Night colors are magical, has Michael Jackson's thriller vibes. The rising steam and emerald waters are pleasant to watch. Nearby foot baths are nice too.

We came on a Tuesday 11am, but they closed for some unknown reason so we were a bit bummed out, but the scenery + environment outside the hotspring was great, there was also free footbaths too.

Scenically beautiful both in the day time and at night. I found exploring the various loops and up the stairs to the Shrine prior to checking out the outdoor Onsen the most enjoyable parts.

I visited in April the weather was perfect 😊 The place is just 10 mins walk from Yubatake and it really worth a visit! Please don't miss the chance!

It was a beautiful park even though most of the area was covered by snow (too bad I didn't take picture of the whole park 😞 ). I saw the small shrine up the hills and walk myself across the park to finally reach Sainokawara Rotenburou. There was some construction along the way so make sure to follow the temporarily they provided on the way so you don't get lost.

It's a very nice place to visit. I went there during the evening just before going to the Onsen. It's a beautiful harmony between the flowing water, the sound, the steam, the trees and the lights.

sainokawara park is a great park!! highly recommended. the steam from the onsen makes the park look more mysterious and a sight to see. may look underwhelming from the photos but park looks way better in person.

Beautiful scenery leading up to Sainokawara onsen at the end. The park itself was beautiful and a nice walk where you can also dip your feet or hands into some of the onsen. The main rotenburo or outdoor hot spring was quite simple. Perhaps in autumn or winter season it would be much better to go since we went in summer.

Meh, was ok - commercialization of historic practices in a show for ¥600. Guess you only live once and it was interesting. Go just before 9 am to buy ticket for the 9:30 show and you won’t stand in line as long as later in the day.

The show is unique. Impressive to see some cultural side of onsen and kusatsu. Best view spot is actually facing the screen. However the introduction was lame, the host talked too much and content was irrelevant. Also, the queue to buy tickets and going in were messy. Be there at least 30 mins in advance.

There was a dance at the beginning, then a long talking portion with some audience participation, and finally the two yumomi demonstrations with singing. It was interesting, but not something I would see more than once personally.

One of Japan's famous hot spring village, the water at Kusatsu onsen 草津温泉 was at 95°C where the residents in this area started this ritual to cool down to bearable hot spring temperature. ¥700 is maybe a little too expensive for this simple show.

Great experience. You buy ticket at the counter for that day and have to line up about 30 min before the performance starts. Make sure you have a face mask with you as they don’t allow to enter without it. The ticket for an adult person is 600 yen and totally worth the price. You’ll see a short video about Kusetsu history, that has english subtitles. Also you’ll see the dance and traditional cooling-water method that is very unique and interesting. Just found out that there is Mount Kusatsu, I always go to the hot springs. Today we arrived at Mount Kusatsu. You can bring your own gears and stuff and ski here, entry free. You can rent it from the shop at the venue, there are couple of places nearby that rent out the suits and gears. Bit crowded in the season. Nice place.

The snow in this area is not as powdery and heavy as in northern Japan such as Hokkaido and Aomori. The slopes consist 50% beginner’s courses. Some of the routes are too flat or upwards. For first timer skiers and snowboarders it will be a good place to have fun. There is an area for kids too. The rental shop has old equipments and colorful wears. Canteen has quite a number of choices for lunch. Overall I recommend this place for first timer and beginners. There is one short route for intermediate level but might be too boring for those who seek challenges.

We did not go there to ski, but we did go there to take the cable car up the mountain to watch skiers. If you are not skiing, there isn’t much else to do aside from taking in the nice view of kusatsu valley and food at the canteen (and zip line and swing), but I would say it was a nice trip.

Great place for winter activities, rentals are reasonably priced and if you have your own gear you just pay for the lift. Gondola ride was great, also the zip line. After skiing we checked in our airbnb with built-in onsen, great vacation. We go here January every year.

Interesting stop even when there’s no snow. A new zip line was installed and costs ard 20usd per ride, seems like a good deal. For the less adventurous, taking a round trip tour on the cable car to the top was also nice.

I don’t usually post reviews but this experience disturbed me to my core. Such beautiful animals looked depressed and dirty, confined to cages. There was one who kept gnawing at the wall in some sort of distress… right next a dirty small container stuffed full of Baby Chicks as some sort of petting zoo. I was there for about 35 mins and neither zookeeper nor visitors really seemed to care. I cannot believe this place exists, let alone in Japan where standards are so high - yet everyone there was having such a good time (the 4 star reviews speak for itself). How? How are locals okay with this? I don’t know what else to say. Apparently these animals are “rescued” but you have to wonder if this state of living is any measure better. Don’t visit here unless you want your trip to be ruined.

I was excited to see Capybara inside onsen, but turned out it’s depressing place… The staffs were friendly and it’s a good thing that most animals were rescued but the animal’s environment made me really concerned. The cages were so small! Monkeys were trying to get out..

What an amazing zoo!! You can see lots of rare animals/ reptiles here. And you can even interact with/ touch some of them! Tho the facilities are a bit old, I can see that the staff are paying great effort in taking care of the animals. They wrote detailed descriptions and drew cute pictures about the animals. I had a good time here indeed!

Was excited at first to see the facility and all it had to offer. There are a wide variety of animals kept at the facility that we haven't seen before. It's just a pity they were kept in very small enclosures that did not seem to be me maintained at all (rusted cages, degrading platforms, dirty cages) without much enrichment or hiding place. The animals appear to be on display to be looked at without much regard for their mental or physical health. Some animals, like the monkeys, were also kept separately and seemed very depressed or sickly. Animal lovers should stay away. Would not recommend.

Really really sad to see such wonderful animals treated in such a disgusting way, I hope this place is shut down as soon as possible and the people kn charge who have kept these animals in such conditions should be jailed or fined. There is no excuse for this in such a rich country in 2023. A shame on Japan and it's usual extremely high standards. I wish I hadn't gone and really wish I hadn't given my money to such a prison. In the photos u will see a tortoise being kept with the skeleton of another tortoise directly in front. A gecko/lizard glass cage left on the floor next to cleaning equipment, the tiny cages, birds kept with nothing inside there cages at all, horrible how can people treat animals this way?

If you are in the area you should visit. the variety and chance for direct animal interaction that you rarely experience now make it worth the visit.

I feel ashamed to have attended this place. It was tired, sad and cramped. Its cruel to keep these animals in such poor conditions, especially in 2024. A nice place to visit in the snow

Visited on Jan 8, 2019: nice little temple, went here during the day time, its direct in the heart of kusatsu town.

This temple is located right next to the large parking garage and the station/visitor center. Quite small, but had pretty seasonal plants and a small office that does goshuin. When we visited, the pagoda was under construction. There is a large staircase leading down to the yubatake.

Nice little temple complex just north of Yubatake, up some steps. Includes a five storey pagoda and a small pond.

It said "Five stories tower" is the nearest to the Heaven!

Kosenji Temple is located up a few flights of steep steps from Yubataka Park and the surrounding area at the bottom of the steps. The temple was beautiful covered in snow and worth exploring if you are in the area. If you take the steps up, maybe try making your way down the slope and winding streets to take in some of the hidden gems of stores in the area! Enjoy!

Kusatsu Onsen is a real crowd pleaser and fantastic temples and shrines like this one make the visit even more wonderful. But they take lunch at 1pm so I couldn’t get my stamp. Maybe next time.

A small museum featuring an ex-comedian Tsurutaro who spent over 30 years drawing in this region. The entrance fee could be a bit pricey for its size but this place allowed me to see a different side of the celebrity. His style is based on simplicity and is easy to understand. It would be great if it had English translation as he often incorporates poetry into his art.

I went in march so it was snowy. It's a beautiful place to enjoy a hot spring. The area is pretty small so in just a day I walked the entire place. There are a lot of different shops to spend the day eating but many are packed so remember to go early to avoid long queues. I recommend visiting in winter time, the snow and the cold helps to enjoy more the very scalding temperatures of the hot springs. Oh ! every Friday evening there is a public onsen open for mix genders and families that you can wear your own swimsuit and cost around ¥800.

(Original) ホテルヴィレッジに宿泊せず、中学生女子と小学校男子を連れて行ってきました。 参加するときは手袋と履きやすい靴があるといいです。 無くても買えますがちょっとお高めです。 フォレストステージの場所ですが、テルメテルメというホテルヴィレッジの入浴施設の近くにあるので、Google Mapで設定していくとわかりやすいです。 その前に駐車場があり、通りを挟んでコンビニのローソンがあります。 駐車場からフォレストガーデンの看板がすぐに見つかり、森の中を通り付けていきます。テルメテルメの右側を進むと右手側にフォレストガーデンのフェアリーコースと集合場所の小屋があり、まっすぐ進むとホテルが見えてきて、入り口にピカチュウの像(？)があります。 中に入るとホテルの遊ぶ系の受付やゲームコーナーがあり、朝イチ以外はボーリング場の受付で申し込みをします。 受付の仕方ですが、当日のみ申し込みのみになるので、前もって予約はできないようです。 当日の8:30からボウリング場の受付がある建物の庭側(入り口)側に特設の受付ができるので、そこで必要事項に記入をして、申し込みをします。 開始時間は申し込みをしてすぐではなく、その日によって設定されていて申し込みの時に選びます。 私たちが参加した１０月の土曜日はフェアリーコース(身長140cm以下)は１時間毎(9:00～、10:00～、11:00～等)、マスターコース(140cm以上)は２時間毎(9:00～、11:00～、13:00～等)にから選びました。 代金はこの時に支払いをし、宿泊客と外部からで値段が違います。 支払いにはGOTOの紙クーポンも電子クーポンも使えます。 集合は１５分前でハーネスをつけたり準備をするみたいで、時間ぴったりになると説明が始まります。 ここからはわが家の感想です。 中学生女子はマスターコース(3800円)、小学生男子はフェアリーコース(1800円)にしました。 ２人とも千葉県にある同じようなハーネスをつけてのアスレチックは経験済みです。 フェアリーコースのスタート地点が幼稚園や小学校にある遊具くらい、例えるとだいたい2階のベランダくらいの高さでしたが、小学生男子はギャーギャー言いながら無事にフェアリーコースをクリアしました。 保護者は同伴が基本ですが私は下から見守りで大丈夫でした。スタッフさんが集団につき１人付いてくれてアドバイスしてくれたので、励まされながら頑張りました。 フェアリーコースの最後の方に足場がない、自分が吊り下げられているハーネスを掴んで、シャーっと隣の木に移動する箇所があり、そこをかなり怖がっていました。足場がないとやっぱり辛いみたいです。 でもなんとかそこを越えて、一番長いゴールまでのロングターザンは楽しかったみたいです。ここは受け止めてくれるスタッフさんがいて、優しかったです。 問題はマスターコースです。 まずはじめに３０分くらい説明があります。 その後に流れをスムーズにするために経験者や大人など早そうな人から順にスタートします。が、うちの中学生女子が経験者なのでスタッフさんに指名されて１番になってしまった所から不運が始まりました。 普通ならフェアリーコース(A～Eコース)のエリアで違うマスターコース参加者用のルートを使って経験を積んでから、道路を挟んだ高さが３階くらいあるレベルのコース(Fコース～)に行くみたいなのですが、この日は混み合っていて、フェアリーコースを飛ばしていきなり体感的に３階のベランダくらいの高さがあるFコースからスタートになりました。 １つ目は縄が10cm感覚で縄跳びのように並んでるコースだったのでなんとか大丈夫だったのですが、２つ目がいきなり足場がなく自分を吊ってるハーネスを両手で掴んで、シャーっとターザンのように隣の木に移動するコースで、足場がないのと高さに中学生女子は怖じ気づいてしまい、立ち往生してしまいました。 でもすぐにリタイヤをしないで、後ろの人に先に進んでもらって、他の人を観察してからリタイヤするかチャレンジするか判断することにしました。が、やっぱり一度怖くなってしまったらもう本人的にダメだったみたいで最初の場所まで戻ってはしごを降りてリタイヤしました。 大人はだいたい大丈夫でしたが、他の中学生くらいの女子も怖くてなかなかチャレンジできず、どうしようどうしよう言いながらなんとかチャレンジし、もう１人の男子はリタイヤしてました。 なので、中学生くらいまでのお子さんは高さに弱かったり、度胸がない場合はよく相談することをお勧めします。 大学生や大人ならたぶん問題なく楽しめると思います。 たまたまわが家が、混んでる日でスタート位置がいきなりかなりの高さだったことと、難易度の高いターザンみたいなコースだったこと、グループの１番目だったのでコツがわからなくて一度怖いと思ったらできなくなったと言う不運が重なっただけかもしれないですけどね。 ただ、このあとフェアリーコースに戻って、フェアリーコースの中のマスターコースをやらせてもらい、Fコースに進むか終わらせるかの分岐点で本人に選ばせて、下の子と同じフェアリーコース最後の簡単なターザンをやって終わらせて、一応成功体験をしてから終わりにしたので、楽しい気持ちで２時間終わったのが良かったです。 スタッフさんの話によるとフェアリーコースでも泣いて降りられなくて、スタッフさんが助けに行く事が多々あるみたいです。 それくらい、どちらのコースも高さがあって怖いので参加するときはお気をつけくださいね。
