Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.

Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

The best meal we had in Hakuba. Delicious food and super attentive service.
Anthony Hughes — Google review
Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

The Ueda Castle Ninomaru ruin, which dates back to 1583, has been reconstructed atop a hill. The site includes two Shinto shrines and a museum that showcases the area's local history. Despite being relatively small in size, the place is quite pleasant. Although I did not have the opportunity to explore the castle itself, I was impressed by the abundance of flowers in the surrounding park and a delightful traditional event taking place nearby.
Huge park with museums, a shrine, and much more. You can spend so much time appreciating the history and beauty here. The whole month of April is a cherry blossom festival and it becomes very lively with street food stalls and people.
Nicholas Murphy — Google review
Really lovely castle with a very rich history of one of the coolest samurai clan in all of Japan, the Sanada clan, famous for their samurai uniform with antlers and red color (you've probably seen in movies). Ueda castle also had legendary defense battles against many sieges, the subject of a popular Japanese tv show "sanadamaru". The castle is also featured in other works such as "Summer Wars". While the castle gates aren't as big as Matsumoto castle, I think they are definitely worth visiting if you are in the area..they have amazing armor on display and a rich cultural center and museum nearby.

Came here 4/10/2022 and the sakura were all in full bloom. Depending on the year, the time of the bloom will change so check before you go. There were many food stalls selling your standard Japanese snack foods. I walked around the moat about 3 times just to admire the beautiful sakura trees on both sides.
TIP: In the middle of the moat is this small park that everyone just tends to overlook so it's not that crowded. Bring or buy food from the food stalls and eat it here. If you have a tarp, you can spread it out on the grass. There are also benches you can sit on as well. I climbed up the stairs and got a seat under a gazebo, right in front of a GORGEOUS pink sakura tree.
Highly recommend this place during cherry blossom season. I personally wouldn't plan a trip here off-season though since there's not much of a castle to see (but I'm just not a castle person in the first place...)

Anrakuji is an old Buddhist temple located in a forested area and characterized by an octagonal pagoda and a two-story bell tower. Its entrance is marked by a black gate, surrounded by lush greenery that makes the stroll towards the temple very pleasant. The three-story wooden tower boasts intricate carvings blending perfectly with the natural surroundings of Nagano. This national treasure can be visited for free, but admission to climb up to the tower costs 300 yen.
The one and only Octagonal shape pagoda can be found here, and it's the Anrakuji treasure . You will need to walk up some flight of stairs to the temple and to the pagoda, but it is worth the entrance fees of 300 yen per adult ( to see the pagoda) . Parking is free . Please park here so that you can visit the other two temples nearby .

Loved this temple from the entrance, featuring the black gate and plenty of greenery alongside the road leading to the temple. It was breezy and cool in the shade, which made the stroll very pleasant.
National treasure with the highlight as a three-story octagonal wooden tower. Intricate and original carvings of the tower were amazing to look at.
The tower blended very well with the lush green and the blue skies of early summer typical of Nagano. I suppose this place must also look splendid in the fall with yellow and red leaves as the backdrop.
My visit time was about 45 mins. Free to enter temple grounds, 300 yen to climb up to the wooden tower.

The beautiful octagonal pagoda is worth a visit alone. It’s incredibly complex and an original, too. It’s free to visit the temple and bell tower, 300 yen to walk up through the woods to the pagoda. Quite a few stairs. The staff are super friendly, too!
Kate McCauley — Google review
There is an entrance fee but worth paying to see the rare example of Song Chinese-style Zen architecture of the eight-sided pagoda nestled in the forest. There are many stairs to it, though, which also somewhat cuts down on crowds even though this is another of the must-see places in Bessho Onsen.

Went by rental car. Beautiful traditional Japanese buildings and shrines. Nice tea houses and restaurants so can spend a day here and can get lost so take your time. Lots of hills and stairs. Worth the visit.

The pagoda is a national treasure which really wasn't worth the 300 yen. There wasn't anything that stood out. Just your average temple.

Kitamuki Kannon temple is a 9th-century Buddhist pilgrimage site that has been reconstructed and features a sacred tree on its forested grounds. The temple, which translates to Kannon Buddha facing north, is accessible via a short street lined with shops and restaurants. It boasts a stunning main hall and serene surroundings away from the hustle and bustle of Ueda city.
No tickets were required to enter. Free temple to look around at. I enjoyed scoping out the place.
Ms. Duchaine “The Nomad” — Google review
A beautiful local spot of a 9th century Buddhist temple. Its name is literally translated as “Kannon Buddha facing the north”.
Upon entering via the gate from the main road, you will walk through a short street lined up with stores and soba restaurants before climbing up a bit to the temple. The grounds are not big but the main hall is quite stunning.
My visit time was 40 minutes. This spot seems quite popular among domestic Japanese visitors, and I saw some come in tours.
Ha Luu — Google review
This is one of the must-visit sights in Bessho Onsen. The temple has a deep and interesting history, modest but well-maintained buildings, ancient trees, and a great view. There's no entrance fee but also no English information. It's not touristy but often full of tourists, so I personally find some other places in the surrounding countryside more impressive.

One of our most memorable experiences, we were there in April 2016 , the food was amazing .
The Onioshidashi Volcanic Park is a magnificent location with paved pathways surrounded by rugged lava rock, seasonal azaleas and an exquisite view of the active Mount Asama in Japan. The park was formed by volcanic sediment deposited during the 1783 big eruption of Mount Asama. Visitors can explore various trails inside the park guided by boards, and a ticket purchase includes a guide.
I loved this place so much . Very good land scape from both side . Stones are very beautiful. They are made by lava . It’s not like other mountains. There is a shrine also . Highly recommended to this place and when you go to this place by car there will be beautiful drive road you have to pay 280 yen toll for that but you will enjoy drive through there
Explore with Rafsan ! — Google review
An underrated place to visit, filled with spectacular vistas of the surrounding areas filled with snow capped mountains and numerous lava rock formations
We tried to source for the timetable for the Seibu bus online before our trip but to no avail. We dropped by the Tourist Information centre and the friendly lady explained the timetable for the bus to the park to us. She also explained the availability of a 2-days bus pass which can be bought from the bus driver. This pass costs 2,000 yen and it already easily covered the price of a one day return trip to the volcanic park, if we had paid by cash or SUICA for each trip individually.
The first bus to the park leaves JR Karuizawa Station Bus stop 1 at 10am and the next at 11.55am. We spent about 3 hours strolling in the park taking in the spectacular vistas of the valleys draped in beautiful fall colors with Mount Asama and the surrounding mountains in the background.
We took the return bus at 1.30pm from the park back to Karuizawa. Each trip took about 45minutes.
It was an extremely magical experience and having been to a similar park in Iceland, this volcanic park in Japan easily trumps the one in every aspect. There were limited international tourists given how little information was available online on public transport to the park.

Beautiful place, so quiet and stunning views. Good infrastructure. There’s accessibility too, good for disabled persons.
Sadami Yoshida — Google review
Great experience especially the view and fresh air and the bell tower! You can see really far away. You will need to pay for ticket and parking is free. Toilet before entering into the ticket gate as well as there are buses that comes here.
Do check out luminous moss, bell tower and if you have time do the long route. If not just make it to the bell tower and the kannon, goddess of mercy temple. The fire kannon, is just a painting seems less authentic and not worth the walk.
Recommend coming in spring and summer when mountain flowers blossom.
There are steep road with higher attitude but have a few sitting areas on the way.
Winter on a Monday was very quiet with most shops closed
C. M. — Google review
Expensive (adults 700 yen, children 500 yen) and the scenery is not particularly pretty - just a paced path among volcanic rocks. Perhaps it's nice in autumn?
Lorenzo Colitti — Google review
This place worth the visit, easy access, amazing history and views. Mount Asama, an active volcano, had a big eruption in 1783, covered over a town, basically like the Pompei of Japan. Today, there is a shrine out on the hardened magma lava rock fields, easy paved trails to get up close, and spectacular views. Also surprised to see photos of John Lennon when he visited.
Harold Archer — Google review
This place was an amazing place. According to the Japan-guide website this park is shaped by volcanic sediment deposited here during the 1783 big eruption of Mount Asama. You can have the best view of Month Asama from here. Also There is a Japanese Shrine. There are different trails to go inside the park. All trails are guided by boards and they will give a guide when you purchase the ticket. Entrance ticket was 650円 and parking is free of charge.
Udayanga Senanayake — Google review
Nice volcanic national park, located about 30 minutes drive north of Karuizawa, just across the border into Gunma. Lush greenery all around. Well laid out paths. Short route (~40 minutes) is scenic with views of the crater and a walk through the forest. The longer route (~70 minutes) undulates around the crater with slopes up and down throughout. Friendly staff in the information centre.
Jason Chuei — Google review
The weather wasn’t great during our visit, so we couldn’t see Mount Asama. It was fine as we had a hike planned for the next day. But I’d suggest coming on a clear day if you can. The landscape is stunning with interesting volcanic rock formations from the big eruption of Mount Asama, and you can even spot seasonal plants and flowers growing near the lava. It really reminds you of the power and beauty of nature.
Right at the center of the park, there’s a Buddhist temple dedicated to Kannon, linked to Ueno’s Kaneiji Temple in Tokyo. There are also souvenir shops and a restaurant. Parking is free.
Maria — Google review
Great view over Mount Asama as well as the lava rocks that were formed from the eruption of the volcano. We headed there around noon on a Saturday, and the park was still pleasantly quiet and there were not many others around, making it a very peaceful experience. There are several trails to choose from within the park, with several sitting areas along the way.
Access-wise, Seibu buses run straight from Karuizawa station, but infrequently, especially on weekends.
Vicky Ng — Google review
It is a place where you can feel the earth is alive. The air is still. You should reserve at least one hour to walk the longest route slowly. You can see a plume of smoke at the top of Mt. Asama. You will be able to reconfirm that this mountain is an active volcano.
Taiju Suzuki — Google review
In addition to looking at the landscape lights of volcanic lava, the surrounding scenery is also very good.
Since the distance is far from the urban area, and it is very dark in autumn and winter, it is also recommended that you come to visit earlier.

Mugonkan is a small museum showcasing poignant artwork created by art students who lost their lives in WWII. The entrance fee is 1000 yen, but it's worth the visit to see not just scribbles and sketches, but also masterpieces on display alongside personal effects of the artists. The exhibition highlights the futility of Japan's war and how it tragically wasted young lives and cultural heritage.
A great museum in the middle of the hills. The art on display are impressive. There are 2 buildings actually, first one is on the top filled with the display of arts and old photos of the students, then in the second one you will find another paintings display and the following library.

We went all the way out to this place, which doesn't look so big from outside, to find the admission was 1000 yen and almost didn't go in. So glad we did, although the exhibits are almost unbearably sad. You might expect scribbles and sketches from art students, but there are some straight up masterpieces on display along with personal effects of some of the artists. It really drives home the futility of Japan's war and how much it wasted not only young lives but the cultural inheritance of all humanity.

(Translated by Google) This Mugonkan opened in 1997 (Heisei 9). It's been a long time since I last visited Ueda with a friend. I have been to the museum several times, but once again I felt a strange feeling that it was a combination of an art museum, a memorial facility for fallen art students, and a church.
Inside the museum, the museum director travels around the country to visit the families of art students who died in the war, and the paintings and belongings of the art students who died in the war are collected and displayed. Literally, there is a ``silent'' space, where the artist's posthumous works do not say anything, nor do the viewers speak.
I saw it on TV and in the news before.
Kirin Kiki had contact with Mugonkan during her lifetime, and after her death, she had contact with Sayuri Yoshinaga, and it seems that she still has contact with her daughter, Yako.
Mugonkan learned the folly of war and prayed for peace to last forever. This is a place you should definitely visit at least once.

Or died of illness during the war, etc., their youth stopped in their twenties and thirties, and their works during their school days no longer had the opportunity to continue to grow and accumulate.
Photography is not allowed in the museum, and the Wuyan Museum also displays letters home from art students, even death certificates issued by the military, or consolation payments from the government. We often say that art has nothing to do with politics, but an art student with a paintbrush in his hand goes to the battlefield and is forced to pick up the murder weapon. In the end, he has no chance to return to the drawing board; the same story can be changed to literature students and medical students. War has never been a matter only for politicians and high-level officials. Ordinary people have no way of saying that it is none of their own business and can stay out of it.
It's the same in any war. Makes you speechless…

Located on the Shiraito Highland Way in Karuizawa, the falls are a delightfully large, arched waterfall that offers stunning views in multiple seasons. A popular spot for sightseeing, visitors can enjoy hiking to see the falls from different angles.
Worth the bus ride from karuizawa station there, which runs quite infrequently. It's along a windy road uphill, so even without snow it would not be easy to get there walking or cycling.
The falls is actually only about 3 to 4 meter tall, but nonetheless quite beautiful, especially when covered in snow. Short 5 min walk, though a bit slippery, from bus stop to the falls, so 30 to 45 min is sufficient for a visit. Small shop at the bus stop for drinks, washroom, souvenir whilst waiting for return bus.

The path leading up to the falls is well-maintained and easy to walk. A stream runs down from the main waterfall and along the side of the trail, making for a lovely walk to the main waterfall. The dirt track is slightly uphill, so recent rains can make it slippery. For this reason, I recommend wearing good walking shoes. The falls are beautiful and accessible year round. The fee is ¥500 to enter for parking.

it’s stunning little waterfalls which only required a few minutes walk from the parking spot. the surrounding area is beautiful and photogenic. although the waterfalls is a bit small and not natural but i would still recommend for a visit if you’re in the area

You can come here by paying a toll road of 500 yen. At first I was dissatisfied with it, but when I think about it as a parking lot fee, I guess I can understand it. There was quite a parking space. Since Shiraito is called Shiraito, I imagined a large waterfall falling beautifully, but when I arrived, I was surprised. It was a waterfall with spring water leaking from the middle of the ground. I had never seen a waterfall like this before, so I was glad to see it. The waterfall is wide and it must be a very cool place in the summer. I think it's a waterfall worth seeing. However, I thought that a name like ``Mikasa no Yutaki'' would be more appropriate than ``Shiraito Falls''. 2024.4.25

It’s not a very large fall, but it will impress you. The nature is so beautiful here. The waterfall sound is pacifier of visitors’ mind.
Well, visitors have to pay 500 yen for parking. There is some souvenir shops. I visited there at the evening and there were lots of visitors. So it was a bit difficult to take photos because of the crowd.

The walk to the waterfall is quite easy and straightforward. The riverside is lined with a lot of interesting-lookijg insects, which was interesting in its own way.

Lovely waterfall site. Only 3 metres high, but a vast 70 metres wide. Park up at the bottom of the short pathway. Very popular with lots of tourists visiting. Amazing to see the water flowing from up above somewhere.

I've Googled my place here since we were driving on this trip. Three parking spots available. We came by near to 5 so the crowd has dispersed and the shops are almost closing. A quick walk-in to this beautiful waterfall view. Would highly recommend people to drop by. Best to wear anti-slip shoes during winter as there's a small slope to climb up.

This waterfall is really impressive. I recommend getting there before the shops open if you want to enjoy taking a few photos without anyone else in them. The place gets very crowded. Parking is free and it’s a 5 minute walk from your car. But there is a toll of 500 yen to use the road that gets you there. It’s worth it though.

Tranquil. The water comes out from the soil is just amazing to see it. There is also a hiking route. You need to take a bus to get there and it cost 720¥.

What a beautiful, refreshing spot!
No actual river flows into the Falls. The source of water is the rain that falls on Mount Asama, which takes about 6 years to come out. Regardless of the season, there’s always a constant flow of water.
We visited in mid-July during the weekend, and it was a bit crowded. If you are driving, please note there’s a 500 yen toll, but parking is free.

A beautiful and scenic spot with waterfalls. They’re only 3m high but span around 75m.
It is up a private mountain road from Karuizawa. Tolls are chargeable and the road isn’t well maintained.
But parking is free. If you drive you can stop to take some pics along the way.
Alternatively lines 1, 2 and 8 reach there from the main station. The ride is about 20 mins and cost 720 yen.
Falls are up a short uphill walk.
There are kiosks selling warm food and a WC near the parking lot to the falls.

A waterfall where water from melting snow gushes out from the ground over several years.
It's not very dynamic, but it's very beautiful and the sound of water and the cool space are soothing.

Shiraito Waterfall: It took approximately 36 minutes by bus from Karuizawa station, followed by a brief 2-minute walk, to reach the waterfall. I visited on December 31st. I recommend visiting during the fall season to witness the vibrant colors as a backdrop or in late winter when the waterfall is adorned with snow. However, for a December visit, I found the extended travel time for this particular view to be less satisfying.

Even in winter it’s worth visiting! It takes around 5-10 minutes to get to the waterfall from the car park and you can experience the water being warm despite the cold weather due to volcanic activity in this area 😱 If you’re going there by car on a snowy day, be careful because the road can get very slippery!

Visiting Saitaro Waterfall was an enchanting experience that left me in awe of nature's beauty. Nestled amidst lush greenery, the waterfall cascades down gracefully, creating a serene atmosphere that instantly soothes the soul. The sound of rushing water combined with the fresh scent of the forest rejuvenated my senses. The trek to reach the waterfall was adventurous yet manageable, offering picturesque views along the way. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or simply seeking tranquility, Saitaro Waterfall is a must-visit destination. Beautiful water falls and stream. Plenty of free parking and a just a short uphill walk. There's restrooms and a small shop at the entrance as well. It is located on a toll road so make sure to have some cash for that on hand. It's a lovely drive to get there as well. Lovely trees that form a bit of a tunnel with their branches over the road. It's almost 7-8 km from the karuizawa station. Bus facility is there but please do check the schedule. We took a taxi from price hotel resort for around 2400¥ . And while returning back we took a bus for approx. 500¥.( 25mins) place is calm with natural water reservoir. we couldn't explore due to lack of time but one Indian/ Nepali restaurant is there and few other's too. We went to " Sawamura bakery and restaurant" food was good. Especially black coffee, freshly baked variety bread basket and kids plate !! Kids plate was wholesome and nutritious. Our 5 yrs old could eat a half of it !! Staff was very kind and considerate. We decided to sit outside even on a cold windy afternoon. But she put on a heaters, handed over blankets to cover our legs and offered kids high chair too. There is a famous onsen just a walk away from this place.

Stone Church, located in Karuizawa, is a captivating architectural gem that seamlessly blends natural surroundings with man-made design. This stunning church was built as a memorial to Uchimura Kanzo and was designed by American architect Kendrick Kellogg. The unique structure features stone and glass arches of increasing size, creating a solemn atmosphere illuminated by sunlight. It's an exemplary display of organic architecture, prioritizing harmony with nature.

Lots of shops to see and lots of little streets to walk down, but since we went during winter (mid Feb), many of the shops were closed. Most of the shops here also open only 11am onwards, so try not to visit too early if not you'd have nothing to do.
Perhaps this street (or area) is more of a summery street for visiting! I saw bike rental areas nearer to Prince Shopping Centre side, and I assume it's because there's actually a lot to see in this side of Karuizawa! For winter, maybe not as much.
Highlights of the Old Karuizawa Ginza Street would be shops selling honeys and jams. There are quite a few of these shops, so don't make a hasty decision in entering the first shop and buying things there. Feel free to walk around a bit more and just note down the shops that you like.

Came in mid dec 2022. It was really cold since we are pretty high up in the mountains and that was winter. And due to it being the winter months, some businesses were closed till spring due to lower tourist numbers. However having visited the place in Oct 2018, the lack of any large crowds did make the tourist experience slightly better since it was easier to find seats at local dining spots. Do be careful of snow and sleet in the winter months as it’s a slipping hazard around the area. Even though it rained in the morning, it cleared up by the afternoon and the views of the street was really beautiful.

Kumoba Pond, also known as Kumobaike or "Swan Lake," is a popular destination in Karuizawa, Japan. Legend has it that the pond was formed by rainwater filling the footprint of a giant from nearby Mount Asama. Tourists and photographers flock to this modest pond seasonally to witness its stunning display of autumn leaves, making it a must-see spot for koyo (fall foliage) in Karuizawa.

Visited Kumoba pond on 11 Nov 2022 and we were quite lucky to catch some of the autumn leaves during our short visit there. It’s probably best to check the reviews around the dates you intend to visit because I imagine it might not be really worth a visit in the winter or when the trees are barren. Also, when we were driving, there were some roadworks and the construction workers told us to continue driving us (and didn’t seem to allow us to turn in) so we ended up parking quite a distance away. However as we walked towards the pond we realised the carpark right by the pond was still open for parking! Make sure you double check with them.

There is no entrance fee and it is open anytime. The middle part of the pond is not impressive and there are lots of mosquitoes.
However, there is no parking for cars. The nearest coin parking is about 1 km from the entrance. Some people rented a bicycle and just go there. I guess that’s the best way or you can just walk.
There are several restaurant and cafe nearby. There’s a cozy restaurant beside the pond.

Lake Suwa, situated in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, is a serene body of water with a circumference of 16.2 kilometers and an elevation of 759 meters. Suwa Garasu-no-Sato (Glass Museum) is a contemporary exhibit of exceptional glass artistry, situated on the banks of Lake Suwa. The museum offers a cafe, workshops, and local gifts for sale. Visitors can enjoy an exhibition of hanabi paintings in light of COVID-related cancellations. The artists' creativity with glass is truly inspiring. While entrance fees vary depending on group size, the small space offers an extensive selection of souvenirs at the gift shop below.
This site has some amazing glass and painting art. Super good for buying some presents for people back home. Great building too
kristjan sorensen — Google review
The museum itself is small, just one room for the big pieces, but many are remarkable. They have what they proclaim is the world's biggest crystal ball and it looks likely true. Beautiful glass sphere. Other small pieces are around hallways etc.
The gift shop is big with glass items and some food, and several craft rooms come off it. We made a candle, where you use coloured sand and little pretty glass ornaments to make a scene in a glass jar, and wait for one hour for them to pour very clear wax into it.
It is not cheap, every little ornament is 440yen, plus the cost of the jar etc. is 2500 to 3500 yen.
My daughter also made a glass stamp that she drew and they used a machine to sand blast away what she didn't draw.
Pretty cool.
Also an ice cream stand is there, nice maple caramel ice cream.
And a bakery/restaurant we didn't try.

Lovely glass museum on the shores of lake suwa with a restaurant and gift shop. No English signs, had to translate with my phone. The Suwa Taisha Upper Main Shrine (Kamisha Honmiya) is a vast complex comprising wooden Shinto shrines, worship halls, and sculptures located in the serene forest of mountain foothills. The site is well-maintained by staff dressed in traditional attire who perform blessings such as safe travels for visitors. The shrine stamps are available here, adding to the experience. The sumo shrines are also worth visiting.
Visited this famous shrine in Nagano every new year these years. Love the atmosphere and you can eat and shop along the way to the shrine. Parking area is too busy during new year holiday but lucky enough to fine some vacancy a bit far from the spot.
Cecilia Chen — Google review
We enjoyed this shrine very much, tranquilly located on the edge of a forest and seemingly in harmony with the grand, towering trees that surround it. It is hard to appreciate Shinto shrines if you are not Japanese, or don't have a cultural and aesthetic understanding of their meaning, architecture and significance. But this one is just naturally attractive even if, like us, you have little understanding of what you are looking at. So much beautiful wood in the construction, and a pleasing absence of the signage that seems ubiquitous at many such places and that so badly mars the aesthetics.
Easy to get to by car, with free parking available nearby. Not sure how to go about getting here by public transport.
Howard Banwell — Google review
This was a huge complex. I liked how everyone was dressed in traditional clothes and taking care of the site. It was cool to see a blessing being performed for safe travels for a truck driver and his companion. I was able to get the shrine stamps here. Everything was so well kept. I liked the sumo shrines that where as well which was cool. After visiting here I ate some nice jelly like noodles at a nearby shop which was perfect for the very hot day.

Sophie Solioz — Google review
I visited in late January. One one hand it appears run-down—some structures were off-limits due to renovation, but on the other, it just feels really ancient. I did a little bit of research on this place prior to visiting (as we should, to appreciate the place more), and I knew this shrine is very culturally significant and one of the main ones in the country. It’s considered a power spot by many, but the only power I felt was the cold fingers of winter tucking themselves down behind my neck. It was cold. This shrine is one of the Suwa shrines that house the sacred logs that some brave, brave people ride down a mountainside during a festival that’s held every 6 years or so. I forget the name. I’m writing this on my phone half-dizzy after a strenuous hike.

Suwa Grand Shrine (Japanese: 諏訪大社 Hepburn: Suwa taisha), historically also known as Suwa Shrine (諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja) or Suwa Daimyōjin (諏訪大明神), is a Shinto shrine in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is considered to be one of the oldest shrines in existence, being implied by the Nihon Shoki to already stand in the late 7th century. It certainly carries a pride of place and there are thousand year old trees around the shrine. Set in a peaceful tranquil forest. A Shinto ceremony was held as we passed by for a large Japanese company and its staff.

Booked at the last minute as a weekend escape and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Some parts of the hotel are a little old, but it’s clean and well-maintained. Some rooms have been renovated, and the main dining area and lobby are nice. All staff were friendly and polite. The hotel has an observatory and you can see stars when the weather is good. There was also a piano concert in the lobby when we stayed. There’s a pond and garden where you can take a stroll, and the hot spring and sauna are very relaxing. Nestled in the natural beauty of Yamanashi, the Yatsugatake Resort Outlet Mall offers a unique shopping experience with a backdrop of outdoor adventures. The mall features a variety of stores, including popular brands like Avirex, which often offer generous sales. While some shops have closed down, there are still three recommended outdoor stores to explore: Hardware, Colombia, and an Italian brand. The setting amidst the forest is picturesque and provides ample parking.
Avirex is one of our favorite brand. The sales lady was very kind and it was a lucky day yesterday because of the huge sale not only on Avirex but on most of the stores.
We went here during weekdays so it was a slack day and there were only few shoppers but I like it that way, we had a lot of time to choose without minding the cost and the limited items.
Angeli Rose Kajihara — Google review
This place used to be really enjoyable shopping mall, but now it’s dying out. Most tenants have left and there are a lot of vacant place. It doesn’t deserve to be visited at all, now. On top of that, free parking became toll parking. It was another disappointing point.

Compact in size and major brand shops are missing but it’s like shopping in the middle of a forest and it feels good. The whole place closes at 7pm and dinner has to be pretty early if you want to eat there. Coupon discount with highway toll is available, and will save you almost the one way toll for shopping coupon!

It’s autumn season and I love the halloween themed park! Pumpkins are decorated, there is a spot in the center of the park where you can get a really good pumpkin photo in aerial view lookout, and it was a bit cold so we had some S'mores outside! Coffee and cocoa were also available. Great place to get photo taken and if you love to go on a nature walk.

If you're a whiskey enthusiast visiting Yamanashi, the Suntory Hakushu Distillery is a must-visit destination. Here, you can delve into the rich history and craftsmanship behind Hakushu Single Malt Whiskey while immersing yourself in its cultural significance. Expert staff will guide you through the distillery, allowing you to experience the sights, smells, and sounds of whiskey production.
Did a remote tour of the distillery and it was great! The attached photos are the remote tour “kit” that they deliver shortly before the Zoom tour. The tour is entirely in Japanese, so some language ability is required. Very informative and very good! Looking forward to visit in person.
Zachary Hubbell — Google review
A nice whiskey distillery tour. The tour of manufacturing process is good, probably there is somewhere better but this tour is good enough if I’m really honest. If you don’t speak Japanese, you will have a headset with different languages recordings.
What makes this tour different is the fact that they spends quite a lot of time in the tasting sessions. It explains the whiskey flavour profile in a lots more details compared to all of my previous tours in different distilleries/ château. Also the tasting session was done in a nicely decorated room which make the whole experience better! And one of the highlights is the paid whiskey tasting in the bar! You can try those rare/ old whiskey in a reasonable price such 30 years Hibiki at ¥5000. On top, you can purchase 1 bottle of Hakushu at retail which is a must buy! Definitely worth visiting!
Jason Fung — Google review
Being a huge whisky fan, it is an honour to be able to visit the distillery. Do book in advance to get a tour (where a guide will share about the distillery in Japanese, they have a phone which English translation is provided). If you can't get a tour, you can book to visit the distillery on your own.
The best part is to try out their whisky and unfortunately only 3 types are served per pax. I wish I could drink more as I love their whisky a lot.
This distillery is simply amazing whereby we got to see the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes.
Song Yong Low — Google review
Really neat distillery, highly recommend visiting if you can, just make sure you make reservations online as far in advance as possible. The tasting afterwards was fun. Get to the store before the tour if planning to buy whiskey since they will sell out of the daily quota quickly.
Bryan Harris — Google review
This is by far one of the best Japanese single malts I have ever tasted, it’s got the light colour and distinct island taste. Perfectly paired with Japanese foods especially teppanyaki.
Sathish Umapathy — Google review
Good experience go on the tour of the Distillery. It is in Japanese but foreigners are given a hand held device in their selected language. The bar has many Suntory brand whisky to offer and at amazing prices, many not found even in bars in Tokyo. The water they offer at the bar is directly from the mountain and it was delicious, best tasting water ever!
Only disappointment is there is no whisky to be bought at their shop. Many other souvenirs though. Have to go early as the bar and shop close at 4:30pm. We were rushed.
Carnivore HK — Google review
I gotta say, this distillery is one of the Best distilleries I’ve visited in Japan! Its set in a serene and beautiful forest and the dram it produces is one of most sought after in the world!
I highly recommend the ¥1000 whisky tour as they take you on a beautiful journey around the distillery plus the free tasting and highball making class at the end is well worth it.
Downside is it’s a bit of a trek to get here, as the free shuttle is not as frequent as you’d expect!
Tip: cost efficient way to get to get here is to buy a 5 day Flexi JR East pass. this pass will cover you for travel for all Tokyo JR lines, won’t cover you travelling west to Osaka or Kyoto.
Fastest way to get here is a train from Shinjuku to Kobuchizawa and take the free shuttle. If you miss the shuttle the taxi is the best bet price estimate - ¥1500-¥2000.
PS: there’s no aged whisky or any hakushu at this distillery. They only have the Chita for ¥3500 or so.
Ed Li — Google review
I was fortunate enough to snag a tasting and factory tour spot while I was in Japan. Pretty easy to get to. Learning about their history and their process of making whisky was inspiring. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. We went in a storage building and the first thing that hits you is the smell of the aging whisky. It’s not a smell for everyone, but it smelt good to me. In the end we got to make our own highballs. The best part was their bar. You can select 3 glasses at a time from their bar selection. I’ve picked some really good ones and then treated myself for another round. I would most likely go back.
Chris Payne — Google review
Totally worth the trip out here. The tour was very well presented and educational. After the tasting you get to check out the taste bar and try some of the best whiskeys in the world for a very reasonable price. Only negative was there weren't any bottles of whiskey for sale. Overall, still an amazing experience!!

Ojiragawa Canyon is a picturesque location that offers scenic forest trails along a mountain stream with waterfalls and a wooden suspension bridge. It is an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts with photogenic shrines and crystal clear waters. Although the rocky terrain can pose challenges for those without proper hiking shoes, it is still worth visiting. The Southern Alpur region boasts natural waters that are refreshing even during midsummer, providing relaxation and mental rejuvenation to visitors.
Must go waterfall in Yamanashi. Only 15min walk from car. End of April We went late afternoon when the sunlight was cutting into the gorge. Had the whole place to ourselves (probably added to the magic). OMG 🤯
I've heard it gets crowded in summer.
Shinya Ueda — Google review
One of my absolutely favourite places which I visited every year. After the bridge the path to the left leads to Kaikomagatake - to the right to the waterfalls. So far I only made it to 3rd. The path is a bit steep and can be slippery after the rain. Why not stay at the 1st one instead and enjoy the river?
Sadly, I have to mention how shocking japanese visitor's behavior is. They are very loud, scream and shout, disrespectful of your personal space, squeeze past you, get just in front obscuring view, step over your things. Many people leave beer cans and plastic bags behind. This behaviour has to stop if japanese wants to continue advertising themselves as polite and well mannered people.

A beautiful waterfall next to a shrine. A traditional place for Shugendo training and worship, from what I heard. A short walk from the parking and a steep but also short up and down to get to the waterfall. Better take a bear-bell to make sure you’re safe. One of the must see places if you’re after places like that near Hokuto, Yamanashi.

Lovely place for nature lovers. The shrine is photogenic. There's a short suspension bridge that's fun to cross. The place is rocky and getting to the falls can be quite tricky witghout hiking shoes. Would recommend for hiking or just chilling in nature.

The best place to beat the brutal humid Summer. I am guessing that it is not very well known outside the prefecture (My Japanese friend had to explain the location to a reasonably well traveled friends of her).
The crystal clear water near the waterfall is the highlight of this place and you can also do a short adventurous climb right up to the waterfall. There are no restrictions here but do take care of yourself because the rocks can hurt.
There is a not very high diving spot which I recommend but triple check the exact landing spot because there are rocks around the place. We were here for 4 hours and did not feel bored at all.
I do not think there are Buses to this spot so Car/Taxi are your best choices.

Shosenkyo Ropeway is a popular attraction that offers gondola rides up to the summit of a forested mountain, providing visitors with breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. The trek up to the panoramic view spot does not have any rails or side guards, which may pose a risk for small children and elderly individuals without good balance. Convenient parking is available, and even if the lot is full, there's another one on the left.
Ropeway will take you to the summit. View from the top is unbeatable. Souvenir shop near the ropeway ticket counter is good.

The cable car runs at a 20 minute interval. The view on the top is breathtaking. The best park of the park I say. You can skip the hike and just drive up to the ropeway station and ride it up and spend your day on top. Bring lunch and snacks. The variety of meals and snacks at the shops are very limited.
The gift shop and koi pond at the base station is also worth the trip.

Really nice view of Fuji-san. The trek up to the view spot (panoramic pic posted here) was a nice small trek but be careful as there are no rails or side guards on the trail. Small kids and elderly who don’t have good balance could be a risk.
Parking was very convenient and even if the parking lot is full, drive a bit more to see another parking lot on the left (saw this while walking to the waterfall).
When you arrive, be cautious as the cable car sways back and forth. Not a big issue but it is something to notice when exiting the car.
Even on a cold day, we enjoyed the (blueberry?) soft ice cream while waiting for the cable car back down. Very tasty!

Came on a weekend morning. A few people queuing but still didn’t wait long. The ride up is quiet and short. Once in the top you can do a 20-minute walk to the boulders at the very top that offer a great view of Kofu, Minami Alps and if clear enough, Mt. Fuji. Both ways is 1300 per person, so the entire experience is not bad. It is not a really popular place, so it feels very nice to be away from the crowds.

Only about a 2 minute trip to the top. Feels safe and secure, no excessive rocking. Views at the top are nice, but not much else to do there. The golden koi pond there is however a fun highlight

Suntory's main winery, located on a vast site of approximately 1.5 million square meters with a vineyard measuring around 250,000 square meters, was acquired by Suntory's predecessor Kotobukiya in 1936. The winery is situated up an open mountain road and boasts a large terrace that offers views of the city of Kofu and the vineyards. Visitors can purchase various Suntory wines at the shop, including rare noble rot wines.
Very nice place. The farm view from the winery shop is beautiful. Up in the mountain we can see the city in the valley. Wine tasting is a good option to discover the potential of Suntory winery. A Japanese winery that actually has decent wine and even better views. Growing up in the Napa Valley area its always been hard to find good wine without being too picky, but the Koshu wine they make is very refreshing and designed to pair well with Japanese cuisine The customer service at the shop is also very good and tried to help my parents even with limited English skills!
What trumps the tasting, though, is the amazing views of Mt. Fuji and the cherry blossoms in spring!

Avalokitesvara is a central figure in Buddhism who is the compassion of all Buddhas and the Bodhisattva of compassion. A Bosatsu has abandoned the self-interest of their own rest in Nirvana / Nibbana to continue in service to all sentient beings. Buddhist teachings from Nichiren in the 1200's have emphasized Lotus Sutra and have led to proliferation of statuary showing the wide variety of forms of the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

The overwhelming collapse preservation gravel and the scenery of the mountains were wonderful
Text
I visited when I visited Shioyu Onsen.
The collapsed preserved gravel looked a little artistic, and the sight that would have been formed by the collapse of many rocks was overwhelming, including its scale and size.
Also, when I looked at the other side from the collapsed gravel, the Koshibu River flowed in the center, and the mountains surrounded it, and the scenery reminiscent of a valley spread out.
Mt. Akaishi with snow-covered scenery in the distance, combined with the vast, idyllic and natural scenery
It was a very nice view.
I visited at a time when it seemed out of winter, so it was very quiet and healed with few people.
However, I think that the scenery ahead will be more beautiful when it comes to the spring and fresh green seasons.
It was a better place than I expected. Also, if I have a chance to come to Oshika, I would like to stop by.

I noticed that there was something that looked like a park at the foot of the mountain across the river from the parking lot in front of the restaurant "Deer Eater" that appeared in the movie "Oshika Village Incident", so I googled it. Turn around the intersection near the roadside station Oshika Village and go up to the big parking lot 🅿.
It is said that it was built to pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the great mountain collapse that occurred in 1963, and for the reconstruction of the village. Unfortunately, there was no one there due to the rain, but you can see Oshika Village along the river. Fairly standard (meaning well serviced) service area. There is a viewing platform from which you can see Fuji on a clear day.

Pretty large SA. There is an observatory, which is about 15 m high. You can enjoy the view of the mountains, including Mt.Fuji. You can walk to the other side SA. You can also go to the SA by car if you use ETC EXIT.

Really nice rest stop, with toilets, restaurants, omiyage-shops and a tower where you can observe the area as well as the gorgeous view of Mt.Fuji
中込農園is one of the best farms in Japan. I really enjoyed staying there. The farm have wide variety of fruits in premium quality including peach, apple, grape, nectarine, cherry, pear, persimmon and plum. Honestly the fruits are the best I've ever try in my life. Besides, the hospitality of Kazu san and his staffs makes the experience even better. It is especially suitable for family or friends gathering. The price of fruit picking is reasonable and there are plenty of car parking space. After fruit picking, it is always nice to take a walk in the downtown Yamanashi. I'm sure you will like it!

I love Nakagomi Orchard. At the end of July, my family and friends went there to pick the peaches. This is my first time to visit the peach orchard. There are so many peach trees, we can climb up the ladder to pick the top/good one which faces the sun that Cham told us. She also let us taste the golden peaches too. All the peaches were very delicious and juicy.
Thank you Cham!

Would not visit this place again. Totally dissapointed with the service. we reached early around 1300 (our appointment is 1330) and we were at the right place but there is nobody to receive us. Thus, we thought we were at the wrong location as there is no parking lots at the specified location. we ended up going round and round for an HOUR to find the location. In the end, we called the host and found out that the fruit picking session is cancelled due to the rain. (We did not call earlier because we are unable to stop the car on one side and there was no parking lots) But on their website, they indicated that they will not cancel (unless it is a heavy storm) as their fruit picking farms are sheltered. It was raining on that day but clearly it is not a heavy storm. I understand that they have the rights to cancel the session last minute but it would be great if they can at least drop us a call or an email notifying us of the cancellation. Because of this, we wasted one whole day worth of time and money just to make plans to go to the farm (including car rental). Totally very disappointing. Definitely would not visit this farm again.

If it is in season, this is a great place to go for fruit picking.
We went for peaches on July 4th. Being the middle of the week, we did not need reservations. On the weekends, I would not think of it without a reservation.
The people there are friendly. For the peaches, it was like most every other orchard I've been to. Either pick the fruit from the trees, or they have some in cooler.
They speak English, so it is very foreigner friendly.
Convenient enough to get to, but far out of the way at the same time.
Can't wait for the grapes to come in!

The best fruit picking orchard in Japan!! I always come here and have the best time. It is very worth it for a day trip from tokyo. Just take the highway bus from shinjuku and it is so easy. The fruit was soo tasty 🍒

I did my 1st volunteering farm work for about 10 days in Nakagomi Orchard. The farm works I did were fruits picking, weeding, trimming, packing, and putting down the silver sheet. Human efforts are much needed to produce high quality fruits. Kazusan talked about the farming knowledge as he was guiding me to do the farm work. I tried many sweet and juicy peaches during my stay! Besides, Yokosan cooked delicious dinner for the volunteers! The staffs in the orchard are friendly and willing to chat! A big thanks to Takasan, Marysan, Kennichisan, Kensan, Kazusan and Yokosan! I'm appreciated that I was given a chance to experience my very first farming in Nakagomi Orchard!

This is really a great place! They have multiple locations with different fruits. I went here for the grape picking and eating. It was about ¥2,000 for two hours of all you can eat grapes. That’s more than enough time to fill yourself up. They were so good! I ate about three bunches. They seat you at a table and give you scissors for cutting, gloves and a plate to put your grapes on. It’s very popular so I recommend going early in the season because if you want to take some home, you can’t if you go at the end of the season. As an aside it’s cheaper to go there in person and pay, reserving it on Jaran is more expensive.

There are many different kinds of fruit for picking from June to November. I visited Nakagomi Orchard in August 2019 for peach and grapes picking. Their fruit are so wonderful and delicious. It was really an enjoyable experience to enjoy such high quality of fruit at Nakagomi Orchard. Fresh air, friendly staffs of the orchard and beautiful fresh fruit on the trees that I will come back again for sure.
