At a cost of 420 yen for adults, you may gain entry into this 400 year old hilltop castle. Being in the castle, I got a sense or just how old the structure was, even though it's been restored, it was done in such a way as to minimize any major alterations to the original design. This castle is quite modest in comparison to the other majorly popular castles around Japan and it's major attraction stems from the fact that it remains the castle with the longest surviving castle keep in Japan and a history that needs to be well preserved for future generations.

Beautifully restored castle, panoramic views across the city. Great example of the architecture, magnificent huge timbers used. Also plenty of English signage throughout explaining the history, renovation etc. Steep internal steps with risers over 12in/30cm and narrow treads.....not suitable for all! The surrounding parkland is vast and very pretty. A quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A majestic and stunning place to visit in Kochi. We went on March 22, 2024, at about 10:45am. The weather was perfect. There are many steps to get to the castle and many inside. Before entering, you must remove your shoes and place them in a plastic bag. We carried the bag with us during our trek to the top. Some spots are a little awkward to take photos and hold the bag, but we managed fine. It was crowded as there were two cruise ships in Port on the day we visited. I did not feel cramped or rushed. Everyone was polite, and the line moved along at a pace that was relaxing. The stairs to the interior's top floor are very steep. I can not stress this enough. They are steep. Go slow and hold the rails as they are steep, somewhat narrow, and traffic goes in both directions. We had a lovely time and would recommend if you are in Kochi.

Kochi Castle, a 20 min walk from JR Kochi Station, 5 min climb from Hirome Ichiba Market is a nice walk. It’s also one of my favorite castles to go over inside. ¥420 ($4.00) for adults, kids are free I believe. They have special events there like this projectile mapping at night and unique lighting around the Castle Park. Castle Park is free and open 24 hours. If you go on Sunday, wake up early and enjoy the Sunday Market, biggest and oldest in Japan from 6am to 11am (slows down around 11am). Awesome street food!

Amazing experience. They have an exceptional view from the top and all historical explanations have an English version. Just one warning: the inner stairs are very steep.

Visited in May 2023 Although the castle building itself was erected in 1600s, I learned that an original old (although rudimentary) castle proceeded it. The leaders of Yamauchi clan found it abandoned and decided to build the current, more modern castle from the ground up. The castle wasn't as big as its contemporaries, especially considering the size of the city built around it. However, being one of those survived the calamity of World War 2 intact, it is a gift for generations to come. Like other Japanese castles, the climb to the top of the main structure is pretty arduous, with steep ladders. Nevertheless, the view of the city from the top is rewarding. Oh, and after descending from it, don't miss the the informative diorama displaying whaling activity in feudal Japan (Tosa region was one of the few that allows this industry in the past), which is almost as eye-opening.

A well maintained castle at the top of a hill. Some uphill walk is required and once you are in the castle itself, be careful of the very steep stairs, especially when coming down. There are no displays of swords or armour as it talks about the castle and history more than wars.

A great castle! It has many parts to visit and great views at the top! The explanations are both in English and Japanese and there are also English pamphlets. The entry is 420¥, but I recommend getting a set ticket for castle + museum at 900¥. The garden around the castle tower is also very nice to walk around and has explanations and different key areas.

Being one of the 12 original castles left in Japan this is a treat to visit, especially for history and castle enthusiasts. It has a rare Lord's Reception Room and unique anti-Ninja defences to look out for. The steps are steep and the lookout view is great.

I've visited quite a few castles and while I like them all, this is definitely one of the more interesting ones, especially because it has great English support. The castle and its lords all have a very interesting story. Beautiful view of the city, too.

A historical building with great history. When you reach the highest floor in this castle, then you can see entire Kochi city. Since this is one of the 100 Japan’s historical castles, it is a must visit place.

Absolutely beautiful area. You can really take in the ocean air and the sea is sparkling in the sun. We went in the morning and by the time we left after having lunch there was a line dozens of cars long trying to get in. The places to eat serve delicious food and the souvenir shop was full of things i wanted to buy.

Took the My-Yu bus bus there. The one day pass costs 1000yen and the beach is the last stop. Lots of visitors . Great to gaze at the Pacific ocean while walking on the beach. After that we went to have a view of Sakamoto Ryoma, rather majestic and authoritative. There are gift shops and snack shops to visit. If you are interested, you can also visit the aquarium.

The view was beautiful but there’s a warning sign for “no swimming allowed” for your eyes only.. you could see some of capybaras (from the zoo) on the path to the beach.

One of the best scenic sea beach I have ever been. Swiming is not allowed here. But you can enjoy the nature here in a combo of hills and sea. It is really amazing place. Car parking is available, may 400 yen for 24 hrs. You can go by bus as well. There are number of shops for omiyagi here. Resturant is also available here.

Wonderful beach and a must visit in Kochi. Was actually one of our highlights in our trip through Shikoku. A wonderful vibe - relaxed, happy and tranquil. The Pacific coast. I remembered wonderful times on Vancouver islands on the other side of the ocean.

Stunning & wild pebble like sand beach with an interesting shrine at one side. Unfortunately no swimming here - security guards instead of lifeguards warn of danger. Most visitors walk on path to shrine, but walking across sand near the crashing waves is breathtaking - just be careful not to get too close! ⛱️ The parking is 400yen & lots of shops around, it's a long walk to beach around the fence 😩 or up and over past the Ryoma statue.

My wife and I came here in the evening of 27 March, 2023. But this isn’t a spot to see sunset. There’s nothing much on the beach side except the toilet. Our main interest was to see the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma. I don’t think we would come here again.

Has some History for this bridge about a monk and a lover

Mmm. A small bridge in the centre of Kochi. An odd attraction. Do not go to Kochi especially for this bridge.

It is just a little, rather short vermilion wooden bridge. The bridge tells the sad story of a love affair between a monk, Junshin and a woman, Ouma. They used to have secret meetings even though the monk's sect prohibited such relationships. Their affair was discovered when someone saw Junshin buying a hairpin at a shop near the bridge. Both Junshin & Ouma were banished to separate locations, never to see each other again. Look at the statues in front of the bridge, see if you can spot the hairpin.

It's a small bridge that has historical importance to it. Also a popular meeting spot for the locals.

Harimayabashi is right nearby a hotel. It makes you ignoring easily that place. However, the water along the stream is clear enough and small stones wrapped by green sheet. Beautiful!

Just an ordinary bright red bridge. But, it does, have its own charm and uniqueness and history.

A beautiful little bridge filled with so much history. It's almost as if you are taken back in time. As you walk across, on the one side you can look at a very calm and serene setting of a crystal clear little river surrounded by greenery and on the other side the bustling road where older taxis, trams and buses, mixed in with newer cars, go back and forth. If you go on the hour you'll be able to listen to the clock across the road play Yosakoi music while golden dancers come out to dance to celebrate the passing of time. A very short experience but worth it if you are willing to take in all the surroundings.

The bridge has a certain romance to it about forbidden love and it's tragic ending, but the best part is actually walking past the bridge through the shops towards the main shopping center of Kochi. There's some water and when I was there some really pretty blooming cherry trees dropping their blooms into the water below. A little gazebo was there too. Totally worth the walk with all the spring flowers. The bridge and statues aren't really much, but the area right behind the bridge is completely peaceful and worthwhile, and just past that you find yourself in the shopping district.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to climb up and get a closer look at the Sakamoto Ryoma statue for only 100 yen. Although the climb was somewhat unstable, it was well worth it as it provided a fantastic view of the sea from the top. Overall, it was a great experience.

Kochi Prefecture in Japan is famous for a samurai namely Sakamoto Ryoma. He was the most influencial and popular historical figure in Japan. Throughout the Kochi Prefecture you can find a numbers of statues of him. Sakamoto Ryoma Statue in Katsurahama is the biggest one.

Ryoma-sama's statue at Katsurahama is hugeeee! And it is also surrounded with flowers. There are lots of tourist who wants to take turns for a photo, unfortunately it rained when we came but of course we still made sure to take a photo. (Will add photos soon)

If you know Ryoma, or are interested in this samurai, you must visit this place along with the museum nearby. The samurai who played a quite an important roll in Japan's history used to look at the pacific ocean and think about the future of the world and Japan.

Stretching across a few streets, there were many stalls . Most of the stalls sell agricultural products - vegetables, fruits., flowers. We went there hoping to get a good breakfast but was disappointed. The only stall with places to sit to eat is at a udon stall. As such , there were many customers, q up for 30 minutes before we got our order. Seats were limited. A other stall selling hot food is a stall selling meat skewers and Okonomiyaki. The other food choice is cakes , bread, biscuits. No stalls selling hot coffee/ tea. It is a good place for locals to get their daily groceries but for tourists ,just a place to look, see , go take photos

One of my favorite spots in all of Kochi! The Sunday Market goes beyond just the delicious food with its local, wholesome, community vibe😍 I had a lovely conversation with a local grandma who kindly shared how she makes her delicious konnyaku (devil's tongue) all by hand!😳 Also, I had no issue finding some lovely vegan options too, including baked goods (DELICIOUS carrot cake!) and inaka-sushi (veggie-based sushi - just make sure to check the ingredients because sometimes they use fish stock✅) A quintessential Kochi experience😋🌟

Pleasant weekend market stretching now than a km on the main street through to the Kochi castle. Most of the market is selling the same things though, mainly fruit and vegetables, not much variety. Saved to my Shikoku bucket list. I have spent quite a bit of time in Kochi City and love the laidback vibe of the place, but my visits have yet to fall on a Sunday. We only explored the area near the southern exit but the conservatory, plum blossoms and azaleas were absolutely wonderful. Much of the garden was barren, due to being out of season i think, but the places where flowers were in bloom were great.

Very nice gardens even when it is raining, tho I think it would have been better in the sunshine, altho the low clouds and mist coming down the mountain, and the way it looks on the hills made intriguing photo shoots, so who knows! A beautiful garden with great varieties of plants. A pity I had only two hours and a half to go around. The restaurant has only about 10 tables, so expect to queue up for at least 15 minutes if one comes at lunchtime.

Almost gave this four stars instead of five, mainly for the difficulty in going. There seems to be just one narrow road up a mountain in the middle town. It’s one way at least, although I didn’t know that until I went down. Finding the entrance is not easy. Once you get there, this is a hell of a Botanical garden. We took the My-Yu bus to visit this Temple 31 of the Shikoku 88 temples pilgrimage tour. Impressive, awesome temple. Do not miss the 5 story pagoda.

Ring the bell, pass the guardians, check the 2 prayer areas and trinkets and charms, then be impressed by the 5 story pagoda. Also, walking distance to a scenic overlook and The Makino Botanical Gardens (as shown in the NHK drama RanMan). Easily a full day if you’re into it. Only 4 stars because it’s no Kyomizudera. It’s small but beautiful.

There is a special exhibition of paintings to celebrate the 1300th anniversary of the Temple. The sound system is bearly audible, perhaps to enjoy only in solitude. The little garden nearly looks like a painting, too. The Temple itself has nice setting. A pity the great Buddha images were cordoned off so one can only seen them from quite a distance. The other Buddha images are outdoor, and one can see them closely.

I really enjoyed this temple and the surrounding area. The road leading to it is pretty narrow. I think you'll need a car or the willingness to walk a long way in order to visit this temple. This was a nice place to meditate and pray.

There is a free audio guide and storage service (hand carry luggages only) for foreign visitors. The 4D theatre inside the museum is quite interesting. Sadly, most of the illustrations are in Japanese only. Visitors should have some basic history knowledge before coming to this museum. It’s comics & book corner is lovely though.

A museum to memorize a wise politician and artist

Lovely little museum with a gift shop with tons of funny Ryoma paraphernalia. There are two floors of exhibits and lots of animated/audio exhibits. Good for all ages but children will probably especially enjoy many of the exhibits. There seems to be an English guide but not much in the museum itself.

On 27 March 2023, my wife and I drove up here at night. The road leading up to the top of the mountain is narrow and winding. Apart from the Kochi city at night, we also saw some Sakura blossoms. The Park is good for young lovers enjoying their privacy inside their cars. Only when we left did we know that the road is one way traffic and is pretty safe!

I have seen so many places like this in Japan where there's a park that overlooks the city, they are all great and worth while visiting and this is no exception. The views of Kochi are spectacular, Godaisan Park is the type of place I could easily stay for a couple of hours staring at the views, I know I took a lot of pictures but I took time to savour the moment. Really neat place to visit.
