It was beautifully maintained and there were people eating their lunches leisurely.

The shrine itself isn't anything special to look at, but it has a fascinating history. It has a great playground for toddlers on its grounds. The playground is officially under the management of Hatsukari Park (please see Hatsukari Park for more information).
The long path leading to the shrine with torii and the cherry blossoms in spring add to the beauty of the temple. The temple is dedicated to the brain.

Miyoshino Shrine is quite historic and thus interesting in that regard. The architecture is also quite beautiful in my option. When I last visited it though, it was in need of a bit of repair. There's nothing special about the grounds themselves, but if you're a Japanese history-buff, it's worth seeing after you've visited the other shrines in Kawagoe.

Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, originally built in 1457, is a historic structure located in Kawagoe City. It was the former residence of feudal lords and features a garden, tatami rooms, and life-size costumed figures. The palace was constructed to oppose the Ashikaga clan under the order of Uesugi Mochitomo.

Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿) is the only surviving palace building of Kawagoe Castle which was originally built in 1457 under the direction of Ieyasu Tokugawa, Japan's Shogun at that time. Due to Kawagoe's importance as a trade city and a strategic point of defense north of the capital, throughout the Edo Period, 21 lords, all closely allied with the Tokugawa Shogunate resided at Kawagoe Castle. The palace building lies adjacent to the Kawagoe City Museum, a small but informative place to discover lots of interesting facts about 'Ko Edo' (Little Edo). Parking is available in front of the Museum (other side of the street) and you can get a stamp for free parking if you enter the museum. For less than $5 you can get a combined ticket for the museum and the palace. The warehouse district is just a 15min walk from the museum so I left the car parked visited the museum, palace, and warehouse district in about three hours - well worth a visit!

Well worth the extremely reasonable admission price and even more worth it when paired with a visit to the Kawagoe City Museum across the street. I suggest visiting the museum first and then visiting the palace. There is a beautiful garden that can be viewed from the windows of the palace and makes for some gorgeous photos especially for those who are renting kimono.
My husband and I weren’t sure of what to expect when we chose to visit on a whim and were pleasantly surprised to find out that they have package pricing to visit both the castle and the two museums across the street which are a perfectly complimentary trifecta. The staff were very helpful and friendly despite us being beginners in the language. We spent around half an hour walking around the mostly empty palace and admiring the architecture which we felt was plenty of time for a thorough visit.
Please be aware that outdoor shoes are not allowed and must be removed prior to entering. We also found the COVID protocols to be satisfactory with plenty of sanitiser available, masks and temperature check required and most windows being open with resulted in ample ventilation.

If you are in the area, you should visit the place. Entrance is 100円(yen) so it's not gonna kill you to support it. It will give you a slight overview of how shoguns in Edo period lived. There's also an English info leaflet for those who need it :) the leaflet includes story about the place and who used rooms in the residence.

Forest Adventure Park Ohira was one of the highlights to my trip to Japan. I went to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto and it was very disappointing and highly overrated. Come here! The bamboo here is thick and you actually get to climb up trees to see the bamboo and touch it. They do thin out the bamboo where you actually walk and need to zipline. And... you get to zipline and do a whole bunch of fun challenging exercises. Make sure you bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty or possibly ripped. The staff said this is the only adventure park out of the 25 in Japan that has bamboo. Many parts of the course had English instructions. There are restrooms, small lockers and areas to have a bbq. The course took about 1.5 hrs and it was super fun! My wife and I came on a Monday and we were the only customers. We just took our time. Cost was 3500 Yen per adult and 2500 Yen for under 18 years old.
The staff here is wonderful and very safety conscious. They have very limited English speaking skills but they will work with you. We had a good conversation with them after we finished our course.
You can get here by either the Shin-Ohirashita Station (Private -Tobu Nikko Line) or Ohirashita Station (JR - Ryomo Line). We walked from the Shin-Ohirashita Station and it took 45 minutes. It was pretty neat to see the grape vines and country houses. Be careful as you walk the narrow roads. You can also take a taxi which can cost 1450-2000 Yen depending on which station you depart. You'll see their signs as you progress up the hill. They have plenty of parking too. I hope more people come here, it is really worth the trip and then you can take the Ryomo Line to Ashikaga Flower Park on the same day.
You can make online reservations to any of their parks throughout Japan online. You don't have to make reservations but they told me they get booked on the weekends. As many as 200 people will come on a Saturday or Sunday. Make sure you arrive early as they start on time. Enjoy!
Nick Y — Google review
We went there in January, still quite warm and very few other customers. Which is lucky since the heights and sometimes scary passages can make kids (and grownups) take it slow. The safety instructions are quite throrough and well conducted. The instructors are well trained, concerned and polite.
Walking with the zipline is quite a bit of excercise but the sliding is the reward, although you have to land carefully.
The parking can be a bit tricky as there are several parking lots, and the entrance can be very hard to find. And it is slighly expensive, but on the whole worth it.

I arrived after 12:00 and went straight to the reception desk, and it cost 3,800 yen per person.Pet bottle holders were available for free in Chichibu, but in Ohira they cost 100 yen, so if you have your own, I think it would be better to bring them. After watching the advance video and experiencing the experience, it was time to start the adventure course. There is also an easier canopy course, so choose your favorite course. Since I have experience in Chichibu, it went smoothly and was thrilling, as well as having fun elements such as the zipline and skateboarding that are not available in Chichibu. Since it was that time of year, the mosquitoes were really bad, so it's a good idea to bring bug spray. Also, it is essential that you don't drink water, as you will dehydrate yourself, but the plastic bottle holder can often get caught on nets and other objects, so we recommend that you proceed without haste. It is easier to cross the suspension rings using a zipline method. Well, even a 51-year-old man who weighs 85 kg can clear it, so you can enjoy it. There is also a children's corner and barbecue facilities, so the whole family can enjoy it. The summer heat will make you sweat, but as you head south on the Budou Kaido road, there is a facility called Yurakukan on the right where you can take a bath for as cheap as 310 yen for adults. The park boasts an impressive kids' zoo and botanical garden, as well as sports facilities, fishing spots and camping areas. Nice place for the kids, but could use a lot of refurbishment...especially the animal areas. Really run-down, weedy in some places. Admission is very reasonable, and the setting is nice. Nearest station would be Saiyama-shi, on the Seibu Shinjuku Line...from there, you should take a bus. Didn't see any place to eat, unless you bring a lunch. They had many instagrammable photo areas and for some reason another photo theme was Winnie the Pooh and they had many areas set up for photos.
As with all premium outlets in Japan it's nothing compared to prices of outlets in North America. It's a lot smaller than the outlet in Gotemba or Karuizawa... But it's much more accessible because it's not too big and it's far less crowded which makes it all more pleasant.
I think outlet malls are a little bit cheaper this year maybe due to Corona and sluggish moving inventory. Most shops had additional 20 to 30% on top of the already reduced prices.
On a hot summer day it's really not recommended because there's not much refuge from the humidity and heat. It's a very dog friendly place and many owners had brought their pets.
The cosmetics shop was really crowded! Lots of discounted Clinique items. MAC eyeshadows that go for over 3000yen retail outside were selling for about 1000yen. A must stop for cosmetics-lovers.

Tokyo Summerland is a popular amusement park in Akiruno-city, Tokyo, accessible via the JR or Keio Rail Line. It boasts both indoor and outdoor water parks, including the renowned "Adventure Lagoon" open only during summer and the year-round Adventure Dome. The park offers a wide range of attractions such as large water slides, inner tubing flumes, and various water activities.
Tokyo Summerland is an amazing spot to spend the day with family and friends in a water park experience that only Japan can provide. We started off in the nearby parking lot and took a shuttle bus to the Summerland main park. It's safer to buy your tickets in advance. Advance ticket sales open up 7 days prior and can be bought through the Tokyo Summerland website.
We scanned our QR codes and although the website said they would check the contents of our bags, scan us for tattoos, and no personal carts, tents, etc., our bags were not checked, they didn't make us roll up our sleeves or undress looking for tattoos, and everyone else in the park had coolers, carts, and tents.
There is an indoor and an outdoor section, and although the indoor portion is protected from the sun, it has a greenhouse effect and keeps the area pretty hot...uncomfortable enough to make you want to go outside. All over the park there are sectioned off spots that are marked on the corners where people can put a tent or a towel down and claim a little territory. They are first come first serve, so it's best to come early and establish your little plot of the park.
There are also VIP seating places where you get a little table, four chairs, and an umbrella. They're usually on elevated wooden platforms and a little segregated from the rest of the crowd. They're a little pricey but if you're with a bunch of adults it could be worth it for you! It was 7100 yen for an average spot and you get to use it for the rest of the day. You can reserve one of these spots at any Information Booth at the park.
The lazy river is impressively long and a great way to navigate around the park. You can leave your shoes pretty much anywhere in the park and no one will take your shoes (only in Japan!). There are water slides, playgrounds, obstacle courses, random hoses and spouts, water everywhere!
Definitely ride the Dekasla, even if you have to wait an hour.
They have food stands available and they sell beer as well. Prices are marked up due to amusement park/water park demand.
Don't forget to reapply sunscreen!

A huge water park nestled at the western area of Tokyo. Went there with my family and a group of friends. Based on my experience, I highly reccomend to rent a car rather than using public transportation because it is quite far; bring a lot of snacks, meals and drinks; and it is better to arrive at the venue right before the opening time to avoid congestion at the entrance gate. We went there during public holiday so the traffic was very crowded and it was full house as all the tickets were sold out.

Tokyo Summerland is a sprawling water park in the Tama area of Tokyo. It's fun for kids of all ages and a great place to cool down during the Tokyo summer heat.
The park has several large pools, waterslides, pools for small children, warm water spas, rides for kids, and a Ferris wheel. The main outdoor pool is massive and features a 650-meter long lazy river. The park's outdoor waterslide has a 40-meter free fall. The large indoor pool has a tropical theme and is kept at 30 degrees Celsius so visitors can enjoy it all year round.
Tokyo Summerland does not allow visitors with tattoos, and it's advisable to visit on weekdays or off-season, as it can be quite crowded in summer.

Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended. I did have a tattoo, but kept it covered. We started off with some cold beer, served by girls in the Boy Scout of America. Had we known beer was available elsewhere we would not have waited. There is food and beer all over the park and if you have your phone you can use that to pay.
Like most everywhere in Japan I felt comfortable leaving my valuables is a shaded rest area. Which there are many places to do so. BRING YOUR OWN thing to float on. The lines for things were fairly long. My group and I misunderstood the sign at Dekasla. You can pay ¥1,000 to reserve a spot, which I highly recommend. I did not and missed out on riding other rides. If your in a group though, you can send people to go get food, drinks and bathroom breaks. So perhaps time it around a lunch break.
Let me tell you about the water. I grew up swimming, I’ve been a lifeguard at everything from a city pool, extreme water rides and even in the Atlantic Ocean. I say this to say, I’ve been in a lot of pools and water parks.
The chemical level was spot on and my skin felt amazing. My guess is a bromine salt. My eyes did not hurt even after several underwater searches for dropped items. The temperature was great to, not to warm or to cold.
The outdoor hot tub, could have been warmer. Since it was so hot, no one in my group ventured inside.
When it was time to eat, there where plenty of food options.

Nice waterpark. My daughter loved it. Plenty of kiddy pools and the water for the indoor pools were warm and perfect for my 1 yr old kid. Absolutely no tattoo and You have to purchase tickets in advanced.

Fun for all! We went on May 14, 2023. It is the opening of the summer season. Entry fee is ¥2600 for adults during May. There are three parts:
1. Adventure Dome (Indore pool with waves, slides and hot jacuzzi. The front part of the pool is 1.4m deep so good for swimming. Wave time is hourly and it was quite fun. The slides are also good. Many people brought leisure sheets and sat around the pool like being on the beach. Temperature is kept hot here. So even in May it does not feel cold to be on water for long time. The Jacuzzis are great)
2. Adventure Lagoon (Outdoor Pool and slides. This place was cold under rain. But there was a big hot bath which was very calming.)
3. Thrill Mountain Amusement Park (Ferries wheel, Dekasla, and others. Most rides are for kids but we had a fun time riding these. Super Bounty was quite scary! And the Dekasla was the best part!)
End note: Most rides are for kids and not much thrilling for adults but I must say it is quite fun and relaxing! I didn’t want to ride Dekasla since its very high. But I did and it was so fun and not that scary. We brought our own food and had a little picnic. Please not that water floats and rings are not available here and you need to bring your own. There are shops but price seemed higher than usual. They have free pump station for water floats.

It's ok, at best. For any foreigners to Japan, THEY WILL NOT ALLOW YOU IN WITH TATTOOS. They need to have that written clearly in all langages BEFORE you purchase tickets. For the lazy river, you have to bring your own flotation device because the park only supplies about 10 of them, and they are always taken. The regular amusement rides are for kids, adults can ride them, but they aren't very exciting. The big ferris wheel was closed. The womens changing room was just a tiny space, and the curtains would open when the wind blew. It was nice to cool down on a hot day, but thankfully, we'll just do that in the outdoor pool on base and save our money.

The experience was great. Though we went there at a time when a few rides/slides were not available but yet it was worth visiting. A few items that I have to specially mention and recommend are-
1. DeCasla- we were frieghtened and thought a lot before riding it because we were not very fond of heights and gravitation. But once we took the chance, we so much enjoyed it that we instantly went for another round.
2. The wave- its very enjoyable for people of all age. The wave is initiated every hour once
3. Jakuji/hot spring- There are two hot springs, one inside the indoor area, another in the outdoor area. At first it feels very warm but once you get habituated, it relaxes you like nothing else.

Got the summer land and keio train day pass.
Went with my two children.
Loved the place. It was a little crowded but tolerable. We’ve been twice this season. Once during the week and once at the weekend. The weekend was far more crowded (as you’d expect) the only thing that really changed was that the wave pool was DANGEROUS at the weekend due to the sheer numbers of people in it.
The lazy moving pool and mini kids area are great fun.
The long Slides are a little slow.
The staff are really friendly and having stations to put air in your inflatables for free is a great convenience.
There’s also a small, old fairground attached with a pirate ship and a few small rides which was a great way to end the day.
Would definitely recommend it and we will be visiting again next year.

Kodai Hasu No Sato, also known as Ancient Lotuses Park, is a green space that showcases seasonal cherry and lotus blossoms, as well as rice-paddy and straw art. The peak season for the lotus flowers and art is at the end of July, but visitors can still enjoy the impressive scale of the rice art at other times. The park also features a Lotus Museum with interesting information about these beautiful plants.

The best time to watch lotuses is early July at 6-8 am. Lotus blooms only until 10 am! After 10 am the lotus is closed. The lotus blooms for only 4 days, on the first morning it opens halfway, on the second morning completely, on the third it begins to crumble, on the fourth it crumbles.

Went yesterday (7/9) and the lotus were full-bloomed. But you should get there in the morning when there will be more bloomed petals, apparently they tend to close the petals after noon.

Rice field art is becoming established as a new tradition that colors the rice fields in Gyoda, the rice-producing region.
Express pictures and letters on paddy fields using colorful rice plants.
Boasting a size of about 2.8 hectares, it was certified as the “World’s Largest Rice Field Art” by the Guinness World Records in 2015.
This rice paddy art will be planted in mid-June and harvested in mid-October.
The best time to see it is from mid-July to mid-October, from the adjacent Ancient Lotus Hall Observatory.
When you visit Gyoda, please stop by and enjoy the magnificent scale of art.

After excavation and conducting research, the Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds Museum was established in 1969 to preserve nine of the kofun at this site as a public park.

Oshi Castle, a reconstructed fortress and clan stronghold in Saitama, offers exhibitions on the local history and Samurai. While most of the complex is not original, the castle building itself still stands strong. Visitors can enjoy the well-maintained grounds with multiple seating areas for taking in scenic views, free of charge. However, entrance to the on-site museum building requires a fee of 200.

The castle grounds and the surrounding areas are free to tour and walk around. They are well kept, have some aesthetic areas for photos and some seating areas to enjoy the peaceful nature of this place. Dogs are also welcomed.
Attached to the main castle grounds area is a museum but that does have an entry fee and as I am not wanting to spend much I chose not to go.

Oshi Castle was built by Narita’s family in the 15th century. The history was made into a novel “Nobou no Shiro” and then a movie with the same title. Sometimes on Sundays you can watch a samurai performance. In November there is a samurai procession and gun shooting performance.

I had to wait for my dad while he was renewing his drivers license so I was looking for places I can go with my dog. The castle is very well taken care of and there's also an art gallery right across Oshi Castle. If you're a fan of Japanese history, I recommend reading about Oshi castle before going.

Maybe the only "Japanese castle like" thing in Saitama. This is actually the reconstruction of the former Oshi Castle, so do not expect a wooden inside with steep ladders like other ancient castles.
Anyway, visiting it you can learn about the history of the area, its samurai clans and the commerce that was once held in Gyōda. Nice to learn some local history.
Nestled approximately 74 kilometers north of Tokyo, Ashikaga Flower Park is a renowned 23-acre floral paradise that first opened its doors in 1968. The park boasts an impressive collection of seasonal thematic displays, including the famous 150-year-old wisteria tree designated as a national monument.
Definitely a must visit in the winter time if in the area. Great for dates or even a trip with a group of friends.
First off, the entry fee was super cheap given how huge the park is. We got there thinking we'd be done in an hour or two to find out that we didn't have enough time to see the entire park.
Second, the lights are stunning. I thought it was really clever how they replaced the original wisterias with light versions and loved how they moved the lights to different sequences in a TeamLab like fashion. There were so many lights that were all different throughout the park that made us want to stay and stare for a long time because of how dynamic they were.
Finally, the food was good! They had many options and had a beef stew that they call their specialty.
Will definitely come by every time I'm in this area now

I wish I could give more than 5 ⭐️ to this amazingly beautiful and unique place, which is truly a depiction of a garden from the heavens on earth. You must have never seen such a variety of flowers in bulk - overloaded & flowing, at a single venue. Very aesthetically designed and managed flower park in Tochigi, less than 2 hours drive from Tokyo (also having a train access), Ashikaga is very rightly placed on the list of dream destinations. Ticket price varied between ¥1-2k depending on the season of flowers. You can easily spend the whole day and evening here. There are a lot of options to just sit, relax and watch the amazing beauty of nature translates through flowers, flowers & flowers.

I was very lucky I visited this park when it was sunny day, not raining at all (it was rainy season). Apparently there is a souvenir shop that selling flowers too, they are available in a little pot or even seed if you want to plant it yourself.
There is also a restaurant that is selling a limited time Wisteria themed ice cream, they said it's a combination of vanilla and Wisteria flower.

An absolute must visit for anyone who likes flowers. This is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to - I’ve been twice during wisteria season and I can’t give a high enough rating. We spent hours here, especially browsing the plant shop while waiting for the sun to set to see the illuminations at night. The wisteria ice cream is delicious and the selection of flowers besides just wisteria was a nice touch.

BEAUTIFUL!! This festival was extremely tidy and cared for- not to mention how amazing it smelled while strolling through. The ice cream was delicious, I had a hard time choosing between that and the iced drink! They also had other snacks available for purchase with several seating areas to catch a break and fuel up. There was plenty of space and scenes to walk through that each felt magical. The Wisteria trees themselves were very impressive creating multiple canopies around the flower park.
It was pretty busy, but enough to still enjoy it.
Alayna Johnston — Google review
What an amazing experience! One of my favorite in Japan so far. I agree with all the other reviews calling this place magical. We visited in late April, which was good because this year the wisteria bloomed earlier than ever in the park's history. I wish we had more than 2 hours to fully enjoy the illumination and flowers. The smell was quite strong. Though I enjoyed it, people with allergies might be affected.
We appreciated the care that went into the entire garden. Not just the "main" flowers, but all the plants and flowers surrounding them. Clearly a lot of work goes into creating a beautiful experience. We tried to balance taking photos and just enjoying with our eyes. The different colors, types, and size of the wisteria was quite impressive.
Obviously it will be very crowded during peak season, so I recommend going in at opening or staying until closing if you want to get shots with less people in them. They have at least one spot where you can line up to have your photo taken by a photographer with a nice camera and they will also take a photo on one device you give them (phone, camera, GoPro, etc.). When we visited, it was just behind the restaurant/café in the middle of the park. If you like their photo, you can purchase it in a commemorative frame/stand, but it unfortunately does not include the data for the photo like some other parks do.
The price varies depending on bloom status, so since we visited during full bloom the price was 1900 yen per person for the night ticket. The night and day tickets are separate. I believe the peak day price is about 2100 yen. I'm sure both are beautiful, but I really enjoyed seeing them illuminated. During the wisteria season, there are extra parking lots available, just sometimes with more walking involved but I can't imagine them running out of parking spaces.

The park luminates at night with a lot of light shows. Even if there was no natural wisteria when I went during October there were tons of things that made it look similar and the place was interesting overall. It's a pretty awesome place to hike. Easy for beginners. You can take a bus right outside Mitake station, turn left, cross the road, and turn left. Or just ask the visitor centre and ask for a map.The bus is scheduled, so do take note of the time. Once you board the bus, it will take you all the way to near the cable car. You will need to walk uphill for 5 mins to reach the cable car station. Once there, I suggest you take note of the cable car timing to prepare the time to descent. After exiting the cable car station, you will need to walk for abt 10 min on a stretch of road to reach the town. To even reach the start of the walk to the shrine, you will need to cont uphill inside the town. Those who are planning for the Nanayo waterfall, you will need to go to near the shrine, and turn left, follow the sign board. Overall, you can walk 1 loop to the nanayo waterfall> rock garden> ayahiro fall> cedar trees> shrine. Spent a total of 2.5 hr or less for the route. Its steep initially will downhills and slopes then slippery rocks and icey pathways w snow, followed by gentle path back to the shrine.

You may either take the bus for a small amount or simply walk to the cable car. We decided to walk to enjoy the mountains, the beautiful dale and nature. Though the last part of the road is pretty steep and is kind of a cardio workout, it was really worth it.
We took the cable car up. Even there the view is awesome. At it's destination, you can walk up the remaining path to the summit. It's comfortable to walk and takes around 20 mins.
Along the way you find some restaurants and houses. The way to summit is marked by signs but you need to keep the Japanese Kanji in mind as it is not always written in English. Someone tried to be funny and added English descriptions to one sign, but exchanged two summit names.
The summit has a temple and therefore is different than e.g. Takao-san. The view is nice as well and shows mountains and the city area in the background.
We liked the hiking and the area a lot, because it is less crowdy than other spots. The valley is extremely beautiful and reminded us of a slightly bigger Japanese version of the Ahrtal (Ahr river valley) in Germany.

Easily accessible by train. Good for a day trip outing. Can take the Cable cart too. Need to walk a bit to reach the Nanayo waterfall. There is a place mentioned as Rock Garden but actually there is no specific Garden such as instead the route to Ayahiro waterfall is surrounded by rocks and the water stream in between that is the Rock Garden.

Mount Mitake is about an hours drive from Tokyo. It’s a beginner hiking mountain which takes about 4 - 5 hours to hike all the from the bottom to the summit whilst visiting all the major scenic spots. It’s a little harder to get to compared to all the other mountains which means there’s less people. The autumn leaves are quite nice and there are many of those kind of trees!
Ken Liew — Google review
Amazing walk, 800 trees ish for you to count with on your hike up the mountain! It would be best to go hi vis or wear a bell so that you may be safer on the road. It is a bitumen road shared with cars. The track is maybe an hour long up and half that on the way down. I would recommend skipping he cable car if fitness and time allows!
Mind you there are other beautiful hikes once you reach the summit also.
The cable car can be reached by a bus (¥210 one way) from the station (about 100m left of the train station exit as you leave)

View from the top is good but not spectacular. It's quite a drive from Tokyo (about 90 minutes) and there isn't much you can do here. Most of the restaurants are not opened and there is literally nothing to do except visiting the shrine and sovenirs shops. I can see why this place is good for hikers but if you are a casual traveller, might make sense to miss this altogether.
Joshua Ng — Google review
It was a good hiking experience after a long break. The trail is not hard at all, most beginners can easily hike the mountain. On top of the mountain there’s a shrine. If you are lucky or well informed you can catch festivals too. The scenario is so so.
Ashikaga School, notable for its ancient architecture and scenic surroundings, is recognized as Japan's oldest educational institution. The site not only houses temples but also shops, making it a popular destination for tourists. Visitors can partake in a Kanji test or take in the picturesque scenery to learn about Japan's rich history. It is believed to have been constructed during the Nara era, Heian era or Kamakura era; however, it was first officially recorded during the Muromachi era.
The oldest school in Japan. It was said that it was built in Nara era, Heian era, or Kamakura era. But first officially it was recorded in 1439 in Muromachi era.

I’ve got to admit that this buildings site, which had been the nationally highest educational institution in Japanese academia such as Confucian ethics and Kokugaku from medieval for a long time, is not that entertaining or many things fun to watch, but is pretty elegant and very educational sightseeing spot you should visit at least once.
I admire the local people who have cherished and been making great efforts to preserve not only solemn buildings and beautiful trees, but also the spirit and significance of the school’s existence.
I humbly sense that that is still making this place well worth visiting.

Great little museum! Not much in English, however if you know a bit of Japanese and can follow through context, I suggest the tour if it’s available! It’s a really cool place about one of the first schools in Japan that wasn’t based off of the European education model. Very interesting info

This place is the oldest school in Japan. The buildings are well maintained and are in good condition. You can explore inside, role play as a scholar and test your knowledge with Japanese characters by filling out the free test sheets provided in the classroom.

The first school in Japan. Not too far from Tokyo. Beautiful scenery and informative features in English to understand some parts of Japan's history.

An ancient school that has been changed into a museum. Worth the ¥420 for a ticket. The garden is quite a nice view. You also get to go inside the buildings and most of the signs have an English translation. Sadly the library doesn't come with English translations for the signs and it's not allowed to use a smartphone inside to translate them yourself.

This historical landmark provides a sense of Japanese education back in the day. A combination of religious & moral studies with writing skills was taught and shaped the minds of young Japanese children. A remarkable site to behold.

Incredible and silly. Traveling long distance to see Japanese heritage where no credit card from tourist is accepted. Can’t enter. Shame on you. This is unacceptable way of treating visitors !!!

The place has an appearance which invites visitors to sit down and study. But there are also fun things like the "Yuza-no-ki". For those who are familiar with the language, you can make a school kanji test.

Was trying to find the resident cat Hacchan but it was nowhere to be seen. It’s a little hard to appreciate the place without a guide- there’s not enough English signage/explanations within. Still, you can walk around and appreciate the architecture and artifacts. I’m usually very interested and can spend a long time at museums but I was pretty much done with this place in 30 mins.

It was amazing to visit Japan’s first school. We arrived before closing, so we were the only ones there. There was also a sighting of a fat cat named Hacchan. 🤍
Bannaji Temple, a Buddhist temple in Japan with a 10-acre site, was founded in the mid-12th century by Yoshiyasu Ashikaga. The temple features a unique walled and moated layout that reflects its warrior roots. In 1196, Banna, son of Yoshikane (founder of the Ashikaga clan), built a temple dedicated to Vairocana Buddha seeking divine protection.
The hotel where my family of five stayed for the night from December 23-24, 2019 was just next to it. When I opened the curtains in the morning, I got mesmerised by the temple and then I went inside to have a look. It was a very beautiful and peaceful place and I thought deeply about life there!
Peter Kam Fai Cheung — Google review
Bannaji Temple is a 4 hectare (10 acre) site that began life as the home of Yoshiyasu Ashikaga (1127-1157 A.D.), the founder of the Ashikaga clan, in the mid-12th century, the Muromachi era of Japanese history. These warrior roots are still evident today in its walled, moated, four-gated layout--a rarity for temples in Japan. A few decades later, in 1196, his son, Yoshikane (posthumous Buddhist name, Banna) seeking divine protection built a temple here dedicated to the Vairocana Buddha, which in 1234 became full-fledged temple housing priests, and the official temple of the Ashikagas.
It has a huge six-century old gingko tree.

This is definitely the place for you if you want to enjoy a piece of quiet. The place itself is really inspiring. With the ancient decoration and architectural style, you will feel like you just walk into another world. You entered exhausted and troubled, and you come out refreshed and spirit-lifted. The only thing is the location is totally 'out-of-reach' for normal travelers. Otherwise: totally recommended!!

Lovely quiet temple (on weekdays) with a small moat. There is a Japanese garden, playground, outside stage, small kiosks for grabbing some bites too.
You have to see the 550 years old ginko tree which is especially amazing in fall season. My kids LOVE feeding the birds and koi fish there. They sell rice puffs for koi and birds at the kiosks.

Hinohara Tokyo Citizens' Forest, located on Mt Mito, is a forest therapy destination that offers various hiking routes through tranquil mountain woods. Visitors can experience the Japanese concept of forest bathing by immersing themselves in nature and relieving stress while soaking in the soothing sights and sounds. The Waterfall Course is recommended for those who want to try forest bathing. The park features hiking trails ranging from 0.9 to 7.
A beautiful and interesting forest of mixed trees including old beech trees, which are rare for the Kanto area. Accessibility is a factor in how appealing it will be for foreign visitors. There's a special rapid train on the Chuo Line that runs directly to Musashi-Itsukaichi station on weekends and holidays. Otherwise, transfer is required. From there, there is limited bus service to the forest -- only three buses in the a.m. But they run multiple buses to accommodate all the hikers April to November, so you're generally able to sit for the rather long and winding -- though scenic -- one-hour and about 900 yen ride. All those hikers seem to disappear somehow, though -- the trails are only moderately busy on big holidays and autumn leaf season. There are easy one-hour hikes and longer 4-5 hour moderately strenuous ones requiring proper footwear. At 1500 meters, it's also cooler and more prone to rain than Tokyo proper. There is a visitor center and two places to get food -- mostly typical noodles and curry. With a waterfall, various wildflowers and birds, a few good views, and fresh air, it's a nice place to experience nature if you're willing to put in the effort.

Located near the end of twisty Okutama road, the place serves as a rest area. They have a few shops, bus stops so that you can take a bus home if you wreck your car or bike :-) There're a couple of other parking along the way, and they would give you much more beautiful mountain and lake views, but they're much smaller and not paved.

Lake Okutama is a picturesque man-made reservoir nestled amidst the stunning mountains and verdant forests of Chichibu Tama National Park, making it a popular day trip destination from Tokyo. The area offers various activities such as hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and an information center known as "Yama-no-Furusato Mura." Visitors can enjoy camping facilities, log cabins, BBQs, guided hiking tours, and workshops for crafting activities.
Definitely an must visit place if you are Japan. One of the beautiful places I visited. Prefered time to visit is autumn. You can get busses from Okutama station to Lake Okutama. The journey with mountains valleys and autumn colours will be amazing to see. Get down at the dam and spend sometime there. But the real view comes later take the bus from the dam again and get down at Ideno bus stop. This place seems like no where but if you walk a little 100m from the bus stop you can find a opening that will lead you down hill and directly to the bank of the lake. You can get the best view of Lake and the surrounding mountains from here. It was stony and dangerous but also exciting and thrilling.

Nice lake to walk about. However, you have to take note of the bus timing if you are travelling by bus. It is not that frequent. Overall, you can spend less than 1 hour here. I have included the bus timing
1. From okutama station.
2. From lake okutama.

I came here by bus from Okutama JR station. I stopped at Lake Okutama “奥多摩湖”. Firstly, I surprised about the big lake and it’s beautiful deep blue color. Then I climbed the observatory to see the whole scene of the Lake, the Ogouchi dam, the mountains. It was a bit scary to look down from the window but it was a great view.
There is a good atmosphere and a beautiful nature here. I was healed so much from my busy days.

I hiked up to the lake from Okutama station, took about 3 hours, then had lunch and a beer on the other side of the dam. The views were absolutely stunning!
I then ventured around the lake. My target was the pontoon bridge, which I reached after about 3 hours of walking. All flat, so not challenging, but I was already tired from the hike. I ran out of water about halfway through, and there was no opportunity to get some more, all of the taps along the way weren't fit for drinking. I think taking a 2 litre bottle should be enough for a hot day.
Last bus from near the temple is about 5:30 I think, so I was in a bit of a rush at the end, and unfortunately, I didn't get to explore the temple.
Still, keep an eye out for monkeys, the newborns can be spotted in late spring/early summer!

It's scary to think that with such facilities, even the house inside the former Shibusawa residence is free to tour. Android Eiichi Shibusawa has an hourly reservation system, and you will be asked if you want to make a reservation at the time of reception. If you want to make a reservation, take a ticket with a number written on it, wait in front of the lecture room on the second floor, and when the time comes, you will be guided. will be done. First, the moderator will explain the lecture and Professor Eiichi Shibusawa will have a brief exchange, and then the lecture will begin. The lecture time is less than 10 minutes. Taking photos or videos during lectures is prohibited. Photographs will be allowed after the lecture ends. The way the android speaks and moves feels a little robot-like. There is also an android of Eiichi Shibusawa in the house inside, but that one is newer so I felt it moved more like a human. By the way, Eiichi Shibusawa here is in his 70s, and Eiichi Shibusawa in Nakanoie is in his 80s. You can also enjoy the exhibition room on the first floor, and there is a huge statue of Eiichi Shibusawa at the back of the memorial hall. I think it will be crowded after the new 10,000 yen issuance, so we recommend visiting this time of year.

Chichibu, a city located northwest of Tokyo in Japan, offers a blend of cultural and natural attractions. The Chichibu Kannon Pilgrimage route winds through 34 temples nestled in the surrounding mountains, including the impressive Kinshoji Temple with its numerous Buddha statues. Visitors can revel in the stunning fall foliage at Muse Park and vibrant spring blooms at Hitsujiyama Park. Additionally, the area is famous for its shiba-zakura festival showcasing pink mountain phlox.
Ashio Copper Mine, a historic landmark dating back to the 17th century, was once known as the copper capital of Japan and played a crucial role in supplying copper for various constructions and manufacturing coins. The mine ceased operations in 1973 but has since reopened a section for public tours. Visitors can experience the harsh working conditions of miners by riding a trolley into the 700-meter-deep tunnel.
After learning about the history of the mines and city I was very interested in going. The ride into the mines is short but great! I loved looking around inside the parts of the mine we could visit. And on the way out there were some cool things to see as well as a building that shows the history of Ashio and copper coin production.
There was some information in English, but you definitely miss out on a lot if you don’t know Japanese.
Overall, I loved it!

You will be able to enter a real mine. They also have a lot of interesting stuff.

It's a wonderful example of life in the area up to 1973 when the copper mine closed. A small train will take you into the mine and from there you'll work your way back to the surface passing examples of how work was done. It's quite wet so don't wear anything too light, it's pretty cool down there too but the temperature stays the same. There's a really nice set of museum exhibits once out and the souvenir shop has thousands of things to choose from and reasonably priced. I'll probably come again.

Since the first copper was discovered in Bizendateyama in 1610 (Keicho 15th year), it has prospered as a copper mine directly managed by the Edo Shogunate.
When it was privatized by Furukawa Ichibei in 1877 (Meiji 10), it rapidly developed with the latest technology and equipment, and grew into the best copper mine in Japan.
Currently, a part of the mine has been opened for sightseeing in Ashio Copper Mine, and its history and mechanism can be understood.

The lunch and bath set is a fantastic deal. For ¥1100 you get a nice Japanese set meal and access to the bath. Food was plentiful and tasty. The bath, while not huge, is quite nice: especially the outdoor area.
On Sundays, it seems the price goes up to ¥2100 for the buffet and bath set.

(Translated by Google) The customers are really terrible, but it's really good here.
I visited you for a day trip bath.
It was 500 yen and JAF, so 400 yen. reasonable.
There is freeWiFi, drinking water, but there is no such thing as a large break room, but there are chairs in the lobby, outside, and in front of the bath entrance, so you can take a break or wait for people.
Dryness is weak, but laundry is also reasonably priced
Hair dryer available, shampoo conditioner body soap available
There is a small sauna, a cold bath, a bath, an open-air bath, and a space to rest outside.
The staff was also very kind and polite.
However, I don't really care because I'm a double-washer, but there are a lot of stains on it ...
I entered while scraping myself.
The cause was the system and the customer base here.
It seems that it is not a way to make the circulation overflow, so I wonder if the dust on the surface does not flow though it is circulating.
It is the customer that is fatal afterwards.
Even though it was written firmly at the entrance of the bathroom (please wash your body before entering), only 1 out of 14 people washed it.
All the customers are about the age of uncle to grandfather.
You can enter without a hot water. Hot water is also served. A water bath without sweating in the sauna. Put the towel in the water bath & bathtub, squeeze it. Wash your body while standing. Go out without wiping your body ...
It's a good facility, so it's too wasteful ...
When I was chartered twice, I was very comfortable, so I will give it 5 stars. I think that it is the most cost-effective place if you pay attention to each other.
After that, I couldn't eat it, but I would like to try it this time for a Sunday-only lunch buffet.

Nagatoro Iwadatami is a picturesque location situated in the mountains of Saitama Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. The area has been designated as a prefecture nature park and preserve, featuring a forested river canyon that is lined by layered rock formations. Visitors can enjoy wooden-boat cruises along the river, as well as rafting and hiking activities. This stunning natural spot is best visited during spring or summer, but not recommended during winters.
Saitama is quite far, but definitely a unique experience! Its beauty and simplicity makes the place even better. It’s also a great place for adventure, as there are many different things to explore.

A very nice and peaceful place, suitable for family outings in Saitama. In addition, there are many services there such as boating, kayaking, etc. The food in that area seems to be famous for Soba because there are quite a few Soba shops nearby. The most beautiful season is Spring and Fall so make sure you come here around that time.

A breathtaking river boat ride that lasts about 20 minutes. It starts around the Nagatoro train station and drops you off about 100m away from the starting location. The ride itself has calm and turbulent portions. The scenery at the end of the boat ride is majestic.

Yuko Koda — Google review
It is an unusual terrain with a series of huge rock formations. There are many people near the boat pier, but as you move away from that area, the number of people decreases. It is a very relaxing place rich in nature. The kids enjoyed their rocky adventure. We can find many tadpoles and frogs here. The view of the boats on the river is also beautiful. The boats are very popular and you may have to wait in line for quite a while to get tickets.

Beautiful place to enjoy the nature. But not really recommended to visit in winters (of course you can just mark it off on the checklist). Preferably go in spring/summer. DON'T do the boat ride. It's so useless. 1000 yen for a 20 minutes ride. They may shorten the ride according to them but will not change the price. NOT WORTH. Other than that, great place to enjoy nature and good food.

Tomihiro Art Museum is a modern art gallery that showcases the works of Tomihiro Hoshino, a renowned paraplegic artist who creates beautiful paintings and writes poetry using his mouth as a brush. The museum boasts visually impressive sculptures that complement the artwork on display, along with serene sculpture gardens and lakeside hikes for visitors to enjoy. The Hodosan Shrine is located at the base of Mount Hodo and features ornate carvings. Visitors can take a nearby ropeway to reach the summit. The shrine is well-cared for, clean, and adorned with colorful charms and goshuin books. Another top shrine visited in Japan, that although it is in popular Nagatoro near tourtisty Chichibu, it felt empty. The setting of it being at the beggining of a hill but in the middle of the woods made it feel very special. It is also very well taken for.

Hodosan shrine enshrines the Emperor Jimmu who founded Japan. I instantly felt an atmosphere, enhanced by the shinto music playing on the grounds, as we approached the torii of the shrine.
The benevolence of the shrine is believed to be protection from disasters. It is a common place for hikers to pay homage as one of the three Kami (Gods / Deity) enshrined here is a mountain deity. But it is also because the shrine has a sub branch at the top of Mt Hodo - hikers pray at the base shrine and then climb to the top of Mt Hodo and devote there too.
The architecture of the almost 2000 year old shrine is magnificent. The various auxiliary shrines are impressive too. And the grounds are beautiful. It is easily accessible by public transport too, as you can walk up from Nagatoro station in about 10 to 15 minutes.

A colorful shrine, mountain hiking, richly flavored mushroom soup (at the entrance to the cable car), and a cable car ride to the top to see the plum blossoms.
This early in the season (end of February) it’s mainly the yellow plum blossoms, but by mid-March the pink, red, and white blossoms should be in full bloom.
Have a bowl of fresh mushroom soup before riding the cable car and if you’re still hungry there is charcoal roasted ayu (a river fish similar to trout). Or, wait till you get to the top of the mountain and have a bowl of soba, udon, or ramen.
Access by car (about 90 minutes north of Tokyo in Saitama Prefecture) or by train (free shuttle from the train station to the cable car base). Makes for a nice day trip, plenty of outdoor open space, and if you have youngsters they’ll enjoy the cable car ride).

Gunma Flower Park is a stunning floral paradise featuring dahlias, roses, and seasonal plum and cherry trees. Visitors can also participate in floral-themed workshops. Conveniently located near the train station, it provides easy access to public transportation and popular attractions such as Takasaki Castle and Haruna Shrine. However, visitors with pollen allergies should come prepared during spring when the park is at its most beautiful. Despite this concern, the park offers a nice place with very good views for all visitors to enjoy.

Luna Park is a large and colorful theme park that offers an array of vintage rides, such as a carousel and a kids' train. It has recently added new attractions, including a maze, which has retained its old-timey feel while still evolving to appeal to modern-day visitors. For only 400 Yen, there's an all-you-can-ride option that seems to be aimed at attracting people back after the COVID pandemic.
This is a fun and affordable way to spend the day with your 6 year old or younger. It cost only ¥200 per person. I believe the park cap for attendance is 530 people so I recommend arriving early or registering online early.
Anyway if you can’t do that stuff early then 3-4hrs after they open it is quite possible to get inside, just wait outside in line - most people leave early.

I'm giving this four stars not because it's a great amusement park, but because it's a fun place for young kids that costs less than lunch. It has a wonderful old timey feel to it. Even though most of the rides have a vintage quality, they have recently built a new maze. It was nice to see that they're adding new things to the park.
They also recently added a 400 Yen all you can ride option, although it's probably a special to get people to come back after COVID. Without eating anything the park is good for about 2 hours.
I'm glad to see that young children still enjoy amusement parks that would have entertained their grandparents as children.

luna park was good... the adults are free of fare for the simple reason that they are an accompany of the kids with which is the main target of the amusement center.
the rides were cheap, only ¥10 kids fare, adults no fare... it is a good place to kill time with your kids as they enjoyed the amusement rides.
what i didn't like was the mask regulation.
the amusement center is an open air park, and so, i think it unnecessary to put on the mask, besides, when i went here, there was no people other than me and my kids and the amusement park, and yet still, the staff had me to comply with their rules... i walked out, but leave the happenings of the center with my husband and kids... three hours later, when they returned to the car, everyone seems to have had a very good time.

Fukiware Falls is a picturesque waterfall measuring 7 meters high and 30 meters wide. It is accompanied by a suspension bridge that offers great views of the falls. The location charges Y1000 yen for parking, which can be used to purchase items from nearby shops such as apples or miso. There is also free parking available at the traffic light just south of the falls. This spot boasts breathtaking beauty throughout the year, with autumn being particularly impressive due to its vivid colors.
Easy walk and some nice views. Kids and older people should have no problem. Watch out for the bears!

Visited today. Was nice. Gentle flow of water falls down a steep gradient generating some cooling mist.

Nice walk around the impressive falls, rapids and whirlpools. The river has a strong current, and the geological formations were interesting to observe. There is a walking circuit, but it was partially closed, so we walked back and forth to the parking lot.
There are no rails, so be careful when walking as the water and mist can make the rocks slippery.

I went to here in the autumn
The path is very, very, very beautiful...
The scene of autumn green - yellow - red- orange leaves appear before your eyes

It was a nice experience
First place in Japan we see a water fall with such fast floating water and you get a chance to see flow very close.
And the mountain rocks give a feel like Aliens sculptures.
Recommend place to visit.

Beautiful and easy loop hike! There is a long path and a shorter path- both are relatively easy. We did the longer path and it took about 40 minutes (stopping to take pictures). There are some stairs going up and down- the paths are well maintained and easy going!

Great for a 1 day trip. Parking around the Fall is practically free. Fantastic scenery.
Sunken, striated falls and bottomless whirlpools...
The mysterious valley stone-basin is smooth and folded like worn, granite-hued bone.

First time experience with a fall which is eye level. easy to access. good parking spot. very big area. a lit of thing to explore. also saw monkey family. But it is suggested to be careful, specially with babies. It might be deadly if someone crosses some certain point. recommended to visit.

I stopped by this spot before going back to my home.
You can enjoy nice view with falls here. One or One and a half hour should be enough to walk around this area.
Better wear hiking shoes as the surface on walking pass is not paved, but rocky.

Unique waterfall to visit in Gunma. It's about a 1 km circular path to see the falls and hike. There are two suspension bridges along the path for a nice look over the river. Free parking and a couple of shops, by the entrance to the path, but nothing else in the area. Since it had rained the morning we visited, the path to see the falls up close was closed.

Be aware that you can’t get close in winter as they are closed for safety reasons. However if you are near by then you can look down from above and they are very spectacular.

It's really a nice place to walk in the nature. There is a shrine at the top of the cliff which you can access by the suspension bridge. There is no entry fee or anything. But for parking you need to pay or park it in any storefront parking area.

This place is absolutely beautiful and worth even a long drive to see it. You'll probably have to pay Y1000 yen for parking (that you can put towards the shops items like apples or miso etc). You can find free parking at the traffic light slightly south of the falls. This place is beautiful all year but I recommend autumn as the colours are just amazing. If you're interested in taking great photos, best to go really early in the morning because this place is a tourist attraction with lots of visitors.
Road Station Kawaba Denen Plaza is a convenient and peaceful rest stop along the toll road. It features a farmer's market, various dining options, a water element, and a bridge in tranquil surroundings. This location is especially ideal for families looking to grab lunch or spend half a day exploring. While most shops close by 5 PM, the ample parking and spacious seating area make it an enjoyable pit stop.
Pretty place! Nice to walk since sitrs are nice despite the cold weather. Locals sell their produce here too. And there are several food shops in case hungry.

Beautiful place to stop off at if you're passing through. Good place to buy souvenirs and have lunch. Very scenic with lots of free parking. You can even camp nearby. This place is surrounded by other cool places like Numata park, Bokyo Line, Tambara Lavandar park etc. The only problem with this place is that it's extremely crowded. They also have a pet dog named DEN who from what I can tell is caged up 24/7 and that made me sad.

Great view with lots of local goods. Will visit again if given a chance.

We stopped here for lunch. There was a lot of parking! Wonderful venue! Lots of choices! Dog friendly! We ate at the Noodle restaurant just inside the entrance by the pond. We sat facing the Pond and enjoyed buckwheat soba with vegetable tempura! Oishi!

A wide road side station with plenty of parking. If you like to buy local products, this is the place to stop by.

This is a very huge area with many kinds of shops and restaurants. Children can enjoy the outdoor playland too.

A great selection of restaurants to enjoy, combined with great produce shops make for a nice experience. Very crowded on weekends.

For being a cash-based society, you'd think they would provide an ATM. Why not provide a means for people to spend money? Not everyone in the world carries cash - especially while travelling.

Biggest and best roadside station I've ever been to (of about 50). Its more like a food theme park or resort than a roadside station. There are 7 car parks, several eateries, a farmers market, a rest area, outdoor and indoor seating, a nursery, toilets, smoking areas, and a brilliant free play area. Its a very popular spot particularly on weekends, so there are often queues.

Very nice spot to stop by especially for family and for lunch. Most of the shops there closes by 17:00, so not a good dinner stop. Though they have large parking, large sitting area with multiple different restaurants and shops. They even got a pond and kids playground. You can easily spend half day there. Really quick drive from Numata town. If you are near by or looking for a cool family camp area then I recommend to stop by this place.

A laidback and beautiful rest stop which many locals stop by. Has an infrequent shuttle bus directly from Numata (沼田) station for visitors who don't drive. You won't go hungry here as there are many shops selling really tasty food. Has a decent official website to introduce all the food you should try there. Strongly recommend trying to local made yoghurt from the milk factory and the sanzoku-sho set (山賊焼) from the meat factory.
Stamp collectors can get a unique stamp from the visitors' center. Manhole hunters will be pleased to find a cover with a design for Kawaba region near the bus stop.
Visited in Jan 2020.
