Izakaya Kaz
Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Izakaya Kaz is a Japanese restaurant located near The Pub, marked by a set of red lanterns. Despite initial difficulties in securing a table, the friendly staff eventually accommodated the guests. Although there were some language barriers and apparent understaffing, the service remained attentive. The sukiyaki set for two, along with drinks and dessert, amounted to 10,200 for two people.
We didn’t go for the hot pot instead we had a mix of dishes. The four of us shared plenty dishes and tried different japonese drinks. We loved it. After 10 days in Japan and always looked at trying different food and we found this place one of the best we have been to.
Florian Guillemard — Google review
Great food. Book aheqd though. They fill up quickly.
Nate Wilson (natskis) — Google review
This place shares a building with The Pub but that’s where the similarities end. The food at The Pub was a bit disappointing, while at Isakaya Kaz, it was decidedly better. The prices are higher at Kaz and you will need a reservation, it’s still probably the best of the 2 places. The karaage was fantastic and the sake flight was amazing. They do have a lot of fish so if that’s not your cup of tea then The Pub might be more to your liking.

Anthony Hughes — Google review
Really delicious, especially for a restaurant that caters specifically to hotels! We did the sukiyaki and thought it was incredible.
Naomi Lopes — Google review
Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely book ahead and make a reservation because this place is worth it. The sashimi is locally sourced and so fresh, you can taste good produce when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. Service were so friendly especially for foreigners and their sake options were stellar. Do hope they add more hot sake to the list, but the one they had was amazing! Wish we could book again but it’s very busy for a good reason.
Erin — Google review
Great service and friendly staff but we did not enjoy the food so much. We tried both the Kaz and Mansaku and both used the same shabu beef quality which was horrible. Convenient since we are staying at the hotel. But definitely not a repeat.
Myia Garcia — Google review
When we couldn’t get a table at Mansaku, we were looking for another Japanese restaurant nearby. We saw a set of red lanterns next to “The Pub.”
At first the receptionist said the restaurant was full, however, we could see empty tables. We insisted and she finally agreed to seat us (otherwise, I would give it 5-stars).
The staff has limited English but was very friendly. Although seemed short staffed for a full restaurant, they were attentive.
With a sukiyaki set for 2, with drinks and dessert, we paid ¥10,200 for 2 pax.
The food was excellent, the sukiyaki sauce was not overly sweet or salty.
Warning: the ventilation is not great, so your clothes will smell!

Chikozan Park is a picturesque park with a range of attractions for visitors to enjoy. The park boasts an impressive kids' zoo and botanical garden, as well as sports facilities, fishing spots and camping areas. The general playground is still functional and popular with children despite its age.

There are two playgrounds beside each other in the woods. A general playground and an athletic playground. The latter - the athletic playground - was done up late 2018. They removed all the old pieces and put in brand new pieces over a year. Its completed now. The general playground is old but functional and a big hit with kids.

Nice place for the kids, but could use a lot of refurbishment...especially the animal areas. Really run-down, weedy in some places. Admission is very reasonable, and the setting is nice. Nearest station would be Saiyama-shi, on the Seibu Shinjuku Line...from there, you should take a bus. Didn't see any place to eat, unless you bring a lunch. Parking available, if you come by car, bike, etc.

Saitama Children's Zoo, also known as Saitama Children's Animal Nature Park, is situated in Takasaka, Higashimatsuyama along the Tobu Tojo line from Tokyo's Ikebukuro. This zoo offers animal encounters and horseback rides, and additionally showcases Peter Rabbit displays in a Beatrix Potter Museum. It is considered to be one of the best animal nature parks in Japan with something for people of all ages.
Pretty zoo. It might not have like LOTs of animals, but the ones that are there look healthy and have a nice habitat. Also the place is big and it is such a nice experience to go.
The even have a "train" to move around the park.
There are restaurants, café and food trucks available inside the zoo.
It is worth checking the a activities they gave through the day so you can go on time.

This is one massive zoo! I should have worn sports/hiking clothes as there are lots of hills to navigate. The park maps are not free which was a little surprising. Seeing the quokkas was the highlight for me. A nice general atmosphere and great for families and couples.

It is super huge with lots of amazing and unique animals.
I recommend to visit it for a day.

Ken Villaluna — Google review
A really fun experience for an 8 year old and her parents. Lots of fun, educational, and interactive experiences. Reasonably priced entry fee, reasonably priced snacks and foods, and a very cool playground.
Much larger and better than we expected. I typically feel a bit sorry for captive animals So zoos can be as much of a bummer as they are interesting, but these enclosures were mostly good. Definitely will recommend this to other families.
Mark Robinsong — Google review
Close to Tokyo but still you can feel rich nature here. And it is very much enjoyable zoo with family members. In a adequate size, you can enjoy both watching animals and walking here.
Jun Amano — Google review
It's so much fun! Before going there, I was expecting it to be pretty small and to get around in about 2 hours at a stretch but it's huge. You could just enjoying walking around the place but there are loads of things to do. The admission price is cheap (seemingly too cheap - I thought I had heard the wrong price) and the animals seem happy and well looked after. As well as the animals there are other things to do like the adventure playground, shops and some really good food vans as well (see photo). I am going to recommend it to everyone!
Joe Bardon — Google review
A place definitely for children! The kids will enjoy looking at the animals and they'll learn about these animals too.
The place is big for walking, good for cardio!
We recommend this place for family, just bring your stroller if you have a child.

Very big zoo with several fun activities. Nice place to spend a day. Food options are not that great but shouldn't be a problem unless you are completely vegetarian or vegan. You can bring your own tiffin and can have at many places where you find good seating arrangement.

This is one of my favorite places to take my boys and my favorite zoo in Japan. Lots of space to run around and really is a kid oriented location with friendly staff. Dress comfortably because things are quite spaced out so there is A LOT of walking unless you pay a little extra to take the 'train' that goes around the place

Musashi Kyuryo National Government Park is a large park with seasonal flower gardens, plum tree forests, adventure courses, trampolines, and cycle paths. There are multiple fields in the park that require ample time to explore fully. The park offers various amenities such as walking grounds, bike paths, dog runs and rest areas for visitors to enjoy. Beautifully-landscaped park. Gardens with sculptures, pond, gurgling creek, open fields, bike route, paved and unpaved strolling paths.
Small enough park to walk all over, perfect for spending half a day or so.
Nice place for family, friends, couple, pets for relaxing & enjoying nature.
Would like to come back for evening lighting for garden/sculpture viewing.
If you feel more active, bike rental available, 450 yen for 3 hours. Lots of short stretches of moderate rolling hills on winding, paved route.
Fairly small park but the bike route feels wild with nature.
Plenty vending machines, bathrooms, cafes, and a few food trucks.
Fair parking, 650 yen, entire day.
Takes credit/debit card, but some spots cash only.

This park is huge!! Could return multiple times to see it all. Lots of events and with changing seasons even more to see. Wonderful.
David Kirwan — Google review
It's a huge park.
When we went there, three types of flowers were in bloom.
The fields are so far apart from each other, so you'd need a lot of time to cover everything. We arrived late so it's on us that we did not get to see everything.
It's a very good park. Lots of places to rest, limitless walking grounds, a really nice bike path and a dog run.
¥450 entrance fee.
Jen Marquez — Google review
You need a complete one day to enjoy the most of this park. The entrance fee to the park itself is not that much (450 yen) but car parking is expensive(700 yen)! Though there are cheaper parking spaces available (not official) nearby they get full immediately so be sure to go early. Some are available at 100 yen also.
Visited the park in October and April. They have different flowers on display near the West gate depending on the season. In April, Nemophila, poppies and tulips were in full bloom.
Be sure to check which parking is closer to which attraction. Be ready to walk a lot. Although bus service is available, it is not that frequent.

If you're going here I recommend buying the Set Tickets from Tobu. It's available in the eMot app and you can use it from Ikebukuro. It's a set of Roundtrip Train Tickets, Bus Tickets to the park and also the Entrance Fee. Total of around 1700yen.
The whole park was big so need a comfortable shoes to roam around the park. They have different Flower Gardens depends on the Season. Went during May this are the flowers there.

This place is so good! I recommend to rent a bike here. We can ride around the park, since the park is huge. I went to this park in spring. There are three type of flowers; lupine, nemophila and poppy. The entrance fee is ¥450 and rent a bike is around ¥400/ 3 hours. I really like this place!

Nestled at an elevation of over 3,000 feet atop Mount Mitake in Tokyo's Ome City, Musashi Mitake Shrine is a historic red Shinto shrine accessible by a scenic cable car ride. The shrine boasts intricate murals, carvings, and statues, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient Japanese art and culture. Pilgrims can also experience traditional Japanese meals and accommodations at Higashibaba, which consists of buildings dating back 150 years.

100/100. Sorry for a long review but I will try to include everything so as to facilitate a reader.
Firstly, it would be better to consider a weather forecast. Since, in case of rain, the route especially around rock garden could be slippery.
Also, there is a different mountain Mt. Mitake in Hyogo region as well. So, don't confuse mountain with that one while checking the forecast.
I visited on 23rd of November and the fall foliage was in full bloom. Red, yellow and all type of leaves. There is a cable car and a lift both for ascending and descending.
Cable car : Takimoto station ---- > Mitakesan station
Chair life : Mitakesan station ---- > Top of chair lift
Cost of cable car is 600 one way (1100 yen two way)
Chair life is 100 one way (190 two way)
Combined ticket of cable car and chair lift is (1320 two way)
Chair lift was fun and easy. It was like your feet could touch the ground. And for only 100 yen, was like a gold.
And view from cable car was stunning as well. I recommend using it at least for ascending. And seat in the 1st cabin downward to see the full view of Mitake and Oku-tama.
The roads are very easy if you prefer to trek instead of cable car as well. But there could be a possibiity of getting lost in the jungle especially in the dark (evening time).
Also using the chair lift, won't decrease your trekking time much since you need to come downwards from top of lift station to connect to the main route to shrine.
But both Cable car (for ascending) and chair lift (in particular) is definitely worth it.
Also, I recommend to take a map in the visitor service or in information center before ascending.
Then from top of chair lift,
It is an about 40 minutes walk upwards (with lot of stairs) to Musashi Mitake Shrine. It is a very difficult trek because of many stairs. Even we felt really hard at the end. Roads are all pitched though till the top of the shrine.
From Musashi shrine,
There is a trek to Rock Garden and Ayashiro waterfalls. Both are near each other. And roads are very big and easy to walk even for small kids. And the jungle view is stunning with red leaves, falls, river flowing and birds chirping.
It is a round trip from:
Cable car --- > Chair Lift --- > Mushashi shrine --- > Ayahiro Falls --- > Rock Garden --- > Observation deck ---- > Musashi shrine --- > Chair lift ---- > Cable Car
If interested, there are also trekking routes to:
- Mt. Otake
- Nanayo Falls
- Mt. Hinode
There are probably other venues as well.
Finally, the last cable car and the bus is available at 18:30 pm so try to reach there as early as possible to enjoy nature peacefully while taking your time.
This is one of the most hiked mountain in Japan. So, it is definitely a must from the beginners to experts.
Sushant Hada — Google review
Definitely overrated as a shrine and as a location. The view is not as spectacular as many other shrines I’ve seen in Japan. The main selling point is the accessibility from Tokyo.
Dennis Ginsig — Google review
Musashi Mitake Shrine, where a mythological wolf guided legendary warrior turned emperor Yamato Takeru to safety. Believe it or not, the air at 929 meters above sea level is fresh and climbing all these stairs is good for your blood pressure and calorie burn. In regular, non COVID times I saw some gift offering rituals in the back, more sacred area, but I’m not sure all of them are held today. It was also sad to see a lot of the shops and hotels struggling and either close permanently or temporarily. So if you’re a dog-person (or any pet) do yourself a favor, support small businesses, get your pet an omamori and stay healthy by visiting this amazing place.
Omri R — Google review
Get off at the Mitake train station. You can take the bus and cable car to get to the shrine. Or you can hike up the mountain.
The shrine is pretty nice but there are lots of steps. It is not disabled friendly so be aware . There are many walking paths and photo opportunity spots all around. It's a great way to experience something just outside of Tokyo.
Albert Nakano — Google review
Beautiful scenery and a great exercise hike 👍 The shrine was just the start of a really fun yet challenging hike and the trees during the fall were bright and colorful, so the trip seemed much more relaxing. Just a wonderful experience to have. I'd recommend it for anyone who is physically able.

Very nice and cool!
It almost feels like I’m in an online game starting off from the base camp out into the battle ground after buying your supplies in the stores 😀😀😀
From Mitake station, you have to to take a bus going to the first base. You may take a ride using the cable cars to send you into the starting point of the hike but if you really want to challenge yourself right from the start, hiking yourself to the starting point would be great too.
Great views and nice treck. Everything feels so sacred. It feels like you can hear the spirits of nature at play.
Mount Mitake is a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers, located just a 1-2 hour drive or train ride from central Tokyo. The area offers stunning views of lush greenery and surrounding mountains. Visitors can take a funicular or hike to the peak, where they'll find the Musashi Mitake Shrine dedicated to a white wolf deity. The mountain is part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, featuring walking trails, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes.

It's a pretty awesome place to hike. Easy for beginners. You can take a bus right outside Mitake station, turn left, cross the road, and turn left. Or just ask the visitor centre and ask for a map.The bus is scheduled, so do take note of the time. Once you board the bus, it will take you all the way to near the cable car. You will need to walk uphill for 5 mins to reach the cable car station. Once there, I suggest you take note of the cable car timing to prepare the time to descent. After exiting the cable car station, you will need to walk for abt 10 min on a stretch of road to reach the town. To even reach the start of the walk to the shrine, you will need to cont uphill inside the town. Those who are planning for the Nanayo waterfall, you will need to go to near the shrine, and turn left, follow the sign board. Overall, you can walk 1 loop to the nanayo waterfall> rock garden> ayahiro fall> cedar trees> shrine. Spent a total of 2.5 hr or less for the route. Its steep initially will downhills and slopes then slippery rocks and icey pathways w snow, followed by gentle path back to the shrine.

This is a nice daytrip hiking to go to when staying in Tokyo. We spent our last 6 days in Tokyo again and intended to see nature spots as well. We picked Mitake san in our options before starting the journey.
From Tokyo, you can reach the valley easily by taking train. You may need to change trains depending on the city's part you're staying. Take the Chuo-zen and get off at eki. You may either take the bus for a small amount or simply walk to the cable car. We decided to walk to enjoy the mountains, the beautiful dale and nature. Though the last part of the road is pretty steep and is kind of a cardio workout, it was really worth it.
We took the cable car up. Even there the view is awesome. At it's destination, you can walk up the remaining path to the summit. It's comfortable to walk and takes around 20 mins.
Along the way you find some restaurants and houses. The way to summit is marked by signs but you need to keep the Japanese Kanji in mind as it is not always written in English. Someone tried to be funny and added English descriptions to one sign, but exchanged two summit names.
The summit has a temple and therefore is different than e.g. Takao-san. The view is nice as well and shows mountains and the city area in the background.
We liked the hiking and the area a lot, because it is less crowdy than other spots. The valley is extremely beautiful and reminded us of a slightly bigger Japanese version of the Ahrtal (Ahr river valley) in Germany.

Easily accessible by train. Good for a day trip outing. Can take the Cable cart too. Need to walk a bit to reach the Nanayo waterfall. There is a place mentioned as Rock Garden but actually there is no specific Garden such as instead the route to Ayahiro waterfall is surrounded by rocks and the water stream in between that is the Rock Garden.

Mount Mitake is about an hours drive from Tokyo. It’s a beginner hiking mountain which takes about 4 - 5 hours to hike all the from the bottom to the summit whilst visiting all the major scenic spots. It’s a little harder to get to compared to all the other mountains which means there’s less people. The autumn leaves are quite nice and there are many of those kind of trees!
Ken Liew — Google review
Amazing walk, 800 trees ish for you to count with on your hike up the mountain! It would be best to go hi vis or wear a bell so that you may be safer on the road. It is a bitumen road shared with cars. The track is maybe an hour long up and half that on the way down. I would recommend skipping he cable car if fitness and time allows!
Mind you there are other beautiful hikes once you reach the summit also.
The cable car can be reached by a bus (¥210 one way) from the station (about 100m left of the train station exit as you leave)

View from the top is good but not spectacular. It's quite a drive from Tokyo (about 90 minutes) and there isn't much you can do here. Most of the restaurants are not opened and there is literally nothing to do except visiting the shrine and sovenirs shops. I can see why this place is good for hikers but if you are a casual traveller, might make sense to miss this altogether.

It was a good hiking experience after a long break. The trail is not hard at all, most beginners can easily hike the mountain. On top of the mountain there’s a shrine. If you are lucky or well informed you can catch festivals too. The scenario is so so.

I'll never travel to Nagano without this trip planner again
Lake Okutama is a picturesque man-made reservoir nestled amidst the stunning mountains and verdant forests of Chichibu Tama National Park, making it a popular day trip destination from Tokyo. The area offers various activities such as hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and an information center known as "Yama-no-Furusato Mura." Visitors can enjoy camping facilities, log cabins, BBQs, guided hiking tours, and workshops for crafting activities.
Definitely an must visit place if you are Japan. One of the beautiful places I visited. Prefered time to visit is autumn. You can get busses from Okutama station to Lake Okutama. The journey with mountains valleys and autumn colours will be amazing to see. Get down at the dam and spend sometime there. But the real view comes later take the bus from the dam again and get down at Ideno bus stop. This place seems like no where but if you walk a little 100m from the bus stop you can find a opening that will lead you down hill and directly to the bank of the lake. You can get the best view of Lake and the surrounding mountains from here. It was stony and dangerous but also exciting and thrilling.

Nice lake to walk about. However, you have to take note of the bus timing if you are travelling by bus. It is not that frequent. Overall, you can spend less than 1 hour here. I have included the bus timing
1. From okutama station.
2. From lake okutama.

I came here by bus from Okutama JR station. I stopped at Lake Okutama “奥多摩湖”. Firstly, I surprised about the big lake and it’s beautiful deep blue color. Then I climbed the observatory to see the whole scene of the Lake, the Ogouchi dam, the mountains. It was a bit scary to look down from the window but it was a great view.
There is a good atmosphere and a beautiful nature here. I was healed so much from my busy days.

I hiked up to the lake from Okutama station, took about 3 hours, then had lunch and a beer on the other side of the dam. The views were absolutely stunning!
I then ventured around the lake. My target was the pontoon bridge, which I reached after about 3 hours of walking. All flat, so not challenging, but I was already tired from the hike. I ran out of water about halfway through, and there was no opportunity to get some more, all of the taps along the way weren't fit for drinking. I think taking a 2 litre bottle should be enough for a hot day.
Last bus from near the temple is about 5:30 I think, so I was in a bit of a rush at the end, and unfortunately, I didn't get to explore the temple.
Still, keep an eye out for monkeys, the newborns can be spotted in late spring/early summer!

Hitsujiyama Park is a picturesque setting known for its vibrant flower displays, making it a popular destination in spring. The park features Shibazakura, a unique type of cherry blossom that carpets the area in various shades of pink and white, creating a stunning contrast against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can enjoy outdoor activities and take in the beauty of thousands of cherry blossoms blooming like a fluffy pink carpet at this scenic park near Tokyo.
One of the beautiful seasonal parks in Japan, known for the pink and white moss shapes, the best period to visit is between april and early May
Fathia Alkelae — Google review
Hitsujiyama Park, Chichibu, is known for its attractive moss-pink field. Open hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the festival from mid-April to early May. The ticket price was just 300 yen per adult, and it’s really worth it. The ticket counter staff and other staff were really kind and friendly. The park is well maintained, and they have some beautiful flower decorations too. They had 10 types of flowers there, and those flowers are lovely and take away all stress. This hillside park is pretty crowded during festival season, but you can still enjoy it. You can enjoy a variety of foods from stoles in addition to the moss pink yard. There are plenty of food styles, which include Japanese traditional cuisine. The food was really yummy, and the vendors were really nice. When you go a few steps further, you can see a few sheep on their small farm. Sometimes we can’t actually watch sheep at the zoo, so I feel so happy. However, take my advice: if you go during peak season, please be ready to walk, or else you can get on a taxi too. I walked from Chchibu station to Hitsujiyama Park, and it took me 20 minutes, but it was a nice experience. This gorgeous park gives you fresh air to breathe. It was worth visiting this garden again, and I hope to go there next year too.

Hitsujiyama Park from Chichibu Saitama medium size park with pink moss. It’s not that full bloom when we visited just yesterday May 3, start of golden week. It’s free park no entrance fee. They have also some food stall with beer, udon soba and some miso potato. It’s too hot in the afternoon so bring sun block as well or your umbrella. It’s also far from station, we did walk bus there’s taxi or bus you can ride to get to the park.

Went there on the 1st of May and the flowers were no longer as well bloomed. The journey here from Yozoke station would be recommended over Seibu Chichibu as it is more of a gentle incline compared to coming up from Seibu Chichibu.
Would highly recommend stopping at Yozoke station and making that slightly longer but more comfortable walk if keen to come visit this park.

Chichibu Shrine is a well-known Shinto shrine that attracts visitors with its intricate carvings and sculptures as well as numerous festivals and events. It is one of the three famous shrines in Chichibu, along with Mitsumine Shrine and Hodosan Shrine. While many people are familiar with the "Three Monkey" sculptures at Nikko Toshogu, few know that there is another version embodying the principle of listening, observing, and talking to prevent fights.
A lot of shrines seem very similar to me but this one is worth a visit. After you buy your omikuji fortune paper, you dip it in a pond to reveal the fortune. I really enjoyed this! Also, the charms at the shrine are very cute. I will go back come the new year to buy one for myself and my friends. Lastly, it’s worth it to go on December 3rd for the night festival (UNESCO). The fireworks and the floats are beautiful. It is very cold though so stay warm.

The shrine is beautiful with very nice wooden painting and carving on the entire building. It can get very crowded during the new year week. There are a lot of street food stalls during this time. Some traditional Japanese Shinto ceremonies are also carried out around this time.

Very good location with an interesting history. The monkeys illustrated here have the opposite positive meaning to those in Nikko - instead of see/speak/hear no evil, they encourage people to see/speak/hear good

One of the 3 famous shrines in Chichibu (i.e. Mitsumine Shrine, Chichibu Shrine, Hodosan Shrine). Most people knows the "Three Monkey" sculptures at Nikko Toshogu, embodying the proverbial principle "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". However, only few know there is another version of "Three Monkey" as opposed to that of Nikko Toshogu, embodying "Listen Well, Observe Carefully, and Talk to prevent fights". Besides, there were also sculptures like "Child Treasure Child-rearing Tiger" and "Bridging Dragon" made by famous sculptor Hidari Jingoro

Nagatoro Iwadatami is a picturesque location situated in the mountains of Saitama Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. The area has been designated as a prefecture nature park and preserve, featuring a forested river canyon that is lined by layered rock formations. It is an unusual terrain with a series of huge rock formations. There are many people near the boat pier, but as you move away from that area, the number of people decreases. It is a very relaxing place rich in nature. The kids enjoyed their rocky adventure. We can find many tadpoles and frogs here. The view of the boats on the river is also beautiful. The boats are very popular and you may have to wait in line for quite a while to get tickets.

Beautiful place to enjoy the nature. But not really recommended to visit in winters (of course you can just mark it off on the checklist). Preferably go in spring/summer. DON'T do the boat ride. The Hodosan Shrine is located at the base of Mount Hodo and features ornate carvings. Visitors can take a nearby ropeway to reach the summit. The shrine is well-cared for, clean, and adorned with colorful charms and goshuin books. Hodosan shrine enshrines the Emperor Jimmu who founded Japan. I instantly felt an atmosphere, enhanced by the shinto music playing on the grounds, as we approached the torii of the shrine.
The benevolence of the shrine is believed to be protection from disasters. It is a common place for hikers to pay homage as one of the three Kami (Gods / Deity) enshrined here is a mountain deity. But it is also because the shrine has a sub branch at the top of Mt Hodo - hikers pray at the base shrine and then climb to the top of Mt Hodo and devote there too.
The architecture of the almost 2000 year old shrine is magnificent. The various auxiliary shrines are impressive too. And the grounds are beautiful. It is easily accessible by public transport too, as you can walk up from Nagatoro station in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Conveniently located near the train station, it provides easy access to public transportation and popular attractions such as Takasaki Castle and Haruna Shrine. This is a bit of a slog but a very beautiful shrine, with great hiking nearby. There is water and snacks for sale at the shrine, but very little on the trails. It's best to go early, as the bus from Mitsumineguchi to the shrine takes almost an hour, and we were packed in like cattle. In the winter! Lots of wolf statues and torii gates. The shrine itself has services, and is flanked by two sacred trees that you walk out on a walkway to worship/appreciate. Worth the trip, but be prepared to stand up for a while to get there.

For me, shrines in Japan have always been something I tried to avoid due to them being so similar and not really offering anything unique. And this still stands for shrines in Tokyo. Outside of Tokyo though, the shrines are beautifully surrounded by nature.
Mitsumine shrine in Chichibu, Saitama is up ontop of a mountain with a superb view (if the weather is nice). Its not too crowded and if you're brave enough you can even hike up. It must be really worth it.

It is located in the Okuchichibu Mountains in Saitama Prefecture. It is said to be the strongest power spot in the Kanto area, overflowing with the power of nature. The "enmusubi tree" is said to be 800 years old, and the "chi" from the sacred tree is said to be 800 years old. The "Haruhai-den" (far hall of worship) is also popular for its spectacular view of the sea of clouds, if you are lucky.

If you decide to drive, be sure to pack some snacks and to be careful on the road. The hour drive from chichibu is completely uphill on a very narrow road. There's two rest stops along the way, but there's no way to stop once you're at the base of the road leading to the shrine.

Beautiful shrine in the mountains. Options to include a mountain hike.
Mitsumine is a beautiful shrine high on the mountains outside of Chichibu (a little under an hour's drive). It is a great experience that is highly recommended. If you are feeling particularly energetic, you can hike from the temple (there's a good parking lot where you can leave your car) to several nearby mountain tops (between three and ten kilometres hiking away).
Even if you're feeling less energetic, the temple offers great views of the area around. One tip would be to explore the temple before lunch and eat at the little restaurant on the temple grounds which has a balcony overlooking the mountains.

This place is absolutely beautiful and worth even a long drive to see it. You'll probably have to pay Y1000 yen for parking (that you can put towards the shops items like apples or miso etc). You can find free parking at the traffic light slightly south of the falls. This place is beautiful all year but I recommend autumn as the colours are just amazing. If you're interested in taking great photos, best to go really early in the morning because this place is a tourist attraction with lots of visitors.
Jigen-in Temple (Byakue Dai-Kannon) is the oldest temple in Osaka, featuring a beautiful garden and tea ceremony house. Although it appears attractive from a distance, visitors may find it underwhelming compared to their expectations. However, smokers can use the ashtray at the base of the statue Infront – an uncommon sight in such places. It's advisable to plan additional activities nearby if one intends to visit this Buddhist temple.
A fun visit to a local monument towering over the city. An easy 30 minute diversion worth the experience and the views. Don't miss some wonderful hikes in the area as well accessible from the parking lot.

Very serence place. The statue is 41 meters high. You need a car to conveniently visit the temple. If you’re hopping on a bus, plan ahead and take the Kannonyama Bus # 13 or 14 at platform 8 in Takasaki bus terminal.
Jerv — Google review
Nice to see it from afar, looks nice, but I would put something else on the list if you want to visit just here.
As in, if you plan to come here to see this, add something else in the area as this was a bit more underwhelming than I had originally anticipated.
If you smoke, there is an ashtray at the base of the statue Infront, something you won't really see at places like this.

This temple is set atop a forested hill on the outskirts of Takasaki, a medium-sized city. Its main feature is an enormous statue of the Buddhist goddess of mercy. For a cost of 300 yen, you can climb the statue via an internal staircase and peer out over the hills and forest.

Nice little temple with a large kannon statue that you can climb stairs to her shoulders. There are hiking trails around the area and a couple of shops. Free parking.

Impressive statue. Worth the detour. When I went at beginning of March not too many people so very relaxed. There are some trails to walk. Bus or car or an approx 40 min walk to the top.

The statue itself was absolutely beautiful. I would suggest coming to this area in the beginning of August as they have a lantern festival there. Unfortunately due to covid we weren't able to enter the statue, but we wandered around the beautiful area, where there were many little shops and attractions. Make sure to get here before 6 pm during lockdowns as they close quite early.

Very peaceful temple. Very beautiful views all around. You can go inside the statue! Especially pretty with momiji, and probably sakura too! Cafe open 4 days a week.

Great location to start your walk about- view the giant Goddess of Mercy Statue then on to the shrine. Walking further past the souvenir shops would bring u to a route through the park/forestry reserve area with some stunning views of a suspension bridge. Quite a walk so do go prepped with walking shoes n light gear with a light jacket just in case the wind acts up. After approximately 45-60 mins into the walk there is a turn off on the left which is signed (unfortunately only in Kanji) which denotes the route down a series of broad steps to the caves. There’s refreshments n a short tour at the caves if one is interested. In front of the caves is a bus stop which one can catch the direct bus back to Takasaki Station, near to the stop is a nice Cafe situated opposite across the road from the bus stop. It serves excellent tea/coffee n cakes- a nice finishing touch to a great walk about. The owner is very friendly, welcoming and very helpful. They also do great dinners but we did not have the benefit of time to experience it. It was a wonderful day trip to experience Takasaki, Gunma.

Road Station Kawaba Denen Plaza is a convenient and peaceful rest stop along the toll road. It features a farmer's market, various dining options, a water element, and a bridge in tranquil surroundings. This location is especially ideal for families looking to grab lunch or spend half a day exploring. While most shops close by 5 PM, the ample parking and spacious seating area make it an enjoyable pit stop.
Pretty place! Nice to walk since sitrs are nice despite the cold weather. Locals sell their produce here too. And there are several food shops in case hungry.

Beautiful place to stop off at if you're passing through. Good place to buy souvenirs and have lunch. Very scenic with lots of free parking. You can even camp nearby. This place is surrounded by other cool places like Numata park, Bokyo Line, Tambara Lavandar park etc. The only problem with this place is that it's extremely crowded. They also have a pet dog named DEN who from what I can tell is caged up 24/7 and that made me sad.

Biggest and best roadside station I've ever been to (of about 50). Its more like a food theme park or resort than a roadside station. There are 7 car parks, several eateries, a farmers market, a rest area, outdoor and indoor seating, a nursery, toilets, smoking areas, and a brilliant free play area. Its a very popular spot particularly on weekends, so there are often queues.

Very nice spot to stop by especially for family and for lunch. Most of the shops there closes by 17:00, so not a good dinner stop. Though they have large parking, large sitting area with multiple different restaurants and shops. They even got a pond and kids playground. You can easily spend half day there. Really quick drive from Numata town. If you are near by or looking for a cool family camp area then I recommend to stop by this place.

A laidback and beautiful rest stop which many locals stop by. Has an infrequent shuttle bus directly from Numata (沼田) station for visitors who don't drive. You won't go hungry here as there are many shops selling really tasty food. Has a decent official website to introduce all the food you should try there. Strongly recommend trying to local made yoghurt from the milk factory and the sanzoku-sho set (山賊焼) from the meat factory.
Stamp collectors can get a unique stamp from the visitors' center. Manhole hunters will be pleased to find a cover with a design for Kawaba region near the bus stop.

After picking strawberries at Harada Farm on the HIS bus tour, we were taken to a dining facility called Harada Farm Fruit Village in nearby Numata City, Gunma Prefecture for lunch, where we enjoyed all-you-can-eat crabs and more.
Crab in Gunma Prefecture, a prefecture without sea? That's what I thought, but I love crabs so I'm happy♪
(According to my friend who was traveling with me, it seems that this is because crabs are imported to Japan at a low price because the United States has embargoed seafood such as crabs from Russia due to the Russia-Ukraine war.)
This all-you-can-eat course includes not only boiled snow crab, but also grilled crab, crab hotpot, crab gratin, crab shumai, fried crab claws, crab rice, and homemade sweets, so we had a lot of fun for 50 minutes.
It's great to have raw eggs for rice porridge♪
I had to refill the boiled crab about 3 times, and each one had plenty of meat and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Also, the miso in the hot pot was sweet and the crab soup worked well, making it quite delicious♪
Harada Farm's all-you-can-eat crab menu allows you to enjoy crab to your heart's content and is highly recommended!

I made a reservation and went strawberry picking.
After checking in, I took a minibus to the house.
We ate inside a fairly large house, so it didn't feel crowded.
In the reservation section, it was stated that condensed milk was available, but when I actually went there, I was told that there was no condensed milk because this year's product was sweeter, so please be careful if you are planning to go strawberry picking.
The only toilet available is at the reception area, so it was a bit inconvenient while I was strawberry picking.
The sweets and drink set that I could choose after returning was a nice bonus.

The Gunma area is where they grow the most of the roots in Japan that are turned into konyakku, a slightly tasteless paste which can be shaped into a lot of forms. It is very popular because it essentially has zero calories.
But it is extremely popular and the lines can be murder on public holidays. We got there at 9 which is opening time, and had to stand in line 2.5 hours for the buffet.
The big draw is the free buffet of konyakku products, but there is also a gift shop and you can visit the factory.
Personal recommendation: try the liver konyakku and the fruits jellies.

This is an interesting place to visit if you’re in the area. I’m not a big konnyaku fan, but it’s completely free to tour the factory and partake of the buffet.
My friend and I visited on a Saturday so the factory was out of action, but you could still walk around the tour area and see the machinery and read the information.
The buffet was interesting if not entirely to my tastes. Suffice it to say that the desserts selection was better than the savoury.
There’s a big store area with all conceivable types of konnyaku product available to buy. There is also a convenience store on site and a small supermarket. There are free foot baths too, but you’ll need your own towel.

There are two rather large buildings that you can walk through one has a second story with a few exhibits you can read about. There's not that much walking since the museum is quite small.
Fees: We paid $1,000 yen per person, but there are discounted rates for children.
Food: There are several places for small snacks and light meals outside of the museum. We didn't try any of them and so can't recommend.
Parking: There's no parking specific to the museum but there are small parking lots spread around town at the entry. Going rate is $500 yen for a full day.

The moment I visited it was under refurbishing and main interior aspects were hidden somewhere instead photos and panels were exhibited.
Despite under construction they charge visitors NORMAL admission fee JYen 1,000 plus extra charge of JYen 200 for you to see actual construction. NO way. It should be opposite as the appearance value of the venue is less than so expected as World Cultural Heritage(WCH).

Tomioka Silk Mill dates from 1872 and is one of the earliest extant examples of an industrialised mill or factory from Japan. It stopped producing silk reels in 1987 after 115 years and has now become a museum showcasing Japan’s industrial heritage. It features detailed and informative displays about the history of the site and the silk making process. Entrance costs 1000 yen. The town is best visited from the nearby city of Takasaki.

Stunning views from this skybridge 2700 feet above sea level. The valley below is about 2000~2100 feet above sea level. If you are afraid of heights its best to walk across when there is no-one else on it as it does shake when there is a group on it or if kids are running across it.
There is a coin box at the entrance and they request 100 yen per person over 6 years old for passage.
The bridge is accessible from Mahobanomori campsite, but you don't have to be a guest of the site to use the bridge - its open to the public. There is a playground across the otherside.

Ikaho Shrine is a serene place of worship that dates back to the 9th century. To reach the main temple, visitors must climb 365 steps, which is believed to bring good fortune. Along the way, there are various shops and buildings that add character and charm to the surrounding village. Some of these structures are remnants from a prosperous era in history and evoke feelings of nostalgia. The shrine itself offers stunning views and an opportunity for peaceful contemplation.
An interesting temple! You need to climb 365 stairs to reach the main temple. In the meantime, you can enjoy many shops along the way. Food, amusement, drink, onsen. The oden here is also really delicious. But the best food is definitely the soft cream!!!

The temple was rather OK, but what steal the show is the surrounding shops and village that has a lot of character and vibe. Ikaho Onsen Stone Steps is a historic landmark featuring a 400-year-old staircase lined with eateries, souvenir shops, and ryokan inns. Visitors can indulge in the open-air bath filled with hot water from Ikaho-onsen's renowned spring, 'Ogon-no-yu'.
Can become cold after 4:30pm as the sun sets earlier from Autumn. Well maintained with a beautiful view at the top. Shops here close early in Autumn. Roads are narrow you prefer driving nearby/in town.

Very cool little area with a photo area at the bottom and tons of shops along the stairs. There’s food, gift shops, stationary, souvenirs and more. We enjoyed stopping at the shops along the way up. There was a good amount of people since it was the weekend. There’s a shrine at the top and if you keep going there’s an open air hot spring too. Great little adventure, with lots of things to look at. There’s vending machines and a few places to stand / sit along the way.

Ikaho doesn’t really have much to do compare to Kusatsu but everything is compactly located and easy to look around. If you have a car you have lot more to visit such as green Bokujo, Taiwanese Temple, Chinpo-Kan, Shibukawa Onsen etc…
But you can still enjoy Ikaho without it.
One thing is though if you are trying to drink in your room, get your drinks and snacks as early as possible as the convenience store close to the stone steps run out of booze real quick.
After all, I prefer Kusatsu more but I recommend to visit this place once.
Tama-kon is a MUST try!!!!

This has to be one of the best walks I have done in Japan. It is quite the arduous journey up the roughly 250 steps. However the fall foliage views mixed with the nighttime lights of a shopping district are simply spectacular. And best of all you can enjoy it and even an outdoor footbath along the way all for free, discounting transportation costs of roughly ¥1000 round trip from Shibukawa JR station.
Tristan Bailey — Google review
One of Ikaho Onsen’s most well-known spots, is the 265-step stone staircase. These stairs which will be your walking trail as you stroll through Ikaho Onsen's hot spring town or going to Kajika Bridge.
They said that the staircase was originally only 315 steps, but was expanded to 365 steps in 2010. There is a variety of restaurants and stores surrounding the staircase. These stops will make a perfect rest stops. There are some games that you can play with a minimal fee. There are some day onsens along the way. There is a free foot bath as well and you can buy a towel from souvenir shops nearby.
There is a nearby municipal parking with a fee of 300yen but we opted to park near Kajika bridge.

Iconic stairs, nice atmosphere. Unfortunately shops along the stairs are quite disappointing with very few choice of decent restaurant. Would recommend to eat outside of Ikaho.

it was cloudy day, but the hospitality of the japanese small boutiques entrepreneurs were heartwarming.
foot onsen was a huge delight after hiking over the stairs of terraces that comes with a surprising entourage of small boutiques for omiage.
’tis a good place to unwind once in a while.

It is a good place for taking beautiful photos, good weather, beautiful views, atmosphere for a relaxing walk. It is the best source of natural hot spring for onsen.

Located on Mount Haruna, Lake Haruna is a picturesque caldera lake that offers various activities throughout the year. During winter, visitors can enjoy skating and ice fishing on the frozen lake while nearby campsites provide a comfortable stay. The autumn season offers stunning photo opportunities with its vibrant colors while restaurants around the area serve delicious food and snacks. Horse or horse cart rides are also available for those who want to explore the surroundings.
As an initial D fan, I deeply love this place

Haruna Shrine, an ancient Shinto shrine situated along Haruna River, hosts various festivals throughout the year and is a great spot for those in search of a place to pray solemnly. The construction of the shrine appears to be ongoing; however, it remains accessible via bus from Takasaki Station. Along the way, visitors can enjoy picturesque views of the area's scenery including remaining snow from previous days.
Super nice peaceful place I wasn’t expecting that good but it’s really awesome enjoyed a lot the waterfalls the mountains the trees and greenery all around

Beautiful, serene and tranquil shrine in the mountains of Takasaki City. This shrine is really old and now undergoing major renovation works. It's still very much worth a visit if you're in the area.

The shrine area was magical. It felt like walking into a fairy-tale. Also, I highly recommend the hike from the shrine to Haruna lake. It is difficult, but the view over the lake is amazing.

Good place to walk to a main building of the shrine. Also there are many nice Soba noodle restaurants in front of the shrine gate.
Akinori Giongawa — Google review
Not too touristy, 1,300 year old campus of shrines curved out on the side of mountains in Gunma Prefecture. Very somber, impressive buildings - not because they are foiled in gold or they have the record ranking size, but because they have quietly endured the time, and still existing. When I went there, it was the 2nd day of the New Year, and yet still, not too many people were there, daring the bitter cold air of the cedar woods and frozen water falls. I live in western NY, so I know cold - this place carried it's own winter bitter! True to the essence of Shintoism, even the smallest and the most eroded structures are still kept, tendered and their dieties are well respected. A little Cha-Ya (tea house) half way up the lane that's leading up to the main shrine, reminded me of how things were perhaps 1,000 years ago, treating those who have traveled days or weeks, or even month to get there, on foot. ( I'm pretty fit BUT their official "15 minutes to the top shrine" was a bit of a stretch - a handful of really old ladies in their 80- 90 something were walking with a cane, taking rest every few steps up a very steep stone starts) This place is famous for the plums. Their Plum Cake (Ume Manju) was very tasty, with a whole cooked plum inside, wrapped inside of not too sweet red bean paste.
Mohri Hime — Google review
A very good place to visit for those who are looking for a solemn place to pray. It's my second time to visit this Shrine and it seems the construction is not yet finished so I can't rate it 5 stars. From Takasaki Station, we ride a bus and stop on the foot of the Shrine. When we arrived, there are remains of snow from the last day. It took us 15minutes to reach the Shrine since we enjoyed the scenery Haruna Shrine offers. The road is cemented, there are few sloppy stairs but it's not that hard to ascend. I've seen a shop where you can buy foods in case you've got a hungry stomach. For those who have cars, there is parking near the entrance of of the Shrine.

Gunma prefecture has significant place in the history of japan and Mt. Haruna can be described as the one integrating the harmony and cultural depth of the japanese ethical principles. The shrine itself is complementary to the ethical practice.
Very calm, excellent atmosphere and elegant. If you get a chance to visit I recommend to hold some extra time and walk along side ways towards lake haruna. It's simply breathtaking..

A tranquil place with solemnity where you'll find a nice trail leading to a Japanese shrine of hundreds years old inside the mountain. Everything is so original without much artificial decoration. Lucky that not many foreign tourists (particularly.those from.mainland Chinese) know this place, the site remains quiet and one can really enjoy an escape of busy life here walking leisurely deep in mountain. Definitely a five star tourist site as of today.

Tanigawadake Tenjindaira is a ski resort situated at a high altitude and known for its powdery snow. It offers stunning views of Mount Tanigawa and opportunities for off-season hiking. The resort's natural snow is excellent, and all courses were open with all lifts operating during the last year's December 29th. Guests don't have to worry about long wait times before the lift as it is swift enough, unlike other ski stations that are slower in service.
Good views from the top of the Rodeway. Cold in winter!

It’s easy riding the Ropeway and the Lift to get to the top of Tenjin Daira, even after the snow melt in April and probably summer and the fall, until the Snow Ground restart in winter again!!

Visited in the middle of September, 2018. It was cold up there! Even raining slightly although the weather forecast said sunny all day. Cost around US$20 two ways, so not so cheap. Parking costs $5 but in the secure building where you buy tickets and find shops, cafes, restaurants and rest rooms.
Be prepared for the inclement weather if you stay outside for 10 mins.
For hikers and climbers, there are coin lockers, toilets, restaurants, even rooms for change clothing near the rope way station up there. Note that under severe conditions even in May or September, sometimes fatal accident happens every single year here. Listen local guides carefully and read blogs/guidelines by experienced Japanese climber or so.

On one hand, it is beautiful nature,
But on the other, it is a hard and unsafe climb in which you can easily slip off the path with no sagety bars as protection.
When it is rainy and windy, that is even more dangerous
Daphna Ofek — Google review
This area is probably one of the oldest and the famous mountains in Japan. The level of hiking goes easy to upper medium, depending on the course. There are cable cars that run every three minutes during the day, and ski lifts also run continuously, even in summer. This helps even Japanese senior people to visit near the top of this mountain. In winter, the while area will be covered with deep snow. In summer, we can enjoy semi/sub alpine vegetation. If you are with good hiking legs, you could walk up to the top. There was a shrine on top of the mountain! A very touristy location, so if you are a serious climber, you might skip the cable car and the lift altogether, and hike up from different hiking heads. Bear signs. 🐻

Fun experience. We got to snowboard right before the season ended so the slopes were a little slushy but it was still fun and enjoyable.
Phoua Kue — Google review
Excellent natural snow!
All courses were open on December 29, 2019 with all lifts operating.
No wait time before the lift. The lifts are swift enough ( in other ski stations they are really slow that your ski time could be eroded tremendously). We enjoyed skiing incessantly.
Although it is not a huge mountain, with this place's course settings are great for experienced and semi-experienced skiers and boarders.
If you are a early-riser, you can enjoy skiing from 7 AM.

The final station "Tenjindaira" was closed in this season, but the top of the gondola station was awesome! There was a cafeteria with Mountain view. Not so much menu variation but a cup of hot tea was enough for a resting. You can play with snow there!

Mount Tanigawa is a picturesque mountain with a summit that stands 1,977 meters high. This peak is renowned for its easy summer trails and challenging winter climbs. The ascent to the summit can be difficult, taking around three hours to complete, but the breathtaking scenery along the way makes it worth the effort. Although weather conditions may sometimes prevent clear views from the top, visitors are still appreciative of their experience and regard it as an awesome hike.

It is a beautiful lake and you could technically walk around it but you will be on the street where the car goes. Convenient ski resort coming from Tokyo ! Free shuttle bus from JR Echigo Yuzawa station to Naeba Prince Hotel. Though the hotel is a bit dated, it’s still a good option where you have everything you need for a relaxed ski holiday.
Have to mention the 2 onsens are quite crowded most of the time
Greenie YY — Google review
A Prince Resort with full range of services for everyone…except Snow scoots or Snow Moto’s only allowed on 3 of the lower lifts. This means you can’t access any of the upper slopes and only 1/2 of the lower.
Strangely the connected Kagura Tashiro and Mitsumata areas also owned by Prince resorts allow them 100% on all the lifts and runs!
WHY???
The hotel is way to expensive and there are many better choices in Yuzawa area.
The ski area itself is not very big and the runs are too steep for most…
The Kagura area is much better with a wider choice of terrain.

One of my favorite ski resorts in Japan! About 2 - 3 hours away from Tokyo. Tons of food options between the resort and hotel. Plenty of space for children of all ages. Slopes are more for beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders with a couple options for experts. Lots of activities and places to visit outside of the resort as well. Let Naeba be your first experience!!

Prince Hotel near the Naeba ski resort offers customers retro furnishings and all the necessary 70s amenities, classic dish choices from the era and staff service that encourages you to be independent and self-reliant.
If one wishes to relive or experience the unique charm of the 1970s, Prince Hotel provide their customers with a nostalgic journey at a reasonable price (about $800USD for seven days stay)
V L — Google review
Pretty good skiing here - all depends on snowfall. Well equipped with many different runs. Slopes were partly icy; the resort tries to keep the slopes usable by grooming every morning. Lifts were not too crowded but the two gondolas had long queues at times. Overall rating 7/10.
Dirk Hebecker — Google review
I like this place for the reason that it has all the planes and altitudes we need for fun with snow. From beginners to advance players can have fun at this resort be it ski or snowboarding. Even we have plenty places to have fun for childrens.
There are good enough food restaurants available there to quench your hunger. Rental gears are easily available at the spot or from nearby places around there.
Also, this place is accessible by bus 🚌 easily from Yuzawa station which is about 1 hour bus ride.
Kuber Sodari — Google review
Highly recommend checking the winds before you come skiing here. I dont know when they close the gondalas, but the winds were 13 gusting 35 and they were all shut down both days I was here. What you’re left with is two beginner lifts and two intermediate lifts, all shorter than 5 min rides. As an advanced skiier I had skiied the entire mountain and got bored within 2 hours. If you’re just starting out this might be an okay resort, but there’s no reason for an advanced skiier to come here on a windy day over Hakube or Shiga Kogen
