Shirakawa-go is a historical village tucked away in a remote mountainous area that boasts traditional Gassho-style farmhouses. As one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, it is a must-visit for any tourist. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of the village makes it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It was nice. Seeing the traditional homes in that region up close was spectacular. There are plenty of shops to visit and buy reasonable priced trinkets. We stopped by the restaurant nearest to the entrance parking lot and had lunch. It was lovely.

Beautiful village!!!
It would be best if you can find a place and stay for a night near the village. You can visit it early in the morning next day. No crowded tourist before 8:30am.
There are few restaurant near by but only 1 open after 7:30pm. So be prepare and have your dinner before that.

A really scenic and peaceful place. Lots to see and do. There are many tourists that come here, however the place is so big, it's no big deal. As part of our tour, we also had a delicious meal. If you are in the region, definitely add this place to your list.

Nice, calm, beautiful area. Can have a lot of people walking around, but the vibe is rather pleasant and everyone seems to respect these lovely surroundings. We have a room with a back window looking right out over a wonderful stream. If you do your research and set the right expectations, I think you will love including a visit here within your regional travel plans.

I was amazed at this well presented Heritage town! The houses still accommodate the locals & stay over tourists. That was us!😊
The locals are early morning risers due to the thousands of tourists that converge during the day. I observed the locals dog walking, gardening & general outdoor cleaning in the early morning hours.
If you stay overnight, you really must arise early, you will have the village streets to yourself! We had a fabulous experience!

While this place is the most beautiful in wintertime, covered with snow, it is still very nice place to visit anytime of the year.
I visited Shiragawa-Go during Autumn and didn't disappoint. This place/village is very attractive. You can see why it is UNESCO world heritage site. People preserved old architecture, and village very well so you can feel like you warp to the past.

Great heritage area. Lots to look at and learn about how the locals lived. Went in early April and it was a clear fresh day. Could be done in a t-shirt except for the strong winds when crossing the foot beidge. Highly recommend if you have at least 3+ hours in the area

Came here on late spring.
One of the Unesco World Heritage. A must visit.
A historical village that secluded beyond the mountain. It was a calm, serene, peaceful.
You need to go up to the hill to see and enjoy the whole village area from above. It was too beautiful.
The river and the water ditch sorround is super clear and clean as crystal

This is a traditional japanese village. It takes about 3-4 hours to cover the entire village. We visited here during early autumn. There is a bus to the observatory point. Cost is 200 JPY. But there is also a foot path to climb there. We used the bus to go uphill and used the footpath to come down. River side is very beautiful. Try to visit the museums if you are interested to see the historical things.

Well worth the bus ride (or rental car drive) to see these amazing houses built hundreds of years ago in a picturesque location. Spend at least 2-3 hours here to walk around and view the village, and grab a bite to eat or a souvenir. Visited on May 22, 2023.

You will need to buy a bus ticket in advance if you come with public transport. Also to go back. And keep in mind that everything closes at 4pm so it would be best to eat lunch around 12-1pm.

Nice little tourist area, deserted at night so make sure you get dinner early! We had a lovely quiet time there in the morning before the crowds started to com at around 9am when the museums open

Amazing place, it transports you to another time period almost. The people there were so welcoming to us, we had something to look at every step of the way around the village. Make sure to respect and follow the rules of the place (no trespassing, no littering, etc.)

Absolutely love this place! When going when its less crowded, it is very peaceful and tranquil feeling the cold wind on your skin while looking at the surrounding green mountains and the old fashioned village. Drain water is so clear and clean that there are fishes swimming in the drain! Definitely recommend to go up to the observatory either through hiking or a shuttle to observe and really appreciate the beauty of the landscape aswell as the village in its entirety! Definitely should go!
Myth Boi — Google review
Amazing place, big snow and magical scenario. Christmas time must go place. If you go with car, must need snow chain. All restaurants open and not over crowded. Way better to enjoy then any other season.

A little town with all the good feels.
The houses are lovely. Everything is walkable. Homes are fascinating too.
Homes have no signal nail and are known for their roof structure that look like praying hands.
I particularly loved the cafe where you see the Shirakawago scenery whilst drinking coffee.
There was also a lunch menu for 2000 Yen with hida beef set super yummy.
Everything is great and amazing in this lovely town.

Love the small village feel and the unique high pitched thatched roofed houses and the river nearby. Has a couple of houses that you can pay (400Y) to go inside and experience the past (Myozinji house built since 1748). Need at least 6 hours here for visit. Kids will love the trouts living in the gutters along the streets.
David EB — Google review
We made a three hour stop here on our way to Kanazawa by bus. It's a bit of a tourist spot and good for a one hour stop only. It has lots of toilets around the town and two small cafes if you want a coffee. We found one restaurant which was open. A very nice town with a lot of original houses and you can also go up to the observatory. When we went there was a very large number of tourists.
Keith Saunders — Google review
We were lucky to see some snow when we visited this unique village in the north of Gifu.
Very unique house design and there were shops and restaurants around the village.
It's such a famous tourist attraction spot that at the time when I visited, there were more tourists than locals living in this area.
I would definitely recommend coming here when it's snowing a lot more than the pictures here.
Nicholas Tan — Google review
We have visited this place before and I have also reviewed this place previously and so I will keep this one "short and sweet".
This time round, we allocated more time here as previously we only stopped by here for about an hour (after our visit to Takayama Old Town) but didn't have much time to roam the place.
We arrived slightly before 3pm. Weather was cold (but it was much colder later on when the sun set) but the river had not fully frozen like in our previous trip. It was quite comfortable to walk under the sun and yet very cold condition.
More shops were opened as it was weekday (our previous visit was on a Sunday and many shops were closed then). So we could walk around and shop for local foods and souvenirs.
We loved the scenery, lots of greenery and beautiful cottage houses, and our mother nature was just right around us!
Surely it was a wonderful revisiting trip on this UNESCO World Heritage site! Definitely worth it!
Ed Chung — Google review
A very quiet place for tourists to appreciate the old Japanese culture and architecture. The place is close to a number of local restaurants. We drove there on a weekday in March. Need to go through a lot of tunnels to reach there. Better equip with sun glasses because its tiring to drive among mountains with remaining snow. Both parking and restaurants are not too full. Kids can still hv snowball fights and build up snowman though we no longer could see snow on roof any more. Houses are close to each other and we could do some walking while not being too exhausted. Suggest to stay there for 2.5 hours including lunch. Love the place, being something different to visit in Japan.
Little Rach — Google review
A magical experience in this winter wonderland! It was snowing on Christmas Day! We had so much fun building a snowman. Many beautiful farm houses are covered in snow for great photos. Lots of souvenirs shops and little restaurants and dessert shops. The road leading up the observatory deck has turned icy, so need to walk slowly and carefully. The view from the observatory deck was breathtaking. It was an incline going up. Need to take breaks along the way. Don't forget to take pictures!
Jen Chan — Google review
Very nice old town of thatched roof houses. All made with wood and ropes, no nails used in the construction.
It was snowing which added to the magic.
We were there relatively early with our car but there were already lots of people around. It's nice and you spend an hour going around and up to the observatory point. Don't take the bus, use the short walkway by the side, much better views of the village.
Seb Camborieux — Google review
gorgeous ghasso town, we got so lucky with the snow (early march) - go to だんご屋 ゆたか on your way to the observation deck and try the sweet sake! so many places to eat in town and lots of cute souvenirs! make sure you buy a bus ticket back to where you’re going in advance (we got stranded for a few hours but we were lucky to get seats on the last bus)
Brit Thew — Google review
Visit in the winter peak so temperature was -5. Beautiful and fairytale-like village, make sure you have your time after 3pm or before 10am as all same day tourists would arrive from 10am and leave by 3pm. Observation deck has beautiful view but extremely crowded most of the time.
Truc Nguyen — Google review
Ranks high in my favorite places visited so far. Went for a day trip (winter season) and instantly fell in love. Regretted not staying longer and will definitely visit again.
I am in awe at how the locals protect this heritage site. The town looks mystical from afar. If you’re into heritage tourism then this is a place you shouldn’t miss.
There are food stalls and souvenir shops available.

Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.
Florian Guillemard — Google review
Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

It's not just the museum. It's the whole town that has a good relaxing vibe. The exhibitions are nice and precise. The restaurant has a nice view and good foods. The museum shop has a variety of interesting souvenirs. The surrounding area of the museum is phoenomenon, mountains, stream, lavander field, rice field, etc. It's a good decision to come here instead of the Tokyo location. The Totochan square Chihiro park is also nice for book fans. You can't take photos inside the exhibition halls but outside and in the hallway it's fine.

Daio Wasabi Farm is a picturesque and popular tourist attraction in Azumino, Japan, that features a river, windmills, and cafe. The farm produces up to ten percent of Japan's wasabi production, which is real wasabi - a world away from the tame, tubed stuff served at cheap soba and sushi restaurants.
The area was very nice to walk around for about 45 minutes. I’d recommend stopping by to try a few of the wasabi treats. My favorite was the wasabi beer and the wasabi ice cream. I’d go for the expensive option for the ice cream as it comes with a bit of wasabi to mix with every bite. Definitely the best ice cream that I’ve ever had. I also tried the croquette but, even though it was nice, it didn’t have a lot of a wasabi taste. The surrounding area is very nice in the autumn and one of the better wasabi farms to visit.

1. Good scenery but nothing much to see. Little explaination board provided. Not sure if it is because of the season or the time I visited the place but many shops were close during my visit.
2. The retail is with little variety of merchandise.
3. The toilet design is fanciful and it is worth a visit

I came in the middle of September, but it was still very hot and I was drenched in sweat.
There are various shops, so you can also enjoy gourmet food.
It's a very interesting place as there are explanations about the historical flow.
You can bring your dog with you, so I think it's a great place for people with dogs.

Very quite on a Monday 3pm. Guess this is not the peak for the growing season.
Tried the wasabi beer- ok
The wasabi ice cream was good, very good. Tempura wasabi was good too. All was very reasonable price. Entry was free. Gift shop was excellent.

The visit is free, there's only the plantation to see but indications about wasabi's growth. But it's nice there's panels with the direction to make walks. There's Wasabi ice-cream and restaurants. There's also a smoking area on the right side of the entrance.

Depending on the time of year of your visit, you probably can see more than we could. But still, interesting to see how wasabi is grown. And, of course, in the shop you can buy everything with wasabi. And have a wasabi ice.

Visited on 8/20. At this time of year, the wasabi fields are covered with black shades to protect against the heat.
I couldn't see wasabi, but the water is cool and the scenery is nice. The food was delicious too.
It is recommended because you can enjoy it for free.

I am glad we didn't miss visiting this wasabi farm. It is really an attraction for domestic tourists. There is plenty of parking but also many visitors. The farm covers a big area, but there is a path to guide you to where you can visit. Prepare to spend 2 hours here, including lunch. There is also a wasabi ice cream stall just outside the gift shop, which usually has a line.
There is a shallow river beside the farm and there is a boating activities but the price of 1200yen for adult and children is kinda steep for a mere 15mins

Went in winter. Even though wasabi was being covered, the view was fantastic and was able to view the alps. We went on 29th dec and it was not crowded even at 12-1pm!
We enjoyed the frankfurter, matcha beer, oyaki, ice cream. Plenty of souvenirs and was able to buy fresh wasabi as well.

Wasabi farm. Not many places in Japan that you can see wasabi has made. Recommended for family with kids and pets. Very huge parking lots available but it might take time to wait if you visit during weekend or public holidays.

Such a lovely serene farm to visit with a shallow clear babbling stream through it watering the wasabi plants. There were workers doing there thing and it was peaceful and pretty.
The wasabi ice cream was a treat too.
ToBe True — Google review
There are a couple of wasabi farms in the area but this one seems more popular, perhaps as it is the closest to the train station.
There are several walks there, as well as a wasabi statue. In the autumn season, there is one especially majestic tree all decked out in yellow. Do also check out the mills by the river with its clear crystal waters.
There are a couple of eateries, including a steak house and a rice pot eatery where you can mix the local wasabi, which you freshly ground, in. They serve wasabi ice cream and wasabi croquettes too.
Do visit the shop where you can buy locally made products and wasabi related items. The young wasabi smells nice but is not as pungent or spicy like commercial ones where mustard is added.
Getting there is relatively easy - you can get discounted taxi coupons for @1300 yen both ways from the tourism office, and then ask the wasabi farm staff to call a cab for your return to the train station.

Everything you wanted to ask about wasabi (but where afraid to ask)! In Azumino is the Daio Wasabi Nojo, with a surface of 15 hectares one of the largest wasabi farms in Japan. Ever since 1915, the wasabia japonica plants have been grown here in the clear, pebble-rich mountain streams, the raw material for the famous Japanese, spicy, green paste. Those who are hungry or thirsty can go to one of the restaurants where just about everything is prepared with wasabi, from a wasabi croquette to wasabi ice cream. A visit to this farm is fun, educational and delicious!

We went on a weekday in late August. You may not have time to enjoy it slowly if the tourist bus tours are concentrated as usual.

The famous wasabi ice cream has an elegant and refreshing spiciness that will make you addicted.

The landscape of the Japan Alps in the background from Hotaka Station to Daio Wasabi Farm was wonderful. Although some stretches of the route were quite narrow for pedestrians, the views of the lightly snow covered alpine was more than make up for it. The layout of the farm was impressive. We chose to visit on a weekday so the crowd was more sensible. Meals are available in 3 restaurants . We dined at The Oasis. The pork loin was well seasoned and cooked just right. Delicious. So was the beef rump. The wasabi goes well with the meat. The dessert set was lemon and wasabi cheesecake and lemon wasabi sorbet. Interesting combination. Love it.

The Daio Wasabi Farm is a great stop on your way to your destination. If you've ever wanted to know where Wasabi comes from and how it is "processed" this is the place.
The farm is interesting for its it waterways, windmills and waterwheels. Irrigation of the fields is also an interesting exploration.
There are a few eating options, a nice gift shop and plenty of public toilets.
There is also free parking on site.
This is a welcome stop away from the crowded touristy places in the area.
Matsumoto-jō Castle, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a 16th-century national treasure with striking black walls. Visitors can explore historical weapons exhibits and climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and snow-capped mountains. The castle grounds are adorned with maple and cherry trees, making it a popular spot for viewing red leaves and cherry blossoms in early November. The castle offers evening lighting events until 22:00.
Absolutely stunning castle.
You can get inside and see a lot of historical things including ancient guns and costumes. Photograph is prohibited inside the castle and you have to take shoes off.
A polythene bag is provided for carrying the shoes.
You can walk or get a bus from Matsumoto station.
Normally it doesn't take one hour to cover inside.
Staircases can be narrow and high angle(~70). So it makes nervous sometimes. but safe.
I suggest you to visit there around 3pm. so you see everything in daylight and have enough time to wait 6pm until Illumination starts.
I visited there 2022 Jan 5th and no snow that day

One of the few preserved original castles in Japan.
Along with an impressive firearm collection on display.
Not as big as Himeji, but that means you can take your time to look at the details, and still be able to do it within 2hrs.
Guests are required to take off their shoes and since there are only really steep stairs to walk up, make sure your socks are not too slippery.

Really amazing castle! I didn't go inside but it looks great with the park around. It's a really nice spot to just have a little drink and rest because of the great view! And it's also a bit cooler here in the summer than inside of the city.
Bram esendam — Google review
A good collection of ancient rifles. Good view through windows on the 6 floor. Not ideal for seniors with knee issues or weak legs as staircases are narrow, high, slippery and steep as much as 61°. Space within castle especially at upper levels are small and squeezy. Not recommended for families with toddlers as climbing up or down stairs carrying them is challenging and dangerous.
Ricky Lee — Google review
A castle nestled in the Japanese Alps that competes with Himeji for its beauty.
Nice to see from the outside which is free , or you can enter the castle itself for 700 yen or less ( pending on group size, kids pay, less etc ).
I went on a snowy day and it was freezing inside, so have extra warm socks and bring your gloves if you want to make the most of it like I did.
There's also a gun museum within the castle itself.
Nathan f — Google review
Such a beautiful castle! I've visited a few different castles during my time in Japan, including bigger ones like Himeji, but I think this one might be my favourite. The area around the castle is lovely, and the castle itself is unique for its black exterior.
When visiting, be sure to give yourself plenty of time as there is quite a bit of waiting around. You first have to queue to enter the castle, and then you queue again to go up the stairs to the higher levels.
Make sure you wear warm socks as you are asked to take your shoes off before entering. Even on a fairly temperate, sunny day my feet were freezing.
The stairs in the castle are incredibly steep and so are not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Ellie H — Google review
It's the main attraction in Matsumoto. The entrance ticket to castle is 700 JPY. The surrounding area is very nice and good to spend some time. We also able to see the night light show during our visit. It started at 6 pm and continues till 9 pm (This is during January)
Chamal Perera — Google review
I LOVE old castles. This is one of the top and most picturesque castles in Japan. But I will see 50 of the if I get the chance to see them in my lifetime. The Castle is in excellent shape and one of the very few that is virtually intact throughout its life.
Himeji Castle being the other that made it through the years. The History of the castle is heard through their intercoms system, there are guided tours as well. The location opens at 9am to 5pm but recommend coming at 9-11am before the crowds.
If you have not been in a Japanese Castle, be prepared for some very steep steps , some very high steps and some slippery steps. Leave what you can in the lockers by the gift shop as the steps are narrow and not made for tall people, the more hands you have available to make the climb and decent, the better.
Richard E — Google review
I may be a bit biased, seeing as this is my favorite castle, but I absolutely loved this visit. 松本城 has been my favorite castle for over a decade now, yet this was my first time visiting.
I highly recommend imagining what it was like to walk the halls some 450+ years ago when it was first built. Guaranteed a must-see if you have the time.
Ryk (RykGoodDesu) — Google review
A unique "black" castle with 6 levels. A walk around the park outside of the castle is a must especially in good weather! Do read the story while you are on the 6th level, about the beautiful deity. That was quite interesting. It is fairly busy with tourists hence the top 2 levels usually require queue to access.
Rtexal Tan — Google review
It's big, it's beautiful, it's famous - what more could you want? Well, I wish they wouldn't make one carry their shoes. I didn't say we should wear them in the castle. I just think it's dangerous carrying them with how steep the rake (angle, pitch) of the staircases are. And some of the steps have some pretty high rises (vertical distance between the steps) as well. I'm 63 and scared to death of falling and getting hurt. If a bug flies into me, I bruise. Shoes should be kept downstairs while visiting inside the castle. Hey, today you learned some staircase terminology, didn't you? You owe me.

The castle is so iconic with wooden interior, equip with the showroom of the ancient gun and other equipment. You can see the city and garden view from the top of the castle.
However, it was so crowded, that I can not spend longer time there. Moreover, the stair in the castle is quite steep, at some point, my leg was shaking. But it was a good experience tho.
The entrance fee is 700 yen for adult. You also can take a look at the souvenir shop near there.
Gemini Woman — Google review
An absolutely stunning castle. If you are looking for a Japanese castle experience, this is where you need to go. You can take a limited express train from Shinjuku. If you are staying in Tokyo, take day to visit this place. The view is stunning, there are swans in the water around the castle, there's a scenic bridge, there's a beautiful garden, and there's lights when it's dark.
The inside viewing is super crammed but still worth it. Bring thick socks in autumn and winter as you will have to take off your shoes. The stairs are extremely steep and narrow so you have to be in an appropriate physical shape. It's basically a long conga line that goes all the way up and then down again, you dont get to go at your own pace. The view from the top is nice, the museum is mostly about historic guns, and the building just feels very historic. I like that is has side buildings in addition to the main tower. Good pictures at sunset from outside the grounds and at sunrise from the garden inside.

Put this on your list if you want to see castles in Japan. You can get a free tour in English . See kiosk near entry . Walk around moat is free but entry fee for castle . Best photos are in afternoon. The red bridge on the north west corner is a good photo spot. Walk directly south on the Main Street to get great local noodles. You can walk it from the train station and easy flat route. In the late Fall you can see the snow capped mountains in the distance.

I absolutely love this castle. The park around it is so good to take a walk, to have a meal, or just appreciate the castle. Beautiful black castle. Pictures simply do not capture how nice it actually looks in real life. It gets crowded very quickly and that makes visiting a bit hard, since the stairs inside are so small. But definitely worth visiting. Pictures outside are much nicer though compared to the inside. Be careful with the stairs as there are many big drops that make my legs sore after climbing.

We went there in the hot summer day. It was super hot.
When we was there, it took us 20-30 mins until we can get into the castle. Inside the castle was a little bit cooler.
The stairs inside the castle were very steep, I would recommend waring something suitable for climbing the stairs.
Inside the castle is a war museum that you can learn not only about the castle but also the war and history of the guns and weapon used in that period.
Worth visiting despite long waiting and so many kids there when we visit since it was Saturday during Summer vacation for Japanese students.

I was greeted by an English speaking tour guide as soon I stepped into the gate and he was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the castle.
Getting into the castle itself was a long wait, followed by many more long waits inside as you move up and the down floors. The stairs are incredibly steep so that’s fun.
Would def recommend going first thing in the morning.
Elizabeth Ganak — Google review
Visited the castle on a weekend end of November , but wait time was still one hour. Consider another hour to hour and a half to get slowly through the castle. Steps are very steep so be careful. But for sure worth the wait since it is one of the most preserved castles in Japan. Entrance fee 700 ¥

Quite a large castle in comparison to the others in Japan, though may not be of same scale in other countries like China or Europe. You can complete the tour within 2 hours. You do need to take off your shoes when entering the castle to preserve its flooring, and you will be greeted by the staffs at every stairs.
This castle definitely still preserved the unique Japanese architecture designs from the 1600s. Along the way of your self-tour to the top level, you get to see the various weapons and explanation boards (in Japanese and English) to learn more of the history.
I would think a Japanese Castle is a must for first-time tourist to Japan.

The castle and grounds are beautiful... from the outside. Definitely come during the day and especially the evening when the castle is lit.
The tower tour was really awful. You are moved through in a line that goes too fast to read about the weapons, but so slowly as a non-breaking line tries to move up and down the narrow stairs. Really no need to go through the tower, there isn't much up there and it takes an hour to get through start to finish. I'm not sure why people recommend this.

The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is a must-visit landmark in the city, alongside the famous Matsumoto Castle. This museum is dedicated to artists associated with Nagano Prefecture and offers an immersive experience into the world of Yayoi Kusama, a renowned contemporary artist born in Matsumoto. Even before entering the museum, visitors are greeted by the impressive outdoor sculpture "The Visionary Flowers," which leaves a lasting impression.
Awesome collection! I didn’t see the special exhibit, so it was super cheap to get in. 410¥ for adults and the Yayoi Kusama collection is included in that! I loved all of the art postcards I got at the gift store too. Great place to spend a rainy day (or a sunny one)

I also quite enjoyed the Tamura Kazuo exhibit which the museum changes frequently to reflect the season! The museum costs 410 yen for adults so it is a very reasonable price for the amazing exhibits that it houses! There are also several exhibits that don’t require a ticket to view so you can enjoy parts of the museum at no cost if you don’t want to see the Kusama or Kazuo exhibits!

If you like contemporary art then you must visit this museum which features two of the greater and renown artists born in Matsumoto.
We’re lucky to have visited an exhibits by filmmaker and visual effect director Takashi Yamasaki (exhibitions already ended). A great filmmaker of some of the multiple award winning film adaptions of anime, manga and etc.
The permanent exhibition on the life of Yayoi Kusama was impressive, her art works are all colourful, vibrant and modern.
Unfortunately only the yellow polka dots pumpkin and massive riotously colourful outdoor floral sculpture can be filmed.
Other than above, there’re many other smaller halls that exhibit calligraphy, photos and paintings.
We really enjoyed our visit in end Oct 2023

Dropped by yayoi kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art.
The castle town of Matsumoto is the birthplace of Yayoi Kusama, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist famous for her use of polka dots.
A pity we couldn't take photos within the exhibition. Rather thought provoking for me, to reflect and think about life and purpose, as the theme for her exhibit is titled 'Yayoi Kusama: The Place for My Soul'. While it's nothing morbid, but the colours and dots used to represent molecules, cells, dna, souls etc can evoke such deeper thoughts 😂

I love it! Their permanent exhibition is from Yaoyi Kusama, Japanese artist that you probably recognize the work everywhere, entitled “The Place for My Soul”. It’s only 410JPY, so fairly cheap. Fyi she was born in this city.
The museum is quite big, and it only take around 1 hour to see everything. There is one experience where they keep you in a room with various lamp, they shut the door and you spend 20 seconds there.
Almost all of the exhibits couldn’t be photographed. But it is better than anywhere else I have seen.

Be warned: the road to the campsite is narrow and if you arrive after 12, you will have to often pull over for cars to pass. Try to leave early!

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time in 30 years and was surprised to see that the roads were paved.
I failed because I brought a larger tent with me. We recommend bringing a small type. I think you can enjoy it even more if you bring your own bicycle.
It may not be suitable for those who are used to high-standard campsites.
The problem of cell phone reception is often talked about, but if you are visiting with children or loved ones, you never know what will happen, so try to avoid drinking as much as possible, and in case of an emergency, you can go to the bottom of the mountain on your own without relying on satellite phones. It might be a good idea to keep it drivable until then.
However, there is a satellite phone installed in case of a disaster, so you can rest assured!

The scenery along the way was spectacular, and the campsite was in a great location, so we had a relaxing time.
The constant sound of the flowing river is soothing and soothing.
I think it's the best campsite I've ever visited.
Despite being in a location that could be called an unexplored area, there is also a kitchen and toilets, although they are of a pump type.
There is also a drinking water called Bi-kao-sui, which is perfect.
Unfortunately, there were pegs that could no longer be removed all over the site.
This is not a campground management problem, but a moral problem among us campers.
Thank you very much to the people of Okuwa Village who manage it.

Nojiri, Okuwa, Kiso District, Nagano 399-5504, Japan
Narai-juku is a charming and well-preserved Edo-era hamlet nestled in the mountainous Kiso Valley along the Nakasendo Trail. The wooden temples, museums, souvenir shops, and historical architecture offer visitors a unique glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. From traditional Japanese crafts to hidden views and shrines, this quaint post town has something for everyone to appreciate.
Wonderful town~ I went here shortly after the new year and was pleased to find it devoid of the usual horde of tourists. Finding peace, serenity and calm in this tiny town ~priceless experience~

Lovely and very well preserved old town. Even more beautiful as it was snowing when we were there. it was a quiet Monday morning when we arrived. Even the parking was free (we parked next to the steam train)

Although it was a short trip due to a tight schedule, a visit to Narai of a Thousand Houses was truly fascinating and unforgettable. Highly recommended to stay for a night here of possible.
Kyujin Kim — Google review
Merchants and samurais used to pass through Narai, and similar other post towns when they are travelling back and fro from Kyoto to Tokyo (Edo). This is a scenic town at the foot of a hill (at the end of Narai town, where one can take a shower hike up to see the entire rows of houses flanking a single road. The shrine in the middle of the town is an interesting visit too with a large tree.
In Summer, it is best to visit in the morning or afternoon (after 2pm) as the sun direction will create shade on either side of the path so it's a more pleasant walk.
Parking is convenient at the roadside station and the town is connected by a scenic rail that cuts through the valley to Narai village.

Pretty little town on the famous Kiso Road. Following in the footsteps of Samurai (!), we walked the main street and visited the museum.
There are plenty of souvenir shops, all if which were reasonable. We had a long chat with one of the store owners (in English) - she was genuinely friendly and welcoming.
Worth the trip

This quaint and well-preserved post town of Narai-juku is located in the mountainous Kiso Valley. All the building have been restored and it feels like you’ve stepped back in time to the Edo period. Most of the shops sell traditional Japanese crafts ranging from lacquerware bowls, plates, cups, trays, and soba cups along with various souvenirs.

It was sort of , yes , an older city feel but arriving it wasn't quite what I thought it was and still there is some modern touches to the OLD CITY area that eh , idk mixed feelings there. Couldn't get a good shot either at times cause there are cars driving up and down too. I really didn't like it there so much. Sorry I am a purist when it comes to original and old things even down to seeing the Incan ruins , ancient Rome , Greece, and the pyramids.... so any touch of modern kills it for me.

Lovely well preserved Edo period town in the middle of the mountains. Well worth the day trip if you get the chance. We visited on a weekday in April and there were very few tourists around, it was almost as if we had the whole place to ourselves. The town folk are very lovely and there are loads of giftshops where you can buy locally crafted souvenirs.
if you’re visiting Japan and have a Rail Pass you can make the trip via the Shinano train + Chuō line with no extra charge.

Naraijuku is a well conserved traditional Japanese town in Nagano's Kiso Valley region. It was developed in 17th to 19th century for travellers as a mid point stopover between Kyoto and Tokyo. Beautiful rustic ambience. Good place for a slow lazy day to chill.

The train ride from Matsumoto to Narai takes less than an hour.
We arrived today at Narai-juku at around 14.30 and continued walking for about 15 minutes. Indeed, most of the buildings are old but still well maintained.
Some of the tree leaves have started to turn yellow, some are turning red, they are very beautiful. According to information, there will be more and better visits in mid Nov - mid Dec.
Some shops are still open but almost all restaurants are closed at that time.

Finally did a day trip to Naraijuku because most of the lodging places are booked so I booked Matsumoto for return lodging but leave from Nagano station to Shiojiri then about an hour bus ride ( 100yen) to Naraijuku station . Walking at Naraijuku preserved houses, restaurants , shops and cafe was like travel to a Time Machine and took me back to the Japanese Edo period . It was fantastic for some like me who is crazy about photography . I spend few hours visiting most of the shops and chi chat with shop owners , the story I got from the old ladies and man are really precious. I only ends the trip at the shrine so I will be back to continue my part II .

What a charming place! It's my favorite among the postal towns. I visited in mid-August during their Shrine's annual festival, and surprisingly, it wasn't as crowded as I expected. It felt like a journey back in time, and I absolutely enjoyed the local atmosphere. I strongly recommend checking out the Former Nakamura Family Residence to get a peek inside their traditional homes.

A fun glimpse into historic shops and homes from the Edo period. Touring through one of the family homes was definitely worth the small admission fee (300JPY). I love that all the shops are small businesses, it was cool to chat with owners and ask them questions. It wasn’t all mass-made kitschy objects, there were lots of handmade souvenirs to browse.
Everything closes by ~4pm in the fall 2023 and it gets quite cold, just be aware of that when planning your trip. The train runs only every 60-90 minutes. Not too crowded either, there were definitely a number of tourists but not at all overwhelming, it was easy to find time to explore each shop and chat with the small business owners.

Perhaps it was a Monday..., the place was rather quiet (& I'm not complaining) and most shops were shut.
Beautiful little old town with old persevered houses. We were here in autumn so there were red n orange leaves to dry the background. I'm wondering during summer, what could be the enchanting factor.
There are no admission charges.

Narai-Juku, nestled within the picturesque Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, stands as a time-honored gem embodying the essence of the Edo period’s post town culture. As one of the most well-preserved and charming examples of its kind, Narai-Juku beckons travelers to step back in time and immerse themselves in the rich history and traditions of old Japan.
Established along the Nakasendo, one of the five major highways connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period, Narai-Juku flourished as a vital rest stop and trading hub for weary travelers and merchants journeying between the imperial capital and the seat of the shogunate. Its strategic location amidst lush mountains and pristine rivers made it a pivotal point along the route, offering respite, refreshment, and commerce to those traversing the rugged terrain.
Today, Narai-Juku stands as a beautifully preserved testament to its storied past, with its well-preserved traditional buildings, cobblestone streets, and tranquil atmosphere transporting visitors to a bygone era. Strolling through its charming thoroughfare, lined with quaint wooden inns, merchant houses, and historic landmarks, one can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time.
Whether exploring its cultural heritage at the local museum, sampling regional delicacies at traditional eateries, or simply soaking in the serene ambiance of this historic enclave, Narai-Juku offers a captivating journey into Japan’s rich historical tapestry, inviting travelers to experience the timeless beauty of its post town charm.

This post town has a wild west feeling. All the buildings are oriented slightly angled to the street making it feel as if you are getting squeezed into a funnel. All shops were shut during a recent winter hike through there. Very photogenic

I always have a soft spot for quaint Japanese post town like Takayama and Narai-juku. No regret taking a 2-hr drive here one way from Kawaguchiko. Very little foreign tourists and the vibe is simply charming. There are souvenir shops, cafes and local restaurants. They may looked like they are closed but they are open for business. It’s a 1km+ long street lined with shops on both sides. Be prepared to spend at least 2-3hrs especially if taking a break for snack, coffee or meal.
Located across the JR Chuo Main Line from Narai-juku, the Road Station Narai Kiso-no-ohashi is a popular toll road rest stop. The station offers various shops including Western and Japanese restaurants as well as sweet shops, providing a well-balanced selection of food options. One of the highlights at this location is the Kiso Bridge, although it may be inaccessible during certain times due to weather conditions such as freezing temperatures.

No, this is definitely a parking lot at a tourist spot.
First of all, when you enter the roadside station by following the signs, you will only find a facility with a toilet and a parking lot for about 10 regular cars. It becomes.
The second parking lot is the main space, but at the intersection there was a small signboard with a picture of a roadside station. Large vehicles are also limited to buses, and they can only be used during the day.
The road information facility, which seemed like a no-brainer, had a laminate saying that tickets were sold at the roadside station next door, but of course it was unmanned. I couldn't find any shops, so I wondered what it was like as a roadside station.

Anrakuji is an old Buddhist temple located in a forested area and characterized by an octagonal pagoda and a two-story bell tower. Its entrance is marked by a black gate, surrounded by lush greenery that makes the stroll towards the temple very pleasant. This national treasure can be visited for free, but admission to climb up to the tower costs 300 yen.
The one and only Octagonal shape pagoda can be found here, and it's the Anrakuji treasure . National treasure with the highlight as a three-story octagonal wooden tower. Intricate and original carvings of the tower were amazing to look at.
The tower blended very well with the lush green and the blue skies of early summer typical of Nagano. I suppose this place must also look splendid in the fall with yellow and red leaves as the backdrop.

The Ueda Castle Ninomaru ruin, which dates back to 1583, has been reconstructed atop a hill. The site includes two Shinto shrines and a museum that showcases the area's local history. Despite being relatively small in size, the place is quite pleasant. Although I did not have the opportunity to explore the castle itself, I was impressed by the abundance of flowers in the surrounding park and a delightful traditional event taking place nearby.
Huge park with museums, a shrine, and much more. You can spend so much time appreciating the history and beauty here. The whole month of April is a cherry blossom festival and it becomes very lively with street food stalls and people.
Nicholas Murphy — Google review
Really lovely castle with a very rich history of one of the coolest samurai clan in all of Japan, the Sanada clan, famous for their samurai uniform with antlers and red color (you've probably seen in movies). Ueda castle also had legendary defense battles against many sieges, the subject of a popular Japanese tv show "sanadamaru". The castle is also featured in other works such as "Summer Wars". While the castle gates aren't as big as Matsumoto castle, I think they are definitely worth visiting if you are in the area..they have amazing armor on display and a rich cultural center and museum nearby.

The place overall is nice, even though rather small. We did not check out the castle but the park around it was full of flowers and there was a nice traditional event taking place

Well the old castle is basically destroyed, but the river around the castle, the Earth and the historic atomosphere is still there, telling people the stories in old days

Came here 4/10/2022 and the sakura were all in full bloom. Depending on the year, the time of the bloom will change so check before you go. There were many food stalls selling your standard Japanese snack foods. I walked around the moat about 3 times just to admire the beautiful sakura trees on both sides.
TIP: In the middle of the moat is this small park that everyone just tends to overlook so it's not that crowded. Bring or buy food from the food stalls and eat it here. If you have a tarp, you can spread it out on the grass. There are also benches you can sit on as well. I climbed up the stairs and got a seat under a gazebo, right in front of a GORGEOUS pink sakura tree.
Highly recommend this place during cherry blossom season. I personally wouldn't plan a trip here off-season though since there's not much of a castle to see (but I'm just not a castle person in the first place...)

Senjōjiki Cirque is a stunning glacial landform adorned with vivid wildflowers. It can be accessed via cable car and is popular among mountaineers. However, private car usage is prohibited as only official buses are allowed on the narrow roads leading to the site. Despite this inconvenience, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the ropeway in August's pleasant weather. The journey to the lake can either take you through a shrine or directly from behind the building in just one minute.
To get here, you can catch a bus from Komagane Station to the Komagatake Ropeway station. From there, you can then board the ropeway gondola that'll take you to the top of the mountain. It's a bit on the expensive side, but it's absolutely worth it. Keep in mind, you can't drive to the ropeway station on your own; only buses are allowed. We visited in August, and despite the dreary weather, the scenery was absolutely stunning. There's a simple trail around the pond that takes about 50 minutes, but we really wished we had more time to hike further up to Mt. Komagatake, which can easily take up half a day. So, plan ahead if that’s on your agenda. At the summit station, there’s also a hotel with a restaurant and a souvenir shop.
Maria — Google review
A bit chilly up there, so bring some warmer or extra outer. You can enjoy the highlights of the mountain without climbing efforts, thanks to the ropeway.

Senjōjiki Cirque is a beautiful alpine cirque located in the Kiso Mountains in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its dramatic scenery, including towering cliffs, waterfalls, and alpine meadows. The cirque is also a popular destination for hiking, camping, and skiing.
I recently visited Senjōjiki Cirque on a weekend, and I was very impressed. The cirque is truly a sight to behold. The cliffs are massive and the waterfalls are cascading. The alpine meadows are lush and green.
However, I must warn that the cirque can be very crowded on weekends, especially during the summer months. If you are planning to visit on a weekend, I recommend arriving early in the morning to beat the crowds.
Overall, I had a great experience at Senjōjiki Cirque. It is a beautiful and unique place that is definitely worth a visit.

A little known part of the Central Alps of Nagano but well worth the visit in late May and June before the crowds that apparently throng in the summer months. Fabulous panoramic views on the day we went.

An experience that won't ever be forgotten for rest of the life. Due to trani suspension, the journey to Komagane was extremely difficult but the hike next morning made everything better. Highly recommended for a hike lover!

First and foremost, don't drive a car like us. We failed to see the board as only official buses are allowed to use the road to reach here. We got some weird look by the bus drivers as the roads are narrow. Luckily the people were kind enough to let us buy the gondola ticket.
Keeping that aside, really beautiful spot. Ropeway has some stunning views. We came in August and the weather was nice and cool here. You can take a longer route to the lake via the shrine or go to the back of building and reach the lake in 1 min.

Lake Suwa, situated in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, is a serene body of water with a circumference of 16.2 kilometers and an elevation of 759 meters. During winter, the frozen lake becomes a unique spectacle as anglers and skaters create holes on the ice to fish. The phenomenon known as "Goshen" occurs when the ice cracks and rises over a meter due to shrinkage and expansion.
A warming hot spring town in Nakano. We stayed in front of the lake and enjoyed the impressive dining and excellent fire work. We should stay longer and walk alone the lake. That should be a wonderful thing.

I'll never travel to Hokuto without this trip planner again
The Suwa Taisha Upper Main Shrine (Kamisha Honmiya) is a vast complex comprising wooden Shinto shrines, worship halls, and sculptures located in the serene forest of mountain foothills. The site is well-maintained by staff dressed in traditional attire who perform blessings such as safe travels for visitors. The shrine stamps are available here, adding to the experience. The sumo shrines are also worth visiting.
Visited this famous shrine in Nagano every new year these years. Love the atmosphere and you can eat and shop along the way to the shrine. Parking area is too busy during new year holiday but lucky enough to fine some vacancy a bit far from the spot.
Cecilia Chen — Google review
We enjoyed this shrine very much, tranquilly located on the edge of a forest and seemingly in harmony with the grand, towering trees that surround it. It is hard to appreciate Shinto shrines if you are not Japanese, or don't have a cultural and aesthetic understanding of their meaning, architecture and significance. But this one is just naturally attractive even if, like us, you have little understanding of what you are looking at. So much beautiful wood in the construction, and a pleasing absence of the signage that seems ubiquitous at many such places and that so badly mars the aesthetics.
Easy to get to by car, with free parking available nearby. Not sure how to go about getting here by public transport.
Howard Banwell — Google review
This was a huge complex. I liked how everyone was dressed in traditional clothes and taking care of the site. It was cool to see a blessing being performed for safe travels for a truck driver and his companion. I was able to get the shrine stamps here. Everything was so well kept. I liked the sumo shrines that where as well which was cool. After visiting here I ate some nice jelly like noodles at a nearby shop which was perfect for the very hot day.

Sophie Solioz — Google review
I visited in late January. One one hand it appears run-down—some structures were off-limits due to renovation, but on the other, it just feels really ancient. I did a little bit of research on this place prior to visiting (as we should, to appreciate the place more), and I knew this shrine is very culturally significant and one of the main ones in the country. It’s considered a power spot by many, but the only power I felt was the cold fingers of winter tucking themselves down behind my neck. It was cold. This shrine is one of the Suwa shrines that house the sacred logs that some brave, brave people ride down a mountainside during a festival that’s held every 6 years or so. I forget the name. I’m writing this on my phone half-dizzy after a strenuous hike.

Suwa Grand Shrine (Japanese: 諏訪大社 Hepburn: Suwa taisha), historically also known as Suwa Shrine (諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja) or Suwa Daimyōjin (諏訪大明神), is a Shinto shrine in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is considered to be one of the oldest shrines in existence, being implied by the Nihon Shoki to already stand in the late 7th century. It certainly carries a pride of place and there are thousand year old trees around the shrine. Set in a peaceful tranquil forest. A Shinto ceremony was held as we passed by for a large Japanese company and its staff.

Komoro Castle Ruins "KAIKOEN" is a historical landmark that dates back to the Edo-era. It has been reconstructed numerous times and currently houses a museum, amusement park, and zoo. The site offers stunning views of the surrounding area and provides visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture. Entrance fees are 300 yen or 500 yen for access to the museums as well.
Beautiful spot to watch cherry blossom bloom. As the name suggested, this is a castle ruin, so there is not much left of the original castle except for the stone base. Lively shops and a live student band playing in the park when we visited.

Lovely place, famous for its cherry blossoms. We visited during the summer, and there were only a few people around. Much of the grounds have been transformed into a park, with only a few remaining gates and walls. From the observatory, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Chikuma River and the surrounding valley. Definitely worth a visit.

Decent place with pretty autumn colours. However, out of autumn there isn’t all too much. The Sakura, snow, and green leaves would be pretty too but isn’t much to speak of when against the rest of Japan.

(visits 1) (total castles visited as of posting, over 35). The 3 stars is for the castle park as a whole. The castle grounds and park are huge and nice. But the entrance fee includes (and obviously goes to support) a tiny zoo which is part of the park. I hate these tiny zoos. The cages are old, WAY too small, and dirty. If I had the choice I would never support these zoos.

It seems to be a famous power spot.I went in May, but it's cold in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, so wear warm clothes.
There are quite a lot of people in the power spot called Kiba. It's like a surreal skit with many people mysteriously sitting on tree benches.
It's my second time, but I don't feel anything at all
But there are times when people get sick.Even if it takes time, believe in yourself and recover or accept it and live a reasonably happy life
There is no parking lot, so you will have to use the parking lot at the shuttle bus stop.
With flush toilet
I came when there was no shuttle bus yet.
At that time, I was giving a little back to people who held out their hands
When I was sleeping comfortably at the edge of the upper shuttle bus stop, someone came to me with my hand! I shouted mysteriously, so I left immediately, but when I came this time, there were stones piled up there, so is it a serious power spot? Does it seem like someone in the know understands?

From the previous day, we rented a car from Nagoya City and drove directly to Komagane City.We were told that we would not be able to go to Bunkui Pass, so we arrived at the parking lot 10 minutes early as the morning shuttle bus was scheduled to run from 8am. There were only 3 groups including myself.
We arrived at Bunkui Pass in about 10 minutes from the parking lot.
It takes less than 5 minutes to get from the parking lot to the Kiba.
Due to time constraints, I was only able to spend about 30 minutes, but I could feel my fingertips tingling.
I was told that the Ura-Kiba area from the parking lot to the drinking fountain was more treacherous, but I decided not to go there this time as bears were likely to appear.

A person I met in Kobe during the off-season told me that the water sales floor below this place made my hands go numb. Is it the influence of the magnetic field on my second selfie? It was a feeling. It was a picture of feeling trapped in a soap bubble of light. The area around the face is white and blurry, and it's a little scary. I took a series of shots, but they were all different. Aren't magnetic fields something that changes at a dizzying pace?
By the way, the water here is too expensive 😅 Because of the typhoon's landslide, there was no place to collect water, and there was no sign of repairs. I've been driving there a lot lately, but I've only been there once late at night. There were no cars or people around, so I thought I'd take a nap in a nearby vacant lot, but I was surprised to hear a woman's voice clearly chatting. Things like "What is that person doing?" and "I wonder what it is." I still don't know if there were really people around at midnight. Maybe Akiba Kodo? Was there anyone there? Well, I went to a nearby roadside station thinking it was really dangerous, but I'll be more careful in the future. This area is beautiful during the fall foliage season, so I thought I'd take some pictures of where I often take a break. I'll also add the view from the top.

Nestled in the natural beauty of Yamanashi, the Yatsugatake Resort Outlet Mall offers a unique shopping experience with a backdrop of outdoor adventures. The mall features a variety of stores, including popular brands like Avirex, which often offer generous sales. While some shops have closed down, there are still three recommended outdoor stores to explore: Hardware, Colombia, and an Italian brand. The setting amidst the forest is picturesque and provides ample parking.
Avirex is one of our favorite brand. The sales lady was very kind and it was a lucky day yesterday because of the huge sale not only on Avirex but on most of the stores.
We went here during weekdays so it was a slack day and there were only few shoppers but I like it that way, we had a lot of time to choose without minding the cost and the limited items.

This place used to be really enjoyable shopping mall, but now it’s dying out. Most tenants have left and there are a lot of vacant place. It doesn’t deserve to be visited at all, now. On top of that, free parking became toll parking. It was another disappointing point.

Compact in size and major brand shops are missing but it’s like shopping in the middle of a forest and it feels good. The whole place closes at 7pm and dinner has to be pretty early if you want to eat there. Coupon discount with highway toll is available, and will save you almost the one way toll for shopping coupon!

4000 Kobuchisawacho, Hokuto, Yamanashi 408-0044, Japan
Kobuchizawa, a former town in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, was merged into the city of Hokuto in 2006. This picturesque area is surrounded by boardinghouses, hotels, and ryokan inns. Visitors can enjoy activities such as horseback riding and skiing while also exploring art galleries and parks. With its charming accommodations and diverse attractions, Kobuchizawa offers a delightful retreat for travelers seeking relaxation and outdoor adventures.
If you're a whiskey enthusiast visiting Yamanashi, the Suntory Hakushu Distillery is a must-visit destination. Here, you can delve into the rich history and craftsmanship behind Hakushu Single Malt Whiskey while immersing yourself in its cultural significance. Expert staff will guide you through the distillery, allowing you to experience the sights, smells, and sounds of whiskey production.
Did a remote tour of the distillery and it was great! The attached photos are the remote tour “kit” that they deliver shortly before the Zoom tour. The tour is entirely in Japanese, so some language ability is required. Very informative and very good! Looking forward to visit in person.

A nice whiskey distillery tour. The tour of manufacturing process is good, probably there is somewhere better but this tour is good enough if I’m really honest. If you don’t speak Japanese, you will have a headset with different languages recordings.
What makes this tour different is the fact that they spends quite a lot of time in the tasting sessions. It explains the whiskey flavour profile in a lots more details compared to all of my previous tours in different distilleries/ château. Also the tasting session was done in a nicely decorated room which make the whole experience better! And one of the highlights is the paid whiskey tasting in the bar! You can try those rare/ old whiskey in a reasonable price such 30 years Hibiki at ¥5000. On top, you can purchase 1 bottle of Hakushu at retail which is a must buy! Definitely worth visiting!

Being a huge whisky fan, it is an honour to be able to visit the distillery. Do book in advance to get a tour (where a guide will share about the distillery in Japanese, they have a phone which English translation is provided). If you can't get a tour, you can book to visit the distillery on your own.
The best part is to try out their whisky and unfortunately only 3 types are served per pax. I wish I could drink more as I love their whisky a lot.
This distillery is simply amazing whereby we got to see the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation processes.

Good experience go on the tour of the Distillery. It is in Japanese but foreigners are given a hand held device in their selected language. The bar has many Suntory brand whisky to offer and at amazing prices, many not found even in bars in Tokyo. The water they offer at the bar is directly from the mountain and it was delicious, best tasting water ever!
Only disappointment is there is no whisky to be bought at their shop. Many other souvenirs though. Have to go early as the bar and shop close at 4:30pm. We were rushed.

I gotta say, this distillery is one of the Best distilleries I’ve visited in Japan! Its set in a serene and beautiful forest and the dram it produces is one of most sought after in the world!
I highly recommend the ¥1000 whisky tour as they take you on a beautiful journey around the distillery plus the free tasting and highball making class at the end is well worth it.
Downside is it’s a bit of a trek to get here, as the free shuttle is not as frequent as you’d expect!
Tip: cost efficient way to get to get here is to buy a 5 day Flexi JR East pass. this pass will cover you for travel for all Tokyo JR lines, won’t cover you travelling west to Osaka or Kyoto.
Fastest way to get here is a train from Shinjuku to Kobuchizawa and take the free shuttle. If you miss the shuttle the taxi is the best bet price estimate - ¥1500-¥2000.
PS: there’s no aged whisky or any hakushu at this distillery. They only have the Chita for ¥3500 or so.

I was fortunate enough to snag a tasting and factory tour spot while I was in Japan. Pretty easy to get to. Learning about their history and their process of making whisky was inspiring. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. We went in a storage building and the first thing that hits you is the smell of the aging whisky. It’s not a smell for everyone, but it smelt good to me. In the end we got to make our own highballs. The best part was their bar. You can select 3 glasses at a time from their bar selection. I’ve picked some really good ones and then treated myself for another round. I would most likely go back.

Totally worth the trip out here. The tour was very well presented and educational.
