 but had been postponed due to COVID-19 until 2021.
Wonderful and magnificent place. It's a super important and historical place in Japan because it is hidden somewhere inside those wooden walls, the first buddha statue ever to be brought to Japan. And they shows a replica of the statue once every 6 years. Next show is supposed to take place onwards 2020 April (2021 show, after postponing due to corona). It's a bit far from Nagano station. You can walk too. When I search in maps, I couldn't find any bus to there. But you can get a bus from Nagano station. Number 70, I am sure. Visited date 2020 January 5th It was snowing beautifully
Narthana Sathsara — Google review
One of the most beautiful places in Nagano. There was heavy snow, and that was fun to walk throughout the way until we reached the shrine. The shrine on the top is usually closed during winters. But the pathway is beautiful

This is a major attraction in Nagano. To reach the Togakushi Jinga, you need to take a 1 hour bus ride. There are many shrines in this area, but during heavy snow days some places are not accessible.
Chamal Perera — Google review
The shrine is so beautiful, as expected from a Japanese shrine. It is surrounded by cedar trees that are definitely older than us. I recommend bringing friends when coming here, especially in winter, cuz some places may be challenging. The only minus is the toilet. It's not as clean as other Japanese toilets.
Santika Purwita — Google review
Stunningly beautiful in the winter! Try visiting all five shrines, and if you go in winter, dress WARMLY and wear sturdy boots. Trekking through the 800 year old forest in the snow is one of the most magical experiences you will ever have.
Katharine Cerezo — Google review
Direct bus from Nagano Station, numbers 70 and 73 will get you there. Then it's a hike up to the shrines and the giant Cedar tree forest pathway. The hike was done in snow today, and while most of it is relatively flat, parts are quite icy and slippery. Despite this, it was definitely worth the effort. Majestic and awe-inspiring are two phrases i have to use to describe the experience. Wonderful photo opportunities. Walking back from the giant cedar trees, there is a lovely Soba restaurant, and the meals really warmed the body on a snowy day. Wear appropriate warm clothes, however you can hire boots at the tourist information centre where the bus drops you off. Great cafe around the corner of the ingo center called Lamp Cafe, run by a fantastic old fellow who makes fantastic coffee and has a wide range of snacks. The loop bus leaves from opposite the Nagano Station at bus stop 7. You can buy the round ticket at the bus stop. Well worth the effort going to the shrines and cedar forest pathway.
Harro — Google review
beautiful shrine, beautiful walk - I really recommend not to do this shrine walk in sneakers, I am a fool and I was slipping so much - the information centre across the streets provides maps and rental boots (I wish I had rented the boots)
Brit Thew — Google review
Majestic experience if you get to hike among all 5 shrines. Direct bus loop departing from Nagano Station. About an hour ride up to the mountain, and about 2-3 hours walk for the while hiking trip. Visited during winter with heavy snow. Beware of the slippery ice, and be equipped with boots. The final segment with the trees may be closed during snow melting season. Be sure to double check with local before you go.
Jason Hung — Google review
It’s a very winding road going up the mountain to the shrines. They have five shrines to visit but was only able to visit the middle shrine (3rd) on this trip. The 3rd shrine has some very old cedar trees and a waterfall in the back area. It is very much a power spot! I will definitely be back to visit the rest of the shrines.
Annie Sobol — Google review
Gorgeous in the snowy seasons, but be advised - when it's snowy everything is CLOSED, i.e. nothing around the area is open except the vending machines! No Ninja Museum, no soba noodle restaurants, nothing! Google Maps is inaccurate during the snowy season! Definitely worth a hike, just make sure to prepare for knee-deep snow and go early as the last bus is at ~5pm.
Harjuno Perwironegoro (Uno) — Google review
Important place for Japanese people. For tourist, the way to the shrine is beautiful with very tall trees. The shrine at the end of the road is not very beautiful but it old and sacred. Near this sacred place, there are a lot of different temple linked to the same religion with trees as old as 800 years!

The picturesque Lake Nojiri is surrounded by majestic mountains, making it an ideal destination for a scenic boat ride. Seasonal recreational options are available at the lake, along with a prehistory museum to explore. The serene environment offers ample opportunities for fishing and catching fresh fish. During low season, visitors can easily navigate around the lake without any traffic hindrances. Spending summer at this beautiful location guarantees a perfect combination of sunshine, cool winds, waves and stunning scenery that will leave an unforgettable experience.
How does it feels to have a boat ride surrounded by mountains ? Yesterday my family went sightseeing at lake Nojiri and we took a speed boat round the lake where we had a good scenic view of the mountains and the small island in the middle of the lake. It was a Low season and we can easily go around the lake without much traffic. Occasionally you will see some people fishing at the lake, I supposed is a great place to catch some fresh fishes. Will definitely recommend this place to spend your summer where you have the sun, the mountains, the lake, the wave and the cool winds, not to forget the perfect scenic. Cheers

This is one of the historical site in Japan. 70,000 years ago there were an elephants and Japanese government preserved and presented it very well. The local people here are really helpful. You can really enjoy the calmness of the lake.

Beautiful scenery. Well worth the stop over and the electric bike ride from the train station.

Kurohime Kogen Snow Park is a ski resort that offers ski lifts, a ski school, and a kids' play area with snowmobiles. In the summertime, visitors can enjoy flowering meadows. The park has wide runs and enough space for skiers and boarders alike. It is also beginner-friendly with its wide and flat courses suitable even for children to enjoy snowmobiles. Additionally, they have intermediate level slopes but are limited in size.
Beautiful place, not many people like a private park for photo.
Chanittha Changsanam — Google review
The weather was really warm so it was perfect for sledding and building snowman but not so much for skiing. Nonetheless we had a lot of fun and the kids were entertained. The food is on the very expensive side but it was good and quick.
Wayne Yoshida — Google review
We came here because they cater to dogs and even allow dogs to ride up one of the lifts and then run down the mountain! We enjoyed seeing the many dogs and friendly owners. The facilities are quite nice and the guests are primarily families with many more skiers than snowboarders. Unfortunately the old men running the lifts had bad attitudes and little concern for guests boarding or exiting the lifts. The old man inside the control room of the high speed quad was actually sleeping. Some chairs had exposed grass on the exit that could have easily been covered up. Other than when I boarded with my dog no one even held the chair as I got on. The lifts may as well have been unattended. Maybe it was just me, because I’m a foreigner or a snowboarder, but we will probably not return.
brett fried — Google review
Decent place for beginners. They have a couples spits for intermediate levels but it's short. Overall great place for family.
Joemar Vuelban — Google review
Good size. Has good width in the runs so you can move to the sides and find plenty of space to ride. Nice even mox between skiers a.s boarders.
Xrandier — Google review
Beginner friendly, family friendly. Beginner course is wide and flat, even kids can have fun with snow mobiles.
Justin Lam — Google review
The kids snow park was massive and you took the sleds up the ski lift and down the sledding slopes!! So many toys to play with included in The cost. And a fire pit at the base to warm up at

A lot of courses to choose from. The parking lot is close to the building. Has a small but adequate nursing/changing room with a water server.

Love this place, great resort, incredible powder. Only 7 lifts but has literally everything from tree runs, to powder, to internet and beginner. Great hire, pool, onsen.

Perfect slopes for a beginner skier like me.

Some of the best tree skiing in Japan on a good powder day
Daniel Moore — Google review
Had the worst ski rental experience here. We wanted to pick up, as is usual everywhere, the evening before but they charged us an extra day which is crazy ( the lifts were already closed for that day). They were zero help in sizing for the kids. I paid for premium skis and was then presented with the worst selection I have ever seen. All the equipment was beat up and in bad shape. They even gave my wife broken bindings on her snowboard which we didn’t realise until we were the other side in Madarao and had to get a car to drive her all the way back over. If looking for anything above beginner level equipment I would avoid.
Leo F — Google review
We had a great time here. This is ski-in ski-out resort so everything was very nice and convenient for family. My 4 yo daughter could ski after 2 lessons and she enjoyed it a lot!

The place was a circus. Got my board run over twice by people who have no idea how to ski. If you don’t ski in the trees there is only the cat tracks down.

Lift passes are paper not scan, and the lift to the top opens around 10am. Take the top slope in the morning or it will get icy. Great speed run trails to the bottom.

Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum is a fascinating place to explore the history and culture of Arai. The museum showcases earthenware vessels from the Hida ruins, ancient folk art, and farm implements. Visitors can also marvel at the impressive life-sized Naumann elephant specimens excavated at Lake Nojiri. Additionally, near the entrance of National Route 18, there is a captivating life-sized Naumann elephant family with their babies, perfect for memorable photos.
Very informative and entertaining.

ナウマンゾウの化石の実物などが展示されており、復元模型の大きさに驚きました。 また、地層とか色々勉強になりました。 小さい博物館ですので、滞在時間は30分くらいだと思います。 (Translated by Google) The fossils of the Naumann elephant are on display, and I was surprised at the size of the restored model. Also, I learned a lot about strata. It's a small museum, so I think it's about 30 minutes.

This is a great afternoon stop for the kids. It is a little pricey but not too bad. Our kids loved the interactive area on the first floor. We ended up spending as much time there as the rest of the museum combined. The store has some nice little items as well.

(Translated by Google) The museum has been devised so that even children can enjoy it. Even as an adult education, it is a very easy-to-understand explanation and anyone can enjoy it. As an event, I happened to be able to participate in the experience of touching a real Asian elephant bone. According to staff, this is an event that only happens a few times a year. The photo is a certificate that proves that you touched it at that time. It seems that various events are held throughout the year, so I think it's a facility that you can enjoy whenever you come.

(Translated by Google) It is a highly recommended place to visit with children as you can touch actual fossils and experience various things. Inside the museum, there were many impressive exhibits and it was very interesting. There were also turtles and other creatures on the third floor. We recommend buying a set of tickets for this and the Issa Memorial Museum near Kurohime Station, as it will be cheaper. You really ought to go and see!

The specimens excavated at Lake Nojiri are also easy to understand. Even adults can enjoy it. On National Route 18 near the entrance, there is a life-sized Naumann elephant family with their babies, so it's a good place to take a commemorative photo. Naumann's elephants were much larger than I expected, and I thought it was amazing how people in the past hunted them.
