Visited on the first day of 2023 for the good luck new year blessing. Very crowded, but everyone was in polite manner. There's a special loop bus to digest the mass directly from Nagano Bus Terminal. It's my second visit at the temple, still as divine. The new year atmosphere is something I never experienced before. It was quite a journey!

Not my favourite temple in Japan, but its size is undeniable and the architecture is praiseworthy. The straight path to the main hall reminded me a bit of Kaminarimon. My favourite part was the underground walk in the darkness (don't cheat by turning on your phone)

Very beautiful and picturesque old temple. It is a national heritage site and the largest wooden structure in japan. The pagoda at the back of the temple complex holds the ashes of those that died during WW2. Very sacred place and worth this visit especially in winter.

This is an iconic location in Nagano. The temple area is so big and there are many shrines inside the temple area. During winter it's very attractive. It was highly crowded during weekend.

I went there to visit as a group visit during a Lamborghini event. A Beautiful temple in the heart of Nagano with different complexes. You can go up the temple to enjoy the views from the top. The temple where Kuukai the monk got raised. Very I interesting experience walking in the dark by touching the wall! The only tricky part is that you have to pay at every place you go… would be nice if there was one ticket for all. and it’s not too cheap if it adds up. But it’s I understandable as you need to maintain the temple to be visited by so many tourists !

Have visited this temple at night time, around 9PM 🫣 all the stores around are already closed. It was majestic at night because there was no crowd. Only the temple and the very silent sound of the area. You should try to visit it and stroll around the area!

Very cool temple in Nagano with a large complex of important buildings with interesting history! The temple itself is a very iconic building that has been the favorite temple I’ve visited so far in Japan. I’d recommend buying the combination pass (1200 yen) which allows you to enter to enter all the ticketed areas of the Temple grounds. Each is quite unique and worth a look. The Main Hall includes an underground passage which is quite dark and a fun experience to walk through! The Main Gate provides great views of the temple itself and the surrounding scenery. The museum offers many pieces of art related to the museum and the deities relevant to the temple. It also has a cool section with artifacts from when the 14th Dalai Lama visited Zenkoji. The last ticketed building has a large revolving storage for scripture that if you push it one full revolution will give you the same status as if you had recited all the scripture itself! Visiting Zenkoji is a must-do activity when visiting Nagano and the transportation is very easy from the city center! Also, the temple is surrounded by great small shops with souvenirs and some excellent food!

This is a beautiful and culturally important Buddhist temple. On the day we visited, there were hundreds of people. Many tourists were enjoying the beauty of the buildings, gardens, and statues. The locals were going about their rituals of prayer or celebration. Family groups celebrate their children's coming of age, dressed in their traditional kimonos. Worshippers receiving blessings from the priest or praying for good health. A great experience.

Main highlight to visit in Nagano. This gigantic buddhism temple has a long history over 1400 years. Before getting to the main temple, there is a shopping street where you can enjoy buying souvenirs or snack or food. The main temple offers an interesting activity that is, walking into a pitch black tunnel. You wont see a thing. What you do is to put your right hand on the walk and use it to guide your direction. There are a few turns there. As long as you hav your right hand on the wall it will be fine. It is believed that once you walk you are purified and then can go to get blessings with several places in the temple. There is also 'a key' in the tunnel ( I feel like a door handle) it is believed that if toy find the key in the tunnel, yoy will be blessed. It is about a waist level on the right and I reckon its about 2/3 of the journey. There are some other activities also like meditation (called zazen) and calligraphy.

30 min walk from Nagano station thru the main street to get there, with interesting shops/buildings along the way. Nice temple grounds.

It's the better asakusa in every way. Way bigger temple, nicer area, beautiful garden. More food stalls, better quality food and souvenirs, cheaper too. It's never crowded, almost no foreign tourists. It's one of the best places I've been to.

Personally had a decent time walking around all aspects of the temple and admiring its beauty and significance. Just sadly found the place a bit too over commercialised with the main hall of the temple with the Buddha for prayer costing people 700 Yen to pray. A bit too far from my perspective.

Stunningly beautiful location in the lovely city of Nagano. Would advise going early in the day as it gets a little busier later on. Well worth a trip into the main temple itself for a look around (no pictures, so take it all in!) and a talk to the staff there who are welcoming & explained to us (in very good English) the meaning of the temple & various adornments within. The rest of the grounds are picturesque with a mountainous backdrop against various temple buildings. We also left a Gankake-Kitsune as an offering at a small shrine & made a wish. Take your time to soak it all in & enjoy the serenity of this amazing place :)

Beautiful temple! Highly recommend visiting this place if you’re fortunate enough to visit Nagano. We visited on the 1.1.2024. Lots of lovely colourful shops with lots of souvenirs to purchase. The only thing I don’t recommend was the earthquake that we experienced! Very scary but all part and parcel of a fantastic experience at Zenkoji Temple.

Great experience. At 7 am is the ceremony and it worth it to be there so early in the morning. The surroundings are beautiful and you can find statues of Buddha. You can also make your Goshuin for 500 yen.

It is an amazing place to feel the spirit and history of ancient times. The temple and the surrounding buildings are of a grandeur scale. There is a sense of serenity. We walked up from Nagoya Station in what was a very flat sand easy walk. Lots of souvenir shops, coffee shops, and restaurants on the way up to the temple.We got there around 3:30 in the afternoon, and there were very few signs of crowds. There was lots of information about Zenko-ji on display for those curious. Lots and lots of photo opportunities. Definitely put it on your must do list if in or near Nagano. Was lucky enough to head back there a few days later but went at about 6 pm. Totally different vibe at night and lovely picture opportunities. Very few people, just a few locals walking through the grounds. Zenkoji is well lit up, as are the gates. If you have tome, a night walk up there is recommended.

We loved this place. It payed by itself the travel to Japan. Nagano is a beautiful town, completely different to Tokyo. Architecture is amazing and whole vibe. Zeko-ji it's a complete town itself, surrounded by several other minor temples, gardens and amazing landscapes. There're options to stay in small temples and houses around the temple and live the spiritual lifestyle, that has to be an unforgettable experience. Woodwork, wood sculptures are like nothing you've seen before. The giant warriors keeping the gigantic gates seems like they're alive. A must visit in Japan, don't miss this place and please reserve at least half day in the area. If you're ok with walking, it is just 30 mins from Nagano Station in a straight direction to the temple. The avenue is packed with nice design stores and astonishing design houses.

Came during early Jan 2024 and it was worth the walk. There is no busses going up during winter season and they only stop at Chusha (the middle shrine). So you gotta walk from there. Tall cedar trees are magnificent. I will be back for the summer/autumn season to climb up to the main shrine.

It was an incredible experience that left a lasting impression. The serene and sacred atmosphere of the shrine, nestled in the beautiful Nagano region, made it a truly memorable visit.

This is one of my favorite shrines to visit in the winter. The beautiful, fragrant cedar trees are insanely tall. My only regret is that it was not actively snowing when we came! I’d highly recommend snowshoes if you’re hiking in the winter. We saw lots of people sliding and falling, so you should come prepared for the snow so you will not get hurt!

Beautiful in summer due to the green roof and the starting point of the 200+ cedars that line both sides of the walkway which goes back to 800+ years. Highly recommended to spend some time here before movin on, instead of walking pass this gate (which is actually the main shrine).

The shrine is located about an hour by bus from Nagano city, followed by another hour hike from the Middle Shrine (Chuusha) to the main shrine. The path is relatively flat until the end and lined by thousand year old cedar trees making it quite the surreal experience.

I love Togakushi Shrine in summer and autumn season but winter also has its special charm. You need to have a snow shoes and better with a stick so you can walk the way to the end of Okusha. We were told not to go because of God was move to the car park to away from the heavy snow. The whole journey took us around 2 hours. Then had the famous Togakushi soba. Highly recommended .

This is a major attraction in Nagano. To reach the Togakushi Jinga, you need to take a 1 hour bus ride. There are many shrines in this area, but during heavy snow days some places are not accessible.

The shrine is so beautiful, as expected from a Japanese shrine. It is surrounded by cedar trees that are definitely older than us. I recommend bringing friends when coming here, especially in winter, cuz some places may be challenging. The only minus is the toilet. It's not as clean as other Japanese toilets.

Direct bus from Nagano Station, numbers 70 and 73 will get you there. Then it's a hike up to the shrines and the giant Cedar tree forest pathway. The hike was done in snow today, and while most of it is relatively flat, parts are quite icy and slippery. Despite this, it was definitely worth the effort. Majestic and awe-inspiring are two phrases i have to use to describe the experience. Wonderful photo opportunities. Walking back from the giant cedar trees, there is a lovely Soba restaurant, and the meals really warmed the body on a snowy day. Wear appropriate warm clothes, however you can hire boots at the tourist information centre where the bus drops you off. Great cafe around the corner of the ingo center called Lamp Cafe, run by a fantastic old fellow who makes fantastic coffee and has a wide range of snacks. The loop bus leaves from opposite the Nagano Station at bus stop 7. You can buy the round ticket at the bus stop. Well worth the effort going to the shrines and cedar forest pathway.

Majestic experience if you get to hike among all 5 shrines. Direct bus loop departing from Nagano Station. About an hour ride up to the mountain, and about 2-3 hours walk for the while hiking trip. Visited during winter with heavy snow. Beware of the slippery ice, and be equipped with boots. The final segment with the trees may be closed during snow melting season. Be sure to double check with local before you go.

It’s a very winding road going up the mountain to the shrines. They have five shrines to visit but was only able to visit the middle shrine (3rd) on this trip. The 3rd shrine has some very old cedar trees and a waterfall in the back area. It is very much a power spot! I will definitely be back to visit the rest of the shrines.

Gorgeous in the snowy seasons, but be advised - when it's snowy everything is CLOSED, i.e. nothing around the area is open except the vending machines! No Ninja Museum, no soba noodle restaurants, nothing! Google Maps is inaccurate during the snowy season! Definitely worth a hike, just make sure to prepare for knee-deep snow and go early as the last bus is at ~5pm.

Important place for Japanese people. For tourist, the way to the shrine is beautiful with very tall trees. The shrine at the end of the road is not very beautiful but it old and sacred. Near this sacred place, there are a lot of different temple linked to the same religion with trees as old as 800 years!

One of my favorite views in all of Japan. It’s difficult to come here when there are no clouds, but it’s a unforgettable view. You can eat some great Soba crepes here as well!

Very beautiful place to go for a short hike. During late afternoon the light is great to enjoy the breathtaking landscape around it and take some beautiful photos. The hiking trail to get there is easy and with signs along the way to show the right path. It is also easy to go by car and there is a nice cafe near the lake. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Nagano.

Cold but nice walk on the drive to Niigata

Matsushiro Castle has beautiful colors in the fall. The main gate is well preserved and eye catching. The grounds are small but quaint and the bridge to the castle is very pretty.

Although it is a small castle, there is a lot to see. It's very moving to think that people in the past fought in places like this.

Historic castle with very good restoration & protection

It was named Kaizu Castle, and famous for its tactical importance in the 4th Battle of Kawanakajima. But the castle was rebuilt many times, and the current one was rebuilt in 2004. The old castle's defensive structure was rebuilt, although incomplete.

Did the permanent exhibition. My favourite was EXIT by Terry Bill. At the end of the exhibit there is a section that explains the art work. Shame it was the wrong way around. We went through in 15 minutes. There are more attendants than there were prices of art.

Okay, so admittedly, we didn’t actually go into any of the exhibits, but the space and the architecture were amazing! Loved the concrete and minimalist vibes, as well as the floor to ceiling glass windows and the recessed lighting. Vibe and lighting was immaculate, nice spaces indoors and outdoors, overall phenomenal space.

Nice art gallery. The entrance fee 700yen or 800yen or combo for 1300yen. Nice place where you can spend a few hours. There is also a small restaurant with a tasty ice cream.

Had lunch of local Nagano delicacies and bought some souvenirs on the way back. Pretty new and convenient location in the station itself. Much options for gifts, that I was spending too much time wondering what to get!

Midori mall conveniently connected to the Nagano train station is fairly large with a mix of different kinds of shops and restaurants. There is a grocery store on the lower floor, a few soba restaurants as well as other restaurants on the upper floor. The Oraho sweets and souvenirs section has all kind of yummy and desserts - my favorite is the 2 apple pies shops.

It’s a supermarket under Nagano stations with about 10 independent shop’s selling ready to eat food, food souvenirs and desserts. The supermarket itself has a lot of sushi, sashimi and fresh seafood. Not particularly enticing but they have unique products not found in other supermarkets.

Super convenient location as next to the train station. Fortunately I booked my hotel nearby and it was just a short walk away my hotel. Good place to eat and shop for food, beauty buys, and all around are more shopping places. Lots of choices for food and there's a very authentic soba place with great ambience.

Can't beat the location but i got the very worst customer service from various shops in THIS one single mall in Japan!! It was so bad that i went to even talk to the local tourism office there about them: 1. Floral shop clerk ignored me although i have waited over 5 mins patiently while she was just busy wrapping up flowers, 2. Grocery shop clerk basically threw 4 pairs of disposable chopsticks in my basket roughly as soon as i asked for a pair of chopsticks for my sashimi 3. Went to a western style restaurant for strawberry parfait but this is way too sweet that no normal person can finish it while I DID because I traveled alone & didn;t want to make a scene 4. cosmetic counter lady tried to scam me by putting a product i didn't want to buy and pretend it was the one i wanted in the tax free sealed bag (both are same price). I bought products from this same lady 3 times in the last 18 months!! When she was caught she pretended it was a mistake and kept asking me to keep the wrong item because it is already paid and in sealed bag!! If you were solo tourist, I highly suggest to stay away from this mall especially any shops selling food, grocery and makeup/skincare !!

There is a monument at the entrance dedicated for world peace and sworn to never again starting such a war. Not all the tunnels are open to the public. I can imagine the official will eventually open more sections once they are deemed safe. At the time of writing, we were only allowed to explore about 500m into the tunnels. There aren't any exhibitions inside the tunnels, nor a dedicated building to explain the history. Great park , had a wonderful time with our kids 6&8. Many activities outside included in the basic entrance plus you can purchase a 6 ticket set for additional paid activities. I reconvene the ninja maze. The cafeteria also very nice. Spent there 4 hours and had a lot of fun.

This Kids Ninja Village is really trying hard to put on a good performance. My children 7 & 9 loved this place and it is especially good if travelling with children and they need to let off some energy. If you don’t do the paid activities (and even if you do) I would say this is good value for money. My children loved the obstacle course.

So much to do with just the entrance fee. Then you can pay per play for the special attractions, if you want to try out blow darts or ninja star throwing. Fun for the entire family!

The ninja house and maze are super fun. The climbing parcours were challenge. Of course the ninja burger couldn’t be missed :-).
