Shirakawa-go is a historical village tucked away in a remote mountainous area that boasts traditional Gassho-style farmhouses. As one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, it is a must-visit for any tourist. The tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of the village makes it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It was nice. Seeing the traditional homes in that region up close was spectacular. There are plenty of shops to visit and buy reasonable priced trinkets. We stopped by the restaurant nearest to the entrance parking lot and had lunch. It was lovely.

Beautiful village!!!
It would be best if you can find a place and stay for a night near the village. You can visit it early in the morning next day. No crowded tourist before 8:30am.
There are few restaurant near by but only 1 open after 7:30pm. So be prepare and have your dinner before that.

A really scenic and peaceful place. Lots to see and do. There are many tourists that come here, however the place is so big, it's no big deal. As part of our tour, we also had a delicious meal. If you are in the region, definitely add this place to your list.

Nice, calm, beautiful area. Can have a lot of people walking around, but the vibe is rather pleasant and everyone seems to respect these lovely surroundings. We have a room with a back window looking right out over a wonderful stream. If you do your research and set the right expectations, I think you will love including a visit here within your regional travel plans.

I was amazed at this well presented Heritage town! The houses still accommodate the locals & stay over tourists. That was us!😊
The locals are early morning risers due to the thousands of tourists that converge during the day. I observed the locals dog walking, gardening & general outdoor cleaning in the early morning hours.
If you stay overnight, you really must arise early, you will have the village streets to yourself! We had a fabulous experience!

While this place is the most beautiful in wintertime, covered with snow, it is still very nice place to visit anytime of the year.
I visited Shiragawa-Go during Autumn and didn't disappoint. This place/village is very attractive. You can see why it is UNESCO world heritage site. People preserved old architecture, and village very well so you can feel like you warp to the past.

Came here on late spring.
One of the Unesco World Heritage. A must visit.
A historical village that secluded beyond the mountain. It was a calm, serene, peaceful.
You need to go up to the hill to see and enjoy the whole village area from above. It was too beautiful.
The river and the water ditch sorround is super clear and clean as crystal

This is a traditional japanese village. It takes about 3-4 hours to cover the entire village. We visited here during early autumn. There is a bus to the observatory point. Cost is 200 JPY. But there is also a foot path to climb there. We used the bus to go uphill and used the footpath to come down. River side is very beautiful. Try to visit the museums if you are interested to see the historical things.
Chamal Perera — Google review
Well worth the bus ride (or rental car drive) to see these amazing houses built hundreds of years ago in a picturesque location. Spend at least 2-3 hours here to walk around and view the village, and grab a bite to eat or a souvenir. Visited on May 22, 2023.

You will need to buy a bus ticket in advance if you come with public transport. Also to go back. And keep in mind that everything closes at 4pm so it would be best to eat lunch around 12-1pm.

Nice little tourist area, deserted at night so make sure you get dinner early! We had a lovely quiet time there in the morning before the crowds started to com at around 9am when the museums open

Amazing place, it transports you to another time period almost. The people there were so welcoming to us, we had something to look at every step of the way around the village. Make sure to respect and follow the rules of the place (no trespassing, no littering, etc.)

Amazing place, big snow and magical scenario. Christmas time must go place. If you go with car, must need snow chain. All restaurants open and not over crowded. Way better to enjoy then any other season.

A little town with all the good feels.
The houses are lovely. Everything is walkable. Homes are fascinating too.
Homes have no signal nail and are known for their roof structure that look like praying hands.
I particularly loved the cafe where you see the Shirakawago scenery whilst drinking coffee.
There was also a lunch menu for 2000 Yen with hida beef set super yummy.
Everything is great and amazing in this lovely town.

Love the small village feel and the unique high pitched thatched roofed houses and the river nearby. Has a couple of houses that you can pay (400Y) to go inside and experience the past (Myozinji house built since 1748). Need at least 6 hours here for visit. Kids will love the trouts living in the gutters along the streets.

We made a three hour stop here on our way to Kanazawa by bus. It's a bit of a tourist spot and good for a one hour stop only. It has lots of toilets around the town and two small cafes if you want a coffee. We found one restaurant which was open. A very nice town with a lot of original houses and you can also go up to the observatory. When we went there was a very large number of tourists.
Keith Saunders — Google review
We were lucky to see some snow when we visited this unique village in the north of Gifu.
Very unique house design and there were shops and restaurants around the village.
It's such a famous tourist attraction spot that at the time when I visited, there were more tourists than locals living in this area.
I would definitely recommend coming here when it's snowing a lot more than the pictures here.
Nicholas Tan — Google review
We have visited this place before and I have also reviewed this place previously and so I will keep this one "short and sweet".
This time round, we allocated more time here as previously we only stopped by here for about an hour (after our visit to Takayama Old Town) but didn't have much time to roam the place.
We arrived slightly before 3pm. Weather was cold (but it was much colder later on when the sun set) but the river had not fully frozen like in our previous trip. It was quite comfortable to walk under the sun and yet very cold condition.
More shops were opened as it was weekday (our previous visit was on a Sunday and many shops were closed then). So we could walk around and shop for local foods and souvenirs.
We loved the scenery, lots of greenery and beautiful cottage houses, and our mother nature was just right around us!
Surely it was a wonderful revisiting trip on this UNESCO World Heritage site! Definitely worth it!
Ed Chung — Google review
A very quiet place for tourists to appreciate the old Japanese culture and architecture. The place is close to a number of local restaurants. We drove there on a weekday in March. Need to go through a lot of tunnels to reach there. Better equip with sun glasses because its tiring to drive among mountains with remaining snow. Both parking and restaurants are not too full. Kids can still hv snowball fights and build up snowman though we no longer could see snow on roof any more. Houses are close to each other and we could do some walking while not being too exhausted. Suggest to stay there for 2.5 hours including lunch. Love the place, being something different to visit in Japan.

A magical experience in this winter wonderland! It was snowing on Christmas Day! We had so much fun building a snowman. Many beautiful farm houses are covered in snow for great photos. Lots of souvenirs shops and little restaurants and dessert shops. The road leading up the observatory deck has turned icy, so need to walk slowly and carefully. The view from the observatory deck was breathtaking. It was an incline going up. Need to take breaks along the way. Don't forget to take pictures!
Jen Chan — Google review
Very nice old town of thatched roof houses. All made with wood and ropes, no nails used in the construction.
It was snowing which added to the magic.
We were there relatively early with our car but there were already lots of people around. It's nice and you spend an hour going around and up to the observatory point. Don't take the bus, use the short walkway by the side, much better views of the village.
Seb Camborieux — Google review
gorgeous ghasso town, we got so lucky with the snow (early march) - go to だんご屋 ゆたか on your way to the observation deck and try the sweet sake! so many places to eat in town and lots of cute souvenirs! make sure you buy a bus ticket back to where you’re going in advance (we got stranded for a few hours but we were lucky to get seats on the last bus)
Brit Thew — Google review
Visit in the winter peak so temperature was -5. Beautiful and fairytale-like village, make sure you have your time after 3pm or before 10am as all same day tourists would arrive from 10am and leave by 3pm. Observation deck has beautiful view but extremely crowded most of the time.
Truc Nguyen — Google review
Ranks high in my favorite places visited so far. Went for a day trip (winter season) and instantly fell in love. Regretted not staying longer and will definitely visit again.
I am in awe at how the locals protect this heritage site. The town looks mystical from afar. If you’re into heritage tourism then this is a place you shouldn’t miss.
There are food stalls and souvenir shops available.

We arrived there with the first bus from Kanazawa.

Dam on the toll road (motorcycle 500 yen)
It's a recommended touring spot as it's cheap on a motorcycle 😃
Even in summer, it's cool because of the high altitude! Above all, it's cool
You can drive your car over the dam!
You can enjoy the scenery on both sides as it is like an embankment road 😃
The dam road has 1.5 lanes.
Since it is not that wide, there are traffic lights on both sides of the dam🚦

There is an observation deck at the top, but there is no parking space around the dam embankment.

For an incredible and breathtaking experience, don't miss the chance to ride the Shinhotaka Ropeway. Situated among the majestic Northern Alps, this exceptional cable car system transports you over a thousand meters up the side of Mount Hotaka, Japan's third-highest mountain. From this vantage point, you can marvel at magnificent vistas of the surrounding mountains or choose to continue your journey on foot towards one of Hotaka's lofty summits.
A must visit if you are going to the Japan Alps. Absolutely stunning in the summer, on a clear day we could see all the mountains. Very scenic. Be sure to bring some postcards (or buy them and stamps from the gift shop) and mail them to friends and family from the most whimsical post box on the observation deck. From the second station you can wander into the woods on a walking trail, and it’s a lovely walk.

Here we use rope-way to roof observation deck. When we arrived, snow was still falling. It is very cold. On the roof observation deck also has restaurant by using vending machine. There also snow corridor, if the weather is fine, you will enjoy however for my is very cold, we can only stay for a moment and hurry to go inside because it is super cold.

Great views on a sunny day, after you climb the 2nd ropeway. You can have your picture taken and have it framed. Shops (souvenirs, food and beverages) on both ropeways. You can also climb by foot (probably difficult in snow conditions). At ropeway 1 you can relax in a foot onsen. A not to miss experience when in or around Takayama.

Kamikōchi Azumi, Matsumoto, Nagano 390-1516, Japan
Nestled amidst mountain peaks and lush forests, Myōjin First Pond is a serene and picturesque gourd-shaped lake located within the grounds of Hotaka Shrine's inner shrine in Kamikochi. Also known as Mirror Pond or Pond of the Gods, it is steeped in Shinto mythology and offers a reflective surface with pure waters. Legend has it that this area played a significant role in Japanese mythology.
Beautiful lake especially in a clear day, make sure you walk around as far as you can.

Such a pretty place. Worth the five bucks to get in. Cold in late Oct and early Nov though so dress appropriately.
Trish Kok — Google review
The pond is located about 3.6km from Kappa bridge heading north east, there is no public transportation but it's a very mild hike, thus making it less crowded.
The pond and nature around are spectacular, picturesque and well worth the hike.
There is an entrance fee of 300yen to the pond and small shrine.
Located next to the entrance there's a small restaurant and public toilets.

Honestly one of my favourite places to have stopped at in Japan. At the time I came there were a few people here, but it was mostly empty, was absolutely beautiful to just spend some time here relaxing. Low low entry fee which is worth paying.

This is the better of of the 2 ponds. Less people hike this way because for those that can’t walk far the buses will drop you off at the Taisho pond. It seems this pond is owned by a temple but it’s worth the price. It’s really beautiful here. We came after the last bus left and there were no tourists here except for the few that were staying here overnight. If you have to choose between the two ponds, pick this one.

To see the pond you have to pay an entrance fee of ¥300 and it is definitely worth it.
The pond is very calm and smooth, it is like a mirror reflecting the sky and the mountains.
The path surrounding the pond is mostly on planks and on the ground, it can get quite muddy. If you want to go to the end of the path to see a little waterfall, the path becomes a bit more adventurous as you have to step over rocks and roots.
It is a very peaceful place and probably one of the highlight of Kamikochi.

Very scenic, especially in autumn. The shrine gate at the lake, along with the 2 anchored boats, adds to the beauty. People line up at the gate to get their pictures clicked. A little towards the left side is the second pond.
The Hida Daishonyudo Cave is a large limestone cave with multiple areas, breathtaking rock formations and a museum. It's located at a high altitude, making it one of the highest limestone caves in Japan. The cave is also unique because of its history: it was sunken in the sea long ago and has remained largely unchanged since then. Visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of the cave while exploring its many areas, including large dunes and undeveloped parts.
Very interesting cave, there are some stores and restaurants close to the parking lot, a museum with really cool items, the cave itself is surprisingly very claustrophobic it feels like exploring a real natural cave, very cold inside about 10 degrees and strong winds, overall a fun experience probably the best cave i have been in Japan ✅ 8/10

We managed to drive here in a 2wd Toyota Yaris with studless snow tires when it was snowing hard.

Really love here! Astounding! Maybe is a weekday and early morning. I took the bus from the Nohi bus center. ( using the 2 day pass to ropeway, is included) I was their first customer. And there is a free shuttle bus. It is at the opposite side of where you alight. The shuttle bus will bring you to the cave.
The bus driver will also ask you on the pick up time to drop you back to the bus station.
The cave was peaceful and quiet and you can really enjoy and immerse yourself in there. Is calming.
When thought is the end of the cave, there are more things awaiting for you as you exit.
Please support the natural preservation. Nature don’t last…😊
JooZoo WG — Google review
The cave itself wasn't very special in my opinion. A lot of bright purple LED lights, which makes it possible to see far into the cage, but also disturbs the natural darkness and 'mystery' of a cave. The view after you've exited the cage is great though, definitely worth the trouble of biking/walking up the hill.
Nathalie Veltmaat — Google review
Excellent. We bought a two day bus pass and used it to visit the Shinhotaka ropeway and these caves. There is a shuttle bus for the caves from the bus stop and you simply tell the driver when you'd like to return to the bus stop for your return journey, this was a fantastic free service. An hour and a half was plenty for the caves. Add more time if you want to have a bite to eat and a coffee whilst exploring the nearby shops.

This is a classic tourist trap. Entrance cost is 1100 for adults and 550 for kids. Not too bad though. Caves were fine, kids enjoyed them. We walked the whole thing in about 40 minutes. Had to dodge several museums, gift shops, and restaurants. Stop here if your kids are in to this or you need to burn some time.

there were 3 caves inside and you can choose to exit after any of the caves. there are q alot of steps inside so not recommended for kids and elderly. the cave was not impressive but the view at the end was amazing during winter!

Fascinating limestone cave system set in an idyllic area. There are food and souvenir shops around. Conveniently there was also a free shuttle bus to the Center from the bus stop at the bottom of the mountain. You can purchase a return bus and entry ticket from the Takayama Bus Station, which saves you about 200 yen overall. Total I spent was 2570 yen. I think it’s a good price for a short day trip. I only spent about 1.5hrs here as there was no English explanation/signage for anything, but if you can read Japanese and are hungry you could definitely stay for 3. They don’t advertise it but there is a beautiful exhibition of artefacts before you go into the cave, and honestly, this exhibition was more interesting than some museums I’ve been to. And the fact entry is included is amazing. I think they should definitely advertise this as it may increase people coming. I went at midday on an Autumn Saturday and almost always had my section of cave to myself. This is not suitable for non-able bodied people, and people of larger builds as it can get quite tight in some sections of cave. Overall if you want something to do on a cloudy/rainy day, why not check it out?

Not crowed at weekend. There is a large parking space. You can buy ticket on arrival. It’s nice but not impressive as I expected.

This was on route, so I decided to visit. I forgot to bring a jacket inside so I had it really cold. Since it was 13c inside the cave. It was really fun. However, it was a bit too crowded for me. The whole path in the cave was basically a giant line of people.

A very impressive limestone cave, even if it feels a bit "staged"
It is quite large, and even has a small shinto shrine inside.
You climb a bit as you make your way deeper inside, and then when you get out - you get to see a view of the area from up high

If you are driving by, it is worth a stop. Just prepare yourself for a recorded Japanese woman’s voice blaring at some points in the otherwise peaceful caves. It is a lot of walking and stairs, so not ideal for the elderly. The lighting could use improvement.

Nestled amidst lush woods and towering mountains, Taisho Ike Pond is a serene lake area offering various outdoor activities such as hiking and boating. The pond's tranquil waters beautifully mirror the surrounding peaks, while the "Standing dead trees" create a captivating landscape that changes with the seasons. Formed in the early 20th century by an eruption of Mount Yai, this picturesque pond is renowned for its reflection of Mt. Yakedake and golden larch trees.
Very beautiful place to see the stunning views of Japan alps. The water in this pond is so clear that you can see the bottom of the pond. In a good weather day, you can see the mountains reflected on the pond. If you want to visit this place and want to make a short walking to Kappa bridge (3 km), getting off the bus at Taisho-ike bus stop.

On holidays driving in Japan, Takayama to Matsumoto 4th April 2024 stopped at Nakanoyu shop (closed) to see if road is open to Taisho Ike pond. Security guard at tunnel said road is closed to cars, but you can walk. We walked 3.1km approx. 1.5 hours thru a 1.6km tunnel & then 590m long tunnel uphill. Tunnels had a walking path and well lit. Great walk and beautiful scenery. Toilet at pond was open but snow around building and hotel there was closed, no vending machines. Pond was nice but the mountain scenery was amazing. Kappa bridge 3km from pond with thick snow on road and weather closing in so we didn't go. Less than a hour walk back. We were lucky with weather.
No proper legal parking at tunnel entry.

25 buildings in a compound, with 9 designated as monuments. For a price of 600 yen, it's definitely cheaper than visiting a single house in the village for 400 yen. However, walking thru the village with villagers living next door is more rewarding and offers a better experience

I advise you to drop off the bus on this stop, and then walk along the river until Miyojin pond (6km) and then come back to kappa Bridge where you take the bus to come back. Total 9km, 3h going slow and stopping to take pictures.

Get on from Matsumoto bus terminal at 5.30 and get off at Taisho Pond.
Because it was still morning the temperature was 3 degrees Celsius.
The view is really cool, entering autumn the leaves are starting to turn yellow. The water also looks clear and clean.

Taisho Ike Pond is a beautiful alpine pond located in the Kamikochi Valley in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its crystal clear water, its stunning mountain scenery, and its peaceful atmosphere.
I recently visited Taisho Ike Pond, and I was absolutely blown away. The pond is even more beautiful than I imagined. The water is crystal clear, and you can see the bottom of the pond even in the deepest areas. The surrounding mountains are stunning, and the reflection of the mountains in the water is simply breathtaking.
I also loved the peaceful atmosphere. There is a sense of tranquility and serenity at the pond that is hard to find anywhere else. I spent hours sitting by the pond and enjoying the scenery.
Overall, I had an amazing experience. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I highly recommend a visit if you are looking for a peaceful and unforgettable experience.
Here are some of the things I loved about Taisho Ike Pond:
- The crystal clear water
- The stunning mountain scenery
- The peaceful atmosphere
- The variety of activities to enjoy, such as hiking, boating, and fishing

The walk there was 4 stars. Because of recent flooding some of the paths were blocked off. Because of that you miss some of the best parts of the pond. If you have all day it’s worth the hike. If you don’t go to the other pond.

When going over from matsumoto bus terminal, highly recommend to drop at taisho ike pond first instead of going to kamikochi bus terminal. Wait for the sunrise and be amazed! Then hike over to kappa bridge.

One of the best experience ever.. many snowboards and jackets and trousers to rent.. but goggles and gloves we'll have to buy.. so get some cheap goggles and gloves before coming here as it can be a bit expensive... The easy course has flat as well as steep areas so it's really easy for a beginner. I chose snowboarding as it was my first time . And I learnt it in the first try itself . Toe slide and heel slide are easy to practice on the easy course.. enjoy.. ☺

High elevation slopes with gondola makes for comfortable riding and higher chance of powder, or at least sub zero temps. Only three real runs but I find two of them to be decent, though some people complain about the lack of options. I go for snow quality, and since the mountain erupted (2014) the ski passes have been cheaper and also shorter lines (take that how you will), so I find it to be a worthwhile place to go.

I heard from a friend that there is a strange ski resort where the high season starts in March and is easy to ski for beginners and intermediates, and I go there every April, so since it is far from Osaka, I decided to use Lodge Ciao, which opened this season.
It was good. Other ski resorts were still open, so it wasn't very crowded, so we skied a lot.
Features
-The season is long due to the high altitude.
The temperature will probably be below -10℃ in January.
It is crowded from March to May when the low-altitude ski resorts are closed. The well-maintained piste is the best in the morning.
・There are few people. I'm sure it's over 100km downhill from the nearest IC. It is a solitary island. If it snows, everyone will scatter to the ski resort in front of you.
・The course has a simple layout and is easy for beginners and intermediates to ski. On the other hand, I think it is unsatisfactory for advanced users such as those who like bumps.
・Good outlook. If the timing is right, you can see a sea of clouds. From the top, it becomes Umitake Mae Norikura. Base 1800, top 2200.
・If it snows a lot, I'm worried about whether I'll be able to get there even if I head there. I'll try it next season. I might lose my roots along the way.
・It's far from Osaka. It won't go all the way to Nagano, but on the other hand, it's probably this distance.
・Lodge Ciao, don't expect dinner. I think it would be better to bring a cassette stove, pot and ingredients and have dinner in your room. It's fine if you're looking for 0 minutes on the slopes, but if you want to enjoy après-ski in an open-air bath and enjoy dinner, I recommend looking elsewhere. If I stay overnight next time, I'll probably stay overnight without meals.
・This is basically a ski resort that is rotated by gondolas. It's good in cold weather, but it might take a while. On the other hand, it's a great way to take a break, and it's great for people who get sore feet from lifting. However, the fastest speed is 5 meters per second, but I don't think it actually reaches that much.
My goal for next season is to ski at Chao Mitake in the deep snow of January.
I will do my best.

(Translated by Google) As of December 2019, this website has not been updated since last season. It's probably going to turn into a ``reminiscence ski slope'' as it is, but I'll leave it as a record (though I don't want it to turn into that).
The highest elevation at the top of the slopes in Japan is ``Shiga Kogen Yokoteyama'' at 2,305m, followed by ``Ontake 2240'' at 2,240m, and Chao is in third place at 2,190m. Following are the ski resorts in the Ontake and Norikura areas, including Nomai Pass (2130m) and Kaida Kogen Maia (2120m). By the way, Happo-one is only 1831m.
The quality of the snow is due to the fact that it is located on the north-facing slope directly below Mt. Mitake Tsukodake, and the lowest elevation of the slope is 1,810m, which means that the entire slope is located above the top of Happo-one. Of course, it also holds snow well. We also visited the only place in the Ontake area that still had snow during Golden Week.
On the other hand, with this elevation difference, there's no way you can get a great course layout, so it's a mediocre ski resort, and the approach to get there is quite long, so it's going to be quite difficult to attract customers. (^_^;)
nevertheless. It will be cold, but there will definitely be powder in the high season. The ski resort environment and majestic scenery are on par with Hokkaido's snow quality (or so I think), and the white birch forest around the ski resort (Hiwada Plateau) is also beautiful. I want it to be revived somehow.

Access is honestly bad.
If you are on the way from Nakatsugawa IC or Takayama IC and there is snow, it would be a good idea to take about 2 hours to see it.
High season is extremely cold.
Minus 10 is normal. If you're wearing it overnight, it's normal for the outside temperature to be -19, so driving safely is a must!
The courses can be roughly divided into two and Cobrane.
It seems like there are a lot of skiers.
It's not that there aren't many snowboarders, but it seems like there are a lot of snowboarders.
The slope is not too steep and it feels like you can descend from the top all at once.
The first piste in the morning, the first track gets me excited!
If you are traveling with children, measures against the cold are a must!
Studless dresses are absolutely essential from the start of the season until the end of the season! ! !

Mt. Ontake is a towering volcanic mountain that lies on the border of Gifu and Nagano prefectures. It boasts of crater lakes and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, making it a stunning natural wonder. The mountain is visible from afar, appearing brilliantly white for most parts of the year. However, since October 2014, it has been emitting plumes of steam due to volcanic eruptions that resulted in the tragic loss of 63 lives.
A beautiful mountain on the border of Gifu & Nagano prefectures, Mt Ontake is awesome!
Seen from afar Ontake-san is brilliant white for most of the year, and since October 2014, a plume of steam has been visible when the volcano erupted killing 63 people.
It is still on volcanic alert level 2 (lowered from level 1 in August 2017), so it is still closed for hiking. Lower areas are still accessible but the peak and surrounds are off limits.

We've been here in late september 2017. The vegetaton in the higher altitudes were already turning into red.
We parked our car in the parking lot of the cable car. Then we took to it to the base point of the climb. Th climb is not that easy and you need to be in a relatively good shape. Alternatively, you can just climb it very slowly :-). As for safety, the trail is safe with no obvious obstacles.
After 1-1.5 hours of climb you'll reach a resting point. From here the view starts to be amazig. From the resting point to the mountain top is about 1 hour or less. Just before the mountain top (which was closed and you could only see it from the first pond) there is a hut.
The first pond was not that beutiful. Looked like a muddy construction site. Unfortunatley for us, we started the climb around noon so we did not have sufficient time to see the other ponds.
Make sure to start the climb around 8AM so you'll sufficient time for the entire journey, as the cable car closes around 4PM.
The scenery is amazig once you leave the forest. Absolutley recommended.

I pray for the souls of the people who died by the eruption.
Mountain climbing is prohibited as of January 2019.
Since there is no forest from the hilly side, the view while climbing is good,
but summer it is hot in the sunlight.
My recommendation is the snowfall period.
In the morning, you can climb the large slope of tight snow freely.
It is an independent peak and there are no forests,
so there is no place to avoid avoiding blowing in the wind.
I want to climb the sunny and calm day.
If you climb up from Ropeway Top station you can go and back in one day.
More preferably, if you wear skiing, or if you climb taking it,
When descending the mountain you can skiing freely on a wonderful large slope.
It is a very long course of about 3 km to the top of the station and more than 4 km in total to the foot station.
It is unthinkable to walk down this course during the snowfall period.
Skiing climbing is the best.

Sacred mountain. Little bit scary because it is active volcano, But hicking was really great experience. Different. Just being there above 8th station, that feeling I will remember all my life. On 2014. there was eruption where 35 people died, we climbed on 3rd anniversary without knowing that.
Must be there around 8AM if want to hike in the mountain, to see the lakes. Can't get to the top,it is closed, but can go till 2nd lake, just little bit under.
Fir climb it is open trail from the ropeway only. Other trails are closed. Ropeway is working from 8-16:30 so must take care about timing.
There are not so many people what is good, because it is really the place where should clean the mind. Quiet, calm, wind, smoke from vulcano, many shrines, statues, offerings on the way.
Will go again.
View is great, it is around 3000m -9000ft, breathtaking. Lakes are really beautiful. 2nd lake had shrunk little bit,it was in september. End of september, it was really fresh in the morning and evening. It was just a start of autumn colors. I went there one more time around 10th october and it was beautiful autumn time. There are few huts there on the trail, 8th and 9th station huts were working, could order tea,buy water, snacks. But should prepare everything before because of timing. Down at the ropeway can buy everything.
In the ropeway building, next to the ticket place there is paper where you should write name, mobile phone,route- if you do that you will get free coffee( it is good one, drink on a way up while climbing on a rope way)
Dont forget waterfall! It is really amazing.

This roadside station has a very large parking lot, and you can park a lot. There were a few large trucks, but there was space to park them in the back. There seem to be few houses around here, so I think it's relatively easy to sleep in your car.

I went there on foot from Agematsu Station. It took me about 45 minutes to get to Risenji, where I paid 200 yen for the admission. Climbing up the rocks at the art park was a bit challenging. The rock formations here are beautiful, and are allowed to be entered on foot, if you like a challenge. The place is completely free, and connects on the east side to a temple, and on the south end to a artsy type of park.
Parking is free, near the shops. Farther to the south there's a very large parking lot that connects to the aforementioned park. This place is not wheelchair accessible in any way, shape, or form. I would recommend visitors to have a reasonable level of physical condition, especially if they intend to get onto the rocks.

These beautiful terraced rice fields start from a height of over 600 metres and go down into the valley below. Quite pretty at any time of year but probably best to see during the harvest when the rice plants have ripened to a bright yellow.

Tsumago, located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a historic village along the Nakasendo trail. This trail, once a major highway connecting Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo period, offers a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural past.
Tsumago is renowned for its well-preserved traditional buildings, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking an authentic experience. Strolling through its narrow streets lined with traditional wooden houses, visitors can feel transported back in time. The village maintains strict regulations to preserve its historical ambiance, ensuring a truly immersive experience.

Bring cash as some of the shops don't have contactless payment. You can withdraw cash from the post office.

What to do here:
- Admire the nature
- See the old houses with eye-pleasing architecture style
- Try soba noodle, eat dango and goten mochi (fried rice ball)
- Try local Shinano beef!
- Take a lots of picture!
But remember to get here in the morning! It's get dark quick after 4PM and most shop close at 5PM. Also try to stay here for a night in traditional ryokan, much cheaper than ryokan in big cities but still have impeccable service, room, onsen bath & food!

(Translated by Google) Although it is famous for its starry sky, I came to Heavens Sonohara because I wanted to see the sea of clouds, which can only be seen at this time of year.
I had read on the internet that it would be open from 5 o'clock, so I arrived just after 5 o'clock, but there were quite a few cars parked there.
After checking in, I was able to ride the gondola at 5:15. I went there and found out that it takes 15 minutes to get to the top of the mountain by gondola, and 10 minutes by lift after walking 300 meters up the slope, so if you calculate the time of daylight, you need to be careful because if you don't get there early, you won't be able to make it in time. .
The weather forecast said that the lowest temperature in Achi Village was 8℃, so I went there wearing winter gear (Heattech, parka, and down jacket), but it was extremely cold, so I recommend bringing more layers. It's cold at the top of the mountain, but the lifts along the way are also exposed to the wind. People who seem to be repeat customers seem to be careful about preparing things like blankets, throw blankets, and hot drinks.
I was shivering in the cold as I waited for the sun to come, but the clouds hanging over the mountains really looked like the ocean, and the way the sky slowly turned orange through the gaps in the clouds was so magical and beautiful that I couldn't resist taking a photo. I tried it, but it's no match for the naked eye.

In the first place, there is a night tour in partnership with an inn in Hirugami Onsen, and it says that you can also solve mysteries, but you can only stay at night from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm (including the time when you are riding the gondola). In total, you probably don't have enough time to solve the puzzles in total darkness (I think this puzzle-solving kit is for solving puzzles in the afternoon or evening). The Iwamura Castle Ruins are located on a secluded mountain and consist of stone walls and a turret from a 12th-century castle. It is considered one of the top three mountain castles in Japan, but only known among select individuals. Visitors should be aware that it requires a steep 2km hike up and down the mountain to reach the ruins. English translations are available for explanations, as well as QR codes for CG photos of what the castle would look like.
The foundation stones of the castle are still as strong and stable as the day the were laid hundreds of years ago.
The location, high on a hill, gives a commanding view of the local area although the surrounding forest has grown tall and obstructed the view from when the castle was occupied.

Great little spot with lovely ruins
Hidden up at the top of the hill the ruins are easily accessible with a carpark up the top, or enjoy the walk up from the bottom car park.
Chausuyama is a mountain peak that boasts an active volcano, offering various walking trails and trekking routes suitable for all levels of hikers. In addition to these, there is also a ropeway available for visitors to enjoy the stunning view. However, during the Shibazakura Festival, visitors should be aware that a parking fee will be charged.
The highest mountain east of Nagoya, located at the border of Aichi and Nagano prefectures. Even though it is not so high and there is an only very small ski resort, the specialized constructed driving way to the top is very much breathtaking with so much very Japanese great nature in the mountains.
Located at the edge of northeastern Aichi and southwestern Nagano, very close to the border with Shizuoka prefecture also.
Driving car or with tourist group from Nagoya, recommended tourism course is, through the Sanage Green Road which is very new and comfortable ETC highway, and after the very end directly run national route 153 which is very much natural Japanese countryside route with lots of nature alongside, through southern Nagano till Chuo expressway at Sonohara or Iida Yamamoto.
Recommended visiting or driving route is from Nagoya, see and experience some tourism spots like Toyota automobile museum or IKEA Nagakute east of Nagoya, see the beautiful tiny rounded river Kanpachikyo which is very close from the end of the Sanage Green Road.
Around Asuke area can see red and brown or sometimes even gold coloured very much special maple trees at Korankei in autumn, can try to taste local traditional snacks like Goheimochi or grilled solty or Japanese miso flavored river fishes or can find any kind of very traditional souvenirs at Korankei, then you can find lots of onsen around Inabu and southern Nagano, onsen means very traditional Japanese hotsprings which every foreigner can experience only in Japan. There are some nice affordable hotels as well. Very Japanese countryside natures.
By the way here is the border of both Aichi and Nagano and the address of this place should be Nagano prefecture I guess.

Although the mountain trail is well-maintained, there are places where the steps are difficult to climb even for adults, and there are places where soil has washed out.

Horaiji is a Buddhist temple located on a hilltop within a larger complex. It's renowned for its autumnal foliage and picturesque views. The journey to the temple offers breathtaking scenery, making it well worth visiting. The temple itself is modest yet well cared for. A map of the trail leading to the temple has been included in the photos section to assist those wishing to make a trip there.

(Translated by Google) We climbed about 1,300 stone steps in the pouring rain. It was actually planned to be cloudy when we climbed the mountain, but it can't be helped since it's a mountain.
I parked at the first gate. Is it because it's low season? It was free.
We climbed the stone steps for about 40 minutes. After about 800 steps, the stairs became steeper. There was a bench along the way, so I took a break and climbed up.
I went with regular shoes, but I slipped on a stone on the way back💦I slipped about 3 times. It's dangerous.
When we arrived at the main hall, there was a rest area where we could enjoy the view, and we were able to relax while looking at the view. The chairs were huge and I felt like I could relax quite a bit.
If you come from the parkway, you can probably see Toshogu Shrine first.
The Okunoin temple was said to take another 40 minutes from the main hall, and since I had somewhere else to go, I stayed there.
The scenery was very nice.

Atera-no-Nanataki Falls is a picturesque location that can be accessed through a forested walking trail. The waterfall features seven tiers and is believed to possess sacred powers. Visitors can wade in the stream or relax at seating areas, making it an ideal spot for picnics. There is a fee for parking, with rates of 300 yen for cars and 100 yen for motorcycles. The tranquil atmosphere and scenic drive around the mountains are perfect for enjoying the autumn season.

A neat multi-level waterfall in Shinshiro City, Aichi. As its name suggests, there are seven falls and measure 26 meters in height. Access is rather difficult. Driving would be your best option. A part of the road is often blocked during the rainy season due to landslide, so you have to find another way to get around it.
¥300 for parking. There is an old restroom located next to the parking lot and also a vending machine. Approximately a 15-min walk from the parking area to the waterfall. Not a huge area.

The Gamagori City Takeshima Aquarium is a compact yet captivating attraction showcasing an array of sea creatures. Visitors can witness exciting live shows featuring sea lions, as well as observe giant crabs, groupers and vibrant clownfish. The aquarium also offers the opportunity to feed turtles and fish. Although smaller in size, it provides great value for money with available parking options including free spaces.
A great aquarium! It may be small but it has so much character. Lots of interesting exhibits with capybara, sea lions, turtles and much more! Feed the fish and turtles, watch live shows with the sea lions and capybara and see a lot of sea life. The value for money is great with parking available, some spaces are free. Very accessible and great for everyone. Kids love it and so do adults. Covid has meant that the live shows are not available 😓 However, I strongly recommend a visit. Lots of other things to do nearby including a cafe and restaurants for food and refreshments.

A nice aquarium. The aquarium was very nice overall, though it was packed with people inside. Weirdly enough though, I couldn’t spot a single tourist. It is more popular with locals. The aquarium is really cool, I got to touch animals you wouldn’t normally touch, like a spider crab and small sharks! You can feed some animals too. I am a little worried about the seal. When not performing, it is kept in a very small pool with little space to move around in. :( Please be aware of the animals well-being. Tickets are cheap though.

Fun and educational aquarium. Good cost performance considering that admission is only ¥500 / person. There are a few interactive areas where visitors can touch / feed some of the sea creatures. Displays available in Japanese only; but they are very fun and educational to read if you speak the language. Nice aquarium for young children.
- Very small aquarium
- Sea lion shows on weekdays
- Expect to spend about an hour at the aquarium
- 15-min walk away from the Gamagori Station

very cute fishes overall, but when we got to this tank i was a bit concerned by the way they are taking care of the axolotls. my boyfriend owns a couple as pets and he was also concerned. The lights in the tank are too bright for them and the water quality must not be good. they look under large amounts of stress because of the lights and their gills look decayed. :( i hope this aquarium finds a better way to house these animals so that they can be happy.

But i tell you, never miss Le NoiReve!!! It was short but it was pure magic! I felt like I was on another realm. It was the highlight of my visit. I loved it!

Pretty small scale amusement park. ¥2,150 park entrance fee. The individual ride costs too much, so if you plan on riding anything you would want to just purchase the passport. Since the park is so small and the rides are very short, you don’t really need an entire day to go through the whole park. The after 4 pm discount ticket for ¥3,350 with unlimited rides is more than sufficient. The flower park and illumination shows at night are nice. If you only want to enjoy the night scenery the entrance fee ticket alone may be sufficient.
Free shuttle from the Gamagoori station to the park is convenient for those who are not driving. This place is quite empty on weekdays and non public holidays. I went on a weekday with 0-min wait time for every single ride.
Overall, good amusement park for the locals (family with kids or couples); if you are a foreign visitor with limited amount of time, definitely visit places like USJ or Tokyo Disneyland instead.

Daihonden is a Buddhist temple that was established in 1441, boasting verdant grounds and a fascinating hill called Reiko-zuka adorned with divine fox sculptures. Although it can be overwhelmingly congested during the New Year festivities when throngs of people converge to pray for blessings from the fox god, this shrine offers an enjoyable and uplifting experience. However, it's generally more peaceful at other times during the year.
Beautiful shrine a must see if your in Toyokawa.

I wasn’t expecting it to be a temple! It’s a temple but it’s also for Inari, who is a Shinto god, and usually Inari has shrines. I prefer shrines to temples, but it was nice to go to another Inari site that is closer to me than Kyoto. I’d been trying to get there for over a year before I finally went. I’m glad I did, but I probably won’t go back. It’s a huge temple complex though, lots to see, and there’s a shrine with lots of fox statues around it.

Okay so Toyohashi is a little town. So you rarely find a nice place to hang out or even take friends when they come to visit. But the city has one nice park to boast of. That is Nonhoi zoo. This place is lovely. I have been here twice and both times I really enjoyed myself. Most people think Zoos are for kids but this place is definitely for anyone who loves animals and wants to have a good time. They not only have land animals but Sea animals in a big aquarium. They have a dinosaur themed park that’s almost like a small dino museum. Also they have the most beautiful flower park. I recommend visiting this in spring or fall. And they have a theme park with rollercoasters and other rides( not so big but fun) .
There is also a go kart racing track for all you car lovers.

I was there on May 4, 2023.
It's a vast area that combines a zoo, botanical garden, museum, and amusement park. I explored the zoo and museum during my visit. The zoo is large and spacious, but it lacks an adequate number of wild animals, especially tigers. There were no tigers to be seen, and the size of the lions was only slightly larger than that of a big dog, which was disappointing. However, I highly recommend visiting the zoo to witness the main attractions, such as penguins and seals. I thoroughly enjoyed their show. Although I had hoped to see a polar bear, it was not present. I might have overlooked the snake enclosure as I didn't come across any spaces dedicated to them.
There is a large parking area available inside the premises for 400 yen, but I'm unsure about the duration of its usage. You are allowed to bring your own food and drinks to the area. I recommend bringing them along, as it is a considerably spacious place.

Firstly, the fact that admission is free is a significant advantage, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors regardless of their budget. The airbase holds historical significance, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's aviation heritage, which adds depth and meaning to the experience. Additionally, the provision of free parking enhances convenience for visitors, ensuring a hassle-free arrival and departure process.
One of the standout features of the Hamamatsu Airbase is the opportunity for visitors to go inside the cockpit of aircraft, take pictures, and even change clothes, providing an immersive and memorable experience. The inclusion of cockpit demonstrations further enriches the visit, allowing visitors to gain insight into the operation of these impressive machines. Moreover, the airbase offers a commanding view of the runway, providing visitors with an exciting vantage point to observe aircraft in action.
However, there are a couple of drawbacks worth noting. Firstly, all the information provided at the airbase is in Japanese, which may pose a challenge for non-Japanese speakers to fully comprehend the historical context and details of the exhibits. Additionally, the size of the airbase is relatively small, which could limit the amount of time visitors spend exploring the site.
Overall, despite these minor drawbacks, the Hamamatsu Airbase offers a superb experience, combining historical significance, interactive elements, and scenic views to create an engaging and enjoyable visit for all. Its free admission, coupled with unique features like cockpit access and demonstrations, make it a must-visit destination for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

You don't need a ticket, this museum is government owned and is free. The museum has games and a realistic plane flying game where you sit in a plane chair and drive a plane on a tv. Everything is free in this museum. Lots of information and a playground at the back of the museum.

A place for family and kids!!
It's a three floor museum, has food corner, kids playing area, few movie screening and a bunch of plane models to see !!
Loved the live demonstration of the armed vehicles at the rear of the museum.
"Make sure you take bus 57 to avoid walking around 3kms"
A souvenir shop for fun, overpriced to be honest..!!

We went there on a Saturday, the entrance was free. Free parking on the premises and if you like airplanes, or military stuff, you’ll love the place!

Located next to active military training airport you are likely to see a lot of aircraft training if you visit at a good time. The museum itself is free and offers an overview of the Japanese Self Defence Air Force, how it operates, aircrafts used and so on. The second part is a hangar with planes, helicopters and experience zone.
Thr downside is that there is no direct bus line from the station so you need to walk a bit to get there. Second downside is that all the materials are only in Japanese, but I think that doesn't matter for the most part.
I would highly recommend this for military or plane enthusiasts. Families with children at the age where they enjoy airplanes will find the experience zone super fun as they can for example go into a cockpit simulator of a fighter plane.

No easy way there by train, but worth the effort. Super friendly staff and you can even sit in some of the displayed planes cockpits.

Me and my family enjoy it it’s all free from entrance to parking to using pilot dress so amazing experience come it’s all free no charges and the staff ladies so kind and friendly

Good aircraft displays, but ongoing COVID measures limit access to the cockpits. If you want to try the simulators, reserve early.

Good place if you like fighter planes. Retired pilots tell you about the planes. We wanted to try the Jet fighter Simulator, but the Equipment is old and was out of order that day. If you bring your dogs you’ll have to park outside of the premises.

It's free entrance and amazing! 💯
The museum has such a huge wide range of display where you can enjoy and take a look around. Sadly, some of the activities are closed because of Covid but still it's a nice experience. 👌❤️
If you like engines and airplanes, you'll surely like this place. 😊

Awesome plane displays and flight simulator. On the second floor we could see real fighter jets taking off from the runway.

(Translated by Google) I visited in January 2022 for a round-the-Japan challenge with a light car and a vandwelling of 1 million yen.
There were multiple parking lots and toilets along the coast in a beautiful facility!
There are many vegetables and fruits in the roadside station, which is cheaper than ordinary supermarkets! attractive.
It seems that you can do BBQ in a location where you can see the sea, so it's the best!
It was quite crowded, so I think it's a popular roadside station in the local area.
I post the scenery of my trip on Youtube every day. It is a travel channel that delivers superb views all over Japan. Search by one-time life!

funny old place really, I often stop on the way from hamamatsu to irago whilst biking/cycling. There is a souvenir shop, a plant shop, an ice cream shop or something thats never open, usually a food van, a random road bike exhbit made by some car company and a surf shop. You can shelter under the building if its raining or go up onto the second floor but there's not much of a view. There's a nice enough cycle route leading on from this area that follows the coastline. I wish they'd turn this place into a normal supermarket and add a cafe outside or something, but at least its not a pachinko parlour.

And the road station that I thought for the first time in a while.
It may be a coincidence, but vegetables and fruits are cheap.
Especially melon or cheap.
Figs are also very cheap.
Melon juice 300 yen, which can only be ordered by customers who bought melons, is delicious and sweet.
Located in a location where you can see the sea, there is also a stylish surf shop inside the roadside station.
There was also a stylish cafe with a view of the sea, which was quite nice.
I want to go here again.

Perched on a hilltop, Hamamatsu Castle is a restored fort and history museum surrounded by a picturesque park with seasonal blooms and stunning city vistas. Once home to the young warlord Ieyasu Tokugawa, the castle now houses a permanent exhibition of samurai artifacts, including swords, armor, maps, and family crests. Visitors can ascend to the third floor for a 360-degree viewing deck offering panoramic views of the city and even glimpses of Mt.
A cool place to see the Hamamatsu city from a higher ground. You can also see the tip of Mt. Fuji when the weather permits.
We enjoyed reading the history and appreciated the works of arts, and the architecture. There is a 200 yen entrance fee to get inside the castle which is turned into a museum. The displayed items show the relics of the Japanese people and its government several decades ago.

Because the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and there was some kind of festival there, it was packed. There were a lot of people because the scenery was amazing! We enjoyed looking at the cherry blossoms! But waiting to park your car will definitely take 1-2 hours so be prepared to wait.

Short 30mins walk from the city centre or Hamamatsu Station. Offers great views of the city. Has a few good cafes nearby and a beautiful Starbucks in the vicinity. While small in size, the grounds can be covered fairly quickly. Admission is around 200yen. Gift shop is small, and elderly gentleman at cashier does not speak English and isn't very friendly. Staff at admission is alot friendlier. Steps to the castle are somewhat gravel and mud, so watch your steps. One visit is enough.

Interesting history of the formation and rebuilding of the castle as a defence for the clan and its leader Leyasu Tokugawa. I enjoyed reading about the archaeological relicts and the reconstruction of the castle in the 1950s after WW2. Also use Google translate to understand about the geology of the granite base of the castle its quite interesting. Entrance fee was only ¥200.
Very nice size and proportion more akin to a large house nowadays so not sure where he kept his 2 wives, 16 concubines and 20+ kids at? It must be outside the castle lol.

Rebuilt in 1958, Hamamatsu Castle is a replica hirayama-style Japanese castle positioned at the southeast tip of the Mikatagahara plateau. It was originally built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose rule established the Edo period from 1603 to 1867.
- ¥200 admission.
- Nice to stop by if in the area.

The Hamamatsu City Museum of Musical Instruments is a must-visit for music enthusiasts, boasting an impressive collection of over 1,300 instruments from various countries. As Japan's sole public musical instrument museum, it offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich diversity of global musical heritage. The first floor showcases instruments from Japan and Asia, while subsequent levels feature collections from Africa, South America, Europe, and beyond. Visitors can also enjoy hands-on exhibits and even participate in performances at this immersive destination.
Never would’ve imagined that a museum of musical instruments would be the highlight of a mini-vacation, but there you go. If you have any interest in music, this place is worth a couple of hours of your time. The range of exhibits is seriously impressive.
Justin Norrie — Google review
This museum should be amazing and it has a fantastic collection. However the displays are oddly arranged, crowded and unpleasant to look at (for the Japanese aesthetic) -- they also result, therefore, in dreadful photos. It's a shame because this could be done so much better.
Mandy H — Google review
An amazing collection of instruments from around the world. Allow at least 2 hours to look around and to also play on the selection of keyboards (and a drum kit) that are provided for this purpose. Many items are labelled only in Japanese so if you don't speak the language you can use Google lens on your smartphone to identify and understand what each exhibit is. There is a small gift shop on your right as you exit the exhibition space.
Justin Kinnear — Google review
At first, this museum seemed small; I wasn't super impressed when I first walked in. Next thing I knew, we had been there for 3 hours! There is a really impressive collection of old and obscure instruments, and the interactive room was fun even for adults. This is a must-visit for anyone who has played a musical instrument.
